I never owned Fugazi. I think I picked up Script... after seeing them open disastrously for Rush (and get virtually booed offstage). There is something decidedly masturbatory about their schtick (although I have no idea what they sound like without Fish), but they had sort've a burly presence as well. I quite like the sprawling-if-needlessly-histrionic title track and "He Knows You Know." I think I toyed with picking up whichever album had "Incommunicado" on it (circa `87 or so), but never did. Never thought much of "Kayleigh" (their "big single"), though.

Getting back to this thread question, however, most of the kids in my high school who went out and bought the right hair-spray and gear knew precious fuckin' little about the actual music and cared more about the appearance, begging the question: "what makes a Punk Rocker?" If it was strictly tonsorial/sartorial, then no I definetely wasn't. If it meant identifying with the actual music, then sure I was. But, I was also fond of stoopid metal and the odd prog record, so whatever.

(On the Marillion tangent -- my ex is a huuuge fanatical fan of them, particularly the post-Fish band. The new singer's Steve Hogarth, who sounds kind of like a plaintive Robbie Williams with a higher-pitched voice, and the band's become much more arty and emotive and concept-album-ish, with very little in common with the Fish era, catering heavily to their viciously loyal online fanclub. That said, though, even though I've been horrendously overexposed to the band, I think Script.. holds up pretty well.)

Yeah, I read that as well. It was a but of a larf, I suppose, but the only such event I ever went to (a Hawkwind fan convention) was not a whole lot ov phun so I wouldn't fancy it much myself.

I do remember that a lot of the early '80's prog revivalists - 12th night, pallas etc etc, before they got rekkid deals & became mulletheadz, went for the whole anarcho-grebo-combat gear look, and were virtually indistinguishable from yer average sub-crass anarcho punk band, apart fromthe gabriel-alike singer (drone drone i saw dagaband at sunderland old twenty-nine, here & now gigging w/atv etc etc etc all fall asleep)

In my review of GC for the Voice I say the song starts off like the best MBV song ever (there's this loud distorted guitar and qausi-violin trill deal at the beginning that implies at the very least that producer Eric Valentine knew of the band). The funny thing is in the original version I wrote that it starts off like the best MBV song ever, and then gets better.

I don't have another throw-update as of yet, but you wanna hear some fucked up crazy shit? You'll all be able to claim to know our band before we broke into the scene, so me and the other members of the SuicIdols will throw in some stories from our past to keep all your puckered buttholes happy, so listen up! When I was in high school, up in my hometown of Port Angeles, Washington (where the band Ninety Pound Wuss came from, I was friends and went to school with the lead singer Jeff Bettger's little sister, Jennifer,) I didn't know what I wanted to do with my life but be a rockstar, and since that didn't seem very likely, I thought it would be cool to get paid to shoot guns and kill people, so I joined the Marines and became a Heavy Machinegunner in the Infantry. But before you all scream sell out, keep in mind that I started drinking heavy and partied alot, and even started a punk band and pissed off as many people as I could and was finally kicked out of the military after two years for not being able to conform to military standards. Anway knuckleheads, I was stationed in Sasebo, Japan and got really drunk at a bar I frequented. These people sell fucking fireworks yearround, and you can go to one of their shitty 7-11 imitation stores and buy bottlerockets and M-80's in the motherfuckin' candy isle, and so we did after one night of heavy drinking. After firing them off at eachother for a couple hours, and singing every Rancid, Casualties, Exploited and Total Chaos song we could think of, we headed back to base. Minutes later, my friends noticed I wasn't with them, and backtracked ten blocks, finally seeing me climbing up a fireescape to the roof of an eight story motel. They climbed up after me, and when they reached the top, I had broken a pipe off a stupid tv antennae, and threw it up on my shoulder like a rocket launcher and told them to load me up. And they did. Minutes later, at six o'clock, all the Japanese businessmen began their daily trek to their offices and I let em all have it! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! It was fucking hilarious seeing them all run for cover, screaming in terror like we were dropping another fucking Fat Man or Little Boy on their wannabe Samurai asses! Naples Teens Charged In Brevard Grave Robbery

PALM BAY -- Two Naples teenagers are accused of stealing cremated remains and rosary beads from a Palm Bay cemetery.

