Did anyone else even watch the season premiere last night? I am ashamed to admit I did.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched that THEN I watched "My Big Fat Disgusting Fake Husband" right after!

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Which was better?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched that THEN I watched "My Big Fat Disgusting Fake Husband" right after!

I didn't even watch that one, and I consider myself to be a reality television junkie whore lately.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They both had a certain...je ne sais quoi.

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

There was nothing on either that I can't find right here on ILX.

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Scooter girl reminded me of a certain ilxor.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm...

the Eskibox (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Scooter girl reminded me of a certain ilxor.

I'm flattered! Or should I be?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I was REALLY into the premiere, and now I'm sorta into the second episode.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched it last night and tonight. And I'll keep watching until the auditions are finished and it becomes boring.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Totally.

If Simon & the other dude hadn't been such asshats Paula Abdul woulda totally did it with that blonde kid.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 05:37 (twenty-two years ago)

nick is OTM.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

They haven't done LA yet have they? Some friends of mine who live out there auditioned, and I want to see if they get aired.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

AI still keeps it interesting with its snarky attitude. I LOVED it when Simon bet that one contestant she couldn't sing in a bar without clearing out half the patrons, and how they proceeded to show her doing exactly that. I also thought the 9-cell split screen with all those contestants mangling the same song was good, last night.

Still, I really hope there are some better performers than what we've seen so far, of those that make it to Hollywood. I think the only guy I've liked was the good-looking dark-haired white guy on Monday's show.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This had nothing on the two episodes of Bands Reunited we watched last night, but I'm sure we'll watch it through the end.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they specifically showed as few of the good auditions/folx who went on to the next round as possible last night. Givin' us what we want aw yeah.

I think that one choreographer dude that sang "America, America" was totally robbed though. He really was good.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

San Francisco next! represent!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 January 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

That one woman they accused of being too "cabaret" was A) not cabaret at all, B) a damned fine (if a bit nasal) singer. The midget girl was hot. The girl with the squeaky speaking voice/surprisingly-robust singing voice that, when asked what she would do with the million bucks, was prob'ly my favorite so far. The guy right after her had a shitty attitude and deserved to get kicked out, even though he had a decent voice.

I really wish I didn't enjoy this show so much.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

dur hur

"when asked what she would do with the million bucks replied that she would buy a pink thunderbird..."

dur hur

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you see your friends?

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i loved that Hong guy. if i were simon and the judges i would insist that he sing and dance every song he knew.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

My friends that were supposed to be on totally weren't! What liars.

His name was Hung, omg! I would love my last name to be Hung. He was so sweet. When they showed him in the commercial my roommate said "is he retarded? are they trying to branch out by letting oompah loomahs and retards audition?".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on what she was singing in the hallway, the "too caberet" girl was WAY TOO CABERET. She was also crazy (to be hanging out with that freaky manager dude).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The manager guy was what was most disturbing about her.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

really, just his hat.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, Hung was a civil engineer major. He wasn't all that bad of a singer he was just an awful awful dancer. He really should have poicked a less goofy song. I'm sure he is great at karaoke.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That guy danced like Elaine from Seinfeld!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

It's gotta be scripted. It's too GREBT to be true. Heh.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The pink Thunderbird girl was pretty foxy and she actually had a good voice on her too. She's "different". I'm rooting for her.

The midget wasn't that good of a singer so it's obvious they're just taking her on board for the obvious reasons, ie: she's a midget. They really should've picked the "too caberet" one instead. Doo Wah Diddy Diddy, indeed.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to see Anthony Keidis audition and fail miserably.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Singing a Chili Peppers song.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Singing "True Men Don't Kill Coyotes"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to know how the bad singers made it through the primary audition at the stadium to make it into the hotel? They must let only the best and worst through.

A Nairn (moretap), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

*sputters*

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I figure they must screen out the people who might actually have a valid recording contract too. Such deception!

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The only person I felt bad for was the muscular guy who gave the 'wrong' answer about what he'd do with the million dollars. I mean, fine, if he didn't deserve to make it on his own merits, then just give him the boot, but to dangle that question out there and then snap his arm off when he says something dumb (which, admittedly, his response was) seemed a bit cruel even for this show.

And I heart Hung. His sense of rhythm was just a tad off.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that guy had a shitty attitude. When he cut them off and started talking shit I knew he wasn't gonna make it, I kept yelling at the screen "dude, stop talking! STOP TALKING!".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still confused by the sleeping guy who didn't get a chance to sing b/c he didn't care whether he won or not. Mostly because he thought 1 in four odds were really high-go Houston public school system!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

THAT PENCIL SALESMAN GUY IS AWESOME HE IS MY IDOL!!!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Meh

Aja (aja), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to see you try.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

How can you? This is the internet.

I can sing better than Gwen Stefanie, but I bet you could too.

Aja (aja), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved the guy getting in trouble for throwing the water at Simon.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that was great!

Aja (aja), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I can sing better than Gwen Stefanie, but I bet you could too.

Actually, no.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you kidding?

Gwen Stefanie is like the worst singer in the world!

You most certainly can sing better than her!

Aja (aja), Thursday, 29 January 2004 04:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, I hope the redheaded Dean Martin sixteen year old guy makes it farther. I think he could be awesome with some time. and i can't tell if i want to bang scooter girl or kill her.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What happened to the dwarf girl? I didn't see her at all last night.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

me neither. i'm so glad that cocky shit sixteen year old girl didn't make it.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't like that lesbian's attitude which makes me think I must be getting old.

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

im sorry but there is no way in hell she'll make it based on appearance alone. its unfortunate.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No, May, you're right, her attitude sucked, esp. the part where she played the race card; "I'm proud of being white and not being able to dance" sums up everything bad IN THE WORLD. It's like she hasn't even listened to any Ani DiFranco records, just memorized the cover photos.

Begs2Differ, Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, she just had a poor attitude. She should have known going into American Idol that she would have to do a lot of cheesy things like learning dance moves and working as a group -- if she wasn't prepared to do that then she should have went home.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I did, however, like the one who called Simon "gay". Anyone else?

may pang (maypang), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, she reminded me of Mary J. Blige!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I hated her attitude but her voice was good. I also liked the girl with the afro-puff hair. She gave me the chills when she sang.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, Macy Gray girl needs to quit the show immediately so she isn't stuck singing Neil Sedaka songs on her album. Like Simon said, she should be signed regardless. I thought Erskine's version of Open Arms was pretty bad.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Erskine because he has one of those fabulous made up spam names.

I thought all of the singers were pretty bland with the exception of Fantasia. The teen girl singer that was first was okay but she was way too Disney/Hilary Duff-like for my liking.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Erskine too, but he wasn't very good last night. And your right, they were all pretty bland.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

S'up
http://www.idolonfox.com/contestants/erskine_walcott/images/mainpic_erskinew.jpg

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

NO MORE JAZZ NUMBERS PLEASE.

I like Fantasia.

I don't like the smiley girl from Santa Cruz, even if she is (vaguely) local.

I have a class on Wednesday nights so I will ALWAYS miss American Idol once a week. :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Did I really hear Randy say that he was IN Journey for several years?

Nemo (JND), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF Erskine, why'd you cut off the braids?

Marque Lynch was my fav of the night. "Wind Beneath My Wings" though dude!?! Woah.

x-post...yeah Nemo, that's what he said, although I'm not sure he was for real

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

jazz is neat! I thought it was, anyway...

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I loved Simon referencing the crap jazz singer in Lost in Translation and the girl not getting that it was an insult.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

midnight at the oasis.....

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I keep missing AI. What stage are they at in the competition?

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha! That Lost in Translation band was called "Sausalito."

Nemo (JND), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

When is John Stevens performing? I can't wait for the redheaded stepson of Frankie.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I think he's on tonight Chris. He's probly my fav of the whole shebang so far. Me and my roomy had this running "oh, you can just tell who is gonna rock even before they sing" thing going on during the auditions stage, but that kid really freaked me out. I think he may have made my grandma cry he sang so purdy.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

What stage are they at in the competition?

They're at the point where viewers can vote on who will make it through to the final round of the competition.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It's true! Randy was in Journey!

http://www.journey-tribute.com/journey/pictures/group/group04.jpg

Nemo (JND), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a classic picture.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

christ i never knew journey was in the plum smuggling racket.

