Do you hate people who share your first name?

I just realised after a post on ILM that I have an irrational hatred of people who share my first name. Anyone named "Kate" - I just hate them and feel like they have no right to the name, it is mine, I am the only Kate there is, and no others should be allowed, they should have to be assigned letters or numbers to distinguish them from me, the ONE TRUE KATE.

This is especially true for celebrities, as noted, I LOATHE Kate Radley and that actress Kate whose name I've blotted from memory.

But somehow, Katie's are excused from my wrath, as the diminutive form of the name already clearly distinguishes them from me.

Obviously, there are multiple Nicks and Marks on this board, and there is still confusion, despite some of the most prominent posters having those names.

How do you react when you meet people who share yer name? Do you embrace them as a member of some cosmic family, or do you shun them like the scurvy dogs they are for daring to intrude upon your good pure name?

kate, Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

very few people share my first name. I find them a source of some fascination.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yet to meet anyone with mine!

jeanne picot (jeanne picot), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Most people with mine settle for "Dan". Good.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Subquestion: how do you feel about people who try to diminutise your name? Daniel, will you not settle for people calling you Dan? I refuse to answer to "Katie". It is not my name, and the use of it is ruthlessly discouraged.

kate, Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

there are loads of us Chrisses, it's not a problem.

chris (chris), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I ph34r them entering my circle of friends as then there would be a fight over which of us gets to be the Alpha Emma. Also many female slebz called Emma are not great eg Emma Thompson, Emma B the rub Radio 1 DJ / rub tits out type 'actress' etc.

So basically yeah, all other Emmas should be eradicated.

(I like Em or Ems too. But not Emmy. yuck. cue all chums now calling me that always)

Emma, Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have an irrational FEAR of the marianna from the sinister list.

marianna, Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never met an evil Steve, some of us might be pretentious fucks but generally we ok - and its a good name for bastardising i.e. Steve-O, Sven, Sevvy...

my gf is a kate altho she seems to prefer katie as well, i'm not keen as it just sounds more 'infantile' - like Stevie is a bit lame, if you hate fun

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Do not fear the sinister Marianna - she's lovely! And has only posted here once, so you're safe anyway.

I don't mind other Elizabeths, although other Lizzes in my immediate circle would be a tad confusing. On my floor in the first year of university there were: 2 Elizabeths, 2 Rebeccas, 2 Rosies, 1 Anna + 1 Hannah. Somewhat trying but amusing. I really really hated the guts of a Lizzy in my year at school though, which may explain my antipathy to being called that now, apart from by my mad uncle the vicar.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

All other Colins are wankers.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Does that include Colin the daschshund from the Rotten Borough of Dunny on the Wold, who voted Baldrick into Parliament?

Fred Nerk, Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't mind jims because i'm not really a jim

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 3 April 2003 09:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Michaelangelo" is actually a compound--on my ID it's Michael Angelo. (looks good in print, I'm a writer, why not?) generally people call me Michaelangelo, Michael, or Matos. And yes, I HATE being called "Mike"--I recently cured my roommate of the habit, happily enough. No, I do not have an irrational distrust of people w/my name/s. I have an irrational distrust of people who do my job. I immediately get defensive and suspicious of other music critics, especially ones who write about dance music, unless I'm already a huge fan of their work. It's endemic to the trade, I think, and I wish I were above it, but it still happens sometimes.

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I also hate other people called Joe. But then again I hate nearly everyone

j0e (j0e), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jim, the good news is that not being a real Jim needn't stop you from opening a franchise like 'Jim's Advanced Brain Surgery' or 'Jim's World Peace Negotiations'. Neither would any other pedantic considerations, like for instance lack of qualifications or aptitude.

Fred Nerk, Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

don't know any Ronans, it wouldn't be a problem I guess cos I am perpetually fitzy to mates anyway.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I like all the Rachels I have met, I think. Sometimes when I write of say my name a lot, it starts to seem really weird, so at those times it's quite nice to be able to switch on Friends or something and hear it bandied about quite normally.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I was surrounded by other Marks all through childhood. It was as if parents naming their sons in 1970-71 had a collective imagination failure and opted for Mark (and it seemed, Matthew and Martin) en masse. So there were two problems; being surrounded by ppl w/ the same name as me, AND having loads of ppl with other "Ma" names which I would often be called in error.

