When can we have another Chicago FAP?

I'm getting envious of all these NYC get-togethers. I want to have a huge, all-out Chicago FAP sometime soon -- an all-night extravaganza that consists of more than Kenan and I getting a six-pack and watching HBO, okay? That means that the following people are invited: Kenan Hebert, Brian Nemtusak, Ann Sterzinger, Mr. Diamond, Oops, JuliaA, Sarah Pedal, Melissa W, Todd Swiss, and whomever else I've forgotten. What do you all think? Should we just wait until the inevitable "Welcome NA and Sarah McLusky" bash in January?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:52 (twenty years ago) link

Also, Nicolars and JD Salmon and Aaron W should drive in from Michigan, and Tep from Indiana, and Haikunym and Kirsten from Wisconsin for some TRI-STATE LOVIN'.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:58 (twenty years ago) link

I might be around that way for the holidays, but I'm guessing there won't really be any FAPs right then...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

We might be able to convince some people from outlying areas to make the trip...Tep had mentioned possibly coming from from Bloomington at some point, but he might want to wait until a little later in the new year.

With our current plan, I will be up for the first week of December to look at apartments, though Sarah won't be with me. I could probably do a meet-and-greet one of those evenings. Then we'll be up permanently in the new year.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 7 November 2003 16:59 (twenty years ago) link

I could maybe come too.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe me and Tep can have a little Indiana mini-FAP! At the vegan cafe in Bloomington!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

Where are you, Teeny? I keep forgetting...

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

i'll be in chi-town for a week or so around thanksgiving if anyone wants to get some harold's chicken shack or superdawg or lou malnatis with me.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

I'm in the mysterious midwest.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:05 (twenty years ago) link

I might even be in Chicago the first week of December, holy shit!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:05 (twenty years ago) link

(I don't like to say on the board, but will say in chat.)

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:06 (twenty years ago) link

I'm not allowed to take vacation until Dec 11 but weekends might be fair game.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:06 (twenty years ago) link

Nick, what are you coming here for??

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:08 (twenty years ago) link

balls-out rocking, no doubt.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:09 (twenty years ago) link

what a terrible thought

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:17 (twenty years ago) link

If nickalicious is in Chicago the first week of December, I might just have to quit this job sooner! :)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:21 (twenty years ago) link

I will be in town
next weekend, available
only Thursday night.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:25 (twenty years ago) link

Cuz I haven't had a vacation in ages and my friend wants me to come up and stay there for a few days, that's it. I'm still not sure I'll be able to afford it though.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:34 (twenty years ago) link

I think it's funny that the only people who have responded so far don't actually live here. Hmmm, well if there's one thing I've learned from the NYC FAP threads, it's that there needs to be some sort of definite plan. But I guess I'm still just gauging interest at this point. I will say, though, that if you come, Nickalicious, then a party is definitely ON.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry jaymc, I'm really not up to travelling at the moment -- maybe some other time.

Nicolars (Nicole), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:43 (twenty years ago) link

That's cool, Nicole. I'm just in the mood for a big party and wanted to corral as many people as I could.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

big FAP: I might go.
Thursday night I'm up for sum'n.
after that...the moon....

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:49 (twenty years ago) link

I might not be able to go, which really sucks because I'd love to meet you guys.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

I k-wish I hadnae said anything now cuz I'm not too for sure as I'm still not sure I'll be able to afford the trip, but hey whatev.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 7 November 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

Ever, JuliaA?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:01 (twenty years ago) link

Haikunym, unfortunately I've already got plans for next Thurs. :(

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

dag nabbit

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

anyone? night of fun?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:06 (twenty years ago) link

If anything does transpire, Haikunym, I could show up by 11 pm. But that seems kinda late to start something.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:08 (twenty years ago) link

yeah I have to work
Friday morning right at 9
well, that's okay. (sniff.)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:09 (twenty years ago) link

I hope I'll be able to come to an FAP at some point, Jay, but probably not anytime soon, unfortunately. :(

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 7 November 2003 18:12 (twenty years ago) link

well, i am 21 now. awesome. um, sometime in the thanksgiving week would be cool, or like the weekend before or after. sometime in late december or early jan would be good for me too

todd swiss (eliti), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:13 (twenty years ago) link

Todd, I want to talk to you about All the Real Girls sometime!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 21:55 (twenty years ago) link

Me too!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:00 (twenty years ago) link

But me first!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:01 (twenty years ago) link

i want to talk to anyone and everyone about all the real girls sometime.

todd swiss (eliti), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:46 (twenty years ago) link

Everytime I've tried to make it to one of these, the fates have conspired against me (catastrophic flooding, etc.). I would really like to come to something sometime. However, unlike Todd, I am not yet 21.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Friday, 7 November 2003 22:56 (twenty years ago) link

"etc."

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 November 2003 23:12 (twenty years ago) link

I have also fucked up every fap I've ever tried to participate in, so I've probably screwed everything up by simply being on this thread.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 7 November 2003 23:24 (twenty years ago) link

i will mail one of the amateurist action figures to jaymc so i can be present at the fap in my own fashion

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 8 November 2003 13:33 (twenty years ago) link

ok, lets not forget about this, who wants to set something up?

todd swiss (eliti), Monday, 10 November 2003 06:47 (twenty years ago) link

Do it at Mac's on Division, because they love me there and would let me in fo' sho'.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 10 November 2003 07:18 (twenty years ago) link

But seriously folks, I'm down for it if I can get in, wherever it be.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 10 November 2003 07:19 (twenty years ago) link

Y'all should have a return-of-Nabisco FAP sometime around some holiday or other!

not nabiscothingy, obviously, he doesn't even post anymore, Monday, 10 November 2003 07:20 (twenty years ago) link

I hearby declare that we should also make it a dance party. Now who's got some decks?

