Suddenly there are lots of people posting whose names I don't recognise. A large number of them are even saying interesting and funny things.

So go on, talk about yourselves here newish people.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm here, i'm queer, get used to it.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I doubt I fall into the interesting/funny camp, but since I tend to go months without posting, it seems appropriate to reintroduce myself.

Live in Brooklyn NY, take work where I can get it -- office temp, freelance writing and editing (usually corporate drivel), etc. -- spend every other waking minute making or listening to loud, repetitive music, and I never get enough sleep. I post more frequently to ILM than ILE, or at least that's been true in the past.

Hurlothrumbo (hurlothrumbo), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

My name is Strongo and I'm the only Gay in the village.

gaybo gayington (starry), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I stay in Edinburgh. I make slow, sad, music with my guitar. I make hyper-pornographic art with my Photoshop. My life is pretty much back on track after a shitty 2003 and I have the best haircut I have ever had in my entire life.

hmmm, Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i clothe my superiority complex in a self-depreciating auro. dig the double irony. i just wanna be stevie nicks and eat james chance for breakfast!

aura. all the typos are deliberate

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, I'm Luigi Vampa. By amazing coincedence I seem to have the exact same email address as another poster who has since moved on. But I am entirely not that other poster, and am in fact someone else.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

good. that other fool smelt like wee.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My name's June, I'm 27 and work at a riding school in a small village called Friday Street, Surrey, UK. I generally lurk, but have posted with a fakery once or twice. I listen to all sorts whilst mucking out: my favourite artists are MDK, The Lilac Time, Black and the classical guitarist, Richard Stevenson.

June Hobbs, Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi June!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 22 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi there! I'm looking for a decent scanner / printer / photocopier.

June Hobbs, Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Been reading this thing for about 9 or 10 months but never intro'd myself. Lazy 18-yr-old student living @ home (for the next few months at least) in Limerick, Ireland. First post I made here really whiney and I regret it. Discovered this place via Momus via Reynolds. Musical heroes: Bowie, Eno; Literary heroes: Ballard, Camus, PKD. My opinions are so hackneyed that someone usually beats to me to saying what I want to so mostly I just lurk.

fcussen (Burger), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Be bold, sir -- say what you have to say or elaborate on what you think might be a neat point.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

or mock people you dysagree with.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

hello.. i posted here a few times about a year ago (and also played football against you lot!) but seem to have been posting a lot more lately. I live in london and i'm quite dumb, but kind of pretty although this doesn't really get me off the hook when i say dumb things in an internet forum.. unless maybe if I were to post a huge picture of myself reading a book naked on a sofa with every post I sent, actually that doesn't really help either. I know of this place through people from that belle and sebastian internet hobby. I make pretty good chinese food. and curries.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm quite dumb

Er? You've never seemed dumb to me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I rarely post on here since ILB was set up but I'm feeling friendly today. I support West Ham and have a small piece of Butch Cassidy's wallpaper.

MikeyG (MikeyG), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

and my sperm count is considerably higher than dyson's
hey man, i'm all about quality, not quantity.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading about sperm count from a guy named after a vacuum cleaner is creating a mental image I'd really rather not have right now :)

C J (C J), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

My name's Dave. I'm an artist based in Manchester. I write as well and run a gallery. Oh that's too business-like, so I should also say I don't like gardening or something. Which is true. I don't mind if you tell me I'm annoying for thinking I'm right all the time.

run it off (run it off), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to pretend, for a moment, that I don't post here.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey get back here!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, you can pretend that I do post here if you'd like.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 22 January 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello, I'm jel, I would say I'm a happy melancholic. I like rock, books, cricket and films.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Famous Athlete from The Silver Jews Bulletin Board alerted me to this site sometime last summer, and I've been here ever since. I work in radio in Arkansas. I'm a 30-year old bass player with a broken nose. I drive a pick-up, I love people, and I can't figure out why whiskey is suddenly making my jaw hurt. In a way, I think that it might be kind of fun to travel around the country, building cellphone towers. I'm still thinking about buying a motorcycle, as soon as my girlfriend goes back to Australia.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Once of the council of ILX elders - 39 years old, living in London. Office worker with attitute, member of the happy single set.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

My name is Gear!

I am 29 and live in Los Angeles

I work in TV

My favorite band of all time is U2, Bono Vox rox

I grew up in Illinois outside of Chicago, hence my loyalty to good Chicago labels (Thrill Jockey, Drag City, Bloodshot)

I'm very left-wing, except when it comes to the coke dealer who called me a "Republican fascist asshole" after I kicked him out of a party, saying to him in a line regrettably echoing something a Star Wars character said: "I don't like your type of scum."

I DJ parties sometimes, usually theme parties. The last one was a "campfire party" at which country music was played, upcoming soon is a "future party". After that, I'm hoping for a rock party of some type so I can play the likes of AC/DC, American Deathray, BOC, Iron Maiden, etc.

I read about two books a week. Last one: "The Wanting Seed" by Anthony Burgess.

My roommate is a would-be actress who plays nothing aside from Ryan Adams and the Postal Service, two artists I could easily live without to say the least.

I'm single. Where da laydeez at?

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 22 January 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

My name is Bryan. I'm an Aquarius who likes long walks in the park, candlelight dinners, ballroom dancing, and cribbage.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Gang, I've been away for a couple of weeks, what's shakin--HEY!

Huckleberry Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Jeanne. I like loud music. In person, I'm shy. 'Round these parts, I'm not. I have a cat named Enzo. He's 9 months old.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Huck, I laughed at that and therefore I must kill you.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to be a half-assed poster to ILM a couple years ago, but then just disappeared and have come back in the last few months, and since discovering ILE, spend a LOT more time here. So, I suppose I should introduce myself...

I use my real name and email address, and I live in London (Highbury). In fact, I moved here exactly a year ago tomorrow. Yes, I have a Vespa (1974 Rally 200 and it is mucho sexy), and I do indeed like it, although it's currently in Tillsonburg, Ontario, which makes me sad. I'm 33, and up until a year ago, I lived most of my life in Toronto. It's a great city, but I felt like I was in a rut, so I packed up my troubles and moved here to the UK with no real plan. I was tired of just hanging around and smoking pot with my friends all the time, which probably sounds OK but it was becoming routine. As a result the last couple years are a bit fuzzy.

As of last summer I've been working as a "consultant" with a small agency, doing communications work for big-ass companies. The job isn't exciting, but it pays the rent and that's that. I am also still a music writer for a few mags (mostly Exclaim in Canada). I did a lot of work at college radio and I even worked at a record company for a while, but didn't really like it. I've always had a healthy obsession with music, so I'm glad I'm on the outskirts of the 'biz'. I've had the chance to interview tons of bands I really like, for which I'm terribly grateful. Some was for mags, some for radio, webcasts, etc. I used to also webcast a lot of concerts, a job that I really liked. Yeah, I kept some of the master tapes...

I watch and read too much news, which has made my quite cynical (I love/hate Adbusters magazine, which says a lot). I had a rather dull, suburban middle-class upbringing, and think I'm a reasonably well-adjusted, socially aware person. You might even like me if you met me. I've been to one London FAP and will go to more since you seem like a nice bunch.

I do other music/DJing/web stuff with some friends here: http://www.globalpopconspiracy.com. There's a pic of me (and many others) at a Christmas party I had a few weeks ago here:
http://www.houseofhotsauce.com/extras/gpc/xmas.html

I'm not feeling very witty right now and I'm sure I'll wish I had written a more interesting introduction later, but I'm still at work and want to go home.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Chris, did you laugh when I did it upthread too?

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I think I just rolled my eyes.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the second time was just the kick that joke needed.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi Rob. Hi Adam.

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi I'm Kate from Brisbane, Australia. I have reasonably strong ties to ESOJ. I used to be a huge Soul Coughing fan, not so much these days. I study fine art. Everything else about me is fairly disinteresting.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm paulhw. i latched on to ilm a few months back, liked what i saw. i used to DJ house music, gave up when it got boring. i live in brooklyn NY, do freelance writing and university teaching. 29 years old. an incurable music devotee. don't feel funny today, but i have been before. O-N-E

x-post! hi kate. erm, would you hate me if i said you mean uninteresting? yeah, i would too :)

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Im confused. Not usually, just right now.

I thought you were somewhere in Australia where there wasn't any hip-hop? Or you moved in part to escape such a fate?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I enjoy horticulture and taxidermy.