Then uni - and relief! No Marks on my course at all! It was Bristol Uni, tho, so plenty of Tarquins ;). My relief was short-lived as *all four* demonstrators on the Plant Sciences practical course were called Mark. One of them, however, for some unspecified reason preferred to be known as Blotbag.

Liz is correct; sinister Marainna *is* lovely. ILx Marianna has nothing to ph34r.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If I went around getting all angsty every time I met someone with my name, I'd have been one of the founding members of Linkin Park, I'm sure.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha Blotbag.

I referred to Sinister Marianna in an email as 'Marianna M.' once, and when i read it back I couldn't work out why I'd got her last initial wrong as I know perfectly well it is L. But now it occurs to me that ILX Marianna may have been insinuating herself into my thoughts...

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

God that Coastaltown dude is a cunt.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The all new peteb on ILx has confused me a touch - and confused the pinefox even more. I don't mind other Pete's as long as they realise I am the one true Pete. This sanguine attitude probably comes from having a father with the same name as me.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

We should be calling you 'Junior' then.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr Norton means people know how to spell my name right.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

There aint that many famous Paulines and those that are are not famous for being attractive, are they? The 2 I've actually know I've hated but just coz they were evil and nasty, not coz of their name, honest...

smee (smee), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean, the other Pete B ISN'T you? Man, am I confused, then. See, that is the sort of thing scares me. What if someone called, like Kate St.John or Kate St.Hubbins started posting here!

kate, Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:55 (twenty-two years ago)

it's ok, Pete, i'm pete, like that, see?

I've always vaguely thought Peter was a very common name, but, I don't know anyone else who has it. I think I like my name more because of this. If I met some other Pete(r) I think I'd get pretty protective.

(sub-question: full-names vs. diminuitives. personally i don't see why anyone called Peter wouldn't want to be called Pete...)

pete b. (pete b.), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!! I'M SEEING DOUBLE!!!

kate, Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate StJohn

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 April 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad's called Peter and nobody has ever called him Pete to my knowledge, I'm gonna check next time we speak though...

smee (smee), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(I actually know about Kate St.John - I was frequently mistaken for her on, like Spiritualized newsgroups and the like. Yeah, I hate HER, too. She is the imposter. I am the REAL Kate the Saint.)

kate, Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i am not shallow enough to judge people on their names alone. my father and i have the same name, and although i hate him, i don't think thats the reason.

thuddd (thuddd), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I like all the other Nicks on ILX, so I don't really worry about it here, though I wish I had picked a more unique name at the beginning. In real life, I meet surprisingly few Nicks, though this may be due to my dismal social life. In middle school, when a new Nick moved to my school, everyone called him Nicholas to distinguish, and I think he hated me because of it. Tough shit. You snooze, you lose.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I like all the other Marks on ILx. And I don't think there's any danger of ppl confusing me with them.

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know many people who share my first name, apart from a pop star, a former Queen and some heiress or other but since these people are not in my immediate circle of friends it doesn't bother me too much. What *does* bother me is having my name shortened or otherwise mucked about with. I hate that.

C J (C J), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I've just figured out your name, CJ. I like it, do you not use it out of a desire for privacy?

I think the Nicks on ILX have made Nick a favourite name of mine. Nick Dasto0r is the malignant force among them, the exception etc.

The other Marks rox0r too, though I agree with MarkH about the early 1970s and our name. My mum blames it on Captain Mark Phillips. When I was living in Italy, I was out with 6 other people for dinner one night, and all 4 males were called Mark. Hilarity ensued!

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm called Peter at work and one of my friends uses it, but to the rest of the world its Pete. On a book jacket I'd be Peter though, plus my middle initial (incase my Dad claims credit).

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

There were FIVE Richards in my primary school class, but I felt no hatred for any of them. Nowadays I don't actually know that many, despite it being a fairly common name.

AFA ILX IC that Gillanders geezer seems like a fine sort of fellow to me.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Too true. I hate all other Sarahs and especially Saras even though my name is spelled with an H. When I thought the new girl at the office was named Sarah, I burned with rage. It turned out her name was Summer. Ha ha. So I forgive her. But strangely, my best friend in high school was named Sarah. And we tired of hearing people call us the Sarahs. Hmm...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

STARRY TO THREAD!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve M seems like a very nice fellow indeed but I can't back up his "all Steve's are diamond geezers" claim. A la Pete, I switch between Stephen at work and Stevie elsewhere. Stevie's en masse just seem cooler to me than Steve's, viz: Stevie Smith, Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder, Stevie Jackson, Stevie Gerrard, erm... Stevie Ray Vaughan...

