This is the thread where NA and Sarah McLusky maybe move to another city (Do not read if you find us excessively twee)

So, since visiting NYC, Sarah and I have been talking about moving out of Richmond. Not to NYC though, it's too krazy and huge and it's for sellouts (just kidding). If we did move, it would probably be in January, since that's when our rental lease expires.
We want something different. Richmond is nice, but for a "city," it seems small. It has a very conservative southern atmosphere, and there's little to no music scene (interesting bands or good places to play) to speak of (though Sarah might disagree with that). So I think we're looking for someplace bigger, but not huge; someplace not too far away (we both have family in the VA/DC area); someplace with a decent music/arts scene; and someplace with nice neighborhoods to live in, preferably in the city, not out in the suburbs.
The initial list of possible places was Philly, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, and Chapel Hill/Raleigh/Durham area. The latter has lost favor because it's further south and we kind of want to get out of the south, and although it's probably bigger population-wise, it didn't really seem bigger when we visited. Boston and Chicago are both pretty far away. Boston also seems to have generally negative views on ILX. I still kind of want to do Chicago, as it sounds great, but visiting family would be hard. Baltimore sounds odd, some people love it and some people hate it. My band has a show there in two weeks, so we're going to stay overnight and check it out then. Philly is currently the frontrunner, we're going to visit at the beginning of August and see what it's like.
This is not definite; we're going to visit some places and see if anything strikes us as great, but if not, we'll stay in Richmond. Neither of us hates it here.
We went on www.bestplaces.net and took the survey there. For both of us, it said San Francisco is the best. D'oh! The top from our list was Boston.
So...thoughts on any of those cities? (We have read ILX threads on all of the above) Thoughts about moving?

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

If you move to Chicago, I'll buy you both a beer.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I suggest Richmond in Surrey. It's just down the road from me, it's very leafy and posh and has all sorts of amenities. And only 20 mins from central London!

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you guys should do something original for once in yr life and move to Regina. Our happy mayor will come over every morning and make you breakfast for the first two weeks you live here, and then, if you're still living here in a year, he'll give you his firstborn child. He likes to have people come to Regina.
Plus, think of all things there are to do here. Regina's often called the Prague of the Prairies.
In the words of my friend Marco, a Mexican art dealer who's been here for the last 2 years "The art in Regina, it's...it's...polluting! It's everywhere!"

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicago is much cheaper than Boston or San Francisco, for starters.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to suggest Austin or Dallas but I guess that's out of the question.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Montreal!

(well, it's cheap and in eastern time.. yeah, there's all that Canadian customs crap, but still..)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

St. Louis!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yes st. louis!! And then you can start writing words like "thurr" and "herr" in yr posts!

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Williamsburg

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

boston. yes, it can be expensive. but it doesn't have to be a complete rip-off.
search: cambridge, allston, sommerville, jamaica plane, etc.
the music scene is solid. it has been for a long time. there are plenty of places to gig & always a decent show to check out.
NYC is a nice weekend trip.

but chicago is cheaper (from what i have heard)

good luck

kephm, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

listen to donut bitch and come to Montreal! I guarantee good times!

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So where's Chris V. with the mad Massachusettes knowledge? (aka Chris V to thread etc.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i got boston covered yo

kephm, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Cleveland is cheap (I'm paying 350 for a two bedroom apartment). Has lots of clubs with good bands coming thru. A very diverse population. Cheap booze. A great art museum. And cheap booze.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

We should just gather up all the ILX Nicks (us, Dastoor, nickn, Southall, etc.) and start a Nicktropolis somewhere off the Gulf Coast.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno, sounds a little "soggy biscuit " to me

kephm, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a reason Washington's not on your list?

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

DC is a little TOO close and a little too familiar to me. It's also really fucking expensive and we'd have to probably hang out with my parents more than I really want to.

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

If it were me, I would pick Chicago. There are just so many cool things about that city! And not terribly expensive either.

Lars (Nicole), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Cleveland...hmmm.

We've done some mild email correspondence with Chris re: Massachusetts, he wants us to move to Worcester.

Williamsburg! AAAAAH!

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i wondered why dc not on list. what about pittsburgh or louisville?

baltimore i wonder if you would regret not being in either dc or philly. ilxs ambivalence to boston is well documented, chicago might be ideal, sizewise though

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'all might like Louisville (which I hadn't even thought of 'til Gareth brought it up); affordable living, really solid music scene, Cincy St. Louis Chicago Indy Nashville Knoxville Memphis etc. all within pretty comfy driving distance, lotsa cool stuff to do, also lots of really lame stuff, but ain't all cities like that? It's a thought.

Find myself a city to live in... < /like one of my favorite songs evah>

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I highly recommmend Huntingburg, Indiana.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot to mention forgot to mention Memphis. Home of Elvis and the ancient Greeks.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Memphis is hot as balls right now though. And it's on the New Madrid Fault line, so it might go bye-bye in the next 50+ years, supposedly. But yeah Graceland!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

You should at least visit Portland. But only move here if you don't need to find a job.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Worcester is where its at. I'll be in Baltimore the first weekend of August.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Boston is better than everyone makes it seem. UR ALL GAY thats why.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, if you think DC is too expensive, I would SERIOUSLY rethink Boston.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Boston's one of those cities people tend not to move out of, in my experience, so bear that in mind.

But beyond that, I'm so incapable of rationally approaching the advisability of moving to the northeast that I'll recuse myself from the thread.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicago has twee lifesize porcelain cows!

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

People don't move out of Boston because they can't afford to!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly.

(Seriously, I think I mentioned this elsewhere, but my ex-boss moved from Boston to New Orleans even though it was more or less a 'lateral promotion' (higher rank, less significant place) and a pay cut, because the cost of living was so much lower in New Orleans and he was afraid if he didn't take the job he'd never leave Boston ... despite hating it.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm...

