Bob Six (bobbysix), Sunday, 15 June 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now i am listening to Led Zep-How The West Was won. But I spent 50 bucks on CD's today and i am gonna listen to them all and read the Times cuz i am home alone and life is a breeze apparently.
Here's what i got for my 50 bucks amurican:
Aztec Camera-Knife+that e.p. with the live tracks and Jump on it($6.99)(although,i still kinda miss my 12 inch with that weird-ass "All I Need Is Everthing" re-mix on it)
Vision Of Disorder-Still($1.99) um, hardcore music. even straightedge probably. and when i see pictures of characters like VOD i always hear steve ignorant in my head screaming, "bully boys out fighting, it's just the same old game". at least i think it was steve ignorant.
Screw Theory Volume IV-Various($1.99) This shit scares me and i don't know why i bought it. mebbe cuzza the picture of a skull and a pitbull and a bulldog sitting on an american flag on the cover? i dunno. it's just creepy what they do to shabba ranks and coolio.
The Sundays-reading,writing,and arithmetic(99 cents) so sue me. it was 99 cents and it's sunday!
Mo Money Crime Family-Life Of A Hustler($1.99) veeeeeeeeerrrrrryyyyy funky ya know. and very weedy as well. especially "Amneeshia" with the Hemp Cartel and Flesh N Bone
Wake Ooloo-Hear No Evil($3.99)
KMD-Black Bastards($1.99)
Th Faith Healers-Imaginary Friend($4.99) and i found my fave faith healers, you know, the one with mother sky on it, for $1.99 a couple weeks ago at the same store! i was happy.
So So Def Bass All-Stars-Vol.3($1.99) this is good cuz it has INOJ's version of "Time After Time" on it and the Yin Yang Twins doing "True City Thugs" and you never know when that might come in handy.
Laika-Lost In Space($7.99) that's the double best/b-side/peel thingy and that's for my maria cuz she likes Laika.
Red Snapper-Making Bones($2.99)
Raincoats-S/T($5.99) that's also for maria cuz the other day she said "Hey, don't you have any raincoats, how come you don't have any raincoats?" and i live to serve.
My Dying Bride-Like Gods Of The Sun($4.99)
Let's Active-Big Plans For Everybody($1.99)
And there you have it. and that's were you will find me.
oh wait. i almost forgot. i bought a cool Australian White Zombie tour single from 1996 that comes with a cute little White Zombie pin for $1.99. I couldn't resist. and there is always ebay.

It's weird, I only ever heard "Centipede" the once or twice in upstate New York in the early eighties, but I still vividly remember the chorus.

Earlier, Primal Scream's set from Witnness last year, which has settled the Glastonbury "Primal Scream vs REM" debate for me: clearly if they get all their ducks in a row and Bobby remembers to take the right pills at the right time, they can make the best sound in the world.

Now, Eve's Eve-olution, which I listened to a couple of times before but never properly, it appears. It sounds more like her first album, and not the "whole bunch of Ruff Ryders (also featuring Eve)" second album. I approve.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 15 June 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha! Apart from "Hail To The Thief", I have been listening to my greatest mix set of all time! All mixed on ACID Pro, it's all the tunes that got me dancing about like a loon, banging on pub tables or cycling around at top speed listening on a walkman:

1. Red Rat - Blaze the Weed
2. DJ Quantum & Ed Solo - Hear Dis
3. Cutty Ranks - Six Million Ways To Die (Jungle Mix)
4. M Beat feat General Levy - Incredible / (played over the top of) Spectre - Covert Dub
5. Andy C & Shimon - Body Rock
6. Sinthetix - Liar
7. Aphex Twin - Cock/Ver10
8. Marc Smith & Safe'n'Sound - Identify The Beat
9. The DJ Producer - Rude Attitude
10. Johnny Violent - North Korea Goes Bang
11. Hellfish - Turntable Savage
12. Venetian Snares - Befriend A Childkiller
13. SL2 - On A Ragga Tip
14. DJ Assault - Ass n Titties
15. Riot Control - Abba Gabba
16. Feedle - Transmission Zero
17. (Hidden Track) Manowar - Carry On

Fucking class if I do say so meself

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 15 June 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: "Centipede". I've been trying to get it off Limewire for months! It finally came through today. I used to always get the melody mixed up with "Freakazoid". Not anymore. Especially since the "Centipede" lyrics have such a creepy Michael edge: "In the quiet of the night/Is when the snake is in the crawlin'/And the moon starts to glow then disappear/When the time is really right/Is when the centipede is crawlin'/You'll be crying in the night/So many tearsAnd crawlin' like a centipede/Centipede!

