This is the thread where we talk about the 2003 MLB Playoffs

So we got:

Red Sox vs. Athletics
Yankees vs. Twins

Marlins vs. Giants
Cubs vs. Atlanta

Red Sox vs. Giants in the World Series is my prediction with the Sox winning it all of course. But I may have just spoken too soon.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone know how much of the postseason Channel 5 in the UK is covering live? Will it be the usual two games per week in the playoffs plus every game of the World Series?

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 29 September 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe someone can answer zebedee's question here

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

go sox

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a bit pissed off though as the first Sox game starts at 10pm EST. What the hell is this? Best damn pitching matchup of the whole playoffs and we get a friggin late start. Pedro vs. Hudson, come on! Instead MLB decides that Barry Bonds and his giant mishapen head gets the early game. This is bullshit. When Bud Selig gets back from getting his "kids regular" haircut he should be kicked in his ass.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 29 September 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

and in the nuts, too

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I really really really really really want the Twins to upset the Yankees. Nothing would make me happier (except of course the A's sweeping the Sox).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the matter Dan, just step AROUND the vomit on Landsdowne Street.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan must die.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The Red Sox postseason is fucking with my rehearsal commute, ergo it must stop. Also, the Curse MUST LIVE ON because I like watching Bostonians cry.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Then you'll have something to do when you're stuck in traffic! Just check the reflection in your rearview mirror

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like nothing better than the Twins to beat the Yankees, then watch the Sox kick a little Minnesotian ass.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.mndonkeyandmule.com/mdmalogosmall.gif

But they're so cute!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually those asses are ENORMOUS.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand, you are a prince.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like any of these teams! But I quite fancy that Derek Jeter so Yankees.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Cubs over Braves in 6 (the ATL lineup goes ice-fucking cold)
Giants over Marlins 5 (Dontrelle gets rawwwwwked)
A's over Red Sox in 6 (bullpen bullpen bullpen)
Yankees over Twins in 7 (the red-hot Twins give the Yanks the scare of their lives, but they can't quite pull it off)

Giants over Cubs in 6 (Dustygate goes national; Cubs can't hit)
A's over Yanks in 6 (Half the Yanks pitching staff dies pre-series from old age)

Giants over A's in 7 (happily, no earthquakes to report (over than Billy Beane destroying his office. again))

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

GO CUBS! < /kneejerk>

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 29 September 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

You mean Sox over A's in 5. Only a 5 game series for the first round.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, in the bizarro world.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought the opening round was changed to 7 games?!?!? or am i thinking of the nba?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

NBA. Its 5 for MLB.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure the opening round was changed to 7 games in baseball. But I'm not going to look it up or anything.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Monday, 29 September 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

that's beautiful!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 September 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

mark prior injured, done for the year

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!! Ew Kerry!

Those are very funny, though. Blount you had me for a sec.!!!!!

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

opening round is five games, but i think only yanks-twins will go that long.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! I have a birthday in early October too.

Sir Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:36 (twenty-two years ago)

mark prior injured, done for the year

Blount, stop impersonating the Bad Cubs God, please ... if only you'd been behind the Corey Patterson scare ... I still can't believe that they actually won a goddamn doubleheader, let alone the division.

PS The Cubs are so much more wildly unlikely and wildly more talented than in twenty years that my stupid hope is wildly biting my tongue; I'm picking the Braves, but maybe I smell something like magic? And really, if the fucking Cubs could beat the Braves, anything would be possible ...

PPS Go Twins! And Red Sox! And A's, even!

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yankees v. Twins, 0-0 in bottom of the 3rd. Come on twinkies!

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw some Yankees fans on the news this morning and remembered why it's a good idea to root against the Yankees. One of them actually said, "I'm getting tired of them. I mean, they haven't won a championship in two years."

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Try being a Red Sox fan. 85 fuckin years assbags!

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Well that's cos the Red Sox suck, no offense or anything.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate you. ;)

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's have a fancy street battle over this, shall we?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

when the red sox win the world series this year we will all come to NY and take a steaming dump on Yankee Stadium.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha yeah, good luck with that, sucka.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh, anybody but the Yankees PLEEEASE. Even the Braves would be less painful

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

great game so far. cmon guzman!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i wanna see the sox come within inches ending the curse - like they can smell it; and then proceed to lose, like 4 games in a row and blow it.

i'd stil rather it be them than the yanks tho.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

eek! what happened to Santana?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

3-0 Twins!

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Leg cramp".

Holy fuck! I didn't get that score. Blount, where are you picking up the game?

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

YES YES YES YES YANKEES EAT A BAG OF RUNS!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

My God, that's possibly the most unintentionally-foul thing I've ever typed.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm picking it up on ESPN

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Blount what was Coskie doing stealing 3rd? Hit & Run missed single/swing?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No idea what Koskie was doing. Terrible spot to run. Definitely not a hit-and-run. The looks from the Twins dugout suggested it was on his own volition (especially with a lefty at the plate, it was bonheaded).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

YAY BASES LOADED TOP OF THE 8TH ONE OUT PIERZYNSKI 2-1

TWINS OWNNNNNN!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate Pierzynski with a passion unseen since randy adolescents gazed upon Helen of Troy and wanked themselves unconscious.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to go to a meeting and missed the game, but I understand that the Yankees were terrible.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

why you hate aj dan?

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Because with one out and the bases loaded he hit into a double-play. Poxy bastard.

Still, THE TWINS WON TAKE THAT TWO SEASON SWEEP IN DE FACE!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Leeee,

Just got back and good news for you... SRO and View seats were plentiful, so much in fact, that I was the recipient of three gratis around the 2nd/King gate. If you are willing to wait through the start of the game into about the middle of the first, you should be able to get in no problem.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCK YES TWINS!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

also Leee, check the box score at the name of the 1B ump, i thought of you.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

lastly, with all the hype/criticism surrounding jason schmidt and benito santiago's inability to shut down basestealers this year, i found it richly rewarding to have mr. bonds steal the only base of the game, setting up the insurance run in the 8th.

fox made a move to first to pick off bonds but he was long gone.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The Twins make me happy to be a baseball fan.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 30 September 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE-HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

OK, the Cubs clearly just need to let their pitchers play every position.

Cubs 4, Braves 1, top of seventh
Kerry Wood: 7 SO, 1 hit allowed, 2 RBI

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 01:30 (twenty-two years ago)

AND the most astonishly nonchalant twirling behind-the-back play evah!

FINAL: Cubs 4, Brave 2!!!

(I'm enjoying it while I can ...)

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill Miller best ump ever.

Sir Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

trudat!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's jump the gun like the collective quickdraws we are and postulate: Cubs v. Giants = SF in 4 games, meet Oaktown in the finals. Duck and cover.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray Twins - Tracer and I have been weighing up the options here. He says it would be better for the team ego for Red Sox to beat Yankees as opposed to Twins. Feh.

I'm hoping the slightly rum practice of MN fans screaming in the Metrodome to create Painful Noise Levels (last World Series the news programmes actually got out a decibel counter and measured the roar) totally flummoxes the Yankees.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Kirby Pucketts giant ass needs to make an appearance at one of these games. Then he needs to distract the Yankees pitchers by hiding behind home plate and giving little glimpses of his giant ass.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

yankees spankees eat a bag o dicks bernie.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I am sad! :_(

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Leee, I've gotta root for Florida because they'll be easier opponents for the Cubs.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Careful, last time the Fish beat the Giants in a DS, they won the whole bloody thing.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Game 2: NLDS - SFO vs. FLA recap
The Giants exposed every flaw they had... I don't think they could have possibly played worse from the 4th/5th inning on. Homer scorekeeping aside (there were at least 3 errors that scored as hits... including JT "best defensive 1B in baseball" Snow's 2nd in as many days... a grounder through his legs!?!?!?!), the Giants bullpen wears no clothes. Florida scored 8 of their 9 runs in the 5th-8th innings on SF's "well-rested" bullpen. There is a reason why Schmidt pitches 9 innings.

Alou leaving Nathan in after giving up a homerun to Juan Encarnacion, only to give up 3 consecutive singles (all of whom scored) is a move that Giants fans could only remind them of the ghost of manager's past (and thanfkfully now Cubs fans can embrace). Not pinch-hitting for Jose "Ice Cold" Cruz is somewhat forgivable, but then bringing in Neifi Perez to lead off the 9th when you only have 3 outs to give is hardly what I'd call strategic managing. Not pitching Rueter in a stadium where his ERA is one full point lower and because of the dimensions of Pac Bell, the Marlins would have less of a chance of being successful against him.

Less politely, I'd like to nominate Florida Marlins' management Idiots of the Game for bringing in Dontrelle Willis came for relief in the 8th. Yes, he got Barry to pop out; however, he followed by giving up basehits to Alfonzo and Santiago. What a waste of an arm. Willis was scheduled to start game 4 in Florida. Willis' 2 previous starts against the Giants were less than spectacular, both ending in Willis meltdowns, one of which occured in Pac Bell. Why pitch Willis in Pac Bell with the game pretty much wrapped up when you have Urbina and Looper available?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

sweet jesus a fuckin bunt. i need a bed.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 2 October 2003 10:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with you, Chris. Coulda been worse. Couldn't've been much more Red Sox, but it coulda been worse.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 2 October 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i slept for two and a half hours. i may go crash in my car for the day.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 2 October 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck a red sock

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 2 October 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Dear Joe Nathan,
We are not interested in your Jeff Brantley impersonation.

