What do you think your ILX persona is, and how does it relate to what you are like in real life?

For Nickalicious and Ally.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Come Saturday the ILXors I will meet will be quite surprised at how shy and quiet I am in real life.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I would say mine is pretty accurate although there is quite alot that I don't say for fear of insulting ppl & also not being arsed with it.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm pretty much me, though I am also pretty shy and less prone to actual violence in real life. A bit more poofy, though.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

crank, and it doesn't.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

got no persona
neither here nor in real life
man that kinda sucks.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm actually a middle-aged Korean woman who loves her job.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

A lot more poofy.

I am an "insufferable cunt" on ILX. And IRL too.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

cept IRL you talk entirely in haiku... (double x-post)

Matt (Matt), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

pedantic and full of cant. on ilx i'm not so sure.

enrique (Enrique), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've met a lot of ILXors. V. v. few of them have matched what I would've expected in my head from what they post online. In fact, I think I can safely say the only person who was what I expected was Ned Raggett.

note: not being "what I expected" is not a bad thing! Haha in some cases this is a "good thing"

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

the fact that I need a long vacation from this place was clinched with that queer eye thread title--who the fuck knows what it was supposed to have meant.

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I tend to talk faster than i think.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, matos, I don't even know you.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know any more.

I've been through so many online and IRL personnas that I can't figure out any more which one is the real me.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ie, I think I come across as "twee" because Sarah and I talk about each other abnd our cats all the time, but I don't think I'm twee. Like I stated last week, I swear a lot, drink beer, listen to noisy abrasive music, etc. And now I have a tattoo, though it is kind of twee.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'm pretty similar offline and my reflection online is true

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Matos - at least your name doesn't pop up in thread titles along with the words "zombie", "cum", and "guzzle"!

I think ILX makes me seem much mellower than I really am. There are many many witnesses to the fact that I am certainly not a mellow individual.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw, don't leave Matos.

I am probably more argumentative on the board than I normally am but otherwise I can't think of too many big differences.

NA you don't come across as twee.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

IRL, I get ignored a lot more. Possibly because I sit quietly in a corner cursing my own deafness.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

When I met Nick and Sarah I expected them to be wearing matching angora sweaters and drinking tea and listening to Belle & Sebastian. But NA is actually the hardest man in the world!! I said "Hi nice to meet you" and he punched me in the gut! For laughs!

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm spontaneously funny IRL, whereas on ILX not so much because I'm a minor character at best.

Dale the Titled (cprek), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the feeling that ppl's 'personae' online are closer to their inner lives than their realtime personalities.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I embrace my online & irl tweeness!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea how I come off in real life, for real! I seriously wish I knew. I think I might be a lot meaner in real life.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

my online persona is tubbs but my everyday reality is crockett! wtf!

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

(rjg, I'm confused by your post--I know you don't know me, and vice versa. why are you sorry?)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I come across as hairer and taller on ILX. I talk fanny in both worlds.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really know how I come across on ILX.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I am almost cripplingly shy, thus my posts are more like a window to my brane than a sense of what it is like to encounter me in real life.

I'm also a good deal shorter and more English than my posts make me sound.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

God knows, you lot tell me. (I think I'm pretty much the same IRL)

Anna (Anna), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Nordic/adaml, I always thought you were tall.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna OTM. I don't think anyone can accurately judge *themselves* in terms of the disparity/likeness of their online and IRL personna.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I think Julio is the only ILXer I've met who might be shorter than me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this is kind of why I can't be bothered to answer this question, what Kate and Anna said, of course everyone's going to be like "Oh I come off like this" but what you think you are coming off as and what you actually come off as can be very different things! Like I said, I've met a lot of US ILXors now and just about none of them come off exactly the same--the funny thing is once you get to know them you start to twist their posts into their persona so that it all makes sense but the expectation on first meeting is the real shocker.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a lot nicer on here than I am IRL, I find it easier being rude to people's faces than doing it online.

