I'm playing this LP by an act called Love Clinic which I bought on a whim (and because I like its label, Ariwa Sound) for a couple of quid earlier in the week. It's fantastic! Sort of like Lovers Rock but bang up to the minute, and some very odd cover versions.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been experimenting in functional listening for writing and today so far it's been Alice Coltrane/Journey in Satchidananda Eno/Ambient 4. But I've also been listening to some Marvin and Tammi and Smog/Dongs.

Ellie (Ellie), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm about to listen to ned's neo-shoegaze cd, then subliminal sessions 2 i guess.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 11 October 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm on track 7 of Ned's mix, and it's intermingling nicely with some church bells from outside.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Toby do you like the Subliminal Sessions mix?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

What, did Ned give everybody a mixtape too? Meep.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Does Sub. Sess 2 have the Erick Morillo mix of Thrill Me on it? The one with the woman singing "dimension walker, dirty dirty trash talker" etc? I quite liked that.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing right now as at work and on constant lost fresher alert. Most recently: the Polyphonic Spree, the new Jurassic 5 and Mozart.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

this week i har mostly been listening to: Ska after buying the two trojan boxes at the weekend but at the moment it's mp3.com's techstep chart:
http://genres.mp3.com/music/electronic/drum_n_bass/tech_step/
(if you save the m3u file and edit out all the items with down1oad in them, that's download with a 1 (one) instead of an l (ell), you don't have to listen to the annoying adverts. in vim just do :g/down1oad/d)

usually it's the previous night's john peel show but i tend to leave that for the commute these days.

koogs, Friday, 11 October 2002 13:17 (twenty-three years ago)

last night I was listening to Journey, and now I keep singing into "city of the angels".

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't bring my walkman in today. So all I've heard today is some random Mantovani we used for a romantic movie soundtrack.

(We were reshooting the start of Holoship from Red Dwarf V with the Original Director, woo! And this afternoon we had the secondary anchor from North West Tonight come in to help us with our interview skills. Double Woo!).

Graham (graham), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:33 (twenty-three years ago)

(we Graham?...do you see, working in group projects = way to make some friends)(this is meant sincerely)

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham (graham), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Today: Urusei Yatsura (we are../slain by...), Redd Stripes, Avril Lavigne, Madnomad, Crackout, Radiohead(Kid A). And probably Eels (electro-shock blues) soon.
I love being allowed to listen to CDs at my desk

Sofa King Alternative (Sofa King Alternative), Friday, 11 October 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Listening to Thievery Corps new one. I just read on Pitchfork that I live in Washington and wear a suit! And that James Traficant is idiosyncratic and not (as I originally thought) a mob flunkie!!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:45 (twenty-three years ago)

tim: i love subliminal sessions 2 to bits. it's pretty much all i've been listening to for the last few days; in fact i keep meaning to start a thread about it. i remember you going on about it on skykicking which is why i picked it up last week when i saw it going cheap.

i really like track 12 on ned's cd.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm at work and have just played The Streets, Kings of Convienience, laughed at a Flaw mp3 I found on the server and I've just segued into the crowd pleasing Bees - Sunshine Hit Me.

Just realised I've forgotten an appoinment with an osteopath, chucking £20 down the drain. I'm waiting for A Minha Menina to cheer me up.

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 11 October 2002 14:53 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm listening to the Cure mix CD I made for Daver MoFo Popshots to make sure it's cohesive. So far, so good.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Bonjour La France volume2
Has anyone else heard the Poppys?
There song Love Lioubou Amour is great.
(it's got Rocky Horror backing vocals, and French Menudo-like lead vocals.)

A Nairn (moretap), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

the "next" turned out to be midwest product's ver ver obvious new order pastiche (minus the vox), but which is still mightily enjoyable nonetheless (because of it?).

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:07 (twenty-three years ago)

(in fact, it only really takes off when it's doing it's "confusion"/"everythings gone green"/"586" riffs; otherwise it lapses into beautiful if banal moments of post-rock guitar ala durutti or whoever, and zzzzz. which may just be my own personal mindset these days - gimme beats beats beats - but might not too.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

heh M2's "Top Five Songs To..." tonight was "Top Five Songs To Come Out Of The Closet To" & was handled as badly as you'd expect! I'll make a mixtape for anyone that can guess the six videos they picked (hint : it's worse than you think!)

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:15 (twenty-three years ago)

5. donna summer, "i'm coming out"
4. tom robinson band, "glad to be gay"
3. kid rock, "cowboy"

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 15:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Lambchop's Is A Woman, heartachingly beautiful. Just right for a dismal, wet, grey day.

Saskia, Friday, 11 October 2002 15:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, I am gonna list every song I hear over this weekend. Starting from 5.30 pm...

Saw the following videos:
Christina Aguilera - Dirty (wow!)
Kelly Llorenna - Heart of Gold (bog standard trance ballad)
Madonna - Die Another Day (farty noise keyboard, I'm underwhelmed)
Craid David - Whats your flava (the man is a parody of himself)
Will Young - Evergreen (changed the channel and decided to feed the cat and dog)

On CD
Avril Lavigne - Losing Grip, Complicated, Sk8er Boi, I'm with You

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 11 October 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Right now I'm listening to Uncle Dave Macon's Go Long Mule on headphones at work.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 October 2002 17:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Everyday is now "What I Downloaded Overnight Day", and it's a very Merry "What I Downloaded Overnight Day" as I'm currently enjoying:
Horsepower Productions - In Fine Style
I'm blown away, but not in the way I was 'spectin. It's really spacious music which I don't usually associate with garage. Mellowed-out but in an unjazzy way. It makes me wonder what the next MJ Cole record might sound like as the jazz/soul flip to this idea.

and possibly the best mix evah!!!:
New Order - Back to Mine
you all really must hear the rare version of "I Feel Love" and the last track too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 October 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Archers of Loaf - vs. the greatest of all time (whole CD).