Love,
1993

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 2 October 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

haha

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 October 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

OK Yankees haters, take notice: my boss is going to the game tonight. My boss has never, in his 44-year life, attended a Yankees game in which the Yankees won. NEVER. I'd put my money on Yankees losing due to this. The man is a curse.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 2 October 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

2 run double - 3-0 A's!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

WHy in the heck are they starting Wakefield, and having Lowe come out of my pen? WHatever, it's not my cross to bear. I'm loving every minute of it.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - should be "the pen". I don't have any pen, other than a few ball-points.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and 5-0 A's.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the reason for wakefield starting really sounded like bill jamesisms going way too far. but i'm really liking this game. erubial durazo finally shows up!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, silly cult-of-Bill-James type stuff led to the decision to start a knuckleballer? Even better.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

joe morgan's old school afro went on about it:

wakefield -> fly-ball pitcher
lowe -> not
oakland stadium -> most foul territory of any ballpark
oakland hitters -> hit fly foul balls
THUS
wakefield -> ownz
EXCEPT
wakefield -> suckz

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

oakland stadium = oakland coliseum = network associates coliseum = NET ASS

a bosox fan (who sometimes posts here) asked me if it was windy in oakland earlier today and i said (10-20 mph -> West = Right Field) and he said "so long as there's wind. on calm days the knuckleball doesn't dance."

eek!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

is it bill simmons that calls johnny damon "frozen caveman centerfielder?" i think that everytime i look at his 3rd-tier british invasion haircut

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

(ps: yanc3y i miss(ed) you)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

(pps: gygax! i miss(ed) you too)(gonna go see turing machine tonight. want me to deliver a message? whenever you come east i'll introduce you to justin. great dude!)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm... last time i checked you weren't too hot on their new material, has this changed?

do they remain a 3 piece? are there plans to record? release? is it a James Murphy/DFA production? tour? the west?

and no introductions to a. "justin" chearno necessary... having seen the mighty 'blende twice and hearing their records is evidence enough of the dude's greatness.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(i yelled something funny at him last year in SF when he played the eagle with PANTHERS)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

lowe sucked on the road this year also right? (f'rinstance - last night!)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

they remain a three piece. they're in the midst of recording with the dfa. not sure who's putting it out. supposedly he's gonna gimme some demos!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally! I'll take your word for it. Goooo TWINS!!!

Nothing makes me happier than to see the love for my boys on ILE.... aside from seeing the Twins take two from the Yankees out east. Sweet Jesus, with Brad Radke out there, good things better happen.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 2 October 2003 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oakland up 2-0

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 2 October 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Twins 1, Yankees 1, bottom of 6th...

suzy (suzy), Friday, 3 October 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Minnesota is losing their shit suddenly.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 3 October 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeter is the cutest athlete in the world! He reminds me of a cat. Anyway, what the hell happened to Minnesota this inning?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 3 October 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Minnesota was losing their shit, and believe me... so was I.

A rally (obviously, a distant prospect) is crucial in the 8th, not the 9th.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Friday, 3 October 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh god, my world is crumbling. "Wait til next year". < / typical red sox fan>

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 3 October 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, what the Hell would you do if the Sox won it all? You wouldn't know. That's what happens when you don't get to party for 100 years.

ModJ, Friday, 3 October 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I already told work if the Sox won it all, they wouldn't see me for a week. I told my wife the same thing.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 3 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

me too, i got permision from work to go down to boston to party (which will problably won't happen). working for a baseball fan rules - my boss is planning on going down to san fran for the next round, if they make it. (from toronto)

dyson (dyson), Friday, 3 October 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously. Boston will fall into the sea if they win it all.

ModJ, Friday, 3 October 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank fuck I'm not seeing any of this shit in real time. Lowe coming in from the bullpen was one of the worst playoff moves I can remember a Red Sox manager making, in a long line of them. Talk about fucking with a guy's head!

And something's seriously wrong with Nomar. His head hasn't been in the game for weeks.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 3 October 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe he's in love?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 3 October 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude. His girlfriend's a winner. What's his problem?

ModJ, Friday, 3 October 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

His nose is too big. Grady Little as Forest Gump.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 3 October 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Forrest Gump would have WON by doing something retarded...

ModJ, Friday, 3 October 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

GODDAMN WOODY

Leee (Leee), Friday, 3 October 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Pudge is psyched up!! The whole team came out of the dugout to greet him - you don't often see that..

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 3 October 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Kirk Reuter watches Pudge's HR

Leee (Leee), Friday, 3 October 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Feliz I kiss you! We have a new game!

Leee (Leee), Friday, 3 October 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Nomar is batting in front of Todd Walker - if he actually sees strikes anymore, I'll eat my hat. Never mind the brilliance of Grady Little to A) replace Walker defensively in Game 1 (an understandable move, given Walker's hands of stone) so that extra innings see Damian Jackson sandwiched between Nomar & Manny, and B) bat Walker 3rd AGAIN against Barry Zito in Game 2, who, last I checked, was one of the best left-handed pitchers in all of baseball.

Also, yanking Kim in the 9th of Game 1 (2 outs) to play leftie-leftie games is 13 types of stupid. Why not just keep Timlin in to start the 9th if you're going to go back to committee work? And would Manny like to bring a bat to the plate when it's time to hit tomorrow?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 3 October 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

God this game is killing me.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 3 October 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

AARGGGH Yorvitt I'm making your card!

Leee (Leee), Friday, 3 October 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Walking Bonds almost backfired there....!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 3 October 2003 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having the phear that my "The Curse must live on" comment offended the baseball or ironing gods.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 3 October 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

WHY AM I STILL AT WORK

Leee (Leee), Friday, 3 October 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The Fish are losing :( They are the only NL team I don't h8.

This is enough for me to take up Evil.

Leee (Leee), Saturday, 4 October 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

And what have we learned from this, kids?

THE RED SOX SUCK ASS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 4 October 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

If setting league records in slugging & leading the world in all sorts of hitting categories = "suck ass", then I hope they continue to rim it for the next couple of years. And, Dan, I hope they do you first.

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 4 October 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

But Daver, if they keep doing what they're doing, they will NEVER win the World Series.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 4 October 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

how your Twins doing Dan?

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 4 October 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Pudge I kiss you

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow!! What a game! PUDGE!! What a player!!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

he basically won that series for them. What a great, great pickup by the Marlins brass.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

how your Twins doing Dan?

They'll be fine, Goddammit!!!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Still.... no matter what happens, it can't be worse than those last two games against Anaheim last year. We got SPANKED!

* cringing at the possibile scenario he just ushered in to prove him wrong. *

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 4 October 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

OH SURE all the naysayers come around to shit the bed when the Red Sox get sand kicked in their face, but when that 98 pound weakling bulks up and starts to dish out a little revenge, where are you folks?

Granted, the bulking up consisted of some divine umpire intervention and four E's from the A's and a guest appearance from Jesus Christ (in the form of Trot Nixon's 11th inning Wonderbat), but, still, a win's a win. And Bobby V is a whiny bitch.

And now it's Tim Hudson against John Burkett. Woo. Maybe if Burkett pitches w/ a bowling ball, there's a chance of something good happening. For the Sox, that is.

And I still can't belive Sammy JUST GOT UNDER that pitch.

And yeah.

There! Now try to make me wish I hadn't said that, muthafuckahs!

Trent, Monday, 6 October 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

might the marlins have the best postseason winning percentage of all time?

marlins pitching staff after beckett -> subpar
cubs lineup after sosa, ramirez and alou -> subpar
cubs in 6; look for juan cruz to have a huge series (the kid can throw)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone have a screen capture / picture of byung hyun kim's one finger salute to the fans of Boston?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Juan Cruz?? I have warmed up to him, for sure, after despising him last year, but he barely gets in the game anymore.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i say cruz does well cuz with clement and even zambrano, they're gonna need some strong long relief. every series there's the nearly unknown that pops up and makes big plays, i'm just saying for this series it's cruz for the cubs and cabrera (superstud to be) for the marlins.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 6 October 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The local Fox affiliate just gave me a damn heart attack because they claim to have the Red Sox-A's game on now, ending in half an hour, and I thought for a minute I'd completely flubbed what time it was going to be on. (Of course, they also claim they're showing a Yankees-Twins game tonight.)

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 6 October 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The game is over, Bill Mueller hit a 5 run homer off Foulke down by four, then made an unassisted triple play in the home half of the ninth.

I'm still waiting for BP to wrap up. I mean, the crappy Alex Gonzalez hitting opposite field homers shouldn't happen in video games, let alone this real world place.