Matt (Matt), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, people tend to judge "who you are" by how you behave at FAPs or other general meeting points. I know for a fact that how I behave in large groups of people is very different from how I behave in one-to-one situations. So even if you have "met" a poster, that doesn't mean you know what they're actually like.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

you'll all be lucky to get two words out of me at a FAP.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Roughly, what nordic said. I am stand-offish/rude/sarcastic out of shyness sometimes. Don't know what my persona really is here, but I am much less witty in real life ha.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

noone can ever truly 'know' anyone

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hence: monogamy is a trap

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Things Ilx-ers have said about me (they may also be way off beam):

"Classy" (ha!, but thanks N.)
"Nice"
"You suck"
"Kind of like a Diet Suzy, or Suzy-lite"
"She can skin up"

"Anna: 'The world of men has ended'
[orcs cheer]
Anna: 'I bought a new hat!'
[orcs cheer more]"

"Considerate"
"You're a very good mimic"
"You write in a very sensual way. I will think of you as the girl who is always on ecstasy"

Anna (Anna), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I am still waiting for the day that Ally and I meet IRL and then the world will end in a giant explosion of matter and anti-matter.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I have Perry's Disease: I worry that my online persona is just a collection of quick dumb lines, no real substance. But interaction is interaction, so when I'm too busy to actually think and write about something (a bigger job for me than most), a few wisecracks is where it's at.

I think I'm better in person, though that's been on the blink a bit recently as well :)

I've met a lot of ILXors. V. v. few of them have matched what I would've expected in my head from what they post online.

Yeah, snap. Sometimes it feeds back, though. Like I was expecting some enormous Military Man when I met Millar, but he's nothing like that. And now I've met him and got an image of him (and stuff he cares about as well as knows about), that changes how I read posts by him.

xpost - what you said.

Also, there are certain combinations of people and subject where conversation can only take place IRL, as discussing it on ILX would be about as much fun as pounding nails into your dick.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Anna - I assume when you were called a Suzy-lite, you whipped out an axe and chopped them off at the knees? (er, no offense suzy)

Kate: Lara must also be present.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew F, you are very different IRL. Better, I think.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar and Ally were both a lot nicer IRL than I expected. Ally was similar to her ILX persona, but I didn't think I would get along with her.

NA (Nick A.), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I *will* get along with Ally, which is now worrying me.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think of Lara as a newbie. :-P Meeting Ally would be like a meeting of the 12 foot lizards, in terms of how long I've known of her and how long I still haven't met her in.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

In fact, I think I can safely say the only person who was what I expected was Ned Raggett.

I yam what I yam. < / Popeye >

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

A comedy idiot with no substance who posts in capital letters. Marcello to thread to say OTM.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Im kind of scared to meet ILXOrs.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 17 November 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I will ever meet any ilxors that I haven't met already so it's kind of irrelevant anyway.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

My spur-of-the-moment dumb comments tend to be funnier.

or at least, i will hurt myself to make you laugh.

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite fancy meeting up when I get parole.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Starry off the money.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the idea of convicts saying things like "I quite fancy".

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX persona: comical more than funny, wacky, grumpy but only in a wacky and comical way, e-head.

real life: slightly quieter possibly but I haven't got to know any ILXors offline extremely well, despite meeting a few on a few occasions. I vary alot between groups of people I think, I try to be unpredictable, I doubt this is the case. I suppose I should just admit, yeah e-head in real life, prospective employers.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the idea of convicts saying things like "I quite fancy".

C'mon, you've never heard of gentlemen bandits?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

"I quite fancy stabbing the guard in the ribs today."

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Wouldn't you?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, yes I would.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I expected Tom to be completely different in real life and also quite enormous for some reason! I think prior to meeting him he was, in my head, like Boomhauer from King of the Hill except intelligible. I totally though I was going to get along with him but not "get along with him" wink wink nudge nudge etc.

The person who is least like his ILX persona, to me, is Gareth.

I have often been told exactly what NA just said about me--"You're a lot like your ILX persona except I thought I would hate you"

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth is sometimes like his ILX persona. I got a text message last week saying "hey dude have you got any coathangers", followed by "oh sorry that text was meant for holden caulfield".

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to think of myself as one of those Andalucian bandits of the 19th century, harrassing upper class English ladies on their grand tour. I'd call myself 'Large Bits'.

In reality I work for an insurance company.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"I expected Tom to be...quite enormous for some reason!"

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(matos, minna asked me if it was a good idea to post the thread and I didn't say "no.")

