tell me about holloway! i live 10 minutes down from archway on hway rd!!! people say there are good pubs but all i've seen is "the coronet"##

favorite 2 things i've found so far: "the aviation bookstore" and a store that sells all types of mannequins

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 October 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth to thread

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 October 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i want a "buss pass" so i can kiss anybody i want

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 October 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

the huge black archway building is very ugly

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 October 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

though it's nice to know that suicide bridge is within walking distance

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 October 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

The cinema on the Holloway Rd is quite good.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the big one, the odeon! it appears to be very well-appointed!! they have a bunch of south korean b-movies playing alongside the regular offerings right now, but i lost my glasses :(

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

that cinema is like a 15-minute walk from my house

i think i'm going to "book" tickets to see kill bill at cinema on the green

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

You're not too far from the Swimmer which has a corking Jukebox and has nice beers

chris (chris), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

so is this your permanent residence now Tracer?

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The cinema on the Holloway Rd is quite good

I've been there many a time. I shall probably be there next weekend with my son for the release of 'Finding Nemo' or whatever it is (he wants to see it). We may well visit the Waterfall Cafe across the road as well.

David (David), Sunday, 5 October 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

tracer you crap, you missed yorkshire pudding dinner

Ed (dali), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Anjelica Huston is a nonce.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 5 October 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a great seedy pool hall right by archway station.

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 5 October 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

There's some nice pubs nearer Tuffnell Park end. And the Dirty Water club by TP tube. For...that sort of thing.

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 5 October 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

...we have good pubs in Tufnell Park? Who knew. The Dirty Water Club is superfantastisch, tho' (I think mediocre garage rock is the greatest genre ever barring possibly shoegazing == I may be biased).

I will hear no disses of the Archway Building: the bit underneath it with all the long-dead shops and old graffiti-slathered scaffolding is my favourite part of defunct London. And Holloway Odeon's alright, but the sound can be a bit dodgy. It's good for emptiness, though. Mid-afternoon weekday cheapoid films you can be the only person in the cinema.

cis (cis), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Lock Stock at that Holloway Odeon. It was the worst moviegoing experience of my entire life.

adaml (adaml), Sunday, 5 October 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Because of the film, or the cinema?

...is it wrong that the nearest I've been to going to the Archway pool hall is playing pool in the quasar place up the road?

cis (cis), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had several of my worst moviegoing experiences at Holloway Odeon (or just 'Odeon' as my son calls it). The worst has to be 'Pirates of the Caribbean', I think.

David (David), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i used ta live in tufnell park. if you slip a little further west into kentish town you can go to the *ahem* naturalist club and get a massage or sit naked at the bar while naked girls chat to you. my wife used to work there. its horrid actually.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a Marxist-Leninist bookshop in Fortess Road (Tufnell Park) that I used to visit regularly as a kid. I wish I could remember what it was called.

There was a whole circuit of them: Banner Books in Camden High Street, Guangwha Co. in Soho of course (I think that's still there),
East Asia Books in Eversholt Street. I can't think of the name of that one in Fortess Road though.

David (David), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Bellman Books, that was it - 155 Fortess Road.

David (David), Sunday, 5 October 2003 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Anjelica Huston has been a nonce for ages now.

darren (darren), Monday, 6 October 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Silverlink - so punctual yet so pointlessly infrequent. And why no direct link onto the Gospel Oak - Richmond line ?

darren (darren), Monday, 6 October 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

my father used to work at the Whittington Hospital and he would always buy a loaf of bread on the way home from one of two bakers in (I think) Junction Road. The bakers were called Rancies and Stagnalls which I hastily rechristened Rancid and Stagnant.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 6 October 2003 07:05 (twenty-two years ago)

tracer, get yr grimey garage from pure groove, which is the archway end of the holloway rd. also, walk down the entirity of the holloway rd (poss. not a good thing) anbd go to tblisi, the georgian restaurant, adn get starters and khachpuri, for the best culinary thing in the world, ever.

ambrose (ambrose), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The Swimmer roXor, Mondy night quiz fun. The Head has a nice old interior but is a bit of a let down in other departments. DO NOT GO IN THE CORONET - Wetherspoons hell hole.