It's weird because I got a job in Chicago after college graduation but ended up turning it down to stay in VA near fam/NA. I had dreamed about living in Chicago for years. So now, all of a sudden, Nick is talking about us maybe moving to Chicago and it's weird. I mean, it's great because I could have him AND Chicago! But also, I'm really worried about being so far away from my family. I moved around a lot growing up and they were my only constant (uh, other than myself).
Of course, I always lived kind of far from one parent or the other, until this past year - now I live within a half hour of my mom, 3 hours max from my dad, 5 hours from one sister (but my parents are driving her up all the time) and 45 minutes from the other. When I told my mom and sisters, my one sister was like, "But how are you gonna help me raise my babies!!?" (and she doesn't plan on having any for several years as she's in law school)
So I dunno.
I'm trying to keep an open mind.
I just need to set dates to visit all these places; a bunch of mini-vacations. Like Nick said, we have mini-trip dates set for Baltimore and Philly. I'll get to work on Chicago!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, when exactly will you be in B-more? We'll be there July 25th PM and July 26th during the day, so we'll probably miss you, but maybe...

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, chris. What are you going there for? I mean, work, family..?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicago has twee lifesize porcelain cows!

Lexington has had twee lifesize painted porcelain horses on random street corners everywhere for like 2 years now!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Painted horses sound nice. We have dumb fish here.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Baltimore, home of the misdemeanor homicide." Meldrick Lewis

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicago has twee lifesize porcelain cows!

Houston, too. They did last time I was there, anyway. Inside the Williams Tower, there was one painted up like Spiderman and mounted on the lobby wall. Highly amusing.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Portland had cows. I really hate them. I hated the pigs in Seattle. I really really really hate them. A lot. Hate. Hate.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You missed the twee warning. Dude, it's right in the title.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM A TWEE MOTHERFUCKER AND I HATE THE PORCELAIN COWS.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

In Toronto they had moose, which is so much more annoying.

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Los Angeles had twee painted angels, but I think they're all gone now.

How important is the job market in the city? Do you two have specilized careers or the kind of jobs that can be done anywhere? If the former then I think this will limit your choices more than anything else.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I know some real estate agents in Portland and I live in a neighborhood which could be described as having kitty-lined streets: Think about it, Sarah.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Streets lined with kittens????? That sounds like Sarah's worst nightmare!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Lined, not paved.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

FEAR THE STREETS PAVED WITH KITTENFLESH

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Walking around in my neighborhood is like being part of the kibble parade and all the cats have come to watch it go by.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

move to State College, PA. We need more cool people here.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Although last night we were walking home and there were racoons. Which are like really big kitties who hate you.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course they hate us! They're nature's speed bumps!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

A Google image result for the search "kitten street"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What poor poor kitty hacked up that blue thing?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one is Satan?

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, Chris; I don't know.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i want to recommend dunedin but its very far away and it'd cost a lot of money and you'd probably have to marry some locals or something.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Go to Chicago, you guys. From what I know of both of you, it seems like your kinda place.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Baltimore is the best of the cities that you listed, but it may be too close to your family in the DC/VA area for comfort.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

For both of us, it said San Francisco is the best.

Just saw this. Hey, it's not as expensive as everyone says. I got a latte for only TEN DOLLARS the other day. I'd say where, but the whole city would be there in like, five minutes.

Vote Schwarzenegger!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there for the Red Sox/Orioles series. First weekend of Aug, so I'll miss you guys.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

PHILLY ROXOR BOSTON N BALTIMORE R GAY!!

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Dallas has painted winged horses.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I think a series of mini-trips is definitely the way forward. The thought of moving any further away from my friends & family scares me to death. I don't see them all of the time, but they are there, which is sometimes all I need. Good luck with the decision making!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Regina sucks, cause like you end up finding out that your internet acquaintances there won't go to your show 'cause they might get "bothered."

I think Philly's the best bet of your list.

hsetncil, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If you move to Chicago keep your eye out for that diddler Ed Rooney.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Baltimore is about the same distance from my family as Richmond is (about two hours), so that's fine. I don't mind being near them, I love my parents and like to visit, I just don't want to live in the same city where we would be expected to drop in every week or two. It would be further from Sarah's fam, but it would be closer than any of the other places we're considering.

Trying to figure out the logistics of a Chicago trip. We wouldn't have to get a hotel because my friend from high school lives there and said we could crash at his place. But we would have to fly, as a 12-hour drive or an overnight train ride would waste most of our time. And that's a lot of $$$. But we're working on it.

Tad, do you live in Philly?

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Steal your friends fathers ferrari and drive there.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

As for jobs, yeah, I obviously work in real estate, but I mostly I do administrative stuff which I could do in most any field. I'm also kind of interested in going back to school, in interior design perhaps, but to get in state tuition/grants, I would need to live in whatever state for a year first. But that's just a totally whack idea that I haven't given much thought to yet.

Plus, if I move elsewhere and wanted to stay in real estate, I'd have to retest for whichever state to remain licensed. And my boss pays all my licensing fees now... So I don't know that would be worth it.

My best friend from high school is moving to Madison this week (2-3 hours from chicago?) and she's really pushing for me to move to Chicago.

Portland sounds lovely. Maybe we'll move there later on in life! :)

Thanks for all the advice. I'm excited about our mini-trips.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

When are you taking a mini-trip to Boston? Come on, it must be done.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

How far does everyone live from their parents/siblings? I just emailed my sister that we're reconsidering Chicago and she was like, 'Don't you love us? We'd only see you twice a year!'

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I live in Portland; my parents live in New York City. I see them about once or twice a year. But we e-mail and IM and all that fun stuff: It is not as bad as it could be. (That's my mother and stepfather; my father and stepmother live in South Carolina, and I haven't seen them in many years, and it's, you know, a shame.)

Though I have to say, when I lived in a different part of NYC from my parents, I didn't see them more than a dozen times a year, if that often -- we'd mostly e-mail and IM and talk on the phone. So it wasn't that big a change for me.