Also, Thom Brenneman & Psycho Steve Lyons = me watching the game on mute (which sucks, because I like Al Leiter as a commentator, but I'm gonna let a few rotten apples spoil the soup, for tonight, at least). Kudos to whoever shut Brenneman up last night in the 8th or 9th inning before he went off on Manny's "showboating" for the 97th time.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(cough) what ?

calstars (calstars), Thursday, 9 October 2003 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

As a (pity me) Pirate fan, I don't much care, but come on--Petitte's yr best pitcher and you simply cannot lose the first two at home against one of the best hitting teams ever. That said, I'm thinking the Yankees *will* win tonight...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 9 October 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree with you, that it will be tough if we lose this one. But Clemens is on deck for games 3 (his last ever at Fenway) and 7 at the Stadium, the two places where he's made his name - and this is his last year - you know he won't lose those games. This is it for him and he won't go out without wins.

calstars (calstars), Thursday, 9 October 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not convinced he has a choice. And though Wells was splendid against the Twins, I don't have much faith in him. Nor in anyone between the starter and Rivera, except for maybe Contreras...

One plus of my Yankee-fan gf going away for the weekend is that I can root full-out for the Sox without getting punched.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 9 October 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Yanc3y - we're 6-1 when losing the first game of a series.
Bring it on, sockboys.

just to note for those keeping score at home: 3 of the 4 teams to advance to the 2003 N/A-LCS lost the first game of the best of 5 N/A-LDS (marlins, yankees, bosox).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 9 October 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

WHO IS GYGAX! ROOTING FOR?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 9 October 2003 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not rooting for any team in particular. probability wise, i think the AL champion will win the world series. the sox victory over the As was a pyrrhic one, i don't think they can hang with los yanquis, despite wakefield's effort. the last week+ will catch up to the bosox sooner rather than later. they'll settle for the split in the bronx and take it back to fenway where they can go back to stealing signs, and they'll postpone the inevitable to a possible game 7.

i predicted either the cubs or the bosox would make it to the WS; however, i don't think the odds of both of them advancing is very promising. yanquis/marlins = yanquis.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 9 October 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha. and you make fun of mr tabitha soren--no more stats or predictions, pick YOUR team. um, dammit.

I agree, gygax, pick a team, any team. How is it interesting if you don't?

Grady "Forest" Little is a fucking idiot. Damian Jackson instead of the red hot Todd Walker. Lefties are hitting .321 off Petitte. Grrr. Angry.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 October 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yankees win, fuckos. Taste it, Boston. Etc

God fucking Clemens is pitching the next game; I hope the Boston fans eat him. Then RoboRivera will come in and save the game regardless and hey, no more Clemens and everyone is happy.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 10 October 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Roger vs. Pedro... good luck fat boy.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Grady Little = worst postseason manager since Bob Brenley

Clemens doesn't have two tough wins in him. Yes, he pitched well against the Twins, but he ain't a great pitcher no more. His 2001 Cy Young season was total bullshit! He won solely cuz of wins, a team stat...

World Series will be: Yankees & Marlins, and America sleeps through what should be a good one.

Mastercard is shooting "priceless" commercials right now about the Cubs and Sox in the playoffs (my roommate left for Wrigley last night to shoot; goes to Fenway on Sunday), thus they're jinxed yet again.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 10 October 2003 13:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It should end with David Ortiz squatting in the Bronx after the Sox win the world series. "Taking a steamy dump on Yankee's Stadium....Priceless."

I had a feeling the Cubs wouldn't close it out today. Oh well, Prior's starting Tuesday...

hstencil, Sunday, 12 October 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah me too. I highly doubt the Marlins can win two at Wrigley against Prior and Wood, but if they do, people here are gonna be jumping out of windows.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 13 October 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Last night I was at a wedding in Boston at the Ritz. All the Yankees were staying there. I was in the elevator at one point with Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, and Aaron Boone. I met Jetes, Wells, Pettite as well as the shitty Giambi, Jeremy. Also saw, Contreras, Sojo, and that punk Garcia.

In the elevator my friend and I mad Mariano laugh. The elevator was packed and some woman was trying to get in. My wife said "Aren't you the closer to him." I followed up with "Well why don't you close the door?" He laughed and closed it.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 13 October 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoa Chris!!!! I have a feeling I'd melt around Mariano too, despite the pinstripes. He's other-worldly. The other guys can go to hell though.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 13 October 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's just one of those situations, something stupid like that happens it takes a while to recover but you don't really have the time to recover in a playoff baseball game and the more things go to shit, the worse the nerves get and it's like a game of dominoes.

That's really amazing to me that someone would've done that, I'd not even think of it, especially if a player was reachign for the ball!

Ally-zay, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Little boy, in a baseball hat,
Stands in a field, with his ball and bat,
says "I am the greatest, player of them all"
puts his bat on his shoulder, and tosses up his ball.

And the ball goes up, and the ball comes down,
he swings his bat all the way around,
and the worlds so still you can hear the sound
as the baseball falls, to the ground.

Now the little boy, doesn't say a word,
picks up his ball, he is undeterred,
Says "I am the greatest, there has ever been,"
and he grits his teeth, and tries it again.

And the ball goes up, and the ball comes down,
he swings his bat all the way around,
and the worlds so still you can hear the sound
as the baseball falls, to the ground.

He makes no excuses, He shows no fear,
He just closes his eyes, and listens to the cheers.

Little boy, he adjusts his hat
picks up his ball, stares at his bat,
says "I am the greatest, the game is on the line,"
and he gives his all, one last time.

And the ball goes up, like the moon so bright,
Swings his bat, with all his might,
and the worlds as still, as still as can be,
and the baseball falls, and that's strike three.

Now its supper time, and his Mama calls,
little boy starts home, with his bat and ball,
says "I am the greatest, that is a fact,
but even I didn't know, I could pitch like that."

Says, "I am the greatest, that is understood,
but even I didn't know, I could pitch that good."

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you felicity for rising to the defense of those who listen to the call on their headphones. I used to have tickets next to a lady who had the call on her headphones (one ear only), kept score, and also had a Sony Watchman portable TV going at the same time.

so what exactly happened (for those of us home briefly in between drinks/dinner)? did prior's arm fall off?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, i was just gonna say he was probably sitting there keeping score too.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Some kid interfered with a foul ball... kinda. Interference was not officially called. And then that seemed to set up this fucking landslide wherein the Marlins scored 8 runs in one inning. Brutality, I tells ya.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Red Sox!!! Felicity is the funniest person on this board.

Ally-zay, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Interference wasn't called because the ball was just this side of the seats, but in layman's terms it was clearly interference.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dusty should've taken Prior out before the 8th, that's what happened. It's not entirely his fault, but there's no need to test a pitcher when you're 6 outs away from going to the Series.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah, F that hindsight crap. He put in Farnsworth and look what happened? If he had put Farnsworth in at the beginning of the inning and he proceded to blow it, you'd be saying 'Dusty should've never took out Prior. There's no need to go your bullpen when your star pitcher has a shutout going'.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

At least Dusty didn't give Prior the game ball

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

their fans, apparently.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, so I wasn't the only confused one.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Randall Simon. Randall Simon. I'll go away now.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, if Dusty had only put in the tall right-hander Simon Reynolds instead of Farnsworth everything would have been different.

??

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

no way oops, Prior's stuff was up in the 7th. I almost thought the first out of that inning was a homer. I'd take my chances with Farnsworth in and nobody aboard rather than put him in in a situation where it's starting to look hopeless.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna say "throw it," but Kenan is correct. I find myself unable to muster ANY sympathy for the interferer. I keep trying, but.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh right, sorry. I forgot that you know better than the manager who got the team to the frickin playoffs. This is why I don't talk about sports with people after a game. Monday-morning quarterbacking=Major League Dud

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

well how's about this then: I told one of my roommates (we were all watching the game) during the top of the 7th that even though Prior has the ability, I didn't see the point of leaving him in for the complete game.

Dusty is a good manager, but I don't think that at least some of the criticism he's gotten for handling pitchers has been unfounded. If anything, leaving Prior in is a way for him to fend off similar criticism to that he got last year for pulling Ortiz.

(not to mention your "you're not the manager who got them to the playoffs" argument is just as stupid as the usual ILM-invading-DMB-fan canard of "if you hate Dave Matthews so much, let's see YOU make an album that sells as many copies." That's the fucking dud, dude. It's not like I'm happy they lost!)

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear ya, but not only are you not the manager who got them to the playoffs, but you weren't there. You don't know Prior from Adam's ox. You were watching the game on TV hundreds of miles away. Prior has nearly gone the distance in every playoff game so far.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather hear Monday-morning quarterbacking than be stuck in a fucking meeting at a coffeeshop during the game and getting absolutely no sympathy upon hearing the Marlins had taken the lead -- in fact, having to hear my bandmate basically say that sports are ridiculous and it doesn't matter cuz the Cubs aren't going to win, anyway: That's the fucking DUD of all DUDS!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sports are ridiculous, unless you enjoy them. Same with sex.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

oops I've watched every Cubs playoff game this year because I'M A CUBS FAN, DUH. I know who Mark Prior is, I know he can pitch complete games, AND I ALSO KNOW HIS PITCHES WERE UP DURING THE 7TH AND HE LOOKED TIRED.

I am not the only person who will make this argument, either, so get used to it.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

(Dusty did have a tendency in the regular season, though, too, to leave pitchers in too long -- almost to counteract the fact that his predecessor, Don Baylor, usually went to the bullpen too soon.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:42 (twenty-two years ago)

in 1998, the last time the Cubs went to the playoffs, I WORKED AT WRIGLEY FIELD. So don't tell me I'm not a fan, have no interest, don't know anything, and can't say whatever the hell I want when the Cubs blow leads.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sports are ridiculous, unless you enjoy them. Same with sex.

