NYC ILXors - Oh, Why Not? Kentucky Derby, Any Interest?

I sent the following email out to a group of friends, but in flirtingposting with nickalicious, I figured what the hell, why not invite the ILXors I know? So if you're interested, email me. Or post here. Or tell me I'm insane. Or yell at me from a passing car. No obligation is necessary, but if you're interested, seriously let me know. Could be an awesome time, esp. if you wanna see my hometown and get drunklike horsies.

Howdy Y'all,

I know I've spoken with a few of you about my plan to rent a van and go to the Kentucky Derby this year. Thought it might be a good idea to send out an exploratory emailpost to people to see what interest's there. This isn't a call for reservations, nor does it require any kind of committment on your part except for an email (or post!) back saying "Yes, I'm interested." To recap, here's the idea:

I will rent a big-ass van to drive to Kentucky, probably seating somewhere between 12-15, comfortably. Everyone who wants to go will need to take Thursday, May 1 and Friday, May 2 off from work. No exceptions. The reason being is that I'd like to go to the Oaks on Friday, and if we don't get there until early Friday morning, we'd all be too tired. Anyway, the easiest thing to do will be to start driving Thursday morning, it will probably take 12-13 hours to drive to Louisville (depending on traffic, etc.). Everybody will pitch in on rental, gas, and toll costs - and people who have driver's licenses may be expected to drive a shift, depending on need. As it says below, the parents will be outta town, so everyone's welcome to crash at their pad - bring sleeping bags 'cause we've only got a few beds and couches. As my stepdad has pointed out, grandstand tickets for the Oaks are still available - however they're probably ridiculously expensive (note they're prolly sold out now!). I plan on going to both the Oaks and the Derby, and for the infield (general admission) that's $40 a day. No outside alcohol allowed in, but I think you can bring in food. Anyway, you can drink at the track. And gamble, of course. So all in all you'd need to budget for the following:

Transportation (rental, gas, tolls)
+ Food (during the trip, in L'ville, etc.)
+ Admission to the track ($40 each day)
+ Drinking money (good news! drinks are a lot cheaper in L'ville)
+ Gambling money (if that's your thing)

We'll drive back to NYC Sunday, hopefully leaving by at least 12 or so noontime. I'm sure we'll all be hungover, but we can all spend the van ride resting up for the inevitable Monday morning back-to-reality.

So yeah, everybody let me know what you think.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a long way off and I'm terrible with keeping plans but I am so in for this. I've been wanting to go to the Derby for so fucking long...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If that happens, the next logical step is invading Saratoga Springs for the Travers Stakes in August. And that's a good time of year to be there, actually.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I should add that my ultimate plan is to go to the entire Triple Crown this year.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

can you swing by and pick me up?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Then the Travers can be your dessert. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if you're along I-80, I-76 or I-71.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Ned that's a good idea as I've never been to Saratoga but have always wanted to go.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

my street is an offramp of I-80!!!!

YaY! ^_^

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

See, if you time it right, you get to catch a good concert or two at SPAC from the Philadelphia Orchestra plus maybe a reasonable miniarena band, the weather isn't TOO muggy and there's plenty of good food. Then get the hell out of town after the end of August. (I lived there three years, I should know.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"NYC ILXors" - :(

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, I only have to drive 45 minutes to get to LouEVIL.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not my van or my plan and I'll probably flake out by the time this rolls around, but lemme officially invite you, James!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Sigh. It's moments like this that make me wish I was still on the other side of the Atlantic. I've always wanted to go to the Kentucky Derby! (Are you gonna do the whole Triple Crown? I mean, at least Belmont is close...)

kate, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! I meant I-80 in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio only! Sorry!

Where you at James?

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

kate I'LL PAY FOR YOUR PLANE TICKET if you let me play "Box of Rain" by the Dead for you and convince you that it's the best song ever!

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

UUuuhhhh... yeah. That's a REAL incentive.

You have no idea how many people have tried to turn me on to the Dead. "Oh no, you have to be on drugs to appreciate the Dead" they tell me. I take drugs and listen to the Dead, it only enhances and PROLONGS the boredom to the point where I find listening to static on the radio more interesting (actually, radio static is pretty cool) than listening to them.

kate, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm serious kate - free plane ticket, roundtrip, London --> NYC. At the very least I'll make you a copy of the psych rock CDR I'm planning for jack cole with that song on it.

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, didn't read the thread very carefully. On an Upstate NY tip, Saratoga Springs = WAY COOL!!! One of the better upstate resort towns. The lake isn't as nice as Lake George, but the village is wonderful. Plus, racing and AAAAHHRT and SPAC.

You are joking, right? Free plane ticket, and all I have to do is listen to the Grateful Dead? You don't actually say anywhere that I have to LIKE them. Or in fact that I can't wear earplugs while listening to them... hrmmmm, if I didn't have a morbid fear of airplanes, I'd so be there!

kate, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

no you just have to let me try to convince you! Which may be part of the 13 hour van trip from NYC to Kentucky! ; )

hstencil, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Longtime goal of mine to sip a mint julep proper proper (in seersucker no less) so I'm definitely interested. Early May may be a problem for me timing-wise, but here's hoping.