Also my parents were excited to get another place they could travel to and visit, so. Consider that.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

When I moved back within an hour of my family this gave me the ph34r. I like to keep distance between them and me.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i live three miles from my mother and my father, I see them less now than when I lived 50 miles away. Thank god.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

(Also, Sarah, is your e-mail address your e-mail address? Um. You know what I mean. I would love to get one of your CD-Rs.)

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep. Email away, Chris P.

I love being near my family, to an extent. Whenever meetup plans are involved, I ALWAYS end up being in charge of coordating everything and it's a pain in my ass.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicago is just about two hours from Madison. There are lots of design programs here, although I'm not sure about interior design. There are lots of ad firms who pay temps well if you're worried about finding a job right away to pull you through.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, it's funny, you don't really come across as the Glengarry Glen Ross type on ILX. Are you ruthless in real life?

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, and she swears like Alec Baldwin.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

She dominated the entire NYC FAP! Wouldn't stop talking!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've lived near my folks for waaaay too long (i.e. always within 50 miles). I have no problems with them, but I think we all get along better now that we're 1200 miles apart. (Me in Seattle, them in Los Angeles). However, I'm not exactly the most family-oriented guy on the planet.. so just speaking for myself here.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

How 'bout a set of steak knives?

Sarah McLüsky (amateurist), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm moving to Chicago to get away from my family. Far far away. Hopefully if the phone bill gets steep enough, the drunken late-night phone calls from my mother will drop off. My girlfriend and I are both terrified of the woman. Terrified that she will pop up on our doorstep any day now and say, "Hi, just thought I'd come down for the weekend! Why are you looking like that? Do you still love me? You hate me, don't you?! You're trying to get away from me! You think I'm crazy, don't you??!!" God, that woman. What a nightmare.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I just had lunch with my mom. Didn't know I would be up until she called saying she missed her train could she come over straight away?...

Oh my god. OH My GOD, you guys. This was the first time I'd seen her since I emailing/talking on the phone about a potential mood. She got upset about the fact that we don't have a guestbedroom now. She was like, "Do you think maybe THIS time you could get an extra bedroom for when your family comes to visit? ANd how come you let your friend skdkdk spend the night on the couch sometimes and never invite me?" Well, cuz she stays over after late shows and why would my mom want to spend the night - or anyone in my family - when they all live so close by anyway??? And my mom is jealous of my friend? WTF??

And then she said NA is trying to take me away from my family so he can have me to himself.

But I was fiesty and by the end of lunch she had calmed down a bit. Ordered us a pina colada (virgin) to split and paid the bill which she NEVER does. So there's hope left.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha. hey & worcester is on the T (public train) even.
only two hours away ;-)
chris v. is soo worcester you guys don't even know.

kephm, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

sarah , it sounds like you need to remove yourself from the nest egg. family will always be there if/when you go back! good luck

kephm, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that a potential MOVE, Sarah? Because if so, that's my favourite typo ever. Also congratulations on weathering the storm.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

about a potential mood
Uh, MOVE obviously...

Sarah MCL (coco), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

How far does everyone live from their parents/siblings?

I live far enough away from my mother that I get along with her. I think it's to do with the way I was raised -- grew up in New England, but my father's from Alabama and my mother's parents travelled so much that we really didn't see anyone more than twice a year or so.

I only vaguely, in an "I've seen that in movies" sort of way, grok people who can live a day-trip away or closer to their family. (And I get along with mine fine, it's not like I have issues with them.) I'm only just starting to realize how different this can be from some folks -- my girlfriend is used to spending weeks at a time visiting her family, which would drive me batshit.

(I'm spending Christmas alone as a result.)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

And then she said NA is trying to take me away from my family so he can have me to himself.

Isn't that the whole idea?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear god, Sarah, move now!

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried to point out that one sister will probably be living in France in a few months, the other will graduate law school and who knows where she'll end up, and my mom keeps talking about leaving her job... So am I expected to just wait around until someone else moves first?

Hi.

I'm feeling a little better this morning, but last night I was grumpy. On the way home from class (about a 10 minute walk) I was thinking about how much I'd miss Richmond and it got me down. The cute old houses and tree-lined streets/ the little kitten at the corner that always lets me pet it/ the boutiques and eateries everywhere... But it's sunshiney now. And in about a week we'll go on our first mini-vacation to Baltimore...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

There are many other towns with kittens and boutiques and trees and eateries! Have no fear.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Andrew, for finding my thread!

My mom is still upset with me. I saw her briefly Sunday and she hardly talked at all. But I think she's turning round. She's insisting on picking up my laundry tonight, washing it, and bringing it back tomorrow night! And last night she dropped off a box fan for us to borrow (I was at class though).

So, our first mini-trip is this Friday. And I've been looking at hotels online for the Philly trip the next weekend. Anyone want to recommed a good (uh, relatively cheap) one?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I told one of my x 10 bandmates at lunch today. That went much better than I thought it would. He pushed for Chicago actually. He said Philly is dirty and Baltimore is boring. Then again, he's never been to Chicago...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

For Sarah and Kenan: I think it's a lot easier to find a two-bed in Chicago than a one-bed.

Over and out.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd still pick Chicago. But hopefully you'll get an idea of whether you'd like Philly and Baltimore or not from your trip.

Larcole (Nicole), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Got permission for a day off today towards my Chicago trip the last weekend in August. Woo hoo.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Decision 2003 update!:
Baltimore was just fine. The people we stayed with were supernice and had a really awesome house (which was SO cheap oh my god). We explored a few different neighborhoods and walked around downtown. In sum though, neither of us were crazy about it. I mean, if either of us got a good job there, we'd consider it but I don't think we'd move there just for the city alone.

NA's parents suggested Chapel Hill so we might re-open the research triangle as a possibility.

