Hello again pals! It's Christmas time once more, and what better way to celebrate Christmas than by giving presents? Well this year I've decided to treat my girly to a long weekend in Ireland's fair city.
I've booked the flight tickets and everything, but this being the first time I've ever organised my first holiday I'm a little nervous. It's not until early February but I want to make sure I get the accommodation side sorted as soon as possible - any tips on booking hotels or B&Bs on a budget? Links?
What should I look out for in Dublin once I'm there? What should I avoid?
Also - it would be great to meet a few of Dublin contingent of ILX too at some point over the weekend so please let me know if you are interested in meeting up.

I'm such a fricking loser! No sooner do I write this message than I notice someone recently revived this thread: Attn: Dubliners
Am I allowed this one?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

This can be your special thread.

I don't know anything about booking hotels in Dublin. in terms of what to see and do when you come over... well that depends what you like.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Meeting up sounds like fun, but, like The Vicar, I know nothing about booking hotels and the like. I do know that a bunch of the city centre hotels do reasonable bed and breakfast deals around this time of the year, which only stop at Valentine's Day.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

word of advice to dubliners: don't go to this FAP. You'd organise the whole thing just to find that DogLatin himself doesn't fucking show up.

;)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the problem with that scenario, exactly?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

MRS??

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

When in February? I'll be there the weekend of the 11th and would be happy to partake of another Dublin FAP.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

does Snoop Dogg have any Dubliner in him?

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

MRS??

Well, technically not my wife, no.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

you could always propose to her while you're there!

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes, Dublin. City of Romance.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Always with the visiting.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

does anyone in dublin know a lady who was born there and who gave birth to a boy called Craig who now lives in Greenback and/or Brooklyn? I met Craig last week. The Irish heritage made beer (esp Guinness) close to his heart.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ken - are you IRISH? I saw a building in Cork called Teach An Chu - House of Chu!!!

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

aww a house of kisses!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

We are thinking of staying in a guesthouse in the Lower Gardiner area - is this wise? There's cheaper accomodation in Upper Gardiner St but I'm worried it might be a bit too far away from the life of the party. I also read on the web that these areas are slightly "seedy" - is this something to be worried about or just hyperbole?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

you make being seedy sound like a bad thing.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Upper or Lower Gardiner is grand, in terms of proximity to the city. What're the names of the two places?

Lower Gardiner is very mildly rougher (perhaps not even at all, nowadays) but I did say mildly, I'm sure it's no worse than anywhere in London.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

4nch0r Guesth0use, Ronan. It's on the Lower cos we figured it would be closest to Temple Bar and other great tourist attractions etc. PS - it would be ace to meet you if you're around Feb 3rd-7th...

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Lower Gardiner Street is grand. I don't know about Upper, but I lived in Middle Gardiner (just opposite the road to Summerhill), up until the point where our door was broken down and our stuff nicked.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 30 December 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! It's all sorted! Woohoo!

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

which end of Gardiner Street is "lower"?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 30 December 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The bit closest to the river, as is customary.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 31 December 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick and Lauren stayed on Talbot street and escaped the city relatively unscathed. Gardiner Street should be ok, if not so pretty. Leeson Street, Harcourt Street and Christchurch would have been my recommendations for what it's worth (nothing?). I should be about in February so it'll be good to meet the two of you. And O.Nate again.

Can anyone remember the Eamonn's address for andrew's birthday party tomorrow night?

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 1 January 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Irene claims to know it Lara. I will get her to text it to you.

I love how Andrew is not actually telling anyone where his party is taking place.

DV (dirtyvicar), Saturday, 1 January 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps he does not really want us to come?

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 1 January 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I will text it to you, Lara. See you tomorrow!

Dog Latin, I think the Aircoach blue bus from the airport will let you off right in Gardiner Street (or close enough). So it's a very good choice. The guesthouse itself sounds ... nautical. Yarrr.

rener (rener), Saturday, 1 January 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

What has become of the capitals?

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 1 January 2005 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll be grand, DL. Gardiner St. is where people stay. It's full of guest houses and hostels that used to be tenements back in the olden times. It's right smack in the centre of town and is on several of the bus routes to the airport, so you'll have no trouble finding it.

It will probably be quite noisy though, so you might consider earplugs.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Sunday, 2 January 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i'll be in Dublin too from this friday a.m. til sunday night. who will be around? Ronan?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 2 January 2005 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

dog latin wants to get back amongst the noise anyway, accentmonkey.

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 2 January 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yep I'll be here. drop me a mail Jed. dj deep is playing on Friday, I am not sure if I'll go but maybe.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 2 January 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It will probably be quite noisy though, so you might consider earplugs.

We'll probably be quite noisy...

dog latin (dog latin), Sunday, 2 January 2005 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 3 January 2005 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to meet any ILXrs - its just that Ronan is the one i have engaged with most on here so i instantly thought of him.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 3 January 2005 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I might be in Sligo, so you'll have to do without me.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 3 January 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
Ok, I'm off. Sleeping the night in Stansted and arriving in Dublin tomorrow morning! Yeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it turns out I have to work this Friday after all, so I'll be around for a pint after work, if anyone else is?

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

so am i to understand that Dog Latin has been and gone already? Bollix, DV and I were in London last weekend so missed all the action. Sorry to have missed you, DL.

rener (rener), Thursday, 10 February 2005 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

That's ok Rener, I'm sure there'll be a next time since we had a really good time.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 10 February 2005 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sad too.