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 10 November 2003 10:11 (twenty years ago) link

Are people interested in a Thanksgiving weekend thing? Nabisco, when will you be around?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:52 (twenty years ago) link

(reiterating:
folx are needed Thursday night
for wildish revels)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:57 (twenty years ago) link

I will be in town from Sunday, Nov. 30th to Saturday, Dec. 6th, though I may end up leaving early if I find an apartment early.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 10 November 2003 14:58 (twenty years ago) link

the fri-sat-sun of t'giving weekend is possible for me I think.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 November 2003 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

I just sent mr teeny nabisco's epic buffy post to try to convince him that we should do this trip. :)

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 November 2003 15:32 (twenty years ago) link

Except he's not in Chicago anymore? Or did I miss a post of temporary return?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 10 November 2003 15:42 (twenty years ago) link

read above, a return trip is possible for holidays, and if that gets mr teeny to buy into a trip then hey who am I to argue?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 November 2003 15:53 (twenty years ago) link

dare I suggest...?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 10 November 2003 22:22 (twenty years ago) link

I'll be finally seeing my relatives in Wisconsin for Thanksgiving... pretty crushed for time in general but in theory this sounds like fun...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Monday, 10 November 2003 22:53 (twenty years ago) link

sterzinger: where in wisconsin?

Wisconsonym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 01:19 (twenty years ago) link

Teeny, I don't know if you're serious about Brett Michaels (!), but that's the day we're shooting for (and I think it's a good suggestion), there's also King Kong at the Empty Bottle.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 03:04 (twenty years ago) link

Sarah, isn't Mac's a restaurant? Or is it a bar? Or both?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 03:05 (twenty years ago) link

"sterzinger: where in wisconsin?
-- Wisconsonym (zinogu...), November 11th, 2003."

Colby, Marshfield, WI Rapids area (they're all from the Wood County area)

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 03:26 (twenty years ago) link

okay ann just asking,
let me know if you pass through
madison bubble

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 11 November 2003 04:15 (twenty years ago) link

after teasing all the LA ILXors on that thread, it now looks like I will be Chicago/Indiana way Nov 27-30th.
prob not the best time for a FAP, but I thought I should mention it...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 16 November 2003 20:55 (twenty years ago) link

ok thanksgiving weekend is looking much less likely; I should have known better, november is ALWAYS wretched for me.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 16 November 2003 21:32 (twenty years ago) link

jaymc--I think it's both. It definitely has a bar, anyhow.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 16 November 2003 23:39 (twenty years ago) link

Adam, I'd still like to FAP on that weekend!

Too bad you can't make it, Teeny :(

...but I think others of us can. I'd still like to know if Nabisco will be around at all. If anyone has his address, please e-mail me.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 02:19 (twenty years ago) link

i am up for FAP action on either/both weekends! am i just repeating myself?

todd swiss (eliti), Monday, 17 November 2003 04:27 (twenty years ago) link

No, I hear you, Todd!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 04:50 (twenty years ago) link

I feel like I should be more responsible about this thread and whatever FAPs that may happen as a result. Hmmm.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 04:54 (twenty years ago) link

I will come if oops turns up with an eyepatch on.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:07 (twenty years ago) link

And sings us a song.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:08 (twenty years ago) link

But I'm guessing his non-presence on this thread pretty much speaks for itself.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:08 (twenty years ago) link

And:

I'm thinking of coming to the Bay Area in the first half of December, maybe.

-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), November 4th, 2003.

Well?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:10 (twenty years ago) link

At this point, Adam, I don't think it's going to happen in December. But maybe early in 2004 some time? Point being, I have vacation days I need to use up at work by the end of March, and I've always wanted to visit the Bay Area. (I also have a couple friends from college there.) So it will likely happen, I just don't know when.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:18 (twenty years ago) link

As far as I know, Oops hasn't been to any FAPs. Maybe because he's marooned in the suburbs? Where's Kenan on this thread, though?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:19 (twenty years ago) link

I think Oops fears being hunted down for his radical views, just like every great poet before him.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 05:23 (twenty years ago) link

So, to reiterate, I will definitely be in town from Nov. 30th (Sat) to December 6th (Sat), and I should be pretty free in the evenings. Even if we can't have a full FAP, if anyone wants to get together for a dinner or a couple of beers, I'm down for whatever. If you want my cell phone no., email me at naamme @ yahoo.com.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 14:21 (twenty years ago) link

I have no money and no ID (got a ticket and, um, sorta threw away my copy of it) at the moment and will be babysitting my cousins the around Thanksgiving, so now isn't too good of a time.
adam, I'll hopefully be in SF early next year, probably beginning of Feb. Don't know how much free time I'll have but I'd love to meet ya.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:36 (twenty years ago) link

Man, this ID thing is a real pisser, ain't it? America is a funny place.