Oh, agreed. Same with a lot of things. It was mostly his flippancy that got on my nerves.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

What does it have to do with Dusty? THat is like the LAST guy I'd blame if I was a Cub fan (thank god I'm not).

-L Castillo walked, J Pierre to third on wild pitch by M Prior.
-I Rodriguez singled to left, J Pierre scored, L Castillo to second.
-M Cabrera safe at first on error by shortstop A Gonzalez, L Castillo to third, I Rodriguez to second.
-D Lee doubled to left, L Castillo and I Rodriguez scored, M Cabrera to third.
-K Farnsworth relieved M Prior.
-M Lowell intentionally walked.
-J Conine hit sacrifice fly to right, M Cabrera scored, D Lee to third, M Lowell to second.
-T Hollandsworth hit for C Fox.
-T Hollandsworth intentionally walked.
-M Mordecai doubled to deep left center, D Lee, M Lowell and T Hollandsworth scored.
-M Remlinger relieved K Farnsworth.

Regardless of the Castillo 3-2 pitch, does Prior still have to walk him? On a wild pitch? How about Alex Gonzalez booting an easy double-play ball? Doesn't that have more significance than some poor kid who was perfectly within his rights to make a play on a foul ball? Should Sammy have missed the cutoff man, allowing Lee to walk into third base? Should that Frankenstein-looking goofball Farnsworth give up a bases-clearing double to the like of Mike freakin' Mordecai?! Those players lost that game on the field, not Dusty, not "the fan".

This whole thing was so Cub-like. One of the craziest things, biggest meltdowns, I've ever seen. Yet, during the whole thing I can't say I was surprised. I predicted as much upthread. Anyway, the jinx was in earlier today, what with all the pre-game crap. All the shows on WGN and FOX, talking about "Please celebrate safely". "When and if the Cubs win, we want everyone to have a good, safe time". The Chicago Police press conferences earlier in the day .... all that crap. Jinx city.

Anyway, I hope Cub fans prove me wrong about their mob-like, goonish mentality. On WGN after the game they had a camera in front of "the fan" and the police escorting him out on the concourse ... The fan was putting his jacket over his head to protect his face... some fans continued to try to throw things at him .. even WITH the police right there! Police had to rough up a couple people who continued to try to get close to the fan. Then the camera cut away, back to the studio. Unbelievable.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I WORKED AT WRIGLEY FIELD.

But hstencil, you weren't IN THE DUGOUT. (I'm with ya on this one now.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but I wasn't in fucking BOLINGBROOK neither.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(I mean, I don't know if I agree with your essential point that leaving Prior in was the major mistake, but hell, you can say whatever you damn well please.)

xpost: Heh.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

you ever leave a party for a couple of hours and then when you get back you find out a couple of your friends got in a big ugly fight and noone's really talking to each other and two of your friends who never really got along are fucking in the bathroom and your one friend is off to the side laughing and going 'holy shit man holy shit you missed it'. this is what it was like for me to turn on the radio tonight to find out what happened in the games today.

MUTHA FUKK TRADDISHUN! GO FISH!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, go least interesting World Series Ever! Whoo-eee!

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you know it won't be interesting? It hasn't been played yet.

I mean, I guess you sort of have to be a fan of a sport to watch top athletes perform regardless of made-for-Hollywood "storylines".

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but I wasn't in fucking BOLINGBROOK neither.

-- hstencil

And see how I'm not criticizing any players or coaches? Thank you for proving my point.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

And anyway, how would the Fish (who've never lost a playoff series) beating the Cubs (who just won their first) be a break with tradition?

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

what point oops? We were both watching it on TV, BIG FUCKING DEAL.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You're so cute when you're angry, stency-poo.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what all the girls say, oops.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

How do you know it won't be interesting? It hasn't been played yet.

I'm trying very hard to think of something that could be interesting about a Yankees-Marlins matchup.

[sound of brow furrowing]

Nope.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

jack mckeon-don zimmer mudwrasslin

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Note that Blount said "fuck tradition," which is not the same as advocating a "break with tradition" -- the former could mean, "fuck the history and tradition of baseball, which dictates that people want to see the Cubs win." Maybe?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Well then, Brian once the Cubs are done you and the rest of the bandwagoners (and this town is positively lousy with them) can go back to not caring at all about sports at all. Thank god.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

So I can't criticize you for criticizing someone because I'm in Bolingbrook? Am I getting that straight? Or am I supposed to be ashamed to live there? I just didn't get that.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:12 (twenty-two years ago)

no I just meant that you were watching the same damn network feed as I was.

But yeah, Bolingbrook sucks.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Much as I want to see the Marlins lose and lose hard, the meltdown was both entertaining and satisfying.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Finally a point we can agree on, joel

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Diamond, there's a difference between not being excited about a Yankees-Marlins series and being a Cubs bandwagoner. And you're right, the series hasn't been played, but surely you can anticipate what it might be like -- 2001 turned out to be a great World Series, but even before it started, there was excitement about the Yankees bats facing Johnson and Schilling. I'm not looking forward to a Yankees-Marlins series, but not just because I'm a Cubs fan. Even if the Marlins win, I'd have rather seen them face the Red Sox or A's. Hell, Yankees-Giants would've been more interesting.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Well then, Brian once the Cubs are done you and the rest of the bandwagoners (and this town is positively lousy with them) can go back to not caring at all about sports at all. Thank god.

Well then, Mr. Diamond, you can go fuck yourself. You don't know

a) me
b) how long I've been a fan

But feel free to theorize, genius.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: my beloved hometown,

Hstencil -- how do you know?

Oops -- so why are you still there?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

PS Blount, you've got me.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Much as I want to see the Marlins lose and lose hard, the meltdown was both entertaining and satisfying.

I don't get this. You want the Marlins to lose because they beat your Giants? So how was the meltdown satisfying, then?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

No scrilla, John. Can't find a decent, steady job. May soon be moving to my sister's couch in SF while I look for a one there and/or go back to school..

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry jaymc, but I have been there. At least take solace in that it's not as bad as Naperville.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

*shrug* I'm always excited to watch the World Series. It's the World Series.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a big steaming pile of schadenfreude. Believe me, I'd love to see a CubSox WS, but I also haven't seen one of the most notable curses in action before (though there might as well be a move-to-the-west-coast curse). (Also, game 4 of the LDS FLA-SF had about as much bumbling around as this game.) A little resentment of Dusty, as well. Misery hearts company.

But Wood better pull through tomorry.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Well right, you're a real fan. Doesn't it suck to know so many fake fans will be watching too? How can you stand it?

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

But Wood better pull through tomorry

I really, really hope so. If he weren't starting I'd give them very little chance.

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

but I also haven't seen one of the most notable curses in action before

You don't actually believe in it, do you?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

This is baseball, of course I believe in it!

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm a fake fan. I'm a bandwagoner. I just got to Chicago, and already I'm rooting for your team and increasing the viewership for your teams' games and buying your teams' merchandise and paying your teams' salaries.

Eat shit. You need me more than I need you.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Fake baseball fans getting irate over something they will have forgotten once people start talking about the new Survivor round ye ole watercooler vs. Indie ethixxx applied to Amerikkka's pastime (baseball = the one sport indie fuxors can love)

Re Dusty -> Bad pitcher management is a hallmark of his, always has been (before the tolberg firing it was the marlins' sole identity). leaving prior in to toss 130,000 pitches in game 2 with a 24 run lead? dumb. after game 6? i can't decide if it makes that earlier decision undumb or dumber. ans: both.

blaming the fan for the loss: total bullshit. every cub immediately began scapegoating WHILE THEY STILL HAD A THREE RUN LEAD

why a marlins-yankees series could be interesting -> young marlins team shows no fear, outpitches the yanks (beckett = instant prior-like superstar (he MIGHT be a better pitcher)), takes it the distance. david and goliath only this david hasn't been relishing the fuck-up role for 100 FUCKING YEARS. sure, it'd be a low rated world series (prolly not as low as the subway series -> the duddest of all duds), but look at it this way: every indian fan would find themselves rooting for the yankees for the first time ever (cleveland's two biggest enemies: modell and that 97 marlins squad)! plus, we get to see miguel cabrera transform from hype to stud before our eyes, dontrelle from stud to hype in a kordell-like implosion. fun!!!

(sorry. i watched putney swope tonight and i'm on an experimental blaxploitation baseball kick)

also: JEFFREY FUCKING MAYER!!!!

What happened to this guy? It's as if a fairy told him that throwing in the dirt imparts eternal life. If that's the case, more power to him.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

It was great in game 5, when they kept showing his mother. By the end of the second inning, they were showing an empty seat.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I wish I watched Putney Swope instead of the game tonight. I'd be in a better mood.

hstencil, Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh, I knew a guy in college five years ago with an old Astros jersey. He was quiet, gay, and into Aphex Twin.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

dontrelle's just trying way too hard. there's pressure on him. he's trying to force himself to pitch well, and as a result he's trying to place his pitches, thus his release is waaaaaaaaaay too late. end result = dustball

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

...with an old Astros jersey. He was quiet, gay, and into Aphex Twin.