Now it reminds me more of "Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight".

I also downloaded E'Nuff Z'Nuff's "New Thing" which I've been trying to get for even longer. I'm ecstatic!

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 15 June 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Was listening to Nayyara Noor and Farida Khanum. I liked the first Nayya Noor song, but it kind of went downhill after that. I skimmed the Farida Khanum CD. Don't have time to listen to it now plus it's too late, but I think I like her.

Oops, The Essence Of J. Rawls is a bit low key and unspectacular, all cool jazzy grooves and stuff, and I had downloaded the best of it, but I do like it. If you find it pretty cheap, as I did, I'd certainly say it's worth grabbing.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I really need to take Hail to the Thief off. I've listened to it thrice in a row now. I had hoped I wouldn't like it this much; alas, I love it. I wonder if I would like them so much if they didn't always release albums at times when my life is really fucked up and I'm in horrible moods?

Also listened to today: Beck's Mutations, Rahsaan Roland Kirk's Blacknuss, a '94 Morphine bootleg (a-friggin-mazing), and the song "Anger Management" offa Lovage like 4 times

Ever since Ally started liking the Smiths nothing surprises me anymore. (I'd always sort of assumed she was bullshitting about not liking Zeppelin.)

Now I'm listening to a Canadian Electronic Ensemble concert from Feb 1978. It's awesome - I wish I could get everyone here to listen to it.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Late 70's and early 80's was a good time for experimental music. (That's sort of a joke I make with myself (ha ha). I realized lately that I know a lot of material from that time, and even like a fair amount of it, but that just happens to be the time I was listening to it the most.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 18 June 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That could also be duck porn, though.

Mellow-garde: Fred Frith (The Clearing), Hans Reichel (Bonobo Beach), Lou Harrison (Rhymes with Silver). The Frith wasn't really mellow, but it had the right mood or something. Then I put on some Oum Kalthoum but it was making me edgy and not what I wanted, so I took it off and put some more Lou Harrison on (keyboard stuff).

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 20 June 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Lots of things based on ILx recommendations. Right now it's the Crydarmoure Waves II album. Earlier, it was Manitoba, because I was trying elaborate why I'm liking it when all the right people seem to be hating it and everybody else seems to like it for reasons very different from mine.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 20 June 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And I want to give it up for M. Ward's "Vincent O'Brien" because it hits me from left field.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 20 June 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm I listened to the True Blue album yesterday. How does that album get dissed when it has Papa D.P., Open Your Heart, Live to Tell, La Isla Bonita, True Blue... and even the filler is kinda charming.

My jukebox just played Neil Young's "Change Your Mind" followed by the Boredoms' "Super Are" and it was a perfect 1-2 (so I noted it on the mixtape segue thread).

Aaron A., Friday, 20 June 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ringo moya, franco et son t.p.o.k. jazz, don ellis

The filler's also kinda horrible if I'm in the wrong mood, though. PDP leaves me really cold, apart from the strings, but OYH and LTT are SUBLIME, man. And yes TB is a cute song. Dunno about LIB.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 20 June 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, yeah, I skip Papa every time. I honestly like every other song, though, with OYH being my favorite Madonna song ever and LTT a certain classic too. I like the bridge on the otherwise asinine LMtWG'R.

Aaron A., Friday, 20 June 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when "Papa Don't Preach" came out it was the first Madonna song I didn't immediately like.

Listening to the Eagles' The Long Run for the first time in years and it's just as good as I remembered, although the worst song ("King of Hollywood" - and it's really bad) is unfortunately also the longest song. Good record besides, tho.

What's up w/ the Moodymann, Jay? Just not interesting?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 20 June 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

There's way too much Najee-ish soprano sax wanking (track 2) and not as much the dark machine funk that "Forevernevermore" had so much of. And what machine funk there is just sounds half assed, like KDJ got bored with trying to create a solid, compelling groove or track. But this is after only one listen to the album. I'll betcha I'll grow to love it in two days' time!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 20 June 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The CEE is a Toronto institution - their current incarnation has a homepage here. They play live electroacoustic compositions, do some improv too I believe. This set was really pleasing - a lot of pulsing synth farts, some counter-rhythmic percussive stuff, some sort of fusion-y synth bits, then totally spacey bits with voice samples.