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my ILX persona is that of a yes-man. haha.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

not really, you fucks.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

That's more than enough, blount.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i found julio and bob (zemko) to be quite different in real life (as in, they were nice ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"That's more than enough, blount." (sorry)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! if I had a dime for every time...

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm not that offended by the thread, but having never seen the show as well as generally taking myself too fucking seriously my response was a little suspicious...)

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm pretty much the same in both places, maybe a little quicker to get annoyed by things on the net

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a lot more... irritating on ILX than I am in real life I think. IRL I tend not to talk to people until I've known them for about five months, whilst on here I just chat shit immensely. Most of it unwarranted.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I would have said that I'm pretty much the same online here as I am in real life - I hardly ever stop to think about what I'm posting, but just rattle away on the keyboard as though I am talking to you all face-to-face, so I wouldn't be that different, would I?

But then a good friend of mine who has known me for donkey's years was posted overseas with his job, and we now only communicate via email. He says I am very different indeed, to the point that he wouldn't even know it was me. That really surprised me. I wanted to know just how different I was, but he couldn't explain. I expect he's just used to seeing me in real life where I wave my arms around and giggle a lot. I don't think that translates to the screen very well.

C J (C J), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom was a lot more approachable in real life than I thought he would be for some reason. (And not huge)

I feel like I am pretty much the same in real life as I am here, except that I don't think my rock music obsession really comes through here as much as it does normally.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Cabbage, you're a "big soft teddy bear", to quote someone very close to your heart ;)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris talks about things other than football in real life. I think.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm better-looking IRL.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i've never met an ILXor in real life that i didn't like, including Dom (who had the patience of a saint considering i a) kept giving him the wrong answers on the pub trivia game, b) spilt drinks over him and c) asked to borrow money off him whilst leaning on a cash machine

god now I sound like a twat...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"sound like"

(sorry, you asked for it)

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I've known Chris ten years and not once have we had a non-football conversation. He simply doesn't have the vocabulary.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew, you're pretty much wrong there.
Teddy bear? grrr oh,wait......

ha ha x-post with the G

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just as dull IRL as I am here.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Outside of the confines of the internet, my non-hippyness is very much evident!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

How can Nickalicious be a hippy? He works in insurance?! (Don't you?)

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

My internet personna is tired and cranky and going home now before I feel any more unloved. Sigh.

Citizen Kate (kate), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I am just as nasty as my online persona

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

IRL I also have a good memory.

how different are you in your online to real life persona?

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

IRL my memory is better than it apparently is here: whatever happened to Toraneko?! I miss her!

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

she pops in very occasionally

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

too occasionally

M Matos (M Matos), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

In my experience, Gareth is exactly like his online persona! Although this may be because I talk to him about things I think his online persona would like to talk about, if that makes sense.

There is a huge yawning chasm between Julio IRL and online.

I have no idea how different I am these days. I think I've just lost all self-awareness.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I am v. different off-line, I think. That said, almost everyone I've met has been pretty close to what I thought they would be like. Or is that hindsight?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

why are people who are quite normal and timid IRL sometimes so wannabe hardman on the net? is it really just because they can be?

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i say 'dude' a lot and speak in one-liners in real-life too!

geeta (geeta), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Can you tell me how to lose all self-awareness pls Matt?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Anonymity is great armour I suppose.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

why are people who are quite normal and timid IRL sometimes so wannabe hardman on the net? is it really just because they can be?

personally i do it out of irrational jealousy

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

As is having thousands of miles and possibly an ocean separating you from a punch in the face.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Anonymity is great armour I suppose"

What's that mean you idiot?

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Arguing with myself. Time to go home, thinks I.

Mikey G (Mikey G), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a fair point G, just worded in your erm idiosyncratic style. I think about this quite a bit (perhaps too much), you get people who, you meet them in real life and they're amazingly quiet/timid, and then let them loose on the net and they're all of a sudden exactly the opposite. If it's people I've met I find it quite odd.

chris (chris), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I talk a lot less shit in real life, in the one-liner department anyway.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

ILX - niceish, talkative, slightly contrary, silly, happy?