Yeah I think even though John Stevens was crap in his first couple of performances, forgetting lyrics and what not...he's going to go pretty far.

Chris V (Chris V), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Hungster Cometh

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I hear he was getting attention; but I didn't know he got a website as well.

These people are crazy!

Aja (aja), Friday, 20 February 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

He is more of a star than most of the finalists -- what a mediocre crop of singers.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 20 February 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, i can't believe that football guy beat out the breasty chick.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 20 February 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

But William Hung?!

It's out of pity isn't it?

Aja (aja), Friday, 20 February 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Lisa wuz ROBBED!!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 20 February 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

That Latoya sure can sing!

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i didnt get what was so great about her. the girl before her was shaky but had a much more interesting voice.

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 03:51 (twenty-two years ago)

You sir, have no soul.

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

No, ryan is OTM; Latoya has no real technique and was prone to going wildly out of tune when she went for her glory notes. The other girl had complete mastery of her song and her singing.

Having said that, once Latoya gets to the point where her voice does exactly what she wants it to do at any given moment, SHE WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't stop thinking of Harlan Williams singing "All By Myself" in the prison shower in "Half-Baked".

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

*sputters*

What are you talking about? The second last one's pitch was ALL OVER THE PLACE!

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(I should probably add that I really don't give a rat's ass about any of this)

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

sure you don't :)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I want the pen salesman to win, he sounded kind of like Kermit the Frog when he sang "Tiny Dancer".

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought he just sounded like a guy trying to sound like Elton John.

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

No, his voice is very off and goofy.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Passionately goofy even, like a heartbroken Kramer.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

What's with Simon's overuse of the word 'cabaret'? USE OTHER WORDS PLEASE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

That last message sounded a bit too cabaret for this competition.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a crush on Daughter -Of -Bulgarian- Popstar- Girl.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

And what's up with Randy calling everyone and their Mom "Dude"?

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It's because of all the doobies he smoked when he was in Journey.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, instead of eating pies he has decided to say "dude" whenever he gets a craving.

Someone who is going to Hell. (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Randy ain't feelin' that.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Dawg.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! Latoya made it through to the next level! Oh, what a voice!@ *sobs tears of joy*

maypang (maypang), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It was really obvious she was going to make it, though!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Never underestimate the stupidity of american voters!

maypang (maypang), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:24 (twenty-two years ago)

especially considering kermit got third place

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.idolonfox.com/contestants/amy_adams/images/mainpic_amya.jpg

Favorite album of all time?
John Mayer “Room for Squares.”

maypang (maypang), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I swear to God that wasn't right. I have no shame in admitting that when they panned to Leah all teary-eyed it took hold of my ocular leaking sensors and set forth a gush for the daughter of the Bulgarian pop star.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

A gush of tears, btw.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 26 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

are you sure that was it?

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 26 February 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Its too bad the velvet samoan didn't win. I liked him and his Adam from the real world raps.

Chris V (Chris V), Thursday, 26 February 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Leah wuz robbed! she is SO hot
the voters ears set off metal detectors

back at our azz 4 tha wild card or ELSE !!!

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 27 February 2004 05:32 (twenty-two years ago)

F Leah. This year it's all about Fantasia and Latoya.

maypang (maypang), Friday, 27 February 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(Dear Lord, please don't make me choose between the two of them.)

maypang (maypang), Friday, 27 February 2004 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha "velvet samoan". Yeah I liked him too but god dang if that wasn't a weak-ass performance.

Next week it's all about John Stevens.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 27 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Yup I hope John Stevens does well.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 27 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

If John Stevens gets through now, it'll only be out of pity. I hope it's him and the hawaiian one though, just to mix things up a little bit. I thought the rest of them were pretty terrible.

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a week late with this comment, but LaToya's performance on the Wednesday show wasn't even close to being as good as her show-stealing effort the day before. So I don't think it's in the bag yet.

The hot-bod-but-shit-for-brains Lisa Wilson finally got what was coming to her tonight. After spending the time in Hollywood flirting with the jocks and relaxing in the hot tub instead of practicing, she barely squeaked into the top 32. And now, competing with the best singers, it's more than obvious that she's just not very good at all.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a week behind. The episode with Bulgarian daughter and pen salesman was great! It makes it a real travesty that the bear got throught the week before! The last singer was amazing obv, she reminded me of my beloved Paulini from Australian Idol season 1.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 08:39 (twenty-two years ago)

John Stevens how you hurt me so with your Billy Joel. BUST ME OUT SOME FRANK, BITCH!

Chris 'The Big Ragu' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Following the advice of the judges = KISS OF DEATH. John Stevens you disappoint me!

I hope George Huff goes through. His voice is solid and he seems like a great dude.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, and when garage-face ("I could drive a car in there") girl was singing I totally said to my roommate "I bet she likes to get face-fisted".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Johns voice was good during the song, but man stick with what got you there. Fuck that pop shit.

Chris 'The Big Ragu' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim - are they showing this season's American Idol in Australia?
if so, wonder how many other countries? more commentary is good!

or are you watching by special means?

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The two I picked made it through! F this wildcard shit though. I was hoping I'd never have to see pen salesman again, but now look what's happened.

maypang (maypang), Thursday, 4 March 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

all of them were painful last night. good god. this was the first time I watched it all season and I was so terrified. although I think that conan o'brian/john stevens can probably do better.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's playing on TV in between Australian Idol seasons. I'm surprised to find I'm enjoying it just as much!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 4 March 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

there was a guy on last night who looked like he should be in death cab for cutie

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 4 March 2004 05:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It will be interesting to see how things go next week in the wildcard round.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 4 March 2004 05:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope they bring that one dude Simon called "Daddy-O" back, the effeminate choreographer dude. His voice is fucking brilliant.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought that guy looked like he was convulsing, kind of. He was way too excited, like a person in a high school show choir who just got drunk for the first time.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Simon, I'm glad John Stevens got through because he's different. Witness the success of Clay Aiken -- people are tired of Cardboard Cut-Out Pop/R&B star #74B and they want to vote for something they haven't seen on the previous two seasons. And in this case, it's Rick Astley 2004.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 4 March 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"I hope they bring that one dude Simon called "Daddy-O" back, the effeminate choreographer dude. His voice is fucking brilliant."

Ha ha he should just join Outkast!

I can't believe everyone likes John Stevens. I hate people who cultivate one trick and one trick only and then try to bank on it over and over again. I would have been more impressed if he could have actually busted out of that crooner voice for once.

I luv George Huff though! Even if he wasn't on form the other night.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

is the cute hawaiian girl still in it? i'm rooting for her

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, she still is.

Tim's Outkast comment may be the greatest thing ever.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda hope pen salesman makes it through now. Him, and uh.. the fat black chick with the uggo pink dress.

maypang (maypang), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Wild Card was all about Jennifer, George Huff, Leah & Suzy - in that order
(though Jennifer had easily the best voice, George by far the best crowd connection)

Leah was nowhere near as strong as last time -
what happened to overthetop gushing magnificence?
a cutesy quiet version of "Let's Stay Together" ain't cuttin' by me
still, she's got that something

Suzy sounded great on "I Will Survive" but I didn't feel much vibe
more of a technical showcase

points off to both of them for attempting to tackle impossible standards
(then again this is home of: I am Kelly Clarkson, I will sing "Respect"...)

anyone notice how some Am. Idol performers pick tracks with long uniform stretches then brief showcases - so you're going: wow this is humdrum, then bang - what was that? many of them seem to sing best at full belt...

in contrast to that and all out all out, George Huff is king of the build !

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone help me out: WHO does pen-salesman boy remind me of? It's driving me absolutely crazy.

Anyway, I thought his performance was the funniest thing since William Hung; the whole thing was straight out of a 6th grade dance.

And I think Jennifer Hudson is really sexxxy. She's got a bizarre eye thing going on when she performs, but her face is tres alluring.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 04:59 (twenty-two years ago)

and what was with the awful arrangement for "Let's Stay Together" ? - hideous drums! : Al Jackson Jr. rollin' in his grave

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

George Huff kind of kicks some ass. That voice is fucking great, he's like Teddy Pendergrass at 20. Man if he busted out "Come Go With Me" I'd shit.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

If his album is not called "I'm Young!" or some variant of said phrase I will be very sad.