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 11 October 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

in my car:
trainspotting soundtrack
beatles-revolver
mr.t experience- and the women who love them

amy (amy), Friday, 11 October 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Billy, the Groundhogs track sounds fantastic, and everything goes together really well. There's just no lull on the thing (including the Cat Stevens song). Also, although the tracklisting might indicate a pretentious eclecticsm, it's actually a very fun mix (except "Energy Flash" which, while essential, is a bit heavy in this context), and I had forgot about the inclusion of "In Every Dream Home a Heartache!"

There's some decent mixing, but's it's mainly the selection and sequencing, and it's a very nice break from all of that 2manyDJs stuff.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 October 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

(later same morning - ) side 1 of "blues for allah", some songs off a TX Flashbacks volume, "this ain't the summer of love" by BOC, couple of royal trux songs off the self titled or untitled or whatever album.

unknown or illegal user (doorag), Friday, 11 October 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 October 2002 21:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I listened to the greatest boxset ever, Star Time (James Brown) and Balance Of The Force by Boymerang.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 October 2002 22:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Did somebody say the Groundhogs? - I'll admit I'm a young, old hippie and I love the Groundhogs. I spent tons collecting the original vinyls years ago. I bought 'the best of' in the HMV sale last week. I've seen Tony McPhee live dozens of times, one seriously underestimated player. Sadly I saw him a couple of years ago and he'd gone all nu-metal and just sucked.
Also bought a Wishbone Ash cd, just waiting for the right time to play it and transport my self back to my stoner youth.

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 11 October 2002 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Did somebody say the Groundhogs?
yep, "Cherry Red" is smack dab in the middle (and pretty much in full) of the New Order - Back to Mine mix CD.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 11 October 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

But there's so much more to the Groundhogs than Cherry Red. McPhee elevated true blues guitar to levels only Jimi Hendrix would have acheived. I seem to remember some story about them being due to play together in the month after Hendrix's death.
It's late and I sound like my Dad. G'night!

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 11 October 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Presently, "Marfaus vs. Johnny Human," a CD-R of a collaboration between some Italian guys about whom I know little and Alig from Family Fodder. Neato.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 12 October 2002 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I listened to Sweetheart of the Rodeo while jogging this morning.

Then I had to listen to our album three times in order to describe it for an interview. Ugh! I'm so sick of the fucker already...

And now I'm listening to Cockthrush. (Hey... don't blame me. That unpleasant sobriquiet was used frequently by my ex...)

kate, Saturday, 12 October 2002 18:55 (twenty-three years ago)

''no ha 8 months ago i got swayed into buying "ursonate" by the THESE avant-trolls and i haven't listened to it once! but now i don't wanna break the run, so i have designated it my "mystery" record''

well Bob i'll prob get that if its still on the racks though I think i'm not going there for another two weeks (the THESE folks do know their stuff so whenever they talk abt soemthing its hard not to buy it: they are not a fan of everything there and they do give honest opinions so when thye like something its good).

today i listened to a CD of Carlos Montaya: a flamenco guitarist. a fantastic disc of his solos.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 13 October 2002 10:08 (twenty-three years ago)

The ONLY Le Tigre Lp! God the second one is EVILLY BAD etc. I'm on Sparks Woofer in Tweeter's Clothing now, Call the Doctor next I think.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 13 October 2002 11:09 (twenty-three years ago)

erik, Sunday, 13 October 2002 11:25 (twenty-three years ago)

julie doiron and the wooden stars (it fits with the beautiful cold and wet weather we are having today)

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 October 2002 11:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Saint Etienne "Smash The System", what I've only just bought, which makes me only 2 albums behind now, yes? Gosh "Bad Photographer" is as good as I remember it.

To drown out the David Gray my flat "mates" keep playing at excrutiating volume.

Graham (graham), Sunday, 13 October 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

servotron - no room for humans

that concludes my last 48 hours worth of listening.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm on those 15 Trojan box sets I bought a couple of weeks back - Rocksteady today so far.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

thee greatest assortment of all the 70s-80s NZ music that was actually (insanely) opular here & that anyone outside the country (including indiekiz venerating Flying Nun) has non idea exists - The Mockers, Peking Man, Satellite Spies, Netherworld Dancing Toys, The Fan Club, Holiday Makers, DD Smash, Shona Laing, Herbs, The Swingers, Blam Blam Blam, Dragon, Th' Dudes, Hi Revving Tongues, Blerta, Patea Maori Club, etc. Also some Darcy Clay, Bic Runga, Chris Knox, Split Enz & Shihad.

(heh, since my "guess the videos M2 used for "Top 5 songs to come out of the closet to"" contest wasn't too popular (thanx jess) it was : 5 Pet Shop Boys - "West End Girls" 4 George Michael - "I Want Your Sex" late entry Placebo - "Nancy Boy" 3 Frankie Goes To Hollywood - "Relax" 2 Village People - "YMCA" 1 Culture Club - "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?". I'm still wavering between anger & confusion . . .)