Andy, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

13 hours in a van listening to the Grateful Dead? That is close to MY IDEA OF HELL!!! I'm really tempted, though, cause the rest of it sounds like fun.

kate, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Box of Rain"? How about "The Race Is On"? It's the Kentucky Derby!

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ohh I'm interested! Do I get to wear a flowered dress and a big hat?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmmm...not sure I can pass this one up....

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I meant to say I am interested and thanks for the very generous offer.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

We may need a caravan!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This sounds crazy. Count me in.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

We need a fuckin' TOUR BUS.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 6 March 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll pretend to like the grateful dead for a plane ticket!

minna (minna), Thursday, 6 March 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

whoa, yeah, count me in too. HOORAY FOR NEW FLEXIBLY SCHEDULED JOB woo hoo

maura (maura), Thursday, 6 March 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

mary hits the south twice in 3 weeks!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 6 March 2003 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

There's something bout the Southland in the Springtime, as it were.

"Box of Rain"? How about "The Race Is On"? It's the Kentucky Derby!

"Run For the Roses", surely. Not that anyone would want to listen to it.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 6 March 2003 07:13 (twenty-two years ago)

hah! wow!! i have plans for that particular weekend that were scheduled several months in advance, but i am envious of all you mothafuckaz who make it out there.

geeta (geeta), Thursday, 6 March 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

geeta is becoming the new maura

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 6 March 2003 07:41 (twenty-two years ago)

hell maybe i'll just stay there!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 6 March 2003 07:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Geezsh! WHY DID YOU NOT POST THIS WHEN I LIVED IN NYC????

THIS IS MY FREAKING DREAM WEEKEND - KENTUCKY DERBY. I TOLD DAVE GRUBBS ABOUT THIS IN 1985.

WHY IS IT NOW 2003 AND I HAVE STILL NOT MADE IT TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY.

ARE YOU SURE YOU CANNOT SWING BY SAN FRANCISCO.

HECK, I COULD EVEN MEET YOU IN OAKLAND.

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Thursday, 6 March 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Run For the Roses", surely. Not that anyone would want to listen to it.

Yeah, I wouldn't wanna listen to that either.

kate - 13 hours in a van (each way), but we're not going to listen to the Dead the whole time. That would really piss most of my friends off, too.

Thanks for the added interest - Matos, felicity, Mary, maura, JBR, Andy - now added to my list. We may have to rent 2 VANS!!! Word!

BurmaKitty - sorry, I can't drive out to the West Coast. Southwest flies to Louisville from Oakland, though tickets for that weekend might be sold out already. BTW I haven't seen Grubbs at Derby in some years now.

hstencil, Thursday, 6 March 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Will you be decadent and depraved? (please)

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 6 March 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I usually am.

hstencil, Thursday, 6 March 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Needless to say, I wanna be there too. Grr, grr!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't take off work because I have to take off most of a week in June for my cousin's wedding - maybe next time :(

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

there's always next year, Ally!

hstencil, Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we tailgate our van up to the fleet of jaguars? (Also: is 13 hours a bit optimistic? I don't know how fast you drive . . . )

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It took about 13 hours last time I drove it.

hstencil, Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool!

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
revive! Derby peeps, check yo' email.

hstencil, Thursday, 3 April 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Revive again! It's getting closer!

Okay so peeps, check this, I found out about some shows going on in Louisville:

Friday, May 1 - Freakwater, Sean Garrison & Five Finger Discount, Brokeback, Califone

Saturday, May 2 - Trans Am, Dalek, VHS Or Beta?, The Children

Hey nickalicious, are you gonna be able to come up from Lexington and hang out, or what?

hstencil, Monday, 21 April 2003 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw VHS or Beta at Knitting Factory. They were good. But enough about music. JBR, what are you gonna wear?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 21 April 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Live!

I *might* make it out for Saturday, pending school finals. Do the ladies have derby hats? Are you ready for mint juleps?

cprek (cprek), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

not a lady, no hat, but I'm ready for juleps!

I hope that I find another mesh hat at Unique thrift store like I did in '98. It was orange and said "Don't Ask Me, I Just Work Here."

If the weather's fine on Saturday, we'll prolly all be at the track. I wanna check out the Trans Am/VHS or Beta? show that night too.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

JBR, what are you gonna wear?

Mint leaves.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

*gasp*

Oh my God I think I might really get to do this! If the boy's momma's parents are home this weekend, it's as simple as drive up to LouEVIL, drop him off at their crib (right off Bardstown Rd. like 50 yards from Electric Ladyland), and VOILA!

I didn't know about the VHS-Or-Beta/Trans Am show at all, that sounds AWESOME!