El Spinktor (El Spinktor), Thursday, 22 January 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

funny thing is I went to write uninteresting first and then changed my mind at the last minute. That'll teach me to not go with my instincts. I'm going to make a really bad high school teacher, I can see that already :)

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

heh, sorry bout that. disinterested = have no investment in the outcome.
ned, i was in australia, waiting for a new visa. See, although I've lived here (Brooklyn) since 2001, I'm an Australian who has lived here on various work visas. But now I have my green card, and live here permanently.
so yeah, a fine memory you have Ned...

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah i looked it up (disinterested/uninterested)

I'm not proud, I know I'm shit at spelling/grammar :)

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i gave a lecture last week in front of a few dozen, and talked about someone's "wiseness". Stopped for a few seconds, then realised I meant wisdom. Embarrassing.

paulhw (paulhw), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

that's a good trick, Paul, it makes you seem more human to your devoted listeners

run it off (run it off), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi. I like stuff.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

But THINGS, do you also like THINGS?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Stuff AND things.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you just LIKE stuff and things, nothing more intense than LIKE?

run it off (run it off), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

We're just friends for right now - trying to take it slow.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Stuff really hurt me once before, okay?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

don't let stuff get to you!

run it off (run it off), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh I tried, but failed miserably. The seductive power of stuff is nothing to be trifled with.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, Luna, where ya been?
I been looking all for ya baby. Lissen, you wanna come over later tonight? Yah, I gotta a sinkfulla dishes I need you to do. You're the best.

STUFF (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Dammit not you again. YOU KNOW YOU BELONG TO ME, STUFF.

THINGS (Ned), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

*runs off in tears*

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

M Matos (M Matos), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yellow, my name is not actually That's a Goddamn Lie. Not sure how I found this place, but surprised that I didn't find it earlier (although I remember someone telling me about 'this discussion board called I Love Music' many moons ago). Only just got the concept of logging out in order post something stupid / pointless / potentially embarrassing.

29. Originally from Dublin. Living in Brooklyn. Working in a fairly typical office type job. I like both stuff and THINGS, particularly the ones that make noises and have bits that light up.

That's a Goddamn Lie (Liar), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oooh the ones that light up are the best. I can feel myself being sucked back in... someone stage a goddamn intervention already!

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That reminds me. Canadian Idol auditions are coming up, and seeing as this is my last year of elegibility (max age is 26), I really wanna go for the gusto.
I was thinking of doing that song "I like to move it, move it." Is that by Mad Professor?

Luigi Vampa (Horace Mann), Thursday, 22 January 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello. I'm Mark, I'm 30 soon, I'm a born and bred Londoner from the right side of the tracks. I'm dating a girl called Sarah who occasionally posts on here, and I've been on ILX about 2 and a quarter years. I go to most London FAPs, but every time I think I know everyone, someone supercool pops up (hi Rob B!).

I am really comfortable here, though occasionally I throw a spaz.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

hi. i'm lauren. i live in new york city. i like tacos and '71 cabernet, and my favorite color is magenta. i'm pure dynamite on the dance floor, if anyone was wondering.
i'm sort of a nanny, but for grown-ups, and kind of like the guy at the circus that goes around with a pooper-scooper but instead of elephants i follow bands.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 22 January 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I am a robotic work of the devil, but aside from that my life is pretty unremarkable.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi. I'm Bakhtin. I'm a former Londoner now living in Los Angeles. I work at Sony Pictures. I also work at building this ludicrously enormous archive of music stuff and things. Stuck behind a Hummer on my commute I sure can get to wondering.

bakhtin, Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm by no means new here (about two years!) but I will nonetheless be new to new posters. I'm 44, live and work in London (systems analyst) and love it here, like to think I'm friends with lots of people here. A regular at the London social events, anyway. Single (I was married for 23 years until 2001!) but I have had dates with two terrific women this week. I am not reading or posting too much of late - see a thread called My Eye Problems for the explanation, if for some reason you're interested. Love music (lots of kinds) and books (ditto), also YV, art, films, comics (I was professionally involved in them years ago) and the like.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 22 January 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey buddies, I've been gone since about Christmas. Did I miss any--wait a minute! -- Horace Mann

Oi, hi Horace, you pieces of Man'!

...Hulloo,
I'm Tiit. 'm high on air 5-6 times a month, and at other times I watch after my other colleagues who're oftentimes 6-7 feet down below the street level.
Had a happy childhood more than thirty years ago. Live in a little country that's smack in between Latvia and Lithuania. Was in Moscow in '82 when Brezhnev kicked the bucket, o that was fun.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 23 January 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi everyone!

I'm Dee and I have kinda gone back to the world of lurking, but not fully because once you start posting on here on at least a semi-regular basis, it seems you're sucked in for life or something. I welcome those of you who started looking around these parts later than April of last year and semi-quietly thank you for helping move me out of the "new kid" ranks. I turned 24 a little less than a month ago, I still live in Texas, I attempt to balance school and work, I take care of my mother, and I'm totally banal and emo. I can be a really good friend. And I like Duran Duran. Just thought I'd mention that last bit just in case you hadn't caught it before. ;)

As Sweet As Melody (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 23 January 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Matt. It's quite easy to tell from the email. I think I've been here about two years now. Hello.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, Matt.
I'm a year behind.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Time becomes meaningless after a while here.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I once spent an entire November refreshing new answers and swigging from a bottle of single malt.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, 2003!

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt - Introduce me, please, to the meaning of single malt.

(English nor American ain't my mother's tongues, so all this "malt" thingy's been slighty confusin' me ever since I noticed that Public Enemy found fault with it...)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Passable explanation of single malt vs blended: http://www.soyouwanna.com/site/syws/scotch/scotch.html

lyra (lyra), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The vast majority of scotch sold is blended, some strains of malt for flavour, and flavourless grain whisky for volume.

A single malt whisky is one that is unblended. Like a single-varietal wine it has come from the one source.

Now, I'm not about to start getting in to the snobbery inherent in malt-drinking (which is possibly even worse than ILM for "I love something more obscure than your love" irritating cliquishness), for the same reasons that I won't tend to launch into people for their tastes in wine or whatever - every palate is different. Suffice it to say that it's a subject which quite a few people get exceedingly uptight about.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post: Lyra infinitely more helpful than me)

Matt (Matt), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(oh-kay then. thanx)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Lyra's dad on blended vs single malt: "Just please promise me you'll always drink your Scotch neat"

lyra (lyra), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

for the uninitiated, "neat" means no ice or water or god forbid club soda. people add them to water down the scotch so that they can swallow it. i've heard claims that adding water "opens the nose" of the whisky, but so far as i can tell it really just means you're too much of a wimp to handle a good strong scotch (;

lyra (lyra), Friday, 23 January 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Not much point introducing myself till I've got a codename I'm happy with. At the moment I'm not sure who I am, and so my posts are all over the shop. My favourite group is "Cable", I do know that.

I'm Cathy. I've been lurking and posting very occasionally for about a year. I'm 18. I've been living and studying (languages) in Glasgow since September. I love music, watch a lot of films, and have a lot of very confused ideas about politics. My life doesn't look very interesting on paper, but I enjoy it.

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, this thread sure got big fast. I hate that. I love everything else.

[i have been posting on and off fr two years] [!!!]

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Matt, age : too old, musical ability : apparently in decline, residence : London, currently in need of a haircut, enjoys walking home from work at 1 o'clock in the morning (distance - 4 miles). I just posted a Rough Guide to musicians that committed suicide on ILM and I'm vaguely worried that people will find it offensive, which wasn't the idea. My band's new album was just criticised on Pitchfork (by another ILX poster) for being derivative, and I'm a bit embarrassed because it's essentially true. I've said enough.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Sean and I'm a Scorpio. Despite being here all the time I can't keep track of all the name changes some of the regulars go through. Most other people seem to keep track just fine. I considered throwing a little fit over it, but figured that wouldn't really help. I had a romantic but not sexually explicit dream about another ILXor last night, but I won't say who it is. I look good in a suit.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I started posting in 2002, originally as Nathan Barley, in the days when TvGoHome wasn't completely lost in the mists of time. I am trying to post in non-sport threads. I sport a massive complex about being robbed of the prestingious award of trig brother winner 2003. I am also marvelling over the depth of the voice of the woman on Trisha at the moment who looks about 12 but has had several kids and who discovered her parents were swingers. I am reassured that the swinging parents are plug ugly, which is the way these things should be.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 23 January 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

My name is Scott and i am 35 years old and i live on Martha's Vinyard Island with my wife Maria and our 13 month old son Rufus. I am a full-time housewife and i also write about music for the Village Voice newspaper, which is a Communist newspaper published in New York City. I mostly post on I Love Music, but every once in a while i stop in here and debate about snack foods and John Huston movies. I also started an ilx forum called I Love Books and we would love to see you there so that you can tell us all about your favorite books! Cool? Cool!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 23 January 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a 27-year-old male from Memphis.
I spend an inordinate amount of time on ILM and various other music-related sites.
My job- litigation technology support(zzzzzzzzzzzzzz)- requires long hours, but not much *actual* work.
I love music (I am coming to terms with my inner-rockist), break-dancing (which I vow to master), and visiting my friends who are in various locales and states of arrested development. I sometimes drink too much and end up passed out naked in the bathtub. I play guitar (poorly).

p.s. Pleasant Plains = Peat Moss? It’s a small Internet after all.