Next weekend: Philadelphia!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 28 July 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yo Sarah, just sent you an e-mail with some Philly suggestions

H (Heruy), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks very much, H! I've printed it out for the trip. :)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 28 July 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Philly was hottt. In more ways than one. First off, megathanks to H for the vast amount of useful information sent, it was extremely useful. We didn't hit any of your bars, we were more interested in seeing neighborhoods, but we did go to Astral Plane for brunch on Sunday, which was really really delicious.
We went to some really ritzy areas where we couldn't afford to live, some nice areas where we could afford to live, and drove through some shitty areas. Sarah liked Center City, I liked it too but also liked Roxborough/Manayunk and Bella Vista. Philly seemed to have an interesting character and was a good size (big but not intimidating). If we moved it would probably be to here. But now moving is kind of up in the air based on whether Sarah goes back to school or not. It's complicated. Probably more from Sarah later. Sorry I am insane.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 4 August 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, yes. I really liked Philly. It's only the second place we've looked, but I already had a soft spot for it in my heart (even though I'd only passed through there by train and bus). Yes, thanks to H and everyone who posted on the Philly threads and here. The people we talked to in Philly were very friendly and gave us tips on apartment hunting. It looks like we could easily find something in a decent area in our price range.

Nick drove almost the entire trip, but I drove the last hour and a half or so on the way home. Nick started falling asleep...

Sarah MCLUsky (coco), Monday, 4 August 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
Chicago was really nice. We had decided not to move anywhere, but now we are seriously considering moving to Chicago. It was really really nice. Fuck Philly. Just kidding. Philly was nice. But Chicago was better.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey guys, thanks for the e-mails. Sorry we couldn't meet up. Kind of a blah day, anyway. Good to hear Chicago made an impression on you, though. What did you do, besides ride the el all day long?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"ride 'the el' all day long"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, that's not quite the same as actually making a joke.

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"making" a joke.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

'"'

Chris P (Chris P), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey. Sorry I haven't posted much today. I'm busy at work and sick too. Blah.

We did a hell of a lot of walking in Chicago, going in cute used bookstores, second hand stores, visiting Reckless Records, browsing the gift shop at the Art Institute (the museum was about to close), walking down to see the boats, taking breaks in parks... Nick's friend works in the Sears Tower so we got passes to visit his floor (44th) to see the views. We went to a barbeque, a couple of bars, drank lots of coffee, people-watched... That sort of thing.

My best friend from high school came down with her boyfriend to visit for a bit too. They just moved to Madison.

I wonder if it's crazy for me to want to move to Chicago. I'm such a wuss. I get cold really easily. And it seems like lots of people move away from there after a year or so because the weather gets them down. Then again, maybe I just need to buck up.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Buck up! Last year's winter was really mild. (Then again, maybe that bodes poorly for this year.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the main reason we
are moving from madison
is the DAMNED WINTER

(and my wife grew up
here so if she's not used to
it by now...never! )

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are you moving to, Haikunym? How much longer will you be in Madison? My friends need to meet people!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

if we move (now IF)
it won't be till next summer.
are your friends nice friends?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 5 September 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Of COURSE they are nice. They live in a house with a third friend, and they are all in a band together.

Sarah MCLusky (coco), Friday, 5 September 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

but sarah that could
be half the people in town!
but it is still cool

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 5 September 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

are your friends more like the osmond family or the manson family?

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 5 September 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
(Two of those friends are wanna-be Pixies members, but a whole lot skinnier. The third looks like he's in an 80s metal band, at least last time I saw him...)

Anyway, we've been sending out lots of resumes. I might be having a phone interview with one place sometime very soon.

OH! And we're planning a yard sale for October 4th. So now I have a new project awaiting me at home.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish you both lots and lots of luck.

adaml (adaml), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't wait.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

For the yard sale? ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

If this sale is successful, we'll have a very minimalist apartment until we move. We're even hoping on selling the couch! I guess it will probably be a much cleaner apartment too, since bajillions of dustbunnies live beneath the furniture. And I will attack them with my dust buster!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

*runs*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

ARe you a dust bunny, Pink, or are you scared of my cleaning obsession? I can assure you that our apartment is NEVER completely clean. Or you can just ask my mom.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

So I'm guessing you guys won't still be around if I were to swing by in the days between Xmas and New Years, eh?

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

We might...we don't know exactly when everything's happening, but in my mind, we'll be in the process of moving between xmas and New Year's. But we'll see...

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 25 September 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

...ellipses...

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 25 September 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Good (freezing cold) morning, all.

Nick is on his way to Chicago! Wave, Tep. He should be passing through Indiana soon. He left yesterday afternoon, spent the night in Ohio, and is on his way to two job interviews today (with the same company). And he just found out about them around lunchtime yesterday! So it was all pretty crazy.

I went to spend the night at my mom's last night. It was nice. She did my laundry and made me orange tea. We looked at photos, and she gave me updates on my sisters' soap opera lives. Tonight she's going to help me price things and organize for the yard sale (which she's also helping me with tomorrow morning).

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Friday, 3 October 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Good luck Nick! Hope the yard sale goes well!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 3 October 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah good luck guys!

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 3 October 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

*WAVE*

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 3 October 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Not with that finger, sheesh!

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Good luck, Nick!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Time for the monthly update (just noticed it's been exactly a month since my last post here!)...

Nick took the first week of December off. He'll be searching for apartments then.

I had a phone interview that went really about a week ago. I should be going up there for an in-person interview in a couple of weeks most likely. I applied for 3 more jobs this morning.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 3 November 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, someone from the company I had the phone interview with left a message yesterday asking me to call back about my availability for a second interview. I'm calling back now to line it up. I'm scared stiff. Wish me luck!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

*crosses fingers* good luck Sarah.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, Pink. (yay! Someone reads the thread!)

So, I called and it turns out they're going to do another phone interview. It's weird because the for the first interview, the guy gave me an option of doing an in-person. He even said they'd fly me out there, but I took the phone option since it would be faster.

