Well, I've watched Leprechaun I-IV, I pour Guiness into my Lucky Charms at breakfast, and I've been throwing rocks at anyone who walks past my apartment wearing orange. I'm all ready for my big trip to Ireland!

So what is there to do in Dublin? What should I put on my "must see" list?

Sengai, Monday, 14 July 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You really must take a trip to the Ballymun estates.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Natural History Museum. It belongs in a museum itself.

tigerclawskank, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Hugh Lane Gallery. the socialist realist painting of the Dockers is very nice. as is Les Parapluies by Renoir.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Now really attn: Dubliners. Can someone explain to me the strike action being taken by your public transport folks on Friday? Is it true that all transport will continue to run but no money will be taken? If so this is a great work of industrial action gennius.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the, er, ticket.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, free buses, trains and darts for all.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this Friday only? Will Ireland go daytripping mad?

What's the dispute about?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

proposed privatisation of public transport.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Attn: Dubliners. You rock, HARD. Shame I only met two ILx types (Ronan and Lara... Ronan you left at the right time to avoid the disastrous but inevitable slide into ruination) but I just had a rollicking good weekend. Also: the COBRA and Christina Iglesias shows at IMMA are trivvic, as is the thing with the magnifying glasses int he project rooms or whatever they're called.

No ballerinas, TB or glassy marbles were involved and I'll sue anyone who says they were.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I so picked the wrong weekend to return to Navan.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a right weekend to return to navan?

angela (angela), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

AF yes you'd have had a right old laugh, sorry to have missed you (and all you other Dublin types obv) but maybe I'll be back.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you'll be back?? Ha! You left your self respect in the Lord Edward and you're bound to need it sooner or later.

You really must take a trip to the Ballymun estates.

Don't you mean Ballymoooooon?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
So I have a few days in Dublin this week. It's my first time here. I'm looking for any recommendations of things to do, perhaps not just the usual tourist places. Also, if any Dublin ILXors see this and would be interested in FAPing tomorrow evening or Saturday, please speak up here or in e-mail. The e-mail address is real and I will be checking it. Thanks!

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i might be able to pop out for a quick pint if somethings happening on saturday. am workin til half 9 in stillorgan tomorrow so probably wont be out then.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be up for something on Saturday. I pretty much have the day clear for sightseeing and so forth so a quick pint would be easy to manage.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

tomorrow = friday? I might be game for a pint. Saturday not good for me.

I will try and think of things you should go and see and post them later. I'd recommend the Sophie Calle exhibit in the royal hospital, only it finished last sunday.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

we could go for a pint in the Brazen Head, for it is both olde and nice. And for all that tourists go to it, it is nevertheless off the beaten track.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You really must take a trip to the Ballymun estates.

an internet friend is really keen to visit The Mun. Because she is a big Virgin Prunes fan. Or a mentalist.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Friday night would be fine for me too. I could do either that or Saturday or both, depending on what other people can make it to. The Brazen Head looks good. I wouldn't mind going there.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You really must take a trip to the Ballymun estates.

Pronounced 'Ballymooon'.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe I've made the same lame comment I made over a years ago. Perhaps some of you can.

I am about tomorrow but I might be *stressed*. I can't believe I have known Tim Hopkins this long (and that Pavarotti story).

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate, will you be checking mail laToR? I will have to try and think of a time when we should meet and stuff.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I'll be checking e-mail and reading the board tomorrow during the day.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It is funny about Kilian working in Stillorgan.

Lara, I often read old threads and think something, and find that it is the same thing I wrote 3 years ago.

Go and see Clontarf? The Dart breaks down specially to let you off near it.

Myles's house in Blackrock has a cat outside it.

One day I had better go to McDaid's - I am baffled by how it has avoided me so long.

I have just finished me drafts on Behan and (again) Myles!

the finefox, Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

McDaid's is a pub for rugger buggers. Run Away!

Nate, I will send you an e-mail in a bit with my phone number and meetup suggestions.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Got your e-mail. Thanks. My reply is on its way.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to be in Germany but I extend the welcome of Dublin to you.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 August 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I am suggesting meeting Nate at front gate of Trinity at 6.30.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 August 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright, that sounds like a plan. I'm looking forward to meeting you, and any other Dublin ILXors who can make it.

ps - Thanks for the welcome, Ronan. Sorry I missed you on this trip.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 20 August 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I will try to come along too (for a little bit). Where are we planning on going for drinks - I'm presuming alcohol is part of the bargain here?

Welcome welcome indeed.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for the welcome. I'm not sure where is the best place to go for drinks - any suggestions would be welcome, or we could just stroll around until we find a place.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 20 August 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking somewhere like The Palace, because that's where we went with the Pinefox.

To some extent we just need to go somewhere to kill time till Irene gets in from her badger-baiting.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 August 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

there is talk of September 27th

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 20 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this happening NOW?

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Finefox - in a couple of minutes I will slouch from my office down to meet this O.Nate fellow.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

And what Dirty Vicar

Slouches towards Trinity

To be drunk

?

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What is Dublin's weather like?

I am going to want a report on the state of THE PALACE BAR, in CAMDEN STREET, I mean, FLEET STREET.

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ah now, ah now.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The Palace on FLEET STREET is packed so we are going to tha aptly named Temple Bar in Temple Bar. I am about to leave my office. Apparently this O.Nate fellow is American!

Weather: sunny, breezy, bloody cold with a propensity towards rain.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Here, it is a downpour!

I can't believe it is sunny in Dublin. I half wish I were there.

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet they are still in the pub.

It must be good.

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to all who came out for showing me such a fun evening last night. Dublin ILXors are the best. I hope I can come back sometime soon.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 21 August 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

was there a saturday night FAP too?

I am going for more booze now.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 22 August 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

More booze? Where??

the finefox, Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No, unfortunately, there was no Saturday night FAP. I slept in rather late on Saturday (hmm, wonder why?) and frittered away the afternoon in a disorganized fashion and by the time I got to an Internet terminal, it was too late to make any plans or contact anyone.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent to meet you on Friday, Nate! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in the City of Rain.

Pintfox: we were at a wedding reception on Saturday in CLONTARF CASTLE. And we walked all the way home afterwards.

rener (rener), Monday, 23 August 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sorry I didn't make it to the pint-up. I have recently relocated to my parents' house in Swords (near the airport) prior to re-relocating to Laytown. It is hard for me to muster up any energy after the commute these days, although in six months or so I should have it figured out.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 23 August 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Clontarf Castle has a TEMPLARS BAR in it!

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 23 August 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
Anyone up for a mini-fap/drink-fest the evening of Friday the 24th? I'm going to be in town for a couple of days and would be thrilled to have drinks with the friendly ILE folks of Dublin again.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

that's this friday? oooh. maybe... although I am paradoxically a bit skint but also contemplating a trip to the National Concert Hall to see some Stravinsky thing.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ah nuts I am away again! my sister is getting married this weekend.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

what, again?

maybe the rest of us could go out in my new hood, the trendy village quarter! we could take in some tapas at havana and then quaff hearty Guinnesses in the very pub that Clinton had a pint in.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd probably be up for this. i'm not working on friday.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, that sounds pretty good. If it was good enough for Bill, then it's good enough for me.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll see if any of Lara, Rener, or Andrew are on for any of this.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

count me in!

rener (rener), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm about on Friday. I have some people coming over from the UK but the groups could converge (making wide political debate more interesting cos we Dubliners love serious talk, right?).

Nate - have you taken root here??!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it's just another business trip. My company is keeping me going back and forth lately.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 21 September 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

That must be terrible :-)!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the being in Dublin part is nice - but it's kind of a pain to go straight from the office to the plane and then to the other office, without even having a shower or much of a nap in between. But that's just the way the flight schedule works out, so I can't really hold it against them.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I think you should. I've just emailed you my work email and phone number.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry I am not being active on this thread... I am busy at work and stuff.

on friday - how about we meet at 6.00, say at the big arch on Stephen's Green across from the top of Grafton Street?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 23 September 2004 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

you mean Traitor's Gate? (NB: no-one in Dublin apart from leftie mentalists actually calls it that)

rener (rener), Thursday, 23 September 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't be free that early; I'll come and find you later. What about hanging out in Anseo during the evening? Silly choons and nice comfy seats...

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 23 September 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That meeting place sounds good, DV, though I might have trouble getting away that early. Can we say 6:30 instead?

That would be great if you could join us, Lara. I didn't get your e-mail. Did you send it to my yahoo e-mail?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 23 September 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

6.30 is kewl.

Lara, we can meet up by the magic of SMS text messaging. ditto Rener.

Kilian, can you be at the arch at 6.30 or do we need some other arrangement?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 23 September 2004 14:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I sent it to syne_wave@yahoo.com. I'll email that address from work tomorrow. I've sent it again...

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 23 September 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

6.30 is ok by me.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 23 September 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, see you all at 6:30. I got the e-mail this time, Lara. Thanks.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 24 September 2004 08:08 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry folks, something has come up and i may not be able to make it. if i'm not there at half6 on the dot, head on without me...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 24 September 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope you can make it, Kilian. It would be great to meet you.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 24 September 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

exciting.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 24 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

'leftie mentalists'

the finefox, Friday, 24 September 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I am considering visiting Dublin. Probably in November. Is this a good idea. ?.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

november 4th?

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It could be 5th-8th or 18th/19th-22nd. What's good?

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure what it's like here in November, but I think the winters tend to be relatively mild.

For those meeting this evening, I'll probably be there 15 minutes early or so. Things weren't as hectic here as I thought they'd be. I'm leaving now to drop off a few things where I'm staying, then I'll be on my way over.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose it could be 4th, too, actually. Have fun Dubliners!