I like knitting. I like Law and Order (new franchises and original recipe) and spotting all the broadway stars who turn up. I like American, British and French girl singers of the 60s. I have no job skills.

donna (donna), Friday, 23 January 2004 05:25 (twenty-one years ago)

My name is Charles Hatcher. I am cofounder of and main conspirator of clip-pop, cut’n’collage reproducers, Ookie Cookie. Born Charles Tiberius Hatcher on 21th February 1983 in Belfast's city hospital, I was the eldest child of Margaret and Dennis Hatcher. As early as my second year in primary school, I was singled out as being “gifted,” especially in the fields of music and rudimentary philosophical thought. “Like Jimmy Durante's nose and Audrey Hepburn's cheekbones, Charles' ear is a very special organ indeed,” my school head, Samantha Dunhill, was recorded as saying.

I proceeded on to a grammar school education, where I captained the soccer team, played first oboe in the orchestra and received acclaim for my portrayal of Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream. It is also where I managed to rake together four A grades at A-Level, in music, physics, English literature and biology. On this success I was accepted to Trinity College, Dublin, where I studied English and philosophy. For three years I persisted in providing top-mark material after top-mark material (my second year theses for both subjects, “Why Shakespeare is the literary equivalent to paint without canvas,” and “Religion?: Don't be silly,” though rather taboo, won me an award which was to be presented by famed poet, Seamus Heaney, though, not very fond of idolatry, or, indeed, “Famous” Seamus, I declined the dividend) but in my final exams, instead of answering the set questions, I would write, instead, ten-page texts on how I would rather not have my intellectual merits transmogrified into a sheet of paper solely to humour a one-dimensional, dispassionate society. As of yet, I still am sans degree.

University wasn't a complete waste though. I had enjoyed a healthy social life, based largely around my position as synthesiserist in varying quasi-successful bands, most notably The Brandenburgs, The Female Eunuchs and The Dandi Toksvigs. Having shared many a bill with equally semi-renowned punk band Creatures of Love, I became close with their guitarist and fellow Belfaster, Reggie Chamberlain-King. We both quickly abandoned our individual projects and began working together to deconstruct sound only to build it up again in the musical equivalent of papier-mâché – popier-câché, perhaps? – under the guise of Ookie Cookie. Now we accept any requests to remix a band’s music, otherwise we simply use our vast record collection as mix–fodder.

I am currently making a living as a librarian and as a freelance essayist.

Hi, I'm Laura - a part-time lurker (that's what I call myself, anyway - really, I just forget about the internet for days at a time - please don't hate me for that) who occasionally goes on posting jags. I read, I write, I edit. My musical preferences lean toward blues, bluegrass, folk, and some jazz. I like movies, but can rarely stay awake during them (same for TV - if my mind is not having to interact it happily shuts down). I have two boyfriends who are quite wonderful people. I am the proud caretaker of two dogs, a tortoise, a hamster, an old rat, and a hedgehog - and I spend a lot of money feeding the local wild squirrels and rats, via the birdfeeders in my yard. I live in Florida, but am a California native and am working on getting back to the west coast as fast as I can. And I have a normal sperm count for any healthy, 30-year old woman.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Friday, 23 January 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

How very American of you. Next you'll be blowing me away.

Charles Hatcher (musenheddo), Friday, 23 January 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

for someone who has two boyfriends, one would think your sperm count would be a touch above the norm for a healthy, 30-year old woman.

Hallogallo, I'm Baaderist, 28, currently living in Prague (as a result of a now long-standing but now fading fascination for post-communist countries), although I grew up in Los Angeles and studied in France.
I've been working for the last 3 years as a junior bureaucrat for a big international organisation, but i should leave that job (and probably this city) in April. I may start a PhD in NYC next September.
These days, I mainly enjoy mainstream RnB and hipster-friendly electronica these days, wordy European cinema (Rohmer, Resnais, Wenders).

I am not the Marianna from the Sinister list. I am not new, but I don't post very much (i think). Because I live in the spiritual home of ILX, Crouch End, and I sometimes to London musical gigs, I often see ILX people at non-ILX events. I lived across the hall from Geeta in college and we both came to ILX independently. I grew up in Michigan, went to school in Boston, and moved to London in 2000. Many ILXors know my husband - he got me an XBOX for Christmas.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn right! Got a hat-trick last night!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And cut my knee to shit!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

On Champ 93 I bought myself for Sheffield Wednesday. It was weird to say the least.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought Nicky Southall on Champ once when I was playing as Cheltenham. He never played, cos the day after I bought Ronald de Boer and Luis Enrique.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Bastard.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

hot damn, that knee thing is really freaking me out, can you permanently ruin yr knee by opening a cut on it week in week out playing football? i swear i've had this cut on my knee since before december 2003, i'm starting to worry i've buckled all possibility of it healing properly. it's gunna be a horrible pink scar one day. aaaaargh.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It was one of those December 'out of contract' things, tying him up before those bastards Swansea could get their hands on him.

Then come June, when he joined us, we didn't actually need him anymore. I presume him and Julian Alsop's conversations on the bench must've been great, though, till we went a goal down and had to bring Alsop on so Landry Zahana-Oni and Daniel Fahrenholz could take turns kicking balls at his head and hoping one of them went in.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I play on astroturf = I have knees like pink cheesegraters /= my left knee is kinda permanantly knackered inside but that's from a totally different injury (I think there's a thread somewhere).

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Medical advice - my KNEE.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

but william my knee! it bleeds!

i play on astroturf on a monday - cuts-a-go-go (don't try out-hardman me southall! :) and on a tuesday i play on that synthetic grass stuff tht's been installed fr dunfermline's REAL ACTUAL PITCH, it's awful. i still stand by my idea that celtic install a red blaze park at parkhead. glasgow youth teams do amazingly well at home in scottish cup to travelling teams because they play predominantly on these red ash parks and the travellers jst can't play on it. it's a different game! celtic come on do it!

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

we'd win the european cup.

cozen (Cozen), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

but william my knee! it bleeds!

In which case you go in the reserves.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You cruel bastard.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Never play football with academics.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:55 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no room for crocks at Whaddon Road.

I fear I must start a new game of CM4 as Cheltenham, despite the fact I'm currently doing OK as Darlington.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Between us we must have 20,000 posts and we're pissing about on the 'Introduce' thread talking about football knees. GO TO BED ALL.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 January 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, I'm Alex in NYC...and YOU'RE WRONG, YOU FATUOUS CHEESE-MONKEY! I enjoy: KILLING JOKE, fondue, beer and arguments. I suffer from: benign positional vertigo, tinnitus, heart-burn and several food allergies. I work in the significantly less-than-lucrative field of journalism and will be a father in about three months time. My favorite films, if you were to ask me right now, are "Blow-Up" and "After Hours". Despite being 36, only just today (1/23/04) did I acquire a learner's permit to drive a car. I love the taste of mozzarella cheese with tomato and basil (caprese) but abjectly loathe ham and salmon. I think people who recline their seat back on airplanes without first asking for the consent of the passenger seated behind them should be shot in the kneecaps with a sawed-off shotgun at point blank range. I think there's a special place in Hell for the guy who invented the car alarm, and I think people need to learn to be a bit more considerate with umbrellas and cell phones.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

No. South Park's not for another hour.

Anyway - to drag us back on topic -

Hello, I'm William, and I am 20 years old. I live in Croydon, setting for a soon-to-be-popular sitcom about nuns starring Jo Brand. I have no fashion sense, and not much more sense of anything else. I am like this all the time, except for when I get angry, in which case I get like this but worse.