Ess Kay (esskay), Sunday, 13 October 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, rockism and really bad descriptions time. Servotron - Serve Obey as an mp3 downloaded Lookout Records' site, because jel reminded me that I was considering ordering a Servotron cd but I don't know much about them. Where do I start? I seek yr expert advice, jel.

And "Bobby V" by the Oxford Collapse, which I downloaded just because of the band's name (oh, how often I wish it would, hah...): '91-ish Pavement in a biscuit tin trying to recreate Sheena Is A Punk Rocker but forgetting everything except the "now-ee-ow-ah-ow" bit. ACE. Obviously. (They deserve better than my feeble witterings, too, so don't be put off by any of the preceding inanity.)

Next I might listen to some old mods by esem aka stereoman, or I might listen to Sloan's "500 Up" again and feel bad about how much the lyrics remind me of my own life, or I might listen to the new kid606 again and try to work out whether I think it's his best stuff ever or a bit rubbish while blissfully ignoring the possibility that both could be true at once. (Oo meow, etc.)

Rebecca (reb), Sunday, 13 October 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm onto the Rastafari Trojan box set now. Only ten to go after this!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 October 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Dreem Teem on Radio 1

Paul (scifisoul), Sunday, 13 October 2002 20:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Rebecca, the best Servotron CD to order is No Room For Humans, as it features most of their classic audio mind control units: people mover, I am not a (voice activated child identicon), bad birthday, gammatron and pull the plug. They had more of an edge on this album, and my dad did once describe it as horrible pop music.

And if you can find it, the "there is no santa claus" single is also pretty cool.

I must try and find the peel session I taped by them! Not writing what is on a tape, classic or dud?

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 October 2002 20:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud! It would drive me mad! I have a couple of thousand tapes, so it would be unbearable. Taking the extra step and putting it all in a database may seem to be going too far to some, obv...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 13 October 2002 20:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Heh, I have hundreds of unlabelled 90-minute tapes somewhere. They did indeed drive me mad. They were in the computer desk drawer but I put them in a big box and hid them because I realised I'd never be able to find anything specific on them. Every time I pulled one out to see what was on it it would be part of the 1996 Festive Fifty and I'd have to listen and swim around in nostalgia instead of actually sorting them out.

Rebecca (reb), Sunday, 13 October 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

i spent most of today listen to discs 2 & 3 of my "best 90s singles mix cd's". i think i'm wearing them out.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 13 October 2002 22:16 (twenty-three years ago)

(I started writing that post partly so I could thank jel and then I very rudely forgot to do so. Thank you, jel. And now back to listening to random notes played in the BigTick Angelina VSTi... instant SAWI, just add gentle 808 kicks)

Rebecca (reb), Sunday, 13 October 2002 22:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Interpol (who were to play here last night but didnt turn up), Ol' Dirty Bastard, Shabba Ranks and some UK garage comps. I think I'll listen to Sleater-Kinney now.

Nitzer Ebb - _Big Hit_. This album rocks, why did everyone hate it when it came out? (I'm about to succumb to the rave classics thread, though.)

I'm onto the Tribute To Bob Marley Box Set now. I kind of hesitated over this set, because I got so exasperated at Marley's ridiculously dominant position when I was in Jamaica, but it has a terrific line-up of acts.

I'm with you on Dirty Epic, Dan.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Dad that's my first equal favourite Underworld release! sadly for you it shares first place with the "Bruce Lee" single . . .

currently : I had Magazine's "Permafrost" & the Skeptics "All Sum Nul" looping for just over an hour; currently random Flying Saucer Attack, Holly Valance, My Bloody Valentine & Scooter.

Ess Kay (esskay), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned's shoegaze compilation. It's lurvely.

- Scent of A Woman (OST - by the same guy, Michael Newman, who did the Six Feet Under theme)
- American Beauty (OST -ditto-)
- Iggy & The Stooges 'Raw Power' (exactly what it says on the tin)
- Justin Timberlake 'Like I Love You' (I couldn't believe it when I heard it. Neptunes can truly do no wrong. good stuff)
- Nas 'One Mic' (awesome .. if you like that kind of thing)
- Supergrass 'Life On Other Planets' (not their greatest but a grower. seeing them later this month)
- DJ Shadow 'Private Press' (peerless. but getting sick of hearing it used on upcoming tv show trailers. seeing him on Friday)

- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club 'BRMC' (not as overhypde as The Strokes but still rockin')
- Erykah Badu 'Bag Lady' (remix. LP track was shite)
- Badly Drawn Boy 'You Were Right' (get it while it's hot, people. very limited pre-LP release on 7" & CDS. seeing him in December)

Android (Android Elvis), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Today, it has been random Velvet Underground and A-ha's Hunting High and Low and Minor Earth, Major Sky albums.

liz! (liz!), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Hunting High and Low. Classic.
If memory serves A-Ha are playing Wembly Arena soon ... scary.

Android (Android Elvis), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they already have. I wish they would come to the US.

liz! (liz!), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Willie Rosario (Live in PR), El Gran Combo (last studio CD), Oscar D'Leon (La Formula Original), Fairuz (ultimate Fairuz mix and I know none of the titles), Farid el Atrache (Kelmet Itab), Said Mekawy (bootleg live recording), Joe Arroyo (hits), George Wassouf (mostly live recordings of unknown provenance), more or less in that order. I wish Joe Arroyo would record more salsa. I don't know if George Wassouf has a terrible voice or not, but I still like him sometimes and these rhythms are incredible. The Sayeed Mekawwi bootleg is very nice, with some unearthly kanun solos and an audience that claps along appropriately.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm...Rockist, drop me a line. I want to do some sort of music swap.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Bootleg -- that reminds me. Has anyone ever recorded a gig using a Mini-disc and a digital mic?
I'm seeing a few gigs over the month or so and I'd like to try it out. Not bootlegging to sell, just for private consumption.

