TS:Quizno's vs Subway

I don't know. Quizno's has a soup deal n' all, but a lousy name and ?uestion mark motif. Subway has Jared (who some friends of mine know-they say he is a rich asshole! always was!).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

both, please.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's is an awesome name!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the Scottish equivalent RJG? Ikea?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's is a silly, silly name. It sounds like a nickname for someone who always has their "nose" buried in "quiz" books n such.

Subway sounds punk.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been to america but we have subways in scotland. they're trying to rebrand the glasgow underground, actually.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

don't ever go to subways next to gas stations. maybe next to subways would be a different story.

youn, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"The Glagow Underground" sounds like some kind of citizen's militia.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I poop too much.

Labia, Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

is this question some kind of sick joke?

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

someone actually tried to tell me that they call it 'the metro'.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

is this question some kind of sick joke?

The one I'm asking or the one you're asking?

Everything's a sick joke with me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

in philadelphia the mayor has formed a special task force to beat anyone who patronizes either

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"compassionate sandwichery"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer jimmy john's.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Philly sounds fucking brutal. I hear it's full of neon.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, sam katz lost the election due to his controversial campaign to rename it "bartertown"

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@m, there are many excellent delis in your hood, don't neglect them!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

quizno's is ass. The sandwiches are gross and messy and I always feel nasty after I eat them.

Subway's boring but tolerable. especially if you get jalapenos on your sandwiches.

we don't have delis in texas.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the "hood" I live in, gygax, or the one I work in?

I've got a weird affection for Market St. Is that bad?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

But now I see - this is some kind of rockist sandwich thing, right? ;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The worst deli I have ever been to is University Ave in B-Town.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I walk past a Subway, it smells like rotten iceberg lettuce. I've come to associate that smell with the place and it always makes me sick.

Quiznos is okay.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

sandwiches are one of the few areas i am totally rockist about

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

a bad sandwich inches me that ever closer to suicide

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

we have California Subs in Western Canada

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel that way about shitty coffee. People that make it/propagate its production should be rounded up and beaten.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

same here, mostly, but then i live in a city where i have hundreds of different rockist sandwich options.

(xpost x 3)

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

does iceberg lettuce have a smell?

I am rockist about salsa. Anyone who eats Pace should be shot.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, i have a feeling those who live in the mid-atlantic should not bother answering this thread

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

does iceberg lettuce have a smell?

it does when it rots!

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i want a sandwich

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you know that gluten is practically indigestible?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll never eat subway again after seeing a dateline special on health regulations. mice turds hanging out in the meat holders.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i'll never eat at subway for a lot of reasons but after hearing all of the horror stories from when ethan worked there, especially.

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i just ate a salmon salad sandwich from the cafeteria.

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i've sworn off fast food joints since sunday night. my fat gut will love me.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's looks like it should be good but their sandwiches were gross every time I tried to eat them. I ate Subway almost every day for a year and a half when I worked in Brisbane and grew numb to it. They would actually make them well if they knew you. But I haven't had one since I stopped working there.

The best sandwich shop around you Adam is Specialty's, ask someone where one is. There's one on Mission and 1st or something.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Subway. It's cheaper than Quizno's by far (12" veggie sandwich + a bag pretzels < $5.00), and seems healthier in the way that unmelted cheese seems healthier than melted cheese, even though there is actually no difference! I only eat there occasionally because it's a block away from where I work, though. Otherwise, I never eat at fast-food chains. (Taquerias and falafel joints, on the other hand...)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

c/d: not eating "fast food" while eating at local quick crap joints

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Kyle, I've actually gotten to be quite friendly with the eastern Europeans who work at the Subway where I eat. Whenever my beard gets too bushy, the Russian woman who runs the place chuckles and calls me "Karl Marx."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

They are both dumb. A new Subway opened down the street from my work and I went there a few times until I felt gross thinking about it. It doesn't help that if you are a vegetarian, you've got two options: the veggie sandwich (also known as the rotten iceburg lettuce sandwich) or the VEGGIEMAX (TM) sandwich, which is essentially a veggie burger in a sub roll, and is kind of good, but they never microwave it long enough so it's always cold in the middle and grosses you out. Blergh. It hurts my guts just to think about it.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

do they have computers in the mid-atlantic?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea of a fast food chain that makes deli sandwiches baffles me. Delis already do make "fast food."