I spend a fair amount of my life in the Holloway Odeon, so good for bumping into. The big question is though: are you a Safeways or Waitrose person.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Angelica Huston is no longer a nonce. Sad.

Along the Archway Road into Highgate, The Winchester Arms is a nice pub with armchairs and a beer garden and very good nice cheapy food. Or The Settle In does a fab Sunday dinner where you get your OWN chicken served up with pride by the barstaff.

Or further up the road is the Boogaloo which is a bit trendified now but still has a good jukebox. Go B-52s.

Also brilliant video shop along the Archway Road. Ah, my old stomping ground, how I miss it

nickie (nickie), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course Upper Holloway is old London Slang for ladies bits.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The Settle Inn is still very much in my bad books for their pub quiz related misdemeanours as detailed here: http://www.freakytrigger.co.uk/pumpkin/2003_08_01_pumpkinpublog_archive.html#106138954353361860

I adore the Whittington and Cat (as also mentioned in that publog entry), not only for its MUMMIFIED CAT ACTION, but I don't adore the Whittington Stone just down the hill, site of one of my greatest moments of solo ruinous folly.

Holloway itself is a notoriously poor hunting ground for decent boozers but the Swimmer is good.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I think you should say The Holloway road is a notorious poor hunting ground, a wander through the backstreets have turned up some rather interesting backstreet and estate boozers.

Scariest pub IN THE WORLD is The Mall, at the basement of Archway Tower with blackened out windows. Just by the good for world cinema Archway library.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 09:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I've obviously roamed the wrong backstreets, because I've never turned up anything of the sort.

Blacked out windows usually = strip pub which = not really a pub at all.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 October 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Ptee am I rite in thinking that Archway library rents out DVDs?? *goggle*

If "notoriously poor hunting ground" = less-dazzling array of options, that's fine by me. I'm lazy and I don't want to think.

The Waitrose/Safeway question sounds like a minefield I'm not sure I want to step into. I'll just end up eating whatever they sell at "Best-In." (Uurggh I am lying, I wish it were that easy though.)

Thanks to everybody for your suggestions and reminisces!! nickie how far along is the brilliant videoshop on Archway Rd?

stevem yes, i am ensconced!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 October 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i have to go up there several times a month for really boring meetings for work...at the London Voluntary Sector Resource Centre, next to Waitrose. and some of those meetings have 'pre-meetings' at the coronet. shudder. and every time i go to the coronet for these meetings, there are several girls that look 14-16 years old wandering around in packs, dressed up in what i would classify as 'pulling gear', such as shiny mini skirts and little halters, etc. since this is usually at 3 in the afternoon midweek, i always wonder...who are they trying to pull?

colette (a2lette), Monday, 6 October 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

on a more positive note, all the islington libraries seem pretty good. although i haven't been to the archway branch, the central branch (down holloway road near the buddhist centre, closer to Hi&I) has tons of videos, DVDs and CDs. and they're pretty quick about requesting stuff from other branches, although i haven't tried that with movies...

colette (a2lette), Monday, 6 October 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a v. good sci-fi bookshop down there. I can't remember the name but it's south from holloway rd tube and opposite a shop called 'fettered pleasures'.

robster (robster), Monday, 6 October 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, it rents out DVD's and videos at a pound a night (two pound for really, really new stuff) - though their definition of night means until the next day when they are open, so Saturday - Monday etc etc. The Thai Restaurant opposite Ma Vie En Rose is very nice too.

And the Bathroom Centre is to die for.

Since when are strip pubs not real pubs? What catagorization madness is this?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The video library is probably a good old walk up, Tracer, so you should probably bus it - less than 10 mins on the bus, probably a 25 minute walk. I didn't realise the Archway Library was good for vids and DVDs though.

Also, if you're up in the Archway region, try Cheekos night club which I always wanted to go to but never did (it's the basement of the Archway Tavern - and it's where a former resident of my old house conceived, yes, conceived her first child. which is lovely)

nickie (nickie), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheeko's Nite-Spot to be precise. It is the fifth circle of hell. Archway Video's shuts stupidly early though.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Bathroom Centre, I know! My Brooklyn apartment was across from "Baths Plus - Kitchens and Baths."