Problem is those mics are expenseeeve. Damn.

Android (Android Elvis), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, okay. It might be difficult since my facilities even for taping CDs suck, but tape to tape copying seems to work okay.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot of CHARTIST CRAP because I am in the office and forced to listen to our clients' music. Ugh.

What I was listening to on the way to work: Arthur, Or The Rise And Fall Of The British Empire by the Kinks. I've been on a Kinks kick the past two days and can't stop. Except my copy of Village Green Preservation society is mysteriously MISSING. Argh!

kate, Wednesday, 16 October 2002 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Started off the day w/ some v. nice Bud Powell/Sonny Stitt sides from the late 40s, part of an excellent + supercheap Powell box set that I've slowly been working my way through. Now listening to that Sonic Youth/Ex/Insane Clown Posse 'Fishtank' thing.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm listening to J Mascis and the Fog - Free so Free (and I just wish that every song didn't mention "free")

Today I bought (as I can't find the last CD's you bought thread on ILM, and am too lazy to do a search this afternoon):

Beach Boys - Keepin' the summer alive/beach boys
Gary Numan - Premium hits
Ramones - Road to Ruin
Venom - In league with satan

damn the HMV sale and afternoon's off! And now I hear that Tower has a sale on....

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm listening to the Cure comp I made for Daver Popshots again. I'd better get this in the mail before I just keep it for myself...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm listening to the sound of my heart going triple-speed because I've had far too much caffeine and I've just broken the mail server and I'm hoping I can fix it before anyone notices. Aiiieeee...

Rebecca (reb), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

*good wishes for Rebecca* Again, the sound of silence, but I have the new Sparks and some psych comps that will rectify this situation shortly.

Its an 'I wish I was still in Boston' day at work.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Darren Emerson Essential Mix, it's pretty hard.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Rebecca needs to bounce into someone who can help's office, hocked up on caffiene, totally out of breath, so all she can do is wave her arms in the general direction of the server room and desperately try to mime and gesture "mail server" and "fucked".

(Or if you fix it yourself, do that anyway)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

This morning Saint Etienne's 'Smash The System' (well mainly Hobart Paving on repeat - anyone else feel all emotional when she sings 'Baby, don't forget to catch me'? Sniff.)

This afternoon - Various old Electro incl. Chaka Khan, Sugarhill, Mantronix.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Wilco & the sound of the rain.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 16 October 2002 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew Sweet

Kim (Kim), Thursday, 17 October 2002 00:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Jo - "R-Type" (grrr soulseek still won't let me find "Apollo 9" tho), some DJ Scud, Medicine's "One More" (nabisco was right!), some Beenie Man & the spooky bits of the Akira OST (ie all of it, but a very special shoutout to "Doll's Polyphony" & all the drug-induced nightmares it's given me over the years - respect!)

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 17 October 2002 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Mia - Alles Neu. What the hell is this, why has nobody told me to download it before, and why are all the websites I can find about it in German even after I tell Google not to give me anything German or anything in .de? Someone on here is bound to know the complete life history. (It will probably all be very eighteen months/years ago and I will look foolish, but I am well used to that. And no, I can't actually tell if it's from the last year or so or if it's nearly as old as I am.)

Also some Computer Cougar, after Jess' article. Wish I could find more of the stuff mentioned.

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 17 October 2002 00:34 (twenty-two years ago)

(PS I reserve the right to be bored and embarrassed by everything I enthuse about on here a week afterwards. I love this thread, though, I get loads of download recommendations, I get to froth rabidly without actually being expected to say anything, and nobody's beaten me up for being too rockist or not rockist enough yet. ILM scares me.)

Rebecca (reb), Thursday, 17 October 2002 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

So far today it's been The Best Of Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds. What a great first line for a love song, on Into My Arms: "I don't believe in an interventionist god".

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 October 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 October 2002 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Still listening to Mario's Cafe repeatedly. I haven't taken in any of the words of the verses, but was disappointed to notice the chorus goes "Tuesday morning 10 AM" and not "Tuesday morining telly".

(Hobart Paving is greatest for containg the phrase "hairdos like mine")

Graham (graham), Thursday, 17 October 2002 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Listening to New Order ('I have a cold' comfort music)

New Ladytron album 'Light and Magic' which is bloody brilliant and you should alll buy it and everything.

And Nina Simmone's 'Balitmore' which was very kindly recorded for me and I like just as much as I was told I was.

The Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers - Pacific Coast Rambler

Is the Ladytron offically 'out', Anna? I haven't seen reviews and stuff.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 17 October 2002 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Only on import at the moment; comes out officially here on Oct 28th.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 17 October 2002 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

is it better than 604? (I didn't think much of that)

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 17 October 2002 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna is that "you don't have to spend you just have to pretend" song on the Ladytron album? I quite like that.

I'm listening to High Life by Daft Punk at the moment, off the My House in Montmartre weird french house compilation I found in a crap shop. It's the best CD ever obviously because it has DJ Falcon's remix of La Mouche by Cassius on it.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

is it better than 604?

Sort of a toss-up, I think -- it's good, but needs some editing since it's pretty one-note by the end. I actually compare it unfavorably to the most recent Human League!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Just now: the Underworld Album. The guitar line for Trim being nicked from a previous song = DUD.

