Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

'Leftist'. Y'know, the opposite of a 'rightist'.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the stereotypes in the second one are appalling.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The last one's saying that to leftits the holocaust counts for nought, is insignifigant. So by that logic, shouldn't Bush's own 'holocaust' in Iraq be ignored by them, as he's their modern Hitler? I dunno it's completely fucking moronic either way. It's all about caricaturing people and their views, which is what all propoganda does (not all cartoons though).

Really my favorite political cartoon is the heart-annihilating "beloved newly-dead person greeted by St. Peter at the pearly gates" one. Gets me every time.

The Momma Miss America one puzzles me: she's left a slice of democracy in the fridge for a baby who can't even walk, wtf?

Gay men have not worn sweaters around their neck with plaid pants since, like, always.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Saturday, 10 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. As perhaps one of the most conservative members of this forum, if not the most, even I'm a bit taken aback by some of these, particularly the one concerning AIDS (which seems filled with nothing but half truths and therefore is rather misleading IMHO). Having said that, I did quite adore # 3, so I suppose my Conservatives USA membership card is still valid. ;)

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 10 January 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

which seems filled with nothing but half truths and therefore is rather misleading IMHO

Actually, now that I think about it, that would be a bit of an understatement. In reality, that cartoon is filled with the singular half truth and a whole bunch of hogwash. There. That's better.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 10 January 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, and with the exception of the one equating liberalism w/ holocaust revisionism, that third cartoon is the most offensive of the lot and comes really close to being downright racist. the guy's saying that iraqis are little children who have to be tended to by "mommy america."

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

But to go back to Michaels point, Momma America really is trying to "leave a slice of democracy in the fridge" and bugger off, which is closer to the mark than they probably meant, haha.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not contradicting my argument, trayce.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't view the cartoon in that manner. I viewed the usage of the "baby" symbol in reference to Iraq as a visual means of demonstrating that the new system of government over in Iraq is still in its infancy, not that Iraqis themselves are infantile. And I took the statement "I left a slice of democracy in the fridge" as something that references the fact (or belief, if you will) that Americans aren't going to be there to colonize the country, but rather to set up this whole new governmental framework and then, when the structure is stable, leave it completely an Iraqi operation.

Tenacious Dee (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I Love Exposing Internal Biases About Other People's Viewpoints

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 10 January 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i'm not trying to play trife/padgett games here. nor am i accusing you of being racist, dee. all the same, i don't think that yer view works b/c of the "suzie sarandon doll" -- you know, influencing the infant iraqi. granted, it could be more subtle than i'm seeing (e.g., the infant iraqi as the infant iraqi government) -- but that presumes a level of subtlety that i'm not seeing in that or any other of this guy's cartoons. and frankly, i'm not willing to give this guy the benefit of the doubt.

What exactly does "liberal" mean in America, then?
both 'Liberal' and 'Conservative' have been overused incorrectly by ninnies for so long that it means absolutely nothing
Sometimes, I wish I carried a solid iron cricket bat with several huge rusty spikes jutting from it. And anytime some wingnut used "Liberal" as a noun, I could cluestick them upside their pointy little head.
"It's not a Noun, Fucknugget! 'Liberal' is (THWACK!) a mutha- (THWACK!) fuckin' (THWACK!) descriptor (THWACK!) it modifies a (THWACK!) Noun. A person (THWACK!) can't be a 'Liberal' (THWACK!) or a 'Conservative' for the same (THWACK!) goddamned (THWACK!) reason (THWACK!) they (THWACK!) can't (THWACK!) be a
'Begrudginly'!"
So, to recap: both 'Liberal' and 'Conservative' have been overused incorrectly by ninnies for so long that it means absolutely nothing.
Political debates might as well be a bunch of fat white guys complaining about opressive unicorns and bleeding hearted hobbits.

(Public Service Announcement: The 'Cluestick' portion of this post was made possible through grants from the Committee to End Public Violence.)

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 10 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

pete s, Saturday, 10 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

They have plainly become nouns by use - this has been true for a long time. The language isn't some static thing that you can freeze.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 10 January 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

So why does the star of David symbolize the holocaust, anyways?

sym (shmuel), Sunday, 11 January 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

They have plainly become nouns by use - this has been true for a long time.
I know that the eeeevil fucknuggets out there use it as a noun. I'm insisting that they Shouldn't. Not merely for grammatical reasons, but because by doing so, they took two perfectly useful and somewhat specific words (both which could be used as a nonpartisan descriptor) into a pair of empty, vague pseudo-labels that can only be used as an insult.
By doing so, the eeeevil fucknuggets took away two perfectly useful words and replaced them with divisive, distancing slurs. A blunt tool used by unsubtle partians who are incapable of dealing with a complex reality.
In a way, its like how the Soviets overused the word "Bourgeois" until it could apply to anything while actually meaning nothing.
The next time you hear Rush "The Oxycontin Kid" Limbaugh bitch about liberals, just realize that you could replace every istance of the word "Liberal" in his shpiel with the word "Strawman" and all it would do is make his speech much more honest.

