This is the official thread for the TOM WEDDING/LONDON ILX MEGAFAP OCTOBER 2003 (as well as me visiting Dublin!)

So okay! Tom's getting married, three cheers! I'm coming over for the big party in October, three embarassed wails. I have just e-mailed Alex T for exact date info and had my e-mail denied, so somebody send me his current e-mail so I can bother him for that. Once I've got that, I'll post it here.

Right now, I am operating under the assumption that it will be either Friday October 17 or Saturday October 18 based on what info I have, so my current plan is this:

Fly in on October 11 during the day into Heathrow. Recuperate by way of copious alcohol consumption and take advantage of Martin Skidmore's generosity in providing a place to crash (thanks!).

On Monday October 13, fly to Dublin with whoever else wants to go there as well and bother the good people there.

Sometime over the next couple of days, do a day (maybe? perhaps it'll have to be an overnighter? chime in with yer thoughts) trip from Dublin and act the part of the dumb-ass American tourist pretending to search for roots and all that in the town of Ballyragget in County Kilkenny. See? Right there in the north of the place!

http://www.rootsweb.com/~irlkik/gif/kilkmap2.gif

Currently investigating Irish Rail options but if anyone has any other suggestions let me know.

On Thursday, October 16, fly back to London, hopefully with some combination of the Dublin crew with me for the celebrations.

Friday October 17 onward, celebrate. Loudly.

Sunday October 19 or Monday October 20, stumble on the plane and wake up in LA earlier that day, hopefully.

All corrections, changes and mocking laughter directed at any of the above ideas welcomed. Right now I'm looking at $600 or so roundtrip from LA to Heathrow and back, $140 for Heathrow/Dublin connections, so any suggestions on cheaper fares definitely welcomed.

So post similar travel ideas and plans, notes of related events, talk about the BIG DAY(s) itself or whatever here. Hurrah!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

And to add that for Dublin I plaintively ask if anyone wouldn't mind putting up with me for a couple of days? :-) Carey, Donut Bitch and more can all vouch for me as needed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

we're still going to Wimpy right?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yeah.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

so any suggestions on cheaper fares definitely welcomed.

If you travelled Ryanair see http://www.ryanair.com/) from Stansted (easy train ride from Liverpool Street, see http://www.stanstedexpress.com/) you would pay just under £53 now. If you were prepared to travel either very early in the morning or in the evening you could reduce that fare further still.

Ryanair are a no frills airline with all that involves, but you did say you would like cheaper.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

and easyjet from Luton are good. I got there quicker the other day than it takes me to get to Stansted without using the car.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The big all-welcome party will be on the 17th.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Getting from Heathrow to either Luton or Stansted is no joke, mind, and liable to cost you somewhere between £20 and £40 depending on the price / misery balance you choose.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:25 (twenty-two years ago)

he has got two days to do it though tim...

HURRAH for big party :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Aside from the big party might I suggest a NedFAP on the Thursday evening (16th). Cos there are going to be a lot of people around on the Friday and it would be a shame if I didn't get to chat properly with the Americans who are so kindly coming over!

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but Ned is travelling from Martin's to/from departure point for/arrival from Dublin, so presumably cheaper trip than from LHR?

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Euston to Luton = tenner (5.70 if you have a worldwide travelcard like me)

chris (chris), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Cabbage said "and easyjet from Luton are good", which is true, but not for Ned, as they don't fly to Dublin from there.

Or in fact, from anywhere.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

d'oh, I didn't realise, I thought they did. Sorry.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Euston to Luton? Are you MAD? St Pancras or Kings X Thameslink mebbe, but Euston to Luton does not work.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryanair fly from Luton to Dublin as well, but at a lower frequency & it seems at a higher price for those particular dates, so I stand by my original recommendation!

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, I'd suggest a seperate thread for you visiting Dublin.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

looking forward to seeing you, obv.

there will be FAPs.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you people expect to give useful answers when you actually read the question?

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having a mare of a day, of course it's Kingsx thameslink, my head is scrambled by rodent today.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

send tom and mrs. ewing my kind regards :-)

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen people be surprised by how no-frills Ryanair are: like cancelling the 6.00pm flight from Luton at 6.05, shipping everyone to Stansted for the 10.00pm flight, no restitution.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Some people are so picky.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Also yes I have couch!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't treat Daddino like Dre.

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen people be surprised by how no-frills Ryanair are: like cancelling the 6.00pm flight from Luton at 6.05, shipping everyone to Stansted for the 10.00pm flight, no restitution.