Meanwhile it's a fucking crime that Scooter Girl isn't still in the competition. She was like Sabrina The Teenage Witch: the Musical!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

She was everything that was wrong with the world.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Pen Salesman and Jennifer (If that's hwo I'm thinking of).

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I always miss the Wed. episode because I have a class. :(

Also - has that gaydar show started yet? is there a thread about it?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"She was everything that was wrong with the world."

Nicole you say that like it's a bad thing!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Lisa Loopner was ousted in some bizarre sizeist conspiracy. She's totally better than that Metzger dude, who must now die.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 11 March 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I liked Lisa's performance the first time; is she good in the wildcard show?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

They didn't even let her perform! It was really humiliating.

I was most excited by the Ricky Smith appearance tonight -- he is still my favorite singer from last season.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 11 March 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Lisa had very nice hair in her first performance I thought.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

She did, I think the reason she got cut is because they thought she was too fat and didn't have the right image for the competition. That's the only reason I can think of that they would have gotten rid of her but kept the likes of Matthew Metzger and Katie Webber.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 11 March 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Which one's Katie Webber again?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

She's one of the two blondes with too many highlights, I think.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

YAY Rickey! I'm very happy now (except for Lisa getting robbed of the chance to compete).
real nice bunch of finalists for this season - should be good!

who does pen-guy remind you of ?
well, he's obviously some kinda Idaho 60's/70's throwback
I dunno, take your pick: Curt Boettcher, Roman Polanski, John Denver (not really...), Richard Carpenter, some guy off the Waltons ?
(either there really is someone he looks like - or maybe he's just an archetype of that era)

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

He reminds me of Riley from Buffy but less er buff.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

When he says "I can do more than sell pens" etc. I always think of the scene in Buffy where she says "You have a lot to learn about girls" and he cups her face and says "You're gonna teach me." He's naff like that.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Did Elizabeth LeTendre get cut? I hope so.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

To throw back to last week's show, how amazing was that 80s rock chick girl? "Ooo ooo ooh!"

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

George Huff is such an idiot man child. I was looking forward to never having to see his daft smiling face again.

maypang (maypang), Thursday, 11 March 2004 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

George Huff rules. Yep Elizabeth Letendre got cut, thank god. She seemed like she showed off way too much. I wanted to kick the bag out of her.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 11 March 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

When he says "I can do more than sell pens" etc. I always think of the scene in Buffy where she says "You have a lot to learn about girls" and he cups her face and says "You're gonna teach me." He's naff like that.

Oh, you're soooo right about that. I wondered why I was disliking Pen Boy so much.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 11 March 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't dislike it so much as find it curiously neglible in much the same way as Riley always was. He's like a black hole where critical thought, judgement and emotive response should be.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 11 March 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

boy, can he shake his ass, though

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 12 March 2004 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

When/where did he shake his ass? I haven't seen the wild card round yet.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 March 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Elvis - "A Little Less Conversation"
strictly class clown

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 12 March 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

He didn't!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 12 March 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't cut it vocally, though he's not a bad singer - wrong range for him I expect

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 12 March 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

scary thing is his 'encore' featured almost identical choreography, which seemed accidental/offthewall first time round, hmm....

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 12 March 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Jennifer is a gospel dynamo - "OK, OK this time I'm really going to keep my voice in check..." "wwwooOOOAAAHHHH!"

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 12 March 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantasia so friggin owns this show. Like COMPLETELY.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Fantasia is a little too ott. Latoya London is a much better singer.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

John Stevens disappoints again. WTF. Hell I agree with Simon that he's different but he really needs to do something more upbeat or he's going to lull america to sleep. I don't like football Matt.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh and George Huff scores again.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone notice Matt's hairpiece? It's kind of hilarious.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

And the judges were totally wrong on Camille. She sounded fucking AWESOME. Way better than whatever that pen-salesman dickface that was on right after her that they PRAISED was.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt annoys me more than anyone who has ever been on my television except maybe Urkel or Traci Bingham. I can't figure out how he's gotten this far.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Daily blowjobs for Ryan.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't find Matt annoying so much as just excruciatingly bland. John Peter (that's that fuckwad's name), now there is an annoying assclown.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Matt and Mark McGwire need to team up for a meaty version of "Beer for My Horses." Jock-a-riffic!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I think that teen girls who write hobbit slash fiction are into Jon Peter, so that's why he's still in it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I won't let myself believe Seacrest has that kind of power. I can't! Blowjobs for Simon, fine.

Is John Peter the Elvis guy or the Ratpack redhead?

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The Elvis guy.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

See, Matt's more than just bland, though, it's his whole smug hammy preening schtick that gets me. You know that thing that kids do when they're like between ages four and eleven or so, and they're really, really sure that everything they do is the most entertaining thing you've ever seen, and it's when they get really into making faces, because they're finally conscious of the fact that you've been laughing at the faces they had been making accidentally, and they're little attention whores without being any good at the whoring, cause they're so young? Most of us get older. Matt seems to be stuck there.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't mind the Elvis guy! Although I missed his thing last night cause I was doing the dishes.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If John Stevens doesn't bust out some Frank soon its over.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

maan, George Huff (!) and Fantasia stole the show! (though Jasmine got a good one in too)

Paul (scifisoul), Friday, 19 March 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

My roommate while discussing this last night said:

"Fantasia should win. And George Huff should live with us."

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 19 March 2004 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon - who watched last night? I only caught the second half. Manic Panic chick was surprisingly good, and I hate country night.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I watched.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I watch it fairly religiously. Go Fantasia! Die John Stevens!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there a rock night?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Peter Lewis is awful -- I am stunned that anyone thinks he can sing. Or do they just vote for him because he's cute? Because personally I just don't see it in either category.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

He is short, so I like him.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

OK - who's gonna watch 'The Swan' when it comes out?

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the extreme makeover thing? Absolutely no way.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like the ultimate FOX television show. Nothing could be more FOX.

I think I might get sick if I watched it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me or is Diana Digarmo the only white person on the show who can sing AT ALL?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh shit I forgot Big Red. But he sure is struggling.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

To me Diana Digarmo is the worst singer in the competition. She's what JonBenet Ramsey would have grown up to be -- this overly theatrical ever-smiling pop tartlet with an absence of any trace of warmth or humanity.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

So this "Swan" thing - is it just "Pimp My Face"?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

OMG

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I know it's gonna be horrible - which is why I'm gonna watch.

I watched 'extreme makeover' a few times.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I just can't watch those -- they make me feel too sad. Last weekend I made the mistake of watching one of those mtv documentaries about twins who had plastic surgery to look like Brad Pitt, it was one of the creepiest and most depressing things I'd seen in quite a while.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay, Matthew R. booted, American people briefly prove that they don't suck. I hope next week all the songs are by some washed-up songwriter who gets to sit creepily and leathery-skinneded with the judges (Anka, Sedaka)...any suggestions? Can we get an Arthur Lee up there? Maybe Axl Rose!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 25 March 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

thank fucking GOD !
I woulda been so pissed at America if Diana or Camille had gone

still loving George and Fantasia most
pleased to see Jennifer didn't get dissed (except by Simon) this week
she must be confused: "be more subtle", "no, be your old self", "huh?"

not feeling Latoya as much as most people, brilliant moments+stage energy yes but a little bit of cold craft
she was better than last week though

I admit there's a few dull ones I'm kinda skipping over: the 2 Jons, fluorohairgirl, Jasmine

haha guess I nailed Jon Peter thing with The Waltons comment above
y'all didn't know I was ghostwriting for Simon, eh?

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

even scarier, maybe 'they' are reading this...

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 25 March 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope the next round is The Songs of Ween. John Stevens could do "Demon Sweat"! Fantasia would totally rip "Freedom of '76" a new asshole! John Peter Lewis could do his drunken person with down syndrome dance to "Voodoo Lady"!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 25 March 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope the next round is The Songs of Ween.

Dude, just say no!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 25 March 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

only if you brought enough acid for the whole class

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 25 March 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Just say YES to Amy Adams' version of "Flies On My Dick"!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 25 March 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Say yes to Honda cross-marketing when the whole bunch does a choral version of "Ocean Man"!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 25 March 2004 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

OK let's try a semi-live update tonight!
have to keep volume low cos my wife's asleep

hooray Motown theme night with the Funk Brothers as back up band
small lead in clip, shots of but no mention of James Jamerson
guess we'll have to watch Standing In The Shadows Of Motown for full story

Ashford and Simpson as guest judges
fave tunes I know by them: "It Seems To Hang On" and "Found A Cure"

first up, Camille with "For Once In My Life"
I love her vocal vibe when she gets going
but she's not strong enough in the low register
just doesn't have the power/wind to put this over or win the show...

