What foods do you crave?

I have recently been craving oily fish like a man possessed. I've been working my way through all the tinned fishies on the supermarket shelf - mackerel, herring, sardines, sild, skipper, tuna - and it's not going away. Yum! I am salivating thinking about them. It is lunchtime, though.

I also have been craving pork pies, which signifies the start of my spiralling into a festive binge of lard and more lard and booze and some lard. I am just managing to stave off my craving for green vegetables, but I'm sure my current diet means it's just around the corner.

So what about you? What do you crave?

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

wine gums

jel -- (jel), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

sushi, fish & chips, lamb curry

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

chocolate, chocolate, choccie, choccie, arrrggh, mmmmm, yum yum indiefood CHOCOLATE!!!

oh, you mean, like, actual FOOD? I crave eggs a lot. and kale. mmmm, kale, i just bought some at sainsburys today, cannot wait to steam it up, dump it in my stir fry and CONSUME. i know this is a symptom of anaemia, and i'm probably just craving the iron.

kate, Monday, 2 December 2002 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Yes! I craved (and bought and ate at the bus stop) a pork pie on Thursday. Mmm, spicy pink pork and gelatine and fatty pastry, yum.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

japanese, italian and indian food. hence us going to those types of restaurants every week or preparing italian/japanese food.

nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

People crave foods other than chocolate???

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The only food I have regular pangs for but can't normally get hold of is beef jerky. I finally found a shop (at Victoria Coach Station) that sells it. Brazilian, but nice and peppery.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

PRAWNS

alix (alix), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

thai, vietnamese and korean all of which tragically are unavailable in addis. this explains the binges i go on when abroad.

H (Heruy), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Lucy, my local butcher has beef jerky. And biltong. Is that enough to persuade you to come down South-west over Xmas?

I forgot about oil. I have a *need* to slaver olive oil over almost everything I eat (except pork pies. I mean, you can go too far...). Are my joints trying to tell me something?

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Cod liver oil's what you need, Mark. Yum yum, fishy burps. I am down south from 22-29 December.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i've had a craving for nice steamed chicken with ginger, spring onions and garlic. GOT SOME LAST NIGHT it was great. mmm aromatic

Fancy a snog?

k chu, Monday, 2 December 2002 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh i had some home-made biltong t'other week (my boss is south african), tasted a bit like leather and a bit like beef and also spicy. i don't think i'll be craving it somehow...

i do occasionally crave cowley road kebab kid chicken donner naans as all the chicken kebabs in london are so-called "proper" and don't have nice tikka-y bits on the edges and aren't served in NAANS...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

mark C, get yourself some real oily fish. Get some nice mackerel roll them in some oats and fry them with cubed bits of bacon. Or go for the king of oily fish and get some kippers. Grill them and smear them with butter.

I'm craving christmas cake having made some yesterday but It can't be had yet.

Ed (dali), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

CHIPS!!! i also seem to be putting tomato ketchup on a lot of my foods these days, despite the fakt that it drives me up the WALL when b/f does it.

katie (katie), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

CAKE!

(it really doesn't matter what kind. as long as it's not carrot cake. Keep your damn vegetables out of my cake, fool!)

(and pork pies are good as long as they don't have lots of jelly between the meat and the pastry. Pork pie jelly mings.)

caitlin (caitlin), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

a pork pie is not a pork pie unless it contains jelly. (because I and the good pie making folk of melton mowbray say so)

Ed (dali), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Pizza! Deep pan, stuffed crust hawaiian if you please.

And pasta.

And healthy things.

Not fried egg sandwiches. I had TWO of them on Sunday and I still feel really gross about it and ph34r I haf been put off eggs for a while. *shudder*

Sarah (starry), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Pickled onions - i could easily eat a whole jar in one sitting. And i wonder why i'm still single.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a pork pie now,

Ed (dali), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I go on occaisonal ramen noodle binges.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Monday, 2 December 2002 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I have been chocolate-free for about 6 days now, since a RikWalleresque epiphany on those callous scales at Boots that tell you your 'ideal weight' as well as your actual weight. I am not craving it yet, but plan to fall from grace spectacularly round about December 23rd.