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I have to do some very important things, so I won't be at the arch till 6.30.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 24 September 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

later - Nate, I hope our lapse into drunken chat about people you've never heard of didn't spell your night. Safe journey!

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 25 September 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I was enjoying it. The only problem was I had to catch a ride to the airport at 7. Thanks for the great hospitality.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 25 September 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I still don't know what's going on, here. Someone enlighten me.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 26 September 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I was talking about our night of booze shame on friday.

when do you think YOU will come to Dublin? the last time someone from Scotland said they were coming over they failed to actually make it.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 26 September 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

people are coming.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I need people to tell me what is happening, and when. The 4th?

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

people, eh?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

that x-post made me seem rude.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

jacques lu cont is playing at the club I am sort of involved with here on the 4th and lauren and I think nick? are coming along. and maybe others too. you should come along! there will be other non jacques lu cont stuff too of course.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 26 September 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm, I see.

Ally C (Ally C), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone i know is on their way home from the match today in dublin. long drive for the losers......

darragh.mac (darragh.mac), Sunday, 26 September 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Even longer one for the winners.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 27 September 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

don't go all GAA on me you FuXoRs. anyway, I've just remembered how last Friday we suddenly discovered that O.Nate had never heard of the Sultans of Ping fc, so we had to sing "Where's Me Jumper" for him.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That's right - thanks for reminding me. I need to remember to look for that on Slsk.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

WHERE'S ME JUMPA!

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god I'm sorry. I think I was sober at that point as well. It was very nice to meet you, o.nate! Your shirt gave you a resemblance to several members of Talking Heads.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry too (for a different set of reasons).

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Redemption is available, in person.

Oh dear, we are all the Dirty Vicar. (afarrell), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't do appearances. Anymore. Since they stole my life. And life's blood.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

They have your shoes? Bastards.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 30 September 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only worried that our rendition of "Where's Me Jumper" will give Nate unreasonably high expectations of the Sultans Of Ping version.

Lara, you must break free from the shackles of The Man! Another Dublin is possible!

rener (rener), Thursday, 30 September 2004 08:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in the Arc Bar in Clondalkin last night. I saw the other Dublin and I didn't like it.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 2 October 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I am certainly coming to Dublin now. HAHA.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

This is going to be a very rum do.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

da do rum rum.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Rum Ba-Ba.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I love a rum baba.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

He's a mellow, yellow feline.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:18 (twenty-one years ago)

[i]I'm only worried that our rendition of "Where's Me Jumper" will give Nate unreasonably high expectations of the Sultans Of Ping version.[/i]

Is there such a thing? Surely one of the greatest songs ever written?

Simon Green (fatmancunian), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Weel, that was fun. And probably still is.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 November 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell all to the person who is reading jealously from her office because she couldn't take the time off work to be there herself!

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 November 2004 10:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The crowd was very enthusiastic, the quite small room was completely packed. This wasn't always a good thing, as there were a couple of convulsions I'd associated more with being in the front few rows of a stadium concert.

The remix of that horrible Gwen Stefani song destroyed the place.

Ronan was a gracious host, and spent a lot of the time "working the room". I wussed out before the end, when I'd have got a chance to see more of him.

Ally C is quite tall and affable. He brought a friend, who denied him immediately.

Nick is nice, and more like a cartoon version of himself everytime I see him (sorry, Nick).

Michael is a geezer, in the classic sense of the word.

Lauren is very quiet and cute. She stayed up front and center looking after Ally&Friend's coats for longer than was entirely healthy. Then I took over, then some enthusiastic blighter nearly broke my nose, so I went in search of Ally. I asked Ronan whether he'd seen Ally about, and he said "No, I'll go look for him". Then I turned to the guy standing next to him, and said "Hello, Ally. Here's your coat!" Then I went home, the end.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 November 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

What Madchen said.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 November 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Was the friend the lesbian?

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 November 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly. (Insert here "must've been" joke).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 November 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

For a minute I thought DC was in Dublin - but no.

Hi, Mr. Farrell.

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I am disappointed, to hear about coats.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 5 November 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I demand more stories.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 5 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

There may be more stories if the drunken talk about going out tonight happens, but unless I hear something definite, your humble nattaror will be on a bus to the family home in about an hour.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Was there a humble photographer too? (not that we don't appreciate narration obv.)

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 5 November 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

No, we are a low tech bunch. Actually Ronan's mate whose name I've unaccountable forgetten yet again had a camera, but I think it's probably mostly photos of Jacques Lu Cont.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 5 November 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally has some interesting photos of people in torture gear. Oh, and a minor Irish celebrity in a Nepalese restaurant.

There was going out last night and some moderate drinking and losing and finding. There will be going out again tonight, I think. Although having a FAP in Dublin is becoming as difficult as having one in Glasgow. Or perhaps it just that we have a Glaswegian here that's making it hard?

Lucy! RJG! Matt! TRY DUBLIN MORE!

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 6 November 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

come back soon, all of you! and more of you.

it was very good, jacques was fun and last night was nice too. me and Michael got home on Friday about 11 in the morning after falling asleep on the bus and waking up far away from home. We walked through the grounds of Malahide Castle.

Last night was fun too, me, Phil, and Michael stayed for a while after you guys left, until about 2 or so when we started fading seriously. Then we went and had a curry which was amazing.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 6 November 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

We had amazing curry just before we met you, which may have been our first mistake.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 6 November 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

we went to CHARLIES. it was actually good though, great in fact. I'd never get their rice of course.

it's a shame it's all over now. what have I got to look forward to????

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 6 November 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

london, 27th november
glasgow, 17/18th december?

I kinda like that Gwen Stefani song.

cºzen (Cozen), Saturday, 6 November 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Cozen, shall we visit you, in Aberdeen?

the bellefox, Monday, 8 November 2004 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

the megabus goes to aberdeen. 12 hours each way, i think.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Bus to Glasgow is bad enough, but ABERDEEN? Anyway, I hear Cozen won't be there much longer.

Lara, I WIIIIISH! I don't have much holiday allowance to spare, but maybe a weekend would be manageable soon. What is happening on the 17/18? We will be back from Italy by then.

Madchen (Madchen), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

12 hours each way, makes 24 hours in total, I think, a lot of time to take, to go to Aberdeen. !

Unless it starts from London? I expect it must. I was thinking you meant it started from Glasgow, but such a bus would hardly credit the title... 'mega'.

I think I might not visit Aberdeen after all.

the bluefox, Monday, 8 November 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish people would visit me in aberdeen!

might you still come up for optimo, nick?

nick's turner prize thread has made me want to try london more. I reckon I will pretty soon, for a weekend or so.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Still thinking of Optimo, yes. Perhaps the pf could come? What does Madchen mean about your not being in Aberdeen for long?

Good old Dublin.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I thought lauren meant from glasgow and was being funny.

I have never been to dublin or, as I have already said, somewhere else, aberdeen. would it be possiblie to double 'em up or am I dreamin'?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

that's definitely true.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

By... folding them on top of one another? I think you would get wet.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

so, you finally watched dune?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i was being funny and truthful, all at once.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I was only half wrong, again.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Two years and counting. Perhaps I will bring Dune to Aberdublin and we can kill three worms with one stone.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I am losing the thread, of this thread.

What is Optimo? Is it some dance music thing so that N. is making a joke, about me liking it? That seems possible.

I don't see where Dune, I mean, Dune, comes in.

I would like to go to Aberdeen. I should not have dismissed the idea, above. I have been, before, you know!

Dick, your post to me was very good, wasn't it? I sent you a reply, as soon as I had read it. I liked the bit with the two titles from, 'The Boss'.

the bellefox, Monday, 8 November 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

optimo is a big disco. I'm not sure you would like the "music", that they'd play, but you might like the "night".

in dune, they fold space, making it possible to travel, from dublin, to aberdeen, without really moving. you could, also, travel, from glasgow, to manchester, in a similar way. aye, aye, duck.

I heard, that you went to aberdeen.

haha, I am glad you liked it, it was a little bit tossed-off. perhaps, that is what I should aim to do, more often. "I
'didn't care', so I did well!" I have just read and enjoyed yours and will reply, to it. sorry about the lack of commas.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he might like some of "the music". Last time I went, or perhaps the time before, they played 'Come Together' and it was by The Beatles.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to Aberdeen once, I think. It might have been Dundee. I have travelled far and wide in my time, just not the last 5 years or so.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 8 November 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's easy, to mix them up!

'and it was by the Beatles'

the bluefox, Monday, 8 November 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

you are all cordially invited.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we come together?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Right now?

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope you do, all of you.

because I have my job now I won't be in glasgow so frequently : /

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

You have a job, to do?

the bellefox, Monday, 8 November 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

you didn't hear? last week I was offered a traineeship.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought that was for when you'd finished your course.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

did you ever say "aye, beck", when you were small and thought someone was lying?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, sorry, I should clarify: the reason why I had been coming into glasgow frequently was that I was attending interviews. now that I no longer have the need for interviews, well... but now that I have discovered the £1 megabus I might just throw caution to a wind, and spend spend spend, on travel. this isn't 'try glasgow more' though it has something of the feel.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, I see.

Who me, RJG? No. No one would have understood what I meant, and I wouldn't have understood what I was saying.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

£1?

aye, beck.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

How many seats are actually available at £1?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

aye, dick.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(and are they all snapped up months in advance by Beck?)

Alba (Alba), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I had a theory, that some kid had misheard an adult, saying "I bet". it was a fairly popular phrase, in its time, though.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, to people who live in dublin.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've explained this before I think but - our local variation was 'aye, salmon'.

cºzen (Cozen), Monday, 8 November 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

1. £1 ???

2. RJG, I don't know that phrase

3. 'Aye, Dick' - aye-aye, N(ick) !! Or, Cozen.