After that went well, he'd said someone would be calling back to set up an in-person 2nd interview, but this other guy I just talked to is planning on doing another phone interview as soon as I get home from work today. Blah. I hate phone interviews. They make me SO nervous, and I was thinking I was beyond that step already.

I'm getting sick of this notion that you have to be local to be hired. Lots of ads even say local candidates only. WTF?! If the economy is bad, companies should be encouraging the free flow of employees. Everything's much more efficient that way. Bastards.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

phone interviews can be good because you can do something like twiddle your thumbs or even lie down to alleviate your nervousness--things you couldn't do in person.

GOOD LUCK SARAH!!!

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh I'm sorry, i hoped you'd just get the confirmation of a time they'd fly you out. Still, try to stay calm during the interview & that may come next.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, amateurist. Actually, the first time I spoke with a rep from the company, I thought it was an interview, but then he ended it with, ok, when can we set up an interview... So then I had to interview with him again, basically. And this will make three.

I'm particularly nervous because this new rep asked me to clarify where I was in my transition phase re: moving to Chicago. I told him what I'd told the other guy, that I am waiting to get a job before I move, but that I'm very flexible and only need the standard 2 weeks notice. He sounded a bit dissapointed at my response. But let me say again, WTF?! Are people just expected to move to new cities without already having jobs lined up?

(x post - I thought so too, Pink)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If ever you two don't feel like driving straight thru to Chicago and need a place to crash I can put you up for the night (I'm in Cleveland off of I-90). Not sure what route you take so this offer could be worthless.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks for the offer. I'm not sure exactly what we'll be doing when we actually move (with the Uhaul and everything). We have friends outside of Pittsburgh so we might stop there. But I don't know if we're going to do it in 2 days or 3.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a tough call sarah, I mean i wouldn't suggest moving to chicago without a job but it sure sounds like it would make things easier. Would you have enough cash to tide you over for a bit?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Are people just expected to move to new cities without already having jobs lined up?

Yeah, then you can be like my friends Rachel and Ben when they moved here from San Diego -- having no money and no jobs, they crashed at various people's apartments for a month, and then at one dude's (very patient) parents' house in the suburbs for another month. Needless to say, we were happy when they finally found jobs.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, you could do what I did and immediately start temping when you get here, but that was three years ago and temp work is much, much spottier now.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

temping may indeed be the way to go. you could spk to temp agencies beforehand.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

We definitely wouldn't crash anyone's pads. We both have enough saved up to be ok for a while and could always get hourly and/or temp jobs to pay for groceries and rent until we got salaried ones.

Basically, that's the back-up plan.

I just don't understand the mentality of hiring locals only. It's pure snobbery! If they don't want to provide relocation expenses, that's understandable, but excluding outside candidates completely is very limiting.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, are you sure that maybe you aren't overanalyzing his "seeming a little bit disappointed" because you're nervous?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. Dunno.

I am going to try to put it out of my head until I get home tonight. No need freaking out all day.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I moved before I had a job, but I had a fat redundancy cheque to tide me through the 9 (nine) months before I found something that wasn't temping. I don't regret it in the slightest but... it could have worked out easier. And I would still have the fat redundancy cheque.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm starting to remember I have this interview in less than 3 hours. It's weird. I can be very confident most of the time and then something like an interview comes along and I feel like a little mouse.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

But little mice are so cute!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

But they don't get hired as Production Assistants in Chicago!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course they do! Mice are the backbone of Chicago's job force!

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 November 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

oh you're looking to be a pa? jeez. there is much less production in chicago now than ever before.

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 November 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hope you got on ok sarah.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 6 November 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, are you looking to be a PA in book publishing? Mrs Nordic might know a few relevant people, seeing as that's her field, and she's (sorta) from out there. I could ask.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 November 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, nordicskillz, but the title is misleading. I would be working in an interior furnishings dealership. They do most of their projects for the US government.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

good luck.
i vote for moving first, if you have some $$ saved up, which you do...
or one of you move first maybe? thats what me and my gf did once

kephm, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

also, outside of the cat luv thing, i do not fond you guys twee at all.peace

kephm, Thursday, 6 November 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

oops i read "pa" and just presumed you meant for a film

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

nick did you apply for the job i emailed you about?

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordic, um, I'd actually like to work in publishing, so any leads from the Mrs. would be appreciated.

Yeah, I did, never heard anything. Oh well.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

haha that's totally typical. they probably haven't even posted a job listing yet even though i told them i was leaving in -july-. you probably don't want to work there anyhow...

good luck.

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
EEP!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's much less to worry about, isn't it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

*cough cough*

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I was SAYING...

;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Hairball?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 00:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, nordicskillz! I am still nervous, but happy too. :-) When I quit, I won't have to worry about my boss giving a good recommendation (even though I still plan to go about it professionally).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Professionally" = Doing number one on his desk instead of number two.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, NIck was just saying the other day he didn't know the difference b/w number one, number two and number three. Maybe that's why he brought it up..

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

What's number three?!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I want to know. Something girls do, I guess.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it related to make-up?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh. Boys do it too. But enough about that.

I've been looking online at apartments all day. Yippidy Skippidy.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

*I* don't know what number three is, either!

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

um, it's, um, like 1 and 2 put together. My mom calls it 'maria.'

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you looking at apartments that are listed online (with pix, etc.) or looking at, like, the Chicago Reader's classified ads (or whatever)? Because I've always found just fancy high-faluting apartment complexes when looking online, and it doesn't give a good sense of what's actually available (or the sort of places I'd rather live).

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

And the wind she cried...

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWW!!!

That is the most excessively untwee thing I've ever heard!

Citizen Kate (kate), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking the same damn thing!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(To both Kate and Chris's posts!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

THAT'S NOT A MAGIC NUMBER

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think diarrhea still counts as number two!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I can no longer distinguish this thread from the action sequence thread.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

In response to Chris:

All over. I've been checking out craigslist chicago, spacefinder, apartmentzone, and anything else I can find.

