Well I'm right down the street, Colin Meeder's in town, Chris V. is going to be in town, and maybe we can scare up some lurkers, I dunno. This is where we chatter about what we might be able to do on the first weekend of August in Baltimore.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we go to the Wharf Rat?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I drive your car?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha. Sure.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm in!

PS it might end up in a ditch, sorry in advance.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It'll be my birthday the first week of August - and I will be in Baltimore. Awesome.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sweet, I think this adds up to Max's on Broadway (UPSTAIRS!!!)

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Dig it, you other saddos can webcam us

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I say we do Fells Point -- dinner at John Stevens, then hit Max's and various other fabulous places.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

McCabe and Gardner to thread!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I love The Wire!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in for the Fells Point Colin Meeder expedition, assuming that Millar doesn't take the reins and lead us to the Baltimore equivalent of Boat. Oh wait, since I'm the out-of-towner, looks like I can be the one directing traffic.

stillbitterafterallthistime (Mary), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Baltimore has no equivalent of Boat.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

They have no jukeboxes anywhere near that indie

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

What about that Jamaica restaurant right near the Charles Theater that is obv. a drug front? I had some good stories from there a few months ago.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm safe then. Count me in. I love Baltimore. Will this be on a Sat. or what?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Fells Point...Sound Garden...mmm....

*my credit card recoils in horror*

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to wait until we can get Chris V to weigh in, I wager those of us down here are more flexible

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

A bit old, but Baltimore by Night

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/local/longterm/music/balto.htm

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

this might be doable, depending on the timing and logistics of course.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Give me a more specific date and I might be able to work with you. (CSC is offering me work for the next 2-3 weeks solid.)

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday the 1st or Saturday the 2nd. I could swing both nights if we need to accomodate people or want to have extra fun.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The Baltimore equivalent of Boat is the Mt. Royal Tavern, but the juke box is even cooler.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

So many of those places in the Post article are closed now, and the Ottobar didn't even exist then.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks for the dates, millar. the 1st of Sept. is labor day, yes?

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

We're talking abt August though

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, ok. thanks for clearing that up!

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This is place is the SHIT.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

cool, thanks! what are the cool coffee shops and bookstores?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary! You will come with me! Yay! We should think of clothes now so I can remember to wash them.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I could do it anytime after aug 10th.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a beach we could go to? I really want to go to the beach. Also zoos and amusement parks but if that can't be worked in I'll survive.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

There's Ocean City, Dewey and Rehoboth, of course. (I'll leave my Delmarvic Dreaming, and its Colonial Corollary, for another thread.)

hmm. I'm thinking about being in Philly for a icthyological event on the evening of the 31st. And I'm hoping to spend a weekend in DC some time in August. And Balto is on the way. Will probably never happen.

the "in the home of the terrapins" FAP?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Beeeeeaaaach here I come. I miss going to the beach now that Rockapulco has been all torn up and worked on :(

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The ocean is about two hours away and there is no public transportation available. There are, however, seedy and cool little beaches on the Bay or the Patapsco or whatever.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not picky!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

There is an acquarium. I don't remember Ocean City, Rehobeth and Dewey being very bling bling from my childhood. I vote for the seedy beaches that Colin recommends. Or we could go to Annapolis and looks at the Navel cadets.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

rehoboth beath used to be as philly's version of fire island/provincetown. i.e., very gay.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

or that's what my uncle jake told me.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Rehoboth was my mom's favorite beach. We preferred Virginia Beach.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom now summers at Fenwick Island.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i failed at this

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

how did you fail?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought i had tried to arrange a fap. maybe that was another thread. maybe i failed at remembering to attempt a fap.

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

that's an elvis song I think

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I did not know there are any ILXors in Baltimore. All I'm saying is I want CRABCAKES! I will be there Aug 2, at Camden Yards for the Sox/Orioles game which starts at 7:05, hopefully the Sox will make quick work of them and I'll be done by 10. I will be there with my attorney and accountant, who are two of the nerdiest guys you'll ever meet. I do want to meet up with you all! Whats close to Camden?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah and I will have just been there the weekend before, but maybe we can make a special trip to come back up for a FAP. My band will be playing at the Talking Head in Baltimore on the 25th (Fri) with Slow Jets if anyone will be there then.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Sarah and I will have just been there the weekend before, but maybe we can make a special trip to come back up for a FAP. My band will be playing at the Talking Head in Baltimore on the 25th of July (Fri) with Slow Jets if anyone will be there then.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, you didn't try to arrange anything in that thread! But you should come to this FAP.