That is my real surname, and I wish that was my real middle name.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Deedpoll.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately, I am also live in mortal fear of my parents.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

As well as sleep under mortal roof of my parents.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Change their names too.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Should I sleep in my bedroom or on the futon in my music room?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

change their roof!

back to knees goddamit.

cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Bed. Futons will only fuck your back up.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

My back is fucked. I think it's the bed wot dunnit.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a quite big pink scar on my right knee, incurred from falling on curry jar when I was either nine or ten. Not as impressive as it used to be since my leg has grown somewhat bigger and hairier.

Futon will only exacerbate it, then. Spring mattresses far better than foam.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

ARGH! Say futon, damnit!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I did, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

24, State College PA. I write and I library clerk (I surf ILX during the latter). I don't go to school and I'll be surprised if I ever do again. Trying to find a full-time job (as opposed to my current full-time hours/part-time pay) here at Penn State so I can save up money for a year and move to NY. I get told I'm wrong a lot but I think I'm right.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Tell me to sleep on it, you fule.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But that would be bad. I've been sleeping on a sofa for the past eleven months and I can hardly stand.

William Bloody Sw#gart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but this is like a proper futon thing.

Why are you sleeping on a sofa?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Really rather not say.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Fair enough. I'm off to sleep on the futon. G'night all.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Night.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

...falling on curry jar when I was either nine or ten.

Seems it's time I introduced my glass-inflicted childhood injury as well.
Hey, please meet the boy who dropped a half-full bottle of lemonade on a concrete staircase and then dropped hisself, arse first, into the sizzling remains of what had a moment ago been a pretty decent half-full bottle of lemonade.

Hi, I'm Jack R. AKA Squirrel Police. I'm nearly 20 years old.
I've been posting irregularly since 1999-2000ish.
I swear a lot when I'm drunk.
I don't get many responses because either A) I'm so damn good
at debating I shut the opposition down or B) My arguments are
so illogical and lame most people throw up their hands in
disgust and move on.

Also, I live in Alaska, and that's the honest truth. Woohoo!

Oh yeah, _Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh_ is the best Magma
album and I'm Passing Open Windows and Phil-Two are the funniest
people here bar none.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Your measurements, what you'll do on the first date, whether you swallow...that kind of thing!

Sorry chica, I love you really!! ;-) xxxx

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

er, well people can see my picture if they click on my name, measurements are ample. you don't get anything on the 1st date.
i don't swallow.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Erm..! ;-)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oh,ok! I live in Long Beach, CA (rocket launcher points towards Belmont Shore)
I have done a great many things but when I say them people think I'm a braggart or obnoxious or just annoyingly American so I won't do that.
I do legalish work right now.
I am 39. No kids. Guardedly single at the moment.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:43 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks! ;-)

run it off (run it off), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Hooray! *applauds*

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I for one promise not to think any worse of you if you tell us a couple of things that you've achieved. I like achievement.

run it off (run it off), Monday, 26 January 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

1) I get on fairly well with women and get plenty of
safe no strings attached sex but
am afraid to say that here and get scoffed at by everyone
for a variety of reasons

2) Okay so I play and sing and write guitar - WHATEVER
everyone says. But I've actually made money at it, $1000 or so.
This is over the course of about three years but I'm still
proud of this acccomplishment.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

1) If you're cool with it, good on ya!
2) Well done you!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm 26, and yet another american living in london.

PinkAja (Pinkpanther), Monday, 26 January 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

You really don't swallow?

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 26 January 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

really.
never heard a complaint about it.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 26 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose once it's out it's out so it shouldn't matter. It does seem kind of like rejection to me, though - "I am making it unequivocally clear I don't like your spooge in my mouth".

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

damn right i don't like your spooge in my mouth!
at that point i don't see how a guy could be feeling rejected, i mean....

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean what?

How do you feel about women's juices in your mouth, or if you prefer, how do you think men should feel about that?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't CARE how they feel about it in general.
i only care about how the person i am with feels about it.
besides, head is not the be all end all, it's part of the teasing that leads up to the eventual spooging, so it's mostly moot, actually. the trick to giving good head is to keep him on the EDGE of spooging but NOT have him spooge.

Oh this is ridiculous! No one wants to hear about "What is sex like with Orbit?" Email Mr. Telecom if you want to know from a boy's perspective.

! Please continue w/ regularly scheduled thread.

I thought I did? Hi, I'm Ned, I exist.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello ilx, my name's Phil, and I live in Providence, RI. I've been lurking around this site for a while, posting occasionally. I would have posted more, but by the time I check out a new thread it's not so new anymore and everyone has posted back and forth and gone apeshit and declared war on eachother and I'm too scared to say anything. I like art, music, and Allie's donuts dipped in coffee milk served on a quoahog shell ashtray. I am currently enjoying unemployment very much with the exception of the whole "not earning money" thing.

Sengai, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, don't be scared! Just post anyway. :-)

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, I'm Tuomas, and I'm the token Scandinavian here (though Hanna from Sweden might pose a threat to my position). I pose ignorant questions and views on the weird ways of you Yanks and Britons. I'm 24 and I'm an uni student at the Helsinki University, majoring in Third World studies. I look like this, though I'm not always that kinetic.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello, I am Hanna. I don't post much at all, and when I do it's just meaningless things about how to say cunt in Swedish.

Hanna (Hanna), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't be too hard on yourself; I thing being able to say cunt in swedish is important; especially if your're swedish.

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 30 January 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello. I'm Jill and I don't ever think I've introduced myself properly.
One day I will make it to a FAP in London.

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 30 January 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I missed it - now I need to know how to say cunt in swedish.

luna (luna.c), Friday, 30 January 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

me too! help us! this is vital.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 31 January 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never introduced myself on this board, so I'm Eric, 24, live in Minneapolis, mostly interested in films as opposed to everything. I still think of myself as a lurker here, even though I apparently have used the f-word nearly 10 times on this board alone...

Eric H. (Eric H.), Saturday, 31 January 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

hi eric. every time i see your email it registers as "ephedra"

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 31 January 2004 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I introduced myself somewhere once I think, but I'll do it again. I'm ailsa, 31, from Renfrew (UK), used to post on s*n*st*r a lot but waste my time here now. My husband works a lot, so ILX keeps me company when he's not around. I am ridiculously parochial and mostly post about Scottish football. I don't know enough about anything else - I find that knowing a bit about a lot makes me look like a smart-arse know-it-all in real life, but makes me feel woefully inadequate around these parts. I like various uncool things like listening to Radio Two and watching Coronation Street, and don't care what people think of me any more. People with affectations make me want to be annoyed (I'm not really given to violence, but if I were...)

I want to give it all up and retire to Spain, but am being somewhat hampered by not having a job.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 31 January 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello, I'm Caitlin, and I don't think I've ever introduced myself properly either.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 31 January 2004 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Darren, and I don't think I've ever properly introduced myself either despite being a 2 year or so poster. I live in Highgate, north London, and I work at Ceefax, the teletext service of the beleagured BBC, as well as doing EFL teaching.

I am a Yid in both cultural and football senses, and lived in Tokyo for most of the second half of the 90s. I habitually take Momus to task in these pages for his assuming he knows more about Japan than any of us.

I haven't yet made it to London FAP but really want to get to the next.

darren (darren), Saturday, 31 January 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi I'm emj. I'm from the antipodes.

emjj, Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ronan, 20 living at home, with parents cos I am a student I guess, maybe running out of excuses.

I've been posting here 2 and a half years now, I'm as big a music person as the rest of the people here, mostly electronic stuff, house/techno/electro, but hiphop and pop too, these days. Main stuff I like musically, Crydamoure/Roule, DFA, Basement Jaxx, Dizzee Rascal, Jay Z, Goodlife, the Hacker, Agoria, Derrick Carter, Rolando, Jacques Lu Cont, Felix Da Housecat, and loads and loads of other stuff, Kompakt too, I forgot.

I'm a bit of a freelancer I guess, in the music writing way, and I study journalism.

My hobbies are a bit random and alco, I like watching football, and have a growing interest in horse-racing, mainly cos I've started winning, I guess my biggest hobby is just conversation and argument and that kind of thing.

My personality is a fairly open book on here I think, and generally, not complicated.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello.

My name is Jim, I'm 22, I live in Southport, which is about twelve miles or so away from Liverpool. Also, Marc Almond is from here. As are Gomez. I also think Brian Epstein went to school here. Dan Dare was invented here and the first ever publication of Portrait of the Artist as A Young Man was printed at the offices of the local newspaper. I live about two minutes from the Royal Birkdale Golf Club, which is where they sometimes play golf on telly.

