Is Friendster terrifying?

I know there were other Friendster topics, but I triied to pull one up and my browser crashed.

Anyway, I signed up a few months ago as Jack Ass, but didn't even spend any time on it. I just signed up to see what it looked like.

Now, that I keep getting invited, I finally joined and, by knowing one person, I had 3,600+ friends in my network. I haven't added any additional friends yet. It's kind of weird.

4 ex-girlfriends I had considered way the hell out of my life, I see are connected to me through only 2 or 3 friends! That's pretty weird. But, I guess I don't keep in touch with anyone and most people do. I saw all these faces from college and high school and just the idea that all these people are still in touch gives me the grossy-gross shivers.

Joining Friendster when you are indeed a hermit is a bit ironic, I guess.

Or not. I mean, it's safe to say I have way more Friendster friends than I do flesh and blood friends. Yay hermits!

grossy-gross shivers

otherwise known as "the creeps."

Scaredy cat (Natola), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm seeing a lot of people that are sort of like parading their alcoholism, freakiness and kinkyness in their personal profiles and I'm thinking, "Jeez, don't you give a shit what your coworkers, relatives and just random strangers think of you?"

I can see how it's, you know, "cool" to talk about what a drunk you are amongst a certain group of friends or whatever, but I would never want a coworker, boss or otherwise superior to accidentally find me on Friendster and see that my interests are "Drinking, drinking and drinking" and that my preferred music is "Rock N' Fuckin' Roll!!!!" or that I'm looking to meet people for "casual sex at their place during lunch hour or after work."

You can always just act like, "Ha, what a joke that was," but I still think it would leave a bad aftertaste.

Scaredy cat (Natola), Sunday, 3 August 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

...and the random stalkers. Let's not forget about them.

Did anyone notice Foester is registered?

oh! so now, no one likes their stalkers anymore.

man, talk about a pro-bono habit that's gone to waste on some people.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 4 August 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey wow, I never thought of it that way! Obviously I oughtta just feel flattered and shut the fuck up. Thanks for the tip.

Or not. I mean, it's safe to say I have way more Friendster friends than I do flesh and blood friends. Yay hermits!

I have more fictional, non-human, or celebrity friendsters than I do flesh and blood friends. Yay hallucinating hermits!

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Monday, 4 August 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i like how individual drugs/boozes have their own entries, and how they're always "friends" of the celebrities they're affliated with.

Fr'nstance, find the profiles of certain Happy Mondays, and dig their Friends lists...

no, that's not funny.

of course friendster is terrifying.

the whole thing is a project of john ashcroft's to find out who knows who. that way, when one person is arrested for subversive activity, everyone will be.

j fail (cenotaph), Friday, 8 August 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

minna i see no problem there...

The presence of the winky faces suggests that Ned is a strong influence on the Scandanavian expat perv community.

Yesterday there was a Friendster invite in my inbox from my best friend in high school. I haven't talked to him in well over ten years, but for the most part that was a conscious decision. Clicking on the link brings you to a Friendster page that warns--in bold red type--not to accept unless the person really is your friend. I actually thought it over for a full day before I decided what the hell.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 8 August 2003 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
As you may know, Friendster gives the option to 'bookmark' profiles you like. You also have the option to allow another person to see that you've bookmarked their profile.

There are three people whose bookmarks I can see. One is an ILXor. I'm perfectly fine and unweirded out by it because I like him. The second one is a gay guy from CT who's kinda cute in a goofy way. Unfortunately, he lives in Connecticut and I am a lazy ass; ergo, I won't even bother. But again, I'm not creeped out about it.

The third has as his primary picture of what look like a man's gentials after being surgically removed from the body. He describes himself as a body-modification activist and surgeon.

Actually, this isn't creepy either, insofar as I don't think this guy is gunning for my balls and is probably not a horrible human being at all, it's just the picture and the idea is so ooky that it makes me not want to look at my bookmarks ever again.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Saturday, 27 September 2003 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i was in the public library computer lab today, and a very fat grey-yet-balding 50ish man with the sort of chilling blank stare and drooping lower lip that make someone seem to be perptually slobbering in awe was using the computer next to mine. naturally he first checked out 'friendster profiles', and i peered over his shoulder, interested to see the first actual usage of this supposedly-popular trend ive seen outside of ilx. this left him visibly unsatisfied though, and he quickly moved on to a 'live teen chat'. this gave him more luck and immediately he had three or four private windows open, talking to girls with improbable names like 'tooblonde274' and 'kitten4u'. despite his sluggish two fingered typing he was able to carry on a semblance of conversation with all these names at the same time, just really simplistic flirting and 'this is the thread where i say'-type details abt each others lives. his chat name was 'radioray'.