I don't need a beach to be very bling, I need it to be very beach. I haven't been all year and it's starting to affect my soul to the point where I might just go to Orchard Beach, by myself, and be sad.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

This one I really will be coming to. Be prepared.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Will you seduce me with the Prince Charming?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Possibly. I suspect I shall be arriving in Baltimore around 2pm or so. Im heading to NJ to meet up with my attorney on Friday and then heading to Baltimore Saturday morning.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I am down for the crabcakes.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll obviously need to dance.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll dance if we find a bar that has "Common People" on the jukebox.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, I forgot that's the weekend we were planning to go check out Philly. So I guess count me and Sarah out.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

If we find a bar that has "Back in the New York Groove" on it, I may just shit my pants.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to play host, or at least give the benediction, but I will be wiggling my toes in the sand elsewhere in early August. What do you want to know? It's been a while since I trolled jukeboxes, but I might be of some help otherwise.

Lee G (Lee G), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"New York Groove" comes on=I am a stripdancing machine.

Tell us everything, Lee, I've never been to Baltimore.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, here's the five-cent tour:

Attractions:

- American Visionary Art Museum (Key Hwy., at the foot of Federal Hill)
- American Dime Museum (midtown, Maryland Ave.; sideshow history, some of it fake)
- Walters Art Museum (Mt. Vernon; a slight edge over the BMA right now, and in the most beautiful urban neighborhood in town)
- Baltimore Museum of Art (near Johns Hopkins University; an okay contemporary wing as well as lots of Impressionists and other more standard fare)
- the Inner Harbor is mainly Pizzaria Uno/Discovery Channel Store by the sea; avoid unless you're dying to visit the National Aquarium

Shopping (music/books):

- Soundgarden (Fells Point, good all-around indie-ish CD store, some new vinyl)
- Normals Books and Records (31st Street, near JHU; used media mecca)
- Atomic Books (36th St., Hampden; oddball lit, comics, zines, etc.)
- Additional music scrounging picks: Reptilian Records (Fells Point; punk, metal, anything loud); Modern Music (Canton; electronic/DJ); Music Liberated (Mt. Vernon/downtown; chaotic crowded hip-hop/dance store, and an excellent source for Baltimore "club music")

Eats:

First of all, forget the crabcakes and go for the steamed crabs. It'll be high season in early August, and that's the true Baltimore souvenir eating experience you want. I would recommend Captain James, the restaurant shaped like a ship nestled between Fells Point and Canton (Fleet St.?). They have a crab deck across the street from the restaurant proper, and while it's no ritzy joint, IMHO it's probably the most affordable and consistent crabhouse in the city proper. If you're bound and determined to eat crabcakes, check out Faidley's in Lexington Market--they serve up some whoppers.

Beyond that . . .

- Peter's Inn (Fells Point; maybe my favorite local restaurant, featuring the garlic-iest garlic bread in Christendom)
- the Helmand (Mt. Vernon; great Afghan food in a slightly swellegant setting, served up by the brother of Hamid Karzai)

There are lots of other great places to grub, but those are the must-hit highlights in my book.

Live music/dancing:

- the Ottobar (N. Howard St., the ne plus ultra local rock, etc. club)
- the Talking Head (downtown, in a glorified alley; the Ottobar's little brother)
- Fletcher's (Fells Point; not a place to just drop by, by any means, but depending on who's playing . . .)
- Sonar (downtown; not the biggest or fanciest dance club, but arguably the best)

Bars:

- Club Charles (N. Charles St., just above the train station; generations of Baltimore hipsters call it home--in fact, the whole block is pretty hopping on weekends)
- the Brewer's Art (Mt. Vernon; serious beer, serious hangout, the food's pretty good too)
- Mt. Royal Tavern (near Maryland Institute College of Art; generations of Baltimore art students call it home)

That oughta get you started. And be sure to check out City Paper (ahem) to find out what else is happening when you're gonna be here.