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

And you're "Steve" when we play footie, Jerry...

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

There's ILX Nichole, but her name is spelled a little differently. It never really bothered me when someone else has my name, it's no big deal.

Famous Nicoles don't bother me either. NK is an okay actress, but if she were somebody lame like a Jennifer Love Hewitt-type then maybe it would irritate me.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 3 April 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

STARRY TO THREAD!
Whoopsies!!!! Sorry, Starry. 'Cept you, of course!!!

I've probably mentioned this before, but in my 7th grade English class, the teacher asked us all to discuss different names and their conotations. Selena, the most popular girl in the whole school, raised her hand and said, "I've always found SARAHS to be really snotty and stuck up," and realizing I was sitting beside her quickly added, "Uh, no offense to Sarah or anything."

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always been around other Nicks growing up (in one class in high school, my teacher referred to us as Nick1, Nick2, Nick3, and Moose [football team nickname]). I've been a Nick forever, but there was a girl or two I knew in my youth that thought they should call me Nicholas, and I did quite like that, kinda gives it a distinguishedness or somesuch. Plus, as pretty as their voices were, they coulda be calling me "cockgoblin" and I'd've still swooned.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

There are so many variations of Carey, Cary, Carrie, Kerry , Cari that I never meet anyone with my name exactly. Except for some reason in the 3rd grade there were 3 Carey's and so I had to go by Carey Ann and one had to go by Carey Lee just so they could keep us straight.

But we lezed up anyway.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 3 April 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I've ever met a really rad Amanda. Every Amanda I've ever met was sort of just boring, or a sorority girl. Which is why maybe I go by 'mandee'... although according to the pinefox, 'amanda' is much classier.

Mandee, Thursday, 3 April 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks to my parents' staggering unoriginality and unpreparedness (I've always assumed there was a moment in the delivery room where my Mom smacked her forehead and went 'Oh shit - we have to NAME him'), my father and I share the exact same name, middle and all. As such, the majority of my formative years were spent as 'Marky' - a cutesy little distinguishing gimmick that I've always despised. That said, I've never really had a problem with having such a common surname - it's probably a logical reaction, considering I have such a miserable last.

As for the other Marks on this board - the only way it could ever be a problem would be if I wasn't in such uniformly good company.

Why? Surely you saw the potential for shagging all three of them and never cocking a name up?

There's another bloke called Pete that sits next to me at work. And we both have 'R' as the first letter of our last names. It gets very confusing, but I don't hate him. He does smell, though.

i hate people who share my (real) first name. it's incredibly common, i hate walking through the halls hearing people yell my name and finding out they mean someone else. also i hate people named maria because every time i meet one i feel like my use of the name is less legitimate.

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 3 April 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Subquestion: how do you feel about people who try to diminutise your name? Daniel, will you not settle for people calling you Dan? I refuse to answer to "Katie". It is not my name, and the use of it is ruthlessly discouraged.

I've met too few people with my name (even though it's common) to have opinions on them, but I do hate the diminution thing, and its opposite even more. My first name is Bill: not Billy, no, but not William, either. Bill. I'm named for a Willis who went by Bill, so calling me William doesn't even make any sense...

... and yet people are -so- persistent in assuming that it must be short for William, that I am consistently giving my name as "Bill Such-and-such" even as I watch the clerk type in "William such-and-such." One of my college transcripts is even under "William such-and-such," which caused much confusion and trouble when I transferred.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 3 April 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel, will you not settle for people calling you Dan?

Actually, yeah, but that's more of a nationality thing than anything else. I'm Daniel- not some alien American name like "Dan" or (heaven help us all) "Danny". One girl gave me the Portuguese diminiutive "Dani", which I liked- but then, I had a huge crush on her at the same time, so I would've.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 3 April 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

There's not much to diminutize with "Jody." Sometimes people call me Jo or Jode. Doesn't bother me. I love "JBR," btw. Makes me sound like a politician or novelist of great import.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 April 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to work at place with an ex-employee named Nick that the current employees still saw socially, so at lunch a few times they would mention "Nick" without using his last name when I was there at the table and it would kind of piss me off; that they couldn't possibly be talking about me when I'm sitting there and he's not.