SFAP it is, then.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:38 (twenty years ago) link

I've tried ordering beer at restaurants twice since I've been without ID. Both times I was with my family and at chain restaurants. First time I was rather meek: "can I please have a beer? i don't have ID, but my mommy can vouch for me. pleeease?" No dice. Second time, a lil more bold: "you don't really need to card me, do ya? come on." He asked for my birthdate, I responded without thinking about it, and got my friggin Guinness!

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:45 (twenty years ago) link

I was hanging out with my friend Jason and his indie-pixie girlfriend a few weeks ago, and it was 3 am, and we were trying to catch the end of Richie Hawtin's DJ set at Vision, except indie-pixie girlfriend couldn't find her ID. "Pleeeeease," she cried. "Dude," the bouncer said, "you look like you're 17." Needless to say, we didn't get in. She was very heartbroken and sniffly the whole ride home. AMERICA, YOU JUST MADE AN ART-SCHOOL STUDENT CRY.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:53 (twenty years ago) link

if that were the final judge of nations then we'd all be doomed

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:55 (twenty years ago) link

I <3 indie-pixie girls.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

That's a heart, not a cock and balls.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

Jesus, I hope it's a heart, cuz that's a pretty fucked-up cock, otherwise.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:57 (twenty years ago) link

its called "sublimation"

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

x-post

amateur!st (amateurist), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

(Back on topic, Adam, when during the weekend will you actually be in Chicago? Sat. night?)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:58 (twenty years ago) link

it look like Nov.23 until Dec.2, I'll be in Chicago.. except fri, sat, sun after Thanksgiving, i'll be in milwaukee, seducing RJG's girlfriend.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:00 (twenty years ago) link

And NA, are you leaving Chicago during the day on the 6th? Because my band is playing a record-release show that night.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:00 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know yet, jaymc. I am still trying to get a flight! But..I guess Friday or Saturday night looks like being the best bet- bear in mind that if I do come, it probably won't be a late one for me as I will most likely be getting the South Shore line (from Randolph St) back into Indiana.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

In fact, I might only be there afternoon/early evening on one of those days if the train schedules have their evil way with me...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:03 (twenty years ago) link

Yup, I'll be leaving midafternoon on the 6th, sorry.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:09 (twenty years ago) link

where are some possible places to meet up? are there people who are under 21 going? i dont want to suggest anything really because i dont live in the city and dont know the best places. any suggestions besides the bret michaels show? i dunno

todd swiss (eliti), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

The possibility of under-21s, like Sarah or Melissa, is what's making me not wanting to commit to anything just yet. If all we wanted to do was go to a bar and drink the night away, I could suggest a few in Andersonville (where Kenan and I live), like Hopleaf or Leadway. If we felt like something more structured, like a show, I could still be interested in King Kong at the Empty Bottle (on the 29th), and in that case, we could meet up at, say, the California Clipper (four blocks west) beforehand.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

I am very bad at finding my way around Chicago, but don't let that effect your plans! (just expect me late and out of breath)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:20 (twenty years ago) link

chicago is easy to navigate! the block numbers are on all the street signs at major intersections, so you only have to pass two to know if you're going north or south (or east or west). Nahmean? Like if you past 3200N then the next light you come to is 3600N...

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

I'm wondering if we do something on the 29th, it might be best to meet early at a non-drinky kind of place, and then migrate to a drinky place later?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:30 (twenty years ago) link

Or a place like Caffe deLuca in Bucktown, an Italian coffee shop that also has a beer menu.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:31 (twenty years ago) link

It all sounds good.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:33 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah I realize I'm just thinking to myself here. Unless someone comes on and says THAT'S A TERRIBLE IDEA!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:38 (twenty years ago) link

There are a few bars that won't card you, or at least won't care if you're under 21 and hanging out there. I used to go to Rotten Tuesdays at the Leadway every once in a while. I'm not sure how many other places are like this, however...

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:47 (twenty years ago) link

Waaaah! I cannot find a decently-priced flight for love nor money. My attendance at a potential Chi-FAP is in terrible jeopardy! :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:15 (twenty years ago) link

why you wait so long to buy ticket, silly man?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:23 (twenty years ago) link

Welcome to my life.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 05:24 (twenty years ago) link

Sarah, you know that Rotten Tuesdays no longer exist, right? On the other hand, Leadway usually only cards at the bar, even on weekends.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 06:58 (twenty years ago) link

ok, we should make some kind of decision. are we going to have two seperate FAPs? one on each weekend? i think this is a good idea since there will be different people at each from what i have read.

any opinions? its coming up soon!

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 08:07 (twenty years ago) link

Sarah, you know that Rotten Tuesdays no longer exist, right?

Yeah, they've moved to Hotti Biscotti on Fullerton.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 15:57 (twenty years ago) link

I am not going to make it, sorry. I hope to be back around christmas.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 21:57 (twenty years ago) link

you're at U of I, right Todd? What year are you? major? Where you livin at?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:01 (twenty years ago) link

Unfortunately, I can't do anything this weekend. I guess I should've made that clear earlier, except things sorta sneaked up on me. But next weekend I'm leaving totally free for FAP action.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:09 (twenty years ago) link

Just to summarize:

People who've expressed interest/availability in this weekend: Todd, Sarah, Phil.