Lee G (Lee G), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

are any of these things near Camden Yards?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd assume so unless Camden Yards is in the middle of nowhere.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

According to CitySearch, this is the closest bar to Camden Yards. However I really doubt there's a problem getting to other places, Chris!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

right.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

We will protect you and find you, ok?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Protect me please, im not one for roaming strange cities. Get a couple beers in me though and I'll streak down main street in Baghdad.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Max's on Broadway upstairs dammit! It is THE JOINT. Unless we all want to hit the Ottobar. But they throw you out early and it's not exactly close to anywhere else.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Lee; will you be joining us? Ally, we are going to a beach this Sat. We will escape the crowds and indie rock by going to the aquarium and the beach. And there's no need to go to Orchard Beach alone; Marybeachgirl don'tletitpassyouby Summer is always up for a beach trip. And there's rumblings of Long Beach so don't panic.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

But we should still go to beaches in Maryland! We really should escape indie rock though, I'm up for the aquarium.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

whats the jukebox like at Max's? Bobby Brown?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Camden Yards is right downtown, so it's a short walk from there to anything with a "downtown" next to it on my list and a long-ish walk to Fells Point or Mt. Vernon (and the Visionary Museum, which is on the other side of the Inner Harbor). Canton is further east along the waterfront, beyond FP; the stuff labeled "midtown" or "near JHU" is to the north of Mt. Vernon.

I'll be on vacation with the fam then, but have fun.

Lee G (Lee G), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

its approx a 1 mile walk to Max's from Camden. A 4 minute cab ride. Yay, I can already taste the crab on its way up.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh gross, dude. TMI.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool, this Siren Fest is gonna be all about the aquarium and the beach and the food and escaping the music.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

And if you're going to the aquarium, go early and buy tickets for later. If you just show up at around, say, 1 on a weekend afternoon expecting to get right in, they'll probably issue you a ticket for 3:30, so plan accordingly.

Oh, and Inner Harbor, Fells Point, and Canton are to the east of Camden Yards; downtown, Mt. Vernon, and just about everything else on my list are due north. Federal Hill/South Baltimore are to the south (duh); plenty of bars and restaurants down that way. You probably don't wanna be wandering around too far to the west of the stadium. Head up the wrong street and you'll be living The Wire for real.

Lee G (Lee G), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Mary, that's what all our get togethers are about. We plan to go one place then spend the rest of the day trying to escape our plan (see: Siberia, Red Hook, Siren Fest).

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The aquarium is mad expensive, though. Last time I tried to go with my gf, it was like $17.50 a ticket with a four hour wait, so we just said fuck it.

I say we all do some crazy shit in Hamden, hon.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ally and I are actually talking about going to the NY Aquarium in Coney Island.) I went to the Baltimore one on a girl scout trip once.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

so is this bitch still on? i booked my hotel today. i will be approx two streets from camden.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, it is still on of course.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I am trying to figure out what to do re xportation issues. My friends and I will be driving up, probably in multiple vehicles.

I have a work release at 1100 on the 1st, BTW, so if anybody wants to get together for a late lunch or early dinner I'm down like a c-c-c-c-cuuuhh? I'm down like a c-c-c-c-c c c-c-c-cluuuuuh? I'm down like a clown named brown.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary and I are not going to work on the 1st so we can theoretically be in for early dinner provided we actually get to bus on time (not a given)

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hey I might be able to go to this

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

See this people? You see this? This is you being REALLY JEALOUS again while we have a shitload of fun.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I'm scheduled to work until 6 pm on August 1 and 2, so I should be able to drive to Charm City and meet up with you around 8 pm or so one or both nights.

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Im done for meeting before the game in the afternoon on Sat and if your up for a double dose of me, I'd like to meet afterwards too.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to be in DC that wkend, so I'm planning on doing this. transport? lodging?

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount is coming!!!?? Holy shit. I'd like to see him call me Mariah to my face boyyy.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(I can only do the 1st btw)

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary and I will be arriving on the 1st, this is splendid.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Can I get a clear schedule of events? Pardon my retardedism.

