@d@ml (nordicskilla), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I am considering staying up to watch this. This is despite having seen only five of the films under consideration, and not being too bothered about any other than Belleville Rendezvous winning.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No Coppola/Lost in Translation wins, please, God.

Okay, after his speech last night, Bill Murray can win best actor.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Basically, so long as Brother Bear doesn't get best animated feature, I am fine.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't say I'm all that excited, having only seen a handful of the films in question. All I know is that I want "Cold Mountain" to lose.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Johnny Depp will take it.

Sym (shmuel), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Go nobody.

charlize therzon better get it.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

damnit for the first time ever I am going to miss the oscars because I'm going out. Why are they so early this year? Maybe I'll tape them and try to avoid finding out who won until tomorrow night.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

You may laugh now, adam. But when I'm proven wrong you will laugh even more.

Sym (shmuel), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Renne Z. just recently say that she deserves to get the Oscar. For that alone, I want her to lose. And lose big. And for someone to spill marinara sauce on her dress ten minutes before her walk down the red carpet. And for her publicist to be attacked by a roving gaggle of famished wolverines.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

predictions

pic: LOTR
actor: murray
actress: theron (despite my libidinous fascination for her i would like to see her lose thought)

opening monologue: jokes about arnold, WMD, mel, john kerry (if they are brave), stupid hobbit jokes.

big question: will mel be presenting?

ryan (ryan), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

oops the parenthetical should have been after mel, not kerry.

ryan (ryan), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

jokes about janet's nipple

Sym (shmuel), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yes

ryan (ryan), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe this year the idea that billy crystal is funny will finally go away.

ryan (ryan), Sunday, 29 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex Renee actually said - "i think this year the academy will do what's fair" - which is even worse! grrrr... that woman.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

what is she nominated for? ryan, why do you want theron to lose?

hope LOTR doesn't win. This last one was the only one I walked out on. Overrated crap.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a big ass bottle of tequila for tonight. The Oscars are generally seven hours of awful but my friends somehow get really excited about the whole thing. I get excited about tequila.

I hope Lost in Translation loses for everything and Sofia Coppola melts into a horrible puddle of shrill horsefaced goo. And then Master & Commander can win everything 'cause it was the best movie all year bar X-Men 2.

adam (adam), Sunday, 29 February 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

so, is Joan Rivers always a drunken racist?

Sym (shmuel), Sunday, 29 February 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hope "American Splendor" wins for best adapted screenplay. And that there aren't too many Janet Jackson jokes.

J (Jay), Sunday, 29 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Go Johnny.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 29 February 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

or Bill.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 29 February 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a big ass bottle of tequila for tonight.

Me too! And the local pizzeria on speed-dial. I'm set.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

How can I watch this in London without BBC1?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

just one thing before I go to bed..
Johnny Depp looking neat and tidy.. WOW!

jellybean (jellybean), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit!!!! The Paybacks' "Hollywood" opened the red carpet shindig a few minutes ago. BEST MOMENT OF 2004 SO FAR!!! ROCK N ROLL.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"over fifty hottie"... hey dude, turn around. Johnny Depp's behind you!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And can we put an end to the word "really" please?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry if anyone's not watching the pre-show, which is what I'm dialoguing with.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

haha! sofia coppolla looked v. v. uncomfortable.

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

There should be laws against them (or anoynoe, for that matter) playing Madonna's "Hollywood" .

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i think joan rivers is getting a bit senile.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"getting"

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lady" Alexandra Kingley... pan over to her... not the first image that pops into my head at the introduction of Lady Alexandra Kingsley.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

How many years younger than Ben Kingsley is she?

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"did you just swear?!"

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

This Preshow is many times more entertaining than the actual show is likely to be.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is older, Kingsley's wife or daughter?

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ugh. billy crystal. UGH!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh god this is just embarrassing

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael Moore was a good sport... I assume.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that Dianne Keaton is dressing like annie hall came out last summer..

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i thought that was great.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Crystal is worse than Leno, and there's not many people I'd say that about. He's at a Coulier/Custos level of humor.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh the medley ugh

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus... at this pace the medley will be 23 minutes long.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, Billy, I'd rather watch "Paint Your Wagon" than this.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

ha. crystal disparages the president and the camera immediately focuses on tim robbins.

xpost

jesus, no more singing!

