i forgot that i wasn't meant to be listening to music and i put on johnny cash's covers of "hurt" and "in my life", 50 cents's "heat", the soft pink truth's "for satie", erik b & rakim's "my melody" (why did nobody bring this up as a major reference pt. for "grindin'"? 'sides the way obv sonic similarities - cavernous bass offset by delicate twinkly noises - g'n even references it directly: "back yard to yard"!), andrew wk's "we want fun" and gza's "shadowboxing".

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 3 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

A flock of seagulls, not the band.

What I'm listening to right now is Home & Away on the TV downstairs. Hmmm. Lovely.

My (rather feeble) CD/tape collection is packed because we're theoretically moving house quite soon. Which means I'll probably start wanting to listen to rubbish I can't normally stomach anymore just because it's all taped up in a box in the spare room...

ChristineSH, Monday, 3 March 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Azita album on Drag City

Nathan Webb (Nathan Webb), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The Moldy Peaches S/T

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 3 March 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Started on Trojan Dub box set.
Currently playing a mad comp named Saturday Night After Hours Session, which surprisingly is a drum & bass comp, with three style-setting classics from Goldie, Reece and Bukem, and the other 11 tracks all by A-Sides under nine identities. In between tracks someone impersonates Mick Jagger badly.
Except while I was typing that finished, so I've now put on Way Out North, which was free with Jockey Slut, and is a Norwegian comp supported by their Ministry of Trade and Industry.

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir Hongro has prompted within me a yearning for very rhythmically-charged stuff; right now I'm grooving Fela Kuti's Expensive Shit, I just finished listening to Common's Electric Circus, and next up will be, uh, Rusted Root's When I Wake.

I listened to FSOL's Lifeforms single last night, and I think Simon Reynolds was being a little too hard on them. I don't agree with their rhetoric, but the music is not as asphyxiated as Reynolds claimed it was in Gen Ecs. On the other hand, Reynolds probably formed his view on FSOL back when the IDM/Hardcore schism was more important.

I've been a Coyne fan for years and years Andrew. You have spent insufficient time looking through my music. I have seen him live too (he looked rather like old British wrestler Les Kellett, and sounded even more like him)(also, the tickets said 8pm and when we got there at like 8.10 he was already started!).

Also heard a rumor that David Essex is very ill. Any details?

Styx.
The band. It's also a word that sounds funny if you listen to the records. At least, the records sound funny. Welcome to the grand illusion. They gave so much to the industry, and only received suffering in return. Styx--the only band you'll ever need. Or they'll hunt you down and kill you. With their music.

This has got to stop...
From the 'Words that look funny if you stare at them for too long' thread. Yes, cross-posting may be evil, but it feels sooooo right.

Styx! Now and ... and ... and then.

That Morphine disk is one of my all-time favorite albums. I'm so glad I got to see them live before Sandman died. :-(

One of the better shows I ever saw was here at UCI in 1994 or so -- Morphine played, and halfway through the set the power for the PA died. They asked us if we wouldn't mind them continuing without (we didn't), and they did so. Class. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Saw Morphine a few times as well here in good ole Beantown....loved every second of it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 13 March 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's very good ooops, I like it. Not the greatest rapper of all time, but some really nice production. The four tracks are each about 15 minutes long, but they're not at all prog-hop, they're divided into little bits that flow through each other and repeat themes, I guess a bit like a hip-hop Abbey Road side 2, or a less 'spot-the-sample'-oriented B-Boy Bouillabaise.

Now - Talking Heads - Remain In Light
Tonight - Raekwon - Only Built For Cuban Linx

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 15 March 2003 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit the Louvins are so good. How can such perfect records exist -- and so many of them! "When I Stop Dreaming," "A Tiny Broken Heart," "I Wish It Had Been a Dream," "If I Could Only Win Your Love." I want to sing like that so badly, and those perfect concise guitar breaks.... I used to be a little wary of that echoe-y '50s studio sound, as compared with the dry sound of the Delmores' 30s and early '40s records, but if you're dog-tired and drunk and put your ears about five inches from the speakers... Er I think I'm floating. Weeeeoooooooo.

Amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 15 March 2003 09:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooooo if anyone is even better than the Louvins it's the BSBs. Well the Louvins had better songs I think but the BSBs had the more unique harmonies.

Have you heard Karl and Harty? (They did the originals of "Kentucky" and "I'm Just Here to Get My Baby Out of Jail.") You might like them too, they're great.

"Spacek - Vintage Hi-Fi
Details!"

I haven't heard Curvatia Andy and at the moment my headphones make everything sound tinny and awful, but this (their brand-spankin' new second album BTW) is striking me as a bit "eh". Soul/R&B without grooves or melodies is interesting idea but also maybe a bit self-defeating? I guess the impressive production is where it's at, but again it's hard to tell without a better listening device.

Then again, I've only heard it once.

Now, what's all this M. Mayer stuff you and Jess are talking about?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 20 March 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I just ran over and bought the last of Dylan's 70s records I don't have, but listening to them has been preempted by CNN. But "nothing" seems to be going on, so maybe I'll listen to them after all.

I could never really listen to the Gang of Four for those reasons, Jess.

Amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 20 March 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

normally it doesn't bother me - and "to hell with poverty" and "love like anthrax" are still some of my fave singles ever - but it was mostly from looking at the back of the LP sleeve:

"Those who decide what everyone will do grow rich because the decision are made in their interests.
They are pleased at how well they rule the others.
The others smile too, thinking their rulers know the best."

i don't need my pop music delivering the empty truisms real life does for me every day.

oh blinkin' heck tell me about hangover music! (i only had one guinness last night, and kate stuck to cappuccino because she had to keep a clear head for reviewing áhem)

actually i am listening to summer music today; junior senior album (i'm giving cat power a rest, on nathalie's orders) plus divine 2-CD kool & the gang comp. reminded myself of what quickspace sound like on record, but they are INFINITELY better live! (there is apparently a new album due out "soon," but that might be "Soon" in the MBV sense, i.e. 2016)

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 25 March 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm listening to the improv tape that Julio made me. It's cool, it reminds me of my very early broken acoustic guitar tape recorder music, and that's a good thing (if you are me).

Comtron - Greed and Finance EP
It's Eco-Electro, and nothing to do with Komatron. I would have uploaded some weeks ago but I just can decide if it works as single tracks or you need the whole thing. Obviously you need the whole thing. I also fell for the packaging - black label, black sleeve and a photo of two guys holding a fish with a story of the day they'd had together.

Currently MP3 playlists. My House In Montmartre is ready to go. I have a sackful of albums with me but I'm not sure which I'll listen to. Something called Urban Essentials vol. 4 which seems to be a promo of this and next month's r&b and hip-hop UK release singles and has some nice tunes on it. 2 Chemical Brothers albums. I've rediscovered an interest in Elvis Costello, so him too.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 March 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom - where did you find My House in Montmatre? I've been curious about it for ages but haven't really seen a copy around.

A fuck of a lot of Psychic TV this morning. Now, Prince's Sign O the Times, specifically "Slow Love," which I am guessing is the Jam of Choice for at least three specific posters on this board.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 27 March 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

More "American Life" today; juxtaposed with the Chemicals' "Hey Girl Hey Boy" that track is like the best thing ever.

I've got a whole bunch of stuff on shuffle today; at the moment I'm listening to "Paranoia" by Apoptygma Berzerk and it's just brilliant.

Matt Pond PA - the nature of maps

Nada Surf - Let Go

both are fucking amazing.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 31 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist - it was "McTell," though today it was Blind Willie Jackson, and more of the American Roots Music collection, and more of the Lomax stuff (prison songs, I think).

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I am very surprised to hear at this exact moment, that I put "THE MAN THEY LOVE TO HATE" by the STRANGLERS on this minidisc immediately following an acoustic "Find the Answer Within" by the Boo Radleys. I love listening to old, unlabeled comps that I've made.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha Laura I am listening to Angola Prisoners' Blues. There is a beautiful track of a woman--Thelma Mae Joseph--singing "I'm Still in Love with You" to the accompaniment of a churning laundry machine.