I was afraid this would happen at the LAFAP with Nick Graham, but I don't think it ever did.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 3 April 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

In my mind I liken my name to a bracelet, a trinket, a nice dress or some fancy shoes, or a very trendy haircut that will make boys come over to me in bars and buy me a drink.

Any other people with the same name as me have certainly not made their name as much of an accessory as I have. Therefore they are stupid, do not deserve such a pretty name and I do indeed hate them.

rainy (rainy), Friday, 4 April 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

and also, they might be getting free drinks without really deserving them.

rainy (rainy), Friday, 4 April 2003 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I never really thought about this before, but it's true - I do have an instinctive aversion to people who share my first name. It's almost like I'm thinking, "Well, I certainly can't be friends with this person - it would be TOO CONFUSING."

o. nate (onate), Friday, 4 April 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I always love asking Sarahs how they feel about Saras, and vice versa. Unanimously, each hates the other. "It's not right!" they shriek.

Personally, I'm a sucker for the H. Without it, the name seems incomplete.

Mark P reminded me of the horror that is "Marky", an inevitable consequence of my parents' resolve to give me on a mono-syballic name so it "couldn't be shortened". Kids in my street used to go one step further and call me "Markypoos", in the most asinine simpering voices they could muster. The awfulness was put to bed until Marky Mark & the Funky Bunch made their (brief) impact on the charts.

Possibly not the worst example of name lengthening tho...I heard abt some parents who chose the name Amber for their daughter only to hear their 5-year old blurt out, "Hello 'Amberger!"

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 April 2003 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'see, my mum chose Matthew purely so it would be shortened to Matt. Then I moved to near Liverpool and all her clever planning was undone by Scousers insisting on calling me Matty. Jeez.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 4 April 2003 08:19 (twenty-two years ago)

my mother's suggestions for names for me, Rex and Bruce, were promptly vetoed by my father on the basis that they were "dogs' names".

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 4 April 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I've met two other Madeleines and they are both so m/c they make me shamed. So I christened one Tits Out Maddie (as that's what she always did come closing time) and didn't make friends with the other.

Shortening to Maddie is fine, so long as the person has known me long enough. This period varies for all people and I hate them if they're over-familiar before I am ready for it.

Madeleine (Madeleine), Friday, 4 April 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What did Tits Out Maddie call YOU, do you know?

I like the name Matty. It sounds so affectionate. (Commentators often seem to call the Ipswich/Ireland footballer who shares my SO's name 'Matty' when he is about to score.) Also there's that Fairport Convention song which I like.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 4 April 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a tough one, diminutising an already only one syllable name. I mean, how do you diminutise a name like ... oh, let's pick a random example of, say, "Joe"? You can hardly say Joey, that just sounds waaayyyy too Guyland. I could be really redneck and say Joe-Boy, but I'd probably get smacked. I know too many Joe's right now, it's too confusing.

kate, Friday, 4 April 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i know about 26 Daves :(

stevem (blueski), Friday, 4 April 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a sucker for the H. Without it, the name seems incomplete.

Thanks, jaymc. (Not that I had anything to do with it, ha ha).

There are two ladies at work also named Sarah, but one of them insists that her name is pronounced "SORE-UH" even though it's spelled "S A R A." What a dumbnut.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a tough one, diminutising an already only one syllable name.

That's why you extend it instead (or rather why my high friends did).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going by Sar for now on. Or maybe just Sa. Hmmm...

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

How about Johnners?

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 4 April 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Steve gets shortened to Ste, round here.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 4 April 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

One of my oldest and best friends is another Martin, so I'm basically in favour of the name. There was another Martin here who left just before I showed up, and I quite like being the only one here - though I have met that predecessor, and liked him too.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate when people assume my first name -- John -- is short for Jonathan, even when they know I have an H in my name. Yes, Jon could conceivably be short for Jonathan, but not John. And more to the point, isn't John the more popular, and thus default name? You should assume I'm just-plain-John unless I tell you otherwise. Know what I mean?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I wished I was named Art after my dad. I always wanted to be called "Artie", i think that would rock. Chris is boring.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

"Yo, Artie whats up!"