Real Life - not so talkative unless I know ya really well, not quite so happy, still quite silly but a bit meaner. But, then I only really meet ilxers at FAPs, and as I'm not much of a pub-person, so I feel a bit out-of-place.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

There is a huge yawning chasm between Julio IRL and online.

So true. I thought stevem was very similar to his online persona (that's a good thing). I met gygax! and he didn't talk about baseball even once! What a rip! ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

My persona is pretty accurate, except when I try to argue or reason something out in a considered fashion, because in real-life I trip all over my concepts. (Example: when I was trying to defend dance music to the guy at the Infrared FAP.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

So is the shy/timid vs not shy/timid dichotomy the biggest difference? I'd say so.

(also I am usually v conciliatory IRL, as Kate/Starry/Tag and others already know. I'd buy trife a pint, but doomie can whistle. I'm still up for the fist fight.)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really have a carefully constructed "ILX persona" -- but in person I probably seem a little more introverted/shy/self-conscious. In general, my personality, quirks, moods, likes, dislikes, aesthetics (if you will), are kinda all over the place and hard to pin down, so I can't come up with a pat answer for this.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

In real life I'm a cunt

Garibaldi, Monday, 17 November 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually have no idea how I come across online. Probably like a wanker who should drink less coffee.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm pretty much the same, except warmer, and not in black and white irl.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

im probably not as twee, or, uh, as sexually-active as i think i might try to make myself seem on ILX.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i got called a slut by an ILX'er on AIM yesterday!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess online i come off as an immature ass with nothing significant to contribute but ass and dick jokes. in real life im quite different if i've never met you. really quiet. but if i get to know you, then its real life ass and dick jokes.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't really have a carefully constructed "ILX persona"

This is interesting...do any people actually specifically think about the persona they are creating in their posting?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno. ally maybe?

that was not meant to be an insult. (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I would find it hard to believe if Amateurist was exactly like his online persona, but maybe...

(not that I'm suggesting it's constructed, btw)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno because for about 6 months i thought amateurist was a lesbian.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

hahaha!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

When you're met with posts like "I thought being a slut was the point of you!" I don't really see the point in showing the "real you" on ILX. That does not imply a "carefully constructed persona" but rather a very selected viewing of what you are about.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

well, if you only show one side of yourself, then you can't blame people for only seeing that one side. that's all i'm saying.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't post as much as most of you, so I'm not sure I have an ILX persona, per se. Which is actually kind of accurate because I'm a wallflower in social situations.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i have split personalities, crazy one minute and a sad tweeist the next.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

phil, you just made me lose my appetite.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying otherwise. I'm saying sometimes trying otherwise is pretty unsuccessful around here. I mean, I'm directly quoting you in my post above, jody. You can't blame people for playing up that side to aggravate the easily aggravated when they're going to say things like that.

xpost with Phil.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I'm just there, and if I hang around long enough I might occasionally say something worth paying attention to, otherwise people will just ignore me. This is true both here and in the real world.

My s*n*st*r persona was better for some reason. I have no idea why. Not that it was a persona, I just posted better there.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I met someone several years ago who I'd gotten to know through emails. When she met me IRL she commented that I talk exactly like I write. I'm not sure if that was a compliment or not.

But I'm pretty much the same as how ailsa describes herself really.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I notice I come across a little weird on ILX

Michael B, Monday, 17 November 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

well, if you only show one side of yourself, then you can't blame people for only seeing that one side. that's all i'm saying.

Yeah, it's like if someone was only ever photoed in profile, then people are always going to be surprised that they exist in 3d. Everyone clear?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

andrew, it's not like that at all and you know it.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

One thing that is very different about ILX me as opposed to real-life me is that I don't approach most conversations as potential ways of making me laugh. (This doesn't stop me from laughing at almost everything, though.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 November 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm must nastier in real life.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought i was kind of the same in person as in text, but, as anna says, it is often difficult to judge yourself, and only others can judge that perhaps. on a couple occasions i have found myself typing things i dont think i would say in person, but not very often.

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan never showers, so in real life he's all musty and shit. It's nasty.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(I'm suddenly worried that there isn't as large a difference between my real-life persona and my online persona as I thought.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

thinking abt how and why i post here has shed a not too flattering light on my rl person, actually.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Who told you, Dan?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(xpost) that's not a 'fuck ilx' post either! i mean, you see yourself laid out, all the tics and repetitions. what's ommitted is more damning.

typo acapulco (gcannon), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm way more drunk in real life.

hstencil, Monday, 17 November 2003 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

andrew, it's not like that at all and you know it.

