i challenge you to prove me wrong AND maintain full respect for the truth at all times

mark s (mark s), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin Skidmore doesn't like ANY veg (or so he claims.) I only like frozen peas - mushy peas are satan's snot

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

frozen peas after defrosting and cooking?

if not ur hardcore

peas = not veg obv

mark s (mark s), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

obv NOTHING sinkah!! i suppose u will tell me now that they are 'seeds' or somesuch (i had an argument abt this with someone at the end of last year. we were in a very small, very hot room and the only window was the patio door which was locked shut and peas = veg!)

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

All we are saaaying etc.

Frühlingsmute (Wintermute), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i should note that i like them fine (cept when mushy). but it's one of those old, (once?) cute family stories that many years ago my then pint-sized half-siblings (this makes them sound like aliens or products of genetic manipulation or something) would routinely greet the small green round things on their plate with the tortured lament (this is the most popular form of lament incidentally) of "taff taff pease??" (trans: "do we have to have peas?").

BUT: they are not in this beeyotch so null & void.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Mushy canned peas are not very good, frozen ones are ok, fresh ones from the garden (so long as they aren't left too long - they can get woody and bitter) are almost the perfect food.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh to be podding peas in the garden.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Patsy Kensit to thread!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 26 May 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I dislike peas a great deal. I can only eat them if they're in a curry, because everything else masks the flavour a fair bit.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 26 May 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I like peas. Freshly-picked peas, straight from the pod, eaten raw. Lovely.

I like mushy peas, too. I used to call them 'mucky bees' when I was tiny.

C J (C J), Monday, 26 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sugar snap or snow peas (fresh or good-quality frozen), just lightly steamed = ambrosial.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 26 May 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I will eat them in a pot pie or as part of a stew or in fried rice. If you throw peas on a plate in front of me like I'm supposed to enjoy them because of their intrinsic goodness, well, fuck that.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 26 May 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

luna (luna.c), Monday, 26 May 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Peas are gross. That is why in the Exorcist the girl throws up green pea soup. Peas are of the devil.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 26 May 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I hated peas until last year. (My mother: YOU ARE THE ONLY CHILD IN THE WORLD WHO DOESN'T LIKE PEAS)

I used to try them occassionally to see if I still hated them. Then I ate some late last year because my flatmate had cooked and I didn't want to be rude. They were okay. I wouldn't go as far as saying I liked them, but I no longer pick them out of things. (Trying to pull peas out of a samosa = time comsuming and messy).

Anna (Anna), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic: raw sugarsnap peas, steamed peas, mushy peas, frozen peas (eaten frozen), pea soup with leftover ham, Rasam, and Saya Snow Pea Crisps.

Dud: I'm not keen on eating snow peas with a fork or chopstick. Kind of a pain in the ass.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

mark do u eat p's w/ a fork or spoon or yr fingers???

mark s (mark s), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I eat my peas with honey
I've done it all my life
It makes the peas taste funny
But it keeps them on the knife

C J (C J), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

you could make that a classic death metal song by replacing "peas" with "women"

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 26 May 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

fresh, frozen, canned, whatever, peas are so completely delicious and classic - the deep-fried wasabi peas that the Japanese make are proof that peas are probably capable of anything, like saving the world and stuff

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 26 May 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

YES!!! I love wasabi peas. They're a great snack for the office since almost no one ever wants any.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 26 May 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

peas in curry, soup, etc. = taste good. fresh peas out of the pod = do not taste good but i will pretend they do and eat them anyway. plain cooked peas = just bad in all respects.

Maria (Maria), Monday, 26 May 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Peas are good, wtf? I'll eat like a giant bowl of peas. Well, not really but I have and it wasn't so bad.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 26 May 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Hrm! I actually tend not to like 'em in curries or anything like that. They often seem to ruin the texture amongst the bolder elements... on their own and/or fresh out of the garden they're A-OK to me, but mix 'em arbitrarily into dishes and they're just these thick lumps of bitterness.

gazuga (gazuga), Monday, 26 May 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan OTM, wasabi peas are the Ultimate Snack!