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Christine Hamilton is pretty unfortunate...

Artie Ziff:

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny thing is Artie Ziff looks just like my dad in college.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 4 April 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't hate it when people share my name, but i get strangely annoyed by people who spell their name sandi. ok, apparently, ending it with a y is the boy way of spelling it, but i don't care, i like it better. sandie is ever nicer.

this thread has just made me realize that my current workplace is the second i've been at where there are 2 other sandy's (apart from me) with one ending it with an i and the other with a y. actually, the only time i've ever met people who share my name *is* at work.

sand.y, Friday, 4 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate no Anthony. Though I used to hate Tonys.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 4 April 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd totally hate being called Tony if I were Anthony. Or being called Bob or Bobby if I was Robert. Wouldn't mind Katie. Marky would be hardcore.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Friday, 4 April 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Spoken like a true Daniel (as opposed to a true Danny). The only people who are allowed to call me Tony are people who knew me before 6th grade and girls who are running their hands through my hair that second.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 4 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I get truly irritated by people who USE my name, eg., 'Richard, you should stop doobie doobie doo', or 'Richard the thing about you is daa de daa de daa.'

Do many people do this regularly? When people call me by my name in this condescending manner, I just can't take seriously whatever they're trying to say to me.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder what would happen if Emmy-Kate from Kenickie made an appearance on this board?

uhhhh i think i would explode

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 4 April 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

No one is really diving into the real issue here, which is that there are two Allys on this board, of opposite sex.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 5 April 2003 02:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe I can interestingise my name with a hyphen adding it to my second name? Both short and catchy - both strong and noble. Yes, from now on I shall be know as Mark-Blair.

One of my interweb pseudonyms (I had to go under one for work reasons) was Sandy. I liked the ambiguousness. I still have it in reserve should I ever need to go under cover again.

I also agree with Richard Gatinha, though my friends tend not to be from the scat or doo-wop communities.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 5 April 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never met another David, so it's not a problem.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate people who share my name spelt exactly the same, especially when they are hedonistic footballing layabouts wasting time on england's left flank.

i have friends who are kierans, ciarans and kirans. i don't think any of us pronounce it any differently, but i don't feel for a second that any of them share *my* name.

btw apologies to the kieran who posts here. you have been here longer and i didn't realise else i would have come up with something more than one letter different!

kieron, Saturday, 5 April 2003 08:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(Kieron Gillen?)

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 5 April 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Only met one other 0le Mar+in -- he was pretty nice. Celebrities? Well, the closest I know of is this my compatriot, who scores a few goals in the Belgian league -- good for him.

So, no.

OleM (OleM), Saturday, 5 April 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

what me ? no way, sadly... i respect tha gillen tho, as the internet's (and therefore poss the world's) leading kierOn. followed by about 3 english footballers and then me :)

kieron, Saturday, 5 April 2003 08:38 (twenty-two years ago)

my friends tend not to be from the scat or doo-wop communities.

It took me a minute here to realise you meant a genre of music. Or at least, I hope you are.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 6 April 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I shouldn't have a problem with it but there is a Julio Iglesias. A couple of ppl have joked abt it so it can get annoying.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 6 April 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

DCLMC to thread.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate it when people say, "Oh, Kirsten like the American Girls doll" or "Oh, like Kirsten Dunst," especially since I was around before EITHER of those. Also, when I was a kid I never knew anyone with my name, but now I hear lots of people calling their little girls "Kirsten". It does annoy me.

kirsten (kirsten), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nobody around here has ever had my (real) first name, so I've always been able to phone anybody I've ever met, even glancingly, and announce, "This is [x]," and they know instantly who it is. But now there seem to be a lot of...small children. With my name. In five years the air of the streets will be clotted with mothers yelling "[x]! [x]! Time for dinner!" And ten years after that I'll call people and they'll think it's little Suzy's boyfriend calling for her. *sigh*

Methuselah (Methuselah), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't hate anyone else named Julia (although it was weird when I went to college and all of a sudden there were hordes of Julias and Julies). However, people who call me Julie when I've introduced myself as Julia need to die in a slow and painful manner.