*now full of anxiety cuz it would SUCK to not be able to hit this thing up*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

DUDE YOUR BABY'S MOMMA's PARENTS LIVE IN MY HOOD!

you know you got a place to stay, bro.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious we must arrange. check your email.

cprek (cprek), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my god can we go thrifting in Louisville? Stencil, do your parents have a DVD player? I can bring entertainment.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

no DVD, but I'm bringing my laptop which has a DVD player we can hook up to their TV.

There is amazing thrifting in Louisville. I figure Friday will be the best day for that.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

By "entertainment" you mean "p0rn", right Mary?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

If not, we can always peep the selection at Blue Movies, 3rd and Market.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that it has anything to do with this but my roommate and I decided a couple nights ago that we're going to go to NYC this summer. Probably around the time of that $2000 Radiohead festival thing. I probably won't attend the festival but I'll be along for the trip. Maybe we can meet at that place with the salads and rums and stuff again.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Thrifting? :( :(

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought you didn't have any money anyway, rosemary.

(there might still be room in the minivan.)

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I know this trip just gets better and better.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

well if rosemary's coming, she's going to have to sit on someone's lap.

hstencil, Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

blue movies has moved. still on market, but a few streets further...left? it's on floyd or something now. bigger facility, much more dirtiness.

louisville lenny, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

damn! I have such fond memories of visiting there in high school.

(who are you louisville lenny?)

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't go anyway, I have plans.

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

NO! My band is in a (retarded) Battle of the Bands thing, and if we do well on Thursday, we have to come back again and play on SATURDAY NIGHT!!!! NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

*possibly throwing the gig Thursday night by smoking cigarettes and drinking whiskey and forgetting as many lyrics as possible and flubbing notes and falling off the stage and whatnot*

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

well, what are you doing Friday night then, nick? We can go shoot bottle rockets at the Barnstable party!

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Every holiday is a bottle-rocket holiday, even if it's not a holiday!

(we may be playing Friday night instead of Saturday, or neither night at all...unfortunately we won't know until Thursday night after the scores are tallied)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

newsflash: Empire Maker, the favorite, injured!

April 30, 2003
Empire Maker Is Injured; Kafwain Is Scratched
By JOE DRAPE

LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 29 - For days, horseplayers have been looking for the tiniest bit of vulnerability in the Kentucky Derby favorite, Empire Maker, the impeccably bred and seemingly invincible Florida Derby winner. They found it today when his trainer, Bobby Frankel, acknowledged that the colt had bruised a heel in his right front foot in his last victory, in the Wood Memorial, and that he had sought veterinary attention for the ailment early this morning.

That revelation, as well as Bob Baffert's decision to scratch Kafwain when the big colt turned up lame after today's workout, has transformed Saturday's Derby into a legitimate up-for-grabs race - and a far more interesting race to wager on - rather than the first step to the Triple Crown that Frankel; his jockey Jerry Bailey; and much of the betting public had projected for Empire Maker.

Even more intriguing was that Frankel was initially reluctant to disclose the ailment, not mentioning it in a nearly 45-minute news conference this morning at his barn. Later, however, he released a statement about Empire Maker's condition to Churchill Downs, acknowledging that his veterinarian, Dr. Ken Reed, examined Empire Maker after the colt's one-mile jog around the track. Reed said that the colt had sustained the bruise in the Wood Memorial on April 12 at Aqueduct.

"My vet doesn't think it's a real problem," Frankel said. "In fact, if this wasn't the Kentucky Derby and all the attention that goes with that, this would never be an issue. He recommended I walk him another day. He thinks that will take care of it. It's because of a bruise he suffered in his last race.

"They said the track was a little hard this morning and it might have affected him. But I really think he's going to be O.K. You can never be 100 percent sure in this business, but I'd say I'm 98 percent sure he'll be all right. But it's the Derby, you know, so what are you going to do?"

Heavy favorites have been snakebitten in America's most famous race in recent years. Only one post-time favorite in the past 23 years, Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000, has won the race. In 1992, A. P. Indy was scratched the morning of the race when the trainer Neil Drysdale discovered the colt had a hoof injury. A. P. Indy returned to win the Belmont Stakes, the Breeders' Cup Classic and the title of Horse of the Year.

It looks as if the 129th running of the Derby will feature a field of 16 after today's post-position draw, a number that dwindled after Baffert scratched Kafwain not long after the colt finished a five-furlong workout in company with his stablemate Indian Express. The twosome worked in an identical time of 59{+3}/{-5} seconds, but Kafwain appeared to labor to keep up with the less accomplished Indian Express.

"He's out," Baffert said. "He didn't cool out well, and we started to look at what happened. We don't know exactly what's wrong, but it looks like a check ligament in his right front. We'll have him X-rayed to find out."

Empire Maker, who had won three stakes races and more than $715,000, became the second setback for Baffert, who earlier in the year had to take last year's undefeated 2-year-old champion, Vindication, off the Triple Crown trail because of injury. Still, Baffert, who has won three of the last six Derbys, was buoyed by the progression of Indian Express. "That was his best work ever," he said. "I'm getting kind of excited about him. He was in front the whole way, but that's his style. He looked good out there."