It's exactly like that. Unless there's no question that you would not answer on ILX (or there's a question that would never get asked, which seems unlikely), your ILX-self is a filter for you.

There are also other filters in place on ILX, many of them listed on this thread.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless there's no question that you would not answer on ILX (or there's a question that would never get asked, which seems unlikely), your ILX-self is a filter for you.

How are real-life interactions any different? There are parts of my inner self that I don't reveal in person either.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm must nastier in real life.

yeah.. bryan is really mean in real life. i was shocked

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Bryan is a lovely man in real life!

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm getting my appetite back.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

In real life I don't call up all my friends when I'm drunk and tell them stupid shit that I later regret. Or at least not that often.

I am also taller in real life.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

jody correct. at no point is your personality 'real' in life. its surely modified for social behaviour, in a variety of different ways, which are different for everyone. but there is no 'real' default setting. and even if there were, it could only exist in a vaccuum, it would get corrupted with any interaction of any form

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, but mean! again, not meant as an insult. being mean is kind of charming, i thought.

(xp)

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

There are parts of inner self that I don't reveal in person either.

Of course. But we were discussing whether Ally was the ILXer with a carefully constructed (online) persona. I don't see how she is more than anyone else.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth, that's not the point of the question. I'm the person who brought up "the real you" and it was in sarcasm quotes.

phil, you actually have a point--he's delightful but yes, he has quite cutting things to say. Like a good sitcom star!!

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't say "the."

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard that Bryan broke two of Tom's ribs! And then escaped:

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew, it's not worth your time any more than jbr is worth my time. This is her persona, let her at it and don't ruin the thread for everyone else.

xpost.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, I'm actually a mean Mr. Peanut irl and on ilx.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

IRL i dance like this.

kephm, Monday, 17 November 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i'm being perfectly level-headed and rational here. wasn't aware that i was ruining any threads.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 November 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"She can skin up"

What does this mean, Anna?

I agree with Ally's first statement about Gareth.

it means when we bring you stoats you will take the fur off, mary

i am quite playful with my personality on-line, bcz i am on the run from the law on twelve star systems

Orm Dawnie Prime (mark s), Monday, 17 November 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i am basically the same, although probably more obnoxious and loud in real life. oh, and surrounded by a highly intimidating posse.

Emilymv (Emilymv), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like it when, for instance, Ally does something that doesn't fit with the cartoon nature of her persona. It's that extra dimension that makes me sure I'll also like her IRL, if/when.

As for me, I don't know. A couple of times at FAPs someone has reacted to my saying something negative or aggressive or whatever about someone as if I'm stepping out of character by not being affable enough, which I guess is a product of thinking twice before hitting submit, and disproportionately deleting those things that might be or seem nasty, and aren't really warranted. I occasionally attack someone, but I am loathe to do so unless it seems thoroughly deserved. I guess it makes sense therefore that I'm seen as a little more easygoing and lacking in edge than IRL. I don't think it's a big difference, really.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I've met Amateurist, and he's probably much more conciliatory than he seems here, but then again, before meeting him, I never thought that he was all that intimidating, as (I think) some have.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently Martin is grittier IRL. ;-)

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Forgot the scare quotes around grittier.

Ha! I am almost cripplingly shy

-- @d@ml

You are def selling youself short there, @d@m (whhoops! No pun intended). You weren't a conversational black hole in any way when I met you; in fact, you were quite charming & polite.

What is the thing about ppl claiming themselves as shy (as I do IRL but make a concsious effort to dispel), when at FAPs and such they are at most somewhat reserved but otherwise fairly in the thick of things.

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

More true than perhaps you realize, Jody.