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

we make it ffffffaster!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

There aren't always delis around though.

(xpost again!)

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

NA: Hmmm. They call that VEGGIEMAX sandwich the "Garden Patty" in Chicago. I never get it. After they microwave it, it's really oily. And it's oddly spicy. And it's a dollar more than the regular veggie sandwich. (Yeah, I'm cheap.)

Re: "rotting iceberg lettuce sandwich": The cute Bulgarian woman knows to stuff my veggie sub with tomatoes, cucumbers, and green peppers.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, what Jody said! If there was a deli around here, I'd go there all the time!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

There aren't always delis around though.

Like, Subway is a popular fixture at highway rest stops, in places where that's really the best (only?) store-bought deli sandwich around for a hundred miles.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

jimmy johns, or Potbelly ones

Jeremy the Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Order an Italian sub in Worcester, you get bologna on it. Since when is bologna italian.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't overstate how funny it was to walk into a Subway when I was 17, and ask for a six-inch spicy Italian. I'm sure you've all been there- it's like the first time you looked up "boring" in the Yellow Pages, right?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

since, like, nine hundred years ago?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Well yeah, at a highway rest stop you take what you get, but Subways also thrive in metropolitan areas where there should be no use for them.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, Jess, the operative word in my comment about "fast food" is "chains." I don't avoid fast food altogether, but I'd rather support local businesses for both moral reasons and because said local places are often more vegetarian-friendly. I'm also under the delusion that falafel is somewhat healthy, despite being deep-fried.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd never even seen a Quizno's until a few weeks ago; suddenly there's a dozen new ones just opened in SF. I doubt I'll ever try one. Because I'm just used to wanting to pronounce things that look like that with a Spanish pronounciation, I have a hard time thinking it's not said "keez-nose". I've gone on record before about the lack of good deli in SF. Re Specialties, their sandwiches are all big fat bread, and overpriced. When I worked downtown I usually went to Lee's, which wasn't very good but at least every sandwich is under $3.00.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I do like Jimmy John's. For the guacamole, mostly. And the bread.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i got my veggie with double cheese (double the plastic cheese! but I became oddly fond of it) and more peppers than lettuce. It was fine!

adam, where is the worst deli on University Ave?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's was all I ate when I arrived in SF and was living in a hotel in Chinatown. That and Briazz for breakfast!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Kyle- It's the really cheap one across from Mod Lang, slightly closer to Shattuck.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The chicken salad made me want to lick the sidewalk to get rid of the taste.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i know RJG.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

and you still ate it?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I always get the Swiss or provolone cheese at Subway. Many people don't know to ask for it.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

you mean most ppl BEG for it, right?

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

can't help it they put baloney...on everything.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's started off in Denver, so I feel as if I should side with them--however, their sandwiches in theory SHOULD be good; toasted, with good incredients.. but there's something about them THAT JUST ISN'T RIGHT. Too much drippy italian dressing for one.

Subway is boring, but okay.

There's another sandwich chain in Colorado called Silvermine Subs that beats them all and they make good stoner food because they will deliver subs to your house all night long.

Mandee (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Kyle- It's the really cheap one across from Mod Lang, slightly closer to Shattuck.

I hope you're not referring to the Brazilian sandwich stand in the paint store parking lot?!? His sandwiches are delicious -- the garlic cilantro sauce is amazing!

I'm not aware of any other deli-type anythings in the area, but you can't possibly be talking about this.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

No Kris-it's kind of a very narrow deli/diner - closer to the Krishna Copy Center!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I must try that Brazilian place.

