A question about ILX user capacity

Message Bookmarked

I'm not sure if this is something that has been discussed around here before, but I was wondering if anyone has considered taking up a "collection" so that ILX could expand its capacity? Or is it thought that it's big enough already? I'd fork over some bread to more efficiently waste time at work. Sorry if this question offends the powers that be.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

By 'user capacity' you mean...?

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Bandwidth, most likely. Bryan's probably seeing the "THERE ARE TOO MANY SQL CONNECTIONS TURN BACK YOU POXY FULE" message that I've been getting this morning.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

those messages are caused probably by people recategorising threads. There's a bit of a problem in that the updates queue up behind search requests and then everything else queues up behind them, and eventually all of the slots are filled up. It's not a bandwidth issue though, it's poor programming which wuold take a few moments to fix.

grraham, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dan = OTM. Normally this thing works just fine for me (can't imagine what it's like for the dial-up folks). Anyway, I just realized that my suggestion was probably unworkable at best and highly offensive to lots of other users at worst.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Atually, you were all OTM. Thanks.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Actually, you were all OTM. Thanks.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

HA!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wish that error message did say "TURN BACK YOU POXY FULE".

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

For once, I resisted making a suggestive remark based around all of this.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's nowt to do with capacity. If you'd like to raise money for a better programmer though.

grraham, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

grraham, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

YEs, can we have the SQL too many collections changed to say TURN BACK YOU POXY FULE please. Please, please.

When's the exam Graham? And where do we put the money? I put a quid in the floppy drive of my computer - can you get that?

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

The exam is tomorrow, but I've not done the coursework so I've sort of failed anyway. Caitlin got her way. Does anyone want to crash the server?

I'm on a mac, so no floppy drive. How about you pay me in Buffy boxsets?

grraham, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:01 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe this is the time the moderators are doing all their thread categorizations, however? Or doing those last-minute searches before leaving work for the day?

Oh why not, Christine?

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Obviously the solution is to port ILX to ORACLE.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

Because... I have a headache.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can the ILX error message have silly pictures???

Jon Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

how many users use ILX? (Is that on the user link or FAQ link, I'll check...)

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

When I get back to Australia in July I'll consider upgrading the ILX server once again. I don't think this will be necessary, though, because as Graham said (you really should listen to him, you know) most of the slowness is due to minor programming oversights.

I don't think any donations are warranted at this point.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

If funds are needed for an upgrade, however, I'm pretty sure most everyone around here would be willing to help.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

But no reimbursement otherwise, huh?

For each Buffy box set I get in the post, one buggy UPDATE command because a concurrency-friendly REPLACE DELAYED. Or just send me a card. That'd be nice.

I'm fucking serious.

grraham, Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I feel so guilty, I'm so way behind on all my mail. I have 3 cents in my wallet (for real), but when I do get money again on Friday I will send you a present G or die in the attempt.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

A card is on its way. Watch your box fill up! BE QUIET, CHRISTINE!!!

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Ha ha - wait for moderator action when they realise Graham has posted his real, actual address and is now target for terroroists and other reasons why we don't post real actual addresses (which are?))

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Because creepy (in their own minds, anyway) fellers from the Canadian prairies might send them greeting cards in lieu of Buffy box sets?

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

What did I do?

I can send people cards. I only wish I had any money to spare. Quite seriously, for once.

Funnily enough, I've never filled anyone's box...

Just post your address and I'll send the cheque out today.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

The reasons apply to ppl posting their own and regretting it, or people posting other people's, Pete. If Graham wants to post his own address then that's fine.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

My address... used to be on my Web site (I was selling something)... but it isn't anymore! This was years ago. You live and learn. Although, to be fair, I never received anything improper from it.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

No, it wasn't used underwear I was selling, either...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Don't be scared, Ed. I was joking. I started posting on ILM in the summer of 2001 with my real name (first and last) but got rid of that soon after. I'd be very easy to find, though no one would want to. It is pretty strange when I get phone calls from ex-girlfriends at 3 am, though.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 26 March 2003 19:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am pissed off that no one mentioned me on the favourite ILx posters thing, and when they finally did, and mark was trying to be nice, it was about all the work I do, not "Graham has interesting and amusing things to say about everything" or anything like that. That sucks.

I am pissed off I hardly ever get told what to do. On all the anti-trolling and anonymity and such threads, people come up with all sorts of ideas, "Graham, how about we have a system where ...". Then no one ever says whether they actually want it done or not. If you leave someone sitting at command line to do their own thing, then what right have you to complain when they start doing their own thing?

If you just want a goon to do all the work for you behind the scenes, then fine, but that's not a favour for friends, that's a job, and I expect to be paid for it. As this thread demonstrates, whoever does this is expected not to have a personality and not to be human, ever.

I don't mind at all doing all this stuff, but I want you to realise there are big sacrifices involved. Sending me a card isn't such a ridiculous idea, is it? And no fucking way am I handing over my code to you lot after all you've put me through.

That's a start, anyway. I'll reply to the people who sent me email.