I know what you're saying though. I've found that if there are pix online, we can't afford it. At this point, I'm printing out everything that looks like it might be good and contacting those with email addresses. I figure Nick can set up appointments for his week there as much as possible beforehand.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah, do you know what neighborhood you would want to live in? (Especially now that you have a job, have you figured out the trains?) Also, do you have friends in Chicago who might live near that neighborhood who could keep their ears to the ground?

You'll probably have more luck wandering around once you get there -- the research you're doing now will probably give you a sense of how much rents are in different neighborhoods, but I wouldn't be disappointed if you don't get an actual apartment until you get in town.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 21 November 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going up the first week of Dec. to go apt. hunting. Part of that will be wandering around looking for signs in windows. That way we'll have something ready when we move. We're looking in Bucktown/Wicker Park/Ukranian Village primarily, but we're open to other areas.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

wicker park is Ovah

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Time for a revival beeyotch.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The job is actually in the Jefferson Park area, but that's off of the blue line. I'll have to scope it out to see if it's a walkable distance (b/w the el and the office).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Nordic, um, I'd actually like to work in publishing, so any leads from the Mrs. would be appreciated.

Oh shit sorry, Nick. I only just saw this - I will ask for sure!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're looking at those neighborhoods for Blue Line convenience, I'd suggest you also look at Logan Square, which tends to run a bit cheaper than Wicker Park/Bucktown. (My brother just moved to Logan Square after not being able to find anything in his price range in WP.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, people have been repping Logan Square to us, so I'll check that out too.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like Logan Square. Good mexican food around there, nice family vibe, pretty hip and attractive, near the train.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 21 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

wicker park is Ovah

all the more reason for them to move there

oops (Oops), Friday, 21 November 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

jefferson park is stuck in the immediatel postwar era, its kind of charming if you get past the fact that most of it is totally unsightly.

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 22 November 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick is in Chicago right now looking at apartments. He just looked at one that was on the crappy side, but the realtor that showed it to him said Joan Cusack lived around the corner. John must visit her sometimes, huh? So I told Nick that apartment would be bad for our relationship.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What neighborhood is that?

J-Park is full of cops - it's cop city.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you know where it was, Sarah? For some reason, I'm suspicious of Joan Cusack having an apartment in the area where Nick is looking.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean, not that Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village/etc. aren't perfectly nice neighborhoods. But they're where members of Tortoise live, not Academy Award-nominated actresses.)

That one was in Wicker Park I believe. Perhaps she lives in one of the fancy shmancy mansions there? I dunno where exactly.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

mansions in wicker park???

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Victorian ones. Perhaps that's not called Wicker Park? I thought it was... We walked around these HUGE mansions with large yards...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

hm...this is where i admit to not being as familiar with w.p. as i might have made out. but i always had the idea that the housing stock there was very "popular"...i.e. no mansions...but of course now there are luxury lofts and so on.

lots of mansions in hyde park...on the other hand...

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 3 December 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

there are some nice big houses (I wouldn't call them mansions - you'd be more likely to find mansions in Hyde Park or Kenwood oh yeah amateur!st just said that, duh) in Wicker Park.

hstencil, Wednesday, 3 December 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe we define mansions differently.

But anyway, we got an apartment! It's in Wicker Park, about a block from where Ukranian Village starts. It's reserved for us - they just need to run our credit checks. And it isn't that far from the El. BOO YAH.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 December 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Congrats, Sarah! (I'll congratulate Nick when I see him tonight!)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 December 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

congrats. one day i will be back in chicago and we can party hard or, preferably, partly quite softly but sincerely.

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 4 December 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 December 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Taken from realty company's website:
One of the more popular attractions to Wicker Park is Hoyne Street, better known as the mansion district, the area in which the entrepreneurs choose to build their magnificent single family homes. The architectural styles they choose from become excellent examples of French Chateau, Queen Anne, and Baroque among others. It is for this reason that Wicker Park eventually found its name on both the National Historic District list as well as the Chicago Landmark District.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

NA., Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

*mwah! mwah! mwah!*

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm crazy too, but you don't see me shouting all over the internet about it! ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we have an apartment. They are still bugging me about financial stuff, they want a copy of my bank statement because I don't have a job yet, but they're supposed to fax the contract over tomorrow for us to sign. It's pretty nice, 2 bedrooms, some fancy woodwork, good location (10 minute walk from El) so that's cool. Fairly expensive (at the top of the range of what we were willing to pay) so I better get a fucking job soon.

NA (Nick A.), Sunday, 7 December 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

how much is it per month out of curiosity?

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ergh, I'd rather not say for fear of being ridiculed for overpaying or something. Let's say high by our standards, (we're paying 150% what we pay in Richmond), but probably not by Chicago standards. We have ritzy tastes. Not really. But good location and good neighborhood and two bedrooms were all important to us, which add up to higher rents.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 8 December 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i wont ridicule you*

* n.b. i might ridicule you

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 8 December 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in a great mood today! Last night, Nick drew a little diagram of the apartment layout. We won't really have much in the way of furniture for a while as we've been desperately getting rid of as much of it as possible. :) However, I am very excited about putting up this old clock I took from my grandmother's. I always loved it growing up. It is a sunburst clock and VERY 70s. Ok, so, it needs some repair but it's lovely.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i might have some furniture for you if you can wait four months

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 8 December 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course. And why's that?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 8 December 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

because thats when ill probably be back in the states

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 8 December 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, just to keep this thread updated - we finally signed the lease today! We're ordering the truck tonight and packing some more.

Also remember to register with the local DMV! The DMV is fun!

Actually, I hate moving. Best of luck!

two months pass...
This is the day when I update all of the threads with my name on them.

So, Chicago is fantastico and sometimes I even forget that some day the weather will be nice too. But the last couple of days it has gotten up into the high 30s at least!