4. Even the line about 'Beck' was quite good.

Very well done. Laddies.

the bluefox, Monday, 8 November 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dublin was good, to me. I could have some photos, conceivably, soon.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always had a great desire to go to Aberdeen, and I love taking the bus in Scotland. If you're up for a trip to Aberdeen in the Spring, Foxy, let me know.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a lovely bright day today. It makes me want to take a bus.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! Take a bus somewhere north, so you can see the northern lights better tonight.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the Northern Lights when I was up in Achiltibuie around this time last year. Marvellous stuff.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

in theory, i could rent a car and drive to aberdeen. i have an international drivers license and a credit card.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Theories like that kill more people on the roads each year than drink driving and speeding combined - FACT.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure i'd get the hang of the other side of the road thing, after a little while.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

INTERNATIONAL CAR ANATOMY

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren, its okay, most people south of Tamworth are more or less expendable.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

N. is right. That theory is more danger than it's worth. It should be quelled.

Monkey, do you think Aberdeen is better than Skerries? Skerries is good!

the bluefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Skerries is great. We used to holiday in Rush (which is just down the road) when I was a kid and we'd spend lots of ice-cream filled days in Skerries.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Penelope, have you read Myles on Skerries? That is: The Dalkey Archive.

Come to think of it, those pages are among the uneven book's best.

(Monkey, I can't remember if you have read it.)

the finefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't think you'd be very fond of that theory.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinefox, I haven't but you put me in mind to do so.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

O, well, you must.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Skerries is a lonely place.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Especially the concrete bathing hut changing room place which is secretly full of anti-Bush&Blair graffiti. Somehow that really impressed me.

the finefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Foxy, I haven't read it. But I might yet, even though I can't guarantee I'll like it.

Skerries is lovely, but I've no idea if Aberdeen's better or not, I've never been to Aberdeen. But you know me, I love the seaside.

Also I really want to go to Oban. And Stornaway.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

o-ban

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dublin is stuffed full of anti-Bush graffiti. It's quite charming.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

try living here. anti-Bush homophobic taxi drivers and anti-Bush racists etc get a bit tiring.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

There's nothing particularly notable about Oban, but it's charming enough, I suppose. Like Inverness, a fine stopping post. Could maybe be improved by some anti-Bush graffiti.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think people here really know what it means to be anti-Bush, given that they're all going to go out and vote for Bush's little footstool, Bertie, all over again when the time comes.

I think Dublin people just like writing the word 'Bush' everywhere.

I don't like having to go to Dublin. I'm happier when I'm away from it.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, the ones we saw didn't actually say 'Bush'.

They said things like DON'T CHANGE HORSEMAN MID-APOCALYPSE.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that is very good, N.

Ronan, I am sorry but I don't sympathize with your anti-anti-Bushism. (Echoes of a longago thread about your class on 9/11, or whatever.)

the bellefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

there was also a very cute little grafiti (what's the singular?) of a flowerpot on a windowsill.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

graffito?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Graffito.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Neato.

That sounds like an attempt to illustrate the song, 'Flowers In The Window', by the group, Travis.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, 'WHY CHANGE HORSES MID-APOLCALYPSE'

The flowers, I realised were a recurring motif across town, some kind of peace symbol. The road from Heuston station from to James' Street is packed with this kind of stuff; 'MAKE LOVE NOT MONEY' etc.

Damn hippies etc.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

except, APOCALYPSE was spelled correctly.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, those aren't hippies, those are anarchists. A lot of that stuff is left over from May Day. We just don't clean up very often around here.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I have noticed.

'from to'

The slogan is still very fine.

DON'T EVER ANTAGONIZE THE POT

the bellefox, Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I was relying on (misheard) reports of what the start of the slogan said, because from my position at the table I could only read 'ID APOCALYPSE'.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

oh DO hurry up!

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

A few photos, of they work OK.

'from to', indeed.

Yes, I know. Fixed.

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

'of they work OK'! On fire!

Ally C (Ally C), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

We saw the Northern Lights on the way home! Stopped the car in a lay-by and got out and there they were, flickering faintly in the sky.

Living in the country rules!

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Dancing Girls best. And Lara's eyeshadow.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

what's this... was everyone over in Dublin having a lovely time while I was over in the USA getting drunk with Dan Perry? I hate you all.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Who should the Radio 1 audience vote for in Zane Lowe's three-way bandclash the other night but... The Chalets.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Did you know, that I met Paula Cullen, randomly, in a pub, on Saturday after you left? And Reece Shearsmith.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 11 November 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I like dancing girls best too. It looks like Ally has skydived right into them.

Some good Nicks too.

Cathy (Cathy), Thursday, 11 November 2004 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I've still never met Paula Cullen, because I am *shy*.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 11 November 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

She would probably scare you, then.

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 11 November 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think he is. I have not seen the photos, there, yet.

Accentmonkey is fine on Fianna Fail but that is not going to shift my view of Dubya. I fear that The Local is getting in the way of The Global here.

Vicar, I thought you were Paula Cullen's friend?

Vicar, looking at what you have written - I pity you. !! (Not re. Cullen.)

RJG: did he lie to me, as well?

the finefox, Thursday, 11 November 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

do you pity me for being *shy* or for having a drink with Dan Perry?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

he is Joe, and it's been proved, by science.

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, Vicar.

the finefox, Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It has been proved. RJG's father is a very funny man. I would like to be able to humiliate RJG so readily.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 11 November 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I am proud of the fact that *my* Dancing girls turned out so well.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 12 November 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, dear. Well done.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 12 November 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think you could, humiliate me, cook. please don't try.

two weeks pass...
What are the Ballymun Eastates?

I have one day in Dublin—Dec. 20....what should I do?

I asked Andrew about good sightseeing things and he said I should ask Lauren!

So, Lauren, if you're out there, what whould I do in Dublin?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 3 December 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

go to mj oneills or bruxelles and have a carvery lunch and get completely smashed talking shite to the regulars.

alternatively, just hang around in town, go to trinity college, the book of kells, the museum, visit all the usual spots like temple bar and the whore in the sewer statue etc. dublin is tops!

gem (trisk), Friday, 3 December 2004 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Has any seen Mary?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

we saw her yesterday-ay ...

great to meet Mary, and I hope her cunning smuggling-contraband-in-her-hat ploy worked OK at the Morrissey gig.

next up: Dog Latin!

rener (rener), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I [heart] Dublin soo much. My hat strategy not only worked, but was put to great benefit after Lara scammed us into second row center ( "oops, pardon me, sorry, oops, you don't mind do you? we're small, she came all the way from new york city..."). Got a pic of Lara's smiling face with Moz's body in the same frame--and also a few rare pics of the singer grinning--before the camera sadly died not in time to catch to the splendor of the 3rd shirt change. Thanks to Andrew for hosting me and to everyone who came out--it was wonderful. (Do you tip your taxi drivers? Please say no. If so, I will feel awful.) I got 3 hours of sleep after Andrew took me to the "unofficial after party"--which was really fun but luckily both my flights back were fairly empty so I could stretch out and sleep on the plane. I want to come back!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey is ILX working now? So.... I think I'll be coming Jan 2 thru the 4th or 5th.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(Do you tip your taxi drivers? Please say no. If so, I will feel awful.)
In theory we do, but they're such racist moaning assholes that we don't mind if you don't.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary it was great to have you here. You fit right in (despite nasty things some people say about Dublin, that's a compliment) and I would like to have another seriously hat-wearing friend. I'm so glad we got to meet, had such fun at the gig and heard such delightful banter from the gay boys on both sides. Yum yum!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, tickets and hotel have been booked... I'll be in Dublin Jan 2-6. Suggestions on what I should be doing?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

drinking!

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 23 December 2004 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds good to me

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 23 December 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Coming to my thirtieth birthday party! If you want.

I think Accentmonkey's bloke is the only Irish person I've ever seen tip taxi drivers.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I may have on occasion, although I usually leave my people to interact with taxi drivers for me.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 23 December 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron you must come out and hang out! if you want to know any general stuff drop me an email.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 23 December 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks for the invites Andrew and Ronan... I'll drop you both an email!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 23 December 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron, you are very lucky. Here's what I did during my one-day visit:

Airlink to Busaras to Luas to Smithfield (Andrew's house)
Smithfield walk around Liffey cross bridge Christ Church take a picture Urban Outfitters meet Ronan coffee shop eat lunch Trinity College tour by an actual alumni Merrion Square Oscar Wilde statue and childhood home old bookstore Grafton St claustrophobia coffee at the McCafé 2nd Story books pre-gig drinks in a pub near Trinity College the Point surprisingly good pizza and after party in Temple Bar.

If I had more time, I may have gone to Winding Stair bookshop, the National Gallery (Andrew offered me to go there but I was too jet-lagged to contemplate culture), and the James Joyce statue and some of his haunts and sites. Really, you should just walk around and around. Dublin is really compact (from what I could tell) and you can walk easily around the city. Also, take a trip outside somehwere into the countryside--looked pretty and green from the airplane.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 23 December 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That all sounds like a good plan... I'll be around for five days, so am planning on doing lots of walking and exploring and reading and drinking.

And, this is awesome:

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 23 December 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Accentmonkey's bloke is the only Irish person I've ever seen tip taxi drivers.

Well, he's not as careful with his money as some people.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 23 December 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

See, the reason I didn't tip the very nice driver who drove us home from the after-party and agreed to pick me up the next morning at 6:15 and was there at 6:10 and only charged me 15 although the meter said otherwise was because I remembered AF taking coins back from the same driver the previous night and I thought it might be some kind of outrage to tip in Dublin?

Aaron: Ronan and AF were grousing about their balmy weather, saying how freezing it was.

