s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

the funny thing is in THEORY this should work, but it totally doesn't!

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:11 (twenty-one years ago)

xP: This is the thread where Jess and I begin our FEUD.

But not really.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Her eyes look too big for her head.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Heathens, all of you.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

xP: But she's a real life manga character!

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I was never big on Mandy either.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:16 (twenty-one years ago)

now that's just madness

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:17 (twenty-one years ago)

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe no one is mentioning the most important thing about this new Thanksgiving look: bangs.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the shirt. Psychedelic cow.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

OH MY GODO THE BANGS

XOXO

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Katie Holmes au natural is much hotter IMHO. (Is ILE the new Seventeen chatroom?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Forget Katie Holmes, Mary you are my new crush

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Leee, sorry -- normally, I think Katie Holmes is k-rowr, but her Pieces of April look ain't doin' it for me. Esp. that pic, in which she just looks uncomfortable. That shirt is also terrible.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Aww, sweet.

Does anyone thing KH is Lolita-ish? Charlton Lido does but I don't agree, also he was talking a lot of crap that night.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You're looking at the wrong thing if the shirt's bothering you.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:33 (twenty-one years ago)

charlton lido once expressed an attraction to 16 year old starlet hilary duff to me, so i suspect he is not to be trusted

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Oliver Platt staring at her chest, while Patricia Clarkson looks on disapprovingly?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Oliver Platt has a huge beehive whatchu talkin' bout Milo?

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:36 (twenty-one years ago)

He thought it was bc she is so gangly but I thought such tall girls are inherently non-Lolita-like.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary OTM, Katie Holmes does not need the punk raccoon look. Just cowboy boots.

Now Oliver Platt in heavy eyeliner...

Dave M. (rotten03), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

KH in just cowboy boots is what I'll be thinking of when I go to bed.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You've forgotten me already, Leee?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh oh.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Time for another name change.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(Should I know who Oliver Platt is? Is he like Oliver Stone?)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

If Hilary could sing, I might be able to forgive CL for the above.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

uh oh, i put someone in the doghouse

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

to be perfectly fair, he did feel guilty about it

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Oliver Platt has been in lots of things, none of them that memorable. That one where Matthew Perry, where he's an architect, and hitting on someone's wife/girlfriend, who thinks he's gay. And he was the White House Counsel on the West Wing for a while. I think he was the maintenance man for Murphy Brown, too.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 07:56 (twenty-one years ago)

And the Three Musketeers, with Kiefer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen (I bet that was a fun set in the early '90s)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah dude, that wasn't Oliver Platt on Murphy Brown -- it was Robert Pastorelli. Wasn't Platt in The Three Musketeers?

Mary, I don't know if height has much to do with Lolita-ishness (though the literary character was "four feet ten in one sock"): I think just a very young look, and esp. no makeup. Lolitas are fresh-faced.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

He thought it was esp. bc of her height and the fact that it looked like she hadn't grown into her body yet. I think very tall girls are often taken to be older than they are which is one reason I disagreed.

She looks like Cristina Ricci here, sort of.

http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com/j/Katie%20Holmes.jpg

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Katie Holmes looks almost pre-teen in the early episodes of Dawson's Creek.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think she looks like about a sophomore in h.s., which was what she was supposed to be. (She was a h.s. graduate.)

http://www.gobuyersnet.com/holmes.jpg

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm, but I can see charltonlido's point about "not having grown into her body yet" -- is it because she looks so childish in some ways and so adult (and therefore sexual) in others? That weird transitional stage? Also, she's not that tall, is she? Like 5'8" maybe?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, it's not super tall, but is is pretty tall for a girl. Also, the fact that she is a tomboy makes her seem non-Lolita to me, I think of Lolita as being more feminine.

Her come-hither look here does approach Lolita-dom though (though she didn't really make faces like this on the show.)

http://www.spacesurfer.com/wceleb/7632img/index/Katie_Holmes.jpg

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Bangs rock!

Fake red hair too!

mei (mei), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on, that girl has quite noticeable tits, whereas Lolita was twelve, she didn't even have real pubic hair. I think you're mixing "a young adult trying to look like a child" type of charm with the prepubescent charm of Lolita.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

No matter what she looks like I could never get her whinging on in Dawson's Creek out of my head!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 08:58 (twenty-one years ago)

having seen the clip of singing detective that features her in a nurses outfit singing 'me sandman' i did wonder who's been spying inside my head.

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i dont think she looks very good in this picture. she surely cannot be compared to nu-mandy moore.