Girolamo Savonarola, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, you guys, I'll be at the Ottobar selling merch on August 4th...

hstencil, Wednesday, 23 July 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm afraid August 4 is nowhere near a weekend, stence, so I shall not see you. Everyone else should go see him though, and his hair.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be back at work on 8-4. damn. unless i eat one too many crabs.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Aptly timed Onion story makes my day slightly more tolerable!

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so Girolamo is getting testy.

Friday = Max's on Broadway around 9?
Saturday = ????

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 26 July 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My cousin own's a coffee shop in Baltimore. The entire frontage of said store is taken up with a colorized photo of my aunt, wearing curlers.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Saturday, 26 July 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No, dude - seriously, it's cool. It's just that this thread was getting seriously vague and off-topic as the FAP itself. I just wanted details - don't feel the need to accelerate this because I was ribbing you about it before.

That all being said, Friday sounds fine to me, assuming I don't have a late-night preproduction meeting.

Girolamo Savonarola, Sunday, 27 July 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey dude. Trust me. I know what I'm doing etc.

you can send me an email at tmillar at see oh dee ee tee ay en kay dot org w/ cell number and all.

g-cannon - sorry I didn't call you tonight. Things were relatively hectic. I'll call back tomorrow.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 27 July 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I may not be coming once again! My wifes car shit the bed and needs about $500 worth of repairs. My mortgage is due, my credit card is maxed out and I have no $$. Fucking A wonderful.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 28 July 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

My wifes car shit the bed

Oh the imagery.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 July 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, now I have no idea if I'm going to be working at all this week after Tuesday, so I'm reserving Friday and Saturday evenings for Baltimore. Millar, any chance I can get a ride with you if I meet you out at Greenbelt once again?

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 28 July 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Note: going to a beach is not in the cards anymore. Not that anyone was actually thinking of taking me to a beach but if they were, I refuse to go because apparently the sun hates me.

Is Blount coming or not? I say we do the 1st since like I notice three people saying the 1st is better for them.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

j.lu, G-Cannon:

Picking up folks at Greenbelt is going to be troublesome but if that's what needs to be done I can do it. The reason it's troublesome is because then I would have to drive you back right at last call to make sure you can make the last train of the evening home.

according to WMATA and the MTA you can also ride the MARC up to Camden from Greenbelt. But the MARC only runs until midnight on Fridays which sucks ass.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well now all of a sudden I'm working 2-10 on Friday, so if the FAP is on 8/1 I probably won't be able to make it. But thanks for responding.

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Why on earth do you have to do those hours??

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 28 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

getting out of baltimore is the tricky bit for me. putting off getting an amtrak back to d.c. until saturday morning would be ideal. is there anyone is baltimore who can put up a polite midwestern boy? or should I look into hostels etc?

geoff cannon in d.c., Tuesday, 29 July 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I won't be off work until 9 PM, but otherwise count me in for Friday.

Girolamo Savonarola, Tuesday, 29 July 2003 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Dada, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I just met a guy from UMass who used to write crime beat for the Washington Times. He has all sorts of awesome stories. I told him to show up at Max's at 9 or so on Friday. This FAP is going to be awesome.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

What about dinner at John Stevens?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

In 1996, I went to work for a tiny company named after the town of Baltimore, in Co. Cork. We did well and then we did more well, but we didn't really know we were doing great until the boss came into the office and announced that we'd just bought baltimore.com. From the City.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

UMass?!?!?! WTF you are inviting my assassins to the FAP, I am no longer coming.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone?

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

You could take my place at Millar's house, since I'm now boycotting this TRAP FAP.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not coming either, I'm emo

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This is EXACTLY like that July 4 FAP, jesus.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

except no Andrew Farrell! Boo.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

We'll have to call him then.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Roll call. Who's planning on showing up? I'm debating taking the Chinatown bus (Drop me off in Baltimore, please.)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 31 July 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

You all gonna call me I hope?

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 31 July 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

er, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be there

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 31 July 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

80% chance I'll partake.