after ten minutes or so of this, one of the girls said she had to leave to go to cheerleading practice. he was obviously intrigued and said 'i wish i cd go see u cheer'. 'i bet u do!' she said. he solemnly typed '*lol*', almost flaunting to me that he was clearly not aughing out loud. this carried on for a few minutes, lots of '2's and 'u's etc, at one point he, in internet chat 'action' speak, leaned over and pinned a rose to her dress, while kissing her. her well-received reply was a simple *blush*. at this point, he realized he had been spending too much time with his one special lady, advancing the intimacy to the flower-pinning chat-action level and all, and frantically tried to keep up with the rest of his harem, 'yah homework sux :-)', 'that sux u shld stop being freinds with her!', etc etc etc. finally, cheerleading rose-pinned girl had to go actually cheer, and he gave an identical signoff message to all his girls, 'i got 2 go now, email me ok? :-)' and closed the chat program.

at this point i breathed a mental sigh of relief. thank god this creep, this monster, is done with his disgusting 'rounds'! he rummaged around in his filthy backpack, which i took as a sign of preparation to leave, but he only pulled out a smudged spiral notebook. after flipping through a couple indecipherable pages (one seemed to have car repair bill additions on it, a terrifying reminder of his adulthood after all the forced teenager masquerading that was the only thing id seen from him, he found a page of six or seven scrawled email addresses, in the same cutesy template of his previous chat partners, 'bamagrrl27', 'hotstuf27', various cat- or flower-related ones, etc. he then opened his hotmail account (his email address was earl-something, contradicting his previous 'ray') and began to email all of them flirty pleasantries, more drawn out but nearly identical to what he had just exchanged with all the chat girls. one of them apparently was going to be staying in georgia this weekend. he offered to let her sleep at his house, and told her to call him as soon as she could, have a great weekend, etc. (by now he was clearly so obvlivious to my presence that i took it as a opportunity to write down his phone number, if you want to call him its 706 548 5097). advancing his already likely-prosecutable 'seduction' into real world sleepovers was too much for me, and at this point i got up, leaving my not-yet-checked out books at my seat to show i was returning, and walked across the room to whisper this creep's intentions to the computer lab librarian. he was bothered with some computer problem of his own, and sympathetically told me that he would check it out in a minute. i went back to my seat secure that my neighbour was going to get all that was coming to him, ejection from library premises, banishment, imprisonment, castration.

when i returned to my chair he had apparently finished the day's emailing , and replaced the notebook in his grimy jansport. he then typed a full web address into the microsoft search engine (a common practice at libraries, but understandably more disgusting to me in this instance), a lengthy subdomain, something ending with 'freeadult.com'. i quietly groaned in disapproval. the website quickly loaded and at first there was nothing visibly pornographic, a red background, black text of links to questionable words like 'CRUSH' and 'HEELS'. he clicked on heels, and a jpg of a womans thin leg appeared, her foot in a black high heel. excitedly, he pushed his chair back in what i can only assume was sheer joy, clicking the image to make it appear larger. there were many more pictures of 'heels' there, and he treated himself to each one: a click, an excited scoot, a twenty second stare, and onto the next. by now i was totally unable to pay attention to my own screen, glancing over at his and then back to the busy librarian as if to say, dont you see, i was right to tell you, why are you putting me through this? i felt the shamefully righteous pang of censorship i had gotten once before, when i threw a new hardcover book i had just found (asmarmy black panther 'expose' written by a white neo-conservative) into a restaurant dumpster.

after his appetite for 'heels' was sated he closed the multiple still-open picture windows, and i allowed myself another relieved sigh, ah, finally, thank god. but of course, he wasnt done yet, and almost proudly reopened the search window to type in another full web address. the actual text of it was jumbled and i couldnt make out what it could possibly be, but i hoped and feared the worst, hoping it would be horrible enough to get him expelled forever, fearing i might vomit if i saw another 'u can come stay at my place :-)'. the site he loaded, this time, was 'giantess videos', cheap-looking movies of tiny, ugly men, obviously acting against a bluescreen, and giant, giant women. the men looked up at the women from their huge countertop, they stood on their clothed breasts, they kissed their humungous lips, and, astonishingly, none of it was pornographic. he watched mpg after mpg of this stuff, now entirely unable to contain his sick glee, whether from getting away with this in the public library or just simply just having such an unbelievable perversion to begin with. i wanted to stand up, to shout to everyone else in the room, to do something. at this point i should say, im as liberal as youll probably find when it comes to fetishes, but my puritanical impulses had already been inflamed earlier, and now he was insulting my 'normal' sexuality in the most flagrant way thinkable. okay, yeah, enticing a minor into his dark bedroom is 'wrong', but even the historical puritans did that. this, however, this was full-on, no quotes, inarguable WRONG. just as i watched this parade of horror continue, his giggly squirms in the square wooden seat, his motivated click at each bizarre link, the library intercom announced they were closing, come check out books now, leave the computer labs, etc etc, and this man, this, this PREDATOR, followed the order dutifully. while all the other patrons continued nervously scrolling their stock market listings or bet.com music profiles, he stood up, a bit wobbly, from lust i presume, and practically dashed out of the room (or, at least the best a fat 50-something man who is desperately concealing an erection can 'dash'). i sat at my computer, silent, stunned that this world can even still contain sexual kinks yet unseen. so yeah, i think friendster is a little creepy.