One minor tragedy: My plane from Dublin to Heathrow was delayed, I was supposed to have like a 3 hour layover, which turned into 45 mintues, 1/2 hour of which was spent simply walking from one end of the goddamn airport to the other--to wit, I saw argyle, I saw a stand-alone "Pringle" store ,I saw duty free, and I had to keep walking...the horror.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 23 December 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I always tip taxi drivers. Unless they're obnoxious, which they rarely are in dublin. It's something I picked up in London and then later reaffirmed in Australia.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 1 January 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

What is Lily's like? Apparently that's where the "official" after-party took place.

Maurice Smith (Mary), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 06:04 (twenty-one years ago)

so what happened to Aaron? has he fallen into a pothole?

rener (rener), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

To mis-quote Michael Flatley, Lily's is the only nightclub in the world where you can meet Andrea Corr, some loser from Westlife, and Michael Flatley. Small wonder it attracted no bids whatsoever when it was recently put up for sale.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to lily's. there were obvious gangster types, one of whom roughly and rather scarily handled the various women around him who appeared to be in his employ.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm here! Sorry I haven't rung anyone up... I've been enjoying skulking around the city on my own in a mentalist sort of way. Anyone have any plans tonight?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ps. aaron is extremely nice, witty, and handsome and everyone should hang out with him.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

What's more he's a GRECIAN!

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheers to you Londoners, who wore me out actually!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

So, I'm about to head out of the interweb cafe and get something to eat. I'll ring up Andrew and Ronan (since i have their numbers) after lunch, and maybe if anyone feels like meeting for a drink this eve that would be lovely.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I can do it! I have a bad flu but it is passed the worst stages, I hope.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw sorry to hear Ronan. How was yr driving test?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, I'll do this... I'll check back on ILX later today to see if anyone is up for a drink. Cheers.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ill b in town a-drinkin tonite anyway, so ill prob pop into wherever folks r at.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like a plan.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

my driving test was rescheduled to Friday!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a bad flu but it is passed the worst stages, I hope.

my grammar suffers on however. is there any plan for later then? I should be ok, given I'm not working tomorrow.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey I'm back.... I'm going to head back to my hotel for a quick nap but will be ready for action this evening. I'm staying in Rathmines but anywhere is within walking distance for me. Any suggestions?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

where do other Dubliners suggest, I am fine with wherever, once it's city centre, maybe somewhere on Georges Street so Aaron doesn't have to walk so far.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The Swan is a quality Auld Dublin Pub, how about there?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you going to come out Ronan? Even with the flu? That would be
great.

The Swan sounds perfect. What time do you lot want to meet up?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

where is the Swan Andrew? I presume I should know but I've never been I don't think!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, just realized it's actually not in my guidebook

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on Aungier Street, I think. I mean, I know exactly where it is, but that street changes name half a dozen times. It's on the extension of South Great George Street, to the west of St. Stephen's Green. It's on a corner. One of the sides says the name of the owner (T Lynch) while the other says The Swan. It's south of The Capital, north of DIT Kevin Street.

The third sentence and some mobile numbers should see Aaron right.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Got it...

http://www.dublinpubscene.com/thepubs/johnlynchtheswanbar.html

I'll be there around 7-ish I think. I've got your mobile, Andrew (mine doesn't work here I'm afraid) and will give you a ring to confirm before I leave. Good?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

So, er, the number I have for Andrew just keeps ringing and Ronan's number went to some woman's voicemail. I'm heading over to the pub now.... Black coat, blue hat, brown wavy hair for anyone who hasn't met me. Ta!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed all this because I 'work' at work these days. Silly me.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Are there plans for tomorrow evening?

(I seem like a desperate outcast, don't I?)

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i was wondering wtf aaron has been lately. now i know!

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

He has become a travelling femme fatale, I believe.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll be in dublin from friday til sunday guys and gals. FAP?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Jed, I think I might be in SLIGO this weekend, so no DV Fappage for you.

But everyone else - Aaron has floated the idea of going for nosh on Wednesday evening. Who is coming, and where will we go?

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I plan to come out tomorrow, after spending tonight lemsipping in front of X-Men 2. I felt emotionally affected by it so I assume I am on a comedown aswell as having a cold. I trust the Dublin ILX steering committee in their choice of eatery.

and Jed, what day/time suits you best? I must check my work roster actually.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be around the weekend! And for food tomorrow.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

where are we going for food?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

weekend - yes.

food tomorrow - unlikely. am working unfortunately

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll have to work out when i'm free - shame no dirty vicar!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

are there any non-horrible gay bars in Dublin?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to what was supposed to be a gay bar in dublin, and hit on someone, and it turned out not to be a gay bar anymore. whoops.

are there any non-horrible gay bars ANYWHERE?

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren was in this gay bar called Gubu when she was here, it's actually quite nice, I think, though I haven't a big frame of reference.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"the front lounge" is nice enough, jed. i forget the street name, its up near christ church cathedral somewhere.

"the george" is the best known and most frequented, but there's the odd outburst of violence, and there was once a rape in the toilets so i hesitate to call it nice.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

There is allegedly a late night drinking place on the other side of Exchequer street from the Front Lounge called the Back Lounge. I may ask my contacts in the community for further details/ideas. Though Gubu is dead nice!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

phil, i ask myself this question all the time. i might check out GUBU cos i like the name and the front lounge also.

i'm not sure if i fancy getting raped.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren was in this gay bar called Gubu when she was here

i like the way macho ronan has phrased that, which totally obscures the fact that he took me there.

it's pleasant and very mellow (happy hour time, anyway).

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren was in this gay bar called Gubu when she was here, it's actually quite nice, I think, though I haven't a big frame of reference.

I've always liked Gubu, and The Front Lounge. As far as I know they both advertise themselves as being straight-friendly, which I think means that I don't have to pretend to be gay when I go there, which makes a nice change from when I used to have to go to JJ Smyth's all those years ago.

There is allegedly a late night drinking place on the other side of Exchequer street from the Front Lounge called the Back Lounge

I'm a bit confused by this. The Front Lounge is on Parliament St, not Exchequer St, and is a fairly happy, if not actively gay bar. The upper floor of it is called The Back Lounge and is really quite gay on the weekend.

Anyway, none of this makes any difference to me because I'm not in work this week which means I won't be going into the big city. Next week, now that would be a different story altogether.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Enough gayness! Where are we going tonight?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Monty's?

The Front Lounge is gay friendly, the back part of the pub is called the Back Lounge and is even gay friendlier. It's quite a good place to mingle and get chatted up, I hear.

Gubu is lovely also. Dublin, in general, is quite gay once you stay away from Temple Bar. All the bars around Grafton Street/Georges Street (Hogans, Market Bar, Cocoon, Dakota etc) are usually quite gay/straight mixed. (It seems funny to be talking about sexual orientation and nightspots in Dublin as, on the whole, the Irish aren't a very sexy race).

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Jed, I should be about at the weekend if you're passing through.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah, I thought it was Parliament Street, then I thought it was wrong.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

(It seems funny to be talking about sexual orientation and nightspots in Dublin as, on the whole, the Irish aren't a very sexy race)

Aaron, wait til you meet Lara.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Monty's might be nice, but I was there the other day. Who is definitely coming along?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

He has become a travelling femme fatale, I believe.

Beautiful! So wait, are we eating at a gay bar tonight?

Oh, and Irish are more beautiful than, say, the English.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I am definitely coming along.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the way macho ronan has phrased that, which totally obscures the fact that he took me there.

I actually only mentioned it so Jed could have a second opinion! I did realise it looked that way afterwards, obviously macho lauren won't admit going to a gay bar either!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and I am definitely coming along tonight, whatever way you're all swinging.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i went to a gay bar.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad you can make it Ronan.

There's no real need to go to a gay-friendly place on my account, btw. Phil is the gay, not me, although I can be quite fey from time to time.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry for calling you macho lauren.

this thread is a faux-pas minefield.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

the idea of either of us being macho is amusing.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren could beat me up!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

since I last saw you, I drive a motorbike and my hobbies are sky-diving, firefighting, and bear-taming.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

watch out, aaron. sounds like the new action ronan is the one who could beat you up.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Crap. I'll be sure to smile and be extra nice then.

I'm about to head out into the blah Dublin weather..... I'll give Lara and/or the DV a ring about when and where we're meeting up. Looking forward to meeting more Dubliners!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

what time are people planning to eat

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah that's a good question.

Now it's raining even harder. Maybe I'll stay in this internet cafe a bit longer then.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

it's horrible yes, I have to go to the bank soon, hopefully the rain will stop.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I think it might've stopped.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, it's not my job to decide where to go, right?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

So wait, are we eating at a gay bar tonight?

Hideous mental image's put me right off my food!!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

mmm yes. not me so much.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, it's not my job to decide where to go, right?

Right then, it's mine. Monty's is a lovely Nepalese (IE Indian) restaurant on Eustace Street. If you follow Georges St all the way north until it ends in a T-junction with Dame St, Eustace St is one of the lanes that runs down from Dame St towards the river (specifically, it's the one on your left).

Who's up for it, and when? I have no specific time in mind, starting anywhere between 6 and 9 is fine for me.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

7.30?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Monty's is just opposite the Irish Film Institute also and there's a sign for this on Dame Street.

Anyhow, who's up for Monty's at half six? Perhaps a quick pint in the IFI beforehand? Half seven is a bit late for me coming straight from work.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

for some reason I always suggest later, but yes half six is fine with me.

careful on Eustace Street, it's a slippery one.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like a plan. Is it advisable to ring ahead, DV? I ask because the only times I've been there have been in large pre-organised groups for birthdays and the like.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll book now - for 6? (Andrew, Aaron, Ronan, DV and Rener and me)

Anyone else about?