Girolamo Savonarola, Thursday, 31 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I already bought my train ticket so I kind of have to go. Or I could be totally ostentatious and refuse now.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 July 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"ostentatious"

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 31 July 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

"jackass"

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 31 July 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 31 July 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Looks like I'm gonna have to sit this FAP out:( Have fun, B-more though....

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 31 July 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, my friends are really gonna wonder why I made them drive all the way to Fells Point just to drink with one girl from New York...

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 31 July 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a lurker... can i just watch from the table next to you, is that alright?

schmanktenputchka, Friday, 1 August 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Not when I show up topless!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I might be at this thing

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i won't look with my good eye, i promise.

schmanktenputchka, Friday, 1 August 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd give it a little better than fifty fifty for me. There's that outsider art museum I want to check out as well in the afternoon (+), and a crab cake to eat (+), but I'd have to find and then shell out for a hotel (-). Plus I don't really feel done with DC yet. I'll try to let you know, either here on email or by fone.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not just one girl ... it's Ally!

Tad (llamasfur), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

missing Blount = not cool

(when in DC, must to eat crabcakes at weekday lunchtime at c.f. folks, 19th street b/w M and N)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(well, actually, they're not super-special as crabcakes, but c.f. folks is very cool. those at Johnny's Half Shell, P b/w 20 and 21, are probably excellent.)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 1 August 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll bring brownies...? hello?

schmanktenputchka (schmanktenputchka), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm down with brownies.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm too drunk to read the whole thread. where is this thing? will you all be freaked out if i show up with my boyfriend? we've been reading this website for a very long time but never posted. it's unfortunate. do any of you really have any interest in meeting random lurkers? i don't know, but if you do, say so and we'll be there. we like to drink and my boyfriend is quitting smoking and would love an excuse to smoke a ton one last time.

schmanktenputchka (schmanktenputchka), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

well alright i gave it a chance. goodbye folks, and goodnite!

schmanktenputchka (schmanktenputchka), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well you need to wait a bit longer. It's at Max's. Come if you want, that'll be cool and also more smokers.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 1 August 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Good, I'm glad we scared up some more peepz. Max's on Broadway, Fells Point, nine o' clock sharp. Helltime Producto, sir lewke, and the rest of the air force give or take a few. Plus me. You don't want to miss me do you?

Fuckin' Blount if you don't show now I'll kick your ass.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 1 August 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone plz send cell #s to Ally or to my SECRET CODETANK email address listed above so we can not fuck this up. Thank you goodnight.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 1 August 2003 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

IT'S ON.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, we're taking off. We'll be UPSTAIRS, unless we're downstairs.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 1 August 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

HOLY SHIT how are we still alive? details tomorrow!! Girolamo is sworn to secrecy!!

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 2 August 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

P.S. SUCKAS!!!!

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 2 August 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I AM NEVER GETTING DRUNK AGAIN.

That being said, the FAP was awesome! I rate it 11/10.

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 August 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, where are the pics?

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 August 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Details!

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 2 August 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

8:32pm Ally, Luke & I took off to grab some Wendy's for dinner and pick up Helltime Producto.

Arrived at Max's, went upstairs, met Girolamo. Sat down. Started easy with Newcastle, Sierra Nevada, etc.

Friends arrived. Matt, Nikki, Anthony, Nick. Chainsmoking begins in earnest.

At some point I bought a Chimay for myself and shortly thereafter everybody started getting them. Max's has Chimay on draft and serves it in big glass goblets. If you've ever had Chimay you can probably imagine what the evening turned into. The pictures are fucking astounding. Serious camera abuse going on last night.

After 2:00am bar close we wandered back to the car and started riding home. Luke bounced over a 6" median because he was looking for a street sign and didn't expect it. WHAM. Blew left front tire completely flat. Luke bought the car used and it turns out he has no tire iron. Helltime, Luke and I stand outside the car trying to get help. Ally passes out in backseat. A giant blue truck driven by two heaven-sent Texan mechanics pulls into the parking lot where we stopped. They get out, open the tool case, grab two Budweisers and get to work, pro bono. God has special plans for my friends and I, I kid you not.

After an hour of grunting and cranking we finally get the spare attached, the two Texans disappear into the ether from whence they came, and we are back on the road. We get home and pass the fuck out.