I often crave curry.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

how could i forget pizza? i don't count it as a craving, really. i crave pizza like i crave, erm, oxygen, really.

kate, Monday, 2 December 2002 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Pork pie jelly is the best bit!

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i often crave MARMITE as well, and crisps. but not together (salt overload!) i have a PORKLESS PIE (with ketchup) for lunch. it was greasy!

katie (katie), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheesy Findus Crispy Pancakes, what they don't sell in any local supermakets.

Graham (graham), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I often crave olives, hummous and taramasalata. And, for some reason, tomato juice.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

beef jerky = dog chew, shurely?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

findus crispy pancakes - food of the 80s

Ed (dali), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

right now, food in general, because it's two hours away from lunch. french toast, linguine, ravioli, a hot roast beef sandwich, clam chowder, lentil soup, very crispy-crusted pizza or bread...not cravings, though, just longings. my stomach's growling is nonspecific.

what am i going to get? probably a cold turkey sandwich because there's nachos and tacos in the hot line, two of the schools most outstandingly disgusting meals (outdone by stir fry, the single worst offering). grouse mutter mutter.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

beef jerky = dog chew, shurely?

oooh! cross-thread MONOBRANE w/ Madchen!

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mm pickled onions. And mm carrot cake (you are SO wrong Caitlin). But not together, probably.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dill Pickles. mmm...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

aaah this book just mentioned turkish coffee and baklava. I WANT SOME!

Maria (Maria), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone who confuses baklava with balaclava is in for a shock.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 2 December 2002 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

PICKLED ONIONS mmmm! i drink the vinegar straight from the jar = i am hardcore!

katie (katie), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

pickled shallots in hot and spicy vinegar from sainsbury's

Ed (dali), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Pork pie too. Better still gala pie, mmmmm, crispy pastry, hard-boiled egg, fatty pork filling & BEST OF ALL the gelatine! The tastiest bit in some pies because they add the seasoning to it. Actually I have been contemplating writing to the Pork Pie Bakers Association as hardly any pork pies contain enough jelly nowadays.

Not like when I were a lad.

Pork pies must be very comforting. A very lapsed vegetarian I know very well enjoys them almost as much as she does bacon.

Mooro (Mooro), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Gala pie is great because of LONG EGG!

My Uncle Gil in Oxford used to grow super strong onions in his allotment, then Auntie Gwen (she of the pigeons' milk) would pickle them in super strong vinegar. And they were nearly as good as jerky.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Madchen, I am so disappointed that my father has moved back here from South Africa (temporarily, he's off to Bangladesh in January), as this means he can no longer make and send me biltong - proper beef jerky FOR MEN. With added spices as you wish. Phwoarrgh. And very good for jaw muscles, although nearly as bad for weak teeth as hard toffee.

However, 'pigeons' milk'? What fresh hell is this?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a tremendous hankering for smoked salmon and salmon caviar -- look out Trader Joe. Also celery and pumpkin cheesecake.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my, where to begin. Any number of brilliant cheeses, thin crisp crackers, good riojas, dark chocolates, the best chorizo ever created, Ethiopian food in general (with Ethiopian beer of course)...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Pigeons Milk

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 2 December 2002 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Six DAYS without chocolate, Archel? It's a long time since I've gone six waking hours without chocolate!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 2 December 2002 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

now i want beef stew, because it's in the oven and smells beautiful and we just have to wait for dad to get home (GET HOME ALREADY)

Maria (Maria), Monday, 2 December 2002 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now I want NACHOS with all the fixin's. NACHOS!

Chriddof (Chriddof), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Everytime I take a nap, I wake up wanting candy. The other night, I wanted a hot milkshake (if there were such a thing). I would never crave anything as disgusting as oily fish. BLECH!

Mandee, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

All I want today is lamingtons. This is very rare. Usually it's cake with pink icing and fresh cream.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want marzipan. I mean what the hell kind of craving is marzipan? And WHY do candy makers keep making marzipan into pig shapes?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

anchovies

minna (minna), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicken tikka masala! Dammit, why are there no good Indian restaurants in my neighborhood...

Jen (nstop), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 05:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh now you've got me wanting Indian food. Mmmmm for a good lamb biranyi (sp?) or chicken tandoori. But in my case it's the money that the matter, boo hoo.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I craved marzipan all through fourth grade and it got me into some trouble, believe me.