Authorities say 18-year-old Tara Lea Forste and 17-year-old Christopher Dean Chauncey were arrested Monday night. They face felony counts of burglary, grand theft, disturbing the contents of a tomb and abuse of a human body.

The theft was discovered Sunday when a woman walked into a mausoleum at Fountainhead Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Palm Bay and discovered the facility had been vandalized. The cremated remains of a woman, a set of rosary beads and a gold ring were recovered Sunday when two witnesses came forward.

Police are investigating possible links to a grave robbery in Naples, in which two sets of rosary beads were reported stolen. (AP)

I dunno if anyone hates Smash, Speedy! Hell I dont. I just think, if he's genuine (and hey he seems genuine to me), that its a bit much to claim True Punk is being dirt poor, stealing shit, being rude, vaguely homophobic, shouty and gung-ho about violence. Its all a bit Vyv or Alan Parker to me. It looks too much like a shtick. Punk ethos is great, but to harp on about being "street" just looks a bit daft I think :-/

And hey, I'm no punk. But I love Black Flag, Fugazi, the Clash, Suicidal Tendancies etc so hey I dunno.

My life story is so crazy, anytime I tell it to a therapist, they gotta go see therapists, and believe what you want, but I ain't fucking shitting you. I'm using this as a self promotional tool, but nothing I've said has been falsified, it's all fucking true. I was taken from my parents and put through fifty foster homes in two years (the equivelant of a different family every two weeks,) and my two brothers and I were put up for adoption when I was thirteen like slaves waiting on the auction block. Then I failed the Marine Corps after barely passing high school and the rest will soon be history. So hopefully some of you buggers can see where some of my narcistic opinions and hostility comes from. I don't understand what there is to rebel against if you come from a rich, or medium class family where you have everything handed to you and have absolutely nothing to worry about, or maybe some of you can SCHOOL my WHITE TRASH ass! None of you have been able to do that yet, and to top things off, I ain't going nowhere but to the top, I'm here to stay bitches. Well, let's see. He brags about not having a job or any sense of personal responsibility, being thrown out of the army, he quite enjoys firing off the epithet "faggot" and zealously boasts about random acts of violent stupidity (also referring to the Japanese as "Samurai-wannabes" and alluding to the dropping of the Atom bomb on them) and continually proclaims to have done it all in the rather presumptiously assumed name of PUNK, something he clearly hasn't done a great deal of homework about. If he wants to go around acting like an idiot, that's fine, but don't assert that it has anything to do with Punk Rock, dammit. All in all, I find him pretty reprehensible,which is why I find it rather easy to judge him. More than likely, however, nine tenths of his screed is utter bullshit.

Well, I can't imagine his music is anything to write home about. At best, it's probably ripe for an Exploited cover band. But, that's not really the point, is it. I'm not talking about his music or him being in a band. In those ventures, good luck to him, but it's his unwaivering adherence to the notion that Punk is nothing much than mindless idiocy that upsets me the most.

One of the major points behind punk rock which I have learned traveling squat to squat is unity, which none of you have done or even mentioned yet. My biological parents are Scottish immigrants and were roadies for a couple small punk bands in England when the Clash, Sex Pistols and Buzzcocks were all forming and back then, the old school punk lifestyle, which is all I've been talking about rising from the dead, the bands were formed by people from the streets who brought up topics like unity, and the oppression of governments and police force, which caused alot of people to be on the streets for various reasons, and drugs and alcohol, and poverty, and saying "Damn the man!" and whoever else doesn't believe in what you're doing, though you do. It takes alot to rise from poverty, and living on the streets, which is where unity came in and still does. Punk rock ain't specifically about the music, but the lifestyle. The music is what put the fire back inside those people. Back then, you couldn't listen to a punk band unless you were old enough to enter a bar. Now I'm seeing ten, eleven year old kids running around calling themselves punk rockers like it was Halloween costume like was said in someone's comments above, which pisses me off because the way I grew up and was raised I feel calling myself a punk rocker is a BIRTH RIGHT. That's how long I've been involved in various scenes state and world wide. I was listening to the Exploited and Clash back when the other kids my age were reading books like SEE SPOT RUN. So, whatever happened to keeping an open mind? Because some of you who have been writing back to me since I stole your scene said that was the biggest point in punk, which I have never denied. Some of you though have bigger holes in your asses than the hole in my open mind. HA!HA!HA!HA! Suck on that egg! Oh yeah, who said my life is shitty? Not me. I chose my lifestyle. Moreover, I only post as myself. There was a brief period when I posted under the name Motel Hell, but that's a long time ago. Beyond that I wouldn't bother wasting time posting as anyone else.