A bunch of great shows are coming up. My attempt at finding bandmates has been a bit unsuccessful, but now Nick and I are thinking of just having our own band. So, we'll see.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 20 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't forget the Chicago FAP Band Experience!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

jaymc, do you want to play keyboards for our real band?

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

can i play drums for your imaginary one?

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"chicago transit authoritwee"

:-)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, the offer is appealing, certainly. But I'm worried I wouldn't have time for two bands and I'd end up flaking out on you.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 20 February 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

oops, do you really play drums?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

yup

oops (Oops), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Can I write songs for your band?

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Not that you guys are incapable, just that I don't live in Chicago.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 20 February 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, we can be your puppet band, Chris. Can you promise us stardom?

Oh, wait. Are you gonna make us where matching outfits?

Oops, are you in a band already? Do you have your own set??

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a song I wrote in junior high about a girl who kills her father because he wont let her go to the prom, but his zombie corpse comes back and pulls her head off before her date gets there, just in case you're interested...?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

make a 12" ext-dance remix, and you've got a deal.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 21 February 2004 01:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I just like the idea of writing songs for other people. You don't have to be my "puppet band".

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 21 February 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the matching outfits would be pretty hot, though. Nick would look AWESOME in the dress with the cowboy fringe that I'm thinking of.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 21 February 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Cowgirl fringe, actually.

I still think about the Astral Plane restaurant in Philly sometimes. That was a really good breakfast.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you saying we should have moved there instead? Just because of that restaurant?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

How are you both settling in? Does it feel like "home"? Have you made lots of friends?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Just this morning, on the way to work, I was thinking about how I really like Chicago and am actually starting to think of it as my own. (And I'm usually in a bad mood when I drive!)

Well, we had a birthday party for Nick. It was an eclectic mix. The highlite of course was the presence of ILXors. But anyway, it made me happy that we really could drum up some sort of party in our new apartment.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

We have lived in a new city for almost a year now and it feels like home. I kind of miss the days when it seemed new and weird.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff in Delaware soon to be back in CHICAGO, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick, We should celebrate.

I still love Chicago a lot, but even more now that I know it a little better. It was a flirtacious love at first, but now it's more of a going steady kind of love.

My favorite thing about Chicago is a tie between the music scene and weekend brunches...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I am really glad that we moved. It kinda shook things up a bit, especially getting me out of a boring job (and into another boring job, but that's another story) and into a very different situation, living in a big city, living in the Midwest, meeting new people, etc. I love Chicago.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bongo Room is still in operation, but I don't like it. We've been there a couple of times but: 1. I am very impatient and hate waiting for a table (though I am willing to deal with this for Victory's Banner); 2. It's overpriced; 3. The food is too fancy and WAY too sugary for me; 4. It seems like the kind of place where middle-aged ladies from the suburbs come into "the city" to go to brunch.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

what problems do you have with middle-aged ladies from the suburbs??

I don't have any problem with them, we just have different tastes. Like I don't typically want hazlenut fudge french toast with almond-infused cream and macadamia nuts first thing in the morning. THAT IS NASTY.

I've come to realize that the worst thing about the city (at least the parts that I usually find myself in) isn't the crime or the concrete to greenery ratio or the traffic, it's the overabundance of 20-somethings.

craggy jones, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this might be the wrong place to look for sympathy on that particular grievance.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Craggy, Are you are regular poster/lurker? You should come to FAPs and give us some of your wisdom. I'm assuming you're older, but maybe you're a teen who hates 20-somethings?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

the thing at the bongo room is, well, formerly-decent eggs benedict. I think the trick was to go in pairs, so one person could get the eggs benedict and the other person could get one of those ridiculous sugar-things, which yes, are not breakfast (see: antrim / verificationist) -- and then half, half, split, everything happy. the wait was actually one of my favorite things about it, which is to say that i only ever went there during summer: it was kind of fun just hanging out on the curb having a smoke with hungover fashion models.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Were they hungover fashion models or freshly-primped middle aged women? The line can be very thin. And I don't think I like eggs benedict.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a twenty something who hates twenty somethings! haha not really. I just don't like the kind of neighborhoods and atmospheres that are created when the ovewhelming majority of the population of an urban area are 20 somethings. The competition to be cooler and hipper than your peers reaches cutthroat levels, and the whole community seems to be obsessed with this and geared around it. Maybe it's not, though. Maybe it's just that I see those aspects and they annoy me so much I can't see anything else.

craggy jones, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't like eggs benedict? And to think I ever thought you were a good person!

There used to be an out-all-night model contingent there, but that was when Wicker Park was still on whatever cusp or edge or whatever it was trembling on. Possibly now it's just turned all the way over and become the Chicago equivalent of a bridge-and-tunnel spot, which seems to be Wicker Park's new purpose. I remember when they put in that restaurant Spring on North -- suddenly all summer there was fish-dumpster smell everywhere, plus there'd be all sorts of fancy older types blocking the sidewalk waiting for the valet and then giving you dirty looks if you tried to walk past.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

craggy -- You should move south of Roosevelt Rd. and then brag about it all the time.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't remember exactly what eggs benedict are, but if I remember correctly, they: 1) are not vegetarian, and 2) involve something creamy, perhaps a creamy dressing or sauce, and I am typically averse to creamy and/or milky foods (double entendre in 5, 4, 3...).

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd never had eggs benedict before two weeks ago!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Eggs benedict is awesome. I'm a sucker for a food whose name has the descriptor follow the main ingredient. Salsibury steak: meh. Beef Wellington: awesome.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX: I'd Rather Be Surrounded by Hipsters Than Meatheads

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, you know what, fuck it, there is NOTHING annoying about living in Wicker Park. Maybe I'm a pseudohipster or a wannabe-trendster or whatever, but I love it.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surrounded by Mexicans. As a stark reminder of this, I just walked into a corner cafe, ordered the chicken soup, and was served something completely alien to me. Potatoes, ok. Carrots, I can see that. Drumsticks and a wing, didn't see that one coming. Livers and necks... Jesus, how do you eat a chicken neck? It's full of tiny vertebrae. Do you put the whole thing in your mouth and spit out the bones like grape seeds? Am I even supposed to eat the neck? Will everyone else be staring at the weird white boy trying to eat a -- haha -- chicken neck?