I'm being stalked by an international ring of bath supply-rooms.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 6 October 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Strip pubs are not pubs in the same way that some bars which might appear to all intents and purposes to be pubs aren't pubs. Strip pubs may be nitespots, good call.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 October 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheeko's Nite-Spot is not The Mall though, it is over the road.
(Pubs in the middle fo traffic system / roundabouts classic or dud?)

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I understood that these are two different establishments. A strip pub is not a pub in the same way as a college bar is not a pub. They appear to do the same things as pubs but don't really manage it.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 October 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose the complication with a strip pub is that to all intents and purposes it looks like a pub, unless there are people stripping in it. (I reserve the right to question if a pub is in such an upnleasant place (covered in Angelica Huston Is A Nonce graffiti) and with such a close proximity to the library would be a strip pub.

Hmmm, perhaps further work needs to be donw in this area.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Pete you would surely agree that the unpubbiest ends of the Gastropub continuum have renounced their pubdom even though they look like pubs yes?

Also strip pubs are identifiable as such: they have blacked out windows.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 October 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

rah rah north london massive, N19 in the area etcetc...

also LOOK, it is NICKIE, hello nickie, haven't seen you for ages...

safeway is pretty grim, but they do have an interesting array of non-british foodstuffs and halal meat. waitrose is too posh for the likes of me however, good thing it's easier for me to get ot the tesco's on stroud green road...

alsoalso how can there have been half a dozen posts about strippubs without the flying scotsman getting a mention?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 6 October 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually you can see through the windows of The Mall slightly, they black out with strips.

Hmm, the gastropub question is a difficult one. Is there a point between gastropubdom and restaurantiness? I suggest its a continuum, ditto with strip pubs which runs from quite publike (The Griffin and the Scotsman) to proper strip joints (The Bada Bing...)

Pete (Pete), Monday, 6 October 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

why was i not informed about the existence of strip pubs?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 6 October 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

We took the decision for your own good, Steve.

Tim (Tim), Monday, 6 October 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

MUMMIFIED CAT ACTION

I'm really surprised Dad never mentioned this. I think that he and his colleagues tended to go to the Whittington Stone at lunchtime, rather than the Whittington and Cat.

Incidentally, is the stone statue of Whittington's cat still there on Highgate Hill? I think it used to get vandalised quite regularly so they encased it in a cage, yes?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 6 October 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello Carsmile! I thought I lurked in and out of here unnoticed!!

nickie (nickie), Monday, 6 October 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i was just thinking about you the other day actually, when i was on archway station, can't remember why now, possibly something along the lines of:

>ooh i remember bumping into N and lara when they were on their way to india
>because they'd been staying with nickie
>hmm, wonder what she's up to at the mo, haven't seen her around in ages

type thing...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 6 October 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Whittington's Cat is still there, and indeed caged, poor thing.

cis (cis), Monday, 6 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah! Well, I've moved from old Archway to Turnpike Lane and am very jealous of old Tracer, here, for living near a place *wipes tear* where there are nice pubs... and the possibility of seeing George Michael at any time.

Rather than hijack the Holloway Road thread I think I'll go off and make a tell me about Turnpike Lane thread.

nickie (nickie), Monday, 6 October 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

you're a post-grad student? so, yeah, you should be able to get access to the London Metropolitan University library, it has some cool views! And, don't forget to join the British Library, having a British Library card is cool and they issue them for about 5 years!

jel -- (jel), Monday, 6 October 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

definitely go to the swimmer. it's in eburne road.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 6 October 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
upper holloway, now i'm in ya area

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

well, where?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

same road as where boogie beat records are/were based!

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

blimey...

i was just thinking the other night perhaps we should have a north london(ers only) FAP (kidding about the previous brackets), to show our meerkan visitor the good pub(s) if nothing else. maybe we could go bowling at rowans as well...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

yes please

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes! Can't do until next week, though. Let's hit one of these purported back street taverns, the Swimmer, or Whittington and Cat when Gareth "Back for the First Time" Lee returns from NYC

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

wed12th?