There but for the grace of God...

That's not me, man. I much prefer Road Rules.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

So.....that was an *interesting* game to say the least.

And to think, I was a mere 50 feet away from all the excitement.

You could just tell after Alex G. messed up a sure DP that the cat was out of the bag, and fuck me if the Cubs didn't prove themselves worthy of that Curse mantle they've been saddled with.

My favorite moment: when Cub fans cheered on the play where the Marlins took the lead 4-3 (presumably because the run scored on an out -- "an OUT!" said idiot fans must be thinking). Uh, you're cheering because you got an out at the expense of your rapidly diminshing lead? Whatevvar.

OK, so all the pressure is on Wood. Can the Cubs deal?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I know this: I'll be breaking a sweat for game 7. Whether that turns to resignation and disappointment soon thereafter remains to be seen, but I think it'll at least be a tense, involving game.

I fear being around my girlfriend if they start losing. This is a girl who can barely handle losing at cards. You should've seen her tonight. Sheesh.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

BBT, I saw yr picture at WSI. Classic! Take anymore good ones?

Wood ain't no guarantee. He's been living a charmed life for a while here. Perhaps he has really finally put it all together. Seems to me the old 5 inning Kerry Wood is due to show up one of these days. you know, the guy that was third in the league in walks, that led the majors in hit-batsmen, etc... Either way, it should be a great game.

Yance-mo, you best not be calling me no corny indie fux0r - I'm a hockey fan, goddammit!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Wood ain't no guarantee.

Behold! The insight of the true fan!

Yo, I'm sporting The Rambis this winter. You better believe it.

I'm so annoyed that all the commodified-hipster places jumped on the really terrible retro logos so fast. That old Nuggets logo is total classic, but now it's every fucking Urban Outfitters coast to coast. If I ever see it combined with a Jesus Is My Homeboy trucker hat there will be physical violence.

rob geary (rgeary), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought for a moment that I wanted Rambis glasses but then I realized what I actually wanted were this guys':

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

mr. d, I ain't comin atchoo with nuthin, i assure you. but whachoo gonna do when there's no nhl next year?

anyway, i'm with you on the 5-in(ch)ning wood tonight, and i think redman will struggle as well. both pitchers are gonna be sooooo damn nervous, so i'm expecting poor control and the bullpens to take over fairly early. final score in the 7-6 range, though don't ask me who'll win (but i gotta say, you couldn't get me to bet against pudge right now. the best postseason i've ever seen for one dude).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate baseball right now.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 15 October 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the Fox Sports site had their other-angle clip that showed Zimmer running around the crowd to zero in on Pedro like a bull to Superman's cape, but my browser doesn't like their site right now, so I'm not positive.

if this bitch is gonna be a marlins v. bosox series, then i will officially not give a fuck. i won't root for the marlins, 'cause they committed the cardinal sin of knocking out the phillies. and i can't root for the bosox after saturday -- that would tantamount to rooting for nazi germany in WWII.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the problem with rooting for the redsox is boston's full of assholes

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Unlike where?

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i want the marlins to beat the yankees, but i don't want the yankees to beat the bosox. what's an orioles fan like me to do?!?!?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The city of Atlanta may not be comprised of assholes, but by god, their team is.

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you mention vick and my heart melts. all is forgiven.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha the braves ... a franchise so lame, that even BOSTON didn't want 'em!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don't you just go stick your cock in Vick's ass already, Yancey, damn.

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

MAYBE I WILL ALLY! MAYBE I WILL!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

GET IN LINE YANCEY!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, they should've learned from Steinbrenner -- if yer gonna spend zillions of $$ on ballplayers, then you've actually got to win it all more than once a decade! (come to think of it, the mets and phils should also learn that lesson, but i digress). otherwise, a team should just go indie and lo-fi like the marlins or the a's.

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OKAY THEN I'M BEHIND BLOUNT!

(can i take that back?\)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Why don't you all just stick your cocks in John Rocker's ear and then fucking wave a goddamned bible at Andy Pettite while you do it with a fucking loop of Billy Corgan's rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" going in the background then? ASSHOLES.

Allyzay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't hear Corgan's rendition!!! I yelled at the bartender to mute the jukebox and blast the TV but she wouldn't listen! Was it awesome and angsty so that "the ballgame" sounded like an abusive dad??? i hope so!!!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i was only rooting for the cubs b/c the marlins knocked the phillies out of the wild-card slot (OK, i admit the phillies knocked themselves out by underachieving). as fer the bosox, my hatred for them is (a) 'cause i also root for the Yankees; and (b) part and parcel of my general dislike of boston as a city (and bostonians as people).

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Corgan is a funny guy. He is actually a really, really big cub fan.

Anyway, I pray for a Marlins over Yankees WS. That would truly rock EVERYTHING. Pudge, Cabrera, Beckett ... unbelievable. Just unbelieveable.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude!!!! After he sang it, Corgan wept like an infant and then he cut off his ear and stuck in it Al Leiter's pants!!!!!!!!!!

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

that is the single greatest thing i have ever read. i am 1000000000% serious. there is nothing left to live for.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Pedro has his A game tomorrow (er tonight) and just throws down like a 3 hitter. The best thing about living in the NYC is when the home teams lose the media goes ape shit. It is so much fun.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

It would rock nothing. Fuck the Marlins.

jackson anderville, Thursday, 16 October 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but first Corgan shrieked "let's get some runs," which put strain on my mental facilities. Boston doesn't deserve such hatred. It is not Montana people.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

what's wrong with joe cool? you a bengals fan?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to clarify: I only hate Montana.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Thursday, 16 October 2003 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Grady Little is a genius!!

;) Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't take this. This is killing me, if I don't have a heart attack before tonights game....

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Me and 2 other guys are trying to persuade a certain BBQ joint off Oxford Street to open up the downstairs just for us. It might cost 10-20 pounds each and I'll only get 3 hours' sleep before class tomorrow but how can I not? There is going to be actual auto-cannibalizing on live TV! Clemens is going to get so mad he's going to eat his own face off!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

And Zim will eat the scraps.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

or shove them up Torre's giant nostrils.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 16 October 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

His nostrils are almost as big as Posada's ears!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer you are so getting bang for your buck in the Sox drama department here.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude the owner of B0d3an's is from Kansas City and we did an impromptu "lock-in"!! He let us hang out downstairs and he even watched the rest of the game with us! Dude he gave us FREE BEER!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 16 October 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Clemens is going to get so mad he's going to eat his own face off!

Dude, Yancey might've already said that the thing about Al Leiter and Billy Corgan's ear was the greatest thing ever said, but this is better.

Anyway, there is nothing as big as Posada's ears! Or his nose! His head is so skinny too. He's like an arrow.

Ally-zay, Thursday, 16 October 2003 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Red Sox fans - get thee to an Indian buffet. Have Ex-Lax handy.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 16 October 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a Yankee fan, a Red Sox fan, a Mets fan and a Braves fan climbing up to the top of a mountain
talking about how loyal they are to their team, and how they would do anything for them. Once they reach the top of the mountain the Braves fan screams, "THIS IS FOR THE BRAVES" and jumps off. The Mets fan screams "THIS IS FOR THE METS" and he too jumps off of the mountain. Finally the Red Sox fan screams, "THIS IS FOR EVERYONE" and pushes the Yankee fan off.

It's amazing, I can think of very few athletes who are so consistently delighted and smiley and pleasant-seeming as Derek Jeter. I bet he's mildly retarded, that'd kind of explain it.

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the Aaron Boone signing had nothing to do with money.

The Yankees paroll is three times the Marlins.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah look at all the money the braves spent ... and they have only one world championship over a decade to show for it!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"Three times the Marlins" doesn't disprove my point though, bnw. It's NOT three times the Mets, Braves, Red Sox, etc.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's just 80 million more.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(That doesn't take away from the fact that Grady Little lost this game in my opinion.)

bnw (bnw), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I just find it offensive that people want to toss aside the job Joe Torre does and always throw out the payroll excuse.

And why do the other teams not pay tax!!!!!!!!

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Also bnw you look kind of like Boone to me.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Grady Little--wow, you are terrible.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Somebody needs to make a handy little graph that'll show the correlation between payrolls and standings.

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:49 (twenty-two years ago)

BRING ON IT FUCFACES!

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Go Fish!

bnw (bnw), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Payroll is overrated, though. The Yankees phenomenon is about a lot more than that; it's a snowball effect, for one thing, because the more they win, the more people like Clemens want to sign with them. But even within the money area, facilities play a big enough role that people may as well bitch about that -- that's Steinbrenner's genius, fanaticism, secret, whatever: when he doesn't win a World Series, he overhauls everything.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

here ya go oops -

up here: oakland, minnesota, florida

down there: new york mets, los angeles dodgers, take yr pick between the chisox, phillies, and cards

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 03:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The top six teams, payroll:

New York Yankees $180,322,403 10,764,809
New York Mets 116,253,927 0
Los Angeles 109,248,680 0
Texas 106,277,880 0
Boston 104,873,607 0
Atlanta 103,912,011 0

The teams in the 2003 playoffs:

Red Sox vs. Athletics
Yankees vs. Twins
Marlins vs. Giants
Cubs vs. Atlanta

Start graphing.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 03:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Payroll obviously isn't everything.