Admittedly it can be a bit of a gamble, but I think with good odds. Its possible to buy Ned's return flight for less than £30: if it runs smoothly, fantastic! & if it doesn't, you shouldn't really complain.

Mooro (Mooro), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the ticket you buy still represents a contract at any price. People have stuck it to Ryanair for compensation and had joy, but the guy who owns it seems to delight in assholism about not giving refunds or making arrangements for travellers who are stranded or delayed.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryanarse also go to Dublin from Gatwick - and there are coach connections between LHR and LGW. However be prepared to fly standing up / in the overhead locker / strapped to the wing whilst fierce women in too much make-up snarl at you (these are the hostesses).

Personally, I'd pay a bit extra and go with BMI or somebody...

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there! Wimpy is U&K. And it has to be a West London Wimpy, nothing else will do.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Good heavens, a lot of info already. ;-) DV, I will start ye separate Dublin thread for you, thus.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And thank ya for the offer, Andrew! These plane stories make me think I should stick with Aer Lingus, clearly an airline designed solely for Mr. Perry's joy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The hostesses are all called Connie, it's true...

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Aer Lingus always makes me think of inappropriate uses of trampolines.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

mmm, Connie Lingus

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Watch out for her brother Enol!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Wimpy FAP!!!

Mandee, Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Aside from the big party might I suggest a NedFAP on the Thursday evening (16th).

Aw, too kind. Well, I figure we can also do things on the weekend of the 11th/12th as needed, but yes, let's call the 16th a FAP for the American attendees and all. Besides the redoubtable Suzy, here's who I know will be there at or around that time:

Tracer Hand
Mandee
Geeta
Jody Beth Rosen
Mike Daddino
yers truly

Anyone else?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i will be in america. maybe

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, well, I might visit london.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

so are you only allowed to come to this FAP if you bring an american?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

this is actually around the same time i wanted to go to the States too but i just don't know if that's gonna happen yet

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

To heck with the States, let's ponder Ireland. THEN you can visit the States.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i must think on this further (*lunges at piggy bank with sledgehammer*)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm bringing CC DeVille.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say that Vic will be in NYC, but that's a week or so later.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Also yes I have couch!

ME ME ME ME ME ME!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah, Mike can visit Dublin too! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

well shit, if RJG is going, maybe I'll come too! who gonna gimme some money though. how much were tickets from nyc/london? would someone want to take a day-trip to colchester to visit the temple to Clau-Clau-Claudius?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dublin in October? Tis a brave idea: the rolling green hills, the talking sheep, the whipping chilly winds.....;> Still, Tom's wedding will be "the place to be seen", if a good section of we ILXors end up going.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, will Mike and I have to fight for the Dublin couch now? COUCH WARS.

Phil should definitely come along. :-) A Colchester trip? We could sacrifice black pullets and summon the Demon Albarn.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah, Mike can visit Dublin too! :-)

Uh, okay, but you'll have to fight for the couch. By which I mean that it would be an honour and a priviledge to host Michael Daddino, but Ned asked first.

(bah xpost)

The talking sheep agree that Nichole should come over.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The talking sheep agree that Nichole should come over.

I would, but that leaves one crowded couch....remind me in a year;>

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i aint going anywhere near dublin after the disasterous spring break trip i took there in 2001. unless the authorities have done something about the roving gangs of 12 year old chain-smoking, ponytail-pulled-thru-baseball-hat-wearing girls in matching adidas tracksuits terrorizing the video arcade Dance-Dance-Revolution machines.

on the other hand, there are a lot of really cute irish boys.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

on the other hand, there are a lot of really cute irish boys.

And Phil thought there wasn't any pluses.....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil, you'll be with friends and the boys will be there for you, so join us.

We will house Mike somehow! :-) I admit I don't want to lose my couch space, I am lazy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

there are tons of clean'ish hostels in the temple bar area that are pretty cheap. like 15 bucks for a dorm bed.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah, Mike can visit Dublin too! :-)

Wait a minute, WAIT A MINUTE...what the fuck am I saying? Somebody stop me before I get too ambitious!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me get bck to my priorities here...who in London can let me crash?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, clarity! But you should come to Dublin too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I have always wanted to, what with my James Joyce fixation, but the NY-London plane fare alone is going to set me way back.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Darn.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched people play DDR for the first time last week Tuesday. OH MY GOD WHERE HAS THIS GAME BEEN ALL MY LIFE??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

DDR?