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Good film though.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

the hair, the make up and the top - all bad... it looks like she just finished dying her fringe in the bathroom sink and blotches of the dye have spread all over her singlet. i had hair like that in 1998. but i think katie holmes is pretty, and would probably look best of all with no makeup. she looked good in 'go' i thought.

minna (minna), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Pieces of Avril eyeliner.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

is nu-mandy moore really that bright of a shade of orange or is my monitor fuXoRed?

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

He thought it was bc she is so gangly but I thought such tall girls are inherently non-Lolita-like.

:(

Anyway she looks absolutely appalling in this incarnation! She's a v. pretty girl but not like this, this is not a good look for her. There's nothing wrong with Hillary Duff?

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

She pales in comparison to the divine Clara Bow.

Broken Record (brokenrecord), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i never thought i would come out against heavy eyeliner, but...

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Ally where is my cd, ok thx bye.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

There are few things I hate less than being harrassed for a FAVOR (esp. since I've already given you a CD and YR cd was in RETURN for my original CD and now I am doing you a FAVOR and sending you a NEW CD to cheer you up, bastard)

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll IM you later... Rock City.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

geeta you do know that's not actually mandy moore at the top of the thread right?

also, ally i think the problem with hilary duff is that charlton could lose his passport in some states for that shit.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

oh right, katie holmes, my bad

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not being a perv here, but I must say, when I saw KH in The Gift, I thought to myself, "That girl has truly beautiful breasts."

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Kate Hudson is not at all attractive, she just seems like a moron. And a hippie

Allyzay, Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Let me add to the chorus of non-praise for Hudson. Yeesh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the very top picture is bloody awful

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I fucking HATE kate hudson

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

And her terrible choice in romantic partners.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

hey look, i was on the rebound okay?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I mentally transposed the words "fucking" and "HATE" in Blount's post and was all "STOP LYING YOU GIGANTIC POSER" for a second.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Not denying I'm a perv, but my reaction to her breasts were more of awe than lust. I'll admit I was a bit jealous, as well.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

oh me too

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed, Chris, but that pic, which looks like half of the ads in Vogue, hardly does her justice.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i just dont have the energy today

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, well, it kinda depresses me that I get so excited every time there's a thread on random female celebrities.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

so i'll start one on suzanne sommers then?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

katie holmes is boring. i pity anyone who thinks she's hot, because she's plain, and if you think she's hot you are a sorry individual.

Vickie Holmes (the red headed sister) (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we completely dissect every aspect of Oliver Platt's appearance now please:

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I just like her breasts, that's all, Vickie.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Oliver Platt's breasts?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Jess, please do. I'll muster up some tired pop-culture jokes for the occasion.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

TS: Oliver Platt vs. Chazz Palminteri

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate Hudson wishes she was a hippy. She's atrocious.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Oliver Platt has been in some terrible, terrible movies. BUT he was in both The Imposters and Funny Bones, two fantastic and odd movies. The latter, especially, with Jerry Lewis, is really really good.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Kate Hudson is not at all attractive, she just seems like a moron. And a hippie

-- Allyzay (wtfeve...), November 12th, 2003.

You're not even CLOSE to being a friend now, wench.

Also, interestingly, I've interviewed both Holmes and Deschanel. Holmes was wearing heels that made her as tall as I was (6'1" or so) so do the math from there.

Zooey would be perfect if you put even half a brain in her head.

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Or as tall as I AM, rather

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as celeb princesses go, after somehow getting sucked into the Exxon Valdez Masterpiece Theatre presentation of Dr. Zhivago last night after coming home from seeing Pirates of the Carribean, I'm thoroughly in love with Keira Knightley right now, who until last night I had never seen in anything, other than #1 on a list of celebrities I am supposedly most compatible with(!?!).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is this list, and how can I find my b-list starlet fucktoy?

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread leads to fear, fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to the dark side.

I was wrong though, Keira Knightley was #3 on my list behind the still-mysterious "Jolin" and Sporty fucking Spice wow.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Laura Wilkinson 99%
Kasey Chambers 99%
Oksana Baiul 98%
Maggie Gyllenhaal 98%
Cassidy Rae 98%

*shrugs*

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE THIS TEST AGAIN because I got like the best match ever in the history of humanity.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Who it is?

ModJ (ModJ), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's not Halle Berry I'll be surprised.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Or maybe it was Fred Durst?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I posted it on the other thread. I am beyond happy (no, I don't know who she is).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a lot of confusion on this thread as to what makes a Lolita. Re no make up, in my opinion that is wrong. There should definitely be make up, even if the result is to look like there is no make up.