Paul Eater (eater), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Saag Ghost

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Biscuit dough. Especially gingerbread.

Livvie, Tuesday, 3 December 2002 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Rum Ball dough and Anzac dough. I have eaten many, many bowlfuls of both in my life, and always felt very unwell as a result.

toraneko (toraneko), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:06 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell are they? They sound good

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I craved MEAT. And I went into Sainsbury's and lo! The popeseye steak was reduced. And you got 200 extra points. So my humungous steak worked out at one pound and fifty three pence. And I cooked it rare on the stripy pan. And I made some garlicky sauteed potatoes. And I ate it ALL. Watching 'Stenders.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Buy happy meat from real butchers

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Go piss on your own chips

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

We had DEEP PAN STUFFED "edge" hem-hem Pizza Super Go-Go or whatever yr called pizza last night! It was the MEATY ONE.

I now do not want pizza.

I want... er... probably some crisps, but there's always a low-level craving for crisps anyway. I am currently without a food fetish.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I will not. Its often cheaper than the super market although admittedly not that cheap. However I have a good relationship with my butcher and he always throws in extra rashers of bacon or bits of mince and stuff.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Proper butchers are a good thing, I agree. You just expressed this fact in a unnecessarily rude way.

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I apologise

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I am convinced you are all making these foods up! "Lamingtons"! "Anzac dough"! "Pizza Super-Go-Go"! This isn't helping me get past my "all ILXors are space aliens" theory, you know

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm. I remember the 'real butcher' on Loughborough Road.

Stepping in there would have been INSANITY!!!

I shudder to think what meat he REALLY sold.

I am also a bit scared of the Oirish Meat Market in Peckham.

Actually I am just scared cos I don't understand the weights of things. I will have to get a tutorial from Lixi so I do not make a fool of myself for asking for a gallon of prime rib or something.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My Mum buys good meat from a good butcher because she is rich and has one close by. I am not and do not.

Price check:

1 x Steak £1.53
1 x Tin Goose Fat £2.49

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

YAY! Goose fat!!!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

The butcher near my new home is a stereotypical fellow: plainly of stout yeoman stock, he is ruddy-faced and has a ready smile and a wink for the customers. He can afford to smile and wink of course because he has a GREAT BIG MEAT CLEAVER in his hand and he's ALREADY COVERED IN BLOODSTAINS.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmmmmm biltong. It's so expensive in London, though.

Have I ever mentioned that my dad was a butcher, Tim? He wasn't terribly ready with the smile and wink, but otherwise accurate.

Mashed potato.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Chocolate (always), vanilla ice cream & gingerale floats, sweet potatos, pasta, pizza pockets.

Blimey what kind of trouble can that sort of thing get you into, it seems quite innocent.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he thought marzipan could be found inside of training bras.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

My god, do I crave sushi right now as I haven't eaten all day and must run off to a surprise b-day party (not held at a restaurant, unfortunately). However, the thought of a hot milkshake is taking the edge off my appetite, luckily.

two years pass...
Please recommend extremely vinegary tnings to eat before I pour myself a very large glass of vinegar and drink it straight.

I really don't know what the hell is wrong with me--I have never had such a strong urge to consume ANYTHING, not chocolate, not alcohol, not nothin! I'm definitely not preggers, so this is very perplexing and distracting. I don't even really feel hungry, just this overwhelming urge that I must must must eat vinegar NOW!

So far I have eaten half a very large jar of pepporoncini (including drinking the liquid straight from the jar), doused my salad with so much vinegar that the lettuce pretty much disintigrated, and downed a bag of Utz salt and vinegar chips (which, by the way, were a long, long way from being sufficintly vinegary). I've also eaten lots and lots of cornichons (and drank their liquid out of that jar, too).