And where's this "Cancun" taqueria that I have lately been hearing about? Someone said Addison or Allston or something?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My food crush of shame - I like Oscar's!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy John's vegetarian sub beats anything that Subway makes. I don't really trust their meat anyway.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Keith like I said there are no delis in Texas. Many places simply don't have them.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

quizno's is ass. The sandwiches are gross and messy and I always feel nasty after I eat them.
Subway's boring but tolerable. especially if you get jalapenos on your sandwiches.

we don't have delis in texas.

-- A Girl Named Sam (dallasdeadgir...), November 18th, 2003.

Girl!! There's always Schlotzky's! You ever been to New York Subs in Dallas? It beats the smack outta any other sandwich joint chain.

Subway has gotten better along the years, I think. I tend to get the same thing usually (turkey breast sub), 'cuc it's the best they got. Quizno's is interesting. Quality is very inconsistent. It tends to vary from locale to locale. They usually counteract the toastiness of the sammiches by making them all soggy, thus ruining them in the process.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

that isn't a deli! I don't know what it is but no-one aside from you has ever eaten in there. What were you thinking?

The brazilian guy terrifies me with his ever-increasing spread of bamboo and pink flamingos. For those who have not seen it: in the corner of a parking lot, what started as a normal juice stand has grown into some kind of adult child's fort, complete with tiki torches, an array of flags, and a banner proclaiming him "Entrepreneur of the Year!" I avoid him just because the concept of a Crunchy Tuna Sandwich makes me ill.

Cancun taqueria is on Allston b/w Shattuck and Oxford next to the gargantuan new apartment building.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, Subway... easily.

Quizno's eats ass. Overpriced, and their "default dressing" tastes like seasoned dish water with cornstarch mixed in. Why can't all places just use the simple oil & vinegar/salt & pepper like Subway, dammit?

Togo's sucks even more. Blander than blandy bland.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

that isn't a deli! I don't know what it is but no-one aside from you has ever eaten in there. What were you thinking?

WRONG. Crazy people and high school kids go there. And I am a little of both, in my own small way.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

It is a deli in that they have a choice of breads and fillings and such. And a selection of sodas.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Oscar's RULES!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you talking about the Makris cafe, run by the Korean couple? That's my favorite place to eat in Berkeley, but I've never had a sandwich there. The kimchee is amazing.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Schloltsky's is alright! though overpriced, their veggie sandwhich with the japaleno cheese bread roolz.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Kris-yes, I believe that is the place. Maybe sandwiches just aren't their thing.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on, if we're including local sandwich shops... Hillside Quickies in Seattle owns this thread. I mean, New York style Seitan Subs, Veggie Gyro Baskets, Tempehstrami Deluxe...

(sorry vegan hataz)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just discovered Tofutti.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

tofutti is tofuckingawful

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Tofutti Cuties? Tofutti TooToos? They are of the heavens (though kinda off thread topic though "sandwiches" they are... kinda)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's better than searing stomach pain.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Quizno's the first 5 times i had it, then I somehow became ultra-aware of its low-quality ingredients. Haven't eaten there for years.
Worked at Jimmy John's in college. Delivered a sandwich to Mr. John himself. Only got slightly sick of their sandwiches towards the end, and would still happily eat one.
Anybody been to Cheba Hut in Tempe, AZ. Slightly lame pot-related concept---the sandwiches are named KGB, Jamaican Red, Dank, etc.--but they're toasted a la Quizno's, much much tastier, and they'll deliver to your stoned ass, you fucking hippie.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm DEFINITELY making your card for that one, Blount

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Tofutti is delicious.

Makris has been around for like 20 years, but I think they only started selling sandwiches a few months ago.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Francis, I've never heard of NY Subs.

Schlotskey's is just another sandwich chain (albeit far superior) and not a true indpendant deli though.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

this thread depresses me

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I had no idea Makris was a deli! What are they playing at? I ate breakfast there once and it was alright, but I was hungover.

The Subway on Shattuck is particularly bad.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, def. Jimmy John's or Big Mike's, which around here is exactly the same.