There are two types of Lolitas.

1. A younger girl who is attempting to look like a woman. Result: faux ingenue.
eg. The Lover

2. A young woman who is attempting to look like a girl. Result: faux ingenue.
eg Lolita, the movie *original version*.

Confusion may stem from the fact that the Lolita in the book was 12 I think? and the actress in the movie (original) was 16 I think?

As for a TV Lolita I would recommend the blonde school friend of Rory and Paris on Gilmore Girls: pretty, pouty, emphasizes her sexuality while at the same time wearing her hair in pig tails.

Hilary Duff's voice sounds like a braying camel.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

haha mary that's wonderful

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hillary Duff reminds me of a muppet.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

And not in a good way.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the important think about Lolita is that she has to be complicit in her sexuality. She plays with her youth (or the signs of it) knowingly.

A young girl can be seen as a Lolita by an older man -- but that does not make her a Lolita. A Lolita is only a Lolita when she knows she is a Lolita. Otherwise, she is just a young girl.

Nabokov's Lolita was the seductress, not the seduced. Sting's as well.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

hillary duff seems like a 30 year old womans stuffed into the body of a 16 year old.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(No offense, Mary, but that's a pretty literal interpretation of Nabokov's Lolita. She was at least equally seducer and seducee, and probably more of the latter.)

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Did we read the same book?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Please don't take this the wrong way, Mary, I know this reads as condescending, but you are familiar with the concept of the unreliable narrator and Nabokov's fondness for such, aren't you?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be mixing up the book and the movie here, but didn't she come back from camp and explain what she did with her camp friend? That seemed pretty seductive to me.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Though you are right, the story is told not through her eyes but through Humbert's.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't read the book in ages, but surely the whole cultural myth that sprung up after the book paints her as the seducer

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean it's what seperates "lolita" from just underage sex in the mind of the public, no?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

But the book is from the POV of Humbert, not exactly a reliable guy, being a pedophile and all, and sometimes he skews stuff that happens, or even makes stuff up, to present himself in a more favorable light. So Lolita may have talked about what she did at camp, but Humbert could have either changed what she said, or even made up the whole thing, to "justify" what he did. It's complicated. Obviously Lolita was playing a game, trying to act like an adult, but Humbert interprets things the way he wants to, and his is the only point of view we get directly.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

This is getting complicated. How is the Jeremy Irons version?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

boring.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't seen the remake. I like the Kubrick version, I think it's about as good a version they could possibly make in the 1960's, plus it has Peter Sellers. And they didn't forget the humor, which I imagine is something that would happen in the remake - I bet it's all "tragic" or something.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

She doesn't hold a candle to Jordana Brewster.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

You know what's kind of gross? In Japan the movie "The Professional" is like huge. They call it "Leon."

Another important cultural Lolita figure is Serge Gainsbourg's Meldoy Nelson. For my Lolita homework tonight I'm going to watch "Stan the Flasher."

Has anyone seen the movie "Candy"? The book was kind of okay, but not as good as it could have been.

I have a book in my hands called "Weird Moives A Go! Go! Lolita 2000." There is a Lolita movie mandala diagram that I will study. But it's in Japanese so it might take a while.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I just realized I no longer have celebrity crushes.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

mary are you familiar with the backlash against lolita comics in japan after the tsutomu miyazaki "outaku serial killer" case? i am curious as to whether or not they've become more acceptable again in the last 10 years.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not familar with it Jess, as far as I know Lolita is the de facto genre of female sexuality in Japan.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, I meant Fiddo Centington.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Aargh what was I thinking last night???

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

(basically miyazaki was a 27 year old factory worker who molested and killed four girls. when they came to his apartment they found something like 6,000 videos - live action and animated - and comics, mostly slasher and lolita [or some combo of the two]. this led to - as far as i'm aware the only large scale media boycott relating to sex/violence since wwII. i suppose i just find it a bit rich, since, as you say, the lolita is such an ingrained part of modern japanese sexuality, that the public would become so indignant once someone "took it too far". [obviously this is coming dangerously close to policing desire, before the fact.])

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

So Mary, how you doin?

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Before being really clear on the context, I thought Fiddo's last post was about that other Miyazaki, and I suddenly felt really weird about letting my son watch Spirited Away like every week.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ugh

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread sure has gotten "heavy"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Katie Holmes is pretty.

third time's the charm?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Does heavy eyeliner make most plain or not-hot chicks really (or somewhat) hot? I think probably. Take Britney, Pink, Xtina for example...