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 27 September 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What the fuck did that have to do with Friendster?

(nice story btw. public computer lab suX0r)

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Saturday, 27 September 2003 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

damnit trife don't watch me in the library

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Saturday, 27 September 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, youre saying i was the guy, thats clever

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 27 September 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

btw momus i came THIS close to including you in the list on my portnoys complaint thread but ive still never heard your music!!

trife (simon_tr), Saturday, 27 September 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

damn good story.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 27 September 2003 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

wow, that was kind of a cool story! and if you put the number into google you get eldons address too. i dont really know where we stand on public phone numbers being released, but hey, i put an address of someone on this site and no one ever deleted it so...

one thing i dont understand, is friendster creepy because this guy looked at it, or not creepy because the guy didnt look at it.

i think friendster is somewhat creepy, in the anything in which personal information is revealed opens itself up to something like this, and, yeah, moc/l&c (and to an extent friendster) opens itself up to this more than most, with page after page of young girls staring seductively slightly off camera, with profiles that are sexual/unavailable, which seems to be the alt-onlines take on virgin/whore. with the 'you can look all you want pal, but you will never ever be able to touch, but all my friends can', making these sites a theatre, a show, a platform on which to perform as a created self, which naturally will make it appeal to guys like trifes library man

No, really, is it broken?

Nah, just can't get on the site full stop, never mind logging in.

How seriously have you tried the love and money routes?

Tag (Tag), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

it is not yet terrifying enough

mark s (mark s), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

trife's story is awesome!!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 29 September 2003 09:58 (twenty-two years ago)

There was an article about Friendster in the Boston Herald today. They got a bunch of EMO kids in the article talking about it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

There are people I don't know who come up to me "hey, you're on Friendster huh? We should hang out!" and I'm like "who are you?", but people do that cuz of all the bands I've been in too, so I really don't know if it's any creepier than any medium through which you publicize yourself.

Is Friendster a form of self-expression?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah it seems like it, I'm on the verge of having a bunch of people from my area see my profile and frankly I want to leave it as it is (obv, really), I mean it's silly and only appeals to people who know me properly, but I'm leaving it there as the version of me I'm letting them know. I have no real idea why this whole thing is freaking me out.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I also have had strangers come up to me at shows/bars and say, 'hey yr on friendster, right?'

Tag, try using a different browser. For months I couldn't get on the site but when I tried a different site, bingo. don't know why that was.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 29 September 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you Sam, unfortunately I'm only semi-computer literate and have no idea what using a different browser entails. Could you enlighten me?

Tag (Tag), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You know what...that worked.

Tag (Tag), Monday, 29 September 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh good, (actually it is, maybe) local people are adding me/being added. Somewhat more terrifying is my bold and weird decision to try and add someone I had a superbrief thing w/a couple of years ago, a THING that ended w/me disgustingly drunk and never again calling her, convinced out of it by someone who barely knew her. Which might be what she wanted, I have no idea. I don't even know if I really want her to add me, actually. Otherwise it's still fun, it's kinda nice having friends of yrs search you out and add you.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a rather intense "something at first sight" THING, if that's any justification for my intrusive and unpleasant act

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
what happens when someone who contacted you through friendster starts to get all pushy, like, 'i get the feeling you don't really want to hang out? is that true?' or 'why didn't you reply to my last email?'--when we haven't even met or exchanged much in the way of email chatter

what happens then?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

weird. my friend was puzzling a few days ago over why he keeps getting random messages on friendster & myspace from women from the phillipines.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had a few of them on myspace, but there was literally an Avalanche overnight. Maybe there was an article or something.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhere out in the Phillipines, there's headlines saying "SPENCER CHOW MOST ELIGIBLE BACHELOR IN AMERICA"...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

note that Linda's photo is the *only* photo she has up.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yea, I've gotten a bunch of those. Maybe they're looking for a green card?

are there no lows to which Milano will not stoop

ferg (Ferg), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't Milano a Tagalog name?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Klaudia is kinda cute, though.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

7000 miles though. Might be hard to get a coffee together.