My wish is that Smash would temper his bluster with a little humilty, introspection and respect for that which he claims to represent. You like the outfit and the pose and the rhetoric, but try delving a bit deeper and LISTENING the messages. I don't claim to be a punk, nor do I categorically make sweeping absolutes about it. But by the same token, I was at least cognizant when it was a going concern, and not just another shallow pose. I am a middle-aged, middle-class editor/freelance journalist (not yet a father of one, bu that's coming). Nor have I ever claimed to live oustide the system. That does not preclude me, however, from being informed. In the same way you'd all get your quills up if I started making statements like "REAL HIP HOP IS THIS AND REAL B-BOYS DO THAT, AND ONLY REAL HIP-HOP IS ABOUT THIS", I bristle as Smash's misinformed, misanthropic bullshit as being equated with Punk Rock. He does not speak for it. He does not embody it. He does not even understand it. I'm not saying I'm an authority on it, but it's dear enough to me for me to realize it's much more multifacetted than the narrow, cartoonish, idiotic way he portrays it.

Actually, I'd find this really amusing.

Whatever punk is or isn't is not really up for you to define is it? (I mean that is sort of taking the AUTHORITY, ain't it?) PALM BAY -- By now Deena Reichel is accustomed to the stares.

Dean Saunder gives Deena Reichel a shoulder rub. Both say they are members of the "Goth" culture.

Like many of her friends, the 20-year-old can be found walking local stores or shopping malls draped in all black, sometimes mingling Victorian clothing with leather and even fishnet stockings.

"I get a lot of people who come up to me and ask if I want help finding Jesus," said Reichel, a self-described "Goth" subculture enthusiast living in Indian Harbour Beach.

But as three Goth-influenced youths go to court Friday for hearings in a Palm Bay grave desecration case,
Reichel and others in the cultural movement are again defending a largely misunderstood and mysterious lifestyle from the actions of a few others.

Three years ago, it was the Columbine attacks -- with its descriptions of teens in black trench coats -- that first put a national focus on the darkly-clad young adults who listened to industrial or gothic music or who emulated the gray worlds written about by authors such as Anne Rice.

Despite that, the perceptions the movement is tied to something darker is still there, even among parents and relatives of Goths. "I told them, 'This isn't Gothic, this is sick,'" Reichel said of her response to family members linking Goths overall with the cemetery desecrationsJim Oelschlager, director of counseling and psychological services at Florida Tech, said he's seen several Goths over the years and finds many are anti-authority.

"My experience with certain individuals is they're struggling with their identity and finding a sense of acceptance," Oelschlager said.

Oelschlager said he doesn't find the Goth movement to be a sinister subculture. He also said Goth might be the latest successor to other cultural movements.

"In the 60s, you had anti-war stance, which was a powerful issue, and the hippie movement. Today, you don't have a stance like that, so all these sub-movements have popped up," Oelschlager said
The Graveyard
There are no definitive statistics on how many Goths there are nationally. But cultural movement or not, investigators said on Jan. 6, five young adults steeped in the Goth lifestyle -- some with coal black hair, baggy clothes and even the tattoos of an alien skull -- crept onto the grounds of Fountainhead Memorial cemetery in Palm Bay.

In the dark of night, the group broke into a mausoleum and removed the cremated remains of an unidentified woman, reports show.

The group removed a gold ring along with rosary beads from another box before taking the cremated remains back to a Palm Bay home where they sifted the ashes into different containers.