I'm listening to Susie Ibarra-Flower after Flower. Also today

Parliament - Funkentelechy vs the Placebo Syndrome

a David Mott concert from 1980 - My friend in high school once said to me "I heard the strangest music on CKCU (Carleton's community/campus station) last night. It sounded like saxophones trapped in a cage struggling to get out." That would be a good description of this set.

Husker Du - Zen Arcade

Dr N Ramani & Trichy Sankaran - Lotus Signatures

and caught some videos on MuchVibe - DJ Shadow - "Walkie Talkie"
Lauryn Hill - "Everything Is Everything"
Black-Eyed Peas - "Where Is the Love"
DJ Format

Caught the tail end of the Queen concert on MuchMoreMusic last night, which was amazing.

It looks like I'll be sticking around and listening to a lot more music tonight and over the weekend as I can no longer go on my Niagara Falls bike trip after a car ran into the back of my bike last night. I'm not terribly injured but I'll be pretty sore for at least a few days, it seems. Oh well. Could have been worse.

Are you freaking out over the stereo panning, Sundar?

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 21 June 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Distant humming cars, soft ticking noises, indistinguishable voices carrying from some strange distance. I love how life itself sounds.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 June 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Bryan. The guitars are surprisingly 'noisy' and ballsy for Yes, from what I know. Then I listened to "Then", which was also really good. Now it's on "Everyday". I burnt a bunch of the 1st disc from the box set. How are the first two albums?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 21 June 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter Banks was the guitar player and he was terribly underrated. The first album is mostly crap except for "Survival" which has a classic riff; Time and a Word (from which "Then" was taken) is great.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 21 June 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tumleweed's 'Galactaphonic'. rawk on.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Saturday, 21 June 2003 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No way is the first album crap! "Beyond and Before" is brilliant! Chris Squire brought it to the group from an earlier psych band he was in, and it's just a perfect pop song, full of shimmering, affecting melodies.

Also, "Yesterday and Today" is a short but beautiful somg, and Anderson really sounds wonderful on it. Oh yeah, and the cover of "I See You" is cool too, except for the lame guitar solo. Man, Bryan I can't believe you dissed that record! Peter Banks does kind of suck though. Too much lame Bach crap. And not even close to the way Richie Blackmore does that kinda shit.

See it's funny, I think Time and A Word is horrible. all those orchestrations ruin it for me; i can't get past them. But the first record is aces.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 21 June 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm drunk!) I get past the orchestrations. Both albums are good but I think Time and a Word, in spite of the folly of the inclusion of strings, etc., is still the better album! You know what? They're both really good. Peter Banks was more progressive than Steve Howe, though he was perhaps less technically gifted.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 21 June 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Origin - Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 21 June 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

ha - it's cool Bryan, you're allowed not to like the first one! I just really dig it. I just listened to "Beyond and Before"; it's amazing how eager and assured they sound, it just radiates. I love the way the just lay out the blueprint for the entire history of the band right from the beginning: Squire's bass announcing the first track, mixed on an equal par with the rest of the group; Anderson's sensitive vocals; Bruford playing at this juncture with a light, dancing touch. The snare sound achieved on "Beyond and Before" is perfect - I want to live inside it! WHo the fuck produced this? Paul Clay? Never heard of him!

man I love Yes.

Sundar, how's that Origin record?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 21 June 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, Saturday, 21 June 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

re: Neudonym's rip on GC's "Girls And Boys"

that good charlotte song is anti-boy too, not JUST misogynist (they just complain louder about dumb girls cuz GC is made of boys, and aren't boys ALWAYS more bothered by asshole girls then asshole guys, cuz they don't really WANT anything from asshole guys?). And it's clearer on the album they're talking about the boys and girls they don't get rather than All Girls Everywhere when the song is contrasted with the very, very pro-girl "Riot Girl."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 21 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

In my mind, it's easily the least of his quasi-compilation CDs. Even though it's sequenced wonderfully, it does emit this rather obvious tossed-off quality. Did we really need another version of the Innerzone remix? And why is an Alton Miller track thrown in the middle? I do like the slightly stripped-down version of JAN, despite the fact that he chopped the Mojo-Prince dialogue from the original -- it seems more sharp, direct. I do find myself going back to listen to it. I still disagree with the majority of folks who seem to love it.