Larcole (Nicole), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody stop me before I get too ambitious!

But Mike,

1) Nowt wrong with having ambition. A bit of serious time/money budgeting, and it might be possible for a day or two. (After all, in London, you would be just next door....?)

2) When would you have another opportunity to swig the Guinness and partake of Celtic lore? If anyone asks why you are going, spout about the "historical siginificance of the culture".

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

(damn for slow connections)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Dance Dance Revolution (aka How To Make The Young Ones Look Really Really Silly)!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep misreading the thread title as "MEGATRONFAP".

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Bbbbuut - I thought The Young Ones was SUPPOSED to be silly. Was it actually supposed to be a realistic look at the life of youth in the UK? If so, a move may be called for.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned - the best way to get to Kilkenny city is by bus. It shouldn't take more than two hours and it's a beautiful trip - for the second hour when you are out of Dublin traffic. Buses out to Ballyragget may not be too frequent but it's do-able.

Kilkenny's lovely. And the cows sing bluegrass.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, neat.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I might come to Ballyragget too and I bet I could lure Andrew away from Navan for a weekend. I love when people come to visit. Can I practice being an a chick off American BB, y'all?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, Ned has my nice sofabed for the nights of Oct 11, 12 and 16-19. Jody Beth is next in line if she wants a place, and Michael is third and Phil is fourth. It is a double, but uncomfy for two unless they snuggle together. I have no problem sharing my nice double bed with someone if there are shortages, as long as that kind of thing doesn't trouble you, so I can certainly accommodate two people at any one time. Actually, I also have an inflatable mattress, and I expect there is a pump somewhere or I can get one, so that's at least three! It's a fairly large three bedroomed house with central heating - it can be chilly in October, of course. I am booking the fortnight from October 3th to the 20th off work.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I can certainly accommodate two people at any one time

ROWR! (Sorry, reflex.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Better get that looked at (and thanks again to Martin!).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

There's no cure for what Dan has. Hooray, I think it's spreading!)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm a road warrior. i can sleep on the floor.

Asymmetric Cocktails (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It is a double, but uncomfy for two unless they snuggle together.

I'm very much looking forward to 69'ing with Ned.

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

except i just started this corny job and probably can't get time off...

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 06:50 (twenty-two years ago)

phew, i though you said 'carny job' for a moment...

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Whose idea was it to go to Wimpy, and why? It is a very good idea nonetheless. Do they not have Wimpys in the US?

We need to think of more stuff to do to make this even more fun than the 4th July MegaFAP.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I in charge of entertainment for this too or just the wedding. Because I've got skillz.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Please display these skillz of yours as you wish.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This is changing from a MegaFAP to a MegaOrgy.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"So, this is what you call Mr Wimpy?"

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

This is changing from a MegaFAP to a MegaOrgy.

Where you been? Our FAPs always were orgies. Only the locations and players change.

Because I've got skillz.

Now I really wish I could come. If only to see Pete in his silver lame monkey suit, twirling the tunes.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Big Benderburgers and Brown Derbies for all!

we should go bowling also

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

There is bowling in London?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 August 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Sure is, have to kill time doing something in between the snooker and beer-chugging marathons.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 7 August 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I always like going to a Wimpy because I recall a friend of mine, who knows more than almost anyone else in the world about comic books, demonstrating that you can be too immersed in that world. He said to a waitress in a jokey tone "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today," and followed it with a jovially apologetic "You must get that all the time. I bet you're really sick of it." She stared at him, mystified.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 8 August 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

dear lord, what started as a joke looks like it will become a terrifying reality - that is ILXers all going to Wimpy together!

and yo Ned, we got bowl

stevem (blueski), Friday, 8 August 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Beauteous.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 August 2003 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Nude disco bowling is the only way to do it.

Lara (Lara), Saturday, 9 August 2003 12:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Tell me more of this mystic wonder.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 9 August 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

When is Tom E's wedding? Is it secret?

the pinefox, Friday, 15 August 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Completely. (My understanding is that the wedding is mostly for family and v. close friends because the families in question are so huge or something like that.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not really a secret PF - start of November - but like Ned says there are a LOT of relatives coming so this thing is sort of my alternative reception for online mates.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

All the partying of a reception, no actual ceremony = best wedding ever. Although that sorta sounds mean i/r/t the couple in question getting married.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 15 August 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
REVIVE! Because...my tickets are bought! I will indeed be leaving LAX on a direct flight to Heathrow arriving about midday Saturday October 11, departing Heathrow midday Sunday October 19. More details to Martin and others shortly.