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

in that case gareth, it looks like yr pretty near la porchetta. lets do pizza!

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

do they do slices?!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

wait til i move there ;)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in Spain on the 12th. It so no good for me...

If La Porchetta Did Slices they would be too big for your table.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

is la porchetta the pizzeria on stroud green road? if so, it rules! the pizza, anyway... last time i was there we had calamari and a prawn thing as starters and they were not so tasty.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Upper Holloway == quickly becoming centre of the WERLD.

And North London FAP yay!

cis (cis), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

how about the week after then? the swimmer would be the place i'd say (mmm, lovely geuze...)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

cant do week after:(

can do: 12-14th nov
24th--->

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 28 October 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

la porchetta is the place where the pizzas are 200" in diameter and lovely. it looks kinda tacky inside, and it is wicked. unfortunately, im yet to meet someone who agrees.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Agrees that it is great? Everyone agrees it is great.

I am obv very very happy now I have discovered the one in Bloomsbury (just off Queen's Square).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ssshhhh!!! The one in Bloomsbury is supposed to be a secret!

I mean, it's overcrowded as it is, I don't want to have to wait for my table-sized pizza when I don't feel like cooking and HSA doesn't feel like washing up!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never had to wait in there. The basement is nicely cavernous.

1 litre Carafe of wine £8.50. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm, their house wine is lovely, too.

The basement is cavernous, but it is also ECHOEY AND LOUD AS FUCK which is very difficult for two people with hearing difficulties, such as us, so we prefer to wait for upstairs. Which, mind you, we don't usually have to do (and we'd like to keep it that way!)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, there is always the Isligton branch and the newly opened Exmouth Market one as well a ten miunte walk up the road.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never seen the Islington branch NOT have a queue. I am curious to try the Exmouth Market one, though!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Not sure if it is open yet, though turn around time on building work suggests it should be. Its where Chez Gerard usta be.

Anyway, queues are fun. THIS IS ENGLAND! (It is where we fiddle with bits of change which we drip for future historians and archeologists to find and try and work out what we were doing).

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

FAP in the Bloomsbury one!! every night!!

chris (chris), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

now look, this is meant to be about NORTH LONDON and N19 in particular, shoo shoo, you other people ;)

how about we do the 12th and then have another one when pete gets back? we need to show these south london types how to get organised innit :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Count me in for porch-sized pizza on the 12th!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

12th should be good for me, he says from the depths of southernmost N7.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i actually miss la porchetta when i'm in new york. maybe i'm just exoticizing british pizza, who knows.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Has charltonlido returned from his sojourn?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

yes I had texts from him today, he wants to go to ikea

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Pffft

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, I doubt their pizza's very good

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

is Upper Holloway the new Dunedin?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i am back in brown

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay what time?? 7?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

did I miss some posts?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't move the mouse FOR you, Ed

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

aha!

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

the title of this thread sticks in my mind and comes up at weird times, like when i'm shaving for example - but i don't know why

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

http://bitchcakes.topcities.com/images/maryeli.jpg

I found that picture link by searching for "yancey disco panties."

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

!!!!!!!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i know, i know

so LA PORCHETTA, at 7pm, if i haven't scared u all off with that horrible picture? Carsmile Steve we haven't heard from you sir

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

In japanese no less

(oh and EEEK!!!!!!!)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure i can make La Porchetta but can meet people in the Swimmer later on?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

swimmer for me also, i think

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, yeah, Carsmile said this wasn't happened on Sunday (unless I got very confused) so I've made other (work) plans. I might pop into the Swimmer later though.

Ricardo (RickyT), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

eh? wha? who?

sorry, i'd kind of semi-forgotten about this...

i also am not overly bothered about food, but would go a beer or two in the swimmer. i'm a bit tired after slogging over to aldershot last night...

x-post, don't blame me ricardo ;P

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

actually that match report is rubbish, i thought it was jeannin who caused the own goal, and sheldon didn't come close to anything that i saw...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

this is a much better report of the match as far as i can see ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ack, forgot about this and will probably still be at work at 7.