All five were arrested on charges of burglary and abuse of a dead human body in connection with the Jan. 6 incident. They were Joseph Felix, 18; Shawn Catron, 17; Rachel Cooley, 22; Christopher Dean Chauncey, 17 and Tara Lea Forste, 18.

Felix, Cooley and Forste will go before Brevard County Judge David Silverman on Friday to enter pleas on the charges.They told police they were "Goths" and liked spooky places.

"We don't run into a lot of cases involving Gothic participants," said Cmdr. Mark Riley of the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. There have been other instances reported nationwide of youths involved with the Goth culture being involved with similar cases, Riley said.

"It can certainly be a warning flag for behavior outside the norm. From time to time we do see kids involved in that sub society," Riley said of the case.

Many in Brevard's Gothic subculture are outraged by the burglary and don't want to be stereotyped as grave robbers.

Columbine
What is typically referred to as Gothic music started in the late 1970s and stemmed from the Punk movement.
Rock historians with Rolling Stone magazine credit the band Bauhaus as starting Goth. The genre has had several waves since then, although many younger Goths will pledge allegiance to shock rocker Marilyn Manson.

Nationally, Goths gained overnight recognition after the notoriety of the Columbine High School shootings in which 12 people were shot to death and 22 people wounded when teenage gunmen Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold stormed the campus with assault weapons.

The two shooters were initially linked to a clique called "The Trench Coat Mafia." Goths dismiss the two as not being true to Gothic culture and cite the fact that the two had white supremacy leanings.

School officials across the nation -- including Brevard -- soon asked students to refrain from wearing the coats out of concern for disruptions.

And although Klebold and Harris wore black, some say that is where their connections with Goths end. Guilt by association?
"After Columbine people with trench coats became killers. In this case everyone with tattoos and piercings or dresses in black is suddenly considered a grave robber," said Dean Saunders.

Saunders, a 27-year-old Indian Harbour Beach resident, knew one of the youths accused of stealing the ashes and said the grave robbing incident is not indicative of the Gothic subculture.

Being Goth, he said, does not make him abnormal. Saunders considers himself a Christian and has a full-time job as a pool technician. He also enjoys spending time at home with his live-in girlfriend, listening to Jazz or watching "The Simpsons" television show.

What concerns Saunders are the instant perceptions some form about groups like Goths.

He said two of his Goth friends overheard Cooley and others bragging about the incident, prompting them to go to policeSaunders said he had met Cooley through a local role playing game entitled "Vampire, the Masquerade." The game is attended by about 30 people each week, most of whom call themselves Goth.

Reichel, who works at the Atlanta Bread Company, puts her dyed black hair in pig tails and wears black eyeliner with a teardrop painted on her face as part of the vampire character she plays.
Aaron Voss, a representative of White Wolf, the second largest publisher of role playing games in the nation, said grave robbing is not what the games are about.

"All our books specifically have a disclaimer that says this is just a game and if you ever start thinking it's real go talk to somebody because there's a problem," he said.

Goth, the label
Still, not all Goths are into the role-playing games or even in to wearing the heavy makeup.

For Jason Elliott, 23-year old computer teacher, the term Goth is merely a label.

"If you see 80 of us, you're going to notice the five dressed all in black with all the piercings because they're drawing attention to themselves," Elliot said.

"A lot of them are more comfortable with themselves then some people I know who are not Goth."