Now: Aimee Mann - Lost in Space. It's very good but inessential.

Later: new Gomez album, St. Thomas, Lali Puna. I don't know what any of these will be like (though I can certainly fucking guess in Gomez's case).

I also wouldn't be surprised if I sneak in another listen of The Body Says No by New Pornographers, or, oh I don't know, the entirety of Xinlisupreme's Tomorrow Never Comes.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

gordon mumma: live elctronic music.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 17 October 2002 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(I am less enthralled by the Mia now, I have found out more about it/her/them and listened to another track from the album and it was rubbish. It was also in English with some sub-Peaches lyrics, which just isn't as cool as German words I didn't understand at all but involved bombs and explosions.)

So far today the Orb, Cypress Hill, an old tape from 1995 with all sorts on it, Andrew WK and now the Bhundu Boys.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 17 October 2002 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Jel - It''s more human sounding than '604'. I really like both though.

Dr C, they are on the cover of Sleaze Nation at the mo, and will have a half-page review in Uncut and a three page feature in future edition of Mixmag. These are the bits I know about.

Ronan - you mean the song off Futurism? No, but it is on the Playgirl EP.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 17 October 2002 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Destroyer record, This Night. I want to like it more than I do. I keep thinking it's like a rambling, not-so-hooky Grant Lee Phillips, and I wish I'd stop hearing that and just accept it on its own terms.

Arthur (Arthur), Thursday, 17 October 2002 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(Hobart Paving is greatest for containg the phrase "hairdos like mine")

and "Rain falls like Elvis tears. Oh no, no sugar!"

Which I find strangely and wonderfully affecting.

I'm lisnin' to The Chills' 'Oh, Inverted World' which I bought in the spring, played about three times and thre it aside, considering it to be wishy-washy, west coast whimsy.
But I've put it on now and it's cold outside, it's raining, I've got a blocked head, I'm tired and suddenly it sounds like paradise.

That and that 'Nu Flow' single, which is most ace.

DavidM (DavidM), Thursday, 17 October 2002 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

subliminal sessions 2 (still can't get enough of this). acid mothers temple. mountain goats + throwing muses mp3.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 17 October 2002 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Pretty much any of the Subliminal Comps are great, I got the third one when it came out, mixed by Erick Morillo, and despite the odd iffy track over the 3 cds it's really excellent. Having said that 2 is probably better and when I saw Harry Romero at Homelands......well he was just unbelievable.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 17 October 2002 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

At present a collection of goony psych obscurities. Gotta love these weird-ass guitar solos that make no sense.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 October 2002 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Chills' 'Oh, Inverted World'

I meant, of course, The Shins. Why I put The Chills is beyond me - I don't own any Chills albums.
But I've just got 'Futurism 2' and the new Lemon Jelly. Is good yes.

DavidM (DavidM), Friday, 18 October 2002 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Inbreds - Winning Hearts. It's funny, on the first listen I couldn't help but pick out the one track that sounded like a songwriting 'concession' (one would assume for the sake of friendship and harmony) and lo and behold... the liner notes confirmed its lonely status as co-credited. I wonder how many albums have songs that stick out this way? I can think of at least one... But it'd be great if it ever worked out that the concession song was better than the rest of the album - in this case, sadly....

jel: Is that the album with "In Too Deep"? How's the album as a whole?

Right now I'm listening to the Brandenburg Concertos. Before this I was listening to Origin and System Of a Down, more Indian and Western classical before that. Toxicity, at least up to the title track, is pretty great, I've come to realize. At the moment I'd rate it higher than any non-Moving Pictures mainstream hard rock/metal album from the 80s that I've heard so take that, nu-metal haters.

That's a great Cage piece.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 8 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(IIRC, the pieces on the radio that I woke up to were Brahms' Hungarian Dance no 5 (?) (perf Toronto Guitar Quartet), Paderewski's Piano Concerto in A minor, a couple dudes (Eddie Laing?) doing a tribute to Benny Goodman, and something by the Chieftains. I listened to The Ten Graces Played On the Vina. I put on the radio for a while after Origin & SOaD. First they played "Good Times Bad Times" and "New Year's Day" - which is actually a really amazing song that puts all those silly black-hairspray-and-makeup bands to shame. Then the station next door was playing some more Zeppelin. I put it on a modern rock station but they played crap - Simple Plan, a Moby triple-shot. Now I'm listening to the Brandenburg Concertos. Ooooh, how did I forget, I listened to Morton Feldman's Neither, which was beautiful.)

Do you mean Neither, which is based on a Beckett text, or is this another piece based on Beckett?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 8 February 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

''I listened to The Ten Graces Played On the Vina''

is it a various comp? I was looking for a Gopal Krishnan CD the other day

''Do you mean Neither, which is based on a Beckett text, or is this another piece based on Beckett?''

its called words and music. its another piece.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 8 February 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ten Graces contains three compositions by Thyagaraja performed by M. Nageswara Rao (vina) w/ V. Thyagarajan (vln), T. Ranganathan (mrdangam), V. Nagarajan (kanjira), and P Srinivasan (tambura). It's on Nonesuch, from the late 1960s I believe. I took it out of the York library because I'm going to give a seminar on Thyagaraja (the composer not the violinist) next wk. It's pretty great. Don't think I know Gopal Krishnan.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 8 February 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

last album I listened to was Sonic Youth's Murray Street. I only got halfway through before I had to go to work. Granted, I still have to flat-out IGNORE the vocals, but musically they are as fine as ever. I regret not checking it out earlier (I didn't want to buy it though - seven songs! of sonic youth!, and just now got the chance to borrow it).

