Assuming you have a desk, what's on it (that's not work-related)?
Here's my list:
pic of my b/f, pic of my cat, pic of my band
2 mandatory (not really) green plants
candy - werther's originals and caramel squares (to be seasonal)
hot chamomile & hibiscus tea in my navy mug (what's your mug look like?)
angel figurine

That last thread was from December last year - surely you have all done some redecorating?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 14 October 2002 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

no time right now cos i'm.... going home! wooo! but tomorrow, full lowdown, i promise... maybe even a picture, if it's a camera fun day.

I was sighing over the state of my desk when I opened this thread. I have

two mugs. One nice art deco job and a freebie one to promote the Orb's last album.
A small stack of unusable currency (Guilders, Irish pounds, lira, pesetas)
Two bottles of nail varnish (one blue and cheap, one Chanel Rouge Noir)
Espresso set, four cups, four saucers.
CDs by Garlic, Cooper Temple Clause, Moco, Joy Division, The Breeders, Underworld, Technasia, Sigur Ross, a Mogul Electro compilation, a Skint records compilation (Ronan, the case is broken, but do you want it?) and three envelopes containing CDs that I haven't opened yet.
A Datsuns sticker.
An Emily the Strange sticker.
Issues of The Face 1994 - to present day.
Framed pic of my mates Emma and Jordan.
Pic of my cousins Matthew and Sophie.
A broken earring.
Eight red candles, still in box.
A tampon.
Two packets of blue Rizlas.
A Kerrang badge.
Nice glass ashtray from Venice.
Assorted business cards, recipts, post-its and press releases

and

a sewing machine.

This working from home thing is staring to get to me.

At work, the only non-work things on it are generally my mobile and my walkman (only when I'm there too, really). At home, loads of rubble, basically. CDs, cassettes, a clock/thermometer/humidity piece of crap, pills, bots of paper with scribbling, an empty glass, a book, a magazine, my A-Z, all sorts of rubbish.

Wait, this is the lying thread, right?

Yay for working in bed. Did that last night, just me, my notebook and the duvet. And the promise of The Office when I'd finished (I doubt anyone responding to this thread will have a pink vibrator on their desk).

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 07:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait that was an OFFICE reference not what *I* have on my desk/bed!

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 07:46 (twenty-three years ago)

AHAAAARGH, we know better, Archel, you dirty dirty girl. The office can be a very stressful place, we all know that, and sometimes one might need to relieve tension, innit.

Today I have all the usual guff on my desk including a load of contracts that I'm meant to be doing things with. However, last Friday there was a load of BOUZE and CHEESY BISCUITS on it as I was functioning as lackadaisical barmaid for pre-pub leaving drinks for a colleague. Jeez, I have 'colleagues' now, how grown-up am I? There's still half a carton of orange juice lurking behind some folders, which presents a rather too virtuous appearance for my taste.

I do have a Cat and Girl cartoon on my PC desktop, though, which surely is my attempt at being in that there loop.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay Cat and Girl! You sound like just the kind of person who should go and recommend some other webcomics on my webcomics thread. Or at least tell me whether I should pay for a Modern Webcomics (?) subscription so I can read all the New Adventures of Death back issues even though I don't like any of the strips by other authors I've read on the site. (I think I'll just buy a Cat and Girl t-shirt and then realise I have no excuses to wear it instead.)

I had two days off with a cold, so now my desk is buried in thousands of bits of paper belonging to my officemate. Grr. He has been known to put greasy sandwiches on top of my timesheet, at least I've been spared that this week. Also there's a half-empty drinks can, which is my caffeine source of the afternoon, and two empty bottles; the bottles have been there for weeks, I should throw them out but I keep meaning to take them home so they can be recycled and forgetting.

Rebecca (reb), Tuesday, 15 October 2002 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicely done, pp! I love a clean desk. My job is about 96% computers so my only weakness is post its and food containers.

If anyone was in the market for a Sun Belt media guide from the last decade, you're going to have to talk to my co-worker Todd now.

seven months pass...

So here's a deal: At long last, my office is being expanded into another part of the building and my "team" get to be the ones to claim the new area.

Even better, I've talked my way into having a corner seat facing the window. Pretty cool view of the Main Street Bridge, Statehouse Convention Center, stupid trollies, etc.

But there's this wrinkle. Not that my new space is ruined or anything, but they're keeping a door in front of mine and my co-worker's desks.

Here's a rough sketch:

http://i612.photobucket.com/albums/tt203/pplains/Pp-Office_zps3801230a.gif

The windows are blue. The door is yellow. The magenta stripe illustrates the path to the door from the rest of the office. My desk is marked by green.

Pay attention to the measurements: seriously, there's only like 18-24 inches, 50- 75 cm, of space between the back of our desks and the door.

It's not going to be our front door or anything, but I don't think it's going to be an exit only fire egress either.

Does this seem strange to any of you? Legal? Have you ever seen this set-up before?

I think the door swings the other way, but still.

Folks, COVID-19 is causing much death, illness and distress across the world. It's a suffering that is going to affect each and every one of us.

And I am absolutely here in the office for it.

I work in a 2nd line IT support team, so my desk is covered in IT crap. A selection of the current mess:

  • over a dozen broken smartphones
  • my company issue smartphone (working but old)
  • (in a laptop stand) my old company issue Win 10 laptop...
  • ...connected to a 24" widescreen monitor
  • my new company issue Win 10 laptop
  • mouse
  • same keyboard I've had for four years, somewhat of a record around here
  • VoIP phone
  • wireless headset connected to phone and laptop
  • coffee mug from DevSecOps conference
  • badge with flashing LEDs from a different DevSecOps conference
  • my actual coffee mug
  • laptop with corrupted SSD that I'm fixing for someone
  • (usually) my personal mobile on charge
  • (under the desk) my rucksack
  • my walking boots, or my work boots if I've only just got in or am about to leave for the day
  • also under the desk, a wheeled drawer cabinet containing who-knows-what random IT garbage

now that I'm WFH my "desk" is my living room table. On the desk: laptop, Verso book I'm using as a mousepad, and a notepad. Laptop's hooked up to my TV as a second monitor.