Also, H. in Addis has happily confirmed he will be arriving in London on the 17th itself!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 September 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I might be in London on the 18th and/or 19th as we are going to Spain and cheapest flight options are generally out of London (flights not booked yet). I imagine bed-space is at a premium, so shall endeavour to get late-night flights allowing for maximum FAP time. This may not happen, but I would like it to.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 7 September 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Change of plans, if'n you don't know by now... I'm not going. Rah to everyone who is, and I hope you all have a great time.

animal wrangler (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 7 September 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, I'm relly disappointed, Jody! Come some other time, please!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 7 September 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh crumbs. I am now anticipating this with great, er, anticipation after last night (secret to enjoying FAPs - bit of Misty's Big Adventure through the ears beforehand. Works wonders).

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 7 September 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

REVIVE! Because...my tickets are bought!

you must revive the Dublin thread as well! Far more fun in Dublin, hurr hurrr hurrr.

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 8 September 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably more fun in Ballyragget, when he discovers he's the lost heir to the big house, but he has to stay a night there to collect, and it's haunted (being built on an indian graveyard).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 8 September 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm all set to buy airline tickets but I still need to know if someone in London can let me stay at their place for a few days.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 September 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

michael i certainly can put you up (geeta will — i hope — attest to the non-purulent pitness of my flat)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 8 September 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

15th thru 20th OK, mark?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 September 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

no problem

mark s (mark s), Monday, 8 September 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

EHHHXCELLENT!

Oh my God, now I have to worry about wedding gifts!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 September 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought you would have already settled on mst3k dvds.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 8 September 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Sadly, Rhino's MST3K DVDs are Region 1 DVDs, whereas Tom can only play Region 2 and Region 0 DVDs -- assuming of course that he, like most Britons, doesn't have one of those multi-region DVD-player things.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 September 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I could come to this but it's smack bang in the middle of re-starting school. Bah.

David. (Cozen), Monday, 8 September 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

You would only be missing out on leprechaun seduction.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 8 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't, no. Also American visitors NO PRESENTS REQUIRED!!! The fact you're making all this effort to come and see me (or even partly to see me) is marvellous enough as it is! Save your money for the Spanish Bar!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 8 September 2003 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Hope you don't mind my semi-crashing Tom, as I'll be passing thru Ned convinced me that I should come. Look forward to meeting ppl.

Ailsa, where will you be in Spain? I'll be flying down to Seville on either the 21st or 22nd.

H (Heruy), Monday, 8 September 2003 11:36 (twenty-two years ago)

H I don't mind at all - I'll be delighted to meet you!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 8 September 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Mike most of us Britons do have multi region DVD players if we've got DVD players cos they are easily chipped so places like Richer Sounds do it automatically.

If DVD is computer then it should also work. Playstation2 not so sure about.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

You would only be missing out on leprechaun seduction.

It's a curious thing, it is.

I will revive the Dublin thread once I actually get my tickets for that, but related TO that, who all in the UK wants to actually go over with me to Dublin (and who in Dublin is going to London for the big party?)?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hope you don't mind my semi-crashing Tom, as I'll be passing thru Ned

HELLO!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

THE AISLERS SET ARE PLAYING LONDON THE NIGHT BEFORE!!!

Possibly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You say yes, I say no...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Stop.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

If DVD is computer then it should also work. Playstation2 not so sure about.

There's a region decoder called Region X which was being sold with a remote controller for about 40 quid two years ago.

and who in Dublin is going to London for the big party?

mememe! (shocker)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 8 September 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

So can I get a confirmation from the Tomster himself that he's got a multi-region thingummybob before I shell out DVDs of a show he may not even like?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and believe you me, part of the old a.m.a. crew and then some have been gunning for years to make MST3K available to Tom in some way. So it's not really a "wedding present" thing.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just mentalism.

Is it wrong of me to be obsessed with "Quest of the Delta Knights"? I finally got to see it a couple of weeks ago and there is just something so wonderful and horrible about it that I can't stop thinking about it.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom - just wondered how your & Isobel's nerves were holding up? I should imagine I'd be pretty nervous by now! :-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just mentalism.

It's GOOD mentalism.

Is it wrong of me to be obsessed with "Quest of the Delta Knights"?

No, no it is not.

"Such wealth."
"...is NOT in this box!"

May I call your attention to the new DVD set coming out next month? All from the Sci-Fi Channel years -- Overdrawn At the Memory Bank, The Girl in Gold Boots, Hamlet and the godlike, mighty Space Mutiny.