Jon Peter Lewis with "This Old Heart Of Mine"
voice sounds good in places, he's got that old throwback soulful country western pop sound
but terrible dancing and he holds back on the "I Love You" bits where the Isleys soar
a mistake: ultimately not that special/strong (though slightly better when I watched it back, best if you listen only)

Latoya on the classic "Ooo Baby Baby"
glad to see she's picked a ballad, so she doesn't lose her breathe
and her strengths come through: lovely vocal tone
especially when she's controlling, not reaching too hard
I still find her to be more of a craft singer, seeking to impress acrobatically
rather than feeling the song, connecting emotion, so she seems a little cold to me
easily the best so far though

Amy Adams "Dancing In The Street"
what's happened to her? such confidence, voice sounds relaxed - wow!
very good connection to audience
although I have to agree it was safe, like really good karaoke
but Simon, ya don't compare someone's looks to a member of the opposite sex
who happens to be one of the most caricatured faces in the U.S.
Jay Leno, indeed!? oh, his sister? poor Amy!

John Stevens sings "My Girl"
dreadful, flat! how did he make it thru the auditions?
man this guy comes on so square he makes Pat Boone sound like heavy metal, oops almost forgot...

***intermission***

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Jennifer Hudson "Heatwave"
now you know I like her if you read up above
she does attack each song like she's ready to TESTIFY any second - right NOW!
a bit distracting from the song, but kind of fascinating in a way
it's like her voice is too powerful, momentarily tackling parts of the song before off trying to win some other battle.
I thought the judges comments were dead-on, especially Simon,
who complimented her for the first time in ages!
MANIC, MAD, but GOOD

Jasmine "You're All I Need To Get By"
very impassioned performance
but she while she has a more powerful voice than say Camille
she doesn't have the nuances, not as interesting melodically
there was a series of phrase-end notes she sang too straight,
that most performers would differentiate thru varied emphasis or even pitch
Simon says best of night so far, not sure I agree
at least she gave it some (movement) on stage

Diana DeGarmo "Do You Love Me?"
peppy energy galore - I think we're in Hairspray!
she can really belt it - guaranteed winning professionalism
she reaches out and bingo:
best audience connection so far - she's taken us back to the sixties!

Fantasia "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"
cool, by her stage movement she's emphasizing, interacting with the band
vocally this is on a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL - NO CONTEST!
already a star

George Huff - my favourite! "Ain't Too Proud To Beg"
the other GREAT voice on this show
this was so effortless and relaxed it's not my fave George so far
still, his tone and the immensity of his voice make it hard not to be bowled over
I actually think he was holding back tonight, having fun
man, turn him loose on "Love TKO" or "...Latest Greatest Inspiration" already
if they have a Philly International night he'll clean up

and my vote goes to Fantasia and George again,
with Diana, Latoya and Jennifer as next best ones

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 04:08 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I haven't been following the show very much and this is the first time I've seen it in awhile, but omg... john stevens is SOOOO CUTE!

phil-two (phil-two), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Funk Brothers yo! Wow.

When I talked to my mom about halfway through Camille's performance I said "this is gonna be George Huff's NIGHT" and lo and behold...

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe it's because I do love Motown and the Funk Brothers so much, but I was really underwhelmed by every performance last night except for George. Having a really great backing band highlighted how half-baked a lot of the singers are.

Metal Mike Saunders should be posting to this thread!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantasisa sang great, but she looked terrible. WHY?

I just realized - we are having people over tonight. Is it bad from to force your guests to watch American Idol? On a fuzzy tv that messes with your eyes?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

It is cruel but fair.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

We have munchies for them. That should help. And wine.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

George Huff is actually Booker Newbury III

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Huff rules.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

He was great. I hate Diana Dewhatshername.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

John Stevens is toast, actually I hope Camille is done. I can't fucking stand her. JPL needs to go too. I really hope they have a Teddy Pendergrass theme. Huff would rock it.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Camile is very cute but I can't understand a word she is singing.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Elton John night!

I've not been much of a fan of Jennifer Hudson's style, but she was fucking SMOKIN last night. On one of my least favorite songs ever no less.

Camille Velasco, who has not been performing well, but whose voice I like (very smoky and sultry, just no presence or power) and who I have quite a crush on, brutally murdered one of my favorite Elton songs (one of my favorite songs ever really) last night.

And the less said about John Stevens performance the better. I had such high hopes for that young man at one point.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Jennifer is awesome! Always has been!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Camille sounds like an amazing singer who smokes way too much weed.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Maui Wowie

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well its true, John Stevens is a one trick pony. Although I thought he was better last night than last week. Camille has no sex appeal. Her hip-hop dance moves are wack. Someone should stuff her wristband in her mouth so she shuts the fuck up.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she just needs to stand up straight.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Easy, Chris.

I think it's clear that certain people (namely Jon Peter Lewis, camille, and John Stevens) simply can't do any more to take things to the next level. These people need to go.

I think about this stuff a lot.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I think about how John Stevens is analagous to Dubya

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Paula Abdul=Scalia

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I find this show terribly irritating on all levels, but yet I watch. Its like heroin.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

You find heroin irritating?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oh come on you know what i meant.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to go fetch my laundry so I missed John Stevens last night -- I'm glad it worked out that way.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

You were lucky.

With the two teenagers, I feel like saying "come ON, you're teenagers! Go crazy! Scream! Get wasted or something! Your time is running out!!!!".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking last night they should probably ban teenagers from the competition. They were all awful.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone else notice that during DD's performance there were hardly any men in the audience at all?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Gay men don't turn out for JPL they way they did for Clay and Justin.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

But George is gay, right?

...right?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I was arguing about that with my wife just this morning. I'd always just assumed he was gay.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

no, he's a cook. Were he gay he'd be a chef. Or something.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I think George just adopted the whole man-child thing as a defense against his hard-core gangsta neighborhood growing up, and the competition is teaching him that he can be an adult, a real live (and sexualized) man.

but my head's probably up my ass.

like adam, I think about this way too much.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha! That's why they pay you the big bucks.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

We could write a fucking thesis on this thing.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah why don't you write a fucking thesis on MY thing

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

but George is so New Orleans, dontcha think? if we wasn't bubbly he coulda been a Cash Money $$$illionaire!

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 8 April 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno, even Master P is kinda bubbly these days

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Camille is gone! John Stevens survives another week. In all fairness they need to have a Frank Sinatra themed night.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not fair! Nor is it money, I might add. John Stevens wouldn't even do well on Lou Reed night!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hope JPL gets the boot next. He's gotta go. George and Fantasia in the finals. Too bad the world already has one Macy Grey, we don't need another. Huff takes it home. dip...dip...dip.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I really don't think she sings like Macy Grey at all! Macy Grey has very little range and sounds like she smokes like fifty blunts a day. Fantasia's voice is really powerful.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Things that made me sad last night re: Camille...

A) Camille sang "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" SO MUCH BETTER this time around; if she had done it like that Tuesday it woulda been somebody else going home.

B) Dude what up with those stupid fucking PANTS!?!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I love John Stevens but honestly for what he did to that "waaaah wahwahwahwahwaaaaah" part of "Crocodile Rock" on live television I would've punched him in the scrotum.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantasia TOTALLY sounds like Macy Gret with a wider range (ie, more than three notes).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

he prob'ly would've sung better had you done that xpost

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bet $5 on George Huff to take the whole thing. Do you see the way the audience reacts to him? No way anyone can beat him.

ha ha Donna totally

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife is in love with him. Im telling you Teddy Pendergrass night....he'd take it home.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

and he was a replacement for one guy that got booted for DUI.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah why don't you write a fucking thesis on MY thing

Gaaaah, I'm trying. I promise. :( I haven't forgotten.

Hey, forget American Idol, who saw THE BACHELOR?