I graduated in the summer (from University of Durham, did Law) and am living with the parents because I can't afford anything else. I was working in a shop then lucked into teaching law to 16-18 year olds three weeks ago. It's only temporary though.

I think of myself as a writer (and to a lesser extent a DJ) because it somehow justifies what I do. I've had a few things published in places other than the web, but not enough. In fact, I've not had enough published on the web to really justify anything. Newly done blog. Never had anything published under that pseudonym cos it's brand new.

I'll probably move to London in October to do a journo qualification to try and get a job, but only if I get funding.

When there, they'll probably teach me that writing overly long responses on internet message boards is a *bad thing*.

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Sunday, 1 February 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't remember if I DID ever introduce myself properly to ILX, so here goes:

Born in NYC, and am still music/gig mad at 29 (natch). I listen to mostly everything. Basically, if I can hear a beat, I turn it up for a closer listen. Right now, I'm in a techno/dance phase.

Mates call me "Nick", though there are mucho many here;

been on ILX nearly 3 years off and on, since 1999 or summat;

I am currently in Florida, USA, living with Mum, after her health scare earlier this year. (She's doing better now, however.) Anyway, I'm the original "professional jobseeker" as I can spot the classifieds at 20 paces.

My plan for the next year is to get my Masters in London---after a school sabbatical of a few years. My ideal degree (which I've spotted) mixes music and technology.

I don't write professionally, only to express myself.

I've a sarky personality, and am opinionated most of the time, but I've a talent for attracting people by being a good listener (or so I've been told).

RJG (RJG), Monday, 2 February 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Who would have thought? When do the hovercars get unveiled?

Jim Robinson (Original Miscreant), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Dominique Leone. I turned 30 recently, and also got divorced - but it's not too bad, I've gotten to spend a lot more time listening, writing and otherwise enjoying music/art/life.

I've posted to ILx (mostly ILM) since Autumn 2001. Haven't posted too much lately though. I currently write reviews for Pitchfork, and less frequently for a few other places. My site has several songs of mine, so if you're absolutely fascinated by this stirring introduction, please feel free to listen and start my fan club.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Nichole, did you grow up in the UK, or is the Brit-slang just for kicks?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 February 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I've introduced myself on ILM, where I mostly post and linger, but I shall endevour to be more general here.

I'm Nick and I'm 21. I hail from North East Hampshire but have no real emotional ties there. I currently live in Nottingham where I have just started my final semester of a Maths degree. Most people think Maths is hard, but I seem to find it OK and have difficulty working in other ways. I'm currently assessing what to do with my life once I graduate in May, which appears to be a worrying 3 months away. I want to stay in Nottingham as I have grown to rather love it.

The two things people seem to find most interesting about me is that I am epileptic and that I have a deep and irrational fear of reptiles, particularly tortoises and turtles. This seems to amuse and fascinate in equal measures.

My main hobby is listening to and thinking about music. My current loves are Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk and Girls Aloud, so I'm very ILM-centric. I also write about music on my blog, but not very well.

I also enjoy TV, my favourite shows being Father Ted and Seinfeld, dancing in clubs, playing pool and bowling.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm kathryn and i live in edinburgh. I'm 22 and I have a rubbish job. Maybe one day I will get a better one. I have been reading ILX for many years on and off, in fact i remember when ILE started! good times. But I never post because I am very very busy with my real life (or i have intermittent internet access and am a bit scared of talking on the internet where everyone can read me, you decide (the first reason is a lie, if that helps you))

I am wondering what to do with my life. The top five things that always make me feel better are 1. jonathan richman 2. my hot water bottle 3. stretching 4. lauren bacall 5. nice cup of tea and a biscuit. As you can tell I am quite dull.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Rah to Kathryn who has clearly put up with us for many a moon! :-) And how can Lauren Bacall be dull?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Nichole, did you grow up in the UK, or is the Brit-slang just for kicks?

Partly. Jay, believe it or not, the nom just popped into my head when I was thinking of what I could use for my email provider:

Qualifications:

1) Would others remember it, if I gave it to them? (Works like a charm.)

2) Can I remember how to spell it? (Even when/if I'm slightly pissed.)

[I DO have fam in the UK, and been going there since I was 5, so it's not totally unconnected.]

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

hooray ned is brilliant. every time i make one of my intermittent 'yes i've been here for ages, no really, i am a superior being watching over you all without posting' he says hello! i hope he has five things that make him happy and they all happen tomorrow! Aw, thanks. :-) Well, if there's a chance in hell I'll be meeting up with my friend Lola tomorrow before she leaves for SF since tonight turned out not to be a possibility, though from the sound of it she's busy then too. :-( Still, if it happens, a happy thing!

Holy Christ this is a long thread. I have never properly introduced myself, I am ChrisTHamrin the Vth. I am enrolled at a small liberal arts college in a small town where I major in political theory and suffer from academic probation amongst other things. I also got tomfoolered into being a music director at the radio station, hence my further obsession with music. I can't wait until I can go back to listening to albums on repeat for weeks at a time. I am a self-obsessed insomniac who shows little outward emotion, always looks like he just woke up, enjoys politcal extremisms and trying to make people laugh to gain their approval.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to renew my intro; I am Nathalie and have a nasty ear infection. Does anyone know when it will STOP (and can hear annoying people again)?

Hi Kathryn again and hi to the ever increasing tally of Nicks and Emmas.

My name is Rachel, I'm 25 and I live in Hove (H to the izzo etc) in Sussex, England. I write poems. I am also doing a masters in Information Studies or librarianship if you dislike vagueness. When not doing that I work at a university, and live with my hemhem hetero life partner Matt. I like tea and biscuits too, and playing backgammon.

Archel (Archel), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I've described myself as the archetypal ILMer before; 21, white, male, Nick and ILM music tastes. I seem to be an amalgamation of all y'all.

Yikes.

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

"Surely Tim Kash read the part of the Hutton Report describing him as a "worthless charisma vortex with one eye on presenting the lottery". I think the only honourable thing he can do is resign."

Hi
My name is Mitchell. I live in Brooklyn, was born and raised in Tulsa, OK. I am 24, work for a non-profit on food and farm issues. I like buying records, dancing, reading on the subway, and talking about transportation/architecture/urban issues.
I've been reading for quite a while, this is my very first post.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 5 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope Mitchell has some baby oil at the ready.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm, seems i've not done this yet. i'm rasheed wallace (well not really but you know); i like riding bikes, cooking outside and have a large library on soviet history. i write and edit articles for a large national news organization. my girlfriend and i live in cobble hill, brooklyn, in a garden apartment situated between a synagogue and a church -- bells on saturday, bells on sunday.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I live next door to a Baptist church (loud church band and choir on Sunday) and across the street from another church and what used to be a synagogue but is now condos.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm new. I know some folk on here from Sinister. there you go.

KM (No idea for a nickname), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, I'm Aaron from Northern California, I've only been posting for a month and a half. I'll be 24 on Saturday. I play the guitar and try to write songs. I don't really like my songs, but maybe someday I'll write one I like. Then, you'll be sorry. I'll show you!

P.S. I got here through Momus' website. Feel free to hold that against me.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, I'm Momus, and I'm an evil media tycoon. I own and -- when I'm not on here, anyway -- run News Corporation Ltd., a media conglomerate that has ventured into all forms of media: television, film, print, and most recently, the Internet. I also write for Vice magazine and own 20th Century Fox, The Fox Network, HarperCollins, and The New York Post. My net worth is $5.3 billion, but it really doesn't feel like it when I'm stuck here eating roll mops and swigging beer. I mean, how many roll mops or bottles of beer can one man consume? Exactly. Money is pretty meaningless. Power is what makes it all worth it, though, and being able to spread evil and negativity throughout the world. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha HA HA! I control a lion's share of the newspaper industry in Australia and approximately one-third of British newspapers and BSkyB (satellite television in Britain), not to mention businesses in most media industries on three continents. In addition to holdings in the media, I own the LA Dodgers, the National Rugby League, Broadsysterm, and Fox Interactive. I have successfully ventured into the Internet market as well: at least 25% of all posts throughout the ILX group of companies are by me.

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Momus, that is the best thing you have ever written. Please quit now, while you're ahead.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

See what I mean? Like I said, feel free to hold that against me.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you sold the Dodgers, Momus

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, I've never actually contributed to an Introduce Yourself thread, either.