Before I was listening to Caetano Veloso's Uns.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had the Quarterflash song "Harden My Heart" playing in my head for the last 9 hours. SWEET JESUS MAKE IT STOP.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Greetings, Amateurist. That "Angola Prisoners' Blues" that you've mentioned sounds rather fascinating. I'm going to have to check it out.

There's an album out that I can't recall the name of - it's a compilation/fund-raiser for, a homeless project. If you ever come across something along those lines, can you (er, "you" being anyone reading this) let me know? Many thanks.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryoji Ikeda - +/- (I don't really like tracks 4-6 as much as the rest)
Joaquin Rodrigo - Concierto de Aranjuez (perf John Williams) (several times)
Frederico Torroba - Castles of Spain (perf Andre Segovia)
Bob Dylan - Blood On the Tracks (for a class. I can't get into this at all.)
Cheap Trick at Budokan (a little disappointing on first listen)
Lungbutter - Dr Rush's 'Tranquilizer'

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ac/dc - high voltage
dmx - the great depression
tim's greatest beatz vol. 2
radiohead - hail to the theif (pee-you!)
les savy fav - 3/5
missy elliot - under construction

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Laura: if you pick that CD up you will discover Robert Pete Williams and your life will never be the same.

So, now listening to: R. P. Williams, "Goodbye Slim Harpo"

(Haha R. P. Williams + R. V. Williams = ?)

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm...in a good way or a bad way, Amateurist?

Right now I've got some "Hits of the 40s" playing - to be followed by a Marty Robbins collection.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just playing un/mis-labeled minidisc roulette at this point. This one starts off with "13" era Teenage Fanclub b-sides. Hmm .

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 1 April 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

radiohead - hail to the theif (pee-you!)

Aw. I like it. I'm listening to it again, actually.

Nick how is the Futureshock?

I am listening to some free comp I got off breakbeat stuff, it's kinda proggy and PLEASANT but not fantastic, the Ils mix of Deep South by Layo and Bushwacka just about makes me want to beat down the rest of this annoying ethics essay and hit the inevitable "this is not a black and white issue now gimme my fucking pass 55 mark" conclusion so that I can jump in the car, leave this depressing 1984 hellhole university, get home eat dinner, shower, get changed, have some beer, go out, meet friends, go to club, see the hacker, dance, drink, go home, drink more, listen to records, talk, sleep, wake up and it's FRIDAY.

Wahey! Carry on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 3 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Box had a great run of video's earlier:

Andrew WK: We Want Fun
Girls Aloud: No Good Advice (great Blondie-esque song, 'til the awful spoken bit at the end)
Bones Thugs N Harmony: Home (haha look it's Phil Collins!)
Cheeky Girls: Take Your Shoes Off (greatest song ever recorded by robots, see NYLPM)

Then that Eminem song came on about singing for your supper or something, so I turned over and watched Grange Hill.

I'm listening to a 4AD sampler I borrowed from someone, and so far it's really bad across the board. I kind of feel sorry for him for liking this music.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey! *cries*

Then again it could also be down to the era of the label. What's the name of the sampler? If it's Lonely is an Eyesore, I fear we'll never agree. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Joyride, from 1997. (Ned, I can't believe you'd be the first to see this, or anyway, reply. I'm glad you don't take offense easily.)

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 5 April 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

>Joyride, from 1997<

What'n'who could be on a 1997 4AD sampler? I've nearly no idea, i have to admit. And AMG, as proved empirically a moment ago, 's no help on this either!
(Lonely is an Eyesore, however, did sound great once upon a time. Haven't listened to my vinyl for years, tho)

A few Styx songs (I now like "Grand Illusion" without reservation.)

Some of a compilation of 50s stuff (Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Lesley Gore, Beach Boys, etc). Most exciting moment was noticing a cool skip during the Shirelles' "Soldier Boy", recording, and manipulating on Reason.

Saw a couple songs from the Linkin Park concert on Much