(kidding)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

who got booted for DUI? I'm out o' the loop, apparently

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

George Huff is really a good singer, the onlt prob is those tight ass pants. He needs to lose the nutt cutters and the hugging jackets and he's all good.As for the red head kid he would be a hit at retirement home.

kitty, Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, Chris!
it seems that John's grandparents are his biggest fans, so he might already be a hit at the retirement home!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

My theory is that there are a lot of older people that watch AI, hence all the votes and support for John.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

that theory is quite plausible

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think some people want a white guy to win this time since ruben won last time. It might start a riot with the kkk.

kitty, Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

didn't Cowell fix the Pop Idol last year? It could happen here!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Quentin Tarantino is going to be guest judge next week -- for Barry Manilow night!?!?!

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU ARE LYING

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I was wrong about Manilow, I could have sworn I heard it was going to be Manilow for next week. But the rest is true -- here's the blurb from Entertainment Weekly:

Next week on ''American Idol,'' the guest judge will be someone for whom the word ''DiVAS'' doesn't refer to Fantasia or La Toya, but rather Deadly Viper Assassination Squad. It's Quentin Tarantino, who'll be the celebrity guest judge during a week in which the contestants will sing movie theme songs. The 41-year-old director follows ''Idol'' closely, his publicist, Bumble Ward, told EW.com. ''He's no dilettante. He's the real deal when it comes to being a celebrity judge,'' she said. So when asked to be a judge, ''he leapt at the opportunity.'' (The guest stint also happens to coincide with the release next Friday of Tarantino's ''Kill Bill -- Vol. 2.'') No word on who his favorites are among the eight remaining finalists, but Ward says: ''He's an ardent and opinionated fan of the show.'' Also no word on which movie songs the contestants will sing, though we have some suggestions: First, please don't let any of the women sing Whitney Houston's ''Bodyguard'' ballad ''I Will Always Love You.'' Second, John Stevens' Bing Crosby imitation could at last find an ideal fit with Der Bingle's ''White Christmas.'' Finally, if JPL sings ''Stuck in the Middle With You,'' from Tarantino's own ''Reservoir Dogs'' soundtrack, we fear the filmmaker might slice his own ear off.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Does this mean one of the genres enacted in KBv2 will be "talent show"? Because that would be great.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope Quentin cusses up a storm and says something about dogs needed to gnaw through JPL's scrotum.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Jennifer Hudson please sing "Purple Rain" k thx bye.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Nicole! leave that blasphemy thread alone and come over here and start anticipating!

So...who's next for the chop?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been overtaken by fredmania, sorry.

I would love to see either Jon Stevens or JPL get voted out, but I'm afraid that it's not going to happen. Maybe Diana DiGarmo or Jasmine?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

As long as they're still in high school, i will be happy.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There's obviously way too much love for them white boys that can't sing in America. I kinda like John Stevens but GOD DUDE boy is struggling. I bet Jasmine goes next. She's got a good voice and is very pretty, but yet somehow has like no appeal whatsoever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

she is very pretty though.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

wow my tivo just did something I've never seen it do before...when I pressed the menu button it went straight to a message about AI3 being postponed and stuff.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

tonight!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 April 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT FANTASIA SINGING "SUMMERTIME"!!!! I've been watching this shit since the get-go and that was the first time any of the performances actually affected me emotionally. They could send all seven of the others home (even George Huff) tonight and I wouldn't give one god damn.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

And when George started talking about his favorite movie being The Wiz I was like "SING 'EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD'!" cuz him singing that would be PERFECT but instead he sang some lamewad PHIL FUCKING COLLINS song.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

My wife (who actually hates Fantasia) said that "Summertime" was far and away the highlight of the show.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

You hippies are smoking the crack pipe, "Somewhere" was aeons better than "Summertime" -- I actually had chills when Latoya sang it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

John Stevens was good. But he is definately meant for the retirement circuit.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't even think he was that good, even at his own genre! Simon is otm this time, he just lacks any sort of energy or charisma.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it was really funny how Q.T. was so into American Idol, and making all these references to past weeks and acting like he owned the place. JPL was horrendous. So were Diana and Jasmine. I love Fantasia.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Simon is often OTM, and John Stevens sucks but JPL sucks worse; the only reason he's still around is that the LDS community is rallying behind him and block-voting, there's no other explanation.

La Toya is Very Very Good, but Fantasia is All-World Good.

I think everyone's wrong about George, though; last night he proved that he can do romantic ballads and not just be a big goof. (I'm the only one who thinks like this.)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I still voted for George. Honestly I don't want either George or Fantasia to win. They are better off losing so they don't have to sing Neil Sedaka songs for the rest of their lives. They'd be better off to lose and get signed somewhere else. If that would happen...

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

My daughter is so cynical about singing now; she's all "Oh, she's pitch-y tonight" and "I'm sorry but he does NOT have what it takes to be a star." This morning she was singing along with Hilary Duff songs in her room with MUCH melisma action.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

did you walk in and say "yeah yeah yeah what up dog! just not feelin it this mornin dog."

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

There is something about Fantasia's voice that is, to me, very unlikeable. Maybe it is the similarity to Macy Gray, I don't know. It's probably just me.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

wow - I didn't even post last week? I liked Tarantino as judge - refreshingly intense and concise comments! I liked Jennifer & Fantasia best

this week it's Barry Manilow

George is seriously slippin'
performers need to not choose songs that maroon them in a lower register sargasso

competition has tightened up so much that now a bad week could even sink a powerful talent like George
seriously though, (nice as he seems) John Stevens proved again that he is one of the weakest singers ever to make the finals

on the other hand.... Jennifer absolutely stole the show!
one of the most blinding vocals I've ever heard on any Idol season

after that I'd probably take Fantasia's raucous down-to-earth grit
over Latoya's showboating grand dame gestures (despite some superior moments)
in fact I think Jasmine got to me second or third best of the night

Diana sang passionately, strongly, but out-of-tune in enough spots to land in the bottom three

so my ranking tonight:

Jennifer
Jasmine
Fantasia
Latoya
George
Diana
John

competition so far:

Fantasia
George
Jennifer (very close to passing the top 2)
Latoya
Jasmine
Diana
John

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

AMERICA YOU FUCKIN' DIE !!!!

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I AGREE

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, what the fuck?

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

what happened?

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY BOOTED JENNIFER

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy fuck, I didn't even bother watching because I figured it was a given that John was toast.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

THEY BOOTED JENNIFER

And Fantasia was voted 6th out of the 7!! (and, for that matter, LaToya was 5th!)

scott pl. (scott pl.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

As those who enjoy good singing split the vote all over the place...John Stevens...slowly...softly...soothingly...rises to the top....

Who's the guest judge next week? I was stoked enough by the snippet of "Nothin' But a Good Time" in that Ford Focus promo to hope for a Hair Metal week. Get C.C. Deville, say, or perhaps we can dust off Kip Winger.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

to clarify, that was my reaction to the bottom 3
that it was JENNIFER who went makes it even worse

I have little faith left in the show now (the edit of Jennifer's final rendition was murderous)
let alone the majority of 'fellow' viewers

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 22 April 2004 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

how can there be vote-splitting? You can vote for whomever you want as often as you want...the secret of John "Sufjan Jr." Stevens is revealed

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 22 April 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

which is that his parents are staying up calling all night, obv :)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 22 April 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

I have to start voting now. I just can't sit idly by and watch shit like this happen.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 April 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a sad person who reads dedicated American Idol messageboards, and there are basically whole armies of teenage fans who vote continuously over the 2 hours for John Stevens, Jasmine Trias, or Diana DeGarmo.

I have a feeling Jennifer won't be the only amazing singer beaten by a bunch of teenyboppers. A lot of people just don't get Fantasia or like her. La Toya may be safer because she's much more inoffensive and does more accessible interpretations of the songs.

syntaxfree (syntaxfree), Thursday, 22 April 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

that was horrendous. hey i like John Stevens and all but come on, he should have been gone a few weeks ago. Fucking teenboppers voting for Diana "Cheeks Mcgee" DeGarmo. She's got to go too.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 22 April 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

John Stevens is just a putz, but Jasmine and Diana are evil incarnate, as far as I'm concerned. When I am king, etc. etc.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course, Jasmine is very pretty.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 22 April 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

But so are Fantasia and LaToya!

And John Stevens looks embarassed about the whole thing. HE WANTS TO BE VOTED OFF, AMERICA. PUT HIM OUT OF HIS MISERY!