My name is John. I'm 25, live in Chicago, work in the educational publishing field, and moonlight as the keyboard player for the band Canasta. I'm an aspiring arts/culture critic, but I don't see too many ads in the paper for that. In the meantime, I have a blog, but I only update it like once a month these days. ILX's greatest influence on me: it's taught me to love pop.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

momus I swear I saw your cousin and your brother playing tennis in glasgow at the beginning of this week.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

oh. i just wrote "i like popcorn" because i figured i'd throw something out there. but now john is saying real things about himself that are bigger than a love for a particular snackfood. so,
*clears throat* i'm 26, live in chicago. i work in public radio, i just finished a great internship & am now swimming in the waters of freelancing (which i hate). sometimes you'll hear my name on the radio as a producer since i've been freelance producing & not putting together my own stories. that said, if anyone has a local arts story to pitch, i'm all ears. i'm also exercising more & recently started falling in love, hence the cheese-y thread i began today.

KELSEY GET ME A PUBLIC RADIO JOB!!!

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

*waving magic wand*

done and done.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

So I should just walk into my boss's office and quit my current job now, right?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

absolutely.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

My name is Andy.
I like all sorts of Candy.
In preschool I hated having to put on a Dutch costume and dance with Mandy.
I play the drums but have no desire to be in a band-y.
I always keep a bottle-opener handy.
I miss Jessica Tandy :'(
One of my best friends is named Dan D.
I like flying on airplanes and have no fear when the plane is about to land-y.
I'm a 25 yr old male and therefore pretty randy.
I once broke my mom's camera by letting it get too sandy.
I like making up new words, such as vandy.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I guess I should get on the bandwagon. My name is Laura, and I'm 23, and I work at a natural foods grocery store. Some register work, but I get computer projects too (e.g. I’m “working on a project” right now) because compared to everyone else that works here, I have amazing computer skills. I live in RI, but in two weeks I leave for Japan to teach English. Now you know me—hooray!

Laura E (laurae55), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

should i not be using my real name on here?

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think people can google the email addresses, so you should be ok. If you're worried, you can just do a little obvious email address change like me.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm in RI also, we're like the only ones on ILM. I'm just in Newport for the summer though - I usually live in NYC.

Oops OTM

Rupert Murdoch (Momus), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

except that I'm 26 now!

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i should like to leap on the bandwagon too. i'm gemma, age 27, i live in western australia. i write govt policy/wank and am studying for my second uni degree (law). i'm a perpetual uni student, hence my fondness for lurking on websites such as this one as it fits in with my stereotype of general laziness and fear of the real world. i am quite new to ilx though. i was introduced to ilx by a link to the legendary trucker hat/flatmate sex thread.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez, the pressure to live up to that. That's like meeting your future SO at an acrobat orgy.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

tep otm, also, is your name really 'gemily'?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

errrr no, my name is really gemma! gemily is an old nickname, it's a bit of a play on my middle name (lee). most people call me gem.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be a cool name, gemily would.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i got called gemily a lot a few years ago, i think a lot of people thought it was my proper name then.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

2 questions:

Where did you find a link?
What part of W. AU exactly?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 04:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Laura E—what part of Japan are you heading for? Are you doing JET? I did it back in the day, in Chiba.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 24 June 2004 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

hi gemma!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 24 June 2004 04:51 (twenty-one years ago)

hi gaz

and xpost (see how i'm down with the lingo already)

i live in perth. someone emailed me the link to the trucker hat thread. it was so funny, i was nearly crying with laughter.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:05 (twenty-one years ago)

do you like it in Perth? Australia seems SO far away from the US, mainly because it is, and Perth is so isolated from the rest of Australia. It's the kind of place that I'd run away to if I wanted to start a new life.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i love perth! i suppose it is isolated, but i grew up in rural w.a. so it doesn't seem that way to me. and it's a reasonably big city (1.6 million people i think) so we have all the "mod cons". and we have beautiful beaches and it's built around a gorgeous river and it's relatively cheap to live here. i've been to quite a lot of other places and i still love it here.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

From what I've heard of it, it does sound like a great place. But I've mostly heard from people who just visited it, so I wanted to get a resident's opinion.
Rural W.A.? Now *that* seems like a good place to disappear.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:17 (twenty-one years ago)

(I'm kinda fascinated by AU in a similar way to how Gareth is fascinated by the US. Though that probably means nothing to you since you've only been reading the board for a short while)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing is that perth seems a little too small sometimes, like you can never avoid people, everyone knows everyone. but other than that i do really like it. it can be a bit parochial and conservative too i guess, those would be my only real criticisms.

rural wa is gorgeous, the places is so vast (i'm told it's three times the size of texas) that there is every kind of landscape. i grew up on the south coast, i still find it the most beautiful coastline i've ever seen. my folks (who are retired) spend their winters up north, i'm going to visit next week, it's all red dirt and desert inland and the ningaloo reef on the coast. can't wait.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

you haven't visited here? it is a fascinating place! there is much to be fascinated by i think, i am fascinated by it too and i live here.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

lately i've seriously been considering just picking up and moving to AU. doing some menial work on a winery or a ranch or something.

xpost no i haven't :( airfare is very expensive and I barely have enough to pay my bills.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you been to the US?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

well you could get a working holiday visa to come and do that i guess, there are lots of jobs in rural areas (i.e. where wineries etc are). it's pretty hard to just move here on a whim though.

ps we don't have ranches, we have stations ;)

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

no i haven't actually. it's on the list! i think i would love to go to new york and to new orleans more than anything. i think i think more about visiting the cities than the landscape parts, that would probably change once i got there though.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah moving there wouldn't be a permanent thing. just a foolish, youthful venture.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not much of a city person, so when someone says they're thinking about coming here I tell them they have to go out west rather than to any metro area. There is an awful lot of stunning nature out there and you could spend your life exploring it and not see it all.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

australia is an unreal place to come on a working holiday, there is so much to do. i don't believe i've ever met anyone who didn't have a fantastic time here.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Name's Geoff. A Montrealer, now living for the time being in Berlin. Up to Helsinki in the Fall, then Sweden for a couple of months, then back to Berlin (doing the university lecturer circuit). Love all those places: Berlin for its music; Helsinki for my girlfriend; Sweden, well, can't say too much other than Stockholm has some great junk shops.

Been doing a bit of country djing here in Berlin (got mixed up with the folks at http://www.pingpongcountry.de). Generally gobbling up NDW and other forgotten Europop pleasures. Thought I'd left my record collection behind, but seemed to have acquired another along the way. Better, stronger and more refined now.

Little known fact: Slutsky lives in my old place in Montreal. With my records.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Thursday, 24 June 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, is this the first time you've mentioned your Australia thing in the 2 years you've been here, or have I just not been reading the sheepmongers threads?

I'm Chris, I feel that way about Canada. I'm fantasizing about buying a delapidated house in Kandahar, Saskatchewan, as a sort of place to retreat to.

Orbit (Orbit), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I just mentioned it the other day on that "Australians: explain your relationship with the US" thread! And yeah, I think I've mentioned my love for Australia and its citizens on the sheepfuxors thread. I also started this thread: What do you not like about Australia and New Zealand?

Hey Guymauve, I'm intrigued by this pinpongcountry thing, but my German is a bit rusty. What's the concept?
I'll be spending most of the summer in Berlin so this looks interesting.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course I'd rather have someone else, but the only girls that would are at least 2000 miles away. :( Doesn't mean I don't like to do it myself.

Okay, I think I've crossed over from "introduce yourself" to "give me TMI about yourself".

oops (Oops), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Baaderoni, have a look at the link. I found myself djing there when one half of the dynamic duo had to leave town. Night of my life in Berlin, to be honest. 8 hours of boogie, bluegrass and ball-bouncing fun. The set-up: Two DJs, each looking after their own turntable, swapping tunes one-to-one while a round of people play ping-pong, drink, dance and generally make some mayhem. A very simple event, really but not a regular thing. Might happen while you're here, but you never know. I'm here until the end of July. If you want details of the next show, shoot me an email and I keep you updated. I'm trying to get these guys to do a show in Liverpool, if that's anywhere near where you live. Also, they're off to Montreal in September.