"CRUD BONEMEAL!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Girl in Gold Boots" makes me happy on so many levels.

Is "The Final Sacrifice" available?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"The Final Sacrifice" is really the story of ILX.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know, Michael, one COULD theoretically hop on to a Ryanair jet at Stanstead and end up in Frankfurt for way cheap if one WANTED to.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, do you have a link that lists more information on this? I need to know if "Pumaman" is included.

Larcole (Nicole), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Multi-region: we use the PS2 so probably not.

Nerves: very well thanks on my part. I tend to work better with last minute stuff anyway. As long as we get a couple of the bigger outstanding things sorted this week we'll be fine.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know, Michael, one COULD theoretically hop on to a Ryanair jet at Stanstead and end up in Frankfurt for way cheap if one WANTED to.

Oh, I suppose...but it would complicate things. Not necessarily in a bad way. I'll have to look into it.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 September 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I need to know if "Pumaman" is included.

No Pumaman alas (or The Final Sacrifice, which proves that Canadians are indeed strange creatures). The overall list as to what is available right this second on DVD is here:

http://www.mst3kinfo.com/satnews/dvds/index.html

...while the main MST3K fan site has the details of the upcoming DVD pack. All should make it a habit of checking there weekly, they'll have all the advance word on the upcoming DVDs as they surface plus they're a great central resource for all the other projects the Best Brains vets are doing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(And I see the set comes out in November but! Blood Hook is available now! I did always want to see that given its role in MST prehistory...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"This is the official thread for US posters to ignore Tom's wedding and babble about MST3K (because hey; puppets!)"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 8 September 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

WEDDING THING - if anyone reading has been invited to the Real Actual Wedding and hasn't replied yet, could they RSVP to the address provided - ta!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 8 September 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, the only non-FAP thing I KNOW I want to do is to have the cash, feeling flash, in Leicester Square. Any other suggestions welcome.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 8 September 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I mentioned to Ned about some kind of expedition to southall to get curry.

Ed (dali), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Um... I'm a little late paying rent this month [sorry carey], so it looks like I won't be able to come afterall. Owell, next wedding/megafap.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 8 September 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ailsa, where will you be in Spain? I'll be flying down to Seville on either the 21st or 22nd.

Benalmadena (near Malaga) visiting my parents 18th - 25th, though hoping to get up to Seville at some point. Latest theory sees us flying out of Stansted on Saturday night, so may be around for some London drinking in the afternoon.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I mentioned to Ned about some kind of expedition to southall to get curry.

Urgent, key and then some.

Plz. keep in mind my general schedule as well when it comes to London -- I'll have part of the day that first Saturday, full day Sunday, off to Dublin on Monday and back on Thursday, then full Friday (17th) and Saturday before leaving Sunday. So if various specific fixed things are planned beyond the 17th megabash and Tom's suggested FAP for American visitors on the evening of the 16th, y'all might want to start considering how to pen them in now...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

One thing that was actually suggested was some kind of meal on the 16th since otherwise there would be day after day of non-stop ruin. Mind you that hardly stopped us when Geeta visited.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

We can have a meal, then ruin. (I'm pondering what the hell the 18th will be like -- the day of ruin AFTER the big party.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 September 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i am totally jealous!! there is no way i can make this -- i gotta save up pennies for my next trip to london!!

mike d: mark s has the awesomest house and is the coolest host ever -- you are in for a treat! i miss mark :(

geeta, Tuesday, 9 September 2003 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ticket: purchased. I'll be arriving in London on the 15th, late morning, and leaving early evening on the 20th.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Woohoo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I got my flight checked. For a jumbo jet.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Will there be a megabash FAP on the evening of 17th then? Is that what's planned. If so, I'll be there.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, that's the big celebratory party for Tom's upcoming nuptials. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The 17th will be beyond ruinous Dr C. It will be the black hole that beckons all other ruin unto it.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 9 September 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It will consist of ruin so dense that not even light ale will escape its gravitational pull.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like my kind of night.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 08:09 (twenty-two years ago)

So apart from getting ruined and reliving Saint Etienne songs, what else can a young man do in London?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

A man could lose himself in London.

Lose himself.

LOSE HIMSELF...

IN LLLON-DON!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(Fuck, I don't know what to do in New York City half the time!)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I could always dérive the FUCK out of the place.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah October the seventeenth will be so ruinous that Carsmile Vicky and me will be going to see half man half biscuit instead ;o)

chris (chris), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

So apart from getting ruined and reliving Saint Etienne songs, what else can a young man do in London?