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

HOLY SHIT FUCKING FUCK YOU AMERICA IN YOUR STUPID EMPTY BRAIN CAVITIES AAAAARRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHH!!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

And what the fuck with that whole shit with George walking over to what he thought was the highest vote-getting group? It's like they WANT us to fucking RIOT.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:23 (twenty-one years ago)

My roommate's theory is that everyone who would usually vote for Fantasia, Latoya, and Jennifer weren't watching on Barry Manilow night because, well, because it was fucking Barry Manilow night. I'd like to disagree, but I'd like to maintain some sort of faith in humanity.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe people didn't vote for the bottom three because they just assumed that they were safe? Or maybe people are just tasteless and evil.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, Fantasia isn't particularly pretty. She's rather plain.

Jennifer is GORGEOUS.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Really? I think she's pretty. She wasn't looking her best this week, though.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Did coming out with her daughter hurt her in the voting, I wonder?

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

no, its the fact that we already have one macy gray and don't need another.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:45 (twenty-one years ago)

That's what my wife says, too, but I've never heard Macy Gray.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

you don't want to... trust me.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 22 April 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

This is ridiculous - it reminds me of a Chicago mayoral election.

Jennifer isn't the 'Macy Gray' one, though.

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 22 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

But I hate Macy Gray and love Fantasia. Their speaking voices are very similar, but their singing voices aren't. Macy Gray is much lower and gruffer, whereas Fantasia's certainly capable of hitting those high notes, and also of singing with a clearer more conventional sort of tone when it suits the song eg. Always On My Mind.

syntaxfree (syntaxfree), Thursday, 22 April 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus, Macy Gray always sings like she's about to fall asleep.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

People who vote for John Stevens are as stupid and wrong as people who vote for Bush. Let's banish them all to Utah.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 22 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's banish them all to Utah.

b-b-but Utah is the most beautifullest state!
they got enough environment-wreckers there already

I say bury them in a ridge in Nevada instead

I just wanted to punish them with Mormons. Then again, John Stevens fans probably would enjoy them.

WU-TANG NIGHT

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha.

Everyone has to do the opening monologue from Return to the 36 Chambers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"I feel...the earth...move...under..."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"And now, to perform 'Shame on a Nigga', Mr. John Stevens..."

Ryan Seacrest (nickalicious), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I would pay good money to see that.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still mad about Jennifer. She's been a local celebrity here.

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

And her voice is amazing! Hopefully this will lead to better things for her.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Well if William Hung can get a deal...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Er.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

because the idol contestants are expected to sing "prefabbed" songs - (songs that have been done over x over to death) this already leads to corrupted results overall because of popular opinion or prejudgement of how the song is suppose to sound...meaning there cannot be a clear(as in new/fresh/pristine)reading ...is there a contest show where contestants sings their own damn song?...that would be something...a much different kind of contest...

mleslie (Michele Leslie), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, yes it would.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

okay......new vote for more originality in song choices & performances...liked fantasia's take on summertime!...that stands out as a "truer" performance....i almost have to gag when the "kids" have to start doing "musical-like" performances that are like very bad h.s. productions!... who choreographs those sequences either? yuk!... i'd almost take the pen salesman's dancin' style over these movements...(said almost)!...quirky but original!...

mleslie (Michele Leslie), Friday, 23 April 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ANTICIPATION TIME.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Touch And Go night is going to be so, so great. I can't wait to hear George Huff do "Then Comes Dudley".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe John Stevens will do "Columbian Necktie"! (And if he doesn't get voted off, maybe someone will give him one.)

Nemo (JND), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

All the kids could gang up to sing a Don Cab song accapella.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Tonight is Gloria Estefan night. If this doesn't kill John Stevens, I don't know what will.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Gloria Estefan??!?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Manilow is one thing, but Estefan? Estefan? *sobs*

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

One other thing...someone please kill the horrible fast-motion video montages with horrible product placement in them.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

My mum loves Gloria Estefan. LOVES her.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Just in case you missed the REAL American Idol 3 thread, on ILM:

Metal Mike Saunders on American Idol

Remember...everyone has a vote. USE IT!!!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, Barry Manilow and now Gloria Estefan? What kind of audience are they going for here?

kirsten (kirsten), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

My mum. Sadly, she lives in London and will not be watching.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

my take on tonight - ranking:

George
Fantasia
Diana
Jasmine
Latoya
John

no one excelled - Diana had the best single moment
Jasmine woulda placed much higher if she'd stayed in tune all the way through
Jennifer was sorely missed

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

as usual that was order primarily vocal-based

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 01:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I cracked my supervisor at work up by imitating John singing "Bad Boys" when she told me about the Estefan thing.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

She makes me listen to the audio clips but she actually brought in the footage of him singing "Crocodile Rock."

You'll never hear me question the racism in America ever again.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I never realized until last night how much I like Gloria Estefan's music. Her band is smokin' too.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I never realized until last night how much I truly loathed Gloria Estefan's music.

El Diablo Curmudgeonbotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm with you there nicole. thanks to tivo i watched the show in 15 minutes this morning. i took a steaming dump right afterwards. thats how much i liked it.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Oddly enough there was some old Miami Sound Machine song playing yesterday when I grabbed some dinner near my place. I remember obliquely thinking the beats weren't bad but now I can't remember a damn thing else about it, and I know that back in the late eighties I must have heard it about eight million times!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a friend who can't even bring herself to say the name of the evil Gloria, oops, G.E. Now I understand

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a friend who owns every single cd by gloria estefan, queensryche, elton john, and ozzy osbourne. i have told this story several times now.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting mix there.

El Diablo Curmudgeonbotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Last night was the first time I ever felt compelled to vote for Jasmine. She had quite a bit of power, almost too much in a couple places, her voice kinda scratched or something.

I felt let down by Fantasia's performance. Maybe, by expecting her to totally blow everyone else away all the time, I'm just setting myself up for disappointment.

I voted for George. Why? Because he's a solid singer, a charismatic performer, and the most adorable full grown man in existence.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting mix there.

Indeed. Gloria seems the odd one out there to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually voted last nite - flipping between fantasia (cuz she's best) and jasmine (cuz ebertian reasons) on the redial

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I have never voted for anyone -- I think as much as watch the show I would feel dirty somehow if I actually went and voted.

El Diablo Curmudgeonbotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Elton John thinks AI voting is "racist."

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

the girl with the big booty should win

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

(nb: i've only seen about 2 minutes of this. with the sound off)

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I never get to SEE the show, but based on the USA Today soundclips I heard my favorite is LaToya. Fantasia's always searching for notes to extend. Showboating seems more important to her than the melody or the lyric. And everybody else is kind of a fucking joke.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

George just better keep praying for Luther Vandross day.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

And I never thought Gloria Estefan had vocal charisma until I heard other people sing her songs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

And I really wish John was forced to do "Conga"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed it. Who was dumped?

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

John, finally. He seemed relieved.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet! I was worried Bee Gees day was coming and he'd have to kill himself.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

thank fucking god
also on the plus side - Fantasia in top 3 despite Simon's inane comments
minus - George's 5th place ranking

I hope this doesn't end up a washout
in the first season Kelly's voice had blown out by the final few weeks
Justin had already proven himself merely 3rd best
and with Tamyra 2nd (or maybe 1st) best gone
only Nikki seemed to improve week on week, despite being in a league below those others

weird show, huh? yet oddly compelling

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I would love an "American Idol All-Stars" show! Nikki McKibbin vs Goat-Girl vs John Stevens: WHO WOULD WIN???

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup thank god he got the boot. I liked him at first and then grew tired of his old man shit week after week. If they have a Luther night George will take it home. They should have a Gregory Abbott night too. Nothing like a little "Shake you down" to warm up the crowd. Einneee meanee mineee mooo...

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

THANK YOU CHRIS I have been trying to remember the name "Gregory Abbott" for the past week!

You read my mind
Girl, I wanna shake you down
Lemme give you all the lovin' you need

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Well son, they're from the Baltic but they have slurred speech.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Might as well add Freddy Jackson and "Rock Me Tonight" to songs George can do.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Next week is BIG BAND NIGHT. Oh, the bitter, bitter irony.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The tearful reation of the other Idols to John's departure made me remember that he's a nice kid and made me feel a moment of remorse for the harsh words I've blogged in his general direction. George especially seemed sad that he was leaving.

All these kids seem like they're very warm, nice people, who get along with each other. As far as reality shows go, shit, as far as REALITY goes, this strikes me as unique.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Nickalicious, you naive, beautiful fool.