Graham (graham), Friday, 28 March 2003 12:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

"mark was trying to be nice":

In all the many many MANY hours, I have spent babying you through your countless selfish tantrums, Graham, you have never ONCE expressed the slightest interest or concern in anything happening in my life. NEVER ONCE. Do you get it? Do you get it yet? Do you GET it yet? Many people have made tremendous efforts on your behalf on this board: every single time you turn round and kick them in the fucking teeth: punish them for caring, punish them for trying, give them NOTHING IN RETURN BUT GRIEF.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to devote more time to you this week, I've actually been busy with stuff which doesn't involve this board. I'm sorry I don't rack up as a friend in your peculiar little world — bcz I'm not a cute girly cartoon character and/or yr total emotional slave, or whatever it is you're wanting. I'm sorry that the immense time and effort I've given up for you over the last year means so utterly little to you.

I'll email you at the weekend. I'm fucking angry with you about this, and with me you haven't got the tiniest, slightiest, faintest ghoast of an invented excuse to back your way out of it.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

No-one has mentioned me on favourite ilx posters either - except, I think, Andrew F? - which was nice of him.

I find that I am not too bothered about this.

the pinefox, Friday, 28 March 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

mark- you're a damn fine human being (I know its obvious thing to say but I'll say it). Have a good weekend. Relax and take care.

ha! I want to see nabisco's essay.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 28 March 2003 13:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham yr role as the great programmer is far more important to nearly everyone here than yr role as poster, cos you enable ILX to actually EXIST and WORK. This may just be the reason people aren't quick to rate you as a poster. Mark it's not good at all to hear you so angry, I think perhaps (OH NO NEW FEATURE FUCK) a list of moderators/their emails somewhere (and the hours they're most likely avail.) might be a good idea, but no-one's going to rely on any of us the way they do on you (same thing might happen w/G if he shared out the programming), sorry. This is no doubt the wrong thread for suggesting that, I'll go and find another one.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Mark's frustration is exactly why I think having a large moderator recruitment drive and then saying, "Well, all of these new moderators are subservient to Grand Poobah Mods #1 and #2 and have to run all actions past them first" isn't necessarily a good idea.)

Samson, Friday, 28 March 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tom (Groke), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think this has much to do with moderation either.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, I am mental, please ignore me.

(I had a larger post explaining how I saw Mark's frustration at being labelled a moderator gateway as being a large factor in how he was reacting to this, but I was looking at this in terms of how it affects the board instead of in terms of the relationship between Graham and Mark that the board enables and shortly after posting I went, "ARGH WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?")

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

You should do everything in moderation though Tom.

Pete (Pete), Friday, 28 March 2003 14:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think I've ever claimed to be nice. (Although I agree with everyone else now that I'm being more rational. My initial comment was made in terms of thinking, "What's the fastest way to take action and not interrupt the functioning of the board?" and not "Hmm, Graham owns this code and would get really, really irritated if we tried to steal it.")

I am pissed off that no one mentioned me on the favourite ILx posters thing, and when they finally did, and mark was trying to be nice, it was about all the work I do, not "Graham has interesting and amusing things to say about everything" or anything like that. That sucks.

I was mentioned like once on ILM and not at all on ILE. But that's okay because I don't validate myself by the boards and ppls estimation of me here + I figure the ppl that would mention me are the types who don't becuz they don't go in for those types of threads (which is like a spectacularly tight irrefutable and unprovable justification but hey, whatever works). Ppl. have short attention spans and were just throwing in on jokes and whoever had been particularly silly/on-point in the last few days or whatever -- you can't take these types of things too seriously.

That's chop-logic, and I expect you know it. Ppl appreciate all the work you've put into the boards, and we're always delighted with new k-kewl features but if any were *rilly* necessary the lizards would raise a stink about it -- mainly we've hashed things out and the boards seem pretty stable and solid at this point (with the possible exception of the tweaks to SQL calls to make them synchronize better) so it's not like there are many U&K things to do. Which might be part of where yr. coming from -- if the board keeps going on its own and no longer needs a wizard, then you can't get validation from yr. dazzling techne-trix. (haha if you love something [i.e. code] let it go).

In other words, yr. not expected to keep it all behind-the-scenes even in the same sense mods are (since when mods don't everyone gets all freaky about it). If you had posted a thread that said something like "Hey cool people! The boards have been slow becuz some tweaks need to happen. But I'm sorta down right now so it's slow going. Some cards might cheer me up tho -- also here is a picture of a kitten!" then I'm sure you would have gotten a more pleasant response -- it was the tone which came out all wrong, not that you talked about what was going on with the boards etc.

If you just want a goon to do all the work for you behind the scenes, then fine, but that's not a favour for friends, that's a job, and I expect to be paid for it. As this thread demonstrates, whoever does this is expected not to have a personality and not to be human, ever.

First a number of ppl. were quite forgiving of yr. actions on the "Shouting At People" thread and understanding -- but people were going to split on it just like they do on lits of heated debates & the main thing I think is to treat the boards with the respect they deserve as posessing a life of their own rather than yr. personal domain -- something I know Tom has spent plenty of time thinking about since the first days of ILX too.

And no fucking way am I handing over my code to you lot after all you've put me through.

And for christsakes, don't just think of what the boards have put you through, but also what you've gotten from them. Otherwise its like breaking up with a girlfriend then burning her stuff because she said terrible things to you for the week while you were fighting.

I really hope you can think this through and come to some resolution here coz ppl. do like you and appreciate you and it would be a shame if you never understood how these things work.