There are other things to do in London?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

THROW STUFF AT DAVID BLAINE!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

eat cheesecake witha blackcurrant jam topping in front of david blaine.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

People should throw stuff at David Blaine anywhere he happens to be.

Nicolars (Nicole), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

OH FUCK, i totally hadn't twigged...

what is the matter with me???????????????

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to see Blaine in a Box after work on Monday. It's rubbish - the box is huge and he can walk around and stand up and he had a bottle of water and a motherfucking BOOK and HE WASN'T LIVING IN HIS OWN PISS AND SHIT OR ANYTHING! And he's not hanging over the river, he's hanging above a bit of grass next to City Hall. He can see everything Ken gets up to.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

But what did you throw at him?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wondering about the piss and shit situation. Has he got a toilet tent in there?

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

He's got nappies for the first few days, and after that he's not producing any waste.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Not counting his career, of course.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

He must surely have to piss at the very least. I can imagine the shit drying up after a few days of no food, but his body's got to excrete waste products somehow.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes otherwise he'd be full of them.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe he's taking sleight of hand into bold new territory

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he's wearing a poopie suit.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"Don't crap in your hand, crap in your pooooooopie suit...you'll feel relief filling your briiiiiefs!"

Tom Servo (Ned), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Radical recycling project

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 10 September 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a goddamned minute here. My Green Guide says pubs in London close at eleven. AT ELEVEN.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THAT SHIT?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Last Orders wasn't just a cute title for a film.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

THROW STUFF AT DAVID BYRNE!

David. (Cozen), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Mike that's why we go to the Spanish bar my good man

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

so what night is curry night? maybe the 11th (Ned's first Saturday)?? if anyone other than the Americans are willing to travel as far as Southall (but they do know where it is on the map yet???) for good curry I will eat my (chap)hat(i)...Brick Lane's annoyingly far for me though, unless I crash somewhere round those parts (possible) - best to keep it central maybe - realistically, i spied a potentially decent restaurant down Southampton Row - but i'm sure enough Londoners here know where to get a good dupiaza, jalfrezi or dhansak in town.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

re-reading the thread, the 16th sounds like a good night for a banquet, but if we go for a ruby then further ruin is guaranteed courtesy of copious glasses of Kingfisher - hurrah!

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan will be glad to hear that one of my waiters took a day trip to London specifically to throw stuff at David Blaine, McDonalds in point of fact, working on the theory that that the gherkins would stick to the window and remind him of the joy of food.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

also, if people are attracted by the idea of a Fancy A Bowl, possible venues can be mulled over here - Namco station near the London Eye may be a good place

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Namco Station has ultraviolet bowling alleys! this means i am going there even if no-one else wants to...

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan will be glad to hear that one of my waiters took a day trip to London specifically to throw stuff at David Blaine, McDonalds in point of fact, working on the theory that that the gherkins would stick to the window and remind him of the joy of food.

That is a lovely story. If only more folks had such an enterprising spirit.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 12 September 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

BRick lane is full of touts and tossers, there is one good restaurant left. You have to get out to whitechapel for good indian food out east. Southall ain't so bad to get and is well worth the trip.

Surely there are a thousand better places to bowlt than Namco Station in County Hall. What about Rowans in Finsbury Park?

Ed (dali), Friday, 12 September 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

For the 17th we're getting a late license so no Spanish influence should be needed.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 06:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel it my duty as best man to warn the groom that the 17th had better not be too ruinous, since he may need his wits about him the next day.

alext (alext), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I will have a number of celebrated wits about me.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You're half-right

alext (alext), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait a goddamned minute here. My Green Guide says pubs in London close at eleven. AT ELEVEN. WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH THAT SHIT?

This is so sweet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:38 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a reason we start the FAPs at 5.30 Mike!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 07:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i forget why exactly the pubs close at 11 tho...oh yes, it's so people can get the tube home in time (sigh...)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely there are a thousand better places to bowlt than Namco Station in County Hall. What about Rowans in Finsbury Park?

that's fine if people are willing to head THAT far out of the centre (i know it's not that far out at all but Namco Station has a special floor so you can bowl in your own shoes, and other characterless delights surely await there) - same with Southall, which i am more than happy to go to seeing as its only 5 miles or so from where i live and i've never actually been for a meal round there but i've heard it is GOOOOOOOD

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

W-w-w-w-wait a minute! Your subway system closes at TWELVE?!?!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

the last tubes pass thru the centre of the city around 12-12.30 yes

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

michael our dentists are only open for three minutes a year!!