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Booking is advisable.

They are going to love me there, back again twice in a week (although they may be surprised I am willing to show my face again).

what time are you booking for? 6.00 might be too early for me, but 6.30 should be fine.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

6.30 is best for me too.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just spoken to Aaron - we're booking for six at 6.30pm and I'll be in the IFI from about 6pm with a large pint of golden cider.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

don't rush across the street, very dangerous.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, I think a hot curry may shatter your addled brain?

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

or something.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No one's answring at Monty's - perhaps Ronan's on to something? Did the owner slip on his way to work???

I'll keep trying and drop in after work if calling fails to rouse them.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They bunk off in the afternoon!

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, closed 2.30 - 6.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Lara, put your number in your phone, and ring them at 6.00. No problem.

I am so bossy, for one not willing to pick the restaurant we go to.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Monty's booked! I'm on my way (work Nazi's have delayed me...)

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no real need to go to a gay-friendly place on my account, btw. Phil is the gay, not me, although I can be quite fey from time to time.

haha, yeah, i was wondering how you guys ended up deciding on a gay bar for food.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Lara's magic is amazing... last night old Mr Monty smiled for the first time ever.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 6 January 2005 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I did not know that people had actually been to GUBU, as a bar, rather than hanging around in other bars talking learnedly about the origins of its name.

the finefox, Thursday, 6 January 2005 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah, the Finefox is back!

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 6 January 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Summoned from Limbo by our discussion of him last night.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 January 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed. The skin on his ears must be raw.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 January 2005 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Greetings from Heathrow! Have to write quick because my time is almost up BUT thank you lovely Dubliners for a wonderful evening of curry and a pint. Very nice to meet you all and I look forward to your visits to NYC.

Ronan.... I expect an update.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 6 January 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. *Exciting times*

Safe home Aaron.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

um call me sometime aaron

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe I will send the mail now.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I just sent it

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

now the waiting.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

hey guys - cheap guesthouse needed - should i head to gardiner street?

DUBLINjed, Friday, 7 January 2005 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

There are alot of them there so you should be fine yeah.

I am in work this afternoon from about 3 o clock on, UO is pretty much the very centre of Temple Bar, if you want to come in and say hello.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 7 January 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew good to meet you albeit breifly. Come to Optimo, d00d!

Ronan thanks for a great night you are a fucking amazing guy. In fact. you totally made my weekend. SO MUCH FUN!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, great to meet you, man. I heard about some of the fun that followed.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

shame yr not coming to glasgow this weekend - there's a Black Rabbit Whorehouse on friday as well as an optimo on sunday!

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Jed, it was a good laugh alright. Hope you guys enjoyed the club too.

I got home at like, 3 the next afternoon. The DJ played the Mayer Happiness remix again at the end, it was weird but very good. And "Transition" too.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 10:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard about some of the fun that followed.

what kind of fun? not Lapellos again?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i ended up at a lapellos in limerick. the gig we were doing was at the pub downstairs, which was owned by the same guy. he insisted that we have drinks with him upstairs, afterwards.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

oooh, gig?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

yes. almost 3 years ago, i guess. i was there in more of an administrative/sales capacity, though, not running around onstage.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 12 January 2005 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

now the waiting.

I don't know if you've sent Aaron an update but I'm certainly curious. Have there been developments?

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

everyone knows except you.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah!!! What happened??

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Natural History Museum. It belongs in a museum itself.

I have finally visited this place. Truly it is the greatest museum ever, although it is more like a collection of hunting trophies than a museum as such.

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 29 January 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw I wish I would've gone.

Hello Dublin. I miss you. And Ronan, I'm still waiting to hear what happened. You better have emailed her.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Saturday, 29 January 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

get there on thursday!!!

dog latin (dog latin), Saturday, 29 January 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, DV, the Natural History Museum is very much 'of the Empire'. They have some remarkably large fish (halibut?? cod??) if I remember correctly...

I was in Urban Outfitters this evening and it never occured to me to pop upstairs and plague Ronan about this pressing issue personally. I hope the he's too busy with romantic liasons and that's why he hasn't posted to this thread.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

DL, drop me a mail if you're up for doing something.

Oh and Aaron/Lara, I mailed her, she replied with a long and seemingly sweet email, then I mailed back and she didn't reply. She said she'd see me in work and other nice things but I haven't seen her.

I am not very busy with romantic liasons.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 January 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Were you in-store today? The tunes were sweet to my ears.

(That girl is definitely a lesbian.)

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in-store, you should have come and said hi. What time were you in?

I don't know if she is a lesbian, she seemed lovely in the mail but less so in the one she didn't send.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 January 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I popped in just after five and bought two PopArt cameras, two album cover frames and one very over-priced necklace thingummy. I wanted to buy a gold bag but thought the price tag even more terrifying.

I don't want to you to become obsessive but are you sure *you* replied?

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah I left just after six, after five I think I played nice electro!

I am sure I replied but I have wondered did she get the mail. I think it might be a bit ott to mail again though, I was hoping to just see her around. I hope she's not thinking "oh god now I can't go to Urban Outfitters!".

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 January 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha! Definitely do not mail her again.also do not mention shagging in any early correspondence, unlike a Friendster nonce who keeps mailing me. I have replied to him to him to ask him what in the Lord's name he thinks he's achieving. One day I'kll make a great, evil Mum...

(THE FACT THAT I HAVE REPLIED DOES NOT MAKE HIM BETTER THAN YOU!)

(Also - why is the energetic, handsome champion of youth not out on a Saturday night? Perhaps I'm hopelessly out of touch and the cool folk only head out after 10pm these days?)

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't decided whether to go out or not yet, plus I like to drink on my own and listen to music before going out!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you also like the feeling of a cold blade against your skin?! I can't picture you as a 'me-time' kind of fella but I'll try harder. I'm heading to bed to watch Breathless.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I am full of surprises.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm heading to bed to watch Breathless

One of my favorite films! The one with Jean Paul Belmondo that is, not the Richard Gere one.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

you mailed her? cool!

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 29 January 2005 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

she replied today.

she said some stuff, about vitalic, and then "I normally work Thursdays but I'm off on the 17th, I don't suppose you're playing then are you?"

Which is weird cos that's the one date in the next month when I am playing.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

is this di***?

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yep.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

:)

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 7 February 2005 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Awesome! And she liked Vitalic?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 7 February 2005 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, she went into alot of detail!

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 7 February 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi to DV, Rener, Lara, Andrew and the rest of the Dublin ILX posse. Any people around and care to go for a drink some evening this week?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, yes? But I'm gigging tonight and on Saturday. Tomorrow would be better than Friday, to be honest.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Tomorrow would be fine with me. Where are you gigging?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Whelans, and er, the Voodoo Lounge.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice. I didn't know you were in a band. What kind of stuff do you play?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no, I meant attending.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't make a FAP thursday or friday... but maybe saturday or something? However, I also intend going to Andrew's gig.

The Voodoo Lounge is owned by Huey from the Fun Loving Criminals, so if you came along you might get to meet him!

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I am kind of psychotically busy with college at the moment but maybe Saturday afternoon???

If I'm not working of course!

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Dublin... Last night I had several (many?) pints of Guinness and thought about you. Love, Aaron

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

several, I think. many suggests the question "too many?". When people discuss The Irish Question, that is not the one they mean.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

what would you know, someone who chooses the buttermilk of Lebanon over god's honest IRISH pint of plain?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Saturday would be fine too. Or Saturday and Thursday. As you can see my evenings are not exactly booked up here. The guy whose house I'm staying at is out of town, and outside of the office, I have pretty much a blank slate. That gig sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind checking out the Voodoo lounge. Is that the Saturday gig? Maybe we could meet up in the afternoon if Ronan could join us before heading to the show.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Andrew choses blackcurrant over booze. I can see where he's coming from on the taste front but not in terms of satisfaction. I had the best night in so long last Friday when I, Lara Byrne, planned to go for 'a quick pint after work' and managed to stay out till about 7am. Hurrah for me. It was one of those nights where you just love love love the taste of booze. (I will not speak of Saturday).

I can come out tomorrow night too if people are gadding.Friday is bad for me but Saturday also has potenial. Just tell me where to be! (And if we could make it O'Donoghues on Merrion Row so I can smoke that would be great?)

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

O'Donoghues sounds good to me, if it's okay with Andrew. Maybe we could plan to meet up there tomorrow after work for a pint (and a smoke)?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i could make it to one or both of these nights out. i will check this thread tomoro.

Dog Latin supping a Guiness at Frank Ryan & Son this weekend :-D

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 10 February 2005 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

is Frank Ryan & Son the one down in Smithfield? As mentioned on the other thread, sorry to have missed you, Dog Latin - DV and I were away last weekend.

rener (rener), Thursday, 10 February 2005 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree (with the plans, and with sorrow for being away last weekend).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 February 2005 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It sounds like there is interest for Saturday night as well, but if people are up for meeting tonight, I could be at O'Donoghues whenever is convenient. I work only a few blocks from there. How does 6 sound?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 10 February 2005 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

is Frank Ryan & Son the one down in Smithfield? As mentioned on the other thread, sorry to have missed you, Dog Latin - DV and I were away last weekend.

That's right, we went there after visiting the Jameson storehouse.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 10 February 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I will come to O'Donoghues tonight. I have a meeting at 4, which could run for a while though so I can't really confirm a time. Nate, do you have a phone I can text you on?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 10 February 2005 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately, my cell phone doesn't work here. But if you send me your #, I could call from a pay-phone to check in if you're running late.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 10 February 2005 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I'll email it to you. I'll def be in the meeting until half five but feel free to call and I can break away.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 10 February 2005 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I should be there by six, I think.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 10 February 2005 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks very, very much to Lara and Andrew for a lovely evening. It's going to take a lot of lattes to keep my eyelids open for the rest of the workday here. Hopefully I should be recovered enough by tomorrow to see the gig. I think texting Aqib (sp?) must surely rank among the highlights of my week, if not my year.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaqib and Haid - the wedding of 2005??

