I need to get some furniture. Especially a desk. But then Suzy keeps handing me Ikea catalogues and I look through them for about two minutes before my mind glazes over and I think "well, maybe it's not so bad carrying on with a few milk crates and some Muji boxes... really?"

I do like going to Ikea, though. It's so ... overwhelming. Especially if you go there with design whores like Suzy and my mate Jesse.

I got shelves from a big warehouse furniture place called The Dump which look just like the Billy shelves. You still have to assemble them yourself, but anyway... maybe you should check out some el cheapo stores for that sort of thing...

I went to IKEA at Brent Cross a few weeks back, got a very nice bookcase and a CD storage thingie. But, be warned when you get out of the check out you can't take your stuff round to the car on a trolley as you can't get them out of the loading area! So, you have to bring the car round or lug it by hand.

Starry, come one wintry Saturday with me to the beautiful Croydon store (accessible by modern tram at Waddon Marsh - sod North London and its non-motorist hating ways) and we shall buy pegs and translucent tupperware together.

Ikea's lure is such that, on a recent drive from NYC to DC, we had to pull off the interstate at 9:30pm to have a quick scamper around the Baltimore branch before it shut. I was able to show a travelling companion our kitchen without him ever visiting our flat!

Now I've seen DROMME in the black'n'white flesh, I don't know whether to recommend it anymore. With its cheap sliding doors, it looks a bit duff, even if it does hold EIGHT HUNDRED AND EIGHTY-TWO compact discs.

Noooo, we have local furniture chain stores, ones with tasteful wooden furniture that look timeless and classic in that your grandparents could've easily bought similar furniture a long time ago. Absolutely nothing to laugh at, nothing to consider temporary. Pier One Imports is just as boring. The only place to go to for anything remotely space-age is the Container Store, which I admit deep addictions to.

We've just got like three Kohl's department stores, though. Yay. The commercials for that place are v. entertaining. :)

My one Ikea purchase this month was the STRALA lamp, a very cheap ($22) 'fiberoptic' device - it's basically a tiny little central bulb with a bunch of clear plastic fibers emanating from a shell around the bulb that provide a sparkly shell effect (but admittedly not much light). But it's very cool. And when friends come over I call it my own pet name, "Hairy Disco Ball" (to the tune of "Shiny Disco Balls"). If I'm in the mood I'll suggest stroking it.

Their Expedit bookshelves are absolutely perfect for lps. I also bought Ingolf chairs there a month ago and they're great - so easy to put together and sturdy.

Consider purchasing your futon from a futon store. They'll allow you to compare different futons: amount of cotton wadding vs. open cell rubber foam, even memory foams are now available. Also you'll be able to see and judge the actual wood (finished solid tropical hardwood is the norm). I have one that has survived 16 years and 8 moves and still assembles tightly.

I love IKEA for its housewares and general design aesthetic, but for most furnishings you are getting particle board frames/uprights/shelves. Good until you spill anything, it otherwise gets wet, or the fitting for the hardware gets worn out in a few moves. Their metal framed furnishing is as good as any, I guess, and their commercial office wood furnishings are 5/8" oriented strand board with oak veneers, rather than the the 1/2" photolaminated particle board of a lot of their product.

i had a beddinge for 3 years that i used as a bed. it's alright. it's a metal frame, which is why i was leaning towards that rather than a particle/wadding loveseat. but futons just look so... futony.

One of the boys in the loft had a Klippan but I thought it was rly uncomfortable and the wrong scale for me. The arms are too high to actually lean on, and I felt boxed in.

^^ came here to post almost exactly that xxp. wife & i were planning on buying a futon-like sofa from ikea. we just bought a regular futon for like $100 more and it's so, so much better. actually it was a loveseat-style futon. "lounger" or something like that

We bought 2 of these Tullsta chairs to use as reading chairs. They fit perfectly in the space, etc etc, but they are awful to sit in long-term. The foam in the seat cushion is just not up to it. So watch out for that - they rate the foam in lb/cu.ft. and the higher numbers are better.

I went to Ikea today and bought a shower curtain, a shower curtain liner, two clothes covers, and two place mats. I got a parking space right in front of the entrance. I didn't mind buying things made of polyester. I was reminded of Ikea's characteristic smell, which is like their blond wood, with an aftertaste, like a Swedish version of McDonald's.