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

places only deliver when your at work, and you can choose any of TWO time-slots, morning or afternoon, then thank the lord that they made it at all.

Nicky Campbell (Alan), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

urk, your -> you are / you're

:-p

Alan (Alan), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Is your country run by Mormons?

And anyway, starting FAPs at 5:30 is weird to me because that's too close to the end of work.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

that's the whole point, stagger from office to boozer.

chris (chris), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Is your country run by Mormons?
Didn't you know that?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking Sides - Country run by Mormons vs Country run by Momus

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

When considering the convenience of Southall for a Ned-related event, please remember that he is staying in East Ham, which is rather in the opposite direction. Since this is the most Asian part of London, and indeed Britain, I expect there are good curry houses hereabouts, but I wouldn't know because I have zero tolerance for (possibly an allergy to) spices.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking Sides - Country run by Mormons vs Country run by Momus
Now that is an argument for pressing the red button.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

It must surely be the case that East Ham only recently surpassed Southall itself as most Asian part of Britain. But maybe going for curry in the centre of town is the best bet all things considered?

(excuse my enthusiasm, I haven't actually had a curry for months now so I'm probably more excited by the thought than anyone else, even Ned?)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Taking Sides - Country run by Mormons vs Country run by Momus vs Country run by MOOMINS!!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

moomins all the way! Pink, cute creatures, how could this not be the obvious choice?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

A Moomins wedding cake topper would be a wonderful thing.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw man, that'd be like the best thing evah.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Votes for Moomins, step in time, votes for Moomins, step in time.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:50 (twenty-two years ago)

They're not pink!! The creatures on the TV series must have been Snorks.

(NB I am a Moomins rockist)

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

i led a crusade against the Snorks, annhiliating their civilisation and wiping every trace of their existence off the face of the...sea - they were THAT annoying.

i got no beef with the Moomins

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

http://users.tinyworld.co.uk/moomin_troll/moominfamily.gif
Pastel colours then, I am sure one of them is pink here!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: derailing threads with MST3K vs. derailing threads with Moomins

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The one with the fringe can turn pink when she's embarrassed!

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They are all different colours in the k-rub Japanese animation series.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

With a fringe like that you would imagine she was permenantly pink.

I know at least five central curry houses worth the time of day.

What do Americans do between work and bouze then?

Pete (Pete), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I bet they go home and freshen up - the lightweights

chris (chris), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

So you're saying that current London entertainment consists of Moomin curry served early so everyone can get home.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't freshening up a euphemism for having a piss? Do they not have toilets in American bars? This is one of those washing machine things, isn't?

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

moomins must be non-white bcz they turn "pale with anger"

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

however:

http://www.moominshop.com/bookaboutmoominlarge.jpg

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 September 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

aha here we go:

"Don't you really know what a Snork is?" said Snufkin in amazement. "They must be the same family as you I should think, because they look the same, except that they aren't often white. They can be any colour in the world (like an Easter egg), and they change colour when they get upset."

Moomintroll looked quite angry. "Well!" he said. "I've never heard of that branch of the family. A real Moomintroll is always white. Chnaging colour indeed! What an idea!"

"Well, these Snorks were very much like you anyway," said Snufkin calmly. "One was pale green and the other was mauve. I met them the time I escaped from prison..."

This is from Comet, Moomintroll is being rockist himself here (or worse), hence Snufkin's somewhat sardonic dryness. (Later of course Moomintroll saves the Snork Maiden from a Poisonous Bush and falls in love with her, so all's well that ends well.)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i meant the other Snorks or what it's worth

Curry served by Moomins tho, enduring image

stevem (blueski), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Curry served by Moomins tho, enduring image

I'm definitely coming to that fap!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The poor old Snork gets a bit of a raw deal I think - he is presented as a bit of a geek and vanishes from the books quite early.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Doesn't Moomintroll start asking for further details of the Snork Maiden before he sees her, thus proving that he's up for a bit of the non-white meat himself?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 12 September 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There are some good Indian restaurants in Ealing ;)

I'm convinced that Moominland Midwinter is the pinnacle of the Moomin-saga,

jel -- (jel), Friday, 12 September 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Moomins in white supremacist shocker!!!!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 12 September 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

'But later that night he dreamt about a little Snork Maiden who looked like him, and he had given her a rose to put behind her ear.