(I hope you didn't get into trouble with your host this morning!)

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Not yet, but there could be trouble brewing. I haven't had a chance to speak to him alone yet.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

God, really? I hope your hangover/tiredness carries you through in a protective mental vacuum.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, it probably won't be as bad as I just made it sound, if he even mentions it. I'll just apologize and promise not to do it again. I don't see how he could be very upset. He seems to be in a decent enough mood. Luckily my hangover has mostly worn off. :-)

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I clearly left too soon.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed you did: http://www.friendster.com/user.php?uid=16454397

(The scary thing is that we were not that drunk.)

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

omg - I'd forgotten about the Phil Collins part.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

When are people thinking of heading to the Voodoo Lounge tomorrow evening?

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure - probably around seven or eight?

I got a text from Owen this afternoon - his day hasn't exactly gone swimmingly either: he woke up on the couch at half ten this morning. So the nine o'clock interview wasn't a roaring success!

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no - that's terrible! You definitely had the right idea to take the day off today. I wonder if Owen is being deluged with messages from Aaqib now.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure!! His phone died and the alarm didn't go off - perhaps it crumbled under the deluge of hot-4-you loving texts?!

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

ROFL

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, he probably just stayed up all night texting Aaqib after we left, and didn't want to admit it. ;-)

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That's probably it. Or perhaps he indulged in some Max Candy styled entertainment after we left and passed out from the excitement?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate - we should meet somewhere before going to the VL, as meeting in a gig venue can be ye horrore.

any ideas?

maybe I will confer with YMOF using the magic of the Portable Voice Transmitting Apparatus and then hope that you ring me tomorrow.

the Brazen Head can be nice, for a bit of ye olde Dublin character, whuh whuh whuh.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they do food? That xould be a good pre-drunken booze fest option?

Do we need to get tickets in advance of tomorrow night btw?

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha - Max Candy totally owes us for all the free publicity they're getting from that Friendster profile.

xpost

Yes, that sounds great, DV. I'll take your # with me, so I can contact you tomorrow. I like the idea of meeting up somewhere else first. Maybe we could get a bite to eat before the show, if people are interested.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Do we need to get tickets in advance of tomorrow night btw?

jesus no. Don't forget, no one in the world liked Estel bar us, so even less people will like Continuity Estel.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the Brazen Head *might* do food, but I'm not sure. We might be better off grabbing something in town.

Oh no, I have so much to do tomorrow! *panics*

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Drink from the shoe of truth (vodka) and calm your ass down, man.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

dude.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I am trying to be more 'street' for Lent. It's my gift to Jebus.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Pub food would be fine with me, if going in search of other options is too much trouble.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 12 February 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Finding somewhere to eat is never a problem in Dublin (unless you're with Ally C). Qu'est-ce que c'est le plan pour ce soir?

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I'm down by Temple Bar at an internet cafe at the moment, so I can meet whenever people are ready. I might go back to the house and drop off some things first. Should we talk by phone around 5 or so?

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm at home and I'll be watching the match - right now! Got to get to the TV! I can be in town by about half six/seven? I've some chores to get through this afternoon before I can make myself free for fun. Give me a call at around half five for a status report and we'll arrange a time?

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, that sounds good. Go Ireland!

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

If you wanted to catch the match in ye olde pub environs, go to Searson's at the bottom of Waterloo Road (the pub we were in on Thursday night). It's a good rugby/football watching place with lots of shouting and wringing of hands.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 12 February 2005 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds fun - maybe I'll stop by there on my way home. Talk to you soon. I'll also try to get ahold of the Vicar to see what he's up to. I don't have Andrew's #, so hopefully he will coordinate with you all.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I can co-ordinate too. The Vicar is spinning out of control with jobs to do today so he will probably meet us at the gig. If you call me I'll call everyone else. *promise*

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I've just got off the phone with DV, we were trying to organise some where to meet later (but before the gig) for food. You might want to see if he's got some ideas.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I am just too fucked to do anything I'm afraid. been doing assignments and lectures all week only to find when I eventually finished that I had to work yesterday, today, tomorrow, and Monday. Feet are so sore now!

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 12 February 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

We went out. It was great. This is all.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 14 February 2005 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Estel totally rocked too - and we even got free CDs.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

How was Berlin?

o. nate (onate), Friday, 25 February 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty cold, but in a good way. There were loads of cool bands playing (Pram, Chicks On Speed, LCD Soundsystem) but I missed all of them through only finding out about them when they were sold out or whatever. I bought CDs of East German folk rock and lounge. Socialist!

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds nice. I don't think I have any East German music. I think if I went to Berlin I'd try to time my visit around an Ellen Allien gig.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, ellen allien?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I think she's based in Berlin. She does kind of blippy electronic stuff - a little bit electro, a bit house, a bit IDM - and makes some pretty amazing DJ mixes. If she had a regular DJ gig there I would be in clover - seeing her perform her own stuff would be gravy.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister's going to Berlin on her honeymoon.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 14 March 2005 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Very guttural languages the pair of them, the German and the Irish.

Woof!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry missed the last FAP, I was out with my girlfriend but then I felt sick after what seemed a normal nice meal in the average Chinese that is The Good World, of Georges Street, so I went home.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

Ronan has a girlfriend!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Jurassic Park!

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Can I blatantly plug my table quiz that I am running on Monday, May 9th? It's at 8pm in the Teachers' Club. It will be a laff riot and mostly about music.

Come one, come all.

Actually, just come all, really.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 20 April 2005 20:40 (twenty years ago)

RONAN HAS A GIRLFRIEND!

Like the way he dropped that so casually into the conversation as if hadn't all been through the trials with him!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 21 April 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

wait... is Accentmonkey Ronan's girlfriend? Looks like we will have to go to this table quiz to find out. maybe Lara will bring her new boyfriend.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 21 April 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Ha bloody ha! I am destined to always love from afar, you know that Vicar.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 22 April 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

three months pass...
I'll probably offend Dubliners and Cork people (Corkers?) by using this thread for this question, but since I'll have 24 hours or so in Cork soon, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for unmissable stuff there? At present I'll mostly be looking at City of Culture stuff. Most importantly, can any recommend a top quality place for me to get a really good full Irish breakfast in Cork?

I require enough white pudding to bury a pony up to its nostrils.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

That's a common misconception, most white pudding these days is made from horse eyelids instead.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

What is your actual touring schedule, Tim?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Ahem Tim, travelling a few scant miles over the water is absolutely no reason to completely disregard the helpful advice of Dr Agatston... oh, wait.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

AF: Cork tomorrow then Dublin on Friday and for a few days. That's about it.

PP: I welcome and fear the excess, but I the austerity thereafter (and Dr. A's fury) are cause for fear alone.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

(A stray I in a sentence is of greater concern than a stray eye in the white pud.)

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

(A stray white pud in the eye is worse than both, obv.)

Mostly I want to know about the best Cork greasy spoons.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

Tim, I believe people from Cork are Corconians. No, really.

I don't know anything about greasy spoons, but I can ask my mate Myles.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

Or Andrew can.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

From that Myles:

The Uptown Grill on Macurtain Street is okay, but only okay. It's very
greasy and there's liver too. Yum! The Gingerbread House on Paul
Street is pretty good and cheap compared to others I've tried. Round
the corner on Frenchchurch Street there's the Strasbourg Goose, which
is pricey but pretty comprehensive. The Green Kiwi is further out of
town (on College Road) near UCC and the cheapest I know.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Hooray! Thanks! Is it bad to say that the Uptown Grill sounds like it's exactly what I'm after?

I think that's the first example I've ever seen of the letters chch in sequence in a single word.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Unless you've read about a champion/chaplain/cheater/chemic/chief/chronicler who was so good (or so arch) as to be described as an arch(fill in blank), you're probably right.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Andrew's response made absolutely no sense to me until I realized until he was responding to the second sentence of Tim's post and not the first.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
Let's go out. Like, have lunch or something. I propose Saturday March 24th at the Silk Road Cafe in the Chester Beatty. It'll be nice.

accentmonkey, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:31 (nineteen years ago)

Actually that could work! I have visitors and I could just leave them tourist away and I'd come meet you. Are we allowed bring +1's?

kv_nol, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:34 (nineteen years ago)

Of course. You can bring your visitors too, if you like. The Chester Beatty is classy.

accentmonkey, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

I'll come with just the +1 I think. They can go off and tourist away. CB is for Dubs only, feck teh tourists all wearing away our pretty things with their eyes!

kv_nol, Friday, 9 March 2007 10:51 (nineteen years ago)

That Saturday is not so good for me...it is my birthday the day after and I have plans made already!

I like the idea though.

Ronan, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:15 (nineteen years ago)

Not another FAP without Ronan! You are hard to pin down sir. This could still go ahead and we could have another one. That is if we're all still talking to each other!

kv_nol, Friday, 9 March 2007 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

Well, if we do this one it would be just the two of us, Kv, because Rener is GRADUATING from Spy School that day and can't come. What about the following Saturday, the 31st?

accentmonkey, Friday, 9 March 2007 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

yes I am kind of crap...I very seldom go and do anything these days though so it's nothing personal!.my gf is over that weekend, she might like to come along I guess, I can check and see.

