Whose broken record is less predictable?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus. And for the most part, I do think he's got his heart in the right place (if he's got one).

hstencil, Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been arguing with Momus today on the rape thread, but there really is no comparison here.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus easy

Momus is actually interested in hashing out a discussion, in actually starting a discussion for that matter, Momus threads actually go places even if he's turning into 'my uncle, the polemicist', understandable really (middle age + war). Momus isn't neccesarily a reactionary, Geir is never anything but. Geirbot never has anything to add unless you're talking about what HE wants to talk about and even then very rarely (has anyone noticed anything about the Beatles they didn't notice before becuz of a Geir post? the man has no insight to give). This is Momus no contest.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I say Geir. The only discussions Momus is interested in hashing-out are those where he can take a "provocative" position. Geir's theory of music is confusing, but occasionally he'll toss in something that surprises you about what he does like. Whereas when you click on a thread with the title "rape & murder" -- well, if you didn't know that Momus was going to work in a "here's where rape's a great idea" post somewhere, it's only because you hadn't thought about it yet.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

momus never said rape was a great idea.

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ok fair enough - Momus said "here's where rape is acceptable"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir does actually believe what he professes to believe, whereas with Momus it's clearly just a case of treating beliefs like clothing; wehn it comes time to turn those beliefs into action you know which one actually follows through and which one doesn't even bother to vote.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

neither have a clue about hiphop

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

JB, I think that's why I like Momus better, in a sense. He's willing to be flexible, to an absurd extreme, whereas Geir is just absurd.

hstencil, Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not in love with either, but there's something weird about talking about two people on the same board as you as if they're not there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

see i think that momus is v. good at challenging, at calling bullshit, at looking at chinks in the armour.

nick currie named himself after the god of ridicule, come on- you cant take him seriously, and there in lies the power.

greir is just a moron. (plus momus bought me a gin and tonic once.)

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

This whole thread makes me want to scream 'GROW THE FUCK UP PEOPLE' at the top of my lungs. I'm sorry, but I can't grasp what there is to gain in making such utterly petty judgements about people.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

momus is primal scream and geir is oasis!!! one is still relevant whilst the other still goes on about bangin' melodies and the song.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't see any contest here either j0hn - even during classic teeth-grinding feuds Momus at least gestures towards the promotion of discussion, whether he's reading other people's posts or not. In fact in that respect he's practically the anti-geir.

(Geir does surprise from time to time, but like you said - only ever w/r/t his own tastes, the boundaries of which hold zero fascination for me frankly)

jones (actual), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar OTM. J0hn, this silly thread doesn't seem like you.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd take Millar over Momus and Geir, tho.

hstencil, Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil is totally OTM.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus needs to use more cusswords

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, J0hn, I don't really get it either. And honestly this is all a bit playground.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

not familiar with Geir, but Momus is my most interesting read today. Thanks Momus.

BurmaKitty (BurmaKitty), Saturday, 26 April 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ilx in playground-esque shocker

does ANYONE here have the right to snoot down at anyone else about immature behavior on-board?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Not you, Jess!!!! Say it ain't so!!!

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

shut up doomass

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What you going to do? Play me some metal records in a non-ironic fashion? Huh? *pushing you* Huh? Is that it? Huh? *pushing you again*

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Primal Scream are still relevant!!!

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I know that. I love Primal Scream. So what are you going to do? Huh? Cry? *pushes you* Goin' cry? *pushes you* Boohoo. *pushes you* Huh? Crybaby.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

don't push me cuz I'm close to the edge.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah? What happens if I push you? *pushes you* Going to tell your mom? Huh? What's that? A tear? Go home and cry. *pushes you*

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir does actually believe what he professes to believe, whereas with Momus it's clearly just a case of treating beliefs like clothing.

Momus: Everything's Usable

Not a criticism. It was Prescott Lecky who would have us all seeking a consistent sense of self. I'm not sure I agree with that, I seem to seek a happyness or contentment. 'Consistency' is a value that useful for third parties to map onto you, [using an incorrect logic (I think) (ie a proprietal attitude towards past acts ie I own everything I've ever done)], to help their judging you.

Wait. What?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh. Big words from a crybaby. *pushes you* Listen to him use big words. *pushes you* Oh yeah Mr Big Word using crybaby. *pushes you* Why don't you read some Bang!

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.

hstencil, Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Who are you callin' hobgoblin??

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

your mama.

hstencil, Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Proprietal? Or Prescott? Or are you confusing big words with big names?

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

consistency killed the radio star

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah? Come a little closer and say that! That's right. You have to cry. I'm sorry. Crybaby. Boohoo! Boohoo! I'm Hstencil and Cozens. I have to cry. Boohoo!

(o.k. I'll stop...but it's been making me laugh)

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So Sonny, is it true what they say about bullies having little to no self-esteem?

hstencil, Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno?? I would have to be less anti-social to subject myself to bullying... and when i become more social, i could study it...

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

oh FFS *I* could bully Sonny and I'm only little. But I won't.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That's true...actually, Suzy being little and fully capable of bullying me!!!

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I was being ironic and well - deflecting attention from what is a bullying thread. No offense to John, etc - these things are boringly vicious.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

GRRRRAAAAAWWWWW!

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

When did Geir give us kitten-based photoshopping? I think that settles it, as if settling were needed!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I pick Momus because his photoshop skillz are ace!

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with Millar and Suzy here. this thread is very kindergarten playground.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(Notice the subliminal 'MOMUS' written in tabby fur. That took hours of work, that did.)

GRRAAAAAWWWWWW!