'In the morning he sat up muttering "how silly" to himself.'

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 13 September 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

We can always curry at that old standard Lahore just off commercial road, very good, pretty cheap.

Ed (dali), Saturday, 13 September 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Incidentally, both of the CBS and NBC morning news shows covered David Blaine's stunt within minutes of each other today, suggesting that 1) Blaine's PR dept. is on a American media blitz at the moment and 2) they're working the hatred angle big-time.

I'm realizing that maybe maybe maybe Blaine chose London for this little exercise because he knew so many Britons still remember IRA Maze hunger strikes -- I don't think we Americans have anything comparable in recent history -- and hence he'd get a nice visceral reaction.

Oh, and I finally got my tickets in the mail yesterday. Hooray! I was beginning to worry the UPS lost them.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Moominpappa At Sea is currently out of print :(

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(Why isn't there a Blaine thread?)

David. (Cozen), Wednesday, 17 September 2003 11:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Semi-revive and more or less back on topic because...me being me, I am very much interested in seeing The Lord of the Rings exhibit at the Science Museum while I am there. Initial scrounging shows that there's spots on Sun. the 12th and Sat. the 18th, but apparently in limited amounts -- however, on Friday the 17th it's cheaper and also has more availability. If a set time for the start of the Night of Ruin has been established, is anyone up for going earlier that day? Dr. C did also mention he might be going record shopping that day and I wished to consider his expertise on things musical and Jamaican...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The night of ruin won't be kicking off until the Day of Work has been finished i.e. not until about 6ish.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

REVIVE!

So, all you Americans...exactly what do you do, moneywise, when you're in the UK? Can I pretty much expect my bank card to be accepted at any UK ATM? Or do I go the traveller's checks route? (No matter what, obviously I'll have some pocket money when I first arrive.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 28 September 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always had my cards perfectly accepted, both debit and credit. If you've got a card with a big enough bank, you should be fine -- I'd steer clear of traveller's checks, no point in those anymore. Usually I get some cash in Heathrow from an ATM as soon as I'm off the plane.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 September 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I think checks are important.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 28 September 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I used them regularly when I first visited in 1992 but every time since I never noticed the need. I suppose it might come down to what you need the money for.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 September 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

okay but you have to say 'cheques' not 'checks' once you get here ;)

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 September 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I WON'T TAKE YOUR ROYALIST HASH. You forelock-pulling peasant.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 September 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmmmm, royalist hash (Prince Harry to thread!)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Jacobin hash?

Ed (dali), Sunday, 28 September 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

anything as long it's not corned beef hash

i am tempted to start a proper Fancy A Bowl / Fancy A Ruby thread now that the time draws pants-wettingly near

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 September 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the suggestion for FAR:

date: Thursday 16th October (thus the warm-up for Friday's apocalypse)
location: either Southall (only 12-15 minutes from Paddington) or central London
venue: this restaurant in Southall perhaps, or maybe here in town but plenty of others to choose from
time/meeting: meet at pub by Paddington station around 7/8pm and then head to Southall on train? or just meet at central pub (e.g. Glasshouse) if staying central

i like Ed's Southall idea but am not fussed either way. only problem is so far only he and Ed have expressed enthusiasm for this - time to organise

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 September 2003 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

veerswamy is kind of expensive

Ed (dali), Sunday, 28 September 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I reckon trying to get any number of people all the way over to Southall for a curry on a weeknight is a bit of a non-starter, especially for anyone coming from the east.

Veeraswamy, however, is thirty seconds walk from my workplace - if we go there I demand we get drunk and smash the place in afterwards.

sadly true, but there's always the Saturday (18th), heh - where's your sense of adventure?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 28 September 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Southall is not such a big deal to get to.

Ed (dali), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Venue for Friday yet?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Not as far as I know. :(

Tom (Groke), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Somewhere within lurching distance of the Spanish Bar please. Like the Brickies.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The choice of a Friday night makes venue getting slightly more difficult.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 29 September 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps it's a movable feast, hundreds of people stumbling around from pub to pub.

London ILX Wedding Party FAP - Details

Tom (Groke), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

getting cash out - you'll be fine. if it's similar to the reverse situation (ie UK->US) you'll want to get it out in large amounts, as there's probably a minimum fee (for me the other way it was something like 1% with a min of £1.50, so i had to take out like $250 at a time).

one month passes...
BRick lane is full of touts and tossers, there is one good restaurant left.

Where is this one good restaurant Ed? It is urgent and key that I know before this weekend.