People who've expressed interest/availability next weekend: Todd, Sarah, Jaymc. (And NA rolls into town on Sunday.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:16 (twenty years ago) link

right now i am a "junior" but i will be here for two more years after this one cause i am doing a double major in journalism and psychology. i may even stay the extra year and do the 12 month journalism masters program, but who knows. i am living at armory house, which is at second and armory, if you know where that is.

todd swiss (eliti), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:18 (twenty years ago) link

(Ann, Brian, and Kenan, where are you?)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:18 (twenty years ago) link

dude, i delivered for jimmy john's for 3 years---i know where EVERYTHING is. Fuckers at armory house would never show up at the door when i said i'd be there and would never respond to the buzzer.
I majored in psych and have been having a hard time finding a job, so GO TO GRAD SCHOOL. It's only 12 months, it'll be over before you know it.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:21 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, but then what?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:22 (twenty years ago) link

quiet you

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:24 (twenty years ago) link

I'll probably be at the BJM show at the Abbey if anyone is going this Friday.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 22:33 (twenty years ago) link

So is this happening, then?

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Thursday, 20 November 2003 03:44 (twenty years ago) link

people who were up for something last Thursday and got stone cold dissed by everyone: Haikunym. instead, I sat in my hotel room and watched the Trailblazers come back from a 24-point deficit to win it in OT. yeah baby.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Thursday, 20 November 2003 04:07 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry, Haikunym, but I had a hott date. You know how it is!

Chicago sucks.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 November 2003 06:16 (twenty years ago) link

I'm thinking about having a beer now. Should I, Chicago?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 November 2003 06:18 (twenty years ago) link

Chicago says yes!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 November 2003 06:32 (twenty years ago) link

I'll second that. Or by now, have another!

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 20 November 2003 06:49 (twenty years ago) link

Fuck it, enough being polite. I am going to strongarm y'all into coming to meet me sometime while I am there. I am going to do detective work, find out all your real names, look you up in the phone book, and show up at your front door with a keg of beer and some dudes I met at the comic book store. I am going to take photographs of your underwear drawer and post them on ILX. I'm going to TP your tool shed. If you want to avoid the chaos, email me and set up a date and time. You have been warned.

Dude, I never said I didn't want to meet you! Best days for me that week: Sunday, Monday, Thursday.

So as far as I'm concerned, next Saturday the 29th is a go. I just hung out with Kenan last night; he says he doesn't check ILE anymore but is definitely interested in hanging out. If it's no more or less convenient for anyone, I'm going to suggest the California Clipper, because a) I like that place and don't go there often enough, and b) if anyone's interested in maybe seeing King Kong, we'd be four blocks away from the Empty Bottle.

Dan Clowes: "When I close my eyes, I still see Chicago".

I am still looking at being up on the 27th, FAP or no. I intend to walk around all (or some) the bits that I haven't seen before. Where can "old Chicago" be found, adequately represented? Where can I get good, cheap food free of gluten or dairy?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

I don't know but Sarah and I will be getting there on the 29th if all is according to plan. Will you still be there then? Will you have a cell phone? If you will, email the no. to me. If you want. Whatever.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:59 (twenty years ago) link

:(

We fly back on the 29th.

BUT I'm there a few times each year, so no doubt I'll be able to FAP with you guys soon.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 21:00 (twenty years ago) link

What do you mean by "Old Chicago" and is gluten only found in wheat? Lots of cheap vegetarian food found up on Devon, in the Indian neighborhood.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:35 (twenty years ago) link

What do you understand by "Old Chicago", Kerry? Whatever your definition, I'd no doubt have some interest in it.

I don't know, gluten seems to be any many breaded things. I'm not vegetarian, I just have a weird stomach.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 December 2003 00:10 (twenty years ago) link

Adam, the 27th is still open for me to get together. Will find out for sure soon, this weekend probably.

Re gluten and dairy: Indian food is still a good recommendation, though, yeah? Devon St. does have quite a few good restaurants.

Re "Old Chicago": The first thing that comes to my mind (and I'm sure others who grew up in the Chicago suburbs; I think we talked about it on ILX once) is a long since demolished amusement park with this name in the town Oops and I grew up in. Next is a north side neighborhood called "Old Town," which is fairly tony (lots of old rich folks) but as such has a lot of nice, well preserved houses, if you just want to walk around the neighborhood. There are a lot of historical buildings and neat architecture on the south side, too, but I'm afraid I don't know much about the area (though I'm sure Kerry or Mr. Diamond or Hstencil could help you).

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 18 December 2003 05:58 (twenty years ago) link

All sounds great!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:55 (twenty years ago) link

Pilsen is really old - it has a really old world feel to it. I mean, old by midwest US standards. Chicago isn't all that old because so much of it burned down, and then a lot of the buildings that had been built in the following decades have been torn down.

But yeah, Old Town is pretty old but also very sanitized like parts of San Francisco.

Uptown was a rich people's playground in the 1920s and still has the feel of that era in some places - there are lots of examples of showy architecture from that period.

The south side still has mansions and historical districts here and there, but most of the robber baron mansions have been torn down. You might want to visit Prairie Avenue, though, if you haven't already, because the Glessner House is pretty interesting and you might learn something of "old Chicago" if you do a tour.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:07 (twenty years ago) link

These recommendations all sound great!

I will expand my already broad definition of "old Chicago" to include anywhere that would look good on grainy B&W Super 8 film! I'm thinking of bringing my camera up.