Still, Baffert acknowledged that Indian Express, a Utah-bred colt who began his racing career in Panama, remains a long shot. He has yet to win a stakes race and has had only four starts. The last horse to win the Derby off such limited experience was Exterminator in 1918.

"He's improved a lot since we first got him, and this work showed me he's improved since the Santa Anita Derby," Baffert said of Indian Express's narrow second-place finish. "I like what I see in him, and I feel good about leading him up there. He's only got one style, so we'll send him to the front and he'll go as far as he can."

In New York today, the trainer Barclay Tagg was also pleased after Funny Cide turned in a sharp 59{+2}/{-5}-second workout at Belmont Park. Funny Cide, a New York-bred gelding, finished second by a half-length to Empire Maker in the Wood and will be flown here on Wednesday (Wednesday). "He went just perfectly," Tagg said. "It really was a perfect work for him. I'm satisfied he's ready."

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I just scored some free grandstand tickets! Sadly, I don't have much money for the ponies... :(

If I don't see anyone at the races, I might see you at the Trans Am show afterwards. I will be the tall guy wearing a NASA hat. The tall guy standing next to me rapping will probably be Nickalicious.

cprek (cprek), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

no shit, you got grandstands? How much, a box? I haven't sat in the grandstand at Derby since I was 12...

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's a box. My gf's boss has some crazy connections and gave us two tickets.

cprek (cprek), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

goddamn, that's awesome. Us riff-raff will be in the infield, envying you.

Now that I think about it, tho, my stepdad might have free shareholder passes. I hope he remembered to leave 'em on the kitchen table.

hstencil, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

riff-raff? The infield is very lively, and you can get as blitzed as you want. I'll have to watch my drinking in case I'm sitting next to Shatner or something.

cprek (cprek), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Aight, I'm leaving soon... I'm already anticipating disaster. But hopefully everything leading up to that will be fun.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Sitting next to Shatner = you are REQUIRED to get row-row-rowdy drunk and...

A) puke on him, or
B) turn to him and say "Damnit Jim I'm a doctor not a miracle worker!" for no reason whatsoever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus the infield always devolves into a slammed sunburnt session of "show your tits!", how can you go wrong there?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 1 May 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The ponies:

No. - Horse - Trainer - Jockey - Odds
1 - Supah Blitz - Manny Tortora - Rosemary Homeister - 50-1
2 - Brancusi - Patrick Biancone - Tony Farina - 30-1
3 - Sir Cherokee - Mike Tomlinson - Terry Thompson - 15-1
4 - Atswhatimtalknbout - Ron Ellis - David Flores - 12-1
5 - Peace Rules - Bobby Frankel - Edgar Prado - 8-1
6 - Funny Cide - Barclay Tagg - Jose Santos - 15-1
7 - Offlee Wild - Tom Smith - Robby Albarado - 30-1
8 - Buddy Gil - Jeff Mullins - Gary Stevens - 8-1
9 - Indian Express - Bob Baffert - Tyler Baze - 12-1
10 - Lone Star Sky - Tom Amoss - Shane Sellers - 50-1
11 - Domestic Dispute - Patrick Gallagher - Alex Solis - 30-1
12 - Empire Maker - Bobby Frankel - Jerry Bailey - 6-5
13 - Eye of the Tiger - Jerry Hollendorfer - Eibar Coa - 50-1
14 - Ten Cents a Shine - D. Wayne - Lukas Calvin Borel - 50-1
15 - Outta Here - Bill Currin - Kent Desormeaux - 50-1
16 - Ten Most Wanted - Wally Dollase - Pat Day - 6-1
17 - Scrimshaw - D. Wayne - Lukas Cornelio Velasquez - 15-1

I think I"m going with an exacta. Peace Rules for the win, and Empire Maker for place. Both Frankel horses. And I like the political irony.

cprek (cprek), Thursday, 1 May 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 3 May 2003 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm flipflopping between Ten Most Wanted and Buddy Gil

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 3 May 2003 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I may go down to William Hill and see if I can put a fiver on and join the fun. I like the odds on peace rules if I can get them. (I have no idea what I am talking about).

Ed (dali), Saturday, 3 May 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

AAARGH - thank god I didn't put any money on this.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 3 May 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Why you have to give me that...FUNNY CIDE!?!?!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 3 May 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny Cide? Is that like when someone kills the funny?

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 4 May 2003 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos won $55 on a $4 win bet on Funny Cide.

hstencil (Mary), Sunday, 4 May 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

and he has the new Luomo - whatta fucker

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 4 May 2003 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what do you get for the Matos who has everything?

hstencil (Mary), Sunday, 4 May 2003 06:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"Something for the Matos who has eve-ry-THIIIIIING..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 4 May 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I won $15 in the office randomly-select-a-horse-out-of-a-hat pool. Whoopee!

Let me just say something if I may: I'm totally pissed that I didn't get to get up there and meet up with you guys! Like, GRRR, when will I have an opportunity like this again? Argh.