But it's a big big help.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Is a scatter plot also a graph?

oops (Oops), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

it let's you get away with mistakes

payroll has nothing to do with why jeter, rivera, soriano, posada, or bernie williams are yankees

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really but it is if it'll make you feel better.

Assistance, the bottom 6 teams, payroll:

San Diego 57,871,722 0
Oakland 56,596,691 0
Kansas City 48,475,322 0
Milwaukee 47,294,226 0
Montreal 45,853,889 0
Tampa Bay 31,660,602 0

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

my heart is broken.

grady should have removed pedro before he pitched to matsui.

jeter is a prima donna. not cute.

god wants me to be an atheist.

the yankees are the team of margaret thatcher, as they prove that there is no such thing as society, just a collection of individuals.

i am going to expatriate.

the worst thing about all of this is that, after watching all the games leading up to this one, i had decided that Giambi and Boone were the most likeable, least chump-like players on the starting team.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

payroll has nothing to do with why jeter, rivera, soriano, posada, or bernie williams are yankees

it has nothing to do with why they *started* as yankees. it has a good bit to do with why they still are.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

That argument makes no sense. Of course its why they still are but as stated previously, if any of them started sucking Steinbrenner would immediately have them killed get rid of them--they pay players for being worthwhile in order to keep them there. He overhauls when the players are no longer worthwhile.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The Yankees paid 1.78 million per win. The Mets paid 1.76.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The Expos didn't *want* to get rid of Pedro, Larry Walker, Randy Johnson, etc. in the '90s. The could not afford to keep them. Sure, Steinbrenner butchers/exiles the bad ones. But he has the money to keep the good ones, which not everyone does.

I'm not saying that the success they've had isn't amazing. I think they're a bunch of great players and that Torre has been masterful over the years. They just have opportunities to keep/go get players that other teams simply can't.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

steinbrenner got rid of REGGIE! after the yanks lost in 1981 ... and the reason winfield pissed him off so much is because they didn't win shit when he was a yankee.

so what makes anyone think that steinbrenner would be any kinder to jeter, bernie williams, andy petitte, etc., if they turned into losers? why else does he put up with a grade-A jackass like david wells?

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

ok, it is why they are all still yankees (witness the a's)(god they could still have giambi and damon and tejada)(and of course then beane wouldn't get to show whatta genius he is)(sometimes I think about rooting for the bosox so I could follow a sabermetric team that can resign it's stars)(then I remember that boston is filled with assholes)(and that the redsox are Cursed)(then I watch the marlins and think 'sabermetrics is boring! fuck moneyball! steal second AND third!')

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

hey bnw - how much did the yankees pay for postseason wins vs. how much did the mets pay?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

(Root for the Red Sox anyway and remind yourself that most of their fans don't actually live in Boston.)

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I was leaning toward the bluejays til I saw the awful arena football reject logo they're changing to next year (didn't they just change their logo to the blue jay on roids like last year?)

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I missed the game tonight because I worked (wow!) from like 6:30 AM to 11:30 PM. But on the plus side, I got to meet the Verizon "Can You Hear Me Now?" guy.

hstencil, Friday, 17 October 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, they managed their money worse then the season's greatest trainwreck and still got into the playoffs. I am so impressed.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

what's impressive is that despite having more money than the yanks the bosox ownership and fans still whine about money being why the yanks win and they don't

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

THIS is why Blount is my hero. Blount, you gotta come to Chicago someday. We'll party.

Anyway, just got back home and some quick thoughts: Mariano Rivera.
UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE. I will tell my GRANDCHILDREN about his brilliance.

Aaron Boone: stud. Love that kid. Enrique Wilson??!! Torre, stop yourself. PPhhhtttt. Boone is awesome, Cashman vindicated.

Grady Little: hayseed dolt. But that's the Red Sox for you. What a stupid, stupid franchise. You pick up "wunderkind" James disciple Epstein (wank, wank), but you put a patsy like Little in charge : you get EVERY FUCKING THING YOU DESERVE "red sox nation". Pedro shoul have been OUT OF THERE. But no, puss-ass Little stuck with him and it cost him the World Series. Hey, I know what it's like to have a puss-ass manager; I watched Jerry Manuel act like a big fucking puss with big, bad David Wells in the 2001 season.

Yancey's story about MasterCard's losses = perhaps the GREATEST story of these entire playoffs. MOTHERFUCK those bastards.

Again, in closing - Mo Rivera. Stud, stud, STUD. What an honor it was to watch his brilliance tonight.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 17 October 2003 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, also written on my notes here (forgot to transcribe it): GREAT to see Wakefield take the loss. Just great. Screw that guy and his trick pitch. The sooner he is out of this game, the better.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 October 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

You've gotta be kidding, gygax. I have to believe Dodger management is completely enamored with Dan Evans. The guy that SHOULD have been the GM of the White Sox. But no, Jerry Reinsdorf elected to play some bullshit affirmative action crap. The Dodgers made a good run at it; Perez fell off though. Dreifort went down (no shock there of course). Shawn Green sucked the big one.

Anyway, Evans is a stud. Why would the Dodgers replace him?

I don't see any "James" disciple dolts in the World Series. I see teams with GREAT PITCHING. It's pretty fucking simple when you think about it...

I LOVE the way the Marlins built that team. Just LOVE it. THAT is winning baseball.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 17 October 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Grady Little: He just really wanted to believe that Pedro would reach down deep and find something magical like he's done in the past. but mr. d, the "no sabermetrics teams in the world series" doesn't prove anything. there are a grand total of four teams (a's, sox, jays, pads) using this template, and the padres were, as one writer noted, "the best last-placed team i've ever seen," the jays were in contention (cory lidle where were you???) and we all know about the a's and the sox. point being that the ideas behind james' theories are totally verifiable and after reading moneyball and several baseball abstracts, i'm 100% a believer.

regarding the yanks' blank check... yes, the yankees are good with their money, but not nearly as good as people think they are (sterling hitchcock got something like $7 million the last three years to NOT make a pitching appearance, correct?). and in many ways the yanks DO USE sabermetrics (on base percentage, slugging percentage and walks HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY valued (cue mccarver's droll ass "yankees are PATIENT hitters")), it's just that they've got the money to get players who are good at everything, not just dudes like hatty.

i could go on and on. but lemme say that epstein did a fucking amazing job building the sox this year. yes, the rotation needed work (and it will get the help that it needs), but that lineup was unbelievable. i mean shit, wasn't trot nixon FOURTH in the AL in OPS this year??? so yeah, blame it on fucking grady little and fucking nomar.

padres should be Good next year

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This is what pisses me off about the money argument:

what's impressive is that despite having more money than the yanks the bosox ownership and fans still whine about money being why the yanks win and they don't

A winner is Blount. It's not like the other major market teams couldn't do the same fucking thing. Steinbrenner chooses to. Your owners do not. C'EST LA VIE MOTHERFUCKERS. I can see a Marlins fan making the money argument once they lose to the Yankees, right, "Oh well, if we could afford the Voltron of baseball we'd win too", but hey, the Marlins fan on this thread didn't; in fact he's just made a somewhat opposing argument. Why don't you all inform your ownership to stop being a bunch of tightwads? Oh, right, because it wouldn't matter cos Boston is cursed so they can spend $8 billion and still lose.

Sorry, I thought about this all morning because I saw a fucker on tv bitching about this. The people who make the stupid money argument are also the first people to point out that Yankees fans are front-runner assholes (they're not; nothing different is occuring here than what fans of what any other team would do*, it's just that our team is fucking awesome so we get chances to do this more often which makes it seem assholish): which one is it? It can't be both: if Yankees fans are all a bunch of frontrunner fucks who root root root for the winner team, where'd he get all this money from to begin with? He "bought a championship" because the Yankees have a ton of loyal fans who buy the merch and go to the games JUST LIKE A LOT OF THESE OTHER MAJOR MARKET TEAMS WHO SIT AND BITCH ABOUT HOW NY BUYS CHAMPIONSHIPS. This is the result of dilligent ownership and good management forcing a bunch of grade A prima donna assholes to work well as a coherent team and saying anything otherwise is a disservice to everyone involved, including, IMO, the other team.

It wasn't that long ago that the Yankees were for shit.