The best local chain though is CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Awesome subs.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Quizno's IS ridiculously overpriced. But anyone ever had their chicken caesar salads? THEY'RE SOOOOO NIIIICE. Don't eat their breadsticks, however. THOSE are NASTY.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Sam, I didn't mean Texas, I didn't say ALL metro areas have delis, just that I'm bummed by the fact that Subways thrive in those areas that do. Like Jess said, this whole question should be a non-issue for anyone in the mid-Atlantic. Just like there shouldn't be an Olive Garden smack dab in the middle of Philadelphia.

Keith Harris (kharris1128), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, New York style Seitan Subs, Veggie Gyro Baskets, Tempehstrami Deluxe...

*Books plane ticket to Seattle*

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Schlotsky's roxors, as long as I remember to order their sandwiches WITHOUT mayo. (nb: I haven't eaten at one in probably two years.)

Is the Cosi chain going out of business? The one around here closed a few months ago.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Subway's boring but tolerable. especially if you get jalapenos on your sandwiches

Agreed. I eat there quite a bit because there's one very close to my work, it's cheap, and it makes me feel somewhat healthy. Every once in a while though, I get really grossed out from the repitition and can't go there for a few weeks.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

perhaps these sandwich chains are to deli sandwiches what taco bell is to mexican food . . .no relation at all.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

From other thread before I realized there were two:
Quiznos and Subway are both ok, but they have different strengths. Quiznos has the better meat and generally better tasting sub. Subway is cheaper and depending where you go, can have pretty good bread, if you like chewy white bread. However, I think I need to find a real sub place one of these days.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i am soooo hungry now.

i miss schlotsky's sooooo much. they had one near my college. mmmm

i was eating specialties every day for a while and always getting the #17 Turkey & Cranberry. kinda over them.

i was eating Quiznos every day for a while but i am totally over them. all their sandwhiches taste the same no matter what kind you get.

i can still eat Subway every day and i only get the Italian BMT. not sick of them at all.

i remember Potbelly from when i lived in Chicago. that was yummy.

there's a great place in central California called Eric's Deli that's pretty good.

now i work out in the middle of industrial hell and there's no where to eat at all. i'm stuck eating in the building's cafe every day. ack. bleh

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, did you get a job at v1rg1n? you're on market a lot lately?

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

JaXoN- no, but I am working between Market & Mission. You weren't down for The Rapture last week?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

That's as good a reason as any. Next time, maybe?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(jason - they weren't that good. It was worth it for the drinks and the company though)

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i deleted the message about gygax per his request on the "shouting for the moderator" thread. hope that's ok.

ethereal cereal (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ja><0n, email me when you get a chance.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

There ARE delis in Texas, Sam, sweetie!! Remember the Jason's Deli chain?! Those sandwiches are actually good, plus you get delish stuff such as muffalettas!!

The Subway close to campus always gets perfect 100 scores from the local health department, so I trust it, even though you can get some fairly nasty sandwiches there at times. I've never been to a Quizno's, though, even though there's one close to the house. However, I still say Jason's Deli over all.

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(Er, I meant alternative delis. You know, aside from the Subways and Quizno's places.)

Pancakes For Breakfast! (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

again Dee, that's a chain. I'm talking about what I guess the eastern folx are talking about. Real, independant delis.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I have just discovered Tofutti.

Quizno's kicks ass. The way I order things - no dressings or sauces - it's not messy, it's nice and toasted, and it tastes better than Subway.

I tried a sandwich shop that just opened near my house - Roly Poly's. Like a regular sandwich shop, only they roll everything up like a burrito. Not as good as Quizno's, better than Subway (but what isn't?).