Okay, maybe they don't need to die, but it does bug me. Then there were those people I went to school with who called me Jules, as if I didn't already have gender identification issues.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't hate people who share my first name, but i desperately despise anyone who shares both my first name and surname. bastards.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate people who share my first name and allow themselves to be called 'Tommy', making it seem as if it is permissible to call ALL of us 'Tommy' which is patently FALSE and a very very shaky assumption I advise any and all of you to stop making immediately, if you were making it, or even considering it as a future assumption. I will never, ever purchase or wear Mr. Hilfiger's apparel for this very reason (also it is overpriced and generally dumm-looking)

Millar (Millar), Monday, 7 April 2003 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

There's someone in San Francisco who shares my first AND last name, and I'm kind of curious about him.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 7 April 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was younger, a friend's mother told me she'd read in the paper that someone named [same first + last name as me] in [small neighbouring city] had their house burn down - this was obviously a lie. I still have no idea why she would make up this story.

Poppy (poppy), Monday, 7 April 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I like all Andrews 'cos it's like we're saying to the Andys "hey grow up stop giving our name a bad rep"

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 7 April 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There was another Karen in my circle of close friends at college. I suppose I guarded fairly jealously the status of being just 'Karen' and not 'no, the other Karen', ie the one uppermost in everyone's minds. Then when I had a boyfriend within the group I became 'Paul's Karen'. This led to her being 'nobody's Karen' and I felt sorry for her. By the time we left I was K-Mac and she was K-L and neither of us could stand it.
I still send her a Christmas card every year. Ironically she married a bloke called Paul (not the same one) so it's turned full circle in the last 20 years.

Karen, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a movie named after me!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

no one else owns MY first name. if you see any other ambrose's, then tell me and i'll kill em

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know any other Caitlins.

I also have another name, as a lot of you know, and it's shared by someone else who I see fairly regularly. However, none of our mutual friends know that it used to be my name too, and it can get a bit confusing when I'm drunk.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sober and it's confusing the hell out fo me!

smee (smee), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha-ha! I actually forgot that it was me that started this thread. I was just looking through the new answers page to see if there were any that I'd missed, and saw the thread title and immediately thought "argh, yes! I hate them! Kill Kill kill!!!" and then clicked and saw that it was me. Oh dear.

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, load of mark's. not fussed.

(she was named before she was born)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

don't know any other Ronans as I said above, but I googled myself a few months back only to find loads of dance-ie newsgroup type entries from someone with my full name. I was thinking I'd find some fellow raver with the exact same name, then I realised it was actually Irish dancing he was involved with. Like flatley style stuff.

Still a fucking weird coincidence.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it is perfectly acceptable for YOU to hate anyone else with your name Ronan! ;-0

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a very close friend who not only shares my first name, but my middle name also, I like this.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I fucking pity anyone who shares my first name.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ha what do you mean?

I was thinking I can't really hate Ronan Keating, he has made telling people my name in the UK or outside Ireland a far simpler thing. Also he screamed at a guy in the chipper before and it was hilarious.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Pash, your first name is great! I've told you before, that was my grandfather's name. It's very historical and noble.

(However, point taken, the abbreviation is kinda dud, due to Cheers.)

HRH Queen Kate (kate), Monday, 15 December 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

so it's a tradeoff.

All other Alex's are gay. And I mean all of them. Don't even get me started on the al's - that name is copyright protected and patented. I've killed all the only other al's I've come across and presently I'm sending letter bombs to Mr Pacino..

In the past I have had an uneasy relationship with other Sarahs, but only due to the name itself--I have gotten along with all of them. I don't currently know any--the last fellow Sarah was hired after me at my last proper job way back in, oh, 1999 and she was quite short. As I am 6 ft. tall my boss began referring to us both as "Little" and "Big" respectively. This sucked, especially as she was not being at all original since every other Sarah I've been friends with (and there have been at least 3) has been shorter than I am, eliciting the above witticism also. :(

(And yes Mark it's written into our contract that you MUST like my name! ;))

sgs, I totally understand, as I am also a 6' Sarah. Fortunately for me though, there was already a girl named Sarah in my neighborhood growing up who was a couple of years older than me. Thus, I was often called "Little Sarah." Ha ha. Little did they know...

you doesn't hasta call me johnson (CaptainLorax), Monday, 23 August 2010 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

I'm pretty cool with people who share my name because they tend to be pretty cool. After reading the original post I'm glad my name is the diminutive form of Kate. Yeesh. I thought I'd grow to become a Kate one day or turn into a full blown Kathleen but they just never stick. Even if I don't tell people my nickname or try to use the more adult form of it they somehow figure it out or add the -ie. It permeates my being.