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Next week is BIG BAND NIGHT. Oh, the bitter, bitter irony.

hahahahaha! HOLY SHIT! At the very least we know that in whatever town he's from ol' 16 year old John's salsa is going to be making the pretty girls want to dance and take of their underpants for the rest of his damn life. Keep swingin', lil' rat packer.

Why do they keep sticking George with non-ballads? He could have rocked "Don't Wanna Lose You" but instead he does "Live For Loving You." He's got a voice like molasses.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually now I really wanna hear George sing "Rub You The Right Way." Or maybe I just really wish I was hearing that right now.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:06 (twenty-one years ago)

It's only now sunk in how creepy it is that John Stevens sang that love song to his grandmother.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

big band week ranking (based on both cuts combined)

Fantasia
Latoya
Diana
George
Jasmine

I feel bad for George - wrong range, wrong vibe, a couple bum runs

Latoya's Broadway mastery is undeniable - punchy, dramatic, dynamics!

Fantasia is the master of consistency & heart this season

still missing Jennifer

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

still missing Jennifer

OTM

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Switch George and LaToya, and I agree with Paul.
I thought George was great this week. Singing a song as well known as "What a Wonderful World" was a ballsy move, and he pulled it off without sounding as though he was apeing the original.
It's obvious that Fantasia and the infinitely more boring and uninteresting LaToya will be the final two, we can only hope that the voters choose correctly.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's obvious that Fantasia and the infinitely more boring and uninteresting LaToya will be the final two.

Bet you some serious cash that won't be the case.

Local pride means that I will support LaToya whatever happens.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

LaToya is BORING. She's so JLo.
I miss Jennifer too and John did get annoying. I used to like him until I realised he was sixteen and then I understood what boys went through when they have all these thrusting britneys/xtinas/mandy moores.
I could fall in love with someone like George, he makes me smile.

Nellie (nellskies), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If she is J.Lo, that implies that she can't sing.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantasia gets more annoying every week. Why does she always have to pimp her daughter to get votes?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 11:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, I've had about enough of Fantasia Boreino. I have to admit I think Red Stevens would have kicked some serious Big Band ass if he was still on the show.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the whole thing sucked last night, and I no longer care who wins.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I just want to make out with Jasmine.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Jasmine is BOOOOOORIING, and she did not even make the Big Band dressup effort. why??

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm kind of with Kerry -- they were all pretty blah last night and were so annoying I really don't care who wins. At least last season I had someone to actively route against (Clay) but at this point this year I just can't bring myself to care.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked Jennifer. Have yet to see the big band episode but I almost want Diana to win now. Fantasia is good but you just know her musical career would be Macy Gray mk II.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

East Coast people - plz tell me who gets kicked off so I can go do something else.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It was George. :(

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

LaToya is still my fave (based on the little audioclips I hear. She's got pipes AND restraint). Everyone else can just go away.

I never got George, though I have a feeling he must have rocked stage appeal judging by his immense (x-post-I thought!) fanbase.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks, Nicole! Oh NO!!! :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Mrs Nordic is now in tears.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That boot-off show was a big fat tumor-ridden ball of wrongness.

Fantasy Burrito (Andy K), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. GREAT name.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

george was my fave. justice has not been done

the 'surface' 'noise' (electricsound), Thursday, 6 May 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why I wasn't more sad to see George go.
George and Jennifer were my faves even above Fantasia.

maybe it's just that he hasn't quite fulfilled the early promise
so I even wondered if the show itself was holding him back.
also I think he took too much heat on occasions he had a merely good week.

I guess it's because he came right out the gate with that big Eddie Levert / Teddy Pendergrass voice, kinda like Ruben did with Luther last season.
so he set the bar too high early - I believe with rest he'll be even better.

except... his farewell encore of "What A Wonderful World" was as moving as anything he ever sang or I've ever heard on Idol.
so he could have gone all the way...

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

It sortof makes me sad that Tim wants Diana to win. Can't you see how evil she is, Tim?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

What's wrong with America?

Aja (aja), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Diana should not win, she's boring. LaToya can sing and in the words of Tarantino, she is power house. It's just unfortunate that the power house is located in dullsville on crappy lane with a poo garden.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I like your style.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

as for Latoya, I've never rated her as high overall,
because I feel like she's a showy singer, with focus on impressing

I don't get a lot of feeling from her renditions of songs
in fact, for all the elegance of her curlicue dynamics and punchy peaks
she strikes me as a quite tense singer
her voice is not that strong when she's not working it hard
(a problem for many of the contestants - especially in their lower range)
I think she's so intent on the money shot that she sacrifices feeling -
her energy is directed outward at the audience
instead of drawing them in

Fantasia on the other hand is cathartic (though often raucous) when pumping up the audience,
but subtle, controlled-in-a-relaxed-way and involving on the deeper, internal songs

anyway, that's how they affect me - don't know if I can put it any better

but I do think it could end up as a battle between Fantasia & Latoya
I only hope that Latoya can get more vulnerable & expressive

Kimberley Locke was in the same boat last season
with her fancy voice lessons and her diva distance
until she landed in the bottom 3
and began to show some heart
invulnerable power is not the strongest kind, ya know

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

The big thing about these types of competitions that piss me off is how America will punish you for haaving technique and singing in a manner that will sustain your voice.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, how do you rate these singers versus the earlier seasons?

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan, why didn't you audition?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't tell me it never crossed your mind.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The cut-off age is 25, dude. I'm WAY too old.

The singers this season split the difference between seasons 1 and 2; The Three Divas (and George and Jazmin when she's on) rank up there with the best the competition has seen, while others are ridiculously horrible (the men who aren't George all leap to mind).

I wanted Jennifer or LaToya to win, Jennifer because she was blossoming into a powerhouse and LaToya because, well, she's just got it together all the way around. Fantasia is very, very good but I'm not so much a fan of her rasp. George would have been a great choice seeing as he's a fucking soul monster but America was not going pick two soulful black men in back-to-back years.

I will say that from what I've heard, the overall talent level of this top 5 is higher than previous years; there isn't anyone left who makes me want to run out of the room unlike in previous years (Nikki, Josh).

Having said all of that, I have been super-busy this season with my own singing and have managed to miss most of the performances.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they're all quite good myself
but I'm not that excited to tune in each week

must be getting bored with the format
(for all the talk of Dylan week - though I can imagine which tunes they'd choose to make even his oeuvre seem dull)

even though I was excited at first (season) to learn that pop & R&B were apparently the music of middle America
the fact they've confined it to sixties/seventies/eighties mainstream (with song repetition even - agh!)
and now ever more MOR vocalist fare
is getting dull & old fast...

still, "What A Wonderful World" eh?

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, that was stunning!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The cut-off age is 25, dude. I'm WAY too old.

America's loss. :(

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus everything they sing is out of my range and my falsetto sucks ass. If they let me sing art songs, I'd be okay.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Jennifer can always find work battling hurricanes, parting seas and invoking divine manifestations

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha true enough! (Also luring entranced sailors onto reefs and eating their hearts.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Still...it's Donna Summer week next week. Hooray for that.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

(reacts to A.I. credits screen)
CATHY DENNIS, JEWELS & STONE need to get off their arses and write some world-conquering songs for S CLUB 8 !

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 6 May 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@ml, I wasn't being serious! I don't actually *like* Diana, it's just that everyone else seems to have peaked to the point that I can only imagine liking them less and less as the competition advances unless they pull major rabbits out of their hats - whereas Diana at least has been improving slightly (I'm only up to the Estefan episode though). Jennifer was the only one who felt like she was growing in the competition.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 May 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i bet it comes down to diana and latoya

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 6 May 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

George is better off, no more Neil Sedaka shit songs for him.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 6 May 2004 10:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Disco Night next week. I wanna see Fantasia get her Donna Summer on. Still waiting for LaToya to do something that actually sticks in my head and reminds me that she exists.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe it was George to go. He seemed to have the best audience connection of all of them.

Fantasia is my favorite though, ill talk of rasp be damned. She's not as professional as LaToya certainly, but she seems way more genuine and involved in her performances; you can tell a difference in their background by their style, the wedding singer vs. the gospel singer. If LaToya had ever had a moment like 'tasia did with "Summertime" (or like Jennifer did with "Circle of Life", for that matter), I might rate her higher, but as it is, I'm just not feelin' it.

whats the deal with Paula always being injured? This week she had a cotton ball on her finger. Probably from giving Cowell the shocker.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Those two seriously gotta be getting it on or something, the way they're behaving. I wonder if he critiques her while they're doing it.