I have always meant to go to Pilsen. Also this aumusement park sounds very promising indeed.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:31 (twenty years ago) link

And on a practical note- it's currently about 60 in the Bay Area, and that's the lowest it's been for a while. Just how fucking cold am I going to be next week???

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:46 (twenty years ago) link

long since demolished amusement park

Today it's in the 20s, but next week is supposed to be not bad, around 40.

Where can I get a ridiculous steak, then?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 19 December 2003 00:38 (twenty years ago) link

Too bad Jilly's is closed. That's where Sinatra & friends used to hang out. I'm not a steak-eater, so maybe someone else can help you out. Everyone hypes Eli's & Gene & Georgetti's, but if you want to eat where the real proles eat, I'm sure it's somewhere else.

www.chireader.com

I'm sure all of the industrial crap on the south side looks really good in B & W - bridges and canals and things. Lots of bridges & whatnot. I think much of the south side is quite picturesque in a past-its-prime kind of way.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 19 December 2003 15:22 (twenty years ago) link

Jilly's is closed? When did that happen??

Best steak place is probably the Chicago Chop House. It's fairly understated (not overrun with Rush street drillrods like Gibsons), and it actually really is the best. Gene & georgetti's isn't so hot, but it is definitely "old Chicago".

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 19 December 2003 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

four months pass...
I know, I know, we just had my birthday party. But amateurist is back in town and we were discussing seeing The Saddest Music in the World, the new Guy Maddin film, which is playing at the Music Box. Anyone else up for it? I can't do Weds or Thurs, so it would probably end up being this weekend, unless people wanted to meet tomorrow. If we want to make it more of a FAP-y thing, we could go to a late show and eat dinner before, or go to an earlier show, then afterwords put on our smoking jackets, light up our pipes, swirl our brandy, and discuss our feelings about the state of Canadian cinema.

I told Nick about it the other night, Sarah. The Cure is headlining, and Interpol, Mogwai, and the Rapture are opening. There's also a second stage featuring a bunch of bands I don't care about. I've never seen the Cure before, but have enjoyed all of the openers in a live setting. I think Nick scoffed at all of them, though.

amateur!st (amateurist), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago) link

We can do whatever, but I still want to go to the movies. Jaymc, do you (and R.?) still want to go see this maybe tonight or tomorrow night? Argh, I hate organizing stuff.

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

OH, you love it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago) link

So, what is this Mudhoneyfest business? It's not a joke, is it? I love Mudhoney!

Sadly, I was joking. But wouldn't it be great?

*sigh*

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:42 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I think Renee said she wants to see a movie this weekend. We're both free tonight and tomorrow.

I also like the idea of Sunday brunch at Andie's! But of course I would, it's like four blocks away from me.

Amateurist, so where are you now? Back in Andersonville?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:44 (twenty years ago) link

You wanna do the movie tonight? I like the idea of doing something on Friday night for a change.
And what the fuck, Sunday brunch in Andersonville is fine too. It's a bit of a long haul, but what the hell. Oh but we're supposed to have band practice Sunday afternoon. Hmm...

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 21 May 2004 14:46 (twenty years ago) link

I would like to see "Saved!", yes. But I will be gone for the majority of this weekend.

You are all invited, of course, to my band's show on Monday night, at Subterranean. Although come early, because a certain influential Chicago rawk critic likes us now!

NA (Nick A.), Friday, 28 May 2004 13:44 (twenty years ago) link

I know it's a long way off, but as per above I booked my flight to Chicago, arriving August 12th. I'll be around for a day in the city, I guess. Then I'm off to this backwoods Indiana wedding.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago) link

There she is sitting there
Out behind the smoke-house in her rocking chair
She don't do nothin'
She don't say nothin'
She don't feel nothin'
She don't know nothin'
Maybe she's crazy, I don't know
But maybe that's why I love her so

Her papa was a midget
Her mama was a whore
Her grandad was a newsboy 'til he was eighty-four
Man don't you think I know she hates me
Man don't you think I know that she's no good
If she knew how she'd be unfaithful to me
I think she'd kill me if she could
Maybe she's crazy I don't know
But maybe that's why I love her so

I'm not afraid of the greywolf
Who stalks through our forest at dawn
As long as I have her beside me
I have the strength to carry on

Today we will be married
And all the freaks that she knows will be there
And all the people from the village will be there
To congratulate us
I will carry her across the threshold
I will make dim the light
I will attempt to spend my love within her
But though I try with all my might
She will laugh at my mighty sword
She will laugh at my mighty sword
Why must everybody laugh at my mighty sword?
Lord, hep me if you will
Maybe we're both crazy, I don't know
Maybe that's why I love her so

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 3 June 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago) link

do you think we could have some corporate sponsorship for these FAPs? we could call it the "i'm lovin' it FAP" and meet up at mcdonald's, then use the endorsement money to buy whiskey sours.

amateur!!st, Thursday, 9 September 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

I've only been to Club Foot once, but we're trying to make it a band tradition to go there after practice if we can. It's a fun place.

But seriously, folks, where should I have my birthday party? In the apartment? In the backyard of said apartment? Or at good ol' Club Foot?

Also, how about you guys all pay to come see us a play for a FAP sometime? ha ha

Obviously we need to have one amateurist/Sarah McLusky party (first weekend in Oct. should work well) and then a Kenan/Todd Swiss party and see who wins best birthday party. Or we could set up a tournament system, with a winner from amateurist vs. McLusky and one from Kenan vs. Todd Swiss and then another party where the two winners battle for best party and the ultimate winner is Mr./Ms. Birthday Party Chicago 2004!!! Or maybe I'm overthinking this.