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

And of course, it just makes the hot chicks stupid-hot.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it just makes them goth.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My computer can see it.

Anyway, here another : :(

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

britney, pink, and xtina are not hot

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The already-hot chicks or the plain chicks?

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

well maybe xtina

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

but you can't shine shit, you know?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary -- great picture of Ms. Holmes.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

jess you a damn fool

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No offense to KT, but for such a slender girl, her face can look Porkie Pig-ish on the big screen. See: Abandon. Or rather, don't.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

she's gotta baby face, it doesn't work well now that she's lengthened out

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(I think that only Gwyneth Paltrow looks sexy in heavy eyeliner, and also that Gwyneth Paltrow only looks sexy in heavy eyeliner.)

Lengthened out? She was already long.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

she lost weight - it accentuated it!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see what was ever wrong with my Maggie/Zooey thread.

I am intrigued by Katie Holmes in general, but she looks like a character in My So Called Life in that top photo. I loved that show, but HELLO-O It's the 00's NOW! LOL! !! ! URHGALSLKDJ!LJ!LK

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I'm a sucker for heavy eyeliner (shocker)

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the shirt is fucking awful

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeanne Fury is very right, she was ultra comely in The Gift.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

There is something kind of dated about Katie's look in this movie, it seems kind of early 90s.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Sarah think of her as a cat & then you will see as I do.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

she was all that in the gift

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I would like to take this opportunity to mention that I was thoroughly knocked out by her white cotton underwear in The Gift.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

jeanne OTM!!!!!

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Except that she really seemed miscast as a quasi-trophy wife b/c she still looked too young OMG LOLEEETA. Then again, if she hadn't been in the film, would we have seen her nakked?

XP: Jeanne keeps on bein otm.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

And by "this movie", I meant Pieces of April.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

See: Abandon. Or rather, don't.

But see it for Zooey!

Re: Lolitas, I have absolutely no idea why I suggested last night that Lolitas wouldn't wear makeup. You're right, Mary. Maybe I was projecting!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The best part about your Maggie/Zooey thread, Sarah, is that smack dab in the middle of it, we played Boggle.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Katie Holmes is very attractive, but I don't like the bangs or the eyeliner... Heavy eyeliner is better on older women, otherwise it (and bangs) just look goth.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

and, for contrast, here's some Nu Mandy Moore:
http://www.avalonclubhouse.com/images/mandymoore.jpg

The Gift was great for that one Giovanni Ribsi scene alone...

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-one years ago)

If I squint it looks like she's got heavy eyeliner on.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

She was grody on the Gift. I've said this before but I'll say it again, I don't want to see KT in a thong, or nude in a bathtub.

The other thing about KT, when they try and make her a bad girl, it just doesn't work. Like in Teaching Ms. Tingle, she was supposed to be punk-ish?

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005PJ6R.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

On One Tree Hill what's his name's best friend I thought was at first faux KT-ish, but now I think she's kind of OK.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

KT?

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary OTM about Katie not being able to play "bad girls." I don't know if it's just a matter of her being so identified with Joey Potter, but she also just looks uncomfortable half the time (look at that photo!).

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Uncomfortably comely!

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

so, as you can see, it looks like we're going to be divided on this issue for quite some time. Shall we call a recess?

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

KH's look in POA IS very early 90s. It's like some mid-thirtyish guy's idea of what hip young people in New York look like, except he hasn't met any hip young people since he was in college.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Whoa. The FBI is going to pay me to SURF?"

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is your KT pic from, Mary?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(The Gift. Do not see.)

I have just come to the realization that early Jennifer Love Hewitt in Party of 5 was the prototypical Joey.

I wish that this thread was Katie Holmes vs. Michelle Williams.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

(The Gift. Do not see.)

Too late. Cuz, ummm, I'm with Jeanne.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought JMC was talking about the one above the socialite KT from THe Gift.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The one where she's a fake punk.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That was my pic, and it's from Disturbing Behavior.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Mary, I finally watched One Tree Hill last night. Hillary from TRL is the punk.cheerleader girl. THIS SHOW MUST BE CANCELED!!!

Television Without Pity has the most addictive Dawson's Creek E true hollywood story gossip thread. Do not read if you love Katie Holmes.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

At least she isn't Hilary Duff. Off to TVWP. One Tree Hill is the best show currently running on television. Last night I was so caught up in the drama that I actually looked up from ILE a few times.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Link, Carey? (I can't find it on the main page.)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to go through many pages but it is all fairly entertaining.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea what they're talking about. It's like I never watched Alias and started this season.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

THANK YOU CAREY

JJ a man-whore?! :(

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

a manSLUT. i thought we covered this yesterday.