But The Swimmer later sounds like an idea.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

what time swimmer?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, how long will it take me to eat one of Porchetta's pizza by myself?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i shall aim for the Swimmer at 8

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, 8 sounds good.

tracer it'll take you about 2 days, but they'll give you a box fro what you can't eat tonight ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I might come to this. How long will it take me to get to the Swimmer from Lewisham? Also, I don't think I've ever been this far north in my life, and will I get a nosebleed?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

That or motion sickness. The world turns at a different speed this far north, you know.

cis (cis), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

what is this lewish ham of which you speak? i don't know where you'd be starting from but i'd suggest using the tfl journey planner to get to N7 6AR.

Sounds lovely! Is anyone suffering ruin? Steve I imagine you are getting immune to ruin!

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 13 November 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

no ruin, just slight guilt because i didn't get round to buying a round.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 November 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i am not becoming immune to the ruin...

...i've been relatively sedate in my drinking since sunday though, despite being out lots, the 8 o'clock start last night certainly helped.

lovely lovely QNI tonight though :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh man, I wish I'd bothered to look at this as I fancy a trip to the Swimmers no end!

Although even if I HAD there was no chance I could have made it last night, viz RUIN.

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm up for a gathering at the Swimmers at least one night every week

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

seconded! last night was fun! You know gareth's back in town when we spend an hour discussing counterintuitive street names.

Oh and BUKKAKE BARBIE.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Thirded. The Swimmers is def. an ace pub.

cis (cis), Thursday, 13 November 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If need be I could always put on a cheerleaders costume and happily cheer you on from the bar as I drink NINE MILLION PINTS OF THAT GORGEOUS BEER!

Sarah (starry), Thursday, 13 November 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll def come for the quiz, can divide into teams if there are many attendees innit

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

That does not sound very massive.

I feel sad about missing a fap on the 12th November 2003. Am I the sadness or what.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

N_RQ, Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:41 (twenty years ago)

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

N_RQ, Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

Paranoid Spice (kate), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

I live just off Muswell Hill Broadway which (I think) is the highest bit of MH, so yeah pretty high up.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 6 October 2005 10:52 (twenty years ago)

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

eh?! Stow only seems to be full of vegans when they have the green fayre once a year in Lloyd park. That's the only time I catch a whiff of their patchouli oil

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

oh hang on i read 'stow' as 'stokey', where is 'stow'? 'on the trent', was my slightly muddled first answer.

N_RQ, Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Thursday, 6 October 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

The arrow on her top is a crucial part of the composition of the photo, so she had to sit there through the whole 4-hour shoot. It was murder (and Ken is now 16 stone).

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Eating a Crystals with a fork? I've never heard of such madness.

Haha, getting chilli and garlic sauce down your front is a crucial part of the experience.

but you know i'm a bus man. are the buses bad, too?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

They go through a lot of pinch points, it takes a fair while to get anywhere.

Ed (dali), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:14 (nineteen years ago)

Here's the Stoke Newington Spider. Everything has to go through Dalston or the Angel.

You'd be better off in Hackney or Clapton.

Ed (dali), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

i like clapton! i've only spent about two hours there, but they were a fine two hours.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

it's cool. next time you're in town i'll show you the ropes - well, police lines.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

i like stoke newington.

i had a monstrously great night at bowdens bar there last summer

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

was around there earlier food shopping but never been out drinking round there.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

dunno that we were drinking really, either

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

im gonna rep for stokey too

its great for buses in a way - can get buses to most major train stations, despite length of journey.

Clicia is dead nice, clissold park is sweet

not even a good kebab for you?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

ha, well, i had to get off the bus early tonite, as the police had cordoned off holloway road, due to...

...a burnt out car

what is it with the police, and overreaction, in leafy N7?

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 1 May 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

where was this car? i wish i'd seen this.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 1 May 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 1 May 2006 22:11 (nineteen years ago)

I knew I shouldn't have set fire`to that car. Seemed like a laugh at the time. I'm all for bigging up Newington Green / Clossold Park too. Good friends live there and it is the non-descript side of nice.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 1 May 2006 22:18 (nineteen years ago)

Clissold park is the best London park for Conkers, as kids we used to fill sacks with them there.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:34 (nineteen years ago)

Clissold Park now better known for not being a good place to walk in the morning if you're female and on the small side. Also these days you are reliant on bendy buses to get to it, which is meh.