Tonight at ten (kenan), Saturday, 18 September 2004 04:36 (twenty years ago) link

Yes, I like this afternoon BBQ idea.

Though, consider this. We do it Saturday afternoon instead of Sunday afternoon. This way, it's Am's b-day, but early on. We have some beers, we eat, maybe we give him a gift, and then we send him on his way, gently and with much bonhomie. Then the rest of us continue eating and drinking as per usual. That way Amateurist gets to hang out with us on his b-day, but we aren't doomed to cut short an afternoon good time for fear of work the next day.

How 'bout it?

Yeah, it's Six Flags Great America. It is expensive, but you can get a discount by bringing a pepsi (?) can or something in - with that, it's like $26.

i dunno. its been a couple years since i last went. when that raging bull ride was just put in. its scary.
-- phil-two (philtw...), September 18th, 2004.

I went earlier this summer. Raging Bull is one of the best rides, but if you think that's scary, don't ride Deja Vu. When I was in line for that one, they had to stop it twice - once because someone passed out, and once because someone vomited. It's great if you like having the shit scared out of you (I do). Superman is really wonderful, it's like you're flying and it's not 'scary' at all.

If you have a bathtub in the new place, you should take a long hot bath with some bath salts and candles.

So, what's up with my birthday party? Can everyone do Kenan's idea - Saturday afternoon? October 2nd?

Do that six flags thing some other time without me. I hate roller coasters and don't want to be the person who holds coats and stands with my arms crossed being a total killjoy.

We (ie: Nick, his parents, and I) were at Victory's Banner Saturday morning. mmm... Also, we went to Hyde park, but we didn't really know what to see. Powell's was neat though.

Sarah is buggin' me to finalize this birthday party thing, so am., do you want to do it Sat. afternoon or Sun. afternoon (the afternoon of the 2nd or the afternoon of the 3rd)? Is the plan to have it at our house?

If you have a bathtub in the new place

We do, and I can't tell you what a relief that is after living for a year with the filthy shower stall with rotting baseboards. You know what else we have? Windows. Windows that it's possible to pull a breeze through. And wood floors. And a real kitchen.

We had supressed thoughts of how bad our last apartment was as a means of coping. Now that we're out of it, GOD does it seem like a shithole.

("seem like")

Tonight at ten (kenan), Monday, 20 September 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago) link

oh wire the magazine? i am so dumb. maybe i will see the ghost/xiu xiu thing. when are the FF playing? i will try to make one of your shows.

amateur!!st, Monday, 20 September 2004 15:00 (twenty years ago) link

I'm going to see Joseph Arthur at the Double Door tonight for ten bucks, if anyone's interested.

Tonight at ten (kenan), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago) link

I feel like I'm constantly self-promoting, but FF are playing Weds. at Beat Kitchen and Sun. at Bottom Lounge. If you could make either, we would appreciate if people come to the Beat Kitchen show since the booking guy is nervous about there being enough audience. But we would be happy to see any of you at any of our shows.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago) link

You understand why Matt's nervous, right?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:05 (twenty years ago) link

Well, yeah, because he's new at being the booking guy there and he needs to make the club money if they're going to have more rock shows. But also I think it's weird for him to make us the headlining band if he's worried about draw, we've volunteered a few times to let one of the other (more popular) bands headline. But we're trying to get everyone to come out to the big rock'n'roll show, so I think hopefully everyone will be happy in the end.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago) link

I don't want to come across as ungrateful. We're excited about the show and happy to play. Just a little nervous about meeting expectations. This is only our second show!

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:10 (twenty years ago) link

Well, I think it's mostly because you guys are playing on Sunday, too, so he's worried that the audience will be split. I agree with you that it's weird that you're headlining, but I also know from experience that clubs in general (not just Matt/Beat Kitchen) tend to frown upon bands scheduling dates so close to one another. Just so ya know...

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago) link

That makes sense. It's hard for us to turn down shows, though, since we're basically trying to get any audience we can. I really would like to just be playing some house shows and parties and stuff like that, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of that going on in Chicago. Argh. I feel like Matt has this really heightened idea of how popular we are and how many people we can draw, and I'm not sure where he's getting it from, and I'm worried that he's going to end up being disappointed. I really just want to concentrate on playing a good show and not have to worry about all this other stuff.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:25 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think he has a heightened idea of how popular you are. In fact, that's why I think that he's worried, because he knows you're new to Chicago and your audience isn't that big -- but if going to the Sunday show is more convenient for some people, then that reduces a small number to an even smaller number. (Again, I'm not sure why you're headlining, though.)

I don't mean to stress you out or anything, and I feel weird that I'm caught in the middle of it, since Matt's my friend, but I wanted to make sure that you knew what the situation was.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:31 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, and I'm not mad at Matt or anything, I'm just a little confused by some of his decisions. But as I told him, we've been pretty much only been promoting this Beat Kitchen show (made and put up a bunch of fliers this weekend) and trying to get people to come to that instead of the Bottom Lounge show, so I think things will be ok in the end.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:37 (twenty years ago) link

Cool.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:39 (twenty years ago) link

Tonight at ten (kenan), Monday, 20 September 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks for the advice, Jaymc. I feel pretty bad about the whole thing. I wish we could have known that beforehand. We're not down on the local band booking etiquette in the big city, and I don't want any black marks so early on in the game. Anyway, I really appreciate your help and your friend's help too.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 20 September 2004 18:57 (twenty years ago) link

i don't think i'd want to have a combo party if you mean i'd invite people myself. my good friends in chicago don't even know each other well.... i don't tend to invite them to do things in groups. so i'd be happy to come, but it'd just be me. any day but the 3rd is cool.

