Dove: better chocolate--really smooth, melts on tongue evenly and has a really nice lingering aftertaste--with so-so-ish ice cream; convenient stick to eat with

Klondike: so-so chocolate, rather good ice cream (again, the vanilla lingers nicely in a way the chocolate doesn't); no stick, which actually makes eating it a bit more of an adventure, more involving, if you will, in the trying not to drop the fucking thing on the ground sense

winner: Klondike. Dove's chocolate pleases the palate more, but Klondike provides the better overall experience

yeah, Slutsky's right about pure junk food rush. I'll take that "prole" comment back. I used to work for a damn good ice creamery in Minneapolis (where I am right now, actually, in town for the Lifter Puller reunion shows) called Sebastian Joe's, making ice cream and cones--one of the best jobs I ever had, actually, especially eating each of something like 75 flavors as they came out of the machines, soft serve. that kind of ruined me on cheaper ice cream.

I think what gets me w/the Choco Taco is the exquisite waffling of the "shell"--it's just a basic waffle type thing, but the way it feels on the tongue, a kind of soft serration, is really effective, in a way I don't traditionally get w/waffle cones, probably because w/cones the waffling is smoothed out after being in your hands for the 3-5 minutes it takes to eat the ice cream on top. also, like, dude, it's a fucking ice cream taco, which automatically makes it the coolest foodstuff on earth.

that may be my problem--I'm not a big fan of chocolate chips qua chocolate chips--the ones shaped like tiny Hershey's Kisses*. too much and/or too little at the same time. the stuff I like best chipwise are the flaky chocolate shavings that Seb Joe's (and lots of others, e.g. Kemps, which I grew up on) use in their to die for raspberry chocolate chip. along w/Oreo, vanilla, chocolate, and a banana/caramel/choc chip combo whose name I'm blanking, the raz-chip was their top seller. my favorite, though, is the Marionberry D.C. Nut--marionberrys from Oregon, various nuts, and a really offensive pun (to some people--had a few walkouts on that at the store, strangely)

I can see what you mean, and were said chips any bigger than they are (they're quite small) I might have a problem. their very smallness makes them delightful to the tongue.

but I enjoy those shavings--I assume you mean the little rectangular chocolate bits?--I had a caramelée at Bilboquet, a really great place in an adjoining neighbourhood, made with caramel ice cream, chocolate shavings and pralines the other day. I nearly broke down and cried.

yes, the rectangular bits. working at the commisary we had enormous bags of those things for the ice cream (each batch yielded 4-5 two-gallon buckets) but they weren't very good unless they were in the ice cream. such is the fate of semisweetness.

as far as crushed candy bars go, it's all about the Heath bar for me. Butterfinger is a distant second. does anything else crush as well as those? most of the candy bars I know are on the gooey and/or chocolatey end of things, which lends itself to melting more than crushing.

the best ice cream sandwich by a mile are those nestlé toll house sandwiches that tend to cost about $2.50. they have something like 1,000 calories as well. but the cookies are always super-chewy, almost doughy, and the cookie dough ice cream inside is really good. actually the cookies are so doughy, and the ice cream just hard enough, that the whole sandwich has very nearly the same consistency thus none of the messy "i bit into my ice cream sandwich and broke off a piece of cookie but now some ice cream has been left uncovered and will fall to the floor if i don't bite it right now oh jesus what did i do help me please" phenomenon. my roommates and i used to stock up on these when they were on sale at the local liquor store. they are k-decadent and just, oh, my gosh, they are so good.

I think what gets me w/the Choco Taco is the exquisite waffling of the "shell"--it's just a basic waffle type thing, but the way it feels on the tongue, a kind of soft serration, is really effective, in a way I don't traditionally get w/waffle cones, probably because w/cones the waffling is smoothed out after being in your hands for the 3-5 minutes it takes to eat the ice cream on top. also, like, dude, it's a fucking ice cream taco, which automatically makes it the coolest foodstuff on earth.

Phish Food B&J is pretty damn good--I can even get past the horrendous association. However, I was born a Chunky Monkey (banana ice cream w/choc and nut chunks) man and I'll die a Chunky Monkey man: they'll have to pry it away from my cold dead hands.

yes, the Madison store gets their stock from Seb Joe's. I used to help stock them--they drive to Mpls every couple months or so, whenever they run out of stock, come in for the weekend, and drive back Monday morning with a truckload of ice cream. Really nice guys.

I think they're pretty classic too, as long as they're reasonably fresh. Which reminds me of another thing--I was at a pizzeria last month & they offered an orange sorbet in the skin of the fruit. Our interest was piqued so we ordered one. Turned out to be a pre-manufactured (it was even in sealed plastic) thingy, and kind of over-frozen: bitter sorbet in a really cold orange peel. It was kind of weird (especially the fact that they served us something in its original packaging on a plate).

Dove Bars try to hard for the "Oh, I'm a fancypants elegant sophisticate named Dirk/Buffy with a pet poodle" image, and consequently, each Dove Bar is about the size of the H key on my keyboard and costs about $406. Because everyone knows that if something is Dirk/Buffy-worthy, it has to be really small and really expensive. When really, Dove Bars are only pseudo-"Oh, I'm a fancypants elegant sophisticate named Dirk/Buffy with a pet poodle" because they really aren't THAT good (they are good, but not worth the price and image).

Klondike Bars, on the other hand, don't bullshit. They're good-sized, great-tasting, and good-priced. And every flavor variety they have is mmm mmm good. Except Neapolitan, which is the dirty ass of all ice cream flavors.

I hate Choco Tacos because I had a nasty one one time and it almost made me gag. I couldn't finish it; I ended up eating half of it and throwing the rest away, because I could not stand it.