I can imagine that the small children who collect conkers NOW have found a way to incorporate it into their happy-slapping routines. OH YAY.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 06:55 (nineteen years ago)

you can get to clissold park from 106 from finsbury park which i dont think is bendy (at least last time i went)! :D

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 07:22 (nineteen years ago)

If you are at Finsbury Park already you might as well *walk* to Clissold Park from there.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 07:32 (nineteen years ago)

there are deer in clissold park!

(apparently)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

Definite deer in Victoria Park, also beloved of early-AM female joggers.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 07:41 (nineteen years ago)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 08:05 (nineteen years ago)

Who'd have thought there was a whole two-year-old thread about Holloway? Some points:

1) I got fairly brutally mugged in Upper Holloway. 3 very young fellas all puching me in the head and kicking me as I fell to the ground. To my credit I had the werewithal to say 'If you'll just stop hitting me, I'll give you some bloody money' as I went down. Fortunately got rescued by some very posh, very drunk rugby players who were having a party.

2) There's a big Chinese restaurant in lower Holloway that used to advertise 'Chinese Elvis' nights. We went once and there was a very English Elvis impersonator. We asked what had happened to Chinese Elvis, and the proprietor said that he'd sacked him as he was rubbish. "This one much better!"

3) Has anyone ever been to anything at the Rocket? They used to alternate between awful-looking trance nights and the Jah Shaka soundsystem. I always wanted to go to that, but never found anyone who was into it. Is it still open? What do they have on?

4) For a road with like a hundred pubs, I've never really found a good one actually on Holloway Road. Apart from the Coronet, which I used as a living room one cold, cold, central heating-less winter. My mates band are named after the coronet, actually.

Ramble,ramble

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly Stockholm sydrome has set in re: the Coronet.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

[googles 'stockholm syndrome']

Ha ha! Totally. I grew to love the old men stinking of piss.

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

... then one day, you stink of piss

You'll Never Put a Better Bit of Butter On Your Knife (Dada), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

The Swimmer, just off Holloway Road (on Hercules Rd) is a great pub. Little and Big Red are okay (though Lil is better). Beyond that it can be a bit touch and go for pubs. The Head had a brief period of greatness when it used to show Big Brother every night, but since then has become a bit fighty.

I saw Chinese Elvis. He was rubbish.

As for the Rocket - I don't go out of solidarity to the banning of UNL students union. Considering the place has been London Met University for five years I really should let that go.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

The St John's Tavern, further up towards Archway, is a decent boozer, if admittedly leaning a little towards the gastropubby side.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

I've been in that one. A bit posh for the likes of me.

You'll Never Put a Better Bit of Butter On Your Knife (Dada), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:25 (nineteen years ago)

Also St John's is not on the Holloway Road.

READ THE QUESTION MATT DC! OR I WILL REVEAL EMBARRESSING FACTS ABOUT YOU.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah it is posh. (and on junction road) And the head is always full of the wrong kind of nutter, the times I've been there. I might go to the Swimmer, though.

My favourite pub in London is the Faltering Fullback, just up the road in Finsbury Park (just off Stroud Green Road).

Jamie T Smith (Jamie T Smith), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

The FF is a nice pub, though i always seeme to end up in the cavernous back room which is my least favourite bit of the pub.

Oh, also Bailey's Corner near the bottom of Holloway Road is a nice pub with a very lucrative pub quiz on a Monday.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

I've only been once, I remembered it being on Holloway Road itself and failed to consult the fancyapint oracle.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

The Swimmer is nice. Where is the Head? Must check out this Faltering Fullback! I love pubs.

You'll Never Put a Better Bit of Butter On Your Knife (Dada), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, right the Nag's Head - that looks too scuzzy for the likes of me

You'll Never Put a Better Bit of Butter On Your Knife (Dada), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:44 (nineteen years ago)

It has lovely fixed banquettes in the back of the room, but the red paint and the recently acquired roughish punters make it a tough sell admittedly. Still, there are a lot, lot worse of HR (The Quays, The Holloway, Spoofers, any pub named after Angie).