Jay Dee Sah Mon (Kingfish), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

And it all comes full circle:

For his part, Jackson isn't naming any names, though he does refer to Michelle Williams as \"Lolita.\" Perhaps this is a slip, perhaps not.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

:(

As to the JJ manwhore stuff- UNC-Wilmington had sororities where hooking up w/a cast member was a hazing ritual. He reportedly was more than happy to oblige.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, I never should've asked. TOO ADDICTIVE!!! (Thanks, Carey!)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, van der Beek and the Flash!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

She looks so much better like this:

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

There's something about that photo that looks like a fake; maybe it's just the cocked angle, but the head looks weirdly Photoshopped.

On p. 10 and KT still squeaky clean.

KH does lie about her height. She's almost 6ft. Once, when someone innocently commented on her being "really tall" she had a major hissy fit. Just like Beek, she's very sensitive about the issue.

Carey you have brought much joy and knowledge. Er, how long does that thread go on for?

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

If you haven't gotten to any bad KH stuff you are not even past the halfway mark. I think when I looked there were about 35 pages maybe.

Although, most of the KT stuff is not bad, just kind of calling her a freak and stuff.

Carey (Carey), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd just like to note that Katie Holmes is so not hot in that pick that started this damn thing.

Thanks for the link, Carey!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haven't heard about KH having had implants but I have heard that she was "digitally enhanced" in The Gift.

That explains it!

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Man there is something serious fucked about putting bigger breasts on a corpse in a movie.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Katie is a republican and hugely pro Bush.

?

I think it's starting Carey.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

1. She is alive and nekkid in the movie too!

2. The conservababe angle must explain my whole thing.

Leee Majors (Leee), Wednesday, 12 November 2003 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

A driver who was responsible for for his transportation said CMM would talk about how the WB had plans to make him a big star yada yada yada.

And they're still working on it.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 November 2003 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris and Katie is definitely The Real Deal. A proper adult, loving relationship (which you'd expect given their longevity). Now I know most people don't get what Katie sees in him, seeing as he's dumb, boring, talentless and has a forehead to rival the Beek's but he's actually very laidback and sweet. The exceptionally low IQ does not bother her, she doesn't look for smartness in a guy.

Scintillo is my Nu-God.

I am upset to hear about the eating disorders though.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do they always say, "Topic? . . . " before they write something interesting? We should start doing that here.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Those people are (even more) disturbed (than ILX)(me).

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 13 November 2003 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Topic? I have just finished that thread. Carey has ruined me forever. I used to be innocent. I used to think KT was innocent. Actually, she is innocent. Just a Freak. :(

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only halfway through the thread. But I have actual work to do tonight! This is not good!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 November 2003 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

If I didn't like the series finale, would there be any reason to buy the unedited DVD verson? (Please say yes.)

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 13 November 2003 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

They say Topic? because the boards are heavily moderated and there is hell to pay if you veer off topic or start a post with a condescending

the best was when the president of whatever studio produced that movie was asked if he thought it was weird that it was being released the same day as "chasing liberty" which is like exactly the same movie (it was later bumped), and he was all "we have a better movie with a prettier star so we're not worried!"

You mean Forest Whitaker, director of WAITING TO EXHALE? The shock and awe!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 29 July 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I associate Forest Whitaker with Tough But Understanding Cop roles (Phone Booth, the one where the kids take a high-school guard hostage) and Ghost Dog. Not Katie Holmes romantic comedies.

http://images.usatoday.com/life/_photos/2005/04/28/inside-cruise-holmes.jpg

In what could be the most surprising celebrity coupling of the year, actor Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes on Wednesday announced to the world — via a photograph of them hand-in-hand — that they are dating.

Cruise, 42, and Holmes, 26, have been dating only a few weeks, her publicist told USA TODAY.

The budding romance came to light Wednesday when the couple arrived together in Rome, where Cruise is being honored at the David di Donatello. Awards, Italy's top film awards, the syndicated TV show Extra reports.

Cruise's sister and publicist, Lee Anne DeVette confirmed to Extra and Us Weekly that the couple are dating. They are scheduled to meet with Italy's president on Friday in advance of the award ceremony, DeVette told Extra.

It's unclear how Cruise and the much-younger actress met.