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

For the love of God. Geir doesn't even post on ILE.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Also he has chubby cheeks. And also Modern Painters isn't flying out next week to do a four page feature on him.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

god bless us every one

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 26 April 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, OK, you guys are right, I'm sorry. Whilst shopping at the hardware store just now all I could do was think "gee, wasn't that a juvenile thread to start." It's just that -- well, when the subjects of gender relations or sexual violence arise, I can always depend on Momus to say something that pisses me off. Not "pisses me off=provokes me to think about the question in a new way!" and not "pisses me off=interrogates my most basic assumptions!" which are actual effects in whose teaching virtues I strongly believe. What I can depend on Momus for is outright misogyny cloaked in Grove-Pressed intellectual trappings, and I let my distaste for this get the better of me when I started this thread. I'd still say that Momus thinks through his positions with about as much self-reflection as Geir, though.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

shit, man--why are you hardware shopping while the games are on?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil and Momus are prompty invited to my Iraq shaped bed.

damn, you make me laugh and horny.

BurmaKitty on the 'rape murder' thread. Clearly her misogynometer is out of order tonight.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(The Grove Press is hott!)

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i choose geir due to the absence of melody and harmony from momus' music

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

its a pretty depressing choice.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

We mud wrestle for your pleasure, oh cruel ilXor squires.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"a girl laughed at my joke, and found me attractive" = "I am, therefore, not misogynist"

this is exactly what I'm talking about and is rhetorically nondifferent from "Anti-semitic? Some of my best friends are Jewish!"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, okay, counsel for the prosecution, over to you. Trial by ILX! The motion: Momus is a misogynist.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

And also Modern Painters isn't flying out next week to do a four page feature on him.

You go, girl!

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Exhibit A:

hstencil and Momus are prompty invited to my Iraq shaped bed.

damn, you make me laugh and horny.

BurmaKitty on the 'rape murder' thread. Clearly her misogynometer is out of order tonight.

-- Momus (nic...), April 26th, 2003.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm off to start a thread called TS: J0hn Darn1elle vs. Fun.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

that is bullshit.

and I will take J0hn Darn1elle

mookieproof (mookieproof), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

fun vs momus' definition of fun

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(Nick, rising to bait = sinking to level)

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

suzy OTM

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I'm writing an essay about photograblogs right now. Does anybody know any blogs consisting almost entirely of photos, updated daily and full of beauty?

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

www.showstudio.com might link, also try artnet.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

No, no, it's got to be ordinary folks, not photo pros!

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, bloggers with digital cameras. Like at photoblog.org.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Try Gareth's, it's likned at FT.

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(or linked, even.)

suzy (suzy), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Gareth's is all words. I want people who communicate with pictures.

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 26 April 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

(just joking of course!)

:-)

Tad (llamasfur), Sunday, 27 April 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha ha.

i like john's music better than momus' (though admittedly i havent heard a whole of momus either), but when it comes to discussion, momus is always more interesting. john can be so puritanical when it comes to politics, etc it's hilarious. i still remember writing somewhere in Puncture or something how he felt better hanging out with his vegan friends than with nonvegans, making me and my friend laugh for weeks, both of us making Darnielle jokes all of the time.

singer-songwriter FITE!

hey you guys are both "new folk" right, so why don't you get along?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 27 April 2003 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably for the same reason Nas and Jay-Z hate each other.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Momus doesn't know who those people are Ally

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 27 April 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 27 April 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Not humanity, I'll tell you that.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 05:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, but they could take each other out.

Momus epic essay on Photoblogging now online!

Thank goodness I didn't entirely waste Saturday, despite being a bloody flapping cockrel in someone's cockfight!

CCCCOOOOOCKKKKADOOOOOODDDDDLLLEEEEE DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That's really annoying, Momus.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

What, the essay, or having to be a cockrel in someone's cockfight?

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

[HOW DAN READS THE AVERAGE ILE POST]

"Thank goodness I didn't... waste... a... flapping cock... in someone's... DOOOOOO... DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

You need to improve your skimming skills, Danny Boy.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Picasso quote is good.

Sonny Tremaine (Sonny), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"You need... r...imming skills, Danny Boy."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my God, Dan is completely on fire.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Sunday, 27 April 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

(The other possibility was "You need... imp...[-]...r...imming skills, Danny Boy." but I didn't see that until just now.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The imp pervs of the world thank you. The rest of us weep and tremble.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"The imp pervs... w...ank you."

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't they always?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

this is one of the best threads to start at the end and work your way upwards. (i look forward to the obligatory Dan-ization)(wankle rotary engine).

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan has Tourette's Syndrome now!

It's brought on by electrons ping ponging around the world only to rush across our screens in black and white and impersonate a piece of paper with writing on it. That's not their destiny, you see. Their destiny is so much more, and Dan's subliminals are glimpses of that.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 27 April 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Try to make something dirty out of this, Perry.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

"T...i...t...s...".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think that is wise territory on which to try to call Dan out, Ally!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

How long did that take you to do that?!

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly, about 10 seconds.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(as opposed to well folks????)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

(... dammit. Well, "folks pee dirty" just didn't sound as good.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 April 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's entirely appropriate that a Momus vs Geir Hongro thread should degenerate into a pissing contest between well and ill folks.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 27 April 2003 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's some classical music to civilize you all.

Momus (Momus), Sunday, 27 April 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's less a contest than a tandem effort. Pissing contests are silly, it all sounds the same on the splash.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 27 April 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

(Has everyone forgotten about Tae-bo already? *sob*)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 27 April 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't. The idea of Billy Blanks as a ho got me in stitches.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 27 April 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread made me go and listen to some Mountain Goats songs. Pretty good actually. In fact they remind me of early Momus -- all tightly wound-up and bitter, strummy and clever. That's why he doesn't like me, it's self-loathing!

Momus (Momus), Monday, 28 April 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)