Help.

have some goat cheese. Tangy but with enough calories to make you feel like you've actually had something. I had some today and it was just marvelous, I've been craving vinegary/tangy stuff through my pregnancy.

quincie, Wednesday, 12 October 2005 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

how much acidity can the human body handle?
Does Vinegar Have Calories or Fat?
Most vinegars contain insignificant amounts of some or all of the mandatory nutrients required in nutrition labeling. Nutrition labeling is not required if the product contains insignificant amounts of all of the following components (calories, total fat, saturated fat, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium, total carbohydrate, dietary fiber, sugars, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium and iron) as outlined in the Chapter 21, Section 101.9(j)(4) of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) Code of Federal Regulations. Most vinegars have less than one calorie per one tablespoon serving and no fat. Seasoned vinegars may contain more calories due to the added ingredients. Check the label of your favorite vinegar product to determine the nutrition information for that product.

How Strong is the Vinegar You Can Buy at Retail?
The strength of vinegar is measured by the percent of acetic acid present in the product. All vinegar sold in the United States at the retail level should be at least 4% acidity as mandated by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Typical white distilled vinegar is at least 4% acidity and not more than 7%. Cider and wine vinegars are typically slightly more acidic with approximately 5-6% acidity.

How Can Vinegar Clean My Counters and Flavor My Pickles?
The acid in vinegar cuts through the grease and germs on your counter tops and is also the ingredient that makes your favorite pickles so tart and safe to eat by inhibiting bacteria and mold. See the “Uses and Tips” section of the Web site for other ideas for using this versatile product.

on a fucking grilled roll.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 13 October 2005 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, have you tried a Filet O'Fish? They're good. Especially if you ask for extra sauce and they remember to put it on. I remember when I used to work at McDonald's we would sometimes put ridiculous amounts of "extra" when the customer asked for it. There was a chicken sandwich that got returned by an angry drive-thru customer because it had about as much mayonnaise as sandwhich. Imagine actually coming in from the drive-thru to complain that your "extra mayonnaise" was too much mayonnaise! I remember the guy wanted to know "what my problem" was. I looked him straight in the eye and said, "I was told like 3 or 4 times to put extra mayonnaise on it, they kept saying, 'he wants a LOT of mayonnaise,' so I kept putting more on because I thought you wanted a ridiculous amount of mayonnaise." Boy, that was living dangerously, I tell you. I remember wrapping up cheeseburgers with extra pickles to the point that they looked like extra large Big Macs just barelly able to fit in the yellow wrapping paper.

I used to make some great sandwiches. Filet O'Fish Big Macs with 2 fish patties, tartar sauce and Big Mac sauce, extra cheese, lots of little onions and pickles. But, they were mostly disgusting. The regular McDonald's Filet O'Fish is the greatest fast food sandwhich there is.

I crave crisps. I also crave yoghurt covered raisins.

The only thing I don't crave (or can't stand much) is Japanese rice. Very weird, because I usually LOVE it.

I had a dried fruit craving period for like a month. It seems to have calmed down, but then I haven't had any dried fruiot lately except the sultanas in my bran flakes and some dried cranberries a couple of nights ago. I think it's pretty clear I'm just not getting enough vitamins.

The vinegar thing is weird, though. Any update, Quincie?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 13 October 2005 09:55 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the drinking-vinegar-straight think kinda quelled the craving for a while, but even after stuffing myself with a pasta dinner last night, I had to fight the urge to polish off that huge bottle of pepperoncini.

Just thinking about them is making my mouth water.

My tummy hurts not at all after all that abuse, but my lips/tongue are kinda fried!

I always crave V8 "citrus splash" fruit and veg juice. It feels like liquid health. I'm drinking one now, I drink about three a day.

I am craving Ethiopian food right now. I was spoiled while I lived in Atlanta, which has 3-4 Ethiopean restaurants, I used to go every weekend, or once every two weeks. Now that I'm in Athens, I haven't had Ethiopean in 2 months, and would do anything for some Ye Beg Tibs or Gore Gored. Mmmmmm...

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 13 October 2005 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

Come to DC, there are like ten Ethiopian restaurants in Adams Morgan alone..

I am craving a really nice salade chèvres + a crepe with Nutella, which you could get at Chez Antoine in Adams Morgan (or Nutella ice cream!), but it isn't there any more. sad.

Cathy (Cathy), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Together they are delicious.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

I think there's usually some kind of seasoning - Mexican? - involved as well.

