I do look at ILX quite a bit, and give it a bit of a kick now and then to fix things up, but I just don't have time to have an involved look at why it's fucking up the way it is. Fortunately, Alan has agreed to have another look at the code in the next couple of weeks or so, so we should start to see a solution at some stage.

Sorry about the mess, I’m in the middle of a work trip and have limited time to diagnose. At first glance it does seem to be AI crawlers but I’ll take a deeper look when I can. Everything is backed up so there’s no long term risk, but it might be bumpy for a bit until I can fix it properly.

Dumb question here: how does ILX work? Where is the site hosted? Does it cost money to maintain? Are there fundraisers I have not noticed for 20 years?
― Cow_Art, Monday, 24 February 2025 15:06 (eleven months ago)
And is there a tip jar, basically

xps There were fundraisers in the past.
― Kim Kimberly, Monday, 24 February 2025 16:37 (eleven months ago)
iirc They usually passed by really quickly as the goal would be reached within a day. But afaik there hasn't been one in a long time now.
― Kim Kimberly, Monday, 24 February 2025 16:40 (eleven months ago)
It's hosted in the UK in a place that gave me a good long-term deal. Because it's a pretty old-school setup (one big server does it all) it's cheaper than comparable modern multi-service multi-server setups so I just pay for it myself. If a big expense were to arise I'd ask for support again. And I should check what all this bot hammering is doing to our bandwidth bill ...
― stet, Monday, 24 February 2025 20:41 (eleven months ago)
don't hesitate to ask for financial support. we're all very willing to give it.

For real. I get more value out of this place than many things I pay good money for, and I've always arrived to the donation threads to find them already successfully accomplished. It's very generous of you to run it out of pocket, stet, whatever that looks like, but you certainly don't have to do so!

I still have friends/enemies from long-deceased forums I played on circa 2000; indeed I married one of them.*
But unlike ilx there isn't a comparable space where one can suddenly say "...and ANOTHER thing!" about a disagreement that dates from the Clinton administration.
(* = we already knew each other in meatspace, but the point stands.)
― at your swervice (Ye Mad Puffin), Thursday, 27 February 2025 11:33 (eleven months ago)
I had forgotten the word "meatspace" ever existed! It's a relic of Al Gore's information superhighway era.