I can't sleep tonight, so I'm listening to Slowdive's Souvlaki now, which is good for exhausted-but-too-wired-to-sleep brains. I went out earlier with my dog & drove around north Seattle, then down I-5, listening the Strokes & enjoying how empty the roads were. My car needed a little highway driving anyway, it's been cooped up downtown for a month. Driving with my dog is so funny- if you sing along to the music, he turns & looks at you as if you're talking to him. When I looked over at him at stoplights, I kept laughing- he'd be sitting there with his head cocked to the side, as if he were holding up half of a conversation. At least it's a good thing he doesn't mind off-key singing.

and

''Its a pretty short piece compared to his other late 80s works. I thought it was wonderful BUT i haven't heard this in a while. I'll post some more on this on the feldman thread if i can tomorrow.''

well I'll post it here since the thread is very much alive.

basically, the orchestration is similar to pierrot lunaire (I checked the booklet and that is indeed the case) but Feldman uses the similar instruments quite differently (though it still reminded me of it). But unlike schoenberg's piece the words are never recited with music (apart from one approx 20 second stretch, 10 mins from the end: it is the loudest that it ever gets) it's always music or words, actually but the music does mimic the tone of the voice, the way it is recited, more or less (what is it abt? I think its to do with love and soul and er...)

Hope that made some sense sundar.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 9 February 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar: Sum 41's "all killer no filler" is okay, but a misleading title, as apart from the singles it's just kinda there. "Does this look infected?" is much better, especially the heavy metal songs at the end.

Right now, I am listening to, Hydroplane "hope against hope".

Earlier, I was carolanning on:

The Grooviest Girl In The World - The Fun And Games Commission

and now it is

They Came From The Stars (I Saw Them) - Xmas E.P.

I hate Christmas, but why do I love Christmas music so much? It's just that screaming WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! joy that really good Christmas carols capture. There's two types of Xmas carols, the scary, dark, medievil "it's winter and we're all starving" "Silent Night" icey scary beauty type carols, and then there's the WHOOOOOOO!!! raving pure simple beautiful aching exploding balls of joy Xmas music which is the feeling that you get as a little kid waking up on Xmas morning with this screaming JOY of expectation and excitement and fever pitch wonder.

This EP manages to capture both and that makes me skipping happy. I want to put up tinsel and tree lights, but I expect Suzy and Ed would be really disturbed if they came home and found the house all decked out for Xmas in February.

What is it about recent New Order singles (and by that, I mean, within the past ten years) that they don't sound so great when they come out, but when you go back and listen to them in context along with the rest of their body of work, they sound like instant classics. Both Regret and Crystal, in context, are fucking breathtaking.

I tried to listen to In A Silent Way this morning in the bath, but I'd got about a minute into it (and my feet just into the bath) when the fucking phone rang and my parents announced the football match they'd gone to see had been called off and they were coming back, and so rather than having a bath in an empty house with all the doors open and Miles ringing out loudly and languidly, I had to close the door and listen to FiveLive instead. Some garage rap stuffage. And it's good, it is.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the orb - adventures beyond the ultraworld
neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea
laika - good looking blues

Here you go Jody.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

At work today I heard - an Ed Thigpen alb w/ Joe Lovano, 'Equillibrium' by Matthew Shipp, 'Angel Song' by Kenny Wheeler/Lee Konitz/Bill Frisell/Dave Holland, 'Spectrum' by Billy Cobham, Supersilent 6, and 'Impressed', Gilles Peterson's excellent Brit jazz comp.

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Which Rose Chronicles, jel?

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

We're in Love with the World of Janie Jones: The Singles Collection. Most of it's pretty crappy, but the songs that work ("Witch in White", "Gunning for You", "Witches Brew", "Back on My Feet Again") are incredible. There's also a really sweet, heartfelt thank you song to Joe Strummer that's absolutely dreadful.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Zwan, which I still am not digging and turn-to-dark UK garage like early So Solid, Bound 4 Da Reload, Zed Bias soundathepirates etc.

Right now Romanthony -- "Never Fuck"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan - The "shiver" album, "awiting eternity" is my favourite.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Idlewild

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

jel: Dwelling is a good song, too, though the words are kinda dumb. Richard Maranda is really good. Lots of people didn't really like the combination that RC had going.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

POP! SIX! SQUISH! UH-UH! CICERO! LIPSCHITZ!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

bryan, they are like this oddity band to me, just very different from the Sub-pop/alt-rock stuff I was buying at the time. The woman has a great voice, mesmerising at times I think.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Thomas Brinkman - row
snd - tender love

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was that in spite of the great vocals, the power (intermittent) of the rhythm section turned a lot of people off. I would've loved to see them live. I saw Sarah McLachlan just before 'Solace' hit big (she played a medium-sized club here in Winnipeg) and it was almost metal. I always thought that was what RC was going for.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish

I found Shiver really unsatisfying at the time.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

After the Dead and Gone To Heaven EP, yeah, it did seem like there was something missing. I just realized where in my brain I grouped Rose Chronicles - with Kitchens of Distinction. 'Gish' is one of my all-time favorite albums, though when it came out I think I liked Walt Mink's 'Miss Happiness' more (which sounded a lot like 'Gish' and came out first).

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't stop listening to PopWillEatItself Cure for Sanity & This is the day etc, for some odd reason

The Corrs - Talk On Corners
The Cheeky Girls - The Cheeky Song.