I guess, what with my band winning an assload of money & free studio time in Atlanta with a performance that we knew to have been awful but everyone else said rocked, that might make up for it a little, but shit I WANTED TO BE THERE!

(I think Cprek did get those box tickets, cuz whoever did his radio show yesterday...HOO-BOY WHAT THE FACK!?!)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 4 May 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulations, nickalicious.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 4 May 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So my pick of Fashion Girl to win place & show did me wrong. (I think she came in last.) I was gonna *vote* for Dedication and Sentimental Value but we didn't make it to the front of the line in time. Then I had a boxed exacta on With Anticpation and Perfect Drift but only one of them placed so I was f*cked. My Derby pick was the highly researched trifecta of Ten Most Wanted, Empire Maker and Atswhatimtalknbout. I also threw some $ on Ten Cents a Shine cause the jockey silks looked like a nice red and white cheerleading uniform (Bring it On). I bet on Tradtional in the 12th race but we didn't stay for that one. I wonder if I won?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 5 May 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

But did you wear a hat?

bnw (bnw), Monday, 5 May 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Even better: I wore a visor! The mint juleps were delicious, the thrifting was top notch, the record stores were incredible, hstencil's house was awesome; Louisville, KY: America's best kept secret.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 5 May 2003 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I wore a hat, a big-brimmed straw one, to keep the sun off me. I also wore a long-sleeved shirt w/vertical stripes for the same reason. I was successful. As noted earlier, I also won $55.20 for my $4 win bet on Funny Cide--12-1 odds, how about that. It was one of five I made, four $4 bets on wins for the Derby itself--my secret was picking horses based entirely on which jockey silks I found most aesthetically appealing--and one a $5 on no. 5 to win race 8; the woman in front of me tipped me off to that one, she was going up to collect on her second consecutive win, so I trusted her. But winning on the Big Race Itself (esp. on a NYC horse!) was a great feeling, without doubt; spent most of it that night on the dinner check. (GREAT BBQ!!!) Also, the record shops (in particular ear X-tacy, despite its lousy name) are k-frickin'-excellent. Louisville yes!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and THANK YOU HSTENCIL'S MOM AND DAD!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 5 May 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah, I lost too. Oh well. Didn't see anyone at the Trans Am show. Didja go?

cprek (cprek), Monday, 5 May 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos, JBR and I went, while the others stayed home and watched St. Elmo's Fire. Sorry we missed you, cprek (I was the drunk dude in the bright orange shirt and white jeans).

I hopefully will post some pics from the trip later today...

hstencil, Monday, 5 May 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

So are you coming up to this hell hole we call Toronto or not you people? We need more slaves for our sulfur mines. I mean people to drink with now that all our friends are dead of SARS and West Nile.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 5 May 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i want pics!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 5 May 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry I missed Rob Lowe's mullet, let alone the Kentucky Derby.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 5 May 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone in the basement room with a needle & a spoon?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 5 May 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

huh?

hstencil, Monday, 5 May 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a swell time. I'm really glad I went, even if I got sick on the last day (no, not a hangover, a yucky throat infection).

The Derby was great, but for me this trip was all about CHEAP USED VINYL. I came home with a couple dozen records. I'm sure I'll write about my big score in greater detail later on. Right now I have to attend to my throat.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 5 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Rekkid shopping in Louisville = AMAZING. I'm glad someone else can finally back me up on this.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 5 May 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a line from the Stones' "Dead Flowers." Which also has the line, "Making bets on Kentucky Derby day." In my monkey brane the reference was obvious.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 5 May 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

oh right, forgot about that song. Bought Let It Bleed in a truck stop for $10 on the way down.

hstencil, Monday, 5 May 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, Sticky Fingers WAS played on this trip. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 5 May 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 5 May 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

BEST GODDAMN SERIES OF PHOTOS ON ILX EVER! I am now in for next year beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, looks like a great time. Nice mint juleps, everyone!

felicity (felicity), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think JBR's solo shot is the coolest of the cool. "I'm from New York, I'm drinking, and I'm wearing black, so screw ya if you complain."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

What a wonderful series of images! "Note: Lezzing up!" = CLASSIC DERBY INFIELD MOMENT LIKE NONE OTHAH

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 5 May 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 5 May 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

don't sweat it, Sean. When I get the chance, I'll just re-size 'em and re-upload 'em.

hstencil, Monday, 5 May 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how you are all posing in the same spot for your individual shots. Are you sure that just wasn't a backdrop at KMart or something?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 5 May 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

No way, dude. I've got the losing tickets to prove I was there, plus two bottles of limited edition Woodford Reserve Kentucky Derby 2003 bourbon (sold only in Kentucky).

"Racing stewards at Churchill Downs are investigating whether jockey Jose Santos was carrying a prohibited item in his right hand when he rode 12-1 long shot Funny Cide to a dramatic victory in the May 3 Kentucky Derby."

http://www.courier-journal.com/localnews/2003/05/11ky/wir-front-derby0511-10966.html

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 11 May 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this is such bullshit and I hope Joel, Mary and Matos weigh in on this I think its that Frankel guy (trainer of empire maker) who is being a sour puss I mean why is this coming out now?