Thanks for the support, but you made me sound like my face was deformed or something and the Punk Princess hasn't written back or called me since then. Damn. If you're out there Punk Princess, let me know, there's nothing wrong with my face. You can't tell at all that my head was "smashed" between a van bumper and a concrete telephone pole going 40 miles an hour. I was in a coma and on life support for two weeks because of that accident. I flatlined 15 times on the helicopter flight to the Ft.Myers trauma center, and was under the van and had lost 40-60% of my blood for half an hour after the first cops arrived on the scene. No one even knew I had been a part of the accident, including the driver, until a puddle of blood started oozing out from beneath the van like the Blob. My right leg was pulled out from the hip socket and pulled out at a 90 degree angle from the rest of my body, and twisted 180 degrees, so my knee cap was behind me. My shin was shattered in three places, and a big piece of the bone was ripped through the skin, a compound fracture I believe it is called. I couldn't move my right arm for a month, but then taught myself how to use it again because I was getting pissed that I would never get to play guitar again, and it took me four months to learn how to walk again, which I taught myself. I never went to physical therapy, I used iron will. Tell me that that's not punk! I'll get the pictures transferred to disc so I can download them. I look like the Terminator, with the side of my head gone, or Faces of Death. But, believe it or not, you can't tell anything ever happened, except I limp slighly when I walk. But my face looks fine, I'm still getting phone numbers left and right. So get in touch with me, Punk Princess, while supplies last. This could be a limited time offer, you never know. My infamous Thirty Grand in Thirty Days! No one believed that was possible, but like everything else I claim, I proved 'em all wrong! But look where that got me! HA!HA!HA!HA! All my friends forgot my nickname Smash, 'cause they were all calling me Hugh Hefner and their ladies all called me Daddy! I had a lot of shit, and partied my ass off like no other time of my life, and it was great because I shouldn't have lived to enjoy that money, but do you bug-eyed, skeptics know what I learned from all that? Maintenance! If I had worked the whole time I was spending that money, I would have still been putting money back in the bank and kept my apartment, motorcycle, $10,000.00 recording studio and entertainment center that filled 90% of my frigging bedroom, my guitars and skateboards and shit, but after about two months, I noticed my stash getting low, my friends and all the strippers, hookers and call girls that ran around my apartment butt naked at all times of the day dissappearing, then my bank account going below zero and checks bouncing, then ewviction notices started popping up and I still hadn't found a fucking job, then all my shit started going back on the shelves I saved them from, other peoples houses as I sold some of it, and then pawnshops until I lost everything, including the apartment and popularity. But you know what lived through it all? My legend, and believe me, I will be back! So learn from my dumbass mistake, and maintain motherfuckers! Damn! I sidetracked! Me and my big ego, Paul Bunyan sized head and shit! Anyway, my boy Evil Ed's band Cheong Eck are fucking hardcore! I'll keep you posted on them too, followers! You know how we came up with the name Cheong Eck? Inspired by seminal skate-rock like JFA, the Faction, and Negative Approach, Aaron and John decided their other band (industrial dub trio Wolf Eyes) didn’t afford them enough opportunities to truly destroy. After hooking up with their roommate Michael, himself a young veteran of Michigan’s music scene, and eschewing their other projects’ art/noise leanings, Aaron and John started the band as a conduit for old-school, good- times violence.

Less than a year old, Violent Ramp has already developed a rabid following in their home state and a growing cult nationwide on word of mouth alone. At every performance to date they’ve set up skate obstacles in front of their equipment for the audience to thrash. I guess I was punk in attitude though not in style when I was a teen: I was in a local anarchist group, I went to all the animal rights demonstrations, a lot of my friends were punks, I hung with them at the railway station and in parks drinking moonshine, etc. I was even involved in arranging the first outdoors anarchist music festival in Finland. But besides that I only ever went to two punk gigs myself; I wore colourful clothes and listened to techno, so I guess I wasn't a true punk rocker.

"A man and a woman were arrested early Wednesday after deputies say they broke into an East Naples restaurant.

Christopher Dean Chauncey, 23, and Margie Edwards, 19, both of 448 Castle Drive, North Naples, were each charged with burglary of a business and petty theft.

Reports say deputies on patrol noticed items being thrown over a fence toward a parked car in back of Foxboro Sports Tavern, 4200 Thomasson Lane, around 1:45 a.m.

Deputies say Chauncey was throwing the items. Chauncey told deputies that he was at the restaurant to get drinks and cups and that he had permission to be there from a friend who works at the business, reports said.

Chauncey also told deputies that Edwards, his girlfriend, was with him, reports said.
Deputies called for Edwards, who was hiding in nearby bushes.

Both Chauncey and Edwards were wearing black clothing, reports said. Chauncey was wearing a dark blue bandanna around his face. Edwards had a black hat with cut outs for the eyes in one of her pockets, reports said.