Aaron A., Monday, 26 May 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

wasabi peas are the light menthols of the snack world

Millar (Millar), Monday, 26 May 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't much care for fresh peas plainly boiled or whatever, and as that's the only way I'd had them as a kid I thought I hated peas. Then an italian bf's mum made peas that were sort of sauteed in onion and olive oil then boiled a little... and they tasted great. So now I like them. I like mushy peas too - they're really hard to get here, but you can't beat a pie floater (mushy peas or pea soup in a bowl with a home made meat pie perched on top, you cut it up and smoosh it into the soup.... mmm...)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 26 May 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

peas = grebt

but I really don't like sweetcorn. Yucky! However, I'll happily eat a corn on the cob. Why does sweetcorn taste so different when it's off the cob?

dog latin, Monday, 26 May 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

The sugars deteriorate once the corn is taken off of the cob? They often pack corn off the cob with added sugar to keep the taste up.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 26 May 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i blame the jolly green giant

mark s (mark s), Monday, 26 May 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My mother: YOU ARE THE ONLY CHILD IN THE WORLD WHO DOESN'T LIKE PEAS

Your mother is a damned freak. Hated yer basic cooked-peas-as-side-dish from when I was small and still do. The taste is just horrible, yech. Crispy peas-in-pods, though, in salads or stir fry or the like, are most delicious.

I hear Gareth hates beans.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I like them frozen; they're like chilly little candies.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm covered in beeeeeeeeeees.

;)

As for peas, I'll only eat them if they're freshly shelled or if they're the frozen kind that you defrost. Canned peas = major ick. In fact, mushy peas of any kind are enough to make a fresh pea fan cry. I do like snow peas and sugarsnap peas in a stir fry, too.

Another thing that makes me sad is the pure horridness of canned green beans. Fresh green beans that are lightly sauteed in a little butter and olive oil is such culinary heaven that it is so heartbreaking to think of how dire canned green beans taste. It's as if the product has been boiled so much that all of its soul, all of its personality has been killed.

But I digress.

Regular peas are brilliant. Canned peas? Nuh-uh.

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU DO!

m-ry-nn (m-ry-nn), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Canned peas are foul any way you look at it. Fresh peas are quite nice, especially when cooked with something - my (Italian) father makes peas in a similar way to Tracye's former boyfriend's mum, and they are very good indeed.

Mushy peas are the worst things in the world, and if Mr Darn13ll3 likes *them* then veganism is more sad and desperate than I'd ever thought possible.

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok I don't hate them anymore, I'll eat them and I don't pick them out of things and fling them at my brother anymore (okay, I do, but I only see him once every few years and anyway, he started it), but I wouldn't really eat them on my own. Except in stir fry. Go figure.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 07:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Peas are filthy - there's something about them that makes me gag before they get anywhere near my mouth.

I never understood the point of putting peas in curry (vegetable curry excluded, naturally).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I made blue cheese and pea risotto on Saturday and it rocked.

Mushy peas are fantastic, and the elevation of them to godlike status comes with the pea fritter, oh for one of those right now.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

What you want is the ROASTED PEAS that are like dried edamame with 8203579874395843tons of salt and MSG that you can get for supercheap in Chinatown. I ate a whole packet in about two seconds and spent the rest of the day curled up into a small ball of BODYSHOCK.

I like peas! But not mushy peas DESPITE being from the NORTH. Ugh ugh skool dinner tastic. I wd like some peas tonight I think. With some butter on them! And some mashed potato and SOSSIDGE cor what a good idea.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Pea bacon an avocado salad.

fry up some chooped up bacon, peel and slice ad avocado or two, steam the peas. Mix together, juice a lime into the sald and degrease the pan with lime juice and poor that over. Garnish with mint if you like.

Fresh peas are just comming into season for that extra sweetness. However, peas probably freeze the best of all vegetables.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I always thought I was quite lucid (FRiday night apart)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

OH MAN roast potatoes, peas and FISHFINGERS. Want want want.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i just remembered this:

at school we had a teacher who used to pick crumbs and stuff of the table and pop them in his mouth during lunch (ie bits that had fallen from his own plate)

we sabotaged a pea by removing the innards from the shell and filling it full of mustard and pepper, then gently rolled it next to his plate when he was looking the other way

sure enough a minute later he picked it up and popped it in his mouth — big grimace ensues, quickly suppressed... he can't even say "yuk" as it wd mean drawing to everyone's attention that he'd picked it off the table

anyway it wz tremendously extremely hilarious 30 years ago

(i saw him in the shrewsbury M&S food section abt 10 months ago, so no lasting harm wz done)

(in fact quite the opposite: he looked EXACTLY the same, as if no time had passed!!)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate peas. They are nasty green balls of evilness.

liz (lizg), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

the pea fritter is the thing for you then, a huge ball of mushy peas, dipped in batter and deep fried. You wouldn't believe how much I'm craving one right now.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ew, mushy peas are even more disgusting than the non-mushy variety!

liz (lizg), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all about the batter though Liz, the batter. I've never seen one in London either, whichh is sad, yet I have in Bournemouth and Chesterfield

chris (chris), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: fresh peas, sugarsnap peas, peas in curry or risotto (chris can I get the recipe for that blue cheese/pea risotto???)