I'm probably most upset by the absence of that Sexy Motherfucker track he's done live a couple times. Apparently he had 100 copies of it pressed and only gave it to friends. It's GOT to see the light off day somewhere else. It's too good.

All that said, the new Andres disc on Mahogani is HOT HOT HOT. Also can't wait for the Amp Fiddler album.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 21 June 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Randy Travis, the Mad, Divine, Gogi Grant, Hawkwind, Dujour, Spacemen 3. And the lost rave classics compilation Gareth made for Ethan, the first one.

Josh (Josh), Saturday, 21 June 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the Origin album. I started this largely ignored thread on it when I bought it. It's super-fast, precise technical death with three guys screaming in different registers. Pummeling but exciting. It sort of weirdly has a bit of a sci-fi kind of feel for me sometimes though it avoids progginess.

Now I'm listening to Hail to the Thief repeatedly again. I've just started to notice that the vocals are often off-key but I'm not sure yet if that's bad. Also I've listened to Beck - Midnite Vultures, tracks 1-4, 10;
Tim Hecker - "Introducing Carl Cocks"
Tool - "Reflection"
Worthy Records - Stars from Worthy Skies comp, disc 1

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 21 June 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a phase I think. I used to love this stuff, I sold/taped over it all, and suddenly I miss it a lot.
In that vein, 1000 Homo DJ's, "Hey Asshole" (It just doesn't quit. good thing my puerile sense of humor doesn't either.)
Also Pigface, "Mind Your Own Business" b/c I had 4 versions of this song (Delta 5, Chicks on Speed, Le Shok) until happily discovering there was an industrial one. yay.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

One tries, sir. Currently my head is still aching but in a different way and there are occasional clips of car horns.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like Ned's machinery hum posts because I'm usually at work when I'm reading them (I don't need to be reminded about the hum, the damned hum).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, since I'm embracing silence or more accurately lack of music-composed-as-such those sounds become the ultimate ambient soundtrack in Eno's original formulation (or was that Satie?) -- something you can utterly and completely ignore. But it sounds like your hum is of a more virulent sort.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 22 June 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Cage had an idea?

Enrique's album kicks Journey's Greatest Hits's ass, so I have to assume it's better than some Journey LP. Lots of coulda-been hits on Escape including "Love 4 Fun," "I Love To See You Cry," "One Night Stand," and maybe "She Be The One" (though I hate that title). It's got some weak numbers but it's pretty great dance pop.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 26 June 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still listening to this new Abdelli CD. Again, good but not necessarily great--but definitely good. I like the fact that there are a lot of instrumental solos in it, which makes it, at least in that repect, more traditional sounding than New Moon. On the other hand, I like the delicate synthesizer touches on that album. Before this it was selected tracks from I Love Salsa. I need to look into this Melcochita person, who seems to be quite a good singer. I think he appears at least a couple times on a salsa compilation I just ordered (but I have a feeling it's out of print--it seems like a very ephemeral "DJ's secret" sort of compilation).

Except when they're actually, like, really emotionally involving, and you have to put down the stuff you're editing and just listen. (I just about cried during the "prisoners put on Hamlet" show.)

Today, I'm listening to The North Atlantic's Wires in the Walls.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 28 June 2003 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man. I remember when "Go Insane" was a "world premiere video" on MTV! I thought it was great, Lindsay looking all possessed, probably about the same he is in real life. haha man is that old school. fucking world premiere videos and shit.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 28 June 2003 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

1984, baby. But I don't remember that video. From that year, I mostly remember Prince. Whatever. We're both old.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 28 June 2003 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Lindsay's "Go Insane" was about as big as Peter Wolf's "Lights Out"! Can you believe that shit? There was actually a time when the VJ's like Martha and Nina and whoever would be all like, "Coming up next hour, we are going to have the World Premiere Video of 'Light's Out' by Peter Wolf'!" Like, what did they expect? That little teenyboppers would call up there friends, "hey, the new peter wolf video is coming on!!" Or, oh yeah - Billy Squier's "Rock Me Tonite"! That was a huge-ass "world fucking premiere video". Oh man, MTV was weird.

haha Jody the other day I was looking for my birth certificate and found my Lone Rhino cassette, purchased on a high school-era family road trip through Montana/Wyoming/Colorado that summer. I only listen to the greatest hits CD anymore but now that I have that tape I am filled with power, my car trips will be a lot more interesting from now on.