The rest of the story is in the pictures. Should be up soon enough.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 2 August 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

No Colin Meeder?

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 2 August 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Chimay!

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 August 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck - it killed my fake HTML tags!

Girolamo Savonarola, Saturday, 2 August 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it is unacceptable that this occured without my presence:(

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 2 August 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth -no sweat. Next time you come over we're going to play "Forty Hands." You get two 40s of malt liquor and tape them to your hands. You only get to take them off when you're finished. It's going to be awesome.

Millar (Millar), Sunday, 3 August 2003 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Q: what if you have to pee?
A: well, that's why you try to favour one of your hands over the other.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 3 August 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Boy, I fucking lamed out on this one.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 3 August 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary's response is brilliant. I sustained head trauma during our car accident and also threw up while they were jacking the car but apparently no one noticed me do that.

I am never touching that Chimay shit again, it's laced with something.

Also, FYI to everyone, Metropark NJ doesn't really exist. It is a life-sucking vortex which forces you to sit around for about 2 hours after you leave it, refusing to let you pass from NJ into NYC. Four times this has happened to me!! Fuck that amtrak bullshit, I'm taking a bus from now on.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 4 August 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

metropark does indeed suck (it's in iselin/edison, which is hand's down the worst part of NJ). but how on earth did you get stuck there? i mean, if you took amtrak then you should've been able to go straight on to NY Penn Station?!?

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 4 August 2003 05:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I was in New York, actually. :(

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 4 August 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Tad, the Amtrak stops in Metropark, then Newark! What are you talking about, going straight to Penn Station? Do you own a teleporter?

I just saw the pix and I don't even know wtf is going on with them. They are amazing and I don't remember a single one of them. Goddamn Chimay.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 4 August 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It goes through Metropark, but it doesn't usually have problems continuing on its merry way to Penn Station. What happened Ally? Welcome back!

Mary (Mary), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It just sat there for ages and ages, after pulling out. It does this to me every time I go to D.C. One time my D.C. return took 7 hours because of this weird random breakdown right after we left--wait for it--Metropark. I'm convinced it's not a real place, but rather the black hole.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

QAing a proposal for the federal government or Chimay and a car accident? Now I know where I would prefer to have been this past Friday night.

(Sadly, no one will pay me to go to Baltimore and drink beer.)

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 4 August 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

(beer. tom's friends who poss don't wanna be googled. girolamo and tom. helltime producto and girolamo. tom and ally. growling helltime, what's up with that face it's brilliant. tom. paparazzi.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was torn between putting that on my desk or the one of us with tongues hanging out cross eyed. Cross eyed won out.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

im so glad i never made it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

We aren't that ugly, Chris!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

there would have been pictured of me shirtless. i would have missed you all anyways, seeing as i would have been there on saturday.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Well we could've hung out on a Saturday. You really should be a bit less fatalistic, you know.

And you wouldn't have been the only one pictured shirtless/partially shirtless. There were at least 4 people who would've kept you company.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

fatalistic?

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha read this thread and the NYC thread! Anyway why didn't you email me yr phone #?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot. Yep, im a miserable bastard. Grrr, I HATE YOU ALL! Haha.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

bahahaha. What happened to the other shots?

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude for serious, no one wants to see all of them.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW my favorite picture is the beer with the fork in it because wtf did we have that fork for? There was no food being had. Did someone bring it with them? It's amazing.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the damn perspective on that photo makes my arm look about 2" thick. WTF.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yeah, your arm has learned my perspective trick. It's a cute photo tho!