I'm suspicious of people with my last name who aren't related to me. I have never met one in person.

there's a guy round these parts who posts with my first name as his display name, except he's applied to it this whimsical or whatever formatting scheme, and for that i hate him. drives me nuts cause it's such a beautiful and noble name that should never under any circumstances be subjected to such lexical asshattery, yet there it always is, ridiculing me (and to a lesser extent, us)

I never meet anyone with my name

glitter hands! glitter hands! razzle! dazzle! (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 23 August 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

del griffith's first name is 'Nedaraggett' btw

iatee, Monday, 23 August 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)

I apologise if your name is Herman.

My first name is most commonly a surname and a very rare forename, only ever met one in fact, he was 2 years older than me at secondary school.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 23 August 2010 19:32 (fifteen years ago)

hello my name is Nedraggett Jones it is nice to meet you

del griffith, Monday, 23 August 2010 19:34 (fifteen years ago)

My name is rare enough that I don't encounter many people with it, but common enough that every few years I have to shake hands with someone who's like "Doug - that's a great name. You see, I'm a Doug too!" which to me seems like a really awkward introductory gambit.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Monday, 23 August 2010 19:36 (fifteen years ago)

I was like 7 the first time I met another Doug.

meat by mistake (kkvgz), Monday, 23 August 2010 19:37 (fifteen years ago)

dougs sorta sound like dicks if that's the case

iatee, Monday, 23 August 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

I mean in the asshole sense not in the name 'dick' sense, dicks probably don't say "I'm a dick!" that often

iatee, Monday, 23 August 2010 19:39 (fifteen years ago)

It would be awkward if I hated people who share my first name. My office mate has the same name! Two patron saints of Scotland back here!

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Monday, 23 August 2010 19:48 (fifteen years ago)

I feel like it would ruin movies and tv shows for me if characters had my first name

iatee, Monday, 23 August 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

if you GIS for "officemate" you get like 80% filipinos

del griffith, Monday, 23 August 2010 19:57 (fifteen years ago)

jeremys – my given name – are a dime a dozen, and they usually suck

definitely the only person on the planet w/ my full name and although I like the concept, I'd rather have google-anonymity.

the only people i've met with my first name have been nice middle-aged ladies, hard to hate.

missed two gucci mane punchlines and had to rewind (c sharp major), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 07:35 (fifteen years ago)

all the Heathers I've ever met have been disconcertingly normal and hard to dislike. nothing like the movie either.

yes. how could i not hate someone trying to steal my name?

i've wanted to do a noise band composed entirely of people with my first name (which is Sarah) for a while - I could probably easily round up 6 or 7 that I hang w/regularly

sarahel, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 08:29 (fifteen years ago)

though in high school it was ridiculous, because not only were there regularly two other Sarahs - we all had the same middle name - (which does start with an "e")

sarahel, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 08:31 (fifteen years ago)

I have a very common name - more or less a hibernian John Smith. Good for superficial googleproofing, but some awful shits do share it - gun nuts, catholic frat boys, etc.

o ffs now i have an indie/alt.country band. I hadn't seen that before.

tetrahedron of space (woof), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 09:06 (fifteen years ago)

I've known surprisingly few other Toms, and generally have been 10,000 times more awesome than them so hating not really worthwhile.

I have not worked out how I feel about Karens.

Karen seems to be a Norse version of Catherine and I *HATE* Catherines but perhaps the Viking-ness makes up for it.

definitely the only person on the planet w/ my full name and although I like the concept, I'd rather have google-anonymity. gf's super common full name gets 634,000 google results vs. 23 for me.

i am in this exact same situation, and I know exactly what you mean. Weird hebrew-american names represent!

dayo, Tuesday, 24 August 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

I got really annoyed when I was about 7 and met someone with the same name as me. A few years ago I was in Boots and a girl was running around while her mother was shouting her (my?) name at the top of her voice. I got talking with the mum but the girl didn't want to talk to me because I stole her name. Fair enough.

8 (88), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

They're the only two people I've ever met with my name, there was a minor Simpsons character with aswell though, and that annoyed me too.