So I guess my neighborhood isn't that hip. On the upside, chicken liver is tasty.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I know you didn't intend to split the entire world into two camps, meatheads vs hipsters, so I don't need to point out that both are undesirable as the foundation of a community. Still, I think I'd go with the meatheads.

I'm not that hip, so I'm thinking of becoming a meathead. Where do I start?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking of buying a baseball cap to wear, but people might mistake that for a trucker hat and think I'm a hipster...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not record a blase dance-punk song about it on your 4-track and then leave it on her answering machine?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost, or is it?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

haha xxxpost

It's counterintuitive, but I say you should start with a trucker hat. For a while people will think you're just trying to be a hipster, but if you start peppering your speech with witless vulgarity, they'll catch on before too long. Also, quit your band immediately.

Why meatheads are better than hipsters:

1)Sometimes you just want to get fucked up and watch sports.
2)A meathead will most likely have yo' back. A hipster would be too busy attending to his/her urine-soaked $200 jeans.

craggy jones, Tuesday, 28 December 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ah, sorry N, didn't know you weren't fond of the animal products. now that i think about it eggs b is also terrifically treyf, what with the ham and the creaminess right on top of it. i kinda think it's the perfect dish, though, when done well.

the only times i was ever "annoyed" by wicker park were as follows: (1) the actual moments when shops i liked closed and were replaced by the same shops except three times as expensive; (2) any friday or saturday night when i wasn't personally doing anything exciting and walked to flash taco for food and found the corner choked with drunken good-time-having visitors (this would have happened anywhere, of course); (3) the first weekends of spring, when the same thing happened during the day, in a bothersome slow-walking street-choking trixies-in-booty-shorts way; (4) whenever josh hartnett and/or the real world were complicating foot traffic.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you like Victory's Banner, Jeff? See, a big part of the enjoyable brunching is that I can just roll out of bed and walk to my favorite places nearby. If you join us, that means either we have to go another neighborhood, or you do, or both. Where do you like to go?

I do want to try Tweet Let's Eat after we were foiled a couple weeks ago by it closing at 2 PM. (It's on Sheridan and Argyle, roughly.)

milkwaukee WI

green bay WI
minneapolis MN

los angeles CA

denver CO
somewhere in washington state that isnt seattle
maybe somewhere with easyish access to NYC that isnt NYC

definitely no:

ive spent a shit load of time in sf and the bay - i was born out there (relocated to the east coast @ 4 tho) and all my relatives are there - i go out at least once a year aaaaand i kinda hate it - particularly sf just weirds me out - cant really put my finger on it - the only reason it comes in ahead of denver is cause it has better restaurants and movies and oceans and stuff

pretty much everything from 5 down is totally vetoed based on weather or mid-westerness

n/a, Thursday, 3 January 2008 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

sunny, violent as in a lot of random violent street crime. but that probably has more to do with where i wind up when i'm up there than anything else, you don't have to go to crack central in chicago to see a good punk show. there are some very nice areas of milwaukee as well. they have better record stores up there too and the thrift/vintage stuff always has good finds because there aren't boutique owners combing the places for their own stores.

chicago kevin, Thursday, 3 January 2008 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

i really can't quibble with my list...

San Diego, California California’s First City

Orange County, California Live The California Dream

Little Rock, Arkansas Where America Comes Together

Las Vegas, Nevada Entertainment Capital of the World

Baton Rouge, Louisiana The Cajun Capital

chicago kevin, Thursday, 3 January 2008 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

search anchorage: never hot, tons of kids cause people spend winter fuckin, great outdoor options, not as cold as mpls and maybe chicago in winter, midnight sun is actually pretty cool, dividend every october 15, beautiful back yard, no houseflies

destroy anchorage: arts/music scene is fairly dismal (no one tours there), winter lasts a looong time, there is no spring/fall, politics is fucked up, kind of expensive because many things have to be imported, going anywhere significantly different requires jet engines, nfl games start at 9am, lots of mosquitoes

never hot - love it
tons of kids cause people spend winter fuckin - love it
great outdoor options - nice
not as cold as mpls and maybe chicago in winter - good i thought i was going to die just walking a few blocks one chicago january
midnight sun is actually pretty cool - this could be bad or crazy inducing. how long does it last for?
dividend every october 15 - i dont understand what this means
beautiful back yard - alright
no houseflies - good too
arts/music scene is fairly dismal (no one tours there) - no diff from where i am now
winter lasts a looong time - yay!
there is no spring/fall - id miss fall but gfuck spring. spring is just the march to the torture chamber of summer
politics is fucked up - not a citizen so i dont care
kind of expensive because many things have to be imported - true
going anywhere significantly different requires jet engines - good because i hate driving anywhere (scared of interstates)
nfl games start at 9am - kid gets us up before then anyways
lots of mosquitoes - no diff from here.
no ladies - no m y problem.
eaten by bears - preferable to interstate death.

in high summer, the sun sets ~midnight in anchorage and rises at maybe 3:30am? it's maybe still light enough to read outside all night though. you get dark curtains and get used to it. if the temp reaches 70 F, everyone will bitch about the heat wave.

in deep winter the sun rises ~10:30am and sets at 2-something pm. peeps can have issues with this. also, i like snow and winter a lot, but having snow on the ground for six months can become grating.

chicks: i did okay, plus some friends got married and are still there. up yr game

sunny obv wants to live in Denver

gabbneb, Thursday, 3 January 2008 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

there are probably tons of places I'd be ok with living in at least for a while, but where do I actually want to live? NY, LA, SF, DC and maybe Seattle. If not core, then metro.

gabbneb, Thursday, 3 January 2008 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

as in, "That guy thinks he's so core, but really he's just metro."