Eve, Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

heh heh, Matos should give back the money!

hstencil, Sunday, 11 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"electrical devices that might make the horse run faster"? like what, a remote control for super-speedy auto-horseshoes?

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 12 May 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, Matos, you never saw A View to a Kill? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a nice brown T at Urban Outfitters that says I *heart* [70s style sketch of horse]. It is cute. Maybe I should get it and wear it to Belmont. But it is a little tight and the fabric is thin.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

you could wear a jacket over it? a brown jacket

gareth (gareth), Monday, 12 May 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yea a jacket: maybe a light blue adidas zip up? taking it back retro style? can i ask, since we're talking about urban outfitters and jackets, i got this one, it is pink, it has a crest on it:) the crest says manchester badminton, there is a sketch of a person with a racquet in the crest, all good, but the back takes the conceit a bit too far, it says manchester england 1927 badminton team or something. so i got that one but then i get home i had meant to get medium but somehow brought home large. but then there was another one, it is white, and with green stitching has two ping pong paddles overlapping, and then the back says just tokyo, much simpler, but no crest:( do you think it is a sign, should i take the pink one and exchange for the white? do i want to pimp manchester badminton or tokyo ping pong?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it is very difficult, i think the lack of crest is the deciding factor.

it is a pity that they have run out of Tottenham Swan tops already

now, ilxes own dave boyle has been know to sport a st pauli top, which is quite nice. actually we are into the territory of one of your other threads now arent we, i'll see you over there!

gareth (gareth), Monday, 12 May 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Santos has been cleared, Matos can rejoice that he and Mike Bloomberg now have something in common:

A Kentucky Derby for New York
So a New York horse finally wins the Derby, and wouldn't you know it, a week later there's an official inquiry. We needed that, just the ticket to take the swelling out of a little sorely needed state pride? A news photo and an article last week in The Miami Herald questioned whether Jose Santos, the jockey who rode Funny Cide to a surprise triumph on May 3, used an illegal gadget to win the race. The photo seemed to show something besides a crop in Mr. Santos's right hand, perhaps even an illicit "battery" device to shock the horse across the finish line. As the story took hold over the weekend, you could almost hear the harrumphs and the tut-tuts from the mint julep crowd, which had barely considered the New York team in the running.

But after a thorough inquiry, the Kentucky Racing Commission has found no wrongdoing by Mr. Santos. The commission studied stacks of photos and videos. Officials examined the track and the turf to make sure nothing was dropped as the horse appeared before the 150,000 Derby spectators. And commissioners decided that Mr. Santos could not have held anything extra while he was also flipping his crop from one hand to another on a horse galloping at 35 miles an hour. So for the second time around, they stamped it an official win for Mr. Santos and Funny Cide, restoring New York State's unfamiliar pleasure in having Derby bragging rights.

The New York Legislature, burdened by a depressing budget process these days, paused yesterday to praise Mr. Santos, the breeders and the owners of New York's famous gelding. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has his own fiscal problems, revealed that he had discovered an unexpected revenue source when he bet on the hometown favorite, who left the post with 12-1 odds and earned the mayor $600. For some, questions may linger about the 2003 Kentucky Derby, but New Yorkers are used to the idea that very little good comes without a tinge of controversy. This was and is a delicious victory at a time when we can all certainly use it.

hstencil, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

:-P

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloomberg only put $50 down? Jeez..

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

since we're talking about urban outfitters and jackets, i got this one, it is pink, it has a crest on it:) the crest says manchester badminton, there is a sketch of a person with a racquet in the crest, all good, but the back takes the conceit a bit too far, it says manchester england 1927 badminton team or something.

Mary, did you see the grey polo one? Yeah, I bought that one.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloomberg only put $50 down? Jeez..

The reason he's a bazillionaire is because he's a cheapskate.

Uh, not really.

hstencil, Tuesday, 13 May 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, what's the gray polo one? Explain!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 13 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The Preakness Stakes

1. Cherokee's Boy 15-1
2. a-Scrimshaw 5-1
3. Foufa's Warrior 20-1
4. Kissin Saint 20-1
5. Ten Cents a Shine 15-1
6. Midway Road 20-1
7. Peace Rules 8-5
8. New York Hero 20-1
9. Funny Cide 7-5
10. a-Senior Swinger 5-1

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 15 May 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary, it's just like your one and the white Tokyo one, but it was a grey color and said something on it about Faulklands Polo Club (I think it was polo, have to check). I bought it several weeks ago at the Urban Outfitters on 72nd/Broadway, they had millions of them. felicity has seen it on me, at soccer.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 15 May 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Faulklands Polo Club ahhhhhhhhhh. They don't have that one yet at 2nd ave.

So, who is everyone gonna bet on in the Preakness? What happened to Empire Maker? Who is New York Hero? And is the fashionably late Funny Cide businesss going to work this time?