I hates Subway

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Po-boy shops in the hood are the way to go in New Orleans, especially the one down the street from me that serves breakfast. Pork chop, egg and cheese with mayo on French is the greatest meal ever, especially if one gets a 32oz Busch, a sweet potato Hubig's Pie and a pack of cigarettes to go with.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Quizno's is sketchy. Subway is bland. Always. No matter how many "specialty sauces" you have them lather on your sandwich it's gonna taste the same. Also destroy the post-Jared ad campaign with the twins.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh come on. I love the scene where the twins uncle says something like "anytime they came over I'd be getting the wife to hide the cakes!"

until they take the subway diet, that is.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Subway. I eat it once a week on average, mainly because there is one a short walk away from me. 12 inch Veggie Delight for $3.83 is pretty good by me. Plus, for whatever strange reason they have really good giardiniera and they really slather it on. I could go for one right now, I think.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I forgot to mention I've never even had Quizno's. I think it must have relatively recently made it to Chicago, or else I just never noticed. Anyway, there commercials are incredibly annoying so I think I'm going to boycott them.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Quizno's better simply for the novelty value--i.e. they aren't Subway. I'll eat both, though, w/o kidding myself that either are really that good. Also Tofutti Cuties ROXOR.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Tofutti Cuties ROXOR.

Wow, more ILXers agree on this issue than anything else. The tofutti guilt thread cannot be far away...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:17 (twenty-one years ago)

what guilt?!

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:19 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry...

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 04:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, for whatever strange reason they have really good giardiniera and they really slather it on.

Man. I got cursed with working close to the only Subway in the Chicago area that doesn't offer giardiniera. (My brother doesn't even know how I can eat Subway without it.) I'm gonna have a word with those eastern Europeans one of these days.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You can talk to me, if you like. I'm from Ukrainian/Polish/Lithuanian ancestry.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Giardiniera you say? At Subway? I haven't eaten there in years, like before I liked lettuce and mayo and whatnot and sandwiches. (My sister still makes fun of me foralways ordering a Cold Cut Combo w/just the meat, bread, and cheese: "you can make that at home!")
I may have to swing by there soon. What do sandwich do you get with giardiera on it, jaymc? Or is the question what DON'T you get with it on?

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 19 November 2003 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Why Quizno's is good: chicken carbonara sub. While waiting for it to be toasted, walk over to the condiment counter and fill plastic Dixie cup to near overflowing with pepperoncinis. Eat.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I can use my staff pass to fool Quizno's into thinking that I'm a student here, and then they give me all kinds of free shit. Classic.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 9 December 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

They got student discounts???!

I actually prefer Erik's Delicafe, however. Cheaper, fresher and num!

Tweee Iacocca (Leee), Thursday, 11 December 2003 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's is totally for shit. They charge way too much and their sandwiches always come out far too soggy for my taste.

Subway can be hit or miss, the franchises aren't very consistent, but the one right by the office building I'm currently working in in northern VA is fucking excellent. I had the Southwestern Chipotle Cheesesteak today and it was very good, they put on lots of big jalapeños and it made me happy.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom, I have to say, I had that same sandwich and almost barfed. The meat is awful... Maybe it's different on the west coast?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 11 December 2003 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

that sandwich tastes different everytime i have it!

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 11 December 2003 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

like I said, the way subway runs their franchises is pretty hit or miss in my experience. The one right down the road from my office is run by these nice Korean ladies though and they appear to have their shit down.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 11 December 2003 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The one by me is really good too but that could just be because the weird guys that work in there give me a lot of extra shit cos they keep asking me out. I've never been to Quizno's cos it has a dumb name.

Allyzay, Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's wins out even though their stuff's a bit more expensive and they use the whole "toasted" thing as a main selling point.

I hate the whole "what do you want on that?" thing that they have going on at Subway where you're expected to choose between a combination of 15 different toppings for your order.

Uhm..

Like c'mon. You're the f'ing "sandwich artist." Put whatever you think works best on there. If I'm going to get a rotten sandwich I want it to be your fault, not mine. What do I know about this stuff, anyway? I don't make freaking sandwiches for a living so just go town with it.

Even with that stupid outfit, I trust you with my sandwich options. Screw the whole democratic process and just force me to eat what you think I need, dammit!

may pang (maypang), Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kind of agreeing with this right now because my own sandwich making skills have lead me to eat a sandwich consisting of potato bread, tons of sliced jalepenos, and hot sauce tonight and quite frankly I feel neither clever nor big for choosing exactly what I wanted on my sandwich.