Ronan, Friday, 9 March 2007 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

You are not kind of crap, don't be worrying! I wouldn't mind the two of us but yeah, it'd make my life easier the following weekend. Hopefully Rener and DV will have recovered from graduation celebrations! Is k-dawg lurking anymore? Will someone let him know?

kv_nol, Friday, 9 March 2007 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

Alright. I am putting it on my calendar for Saturday March 31st. And I am going on that day, even if I am going on my own.

accentmonkey, Friday, 9 March 2007 12:34 (nineteen years ago)

Where is the CB [/ignorant]

Ronan, Friday, 9 March 2007 12:36 (nineteen years ago)

Dublin Castle. It's around the back.

Kewl, see you there so Trish.

kv_nol, Friday, 9 March 2007 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

HI DERE I will come to this as well. I like the way this is not so much a FAP as a FAB (Fancy A Baklava).

rener, Friday, 9 March 2007 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

YAY! I hope you are bringing your +1. Mine won't be coming sadly ;_;

Indeed. I am loving sensibleness of it all. Most unusual.

(Congrats in advance btw)

kv_nol, Friday, 9 March 2007 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

They serve beer and wine in the Silk Road.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 10 March 2007 10:57 (nineteen years ago)

Stop trying to turn this into a piss up! I for one welcome this new and sober IRLILX.

Also I have someone's 30th that night so I can't actually go for pints as it is +1's family and I cannot make an eejit of myself (again).

kv_nol, Saturday, 10 March 2007 16:27 (nineteen years ago)

If you can't behave like a drunken fool in front of your girlfriend's family, where can you?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 11 March 2007 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Church.

kv_nol, Monday, 12 March 2007 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

YO. Is this still happening? Am reminded by mocking Trish's love of young blonde boy off of M&C on another thread.

What time? Be warned, sister's engagement party the night before so might be in fairly bad shape!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

I do not love Lord Blakeney. He is 12.

Yes, I'm still on. March 31st. Silk Road. I like the time of 2pm because you usually miss the main lunch rush but are still in time for the good scoff to be left. What say you?

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

2 works for me. I am now totally disgusted by Lord Blakeney thing, I might not be able to look you in the eye.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

You are making me feel a bit ill now. Stop!

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Okay. Two okay for everyone? Ronan? Rener? D (V the lurker)?

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

2pm on the 31st is good for me. I'm thinking of applying for a library assistant job in the Chester Beatty, if only because it would mean that the Silk Road would be MY WORK CANTEEN. Rarrr.

rener, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I had forgotten it was the 31st! Here I was all gearing up for Silk Road a week early. Bah. I'll survive! It would be a dangerous canteen to be near for sheer amounts that I'd eat, a friend used to work in B0rd B14 and the food there... Let's just say, I could rarely get her to meet me for lunch if the canteen there was open!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

So many 'there's. Sigh.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

D (V the lurker)?

it's not so much that I lurk, but having to key in my cockfarming password every time I want to post (and then being unable to view anything on this stupid forum) makes me a bit less inclined to post unless I have something really interesting to say. Like this.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 23 March 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

I wore a green skirt and darker green tights today. I didn't get confused with last Saturday, which was unforgettable on account of all the midday drinkers milling about on the streets. I changed out of my green singlet. Literal dresser. That's me.

youn, Friday, 23 March 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

h'llo dublin ILXrs

I might be spinning through dublin very briefly in mid-may and have a question -- does anyone have any recommendations for venues that are prone to hosting experimental / odd electronic music?

Milton Parker, Saturday, 24 March 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

If this were a year ago, and you were going to be here on a sunday night, I would recommend you Lazybird, but that has since cancelled. But wait, you said electronic music... mmm. I will make inquiries.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 24 March 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

Ronan to thread!

Otherwise there's Thomas House for pints, Crawdaddy/Pod for dancing. At least those are the only ones I can think of on Monday morning!

kv_nol, Monday, 26 March 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

Milton, is that you want to hear some of this music, or that you want to make some and are looking for a place to host you?

accentmonkey, Monday, 26 March 2007 09:11 (eighteen years ago)

lookin' for host, actually. though my available dates are insanely slim so I guess I should probably just settle for a nice long stare at the Book of Kells

Milton Parker, Monday, 26 March 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Ronan's the man you want for organizing things, I think. There are a bunch of places that host electronica/odd music. The Project Arts Centre, the Temple Bar Music Centre, Crawdaddy, Whelan's, Bewley's Theatre and so on, but I don't know how big a place you want or how you would publicise it or anything like that.

accentmonkey, Monday, 26 March 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

thanks for the names, they look great. I'm playing Project Arts Centre as a duo & was hoping to find a place to do a solo, but that one could be more of a quiet noisy thing. this thread, v. v. helpful.

Milton Parker, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

hmmm...I am not that well up really if it's electronica stuff, most of my friends are with house or techno. what style of music is it, as specifically as possible...maybe I could ask some friends and see though!

also Dubliners, this Saturday is sounding good...just have to make sure I'm not training in potential new job...probably won't be though. What time and place? Who is coming along?

Ronan, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

lunch on the 31st, eh?

Weasel Diesel, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:34 (eighteen years ago)

2pm in the Silk Road Cafe in the Chester Beatty. Oh, do come. Me and Kv and Rener and hopefully the Vicar and I don't know how to contact anyone else, so that could be it.

accentmonkey, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

i'm game...

Weasel Diesel, Monday, 26 March 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Savage, looks like it could be a good one. Milton, keep us posted. I'd come to something like that in all probability.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 08:17 (eighteen years ago)

There's a new shop near Harold's Cross that sells baklava and NOTHING ELSE. This has been a public service announcement.

Anyway, Saturday, woaahhh .... I understand DV hopes to make an appearance, but will not be there at 2.

rener, Thursday, 29 March 2007 10:23 (eighteen years ago)

DV is such a tease... Looks like I'll have to be in my glad rags, dinner for that birthday is ridiculously early!

kv_nol, Thursday, 29 March 2007 10:59 (eighteen years ago)

I hope to make an appearence, but I have... certain commitments. These may keep me away.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 29 March 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

Is it a hit? It's a hit, isn't it. I know you can't say. I'm right though, aren't I?

accentmonkey, Thursday, 29 March 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

DV is... the cleaner.

kv_nol, Friday, 30 March 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

That was lovely! Thanks ladies. Both parties were great and I didn't kill my sister so handshakes all round people!

kv_nol, Monday, 2 April 2007 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry I couldn't make it. I had to help my parents do something here and was 14.00 when I finished.

Ronan, Monday, 2 April 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

Well, never mind Ronan. It gave myself and Irene a chance to get to know Kv a bit better. Just us three.

Ew.

Kv, I am glad you didn't kill anyone at either party. How was the food at poshy posh restaurant?

accentmonkey, Monday, 2 April 2007 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's a shame, I wanted to come along, but was sort of important. Didn't do anything all weekend really.

Ronan, Monday, 2 April 2007 11:57 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry to hear it Ronan. The new G4ry Rh0des place is like a really big hotel lobby! There's even a table with a vase on it just perfect for brochures to be arranged upon. It was fairly buzzy really early on in the night and didn't let up. The food was fantastic! Honestly I can say that it's been a while since I enjoyed a meal as much as that. I had pork belly on champ with cabbage and roast glazed apple. Started was 3 tomato soups incl. best gazpacho I've had in yonks. Came to about 450 for 9 people including 4 bottles of wine so not bad at all price wise.

How was trad gig? Sorry for running off so suddenly at the end. I cut it all a bit fine. Ended up popping in to boots to pick up my stink so I'd smell right for the laydeez.

kv_nol, Monday, 2 April 2007 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

The trad gig's not happening til May - we were just getting our tickets in advance, in a rare fit of organisation. DV came to the pub not long after you left, the "job" having been "sorted".

rener, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

That's right.

Why the Googleguarding on GARY RHODES?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 10:22 (eighteen years ago)

Force of habit. Sorry to have missed you DV. Not really, more lovely girls for me! [/creepy]

Speaking of tickets, got my Electric Picnic tix today. 226 Euro. I am crying inside. When I get home I'll cry on the outside where no one can see!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

€226 for a ticket???? Oh no wait, I've just seen on the other thread you got two tickets. It's cheaper than Glastonbury, I suppose.

I like the way that the items on the Rhodes menu are named Repo Man style, i.e. "SOUP", "HADDOCK", "CHEESE" etc. No messin'.

rener, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

Nope, just one ticket. The food was so good though! I'd go back asap except I am poor after buying ticket! Youse are getting to Glasto? Well done!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

Oh no, no Glasto for us - too many Very Important Things to be done this summer. €220 for a ticket seems like a LOT, but maybe that's inflation for you.

Also, maybe I'm thinking about 1990s Glastonbury, when ticket price included a free cow and a special customised gig in your tent by Attila the Stockbroker. Ah, great days.

rener, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 12:49 (eighteen years ago)

I fancy a lunch again some time. Perhaps when Ronan can make it along. I had a very nice time on Saturday.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 13:29 (eighteen years ago)

Ditto. I would like a lunch that perhaps involved sitting on grass and watching people throw objects at one another. That's either the pavillion in TCD or in front of the divorce court... Needless to say I nominate the pav due to it's abundant supply of cheap cold canzzz!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

Kv, are you suggesting some sort of Pic-Nic? I kind of like the sound of that.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

Why Accentmonkey, I rather think that I am :)

kv_nol, Tuesday, 3 April 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

kv_nol -- show is on may 17th -- will post back with details once I know the location. I'm there for maybe three days, I'm half Irish from both sides of my family so I've been loaded down with names to look up, but I think I'm going to spend most of my time just driving around, seeing as much as I can...

Ronan I sent you an e-mail w/ info through ILM. I don't even know how to describe my stuff though, so maybe I'll just have myself a vacation

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

What show? What did I miss?

Also, if you're going to be in town, maybe you could come to our Pic-Nic. When are we having it?