I predict an imminent Phillipine Invasion of ILX! - should be interesting.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The funniest thing on Friendster is the phenomenon of shirtless, chesthairless gay men. If I was gay I'd find it hilarious, anyway.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And then you'd laugh your head off while shaving your fluffy fluffy chest hairs off, right? Right?

OH. MY. GOD.

I was reviving this thread to say just this! I keep getting Friendster requests from girls in the Phillipines telling me that i am cute and that they would like to be my friend. What do they want?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 April 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

They think you are badass, you suave man. I got one such request the other day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

They think you are badass, you suave man.

This seems unlikely, but I'm a bit drunk...so I'll buy it,

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 16 April 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

They're just hoping to tag a log with you to the next FAP!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 April 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe you just typed that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(oh yes, I went there)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 April 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Boldly, where no man etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 April 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't gotten a friendster message from a stranger in months and months. Yes, myspace is primarily occupied by naked asian women. That's all I have to say. I'm also on Orkut. Why? Because I have a crappy job. Orkut's forums are actually relatively good. And friendster is one of my prime methods of self-promotion.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 16 April 2004 06:36 (twenty-one years ago)

friendster is so over.

myspace is where it's at and tribe is quickly on the rise. While i like orkut's format it just doesn't have the capacity of users to make it as useful to me.

(NB, i no longer use these services to meet anybody new, just to keep up with exsisting friends and acquaintences.)

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I disagree. Myspace is so trashy and full of weird html nonsense that chokes my browser. I'm not espcecially active on Friendster, but I know it's there and it's a better way for me to keep track of my friends.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the key spencer is sticking with people you know. i like the blog features and more pictures. makes it easier to keep up with acquaintences.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

friendster has been actually a really good group communication tool, although the privacy stuff they put in place really killed the fun. I mean, if you're going to keep your profile private from people you aren't directly connected to, what's the point? all the voyeuristic appeal is gone. friendster does need to build out some forums though, they seem to be lagging on adding useful features and not fixing the shit that keeps breaking.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 16 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

What is Friendster; how does it work?

It doesn't.

I think you're right, Kyle.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

you sign up and create a profile, including things like sex, age, hometown, favourite books and movies and TV shows and the like

you find other profiles, of people you know (usually), and ask them to be your friendsters. if they approve, you can be friendsters. you can now leave messages for individual friendsters or your entire friendster network. you can also leave "funny" "testimonials", for friendsters. there are other features, probably, but I don't know about them or use them

a lot of people you know are on it, PF

RJG (RJG), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

basically, it is to remind you that you have friends or, at least, know some people, when you are using a computer

RJG (RJG), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

But don't we do that on, for instance, ilx?

I was asked to join someone's 'network' (?), but I could not see what the result would be. I still cannot. So, I did not risk it!

Thanks, though, for the words, RJG!!

the pinefox, Friday, 30 September 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

Originally I think the main appeal was finding out that basically the entire world had long been colliding and people in disparate groups of friends knew each other in surprising ways. For instance, I just realized that Carly knows someone who knows a girl I work with -- I've never seen Carly's profile before today but we've been connected for god knows how long by these two intermediate people who have NOTHING to do with ILX or internet pursuits. So there's that.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 September 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

Actually, the real use of Friendster (and to a lesser degree, myspace) is using it as the worldwide phonebook. Nearly everybody has created a profile at some point, so if you meet someone while drunk, you can look them up the next day to rember their name and maybe contact them.

Myspace, although more hip, still doesn't seem as universal. I can look up anyone on Friendsturd still.

PappaWheelie B.C., Friday, 30 September 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

myspace doesn't seem more hip, to me, at all

RJG (RJG), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

Everybody send those "Smiles" today, before the Friendster world gets jaded!

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

Both of them scare me. Being able to connect to everyone I know is one thing, but then being connected to everyone *they* know - that bothers me. I was looking at my siXs0r's MySpace thing and she had all these people in her friends or associates or whatever it's called that I would never care to be connected to again in a million years. But were I to simply connect to her, these people would have access to me.

Perhaps I am more suspicious, perhaps I prefer being cut off from my past, but it just seems a scary and terrifying thing. And not something I would get into.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 30 September 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 30 September 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

luna is very obviously not discerning since she let me add her

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 September 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

Is the new feature down for anyone else?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm so glad I'm on NONE of these sites anymore!