I really think Sarah has the potential to cause heart palpitations and crushes from afar in tweemo boys everywhere.

See, I kinda feel bad about saying this now, not because it's in any way untrue, but because I didn't know at the time just how true it was.

You two were great. Before tonight, I thought of you both as kind of shy and polite. Talent is incidental to this opinion, you understand -- it's stage presence that makes all the difference, and you two were funny and engaging and *present* every moment you were onstage, and not at all shy, though you retained the politeness. You work well together, and you both know how to behave in front of (possibly) large numbers of people you don't know. That's something I cannot do, and I respect it immensely. And the music was so excellent.

Like I said, Sarah is on her way to becoming an indie icon. Just you wait.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:45 (twenty years ago) link

By BUS!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:47 (twenty years ago) link

WHEEEEE!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:50 (twenty years ago) link

Jocelyn - How many nights would you be staying here? We might be able to put you up, but you must know you'd be sleeping on the couch and that we have kitties (do you have allergies??).

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:51 (twenty years ago) link

I have 3 kitties. I love them, No allergies here. I would probably come up Saturday morning and leave Sunday night. Must check bus schedule, be right back.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

You guys are so nice, you're going to make me cry. This is so frustrating. I'd love to go out with you guys, but the girl won't come with, and will in fact hate me for leaving. But if I stay home, I'll be miserable. I really can't win.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:09 (twenty years ago) link

Nooooooo!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:10 (twenty years ago) link

(um, that was to Kenan.)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

It's your birthday, not hers - go out and have fun with these nutballs.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago) link

Why won't she come with? Does she hate us?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:13 (twenty years ago) link

Jaymc aren't you DJing a halloween thingie this weekend? Or was that last weekend. I can never remember who says what on ILX. We should try and get LEEEEE to come too.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:15 (twenty years ago) link

I DJ'd something two weeks ago! There were costumes, though. That might have confused you.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago) link

That was what I was thinking of.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

jaymc -- She doesn't hate any of you, but she fears standing around bored all night while we talk about music.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

Well I get bored of talking about music sometimes too, but that doesn't stop me from doing it.

Kenan, we don't want to make things uncomfortable for you, so if this won't work, we can go out another weekend and celebrate your birthday then.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

Don't plan around me. I'm lame.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

who's coming to the beat kitchen tonight?

kelsey (kelstarry), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago) link

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

Errr, I forgot about Squeezed, and we have band practice tonight. What time does it start again? 8 or 9?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:37 (twenty years ago) link

8.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

Don't sweat it, dudes.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:40 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, if it was at 9 we might be able to make it for the bulk of it, but I think we're going to have to skip this month. :(

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago) link

i may come!

todd swiss (eliti), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 21:23 (twenty years ago) link

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 12:42 (twenty years ago) link

WHAT ARE CHICAGO PEOPLE DOING 2NITE?
(Just out of curiosity)

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 October 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago) link

If I go see possibly lame dance-punk bands (VHS or Beta and The Fever)at the Empty Bottle, will I want to stab myself?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 October 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

Soon-to-be-ex-boss's house for dinner. Then drinks with my friend Pfeffer later.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 October 2004 18:55 (twenty years ago) link

Good luck, John.

i don't want to do anything social this weekend because i am sick with the bronchitis, again. everyone in italy had the bronchitis. but maybe later in the week someone would want to see "undertow"? btw no big romantic coups to relate but i do have plans with the girl who inspired that thread. yay.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:33 (twenty years ago) link

Yay, am!

Bronchitus is horrible! I once went to the emergency room with it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago) link

Hi am., I thought about calling you at lunch today to see if you were back in town but my cell phone is almost out of batteries. Sorry you are still sick.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:37 (twenty years ago) link

I saw Undertow at CIFF -- it is great!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago) link

(I want to see Vera Drake, though.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

Go am.

Be sure to wear a scarf. It's chilly out.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Friday, 22 October 2004 19:41 (twenty years ago) link

I want to see Undertow as well, so maybe we can do this later in the week.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago) link

I concur.

I'm going to be somewhere tomorrow night drinking. I don't know where yet. Tonight I'm going to read and eat mac and cheese.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago) link

Am, you said:

btw no big romantic coups to relate but i do have plans with the girl who inspired that thread. yay.

So I said, Go Am(ateurist). Cheering you on, like.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:29 (twenty years ago) link

Well it's all ruined now, isn't it.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:30 (twenty years ago) link

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't think it was such a stumper to begin with, but ok.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:32 (twenty years ago) link

i've sort of committed myself to hanging out with sick boyfriend & watching the 2nd season of the office.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:42 (twenty years ago) link

Sigh.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago) link

Nick, you should call me. You live too close for us not to at least do something lame on an off Friday.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:46 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:48 (twenty years ago) link

Or email me, cause that way, I don't have to crank up the old computer to get your phone number or email address off of it. Such a pain. It literally has a hand crank.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:48 (twenty years ago) link

does that make you a neo-luddite?