Blame the Mai Tais at the Tonga Room, Leee.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Also-being an Englishman around Americans always makes me feel..I dunno, "reserved"? "dull"? Plus I always have to repeat myself when I ask for a glass of "water".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe you shouldn't use quotes when you say it.

you're right about not seeming English on-board. I didn't know you were until fairly recently.

oops (Oops), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

waaaaaarrrr-tuh

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't imagine adam being 'dull'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's very nice of you to say so. Especially after I had to assert that I may be taller than you upthread.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

well that's why i apparently insult everybody. to make up for the fact I'm short ;)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's interesting that all of the people I've met from the online world, in the real world have been pretty much dissimilar to what their online personas have shown them to be. I met this one woman whom I was convinced would be this polite and very genteel Suthuhn woman, but when I met her I found out she was loud and bawdy and passionate and hilarious. Another woman I thought who would be outgoing was actually a bit more quiet than I figured she'd be.

I have no idea how I come across online, but I've been told I'm quite nice IRL. I don't think I'd be as talkative as I might seem in person unless I was really comfortable with you. I tend to really feel awkward with people unless I know them really well, e.g. I've been chatting with them online for a rather long while or they happen to be relatives I've seen at numerous family gatherings. When I feel awkward, I don't dare even say more than just a few words, even though I do try to be as polite as possible to everyone I run across. But once I do feel comfortable with someone, I can be a bit on the outgoing side.

But that's just supposition and pure guessing. The most I've gotten from someone I've met from the online world has been that I've been "really nice". And I have no idea how I come across. I try to stick to as close to my "real" self as I can be, and perhaps my "real" me might not even come across as neurotic because when I'm out and actually doing things, I really don't think about the things that disturb me. I suppose I'll have to wait until next April to start to meet you guys so you can get a better picture of what I'm talking about.

good point, ally, i wasnt really responding to that as such, i was sort of speaking in general, partially because i had meant to say something very similar on an unrelated thread, but forgot.

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like everyone much more in person!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

So you hate us online?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha gareth's last post is exactly what I'm talking about, you are not half so like that in real life! Maybe you are but it is I who am confused. But sometimes you sound like a giant hippie on ILX! A hippie with guns and a Blythe doll.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

He hates Blythe :( He would fine if only he loved Blythe.

Mary (Mary), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I definitely like everyone much more in person. Either you are all very charming or I am just not that enamored of the computer.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't the foggiest, in regards to either question. They're probably not that different though.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Some people are better in person. Some people are not. But this is like all things really.

Allyzay, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I generally find a certain accountability and reaction in people's physical presences that pleases. But I suppose the absences would be even more unpleasant IRL, so Allzay OTM upon reflection.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I am far quieter and come across substantially as more intelligent (not difficult) IRL. however i still make as many crap "jokes".

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

felicity-after your "patting the forest" post one can only wonder. : P

xppost

kephm, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Petting, dear kephm, not "patting." A forest-petter I may be but I did not pat anyone's forest. Very very different.

felicity (felicity), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

on ILX I'm the guy who tells you all how it fucking is and that you need to shape that shit up pronto and quit being such an irresponsible prat with your snooty judgements of everybody with more money than you.

IRL I'm the guy who buys everybody drinks and does glowstick routines with empty bottles until the bouncer throws me out.

TOMBOT, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Allyzay is totally OFF the money because she is, in fact, Prince.

Garibaldi, Monday, 17 November 2003 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

really now -- i'm not much different IRL than i think that i am here. maybe a little more reserved and quiet (until i get to know folx).

to know me is ... to know me. and i do kinda look like dieter from sprockets.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

OBVIOUSLY IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH PATTING FELICITY'S FOREST, DUH!!!

Didn't I just read somewhere that you look like Deiter? You can't be both.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 November 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, you were about what I thought you'd be in person. I always knew you were a delightful combination of crazyman and gentleman. You were very nice to me when I was down there (I'm still living under the assumption that you didn't mean to crack my ribs and I hold no grudge against you). Only a couple of people that I met down there really surprised me.

Bryan's post totally wins this thread, except for that great Anthony post, "I always knew you'd be a great guy, except for that one time you broke my ribs, asshat"

Allyzay, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I'm just imagining Bryan keeled over, gasping "I hold no grudge against you...I hold no grudge!" Hey, I just remembered that Millar's been a great guy except for that time when he slapped me! And I can't even remember why he did! I think I said I didn't feel like dancing and he mistook it for me saying that the song playing wasn't danceable.

God what an asshat.