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Just checking my schedule (sad but true I'm away on the weekend of the 21st, the 28th and the 5th) and I'd prefer the 19th as I could catch up with laundry etc.

Milton, will keep an eye open for it.

kv_nol, Thursday, 5 April 2007 08:29 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
People, no decision was reached. Who is on for the 12th in Iveagh Gardens if the weather stays this good?

kv_nol, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Me!

rener, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

Excellent.

Ronan & Kilian, chance to redeem yourselves!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

I'll try and make it, but I may have spying to do.

In other needlessly mysterious news - Kv_Nol, has the "stuff" arrived yet?

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yes, the 12th sounds great. Especially since I'm going to Vicar St later that night.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 07:18 (eighteen years ago)

No DV, [checks over both shoulders] the "stuff" hasn't arrived yet. Spying? Come on, it'll be sunny and it's not like we get enough of the stuff to take it that much for granted!

Vicar Street? Is that the trad thing of last time?

What to bring? Are we going down the route of wine and crisps or sandwiches and coffee? Guess which one I prefer!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 08:23 (eighteen years ago)

It is the trad thing we spoke of at our last meeting.

Hmm. We could go for wine and sandwiches, you know. Best of both worlds.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:09 (eighteen years ago)

Crisp sandwiches! SOLD!

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:23 (eighteen years ago)

DV and I were discussing how you never get CHAMPAGNE CIDER any more. Is this because students nowadays are rich enough to buy proper champagne for their piss-ups?

This is not to suggest that we should have champagne cider at the picnic, mind. I suspect it's like all stuff you drank as a student, i.e. it would taste rank if you were to try it now.

rener, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

Well we could add alka selzer to a can of bulmers. Would that be close enough?

I will look in to a cooler and some ice. It will be practice for the summer. Have decided not to go to Lovebox in July, 85 euro for ticket and I'm not totally convinced by it really!

Anyone here know of a good contact for Oxegen tickets? Bloody lineup keeps getting better and better :(

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)

Well we could add alka selzer to a can of bulmers. Would that be close enough?

If only I'd thought of this 15 years ago ...

Super Furry Animals and The Rapture are on the lineup for Lovebox, so I'm tempted. I went to Oxegen once when it was still called Witnness - MY GOD, NEVER AGAIN.

rener, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

I know but the line up is pretty great this year. It's only a DJ set by the rapture but yeah, SFA are definitely causing me second and third thoughts about not going :(

kv_nol, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

Looking out the window and hearing dire weather forecasts for next week. Back up plan, anyone?

kv_nol, Thursday, 3 May 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

I can't think of anything off-hand. I only ever eat lunch in the Chester Beatty nowadays when I'm in town, so unless people want to meet there, I'm out of ideas.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 3 May 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Could work. How's about we think of back ups closer to the time. I would love a picnic!

kv_nol, Thursday, 3 May 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Looks like showers people! So that puts paid to Iveagh unfortunately. Now we could try out Chester Beatty again or head somewhere new, I'm easy. I wouldn't mind somewhere that had pints available should the tea/coffee prove to be foul muck! Suggestions anyone?

kv_nol, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

Well, Chester Beatty has the advantage of being only around the corner from the Long Hall, should pint action be required for the drinkers. Does anyone know if the Market Bar does food during the day or only in the evenings? It might be alright, and I seem to remember their coffee was okay too, but I could be imagining that.

Wait, I don't live in Dublin, why the hell am I chiming in?

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

Market Bar does food during the day, I have eaten there many times. Avoid the mussels but the meatballs and patatas bravas are great. They also do cheese and things. Long Hall is v nice if a bit smelly!

If only we could do a poll! Market bar or Beatty? I am hungover so the Market Bar with it's chips and things sounds much nicer than healthy veggie option :)

kv_nol, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I'm happy to do that.

Can we tempt Ronan out, I wonder?

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

I've dropped enough hints all the place :)

Has anyone heard from Kilian? Should a webmail be sent perhaps or has he forsaken us?

kv_nol, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

For real Blast From Past action, we need Lara.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:49 (eighteen years ago)

Did she not make the transition either? We are a dying breed the celts of ILX...

kv_nol, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

I am slow to commit cos I don't know how I'm fixed (a) workwise and (b) healthwise. But I will see, that's the best I can manage unfortunately :)

Ronan, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

No worries. No commitment required. You know what we all look like anyway! So Market Bar from 2 on? That allows for hangovers etc.

kv_nol, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

You know what we all look like anyway!

Ha ha, not me! I've only met Ronan's brother.

Market bar from 2pm seems good to me.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:38 (eighteen years ago)

Right. This is happening tomorrow whether you like it or not! I'll be at market bar from 2 on. Trish, I'll try to remember your DVD! Was I meant to bring anything for anyone? Memory is v bad (tis the age, the age...)!

kv_nol, Friday, 11 May 2007 11:24 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry mateys, I have too many things to do tomorrow. Shame really, as I imagine the Market Bar is dead nice in the afternoon when it's not stuffed full of munters.

Have fun!

rener, Friday, 11 May 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm. Looks like it's just you and me, Kev. Oh well. If you remember the DVD, that's great. If not, I'll get it next time.

accentmonkey, Friday, 11 May 2007 12:47 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha Trish, I'll try to watch it tonight but it looks like pub after work so odds aren't good! Sorry, you'll have to hold off on Paul Bettany swooning for a bit longer. I'll see you at 2 so! We don't need them to have fun, we have booze and ting* :-p

*Patatas bravas and meatballs. Not w33d!

kv_nol, Friday, 11 May 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Market bar at 2.00pm? I hope to be there.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 12 May 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

hi dubliners. arrived midday yesterday & been wandering the streets. it is impossibly lovely here. so far really only had time for the natural history museum, book of kells, christ church cathedral.

playing a free show tonight at temple bar gallery if anyone wants to stop by and say ilx hi to bewildered-person-from-san-francisco.

Milton Parker, Thursday, 17 May 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

Are you 'wobbly' then?

Sadly I can't make tonight, I am too far away and didn't know you'd be here. I hope it's a good show though.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

Hello Milton Parker. I unfortunately cannot come to your show tonight. And I am a bit tied up over next few days (etc.). When are you leaving? Still around monday?

Actually, might be able to do lunch or something like that over next few days. maybe we could try to meet up by e-mail... drop me a line at dirtydotvicaratgmaildotcom ... you know the score.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

If you are around tomorrow evening, btw, me and Mister M are meeting a friend of ours for after work dinner, and then going on somewhere else, so if you're getting eats you could join us, if you like.

You can mail me also! I will get the webmail if you do it through here, or mail trishATperfectlycromulentDOTcom

accentmonkey, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

I might be able to make this on the way to dinner or after cinema. Have you any ideas of times?

kv_nol, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

Oh right, sorry just saw the 8 pm. Looks like I won't be able to make it until much later so I'll probably have missed you. I'll walk by on the way back and see what's going on. Any clue of what you look like to prevent embarrassment (a la colonel whatchamaycallhim at a fap a long long time ago :( )?

kv_nol, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going away this weekend, so no ILX pranks for me ... I hope you enjoy Dublin/Ireland, Milton!

rener, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

xpost, tonight I'm Freddy actually!

I _love_ Dublin, I'm walking around kind of awestruck, the whole city is really hitting me. I can't believe it but my schedule has me leaving tomorrow morning, on the bus to the airport at 530 -- I am not sleeping tonight. raincheck on dinner with more advance warning to accentmonkey & all on dubliners, I am really going to have to come back to this place...

kv -- I got glasses & a blue shirt and somebody just tolds me I look like Clark Kent and I'll be drinking (not a helpful descriptor I know)

Milton Parker, Thursday, 17 May 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry to miss you, Milton. It's always good to have visitors. Drop us a mail in advance next time you're over and we'll for sure hook up, and show you secret places that non-dubs don't know.

I can't think of any off-hand, but I'm sure we can invent some.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

"And here is Fitzsimons, a lovely place we like to keep to ourselves"

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 17 May 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, sorry to miss you, Mr/Ms Parker.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 17 May 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha @ Fitzsimons. Horrible place.

I got there too late Milton. The place was shut at 10:45! Hope it went well. Hope to catch you next time for pints and things.

what areas and budget and experience you looking for

id say most good restaurants will cater well for seafood options

mainly central and around sandymount. budget is fairly open; would like to spend a bit on a nice meal, though recs for cheaper places on the go also useful.

Do you specifically want trad Irish food, or...? I liked Glas a lot the one time I was in it, but that was a few years ago. L. Mulligan is reliable and has good vegetarian/pescatarian options. For non-Irish food, there's Andhra Bhavan, with branches on Marlborough St and Abbey St. I haven't been to Shaku Maku, but I hear it's great. And Gursha, an Ethiopian place, is also good.

I'm sure I've messed up some of those links.

wouldn't mind something trad but will depend how my wife feels, so those are really useful thanks!

I'm sure there are lovely fish restaurants in and around Sandymount, Blackrock, Dalkey, etc, but I just don't know any of them.

Crudo in Sandymount is a nice Italian seafood spot

It was pre-pandemic, but we enjoyed Forest Avenue, which had good modern plates with a great wine list by the glass.

oh yeah i had an absolutely amazing night there once years ago

tbh i find it hard to recommend places if I haven't been there in a whileunless im imagining it but im finding real consistency from year to year hard to find in dublin food options

Bar Pez is good for a small plates + wine vibe; Fish Shop is divisive (fancy fish and chips) but I like it; Two Pups for breakfast/brunch

What’s that chipper people go on about? I feel for cheaper options you should definitely attend one. There’s like Leo Burdock in Howth but it’s been forever since I was there tbf

yeah, Burdock's is bad now (maybe it always was?)

absolute daylight robbery too