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'll give it a go! What's that one just along from The Swimmer? On corner of HR and Hercules Street?

You'll Never Put a Better Bit of Butter On Your Knife (Dada), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

It's the Hercules of course! Not very good.

You'll Never Put a Better Bit of Butter On Your Knife (Dada), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

No, that The Hercules, and that is even rougher (and joyless). At least The HEad has a bit of zing. The Head is next door to Argos. It may have lost a lette rand just reprezent as The Hed.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

lil red and the bailey are both not upper holloway really

big red maybe..

"the head" doesn't exist. i think you are thinking of "he head" which used to be really nice with sofas and darts and smokes. haven't been for a while.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

x-post: Thank fuck for that. Mind you Metro don't sound much better.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

is "the study" a pub? i always go past it on the bus and the outside looks like the most boring place in the whole world.

Just in case any of you in the Holloway Area just happened to see anything... this is an appeal for a friend of a friend. :-(

I've been asked to pass this on - it's a police appeal for
information. Billy (singer from Les Incompetents) was assaulted last
week and hurt very badly. He's had brain surgery but his condition is
said to be life-threatening. There have been no arrests as yet. So
please, if you were out and about in Camden / Islington or on the 29
bus last Thursday and saw anything, please get in touch.
______________________________________

Police are appealing for witnesses and information to a serious assault in Islington.

We were called at approx 23:00 on 22/6/06 to reports of a man having
been assaulted as he got off a No.29 bus in Camden Road, Islington.

The victim, aged 19 alighted the bus in Camden Rd, near Brecknock Rd,
N7. The suspect got off at the same stop and assaulted the victim.

LAS attended and the victim was taken to a central London hospital, suffering from head injuries. His condition is described as life threatening.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged approx 28 yrs, with dark hair and possibly an Australian accent. He was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

DS Sean Smyth from Islington CID said;

"The suspect and victim are believed to have exchanged words on the bus before the assault took place and I am appealing for information from anyone who was on the 29 bus just before 23.00 on the 22/06/06.

"I am also appealing for anyone who witnessed the assault in Camden Rd, near Brecknock Road to come forward. Witnesses reported having seen the suspect laughing as he headed north towards the Holloway Road after the attack.

"If it helps to jog people's memories the assault took place the night
Australia beat Croatia in the World Cup."

No arrests. Inquiries continue.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the CID at Islington on 020 7421 0350 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Not so much the upper, but yes.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 06:16 (nineteen years ago)

when i first moved to London 10 yrs ago I lived near Nag's Head and then moved up the road to near Whittington Park where I have lived ever since. I like it a lot despite the general unpleasantness of Ho'way Rd - but there is now a fancy french bakery/pattisserie that does nummy cakes! gentrification! woo hoo!

Mark Co (Markco), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

Having now looked at the thread a bit I would like to reprasent for the Crown on Holloway Rd! OK it is a bog standard, shabby old man/irish pub but it is totally inoffensive, there is very very good guinness, it is a nice place to watch footy or gaelic footy in a laid back way without fearing for life if Arsenal are losing (hello Angies) and also if you go at 6 pm on sunday you get free sandwiches and mini porkpies!! the jukebox is v eccentric too - ranging from irish kitsch, country to classic soft rock and indie

no, hilmarton isnt standing in for just upper holloway, but kind of all of holloway. or, at least, around tube station/nagshead

ie, there is no holloway, of any description, on the foxtons map

Archway also known as Upper Holloway
Nag's Head
Lower Holloway

it is centred on hilmarton road, n7

go to p. 3 to get some history on this:

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2000/uksi_20000784_en.pdf

some lunatic councillor wanted the area to be called "hillmarton with holloway" or something.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 8 January 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

Hillmarton is a conservation area, i think (and there are two ls, yes).