Allyzay, Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The best local chain though is CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Awesome subs.

-- Jordan (jordancohe...), November 18th, 2003 1:06 PM.

I'd forgotten about this place! They're pretty good, but I think they put too much lettuce on their subs sometimes. Jimmy John's is better for ingredient distribution.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 11 December 2003 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

four weeks pass...
I am turning into Jared. I have also mastered the art of ordering 6 sandwiches at a time since I have been turned into lunch gopher amongst the work group (this should change soon as we will no longer be at this location).

Subway's prices for 12" sandwiches cannot be beat. Seriously it's a massive amount of food and you pay like $7 tops, I wish they had had a subway near my last job, oh well.

For cold subs I find that the BMT and the Seafood are about neck-and-neck depending on what I want that day. I could probably eat either one daily for about 6 months and not bitch about it.

Among the hot subs I find the Subway Melt wins out easy, especially with lots of jalapenos and olives and horseradish sauce. My post-lunch breath is of no concern obviously.

the Chicken Pizziola is pretty disappointing since they use that same "marinara" sauce that goes on everything else, too sweet for my tastes and they microwave the whole sandwich at once which causes soggy bun (No. 1 reason I utterly hate Quizno's).

The SW Cheesesteak is kind of rub after a couple more tries, the chipotle sauce is weak after trying the Dijon Horseradish Melt just once.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Also note that all of their prices with tax included total out to flat dollar amounts? I am impressed by this and wonder why more dining establishments don't do this, I mean WTF with all these damn pennies you are trying to hand me, stupid whore, I don't need any of your fucking pennies, my desk at home is covered with them and I have a plastic cup in my car that's overflowing already, fuck you!

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's toasty subs are the bomb, especially the turkey/bacon/guacomole, a surprisingly great combination.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom I'm guessing it's because local taxes vary and most national chains can't be bothered to adjust their pricing schemes to each locale. But then that means that all local, non-national stores SHOULD do their pricing that way and are simply twunts for not.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone tried the new "Atkins Friendly" wrap? I was going to try it, but they only do six inch, and I'd have to buy two!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's largely because most places still obey the "everything ends with .99" instinct as opposed to the more rational science of "we are not going to bother with any fucking goddamned pennies or nickels ok."

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

True, which is stupid cause they could have stuff be, say, $3.93 or whatever, having it come out $4 even and still benefit from the 'hey look it's under 4 bucks' illusion.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I looked at the wraps, Spencer, and then I looked at the italian herbs and cheese bread, and the parmesan oregano bread, and I said to myself, I want a foot of that bread, I have no time for this atkins crap.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a whole bunch of Subway gift certificates for X-Mas!! It's all I can do to not go eat it every day now.

Yeah, the price can't be beat, but mine doesn't do the round number thing. A foot-long Veggie Delight is $3.83. My solution (anytime I leave the house for anything) is to always bring at least 4 pennies with me. I still have tons of the bastards though.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

foot long veggie = 3.83?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup!

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Believe me, I've got that shit memorized. Also, do you guys do the stamp thing?

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

We have no 'stamp thing' out here. Haha I once ordered the veggie delight instead of the veggie patty for one of my coworkers. She was quite unhappy. I would have been too.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, "salad sandwich" isn't boring & gross because the like, 4 slices of coldcuts they put on add $1 minimum to the price, and I make them load it up with so many hot & banana peppers and giardiniera that I would never taste the meat anyway (btw, I am NOT a vegetarian).

"stamp thing" = you get 1 stamp for a 6 inch, 2 stamps for a foot-long. Collect 8 stamps and you get a 'free' 6 inch with the purchase of a medium drink.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I ate at Quiznos my first day in Chicago (not my choice) and it kicked Subway's ass. It actually tasted like food for one thing.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Quizno's the first 5 times i had it, then I somehow became ultra-aware of its low-quality ingredients. Haven't eaten there for years.