* I will note that when the Yankees win we do not riot, loot and kill people unlike quite a lot of cities I can think of in the past 15 years.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Well you make good points Ally. I still hate the Yankees. I don't hate NY, I hate the Yankees.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

FWIW, I prefer the Mets, btw. I'm just overly pissed off about this this morning because not only do I see this on this thread and that shithead on MSNBC or whatever bitching, but 3 people I'm really close to went OFF last night on how Yankees fans are all a bunch of assholes etc etc and I'm like "Yeah, love you too"--I mean I basically go out of my way to make sure I'm clear that I think the Boston team and the Atlanta team (my two most hated teams) are who I dislike in these conversations and it's just like, why fucking bother? I'm going to get called an asshole anyway so I might as well be one

(xpost: Chris, it's not at all directed at you, and I'm not saying I hate Boston fans either! I hate corny indie fuxx apparently)

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And also I'm thinking maybe rioting is a good idea? But in other cities though. "Haha we're assholes right!! HOW YOU LIKE SOME RIOTS!!!" It never made sense to me how like certain teams would win (hello Chicago Bulls and Dallas Cowboys) and the next day you'd see these pandemonium scenes on the news in the cities involved, people beating on each other and busting shit up, why would you do that in your own city to celebrate your victory? You should go to the other city and do that and then piss on their stadium.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the greatest rivalry in sports. I love being part of it...i just wish for once we could win.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife is all depressed today. I'm heartbroken, sure. But I'll get over it, I'm used to it by now living in Boston. Last night on the ride home from the rehearsal dinner the score was 4-0 and my wife was all fired up and going on and on about the World Series. I looked at her and told her not to get her hopes up...it is the Red Sox. She yelled at me "How can you say that." I had to explain that they let us down every year and this year will be no different.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 October 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

This, to be perfectly blunt, is why I've never liked baseball fans very much, and if you need me to explain why, I don't care.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I'm thinking about things and Atlanta fans kind of ARE assholes, I mean what is that tomahawk chop bullshit? That's the most obnoxious thing in sports, more obnoxious than the existance of the Diamondbacks.

xpost, yay Tep is coming to shit on everyone again, hooray--how is that different than the fans of any other sport or basically pissed off fans of anything ever?

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

It isn't.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Other owners (well, one other ownership group apparently) could spend as much as the Yankees is a nice little thought and all, but it does nothing to disprove that the Yankees win because they spend more money. And there's a major hole in the idea because any other team would be bleeding so much red ink with that payroll that there's no way they could sustain it. (But that just proves how brilliant the Yankees are!!!!1111) I guess, but it also puts them at a huge advantage which does diminish their accomplishments (their most recent ones especially). But whatever, I'm done, go Mahlins. (Teams that can run are hotttttt!)

Yes, actually. He has a 2 year deal b-cuz he had Tommy John Surgery. The first year is basically a rights thing to own him and allow him to rehab. The second year is to let him pitch until his arm falls off again.

ModJ (ModJ), Friday, 17 October 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

And there's a major hole in the idea because any other team would be bleeding so much red ink with that payroll that there's no way they could sustain it.

Bull. Shit.

Quite frankly if you're a major market team (read not the Marlins, for example) and you can't sustain a payroll the size of the Yankees, there's something wrong with your attendance/merch figures.

Again, I fail to see how spending money automatically means "huge advantage" that diminishes anyone's accomplishments but also I'm not an emo kid like 90% of the people who bitch on ILE about how much money the Yankees have. And again, where do the Yankees get their money? I fail to see how having loyal, paying fans is something worth punishing, either.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the phillies spent a shitload of $$$ in the 2002 off-season (thome and bell didn't come cheap), and look at where it got them ...

anyway, i guess i can understand sox fans' pain, seeing as i am a phillies fan first (AND WE HAD TO WAIT 100 YEARS FOR OUR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!) and a yankees fan second ... but god, i hate the red sox!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll stop being a complete asshole and just put it nicely and get rid of the bitter losers versus bad winners chip on my shoulder. Spending money is not a necessary correlation to winning and going through the teams in the playoffs the past several years shows this. The highest salaried teams are not necessarily the same as the best performing teams. This "huge advantage" bullshit is a complete dismissal of what is actually going on, which is really excellent management and players gelling together really well. You can pay as much money as you want but if you can't get your high-paid ballerinas to play together nicely and work together as a team unit then you will go nowhere. For example...

In 1993, the Yankees still had the highest average player salary in MLB. In fact, they've rather consistently been the highest paying ballclub in baseball since '77 (and I'm sure well prior to that). In 1993, the Yankees had the worst record in the major leagues. So why didn't their massive salary advantage work then? Why didn't they win the pennant every single year since 1977?

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm convinced Joe Torres nostrils are what provides the Yankee magic every year. I think between innings he takes the Yankees bats and gives them a quick run through his nostrils.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Criticizing the Yankees for spending a lot of money is just sour grapes. What the hell do you expect them to do? Not spend the money so other teams won't feel so bad??? Of course they're going to spend it - it's been working great for them, so why should they stop? If you don't like the fact that the Yankees spend a lot, don't blame the Yankees - blame the commissioner of baseball or whoever makes the rules about these things!

o. nate (onate), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, Ally, according to your link, the Yankees were 88-74 in 1993, 2nd in the AL East.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 17 October 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCK. Now I can't find the year I WAS talking about. Anyway there was one where it said only 54 wins or whatever around that time frame and now I cant find it. Anyway, answer my question. Yankees have always had highest pay in baseball=Yankees should always be in the world series according to ILX indie fuckers.

Chris V OTM, it's Torre's giant nostrils! The other-sport parallel is how Parcells's enormous gut makes every team he comes to go from being laughable to being sehr gut. Maybe he's just figured out a way around the football salary cap and has signed secret robots to all of his teams, like Joe Torre cos everyone knows that its not players or coaches that win games, it's CHECKS.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait! I realized what is wrong, I picked the Mets out instead of the Yankees from that record schedule which makes me look like a moron but that doesn't really hurt my point because I just did the math and the Mets' average player salary was also significantly higher than the average for 1993 and they sucked dick.

o. nate OTM anyway, this is also similar to the fuckers who get pissed off that Yankees fans celebrate the win, "Oh, it's not like your team hasn't been there recently"--oh, excuse me, I'm sorry I'm a supporter of my team and I am pleased when they win, allow me to shed some tears for your team instead and solemnly bow my head in rememberance. Joe Torre said something to this effect in his interview last night, they were like "I guess it must not be so exciting for you anymore, as opposed to teams like the Cubs or Sox blah blah blah" and he looked at the interviewer like they grew another head and was like, "It's always exciting, it's always new, and what are we supposed to do anyway? Roll over and die so that our opponents get a chance? Tell them to win the game and they'll get their chance."

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that ally's point is still valid -- i'm sure steinbrenner paid the '89-'91 yankees buttloads of $$$, and all of those teams sucked. i mean, when MEL HALL and KEVIN MAAS are yer team's biggest stars. but steinbrenner got rid of the both of them, and other underperforming clowns, REAL fast didn't he? i mean, steinbrenner would've gotten rid of a real asshat like David Wells, too, if he was a yankee from 89-91!

Little Big Macher (llamasfur), Friday, 17 October 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Wells really is a dickhead, though, isn't he?

The Yanquis are a profitable baseball enterprise. The Management can afford to overpay for talent because the Yanquis have loyal fans that fill Yanqui Stadium, the TV market is the best in the nation, add in many other lucrative licensing deals and when the dust clears, the Yanquis have made money.

Unfortunately, they are one of the few baseball teams in operation that are profitable. [heavy M.Lewis paraphrase ahead] Bud Selig's economic study of a few years ago seemed to indicate that certain major league teams exist merely to be beaten by the Yanquis and other large market potentially profitable teams. Bud's very own Montreal relocated to a city to be named later Expos for example (who I was rooting for btw). The Expos will be losing their franchise player (maybe the best player in the game) potentially to the Yanquis because the 2-3k fans that on average turnout in Montreal (where there is no local TV/radio broadcast) are obviously not enough to keep the draw. (Ally, the Yanquis tax mentioned above is spent to sustain the league's weaker teams).

Other sports such as basketball and football have instituted salary caps to help evenly distribute talent regardless of a market's size/profit. This does not exist in baseball.

There exists several glaring anachronisms on this thread that I feel I need to point out. The disparity between how much $$$ the Yanquis vs. the average baseball franchise spends today vs. 20, hell even 10 years ago is MUCH larger (see m.lewis preface for the exact $$$s).

Mr. D, Tejada and Beane to LA. Beane wants to move closer to his daughter in THE OC behind the orange curtain. He angered OAK mgmt. on the eve of BOS-OAK game 7 when he quipped to the press "give me another $40MM and we're in the World Series". Guess what? LA has another $60MM to spend.

gygax! predicts yanquis/marlins WS

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 17 October 2003 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally, the Yanquis tax mentioned above is spent to sustain the league's weaker teams

Thank you! It wasn't a facetious question but everyone seemed to take it as such. I understand that the disparity between average Yankee salary to average other team salary is larger now but I don't see how A) that is unfair B) it is the #1 indicator of winning.

I disagree with the salary caps in basketball and football; I believe I said this on several sports threads now.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand that the disparity between average Yankee salary to average other team salary is larger now but I don't see how A) that is unfair B) it is the #1 indicator of winning.

the Yanquis can afford players like Alex Rodriguez (highest paid player in the game) or Vladimir Guerrero when other teams can't. the yanquis can assemble a veritable all-star team because they sustain their profitability even when absorbing greater salary liabilities on top of paying taxes.