Holmes, best known for her role on WB's teen drama Dawson's Creek, hasn't been single very long. In March, Holmes and actor Chris Klein, 25 (American Pie), called off their engagement after a five-year relationship.

Cruise's last long-term girlfriend was actress Penelope Cruz, 30. The couple split up in January 2004 after three years.

Last month, Cruz was linked to Colombian actress Sofia Vergara after they were photographed together, but their reps said they were just friends.

Cruise and Nicole Kidman, 37, were divorced in 2001.

Cruise and Holmes are starring in two summer blockbusters. She appears in Batman Begins, opening June 15; he's in Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds, opening June 29.

Nicole Kidman was the love interest when Val Kilmer was Batman.

In fact, IMDB tells me Nicole Kidman "has appeared in My Life (1993/I) with Michael Keaton, Batman Forever (1995) with Val Kilmer, The Peacemaker (1997) with George Clooney and The Portrait of a Lady (1996) with Christian Bale. All four actors have played Batman in a movie."

This is a little disappointing because I really do think that Katie Holmes and Jaymc would be good together.

Why does keep picking these gigantor size women to be his beards? You would think he would stick with midgets to make him look tall.

All I have to say is that Katie's breasts are waaaay too excellent for TC.

Let's start an internet petition to get Katie Holmes to go out with jaymc. I think he'd be good for her, keep her levelheaded when her movie goes to #1 and console her when her role as Woody Allen's girlfriend in his next shitty movie gets panned.

I'm just sick of how the media just continues to focus far too heavily on the tragedies that befall beautiful white women, just in order to spice up ratings. There are other new stories that need far greater attention than this.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 28 April 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

I think is a media farango. According, to Gawker, that estimable site, she has been spotted multiple times locking lips with Josh Hartnett in the East Village.

I am Tivo'ing the last 2 seasons of DC. I forward through all the parts that do not have KT's pretty face in them.

The Sun claims Tom Cruise's new girlfriend Katie Holmes is a virgin. It says the pair - Tom, 42 and Katie, 26 - were snapped on a romantic break.

Why are the women Tom Cruise dates always ones who everybody thinks are gay? And hasn't he been shagging Anthony Hopkins, anyway?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:11 (twenty years ago)

Before today, Katie Holmes was the person in the world I most wanted to meet. Now, my idol has crashed against the shore. I don't believe they are "really" together--KT moved to NYC recently, and where the fuck does TC live--LA? No one has even seen them together before this, and now their publicist/sister conveniently lists that they are a couple?! Have they even met before this weekend?? I hope she becomes the uber Hollywood movie star she aspires to be. Oh for the innocent days of The Ice Storm. A sigh for Tobey, the first to go bad, and now for KT. I think she's very reserved and shy (in public anyway) and he is like a cyborg. Why why why ? ? ? Christ Klein was bad enough, and now this. And isn't she itching to get married and have kids??? Is TC really her best choice. Maybe we will wake up tomorrow and find out this has been one sick joke. Since Claire Danes went over to the dark side, KT was my #1 post-teen star. Who can fill those shoes now?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 29 April 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Tom Cruise and Actress Katie Holmes Dating
Wed Apr 27, 2005 9:53 PM ET

April 28, 2005- In a statement released to "Access Hollywood," the father of actress Katie Holmes responds on behalf of their family to the news that she is dating Tom Cruise. The story airs on "Access Hollywood" Thursday, April 28, 2005.

"Happy and excited for Katie," says the statement from Toledo attorney Martin Holmes. "She has a good head on her shoulders and we trust her judgment. We know Tom Cruise is a humanitarian and we feel good about that."

Perhaps then, they also saw something unusual in the absence of one expected guest, the actress Katie Holmes, who was revealed last week to be in a relationship with Tom Cruise, the ex-husband of Ms. Kidman. Ms. Holmes was expected to be a guest of the designer Carolina Herrera. "Katie canceled at the last minute," said Mario Grauso, the president of the fashion division of Puig, which owns Ms. Herrera's business.

She skips the fashion gala to go see the Cirque Soleil with Tom in Las Vegas.

Why she skipped the Costume Party:

The "Batman Begins" actress was due to sit at designer Carolina Herrera's table, but, a source tells us, "Katie realized she'd be swarmed with reporters and photographers now everyone knows she's dating Tom Cruise."

"Katie loves Mrs. Herrera," Holmes' reps tells us. "But after returning from abroad, she was extremely overwhelmed with what is happening in her life right now."