That's me from upthread, Nick.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I don't plan to eat there a lot. Plus, I'm vegetarian, so there's only like two sandwiches I can eat. But I like that they offer a grilled cheese sandwich in addition to the standard "let's just cram all of our vegetables in there" sandwich that Subway has too. Subway has the Veggie Max/Veggie Pattie sandwich, but they never heat it long enough and it's always still cold in the middle. Just thinking about it makes me vomit a little.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 8 January 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

This makes me miss the sammich place I used to work for that had a veggie sammich where we melted 4 kinds of cheese with an asston of slivered almonds up in that shit and then put all the veggies and shit in. Thems was good. And surprisingly popular.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

They are both gross but edible. The meatball at Subway is nasty but good. Quizno's acts like it's better quality, but it really is shit if you examine it. Subways stink and Quizno's has better specials. But Subway has better cookies.

Star Hustler, Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a Quizno's on the block next to me now. And I got a $2.00 off coupon in the mail. I"m still scared to go though.

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

the subway veggie patties scare the hell out of me. they look wrong. a subway just opened up a few doors down form my apt. i was there last saturday at 10am in my parka and slippers. other than fresh vegetables i prefer the local sub shops with the dusty old arcade games in the corner

kephm, Thursday, 8 January 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

they microwave the whole sandwich at once which causes soggy bun (No. 1 reason I utterly hate Quizno's).

All the Quizno's around here have a little conveyor belt oven thing for sandwiches. That's what makes them better than Subway. (No matter how bad Subway gets, I don't understand why anyone would rather have a McGreasyShit than a sandwich.)

I'm digging Schlotzky's new Angus Steak and Provolone sandwich.

Bryan (Bryan), Saturday, 7 February 2004 07:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Quizno's toasts their buns and they have soup. They win. The folks at Subway are always asking difficult questions like, "what would you like on that?" Just shut up and make the damned sandwich.

And I prefer the man suckling on his wolf-mother's teet to anything "Jared" has ever done.

Salmon Pink (Salmon Pink), Saturday, 7 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Togo's

Aja (aja), Saturday, 7 February 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man, the meatball sammich is U&K in my hoagie/sub patronage. Here's my heirarchy:

1) Davanni's. Local Twin Cities chain; best bread ever and both their meatball and turkey sandwiches slay six ways from Sunday; they use this super-buttery garlic bread for the sandwiches that is just murderous. Not too costly, either. More of a pizza/hoagie place so they might not really count.

2) Jimmy John's. Corny decor, but they deliver. The Beach Club is my #1 vice as far as that place goes. Guacamole + Turkey = Nate is Happy.

3) Subway. Mostly nostalgic reasons, as I'd go there before/after seeing a movie at the two-screen super-old-skool Grandview theater right down the block. Again, good mostly for their meatball sandwiches.

4) Quizno's. Went there once during my 45-minute work break. Bread was OK, but the meatballs were half-cooked and kinda cold, and I didn't like the sauce too much -- too much seasoning, not enough tomatoness/meatiness. Seemed a bit gloopy. But it's the only actual restaurant within a reasonable distance of the office building I work (I have an afternoon/evening shift and therefore cannot take advantage of the office cafeteria; vending machines offer little more than Pop-Tarts for sustenance; I hate brown-bagging due to super-limited refrigerator space) so I guess I'm stuck.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Saturday, 7 February 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

(big prob. with Davanni's: their circle of delivery influence does not extend to my apartment. BOO TO THAT.)

Bryan I hadn't seen it. And I thank you.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 8 February 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

As controversial as this may be, I had no problems with the guy at Blimpie, ever. Why aren't we bringing them into the mix (b/c let's face it, Blimpie is just as assy a name for a sub franchise as Quizno's, really...)

When I want a toasted sandwich, I go to this little whole in the wall Chinese place on the west side of Kearny between Sac. and Commercial. It's cheap and they're charming. Subway's bread is so wrong, it's a crime. Quiznos is OK but I am not going to walk that far to go to a chain restaurant and wait in line.