Ally, read moneyball by michael lewis if you haven't. based on what you've written in the past 24 hours on this thread, it seems like a rather odd confluence of ideas or maybe you've recently read it but if not it's a good story about how a team like Oakland (with one of the lowest payrolls in the majors: $40-50MM) managed to get to the playoffs in the past 4 years. it's a very "revenge of the nerds", counter-conventional wisdom feel-good pageturner that has been on the NYTimes best seller list for months for a very good reason. there's an odd corporate finance subtext to the book but the story is well told and the ideas are fresh to many baseball fans.

that being said, i'm not entirely sold on the concept of moneyball, i think a blend of sabr-metrics and conventional baseball wisdom is probably the best (general) management style, but as Yanc3y and Blount (and undoubtedly Raposa whose baseball theories/treatices are missed) keep on eye on the Padres next year (even though I think Oliver Perez is a total stud but he could turn out to be Damian Moss next year).

OK I have just had five posts eaten by ILX because the "m" key on my keyboard is acting up and it kept telling me my email wasn't valid. FUCK YOU ILX.

Anyway.

Dude! Other teams can too afford players like Alex Rodriguez! For example the Texas Rangers can afford Alex Rodriguez!!

Seriously though, I just don't see what is so wrong with a team that has higher profits, ie sells more tickets, merch, licensing deals, etc, being able to pay its players, ie the reason for this profitability, more money.

I will pick up that book, I have more time to read now so I have been meaning to get some books.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

calstars (calstars), Friday, 17 October 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a great game but it wasn't as good as the one a few years ago with the Mets-Braves that went on for like 40 innings and then Piazza got an HR or whatever, I don't really remember, by the end of the 36th inning I was kind of drunk and standing in Madison Square Garden in a disoriented fashion with strangers.

Ally-zay, Friday, 17 October 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really think that a salary cap is the answer - it seems kind of unfair to the players at the expense of the owners. After all, if you have an extremely profitable franchise like the Yankees, isn't it only fair that the players - who actually make the team what it is - should get their fair share of the take? You don't hear anyone talking about putting a salary cap on the owners now, do you?

Ally-zay, Monday, 20 October 2003 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

there are ways to get around that problem, though

oops (Oops), Monday, 20 October 2003 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

And how do you propose we do this, oops?

Ally-zay, Monday, 20 October 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't it only fair that the players - who actually make the team what it is - should get their fair share of the take?

A. the owners play a big part in 'making the team what it is', no? The players are employees. In every business venture, owners do very little in the day-to-day operation of things but take in a shitload more money than those who work their asses off. It seems unfair but that's the way it is.
B. the market value of a player wouldn't be diminished by a cap. Players wouldn't make any less, teams would just have less money to throw around so instead of 8 superstars, each team would only be able to afford a couple. Right?

oops (Oops), Monday, 20 October 2003 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

In every business venture, owners do very little in the day-to-day operation of things but take in a shitload more money than those who work their asses off.

OK. Name me another business besides professional sports with a salary cap for its employees.

Ally-zay, Monday, 20 October 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

To your points, Oops:

A. I'm not denying that the owners contribute, but show me the baseball fan who follows a team because he likes the owners. The players make the game great - I'm sorry, but it's just a fact. The rest of your point basically seems to be saying that life is unfair but that's the way it is. Well, if that's true, then why should we be making it more unfair by instituting a salary cap?

B. I'm sorry but this is just bad economics: "Players wouldn't make any less, teams would just have less money to throw around." Uh, no. Those two things are directly related.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 20 October 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

o. nate, I wanted to point out the contradiction in the "life isn't fair" statement myself but decided it was useless. I mean you can take the "fuck you, that's life" statement and apply it to the exact reverse argument. That's the shittiest argument for anything in the history of the world.

Allyzay, Monday, 20 October 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

A. Who drinks Coca-Cola because they like the owners? Your line of thinking---rewarding the players who actually bring in the fans--makes ethical sense, but they are not the ones who put up the capital to finance the team. It's not that life isn't fair, that's just how businesses work. The 'not fair' part is a side effect.
B. The overall amount of money in MLB would remain the same. Teams such as the Yankees would have less to spend, while, say, Oakland would have more.

oops (Oops), Monday, 20 October 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Your plan B sounds more fair to the players, Oops - but it's not a salary cap. Not to be pedantic, but what you propose is something entirely different - it's called profit-sharing. That would have pros and cons of it's own. One con would be that it would remove some of the incentive that owners have to build up their franchise.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm beginning to think o. nate and Ally aren't pinko Commie fags like the rest of us.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I thought it sounded more like profit-sharing, but I was thinking of profit-sharing as being restriced to within one team. That is, if the Yankees pull in a huge profit, only Yankee players would receive a cut of it, not all players on all teams. That doesn't seem like it would stop a team from attracting and keeping a bunch of superstars because a hugely profitable team would still be able to afford to pay huge salaries. It would just be a back-door way of doing so.
I'm not dead-set on a salary cap and I don't think 'you're wrong...I'm right!!'. Just discussing it, yanno?

(xpost)

oops (Oops), Monday, 20 October 2003 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Now I'm confused. Are you proposing that the profits of one team should be shared among all teams, or that the profits of one team should be shared among all the players on that team?

o. nate (onate), Monday, 20 October 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the most boring sports conversations in the world (baseball, football, or basketball) involve the words 'salary cap'

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 20 October 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm....to me, having a 'salary cap' entails sharing profits among all teams, while 'profit sharing' as a term means within a team. (I'm not claiming that's the right way to use those terms)
Profit-sharing within a team doesn't seem like it would solve the fairness 'problem'. Profit-sharing among all teams seems to be the best solution but I must be missing something in the equation. Or is it just that it is a form of *gasp* socialism?

The NY Post is already bored of Marlins. I hope Beckett destroys them.

Actually fuck that 'bount OTM'. The larger economic and social aspects of sports are the types of things that interest me. Talking about who's got the better fastball and what Mr. Manager-guy should've done is what truly bores me.

Unless, that is, you nurse a secret jones for the dismal science.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 20 October 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops, to me, "salary cap" means just what it literally means: a cap on salaries - ie., an upper limit to the maximum salary that any player can receive. If my understanding differs from accepted usage, then I plead ignorance. This in no way implies any sharing of profits between teams - or, as I like to refer to it, "profit sharing". Of the two options, I find the idea of "profit sharing" to be more interesting. On that point, I think we agree. Forgive my ignorance, but isn't there already a limited form of profit-sharing that takes place in MLB? I'll have to do a little digging online.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 20 October 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's an article discussing the MLB profit-sharing deal as it currently stands (or stood in Feb. 2002, assuming it hasn't changed since then):

http://www.sptimes.com/2002/02/24/Sports/Alderson_presses_for_.shtml

So-called "industry-wide" revenue is shared between teams, but "local" revenue is not. The Yankees generated $218 million in local revenue in 2001, and they spent $121 million in payroll. For comparison purposes, Montreal (at the lowest extreme) generated $9.8 million in local revenue, and had a payroll of $31 million.

Can I just scream how much I think Ugueth Urbina is not-all-that-good? You almost *knew* for a fact he would blow the lead in the 9th, after being helped out by some generous strike calls by the home umpire.

If the Fish lose this one, they're done. Can anyone come back 3-1 down to the Yankees?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 23 October 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

woo, go marlins!

(i think they can come back 3-1 against anyone. not that they'll have to now, but i do.)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 23 October 2003 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it any indication of the relative tepidness of this series that the most recent talk in this thread has been over baseball business?

I will admit to not being able to get it up so far. Maybe the LCSes left me spent.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 23 October 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The World Series games have been mostly tight, except for game 2, and game 3 once the Yanks broke it open in the 9th. I'm enjoying them. But yeah, they're missing that Yanks/BoSox energy and the Cubs-can-they-do-it suspense. Still, don't hate: the Marlins are something else, and they are matching up surprisingly well against the Yanks.

Good series, IMO.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Thursday, 23 October 2003 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The games have been tight for the most part, but I still have trouble getting fully behind the Marlins. I thought Yankees-hate would help me out, but it hasn't really kicked in. Game 1, even though it went down to the wire, never kept me as nervous as any of the other playoff games before it.

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 23 October 2003 05:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Games 1, 3 & 4 were fantastic. I don't know what more people could ask for.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

except, I guess for game 2 to have been just as good..

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 23 October 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking as a longtime Cubs fan, the division series were excruciating to watch and draining. I'm sure many Red Sox fans feel the same way. Those two extra inning games, the debacle in game 6/7 and both of Kerry Woods' starts against the Braves wore me out. Between the tension of the games and the lack of sleep going into work, it kind of mentally wore me down. The tension at each pitch in a close game is why baseball is a good game.

I just don't think Yankees fans (who have had many victory celebrations) or Marlins fans (who probably have few diehards) have the same kind of experience.

I've had a weird feeling the Marlins were going to win it all before the playoffs began, there is a post somewhere on ilx that can vouch.

I listened to a few innings on the radio driving home from band practice, but I went to bed when I got home, it seemed like it must have been a pretty good game.

"...it's called profit-sharing. That would have pros and cons of it's own. One con would be that it would remove some of the incentive that owners have to build up their franchise."

The sharing of TV revenue works pretty well in the NFL, other than the Cardnals and Bengals, most francises work every so often towards playoff contention and yet the big city teams (other than LA which has no club) still have the clout to have people wanting to play for them.

There are always going to be a few francises that suck, mostly because the ownership is inept, all sports have a couple clubs that are run that way.

I think another advantage the NFL has is that only individuals, not corporations can be owners of teams.