Cruise: "I Can't Be Cool with Holmes"
Tom Cruise excused himself for leaping all over TV talk show Oprah Winfrey's sofa and giggling through their recent interview by stating love had turned him into a lunatic. The movie star spent the first half of his TV interview with Winfrey, which aired yesterday in America, cooing about his girlfriend Katie Holmes and punching the air. He said, "I can't be cool... I can't be laidback. It's something that has happened and I feel I want to celebrate it and I wanna celebrate her. She's a very special woman." But the movie star admits he was cool when they first started dating - as he laid on a series of romantic surprises including a motorcycle ride on a beach and decorating their hotel room in Rome, Italy with rose petals. He added, "I don't really go to restaurants because I like doing things... I'm a romantic, I love stuff like that... I like treating a woman the way that she deserves to be treated. I was raised by women and I love this woman. With me, it's scuba diving and motorcycles and roses. I like seeing people happy... and I celebrate that and so I feel like I wanna share it with people because it's something that's very special." And when Winfrey asked him if he truly was smitten with Holmes, he laughed, "I'm standing on your couch!"

A Clear is a person who no longer has his own reactive mind. He has vanquished it forever. Without the stimulus-response mechanisms of the reactive mind which can cause a person pain, unwanted sensations and negative emotions, a Clear can act rather than react. A Clear has a very high degree of personal integrity and honesty, and is living proof that man is basically good. His own basic beingness returns and his own basic personality flourishes. A person loses all the fears, anxieties and irrational thoughts that were held down by pain in the reactive mind and, in short, regains himself when he goes Clear.

KT went to visit a S&ent*l*gy learning center and the Celebrity Center in L.A. last week at the behest of her man.

I Tivo'ed the Oprah Experience. It was a thing of rare beauty and joy. Tom could not sit down. It was like the Elvis 66 comeback special. However, I don't think KT planned to be on TV. Her hair wasn't done in that lustrous Penelope Cruis style that Tom's people sculpted for her in Italy, she had little to no make-up on, and I detected remnants of that old facial problem. Her hair was limp and falling in her face and she was hiding behind it. I wondered, Why does Katie look so plain? And then I realized that she wasn't made up for TV like they were. She whispered/mouthed something to Tom that could have been either "I love you" or "I'm going to kill you" to which he responded to the audience "AMAZING!!!" I hate to say it, but based on the way KT was acting, I thought for a minute, maybe this isn't a hoax, or maybe it started out as one but now KT is kind of into it. She ruffled the hair on the back of his head just like Joey did to Pacey. She was standing between Tom and Oprah and they were each hanging on to part of her like she was a very tall marionette.

He seemed anxious and nervous.

And then he goes into this disgusting PR-type spin on his kids and "Steven" and it just sounds so canned you can't believe it.

two weeks pass...
LONDON - Katie Holmes says she's embracing Scientology, the religion of her boyfriend, Tom Cruise.

Holmes, in London to promote her new film, "Batman Begins," was asked if she is taking lessons in the Church of Scientology, a religion founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

"Yes, I am, and I'm really excited about it," she said Monday.

The 26-year-old actress and Cruise went public with their romantic relationship in April. The former star of television's "Dawson's Creek" grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall and has said she grew up wanting to marry him.

"We all keep dreaming, and luckily, dreams come true," Holmes said.

She dismissed critics who have accused the couple of staging a relationship for publicity of their new movies.

"It doesn't hurt me at all. There are a lot of people really, really happy for us. It's really exciting. We are so happy. I don't really care about the critics," she said.

Asked about wedding plans, Holmes replied: "There's nothing official to report."

Cruise was in Tokyo Monday for the premiere of his new film, "War of the Worlds."

In an interview in the June 17 issue of Entertainment Weekly, the 42-year-old actor was asked if Holmes is curious about Scientology.

"Yeah, absolutely. She digs it," he tells the magazine.

In response to a question about whether he'd asked Holmes not to do "Factory Girl" — about Edie Sedgwick and Andy Warhol — because of the drug use in the movie, Cruise says: "I don't even know what `Factory Girl' is."

He adds: "Listen, the thing you've got to know about Katie is that she's an incredibly bright and self-determined woman. She makes her own decisions."

Cruise was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, and dated Penelope Cruz for several years.

Holmes and actor Chris Klein recently called off their engagement, after dating for five years.

The Fix
Katie Holmes turns zombie, hops up on furniture. Keri Russell, Cruise's next convert?