100% Nice (nordicskilla), Friday, 30 September 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

noFUNrdicskilla!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 September 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Not enough gay boys checking me out. Even further from enough of them saying hi.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 30 September 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

And it "classic friendster" fashion, it no longer works for me.

~~~~ DODONGO DISLIKES SMOKE ~~~~ (ex machina), Friday, 30 September 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)
Honestly, what is their f*cking problem??
Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 September 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)
HEY ADAM CAN I MAKE YOU A PROFILE ? :)
Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 30 September 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)
Adam, can I edit your "preferences"???
Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:04 (twenty years ago)
Am I the only one horrified by the new feature?! I had been looking up every girl I ever made out with since high school! And they all know I still think about them all the time, longingly, alone at my computer, weeping softly about what I haven't become!
Stuck to a Seat in the New Beverly (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)
to repeat once more, change your settings! It only came out today! I'm sure most won't have checked in the last what 16 hours??? HURRY!
Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)
Too late, Spencer. I literally panicked and cancelled my account! There were some deeply traumatic names on my list. Anonymity couldn't have hid the truth about my past.... I have a History of Violence....
Stuck to a Seat in the New Beverly (Bent Over at the Arclight), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)
"WHO *ARE* YOU?"
Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)
(who? who? who? who?)
luna (luna.c), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)
it seems friendster is down for 'scheduled maintenance'
luna, i will add you, when it is up again. although i prefer to be addressed as 'bee-yatch'.
Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)
umm, ok. it seems to be back again
Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)
the feature is new but, it def. shows people who've looked at your profile over the past several months (I know because it showed my ex, and she hasn't logged in since August). Whatever, it is now broken, so no need to panic right now.
I don't care if these hottie girls know I'm looking at 'em!
kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)
Haha, I can't believe they messed up so quickly. Today is probably the most traffic they've received in a good long while.
Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 30 September 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)
haha the guy that did my tattoo over a year ago was looking at my profile!
tehresa (tehresa), Saturday, 1 October 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)
I killed my friendster accound a year ago and have been logging in to get my occasional stalking done with my roommate's account. (L, if you're reading this, I didn't read any of your messages. Honest injun.)
I hope, by some strange chain of causality the exes I've checked in on find him through this new feature, fall madly in internet love, then realize my techno-bunburying during some sort of in-person tryst.
scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Saturday, 1 October 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)
actually I don't think it isn't working now, I think it reset the views as of oct. 1st
kyle (akmonday), Saturday, 1 October 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)
Nutty.
I'm in there, use my address, send me friend requests, etc.
Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 October 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)
Originally I think the main appeal was finding out that basically the entire world had long been colliding and people in disparate groups of friends knew each other in surprising ways.
Laurel completely OTM - this is what Friendster's first and last use is for. They may be lagging behind myspace in allowing you to make your homepage look like a neon abortion, but there's no excuse for not having a Friendster account.
Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 1 October 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)
'Excuse'?
the pinefox, Saturday, 1 October 2005 11:00 (twenty years ago)
THIS MEANS YOU.
Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 1 October 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)
Well, for people who are interested in meeting other people, and learning how people they know know other people they know. I didn't intend to lump you into that category PF, sorry if it sounded that way.
Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Saturday, 1 October 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)
Yeah, I was going to say "errrr... that's a bit arrogant!" but the Pinefox and I seem to be, rather terrifyingly, in agreement yet again.
"As Friendster's CEO, I can tell you with absolute conviction that it was never our intent to make the feature non-retroactive...
We discovered this morning that the feature was inadvertently non-retroactive, and therefore we are literally right now rolling back and purging all past views and implementing the functionality from scratch. This process will take several hours but we are committed to correcting this technical oversight... [Quitting Friendster] would then be penalizing us for a glitch that we immediately, within seconds of hearing about the issue, began to address technically and will be fully resolved less than one day after the discovery."
five years pass...
he was obviously intrigued and said 'i wish i cd go see u cheer'. 'i bet u do!' she said. he solemnly typed '*lol*', almost flaunting to me that he was clearly not aughing out loud.
at this point i breathed a mental sigh of relief. thank god this creep, this monster, is done with his disgusting 'rounds'!
he then typed a full web address into the microsoft search engine (a common practice at libraries, but understandably more disgusting to me in this instance),
this man, this, this PREDATOR... stood up, a bit wobbly, from lust i presume, and practically dashed out of the room (or, at least the best a fat 50-something man who is desperately concealing an erection can 'dash')
I suppose the ref to predator was based on the fact that he was clearly perpetrating a fraud in order to acquire something of value to him. But you have to wonder how many times he was chatting with other frauds like himself.