Right now - Radio One.

schnell schnell, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

A variety of things so far -- More Fire Crew, Maddslinky and now the new Sea and Cake to see if it's actually any damn good or not...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

...and so far the music's okay but I remembered why I didn't think much of Mr. Prewitt. He sounds like Joe Cassidy from Butterfly Child but fronting some sort of wispy seventies AOR band. Er.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you mean Sam Prekop, Ned?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Prekop, that's it. Indie people confusion! I got the Pre right at least. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

hehe.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Just popped in Iron and Wine - The Creek Drank The Cradle. Such a good album.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

And anyway this album has good bits but unsurprisingly it's all wisp in the end. I'll probably keep the "Sound and Vision" cover just because I'm a Bowiephile and stick with Butterfly Child (and Tim Bowness' work).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Today: Pavement S&E Deluxe & Reduxe.

Yesterday: an all-Brazilian selection of Joyce, Os Mutantes and the Tropicalia comp. (OK, other than Astrud Gilberto, that's *all* the Brazilian music I own.) I've been reading Caetano Veloso's _Tropical Truth_, therefore the theme.

mike a (mike a), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Back on the "Chicago" soundtrack. I'm so obsessed, it's sad.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, Dan, what about "Chicago" is obsessive? I've been listening to it, on and off, for a couple of weeks and don't think I've become obsessed, yet. What am I not doing right?

Well, wait, if fantasizing about Bebe Neuwirth all the time is obsessed, then then I've already reached that benchmark.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Thursday, 13 February 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

What is the opposite of Coldplay? If I take a copy of his MP3s and open them in Soundforge and invert the waveforms and then play at the exactly the same time, can I cancel it out?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 13 February 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

He's now playing Richard Ashcroft's 'Science of Silence'. A fresh fucking merry hell. I really liked the early Verve stuff but this Chris Rea-wannabee solo stuff is a bit brain-numbing.

Lara: How does this spirit guide thing work? Like a magic 8-ball?

Alfie (Alfie), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, I spoke to soon, we're back to Coldplay.

Oooh, a student just complimented me on my Beta Band t-shirt. Woohoo!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, that Coldplay review is fantastic! I shall now print it out and put it in a frame on the wall above his desk.

The sigh is just an image, no wingding shenanigans.

Alfie (Alfie), Thursday, 13 February 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

! You have a handle named after a brilliant Seefeel song = you are cool.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the "tones" in allmusic.com - Seefeel are described as
"Ethereal, Reserved, Calm/Peaceful, Wintry, Trippy, Hypnotic, Detached".
Funnily enough, that's always what I wanted to be when I grew up! Not sure how I go about being wintry though...

One thing I enjoy before going home from 8 hours in front of the CRT is checking out the above allmusic.com descriptions of each artist I've listened to that day. The collection of adjectives always gives me a little lift and fools me briefly into thinking my day has been much more exciting than it actually was...

Hmmm, is that "Parsely, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme" I hear on Bowie's "Weeping Wall" - synth-folk, shurely shome mistake?

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure how I go about being wintry though...

You aim for being crisp and cool (as opposed to icy and sludgy).

I like this idea of adjective affirmation!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned's easily impressed. See, I have changed my name to an MBV song - he will profess undying love.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

As there was no song named "Nick Southall," I mock you thusly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Bugger, why didn't that register?

sue is fine (Nick Southall), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Now your joke is ruined and your transparent attempts to catch the attention of the Nediverse have FAILED, FAILED!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

There, that's better. I wrote an entire review of Spirit Of Eden based on those allmusic adjectives; 150 'describing' words and nowt else - it was crap. I'll rewrite it at some point so it's not so odd.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Mocked by Ned - can my day get any worse?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, I actually liked that Spirit of Eden review - made me want to dig it out and give it another chance! The power of adjectives is a curious thing, makes one man weep, makes another man sing...
*ahem* sorry...

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

You bastard! Quoting Huey in a conversation about Talk Talk! I want to watch Back To The Future now. Or read Am. Psycho. You liked the review? Thank you. I am intending to have another crack at doing the album justice over the weekend though. But tonight, I shall down a bottle of rioja and write about "i" by a.r.kane.

Demos of my band's newest slew of songs and my vocal butchery of them, in an attempt to sort out how to NOT to ruin them. (Jello Biafra, Les Claypool, why did I listen to you so much as a teenager! GRRR!!)

Um, Dan, what about "Chicago" is obsessive? I've been listening to it, on and off, for a couple of weeks and don't think I've become obsessed, yet. What am I not doing right?

I'm just obsessed with "Cell Block Tango" and "We Both Reached For The Gun" (or whatever its real name is). I keep playing them over and over and relive the scenes in my head and goon and smile.

Brian Jonestown Massacre - Methadrone.

Funny, cause I always think of this as my least favourite BJM album because it's so atypical of them, i.e. far more MBV-esque shoegazer than hippie-psych weirdness. But it's really, really lovely. And the lyrics are hitting me on a sickening deep and personal level.

When it comes down to it, I think Anton = My Momus. Except he's TERRIFIED of me... tee hee hee.

I found my walkman! On one side is ENTERTAINMENT! by gang of Four - sadly recorded spazzy so sound only appears in one ear. This is not optimal. On the other side there is a MIX. As far as I got on my journey to work, it has KRAFTWERK, Rainbow, Wheatus, T-Rex and Pinback on it.