Country is quite big here.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, great. Il y a une mailing list par hasard?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure about the mailing list, but that is the way things work here sometimes. Not much in the way of paper promotion.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Thursday, 24 June 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Baaderoni, try this email address to sign up: pingpongcountry@lycos.com

3underscore / ___ / Horizontal. 25, Edinburgh. Fill my days as a risk analyst within a major UK bank, which is exciting, frustrating and stressful at the same time. ILX provides an interface for me which uses as little processor power as possible, and keeps me awake and involved while the servers at my feet work away at my next stupid computation.

Of a night I do a some DJing, I also buy way to many records, and have just thrown a fair amount of money into promoting a night with a friend of mine. Oh, and my real name is Spencer.

___ (___), Thursday, 24 June 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Mzui - mizz ooo eee (it's a Wire thing)

I'm a 31 yr old Scot living in London, been here for 12 years or more. Happily co-habiting, discovered ILX via a blog, immediately stopped writing my own fledgling blog because I found I was nowhere near eloquent enough. I mainly lurk, never really had a prolonged exchange on ILX so I only post when I've got something to say/ask. But ILX is fab nevertheless.

I make music, have put several albums out with bands I've been in (one of which Ned reviewed for AllMusic) and I am still trying to write something at least a 100th as brilliant as Spirit Of Eden, when I do, I'll be happy.

mzui, Thursday, 24 June 2004 10:22 (twenty-one years ago)

This revive made me realise I don't think I've ever done this either. I dunno, I guess I've been here about a year?

Anyway, a 34 year old Scot living in Bristol, where I've been for 8 years or so. Divorced with two kids, so full of fatherly advice. Failed musician for a number of years, including a band that pre-empted the industrial boom in Britain - so much so that when we saw Gaye Bykers covering Ministry, we felt compelled to split up, and a band that featured a french chap I met at a half-japanese show and invited to play with us because he had commented on my Treponem Pal t-shirt. I didn't knwo whether he could play any instruments at the time (although luckily he could). I suppose I mainly read ILM, although I've been posting on ILE more in recent weeks. Working as a civil servant gives plenty of time to goof off during the day for ILX, although I sometimes crop up during the evenings as well.

I have been known to post drunk, from the pub, via my phone.

Can I just say a belated HI! to K*****n? HI!

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I read ILX obsessively but I don't post much because reading it always makes me feel a bit daft. I am 25 and live in a Stockholm suburb. I currently have a cold and just sneezed 15 times in a row all over my keyboard, and am considering whether this means I can go home from work without feeling bad, or not. I am a freelance journalist but I work almost solely for a public radio station. I am currently listening to the new Badly Drawn Boy album and it's so bland it's driving me mad, but I'm about to put on the new Go! Team single which I love. Sniff.

Hanna (Hanna), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, I never did introduce myself either. But it seems like a good day for it.

26-year-old journalist from London. Work's dull (finance) but should get better soon. Other than that I'm into music and books and films and socialising (how original. I'm sure there's more, but I can't pinpoint anything right now.) Like mzui I lurk a bit and post infrequently. (I also seem to be overly fond of parentheses.)

How d'you do and thanks for having me.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 24 June 2004 11:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a freelance Dutch-English translator, mother of a toddling boy, living on Martha's Vineyard, married to Scott Seward (an avid poster on ILE, ILM and creator of ILB, as well as an all-round stand-up kind of guy).

I post in spurts. Lurk often. When I post late at night I am sometimes embarrassed in the morning.

I used to DJ on Radio Volta in Philly - had a freeform show called Psychedelarrhythmia. I love making mixed tapes and sometimes have tape-swapping parties (although now the guests all make mixed CDs). My favorite album at the moment is the Nektar reissue of A Tab in the Ocean. I love Lansing-Dreiden, the Feelies, Nelly, Katatonia, etc., etc.

I lived in the Netherlands for 6 years, in Oosterhout and Utrecht. I was an exchange student in West Berlin and Heidelberg.

I grew up in D.C. and Montana. In D.C., my sister and I were 2 of the only 4 white kids in school. When we moved to Montana when I was 8, my brother (technically my half-brother) was the only black kid *ever before* at our school. My mother is a lesbian and got married to her partner of 20 years a few months ago.

I went to Wesleyan in CT.

I'm writing a biography of Rufus Saxton.

I hope to go snorkling soon, before the jellyfish arrive in the Lagoon.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You should go while the jellyfish are there. It will be far more exciting.

Maybe not.

___ (___), Thursday, 24 June 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

That reminds me - I should buy some A-1 steak sauce. It's supposed to be the best thing for jellyfish stings.

I'm 24 years old. I live in Chicago. I work in reference (polymathic) publishing as a copy editor and fact checker. It's exhilarating work, which is why I've taken to lurking here and making the rare post here and on ILB. I'd like to flex my writing and critical thinking muscles a bit more, so I'm making an it's-almost-july-resolution to engage in discussion here a bit more (at least until I find that fulfilling dream job as a cultural/music/arts/film critic).

When I'm not at work, lately I've been filling my time going to indie rock shows, chillin' out maxin' and relaxin' all cool by the lake, getting bored with the sunday trib magazine crossword puzzle, and developing an appreciation for bad sci fi with a great boy I met a few months back. I'm still trying to figure out the best cta route between Andersonville and Logan Square... (Forgive me. I've been single for approximately 24 of the last 24 years, so I'm a little dopey on that front).

mck (mck), Monday, 28 June 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Chris. I changed my name on here recently because I got a gmail account and thought I should stop using my real name. I am 21 and trying to petition my way back into college after some failings. I've been posting here since December or so and lurked before that. I used check out ilx while I was listening to CDs I didn't like, but had a responsibility to listen to. Now I just don't have a job or much else I feel like doing for the summer. I don't take anything seriously or mean much that I say as a rule and am also trying to avoid the 'political' threads now. Sorry this had to be so long.

I usually take Foster 92 to Western 49 to Fullerton (or Palmer, since I'm often going to Palmer and Campbell). Sometimes I take the red line to Fullerton and take the Fullerton 74 bus over.

Though I always forget about the Damen bus. I only live like two blocks from Foster and Ashland--I really should use it more.

mck (mck), Monday, 28 June 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the damen bus stinks after 10.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 28 June 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

good to know.

mck (mck), Monday, 28 June 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Not sure if it's an owl or not. I have a car, so I usually don't bother with buses. But I've always liked that I can catch a bus right outside my house (Clark and Edgewater) that takes me directly to Wicker Park.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

the damen bus stinks after 10.

Where is it on your list of all-time favorite bus routes, kelsey?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

it's probably #3, actually. it's just such a nice, straight-forward route, you know? but it's never all that reliable outside of rush hour times.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 28 June 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister/roommate has a car, and every time we drive to Wicker Park/Logan Square I am reminded of how ridiculous it is that I easily spend an hour getting there by public trans. I should just start riding my bike more again.

(Clark and Edgewater--that's by the Turkish restaurant with the frightening sign, no?)

mck (mck), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

it would be a nice bike ride, i think. just don't take ashland down. i *hate* biking on ashland.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Biking on Damen's not bad, though, is it?

mck (mck), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only taken the bus a couple of times so far. Both times were nifty.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Damen is a great ride, even beyond the fact that there are actually bike paths on it. it's just a nicer pace. ashland is crowded & people just drive differently on it.

kelsey (kelstarry), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, go ahead then, min svensk vän.

Vitto and fitta, respectively.

TBA (TBA), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell, even driving on Ashland is sticky on that stretch from about Lawrence to Irving Park, when parking is allowed and so cars are trying to back into spots while traffic is moving along at a steady clip.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

My sister/roommate has a car

Haha, I used to live with my brother. But then he moved out. And now he lives in ... Logan Square.

(Clark and Edgewater--that's by the Turkish restaurant with the frightening sign, no?)

Yup.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still luna, I'm still 31, and I still like things. Stuff and I, however, have parted ways amicably, and I have taken up sake bombs to comfort myself.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 28 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Deja vu:

I've never been to that big scary Turkish place where Clark and Ashland meet, though -- how's that?

-- Amateurist (amateuris...), March 11th, 2003

Ha, I live right across the street from that place, Amateurist (on Edgewater Ave.). But I've never actually ventured inside. It gets especially scary at like midnight on weekends, when they close the curtains, pump the music, and swarms of Turkish men park their BMWs on my street. Once or twice, coming home drunk, I've considered it...

-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), March 11th, 2003

I play bass in the Vowels; we make records and play shows up and down the Eastern seaboard but mostly in NYC. I like asparagus, chicken wings, the New York Knicks, beer, jogging, and Alan Silva & the Celestial Communication Orchestra.