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 15 May 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to Baltimore tomorrow. I'm prolly betting on FC and PR. Empire Maker scratched because of the foot problem, I think.

hstencil, Thursday, 15 May 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Post time coming right up... Funny Cide is the favorite. Anyone watching?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, did you see that??? Jose Santos is my nu-god.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hstencil, I hope you had a LOT of money on that one.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

He only went off at 3-1 tho, right?

Still, awesome victory.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

FC's big finish was so dramatic -- after the first minute or so (which was a pretty damn tight race), there was just no question that FC had the Preakness locked up. I love how Santos opened his hands at the end to let everyone know there was nothing in there but his whip.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

FC wins again?! shit, I should've put money on it (again)!

M Matos (M Matos), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The payout wasn't quite so big this time... but still!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 May 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

AH, I see he went off at 9-5; yeah not so good odds there.

But damn, he was dominating! the Belmont should be great!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Should we have a Belmont FAP? (I started a new thread.)

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 17 May 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Funny Cide! (I took a nap and missed it.) Can he win the Triple Crown?

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 May 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Got a call from Hstencil earlier--he placed an exacta on the race and won $600 on a $20 bet!!!!!

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 18 May 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

wow -- so those exactas can pay off -- congrats! i didn't make it to an otb -- so am saving all my love for belmont

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 18 May 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Joel called me from Baltimore yesterday and did very well in the $$ department. I wish I could have gone. I am so annoyed I have field day festival tickets and so I don't think I can go to belmont but if FC wins I will be So mad to have missed triple crown history but I guess being there for one leg of it is cool.
The race was awesome I could tell right before the last turn FC was going to win you could see that Jose Santos really was trying to hold him back and he just took off.

take that bob frankel!

I totally have the racing bug.

I really want FC to win the triple crown because I don't think jose's kids can deal with it if he loses.

SO i will havr to give joel money or something for the belmont.

Eve, Sunday, 18 May 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Eve, I'm jealous yr going to Field Day! (and more jealous of stence. but he deserves it.)

That Girl (thatgirl), Sunday, 18 May 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah its good timing for him. I *Still* have not written as much as I should for the eminem paper I SUCL argh.

Eve, Sunday, 18 May 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I hit the exacta for $10 ($20 box), it paid off $603 plus I had other bets (Funny Cide across the board for $5, Midway Road to Show, Scrimshaw across the board) for a grand total of $630. Fuck yeah.

hstencil, Monday, 19 May 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Congratulations, Stence! You did good.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 May 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Paint It, Paisley (kate), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

so who do you guys like to win this thing? I was leaning Barbaro but it's looking more and more like people are abandoning ship on Brother Derek .... afraid Barbaro might inherit the lukewarm favorite's role, and in that case the unorthodox campaign (he might be better on grass! 5 weeks rest!) becomes more of a neg ...

Renard (Renard), Thursday, 4 May 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

my grandparents in Louisville had these great drinking glasses embossed w/pictures of every Derby winner through the mid 60s or so. Man O'War was always my favorite.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Thursday, 4 May 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

LAWYER RON

hey dummy, man o' war NEVER won the derby

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 4 May 2006 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a bet where you pick the first 3 horses in any order?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 May 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

you could box a trifecta

I think Lawyer Ron might be too headstrong, he really wants to run early and the pace is gonna be insane ....

Renard (Renard), Thursday, 4 May 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

first post is 11 am btw

Renard (Renard), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 4 May 2006 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Is anybody still going to Commonwealth? I think I'll be there.

snumbers (snumbers), Friday, 5 May 2006 12:58 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. Commonwealth will be open by 2, but as I don't need four hours of julep-drinking, I'm shooting for 3-3:30.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 5 May 2006 13:03 (nineteen years ago)

I'll be in seersucker hanging out with a dorky asian guy. Holler!

snumbers (snumbers), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

I might be wearing my WFMU ESCUCHA! tee.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 5 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

Okay, I should be there. 3-3.30 sounds good as I'm currently VERY BUSY watching Battlestar Galactica.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

cool. btw it's ESCUCHE! (my tenses are rusty)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:56 (nineteen years ago)

Laurel and I didn't see anyone in seersucker.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

I was there flirting with all the girls in pretty dresses and playing with the dogs. Maybe next time? We'll all have to wear yellow roses (or just meet somewhere less crowded).

snumbers (snumbers), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 11:41 (nineteen years ago)

OTB across the street closed, so have to plan sidetrip -- who to bet on?

Aerosol, Friday, 6 May 2011 16:34 (fourteen years ago)

I'm going! Don't know what time I'll appear, exactly, cos after Cwealth my day is gonna keep going until 1-2am so I might not want to start rly early, but I do want to get some space on the patio...hmm.