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 28 June 2004 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
I forgot to read this thread before going, so ended up at the mercy of intuition and an 1997 Lonely Planet guide to the Capitol Region. Spent some time in Annopolis, ate at the Ruth and Chick's or whatever diner, visited St. John's, visited Naval Acadamy..... arrived in B'more, went immediately to the top of WTC building (not my idea!), traveled to hulking dock & neglected waterfront site, traveled through extremely segregated neighborhoods of picturesque and partially boarded-up rowhouses, noted the local summertime uniform of the B'morean, X-large white T-shirt with shorts, went to Fell's Point for dinner--ended up at Captain John's Restaurant, or Admiral Fell's Restaurant, or something, ate outside on the street across from a motorcycle gang revving their engines. Touristy toursity, Drinks at the Wharf Rat. Shopped at that CD place and a cute whimsical place. Recommended cheap hotel on a strip club strip outside of town no vacanices, so ended up at another 1970s style cheap hotel on the outskirts of another part of town. Next day breakfast at Sip N Bite -- yummy -- went to Normal Bookstore and Book Thing but didn't have any books to trade in, went to the Walters Museum, not as impressed as expected, went to Hampden--which seems to be a parody of itself?--all pink flamingo-festooned/marketing, went to Atomic Books and other stores along 36th street. Went to the Visonary Museum, which blew me away. Saw small-scale replica of Coney Island beach and attractions!!! And numerous mermaids in their H20 exhibit. Didn't know where to go so back to Fell's Point for Nacho Mama's and Natty Bos. Also saw a window screen exhibit at the AMVA so was pleased to see a lone working windowscreen with lighthouse very charltonlidoesque in Canton.

Question: What is the deal with the signs saying BELIEVE everywhere? And the parody signs ? What does it mean?

Was unfortunately not as impressed with B'more as had hoped, as for years had considered moving there. Thought there would be a more happy medium between the touristy shiny new horrible waterfront part of the city and the broken down derelict architecturally romantic part of the city. But the middle ground seemed to be lacking? Of course in just a few days couldn't see everything, but didn't find a real cheap vegetarian restaurant used book store vibe that I was looking for. Will follow thread suggestions more diliigently upon next visit.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 20 June 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

went to the Walters Museum, not as impressed as expected

what were you expecting, may i ask? i sorta work behind the scenes there and i think the medieval and asian art collections are pretty badass (for a second-tier working-class-schlub city)

BELIEVE is baltimore's or rather the mayor's anti-drug campaign, which seems to consist of not much more than those signs actually. the parodies are... just that.

went to Hampden--which seems to be a parody of itself?--all pink flamingo-festooned/marketing

eh? i lived there for a year and never once saw a pink flamingo. i did see lots of ugly pig-ignorant people on a regular basis however.

Am0n, Monday, 20 June 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

True Vine = yes!

As for Hampden, you may have been awash in post-Honfest decoration.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 12:55 (twenty years ago)

how does the honfest differ from the hampdenfest (aka parade of the uglies)? i've been to the latter and saw that band battles play. i also witnessed some 60 yr old hampden locals, both dressed like teenagers, scream at each other drunkenly in the middle of the street.

the lack of used bookstores is distressing at times, as there used to be plenty of them and most of them closed shop. this one that i worked at when in school is still open though and is probably still really good, haven't been there in years. it's two connected rowhouses full of books, lot's of different rooms and floors to go through. also, you missed out on the baltimore book thing which is a nonprofit free book place. they get tons of donations and everything is given away free. they recently were forced out of their location due to high rent but were able to find another place over near normals books. it's open on saturdays and sundays.

Thought there would be a more happy medium between the touristy shiny new horrible waterfront part of the city and the broken down derelict architecturally romantic part of the city.

that would probably be federal hill, canton, highlandtown. charles village is nice to walk around and the baltimore museum of art is there (but i find it a bit underwhelming)

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

I went to Book Thing. It was right around the corner from Normal's. I also went to Federal Hill and Canton--they seemed to upscale. I'm not sure I went to Highlandtown. The places that were upscale seemed quite upscale, and the places that were downscale seemed quite downscale.

Hamden: There was a bar called Hon, affixed by a 20 ft pink flamingo, and there was also a gift shop, which sold hand towels, T-shirts, etc, with pink flamingos and/or the word "hon" on them. The area where Normal's and Book Thing were seemed okay--is that area called anything?

Re the Walters, I went to see the Asian art collection, which I had heard was really great. I thought the museum was a bit fusty, especially the Hackerman house which I had to go to see the Asian stuff. I think it was renewed recently? I guess I expected it to have more a modern feel.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

The area where Normal's and Book Thing were seemed okay--is that area called anything?

Waverly

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 21 June 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

we went to highlandtown mary, it was early on when we headed out towards the cranes (on the way back from the cranes, when the freeway kept wanting us to go on it)