And Hillmarton Tandoori, on Hillmarton Road is officially the best indian take away in the uk (voted by Red Bull Dozers). And MSS and son store, two doors down, features the most polite and friendly shopkeeper in the whole world.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

presumably the "conservation area" only covers the parts where there are like, plenty of trees. or else their conseration efforts are in vain?

i think there were some problems with a tree outside our flat actually, because it's protected or listed or something, but they somehow agreed that it can be chopped down for some reason after it turned out that the entire house was being pulled apart by its roots.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

the hercules is alright! sometimes the swimmer clientele get on my nerves, cheesy chips regardless.

i too wz unaware of STRIP PUBS! having said that tho, recently i summoned the courage to pop my head thru the door of a blacked out boozer in ladbroke grove (the one opposite sainsburys on the roundabout) looking for anywhere showing city vs united; what i saw there was quite a tidy neighbourhood gaff with WHITE WALLS absolutely filled with people (regular folk too, no ponces) even tho it had just gone 12pm! who all snapped their heads towards me as soon as i opened the door. and no footer there either. it was very strange, tho i've probably made it weirder in my head since.

tsk. (mwah), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes the swimmer clientele get on my nerves

have they been accidentally treading on your silk scarf? ;)

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

(haha the most shameful part of it all was me fakely putting my mobile to my ear as i entered as if to give the impression i had some social business there shortly)

tsk. (mwah), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

actually i have to hand it to the swimmer re scarves cos i left one there once and they kept it for me. (well not For Me, but they kept it.) it wasnt silken but er i'd probly have nicked it if it was me.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

wrapping a scarf around yr ears would also require some gall, i imagine.

tsk. (mwah), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

i practiced that in France last week where i believe such behaviour is more tolerated nay encouraged.

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

i thought everyone did the fakephone to ear thing. i have mine on silent most of time also, so dont get caught out by unexpected call when already 'on phone'

Storefront Church (688), Monday, 8 January 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

i guess that is better than just sort of studying "settings" "messages" "shortcuts" etc. because does any kind of busy, socially-connected person like the one i am pretending to be actually have time to lazily study a genuine text message?

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Monday, 8 January 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

i much prefer to be texted than called, unless it's important. screw you, mobile companies, with your 'togetherness'!

reverto levidensis (blueski), Monday, 8 January 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

people who are ashamed to live in holloway should be driven out at gunpoint and then pointed/laughed at when they discover that they can't afford to live in Highbury/Barnsbury/Dartmouth Park etc.

Mark Co (Markco), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

all of these places are v. close together and you can't really say there're any massive price differences between them. perhaps the poshest place in barnsbury is pricier than the poshest in holloway. perhaps there is a scalpel that can literally split hairs.

the original hauntology blogging crew (Enrique), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I was thinking of all holloways for cheapness, not just Hillmarton Zone

(yes, 8 is right)

Mark Co (Markco), Monday, 8 January 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Holloway is more expensive than Finsbury/Highbury, surely.

not for food

n7 has iceland and morrisons = cheaper than:
n19 that has co-op and sainsbury's local = more expensive

vita susicivus (blueski), Monday, 15 January 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

No, when I started my thread, it was more along the lines of WTF IS GOING ON?!?!? ARGH!!! IS IT SAFE TO LEAVE THE HOUSE?!?!? (Or office, as the case may be, as Emsk and I were trapped in her office by the crazy police stuff.)

I've just had a flyer through the door for the Red Rose Tandoori.

Seems like it's now endorsed by The Darkness! The flyer has not one but two photos of the band, along with Ann Widdecombe and Anthony Worrel Thompson.

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

Ann Widdecombe on vocals and Anthony Worrel Thompson on drums?

snoball, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

Interesting proposition, but it seems like I missed out 'photos of' between 'with' and 'Ann' in that sentence.

I believe in a thing called naan.

Daniel Giraffe, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 09:06 (eighteen years ago)

The Darkness have been on their flyers since I've lived around here, and that's nearly 3 years ago. They might have to get a new band endorsement. Jeremy Corbyn says it's his favourite restaurant too. I've been disappointed the last couple of times I've ordered from there, which is a shame.

Bocken Social Scene, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

those are some of the worst endorsements ever.