"Paula, that was just pathetic. What it comes down to is that you're simply not doing enough to get me off, I'm sorry, but that's the truth."

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe it was George to go. He seemed to have the best audience connection of all of them.

He had a few bad weeks. He looked like the front-runner, easy, early on, but he'd started to go a little slack and started cruising. I do think he pulled it together this week a bit -- I respected the fact that he took "It's a Wonderful World" and stripped off Armstrong's approach and avoided his vocal runs. But it wasn't quite enough. I thought it was going to be Jasmine's last week because she gave the weakest performance out of everybody.

I'm addicted, but after three seasons of regular viewing Fantasia's "Summertime" is the only performance I'd actually want to own and have handy. She -- or, rather, the AI producers -- are heroically attempting to make Fantasia look less aloof onstage (yes, yes, Fantasia, we know you have a daughter, great). But I think if it comes down to her and LaToya, LaToya's gonna take it.

Still: Fantasia doing "Bad Girls" or "I Will Survive" or "Lost In Music" or anything that gives her room to play in could really be great. I'll miss George taking a stab at "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" or John trying "Play that Funky Music."

Jasmine

but I'm bracing myself for possible Fantasia departure....
let's hope she picked up those George fans

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantasia won't go this week. Jasmine was totally flat. And boring. Actually, the whole show was boring, but it's finals week and I need a TV break every now and then.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Only just watched the big band ep - totally gone off Diana (but sounds like her next performance is good?). Back in the Fantasia camp - the Streisand cover was amazing and I don't even like Streisand!

I'm kind of glad I watched it, actually. Just because I'd never seen anyone booed on American Idol before.

kirsten (kirsten), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, who got booed?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Gotta say that LaToya singing "Don't Rain on My Parade" like she friggin' won the competition is one of the brassiest, ballsiest, god-lovin' kick-assing-est things I've seen on the show yet. Finally I believe in LaToya.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone booed when it was announced that Jasmine was safe and LaToya was in the bottom two, and Jasmine just sat there with her hands over her mouth, looking like she was going to cry. And they kept booing.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 13 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-one years ago)

When LaToya commented last night that it didn't matter who won the competition because all four would have good careers, I thought to myself "OK then, if winning doesn't matter to you, then I hope you go home tomorrow night".
I think that comment partly did her in.
She's obviously better than Jasmine, but I find her bland so I'm not disappointed that she won't win.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 13 May 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

what a rollercoaster ride!
I just got near the end of my tivo'd show
and was gonna post about RACIST AMERICA, etc
but reading all your comments helped

...and then I got to witness Latoya's powerful confident final encore
which helped even more
Paula and Fantasia bawling - a definite feeling that Latoya will be moving on to greater things

how many great singers have been knocked out already?
Jennifer, George, now Latoya...

like, I bet, a lot of you - deep down something's saying Jasmine should step down
but I don't care as much about that
as the fact she was voted into THE TOP TWO
I mean c'mon
America get real

and just cos Fantasia is safe this week
doesn't mean she won't be at risk next

if Jasmine makes the final two - at the expense of either Fantasia or Diana
or, jesus wept, wins - this season's American Idol finals will be a hollow victory

unless she pulls some kind of apocalyptic performance
but I don't think it's gonna happen

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 13 May 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Who keeps on voting for Jasmine? I find that so disturbing, she's the worst thing since LaToya.

From the show's Web site:

They've come this far. But who has what it takes to go all the way? We may learn Tuesday night when the ladies each sing three songs, one that they chose, one that the judges chose and one that music industry giant Clive Davis chooses for them.

Is "Clive Davis night" just a nice way of saying we're in for big hour-long slop-bucket of Air Supply?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 14 May 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It's been clear for weeks that Fantasia should win this competition, but tonight the entire show was geared toward burying the other two and selling Fantasia as the greatest singer ever.
Sure, Fantasia's win is the only just and logical ending, but the hyper-subjectivity from everyone who opened their mouth on the show tonight was a bit sickening.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Point taken, but given the way the voting has been going I'll take pounds and pounds of hyper-subjectivity with a side of phone-rigging, plz.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, they were lobbying hard enough that maybe it'll swing it but right now if i had to bet i'd put my money on diana, no joke.

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

The kicker was forcing Jasmine to sing "All By Myself", which everyone remembers LaToya singing to vault herself into the finals. If that wasn't a not-so-subtle hint to Jasmine that her prescence was not preferred over a certain other Idol finalist, I don't know what is.
(xpost, agreed Dan, but I wish they didn't have to be so blatant about pushing the panic button)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 02:05 (twenty-one years ago)

relief...
though I finally worked out how Jasmine managed to stay in the competition these last few weeks: she was signalling in Hula to Hawaii !

agreed (about the cuteness) Dan
I keep expecting to find a thread called:

several of them are kinda adorable
I think it's the empathy factor
what they're going through is so intense that some of it transmits to us
and we identify with them

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Tamyra proved AGAIN that she was far and away the best singer from season 1 tonight. Also, she's writing her own songs and cowrote this year's Idol song = she is the American Idol contestant who will make the most money from the music industry.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

bizarre though - in the sense that it makes Kelly Clarkson's rise more of a temporary, less stable phenomenon
maybe she was the one who benefitted most from the intensive workshop-like training

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i think diana had the best single performance last week (tho maybe i just liked the song)

ryan (ryan), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Fantasia's second song was the best performance of the night.

I think people get so impressed by the size and maturity of Diana's voice that they don't hear the BAD BAD BAD BAD pitch issues. (Granted, Fantasia has this issue too, which is one reason why I was so firmly behind Jennifer and LaToya.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If I were going to vote at this point, I'd vote for Diana -- I don't think she's the best of the bunch, but I've never liked Fantasia, and I've really been trying to the last few weeks. I mean, I can tell Fantasia has skill, obviously, but her voice sets my teeth on edge. I'd probably buy a Diana album; I'd almost certainly change the station any time a Fantasia song came on. But I'm not surprised it's come down to them.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not a fan of Fantasia at all, but I hate Diana even more. She seems as though she should have been the star of Showbiz Moms and Dads instead of AI. Everything about her is so robotic and rehearsed, you can tell she has been coached and forced to entertain since she was very young. So when she's sings it's like a big empty -- even though she can be technically proficient, you never get the sense that there's any personality or feeling or signs of life behind it.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Jennifer was the best.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan OTM about Tamyra -- how did she score this "Idol" songwriting gig? That's a major coup.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 20 May 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Nicole OTM (except I still like Fantasia less than Diana). Diana seems like she'll be better in ten years, if she's still around and hasn't been turned into something terrible and/or self-parodic. I can see her going through some silly Fiona Apple-inspired anti-record-label reinvention period in her late teens/early 20s, when she gets resentful of the industry, and then putting out some perfectly competent albums after she grows up. Simon's right, ultimately: she's too young. It doesn't matter that other singers have turned out good work at the same age or younger: she's still too young.

But I like her voice, in that way where you can hear a song and think, "ehh, this song isn't doing it for me, but there's something going on there, maybe I'll dig the next single."

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 20 May 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

don't forget that at this point, their voices are overtaxed, not in peak condition
so not the best time to render full judgement
but this week it was clear that Fantasia has the most powerful (best) voice
of the remaining 3
Diana has really been pushing hers (I'm impressed with her growth & drive - she's shown a lot of emotion & heart in her singing lately)
I suspect Jennifer's voice is powerful enough to have pushed every week all the way to the final with no diminishment

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 20 May 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah... I predicted it would be Jennifer and Fantasia; if so I'd have a tough choice. Diana's surpisingly good, but I have to base my decision on which singer I'd find the least annoying when heard repetitively (inevitably) on Top 40 radio. And I'd TOTALLY prefer Fantasia.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 22 May 2004 14:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The article is right on certain points. However, the notion that "The show has lost its innocence" is naive and misguided. These problems with AI have always existed since the first season, they are just drawing more attention now.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Saturday, 22 May 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. When you can sing a K-Ci and JoJo song and STILL destroy your competition, you are a serious talent.

Simon's comment about "You are the best contestant we have ever had in all the world" was severe hyperbole, though.