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Friday, 6 May 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

I liked Archarcharch aiight before he got post 1

mookieproof, Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 7 May 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

Okay my second attempt at waking up today went much better than the first one. Fully conscious now. Definitely won't be earlier than that, VP!

resistance does not require a firearm (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:15 (fourteen years ago)

the original derby road trip that prompted this thread was a total blast and all subsequent derbies have made me nostalgic. would be up for doing it again next year.

michael nyman the composer guy (man) (dude) (get bent), Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:26 (fourteen years ago)

michael nyman the composer guy (man) (dude) (get bent), Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:31 (fourteen years ago)

tehresa, Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

my photos of bill ripping up his betting tickets in anger post-race have a special place in my heart

tehresa, Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

He's really mellowed now and just stoically accepted his defeat.

Virginia Plain, Sunday, 8 May 2011 14:56 (fourteen years ago)

I bet Mucho Macho Man to win, got 3rd. As Derbies go I've certainly been more wrong about it than that.

Was stuck at work until late then went to Cake Shop to see a band and do tequila shots.

Band from stage: Did Pants On Fire win the Derby?
Me: NO
Band: Who won?
Me: ANIMAL KINGDOM
Band: Boring!

Replay is here if anyone missed it

i am lost without uncle mo tbh

I went to Aqueduct and witnessed his unraveling in the Wood Memorial in person, lol. what a mess.

the original derby road trip that prompted this thread was a total blast

I went 8 times starting in the mid-'90s but the last one was in 2003 (Funny Cide). gonna try really hard to go next year.

dmr, Sunday, 8 May 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

didn't like Animal Kingdom because he had never run on dirt before (only turf and synthetic). guess he likes dirt!

dmr, Sunday, 8 May 2011 20:52 (fourteen years ago)

funny cide was a new york horse! (i was hoping stay thirsty would have a shot this year, being from queens stock.)

michael nyman the composer guy (man) (dude) (get bent), Sunday, 8 May 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)

is it just me or do racehorse names sound like rockband names?

backlash stan straw man fan (m coleman), Monday, 9 May 2011 00:28 (fourteen years ago)

yep Funny Cide was a New York-bred, even (from an N.Y. farm ... majority of top racehorses are bred in Kentucky)

dmr, Monday, 9 May 2011 01:44 (fourteen years ago)

is it just me or do racehorse names sound like rockband names?

sometimes all the horses for one owner are named around a theme, my friend has this idea that if he ever hit the lottery he'd name all his racehorses for Fall songs

and container driver is taking over with a late surge!! out of the pack, heeeere coooomes kicker conspiracy!

dmr, Monday, 9 May 2011 02:41 (fourteen years ago)

has nastan0vich named any horses?

mookieproof, Monday, 9 May 2011 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

not sure. I think so maybe?

dmr, Monday, 9 May 2011 11:45 (fourteen years ago)

Why did all the men at Commenwealth dressed in Derby fashion look so nice? A straw hat is all it takes?

Virginia Plain, Monday, 9 May 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

Because most dudes' standards for dress are so low that we're easily impressed? Because seersucker never hurts?

Back up the lesbian canoe (Laurel), Monday, 9 May 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

Ha, Laurel OTM as always. Also, maybe throw in a little gayness for good measure.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 9 May 2011 20:41 (fourteen years ago)

some of us stuck with our standard slob look.

resistance does not require a firearm (Dr Morbius), Monday, 9 May 2011 20:44 (fourteen years ago)

forgot to wear my seersucker shorts. would have been a little chilly after dark anyhow. maybe for Preakness.

dmr, Monday, 9 May 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

drove past saratoga track last week. i totally wanna go to a race there at some point! our timing has never been right.
preakness is so close! wish i had more time/money. i read about some unlimited beer infield craziness but tbh it seems scary.

tehresa, Monday, 9 May 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

yeah don't do the infield you won't even see a horse. go into the grandstand if you're gonna go. if tickets are gone you can scalp really easily.

saratoga's pretty awesome. total opposite of the derby. just super chill, nice town, and the racing is great every day. only been once, I wanna go back.

dmr, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 02:35 (fourteen years ago)

p much every summer i discuss plans tryna get up to saratoga (also have only been once)

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

this is the official preakness mascot for this year btw. not a joke. behold kegasus:

http://thedailyrecord.com/files/2011/03/kegasus.jpg

so if you want to hang out w/ centaur kenny powers I guess go to the infield?

dmr, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 02:37 (fourteen years ago)

saratoga's pretty awesome. total opposite of the derby.

not that the derby is not awesome. they are both awesome in opposite ways.

dmr, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 02:39 (fourteen years ago)

omg centaur powers!!

"If the goal is to let them know they will be able to drink to excess, it does communicate that," he said. "If there's confusion about whether they'll be able to pursue sunstroke and alcohol poisoning, seeing this, it's clear indication that yes, they will."

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

we've now been to toga twice (family drop-ins) during non-race time. hopefully this summer?

tehresa, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 02:51 (fourteen years ago)

seven years pass...

disqualification! when did that last happen??

you knew

The Kentuky Derby decision was not a good one. It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a beautiful thing to watch. Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur. The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby - not even close!