Hello. I am new to your fine community. Glad to see that I have been welcomed with such open arms.

I'm a full-time father, divorced, 34. Don't ask about the ex-wife. I live/work/play in SF and the Bay Area. Grew up in Appalachia. I read obsessively and sell software for money.

I can't remember exactly how I found my way here.

Hi, I'm Mark, I'm 6 months older than when I last posted. I have a loose left shoulder and I'm teething, which is ridiculous at my age. I haven't had a weird synchronicity experince on ILX for years, so if there's anyone out there who's my doppelganger, my best friend from primary school, or someone who wants to sell me a new Mini for less than £7k, speak up now!

TBA (TBA), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure how many times I've introduced myself, but here we go again. I am Nick. I am 25. I live in Chicago. I work in an office. I live with my girlfriend, Sarah, who also occasionally posts on ILX, but pretty much only on This is the Thread Where I Say... We have a band that doesn't have a name yet. I am twee and yet not twee.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello, I'm Nory, and I've been on-again-off-again lurking here for quite some time. The quality/quantity of my lurking is directly proportional to the level of my dissatisfaction with work (book editor in New York). I am lurking lots lately. I am 28. Posting here inexplicably makes me a bit nervous, but I did go to an FAP a long time ago (in 2002, perhaps?), which I remember fondly. That is, I think I do -- I have a terrible memory, really.

nory (nory), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It is nice to see you posting here again, nory.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah for Nory indeed! :-) Hey that reminds me, I need to drop you a line! I will e-mail you via your other address.

Ned, I can't remember which e-mail address you have...if it's a work one, it's no longer operational, as I'm at a (supposedly) new-and-improved, step-up-the-ladder job now. But I still check firstnamelastname@hotmail.com, so use that.

Which College?

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

> Vitto and fitta, respectively.

do these have the impact that the english does? ('cunt' is probably the only word you don't hear daily on english tv, the last taboo word). the words themselves seem nicer, less explosive, and i wonder if that has a bearing on things? also, what words don't you hear on swedish / finnish tv?

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, for starters Swedish radio/tv has no restrictions as to what words can and can't be used - there's no beeping out words in songs etc. So I guess most words get used in one way or the other. As for "fitta" (= cunt) it has been a really taboo word. But there's been a kind of reclaim-the-fitta movement going on lately (for lack of better words for the female genitals I guess) so people say fitta quite a bit now actually. There's a show for teenagers at the radio station where I work, a while ago they did a whole show about girls' private parts, and while I did't count, a rough estimate would be that they said "fitta" maybe 50 times in just an hour.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's "vittu", not "vitto", by the way. And there are no restrictions on Finnish TV/radio either, though you won't hear vittu 50 times an hour, I think. There's probably a difference between fitta and vittu though, because in Finnish vittu is the all-purpose curse word; it's very similar to "fuck" in English, there are all sorts of adjectives and verbs and pronouns derived from it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ou..keyiiii... Ahem, in a tongue spoken by Tuomas's distant overseas 'relatives', there's two different words for the wondrous bodypart, "vitt" & "puts". Both are rather seldom used on the telly or on the air, tho, heh.

As for the Russian tongue equivalent, I hereby withhold my kno'ledge and reserve my warm vi'tual handsake for the ilxor who comes forward with that word.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in Norway a couple months ago and they played Eamon's "I Don't Want You Back" on the radio and TV during the day, uncensored except for once when they played the video.

Anyhow, I'm another Nick, soon to be 47, live in Pasadena, CA, been here a long time but don't post often.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno if I've done this anywhere else

Lukas, 26, Los Angeles

Have been here for a year, was in Boston for a while before that. Have yet to find a bar / regular music event that I like. My friends don't, er, exactly share my taste.

Where do the ex-East Coast types that kind of secretly want to be in New York hang out? Oh really? They end up drinking alone?

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm Jocelyn, 23, in the Midwest. I read tons of ILX threads but don't post much, unless it strikes my fancy. Crossed over from ILB via Bookslut. Lived in UK for 2 years and now back in the US, so I feel a bit like a servant of two masters. Oh, I work in a college library. One day I would like to go to grad school. I wish I knew how to play the violin. Some friends of mine lived in Logan Square last year...(cue spooky music)

Picard Maneuver (Leee), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think your band does have a name!

Picard Maneuver (Leee), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

That'd be great, cheers. I was just surprised at how many people have had gmail invites now, I wasn't really angling or anything.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Is your hotmail real*? And can you wait a few hours, as I can't log onto Gmail from work?

*do you know of the attendant problems hotmail has in receiving gmail invites? I.e. add me to your contacts list.

Picard Maneuver (Leee), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes it is, and yes I can, and no I don't but I do now. Cheeeeeers :)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

hi Jocelyn. another library person yay!

gaz (gaz), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ailsa, check your mail!

Picard Maneuver (Leee), Thursday, 1 July 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone want a gmail invite? Drop me a mail at the address listed beneath. Unfortunately I haven't got an Internet connection at my new apt but I'll respond as fast as I can.

Another word in Swedish for the puts (this is hilarious, are there any jews here?) is mutta. This should be familiar for you Toumas, as it means something entirely different in Finnish. :)

Although I haven't listened that much on the radio I think they use the uncensored version of that Eamon song here as well. (There isn't much left of that song in the beeped version, is there?)

Aren't there any Swedish lurkers? I'd like a FAP in Stockholm asap. Or is it really so few nordic people here?

TBA (TBA), Thursday, 1 July 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's me, you and Hanna only. I fear the sophistication of this board tends to scare off non-English-speakers.

I can't believe I said sophistication.

FFS I am rubbish!

Does that mean 07 or have things just slipped a tad?

Mark P-a- (Assumed persona), Thursday, 1 July 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Tuomas>>> Take the ferry over some time and mini-FAP with me and TBA! It will be ultra sophisticated I promise you.

Well, I just might. I haven't been to Stockholm for years, and the ferries don't cost that much. I'll think about it.

Oh, and we should have our own equivalent of those incomprehensible other-side-of-the-world sheepfuXors threads too.

Yeah, and we should write it in Swedish so the others would have no idea what were talking about, and they'd be so jealous! That'd be a good way to practice my rusty Swedish.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I wrong in remembering that the Scandinavian languages are so similar that people from different countries can typically communicate pretty well with each other, despite speaking two different languages?

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Swedish, Norwegian and Danish are. Icelandish is a bit further away from the other three, I think. But Finnish comes from a whole different language tree, it has nothing to do with the other Nordic languages. Estonian is pretty closely related to Finnish, but I understand only about half what Tiit says.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, the friends who told me about that were probably Danish. I had a bunch of Danish friends.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Thursday, 1 July 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I was so thinking of learning one of the Scandinavian languages. Should one just learn Swedish and hope to be understood in the other countries or would it make more sense to learn Danish? Hmm..

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 1 July 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Just long enough for me to say thanks and see you in a couple of weeks.

Mark P-a- (Assumed persona), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello. I've just noticed I'm 367th on this month's ratings, so I'm imagining an in-with-a-bullet ranking like this requires some introduction from me before The Big Meltdown.

(1) I am a 30-year-old male with heavy socialist and Buddhist leanings.

(2) I have just bought a house with my partner in sunny Walthamstow, east London.

(3) I work in a soulless office, design websites, organise live music events and run an online forum of my own.

(4) Until a couple of months ago I was proud to have never written a piece of music journalism. This recently changed with the publication of a long article about my love of the Pedal Steel.

(4a) It was a good 'un though.

(5) I am lucky enough to be in the best band I've ever heard.

(6) I can type really really fast.

Lots of love then - enjoy the sunshine, Huey xxx

You live near Albany, NY? Ohmigod, my condolences. Nice architecture, though.

Ma$onic Boom (kate), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually don't recommend this area to anyone. i live in saratoga springs (it's 30 miles from albany), which is like the center of lameness in the universe. in the summer lots of rich people from new jersey come because we have a racetrack. also there is an outdoor amphitheater which hosts dave matthews twice a year. there are lots of yuppies and suvs here. everything is really pretty and fake-ish. i guess it depends what you like though, some people really like albany.

caitlin hell (caitxa), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha, I have been to Saratoga quite a bit. I also lived outside Albany for some time. But hey, I've seen Philip Glass and Beck at SPAC, so it's not all bad. It is actually a nice place to visit (nicer than Lake George, for example) but I can see what you mean about it being really lame to live there.