Anna kindly let me go through the CDs and stuff that the local secondhand music store didn't want, and I took two CDs home with me. The first (an International DeeJay Gigolos 6 sampler) is annoying, all clips and processed voiceover, and you only get like 1:30 of each. The second, the unmixed CD from Botchit Breaks 5, is really good though. Thanks, Anna!

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Crikey, Jess, I think you might have broken my record. I bet you weren't even drunk either.

Today I have listened to:

AR Kane - 'i'
Miles Davis - In A Silent Way
Clipse - God Willin'
Massive Attack - 100th Window
Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief
Tatu - All the things she said
The Sundays - Goodbye (about 10 times in a row)
Juno - Once When I Was______ (a similar number of times)(oh crap does this mean I like emo?)
and assorted other mp3s on random

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

At work (note - I am not normally allowed to listen to music at work other than classical on NPR, but today my boss is out of the office):

Cat Power - You Are Free (This is the second time I have listened to it, I liked it better than the first time)
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

In the car:

Giddy Motors - Make It Pop ((Hi Yancey!) I bought this because I had read cool things about it, but now I've committed to writing a review of it as my first submission for a website, so now I have to listen to it 'seriously.')

Also Yancey: what do you think of the Ted Leo? I bought it because it is required of me as an "indie dude," but I wasn't totally expecting to like it because I was blah on Tyranny of Distance and his lame-ass solo live show that I referenced in other threads, but I like this one, all catchy and fast. He uses too many words though, your lyric sheet should not contain complete paragraphs. He needs an editor. Like me, when I write on threads.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

First of all, Giddy Motors is fantastic (tho I don't get the post-post-punk namechecking in the P'fork review). Reminds me of what 90 Day Men used to sound like (thus a mathed-up Unwound).

The Ted Leo I luv. Very surprised by how much I dig it. Tyranny bored me too, and I thought I could only luv him in Chisel mode, but this is just a very strong indie-rock record (something I thought I'd never want to hear again).

Oh, and the new ARE Weapons (which I'm finally getting around to listen to) is great. My ILM posts about it were totally off (tho as people they still blow).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

does NO ONE like that pre-tyranny ted leo record thats got all the semi-questionable tape-loop things on it?

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

No. No one likes that one. Because it blows.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

you are all nuts.

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

heh, its 50% genius and 50% useless...the useless bits are not entirely tied to the tapeloop bits either. i'd get it used if you see it

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, I emailed you.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 21 February 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess, I LOVE LOVE LOVE that Ted Leo record, precisely because it's partially crap. (This is the same reason I like Christina's _Stripped_ & _The Eminem Show_, too - I'm all for ego flexin'.) I am boggled by how many ILMers (um, three?) are bitching about _Tyranny of Distance_ being boring. Sweet crap on a stick.

Today featured 50 Cent (those non-"Wanksta" bonus tracks make the album), Josef K, and the M0un+@!n G0@+s' latest, which is fantastic!

Hmmm... Amazon have dispatched Future Days by Can but they still ain't got The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox in yet. The buggers.

Hmmm... Laughing Stock is (after three altered state listens) fantastic. Is it better than SoE? I dunno. It's even odder and less linear, at times Hollis sounds hoarse whch is weird. It's certainly astonishing. Best of the last 20 years? That's a BIG claim, give me time. I have a feeling that LS and SoE are gonna be inseperable.

Haven't really *wanted* to listen to anything recently: confronted with too many things needing to be listened to I just haven't been able to make a decision.

However today I had to make a short trip across town to run an errand & The Lefties provided the soundrack: just the correct length too with the beginning & end of the set coinciding with the insertion & withdrawal of the ignition key. 'Oil Fires' filled me with a sense of foreboding about going to work tomorrow - Thanks! guys.

About half a dozen London based ilxors' voices in the background of the recording as well.

''What's the Scelsi like, Julio? You seem pretty big on him these days.''

its something I like but i don't quite know why. all i can say is that he is very economical with his use of material (kinda like feldman) but the way he uses it is very different.

It's almost as if the same note is played over and over again but there are differences in pitch and duration that means that it doesn't matter.

There is a thread on ILM on him. do a search and there's more stuff there. I also gave a link to an article that tries to explain his music. its a bit technical for me.

Toby I liked the Tiga.

What I brought in today -

Dexy's - Searching For The Young Soul Rebels
Grace Jones - Slave To The Rhythm
Wire - 154
V/A - Hypercity
XTC - Apple Venus 1
Triffids - Australian Melodrama

I am feeling a bit fragile today, hence comfort listening like XTC and oddly the Triffids.

Angels of Light - Everything Is Good Here

The man keeps getting better I think. And hey, I helped fund the album. ;-)

As for me, so far nothing but the rain. Mmm, rain. I'll ponder what else I have here in a moment though. Mostly nostalgic listening as opposed to the eight million things I need to hear from this year alone! I still can't see how people even try to keep up anymore...

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 February 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Plump DJs-Fabric Live 08, it's a good mix, interestingly proggy. Never thought I'd say that about a record.

Also listening to Andy K's mix which he made for me, which I am enjoying, particularly the Black Strobe remix of Number One by Playgroup. I brought Les Rhythmes Digitales Dark Dancer with me but have yet to listen to it today.

Nick, there has been at least one thread on the subject of the Trojan boxes on ILM, and there are contributions there from the far more informed Dr C and Tim Hopkins. I was really enoying the DJs one today on the walkman, but it probably depends what you like best. Trojan's traditional great strength was the early stuff, like on the ska and rocksteady sets.