Twang Bar King is a better and weirder album though.

I've been listening to Martin Gordon's The Baboon in the Basement to finish my review. Last two discs: Frankie J's What's a Man to Do and Caetano Veloso's Cores Nomes, which is so much better than Joe Sixpack or AMG says that it's hardly hilarious at all.

i'm enjoying the WHY? tracks, especially. is there a thread about them somewhere in this... board?

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Fanmail. Why I'm thinking of Beyonce makes no sense beyond a general Destiny's Child/TLC comparison, but for some reason I AM thinking about how this album just works so much better than Beyonce's solo...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Sidewinder by Morton Subotnik. Sounded like mechanical ants eating my brane. Nice. Incredible, what's lying around in AV.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick Southall proclaims to be listening to "the album of the year", but I actually am listening to Album of the Year (by Faith No More). It's SO MUCH BETTER than I remembered it; definitely one of my favorite of their albums now!

Also today: Kool Keith Black Elvis/Lost in Space and Cibo Matto's Stereo Type A

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

oh now Tift Merritt has been usurped by Bon Jovi blaring from other side of office. trying to like it on some level but failing, which is my own kind of triumph. never likeded Bon Jovi at all, but Jon seems like a fine fellow and Richie's wife is still hott in that mannequin/not really sexy way.

oh and Neudonym and nickalicious in "only people who love Stereo Type A scandal"...once again, defenders of the (hyper-intellectualized Japanese-NYC) funk unite!

Neudonym, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Something Dangerous, Natacha Atlas

Absolutely not. "Animal" was even played at the megaFAP and your absence for that prime moment was much bewailed.

Currently a bit of a recent Projekt-fest, first Faith and Disease and now Unto Ashes (who might have just won the 'best cover of "Don't Fear the Reaper" ever' award).

Sommermute (Wintermute), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Duane -

Yeah, I had about the same reaction to the Dickinson album as you (finally got the last third of it!). It didn't seem all that great at first, but it's grown on me. I like the more shambling tracks, like "Wine", "Dixie Fried" and "O How She Dances". The slower stuff doesn't work so well. It reminds me of a Ringo Starr album or something. Still, there's some really nice playing on here (which is the reason I sought it out in the first place - it has a bunch of the same players who made Alex Chilton's 1970, which I love; some great steel playing from Jeff Newman on both records...)

Yeah, Drumming is pretty good. I found it kind of exciting to watch it (or probably just excerpts) performed live.

I'm listening to Grupo Niche: La Danza de la Chancaca. I like the first three songs on the second disc fairly well: Tapando el Hueco, Cali Pachanguero, and Han Cogido la Cosa.

(Not only did I grok "summer album" right off, but I immediately realized Skylarking is one of mine; and then realized that it doesn't feel like summer yet and I'm not sure when it will. This is spring weather!)

Medicine - The Mechanical Forces Of Love

It's good, but doesn't sound so much like a toybox come to life as Manitoba.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 18 July 2003 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not especially enjoying anything I'm listening to, but I think that my mind and senses are dull at the moment. Something from the Ken Burns Thelonious Monk CD (which, here and there, I was enjoying, but then got tired of), some Arabian classical music that has a harsher sort of vocal technique than I prefer, but okay. Trojan Nyabinghi box set. I have a ton of new CDs, but I am, sadly, not in the mood for most of them.

I forgot my Nomad Jukebox at home so i listened to the radio on my way to work. I heard some Jay Z and some other stuff like that and I really liked it. It's the production, I think, as the vocal performances are middling at best. I'm so out of touch.

I'm borrowing a stack of hip-hop and pop CDs to make a "Best of Summer 2002" mix for a function tonight. So far today, I've listened to The Eminem Show and Ludacris, Word of Mouf. What should I listen to next? The choices are: Kylie Minogue, Pink, Britney Spears, and Shakira. (I also borrowed Vanessa Carlton, but I've already determined it's beyond terrible.)