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:51 (twenty years ago) link

I'm Lo-Tek.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:52 (twenty years ago) link

You just got EMAILED.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:52 (twenty years ago) link

BAM!

I'll check it when I get home. I'm out.

Lifted, or, the story is 'neath my ass (kenan), Friday, 22 October 2004 20:53 (twenty years ago) link

I am kind of good for Saturday night!

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Friday, 22 October 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago) link

Not really a FAP or party or anything, but if people have nothing to do for Halloween and are despairing, we're inviting people to come over to our house and watch a scary movie (to be determined) and help us hand out candy to any trick-or-treaters that happen along. It's not going to be a late night and costumes are optional, but it should be fun. If you want to come, give us a call (most of you have our number) or shoot me an email (naamme @ yahoo.com), people can come over at 7:00.

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 31 October 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago) link

Hey, guys. Back to top with this thread!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Sunday, 31 October 2004 18:28 (twenty years ago) link

I think I'm going to go see Vera Drake (ooh abortions, scary!), but thanx for the invite!

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 31 October 2004 18:42 (twenty years ago) link

Chicago people: sorry to interrupt the FAP thread, but lines at the polls are going to be very long tomorrow (even though it's not a swing state), so you should get out of bed and vote as early as possible.

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 1 November 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, Chicago voter turnout is always HUGE. And I was reading yesterday about all the great stuff they do to help people double check their bollots and such, to ensure a fair election. Nobody has a history of rigged elections quite like Chicago.

I'm getting the day off tomorrow, so I'm sure I'll be ok as long as I can avoid... THE FOG.

(That was a genuinely terrible movie, btw. I enjoyed it.)

Kenan (kenan), Monday, 1 November 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

My company has allowed us to take 2 hours off work with pay. The question is, should I take it at the beginning of the day or the end?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:12 (twenty years ago) link

Depends. What is the end of your day? I think the lines are very long in late afternoon, with a lot of people getting the same idea.

In 2000, I went to the polls when I got out of bed, and I had to get out of line to go to work on time. So I took an extra long lunch hour, and the lines were a hell of a lot shorter (approx 1 PM).

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

It would be the difference between going to the poll at 10 or 11 AM and going at 4 or 5 PM.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago) link

I'm guessing morning, huh?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I think the middle of the day is probably best. 4 or 5 PM would be bad.

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:29 (twenty years ago) link

Also, there are going to be a buttload of judges on the ballot, so be sure to do your research (there are different lists of endorsements online that you can print out). I don't want to tell you who to vote for, but there are lists published by various groups that you can take with you to the polls.

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:41 (twenty years ago) link

I'm not going to say who to vote for, either, but all major lawyers' groups (incl. Chicago Bar Association and Chicago Council of Lawyers) agree that DOROTHY JONES and SUSAN McDUNN are GROSSLY INCOMPETENT. Again, I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 November 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago) link

that was a SHITTY movie.

i'll vote...oh fuck i'll never get up at 7 AM. i'll just vote in the afternoon and bring a book and an umbrella.

amateur!!st, Monday, 1 November 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago) link

In case anyone else cares, WILLIAM O'NEAL is also not recommended for retention by either the CBA or CCL.

In addition, CBA feels that DENNIS MORRISSEY is unqualified; CCL feels that LEIDA SANTIAGO, EDNA TURKINGTON, MELVIN COLE, and ARNETTE HUBBARD are unqualified.

I imagine I'll probably only vote against Jones, McDunn, and O'Neal, since there seems to be a consensus around them. However, I also think it's fairly ridiculous that this is put in the hands of the voting public.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 November 2004 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

Maybe I should just vote against all judges.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 1 November 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago) link

Ha!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 November 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago) link

no judges pleeeeeaaaase.

todd swiss (eliti), Monday, 1 November 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago) link

Kenan, you want money or not???

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 4 November 2004 21:38 (twenty years ago) link

I can't believe I've lived in Chicago for over 10 months!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 4 November 2004 22:13 (twenty years ago) link

i voted at 3 PM and there was no line whatsoever.

by the way when can we have another chicago FAP THREAD?!?!?! this one is about to start crashing my computer.

also sarah and nick i'm coming to wicker park to run an errand tonight so if you want i can stop by and give you the twin peaks tapes. do you think i could have them back by thanksgiving? someone else wants to borrow them then.

amateur!!st, Thursday, 4 November 2004 22:16 (twenty years ago) link

You can probably come by, when do you think you'll be around the area? We might go out for a bit but probably not til 7 or 7:30ish.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 4 November 2004 22:18 (twenty years ago) link

Amateurist, can't you do the "Only show last 50 messages" thing? That's what I do now.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 November 2004 22:18 (twenty years ago) link

jaymc: no, i can't because i can't log in. my password isn't working and the moderators haven't stepped in to help me. and no, it's not a matter of my having forgotten my password. it simply stopped working--for both accounts i've used, no less.

nick i can probably come by at 7ish. i'll call you on your cell a little later.

amateur!!st, Thursday, 4 November 2004 22:22 (twenty years ago) link

There's a free Irish folk concert tonight on the UC campus. If anyone is interested, email me. Though I have to say that I do have a paper to write, and generally need a "Buck up, soldier."