Alone, Jealous and SSRI'd (kate), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

The seasonings and method of preparation depends on where the cook is from (or the recipe I guess). There's PR, Cuban, New Orleans, Carribean, Spanish, Mexican, etc etc.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

and Brazilian, which is what that place i linked to is! although it's pretty similar to the other stuff.

i think my favorite place for rice and beans in NY is "Margon", on 46th between 7th and bway - but at all these types of places, where rice and beans are one of the main attractions, you only need to ask yourself two things: white rice or ywllow rice? and black beans or red beans?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah they're all fairly similar, I mean it's rice and beans. I prefer yellow rice + black beans, btw.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:18 (nineteen years ago)

WHEN YOU MAKE YR RICE AND BEANS DO YOU THROW IN THE HAM HOCK? COS I DO NOT.

turkey clubs (but especially from the sadly defunct rt 28 diner in salem, NH)
pie (any sort at all)
cake (but especially carrot with cream cheese frosting and toasted coconut shreds on top/sides, oooooooooooo)

AaronK (AaronK), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Black Beans (for your rice):

Sautee diced onions, garlic and cumin powder in olive oil. Once cumin scent gets strong, add 2 tablespoons sofrito (you vcan get this at any decent bodega in the NYC area) plus half your can of beans. Mash up other half of can. Low heat throughout all this. Add salt, a dash of red wine vinegar and a little water. Once it gets to bubblin', add mashed beans. Stir, cover, low heat for about 10 minutes. This is guaranteed no joke over yr rice.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

Oh it's so so easy and cheap to make your own sofrito and you can keep it for ages.

Maduros = the bomb

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Those bean dirrex sound fab.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:59 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost) It is. My mom makes her own, but I'm too lazy. Funny thing is, I stopped eating rice so now I don't know what to eat my habichuelas with.

And maduros, tostones *are* the bomb. I was a fat little boy.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Eh I can understand being lazy, I just happen to be in love with my food processor. I used to buy a whole lot of that kind of thing store bought just cos I hated chopping things up.

Why you don't eat rice? If you liquid up the recipe a little more you could totally make that into a black bean soup.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Uhh I DO make a black bean soup that way, more or less! First brown up bacon in pan, then add the beans & veg & seasonings. Mash 'em up a bit at the end, stir in sour cream and/or shredded jack cheese.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Oh but food processors? Not for soups. Soup goes in the BLENDER, which has a lid that can be SEALED AGAINST LIQUID.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

I use chicken stock and/or the liquid from the canned beans, btw, to keep the consistency at "soupy".

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

Food processors are for the SOFRITO not for the SOUP, but really if you want to go that way what you really need is an immersion blender so you don't even have to go through the bother of pouring things back and forth. Yeah bitches, I pimped my kitchen, that's right!

now I'm craving duck of all things.

xpost oh I never use the liquid from the canned beans but I actually can't even tell you what I would use because I change it constantly.

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just sayin' about the blender because I learned the hard way. FYI: the hard way involves sponging dried black bean soup off the wall behind the fridge some 4 months later.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Allyzay - Don't eat rice 'cause it makes me sluggish, bloated. I feel lots better since I stopped. Basmati's ok, though. It's funny how I've given up certain things this year that I used to love ingesting, mainly because they didn't treat me as well as they used to: rice, coffee, cigarettes. Haven't lost much weight, though, but I do feel better. I hope I never have to give up pizza.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha yeah that's no good. The other thing to think about though is that I always put together my blender incorrectly and end up with liquids spilling out the bottom like crazy. This is because I'm an idiot.

xpost I would rather give up my left hand than give up pizza forever. I just got a pizza stone so that reminds me I have to make some pizza. YIKES I have a lot on my list this week cos I was also going to make ravioli.

OK I'm starting to worry about the eating I've been doing lately right about now on this thread, yeah.

I want coffee now too!

Allyzay Rofflesbot (allyzay), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

This amazing chicken dish I used to get at an Indian place in NJ. It was sort of like Chicken Tikka, chicken breast rubbed in spices and stuff, but I think they used cilantro and mint because it was neon green on the outside. So good.

Janssen's temptation, anything with anchovies, cheese as I rarely eat it due to migraines. Chocolate for the same reason. Chips, roast potatoes, lamb chops.