Anyhow, I should just find that photo I took on my last trip down to Atlantic city. It showed two billboards roughly 100 yards apart. One boasted "The most liberal slots in Jersey" and the the other boasted "Our slots are the most conservative in Atlantic City"....
...and both boasts mean exactly the same thing.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Sunday, 11 January 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying that it's a good thing that they are nouns now, I'm saying that they are nouns now, and you're stuck with it. You're fighting a battle lost long ago.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 11 January 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

As an overweight homosexual squid, I'm offended.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what's amazing here is the undisguised racism wr2 arabs and muslims and the unabashed homophobia in these cartoons. it's the last refuge for people who you KNOW would be drawing demeaning pics of blacks and jews if they could get away with it.

That was the only Farrington one that really stuck out, for me.

He seems to be very keen on the whole 18th Century style labelling of symbols DO YOU SEE?? thing, which I am amazed cartoonists persevere with.

%%, Tuesday, 13 January 2004 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always disliked the way that Steve Bell adds "feeling good about being smart enough to understand the cartoon" to the standard "feeling good about reading something you agree with". I don't know why: I don't in general hate smart fun, but something about him rubs me up the wrong way. Perhaps the fact that he has "characters" means that what was once a funny joke looks childish the tenth time you see it.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 13 January 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Democracy in the fridge would be better if they dropped what the 'baby iraq' was saying. The best ones stylistically are the terrorist praying the wrong way and the Saddam with the Dean t-shirt on.

That's funny, because I went for two whole threads of this shit thinking that %% was making fun of the cartoons he was posting. Seriously, in every single case -- "PLZ KILL ABORTIONISTS" or "the dumbocrats and their smellfare program" or "OMG AIDS CURES FAGS" or "DEMS ARE FULL OF PEE" == I was convinced wholeheartedly that he was taking the proverbial piss. I could not imagine otherwise. Now that I understand that he was serious in his commentary, I think I may hate him more than any other person who has ever posted here.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 14 January 2004 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

But wait... Several minutes later, I fear the joke may be on me. %% is just a comic foil, right? He couldn't possibly be both dense enough to say those things in seriousness and stupid enough to post them here, could he? This guy could NOT be for real, right? I mean, really. "The dumbocrats and their smellfare program." That's just gotta be a joke. "OMG AIDS CURES FAGS" is even phrased like a joke, utilizing online ironic jargon and everything. The person who swallows all this wholesale doesn't really exist, does he? Have I missed something?

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

xposts The pundit one reminds me of what Rush Limbaugh sometimes does - he'll play a perfectly-reasonable-sounding clip from a major Democrat and then just not offer commentary other than a couple of sarcastic "Yeah" type utterances, as if "that says it all."

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 26 October 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

The little pokemon/pacman guy is like the 3rd main character of the book. he just kinda wanders around thru the story. the opening pages show him enjoying a nice day in NYC when these guys start crashing airplanes into the WTC.

The main characters of the book are two chicks who kinda jaunt thru the geopolitical landscape sucking off various national leaders, raping others, etc..

seriously, you don't see much really hardcore hentai manga involving 9/11, the Wright Brothers, or one of the main character fucking both Dubya and Saddam at once.

Does anybody have the torrent or the YSI for the book? Seriously, like every page is the gift that keeps on giving.

this is more WTF than really anti-lib, but

http://media.salemwebnetwork.com/TownHall/Car/b/bg0814j.jpg

two things:

1. why is "mideast violence" being represented by a Browning Automatic Rifle, a weapon traditionally associated with U.S. and other Allied forces until the Korean War?

2. apparently, just a cork in the barrel is all the ceasefire is. Is this supposed to show how pussy that the ceasefire is? Does this guy even know what'll happen if you try to fire a rifle with the barrel jammed up? Did he never see "Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade," or any number of Elmer Fudd/Daffy Duck/Bugs Bunny cartoons?

kingfish trapped under ice (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 17 August 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

i think it is supposed to show that the ceasefire is ineffectual.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

That Dem donkey looks damn reluctant to have nukes strapped to its ass.

That anti-Ted Rall comic is ok w/me, Rall is a dick w/a weird vendetta against Art Spiegelman of all people, possibly because Spiegelman knows how to draw something besides crude triangles.

Abbott (Abbott), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

So confusing. So do the Republicans who laugh at the 'Draft Dodger' one include the likes of Bush and Cheney in their derision? Do they pause and consider John Kerry's service as an actual soldier in Vietnam (conveninetly dismissed with some Swift Boat nonsense, but still)? Argh, this thread is slowly killing me.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

John Kerry is seen as an illegitimate authority, and therefore is attacked by these folks.