Destroy: mushy peas, pea fritters, tinned peas, frozen peas eaten frozen as snack and absent-mindedly dropped all over floor (known as 'peas a la matt')

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

To slightly adapt the wisdom of Mr C: "Peas are good, peas are good..." damn, that's the point at which meter fails me...
Only vegetables I would eat as a kid (and in the broadest culinary sense they ARE vegetables Mr Sinker(!); pulses if being all scientifically accurate, like, I believe)... have funny stories about hiding veg when a nipper... prob best for another thread...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

in the broadest culinary sense ketchup is a vegetable

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

but it so isn't!!! aren't tomatoes fruits?

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it goes by meat = it is vegetables "in the broadest culinary sense"

i am arguing that peas are not vegetables, this puts ketchup way in the clear (= nearly pudding)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ailsa it's an american joke in that reagan declared ketchup a vegetable so that presto all school lunches now included a vegetable if they came with ketchup.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i am so not american...i feel v stupid now :(

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, don't feel stupid -- it was over twenty years ago.

The Wikipedia says: "In 1981, Ronald Reagan's budget director, David Stockman, proposed classifying ketchup as a vegetable as part of Reagan's budget cuts for federally financed school lunch programs (it would make it cheaper to satisfy the requirements on vegetable content of lunches). The suggestion was widely ridiculed and the proposal was killed."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently during the Clinton administration, the US Agriculture Department actually succeeded in getting salsa classified as a vegetable for school lunch programs.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i am v.old and so r my jokes

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

So if ketchup is almost pudding, then isn't salsa almost salad?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

And really, isn't ketchup closer to toothpaste?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin Skidmore doesn't like ANY veg (or so he claims.)

I am all in favour of chips and crisps, so this is plainly not true. Peas are vegetables in that they are not meat, dairy or grain, which are the only other kinds of food. Actually on that basis chocolate must be a vegetable, which makes me virtually a vegetarian.

Anyway, I don't really like peas but I certainly don't hate them, and can eat themm. I think I was mainly put off them by my mother's cooking methods - cook slowly on low heat for far too long, then leave for a while, uncovered, to dry out and cool down before serving. This was her approach to pretty much all food.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Chocolate = dairy.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

They're green and vegetablearians can eat them = in the broadest culinary sense: vegetable!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yes i didn't disagree with you, i just think the very broadness of the sense you are invoking obliterates the subtlety of my other, more accurate sense, in which they are clearly NOT vegetables

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand how they are not veg if green and a staple part of a vegetablearian diet? Please explain the nuances of your opinion Mark. Ketchup, neither vegetable, fruit nor pudding = condiment!! ;-)

sprouts not a lot bigger but deffo veg - sweetcorn not veg due to not being green or a carrot

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Chocolate is the perfect blend of vegetable and dairy, but the distinctive sine qua non ingredient must be the vegetable part.

Except as far as my diet is concerned the main food groups are meat, chocolate, crisps and ice lollies.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The term legume is derived from the Latin word legumen (with the same meaning as the English term), which is in turn believed to come from the verb legere "to gather." English borrowed the term from the French "légume," which, however, has a wider meaning in the modern language and refers to any kind of vegetable; the English word legume being translated in French by the word légumineuse.

A legume (pronounced /ˈlɛɡjuːm/) in botanical writing is a plant in the family Fabaceae (or Leguminosae), or a fruit of these specific plants.

Grain legumes are cultivated for their seeds, and are also called pulses. The seeds are used for human and animal consumption or for the production of oils for industrial uses. Grain legumes include beans, lentils, lupins, peas, and peanuts.[2]

I eat my peas with honey
I've done it all my life
It makes the peas taste funny
But it keeps them on the knife

Tenille: Tell me, young man, what do you want out of life?
Homer: I want peas!
Tenille: We all want peace! But it's always just out of reach.
Homer: Uh huh?
Tenille: So, what's the best way to get peace?
Homer: With the knife!