July 11, 2005 | Morning Briefing:
Creepy Katie: Katie Holmes has given a creepy, creepy interview to W magazine, in which she stares into space and answers pretty much any question put to her with pat phrases like "I've found the man of my dreams," "I've never met anyone like Tom," and "Tom is the most incredible man in the world." "This is how the conversation begins; this is also how it continues, and how it ends. No question can do much to change its course," writes Robert Haskell in W's August issue. At one point during the interview, her new "best friend" and Scientology minder Jessica Rodriguez jumps in to add, of Holmes' feelings for Cruise, "You adore him" -- and to condemn people who speculate that the whole Holmes/Cruise thing is just a sham, calling them "just rude" and gushing "Have you ever been in love? You just want to share it with the world." At another point, Holmes is brought a gift from Cruise, a Chanel diamond necklace that prompts her to, yes, jump up on the furniture and shout "He's my man! He's my man!" She then announces that she can "do splits too," and demonstrates, adding, "I love him." (W)

Part of the very disturbing interview is here:http://www.style.com/w/feat_story/070505/full_page.html It's a really wonderful, well written article I think. This whole thing is like one huge backlash. I can see KT Co. wanting to get some new mag feature press bc the latest mag covers which came out at the time of her engagement had her newly single and living in NYC. Nice to see W didn't just do a fluff piece. I guess TomKat will ban them now though. The whole thing will be in the next issue of W magazine. Can't wait. I didn't know I had any respect left for KT that could be destroyed and yet that article managed to do it.

I just bought Cosmo Girl with KT on it (ha ha) (http://www.cosmogirl.com/free/winit/0,,7q1h11r4,00.html) on the way home from the gym. It's another pre-Tom piece and it is really sad in that it shows her admittedly in a transition: from Klein to single, from L.A. to NY. It hinted that a problem with Klein was KT's desire to be a big star, and while I can't really see that being a problem for him, but who knows? she talked about feeling like you have to apologize for things and then just realizing, this is what I want, I'm going to go for it. Could be her realising that she wants to be a Grade A star and also realizing that she doesn't have to be ashamed of it. It's really sad beccause in the article she said she didn't know where she was going at the moment, but that if you trust your intuition things will work out. She said (eerily presaging Tom-thought) that you have to dream big and nurture others' dreams. So, if she did want to go for the big star thing, maybe she thought Tom would be the way to do it. Or maybe she truly respects Tom bc he is such aa big star. But it seems that no one is buying yet, yet they soldier on blindly.

I'm thinking of maybe adoping Evan Rachel Wood as my new young interest actress. She doesn't have the same soulfull eyes that KT has, alas.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 11 July 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

But Mary, the instant you do that Tom Cruise will start dating her! (It's just a theory I'm working on; were you ever a big Nicole Kidman booster?)

Heh: no, I thought Nic was okay but never payed her too much mind. Ditto for Penny, since she left Almodovar for Hollywood. I guess she's going to make another movie with him now though.

My so-called wholesome girls, past and present:

Claire Danes (until Billy horror)
Katie (until you know what)
Alexis Bledel (safe but not as enticing)

Shortlist:

Evan Rachel Wood (ethererally pretty, but a bit too icey?)
Amber Tamblyn (cute, but not a fan of her show, but she did give an interview saying she would never date a movie star, so +)
Rachel Billson ( a bit older, more savvy, not sure about this one, but great fashion sense)

Any suggestions? Youthfulness plus high TV profile are prized.

One eerily prescient, disconerting note in that hard-hitting CosmoGirl expose, when asked which new movie she was excited about, KT said she really wanted to see Penny Cruz's movie. Did hero worship of the Cruz lead her to the Cruise? Were she and Penny already friends? Inquiring minds want to know.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

No worries, Stencil, KT has declined the Edie roll at the request of Mr. Wonderful. I really think Chloe S. should play that roll. Or, Evan Rachel Wood!

two weeks later, they came back in a huff, claiming that employees had either stolen or copied the files. They sent in private investigators pretending to be cops. they bought reams of paper, slashed them open and checked inside for the "missing" documents. they then left in a huff.

the staff dumped everything into the recycle bin, and that was that. again.

From Slate's tabloid round-up:

Life & Style still thinks TomKat is history. The tab quotes an "insider" who says, "She's hating life, and she feels it's all Tom's fault." But Star says the pair are still together and are busy arguing about their kid's name. He wants "Ron" or "Hubbard," after Scientology's esteemed founder. "Katie, however, is concerned that calling the child Hubbard would make her baby a laughingstock. Undeterred, Tom loves to rub Katie's belly and say hi to his 'little Hub,' a source says."