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got back from watching tonight's installments of the Orson Welles Fest at the Film Forum, and the Oscars are making me sad already. Somebody put Billy Crystal away.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Argh argh shut up Billy.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't ruin a lovely song from West Side Story with your crappy schtick.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus I think it's a looong shot RoTK will get Best Picture. This is "Lost In Translation"'s night, methinks.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I just got back from watching tonight's installments of the Orson Welles Fest at the Film Forum

yay! i'm looking forward to 'tomorrow is forever'.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Crystal's made gay jokes about 47 times already. Here I was hoping for a few pro gay marriage speeches to be the bread and butter of gay reference at the Oscars.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Bring Me The Head Of Billy Crystal

zappi (joni), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

is there an oscars chat on now?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that Will Ferrell??

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Sam, I'll start one!

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

cool

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Catherine Z Jones is really kind of sexy, no? (why am I watching this?)

Lauren - that's tomorrow, right? Have fun. It's a kooky movie.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

good for tim robbins. so far i'm one for one with my predictions.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:52 (twenty-two years ago)

chat room: diebillydie

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That was the speech of someone who's known he was going to win for a month now, but I'm glad he won anyway.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is this chat you're talking about?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to be Angelina Jolie's cambodian baby.

Carey (Carey), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oh no Robin Williams oh no

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Robin Williams really needs to be kept in a cage. SOmeone invite me to the chat? I'm nearly out of wine.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, GlincyGulon

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Best moment so far: William Shatner walking up to firefighters and saying "Fiber! I want to make it your friend!" But maybe that's just the Canadian version of the broadcast.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Minnesota viewers were just treated to Ed Asner playing Lou Grant for Channel 5 news.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

New York got a replay of the Katie Couric colonoscopy.

nabiscothingy, Monday, 1 March 2004 02:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Belleville gets gypped for Nemo. Hmmph.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

At least it wasn't Brother Bear.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I've still got colonoscopy???

nabiscothingy, Monday, 1 March 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Lucky bastard.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This is true (and possibly the colonoscopy as well)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

First Nicole, now Renee. Pity Oscars. Nothing like 'em.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Bloody blowjob face wins Oscar shocka!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Two down, nine to go, so I hear. I am content. I am patient.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Renee doesn't look as horribly emaciated as she used to.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:22 (twenty-two years ago)

My Oscar pool chances sort of took a blow with Shohreh losing.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus Christ, woman, just shut up.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

it's bridget jones weight. she should be back down to "normal" again before too long.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Bringing non-TV types up to speed (including, er, me):

Art Direction: Lord of the Rings
Costume Design: Lord of the Rings
Supporting Actor: Tim Robbins (Mystic River)
Supporting Actress: Renee Zellweger (Cold Mountain)
Animated Feature: Finding Nemo

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Suddenly this became the USO show away from... away from home.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My name is William Swygart, I have nothing, much to dooo...

And I'm listening to Five Live for updates. Good grief.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Hope - being dead doesn't make you funny.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Please please stop with the Forrest Gump music...

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"you can always just run for governor." wow! bob hope was a psychic too. (alright, I know that was regarding reagan, but still... history repeating itself ad nauseum, et al...)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone invite me, I don't have access to a tv and I wanna know wass happenin'!

Mike Stuchbery, Monday, 1 March 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooooooold on, I thought Bob Hope was dead dead DEAD?!?!?!?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

That was regarding Nixon, I thought. Lost to Kennedy, elected Governor.

Reagan never got close to an Oscar, did he?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha. Bob Hope is dead. That was a clip of him in the crowd at some recent Oscar show. But I did the same doubletake.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

username: mikeybidness

Mike Stuchbery, Monday, 1 March 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

?!?!?!?Can they do that? Are they gonna give him a Deadtime Achievement Award then?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Ben Stiller: still the unfunniest "comedian" out there.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

less funny than billy????

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus he's wearing blue eyeshadow.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Like that's a bad thing.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

They is a witless pair of twats doin the ten-a-penny awards....

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Live Action Short Film - Two Soldiers
Animated Short Film - Harvie Krumpet

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw him and though 'oh i thought bob hope was dead. my bad."

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

He'd look better with something a bit more muted.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

why it's nana mouskouri!!!

j4n (Wintermute), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Speaking of twats, everyone say hi to Sting!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Radio 5 man thinks Billy Crystal sketch of celebrities favourite films of past year 'fabulous'. By the sound of what he is telling us about this sketch... he is deeply wrong.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

what is he doing with that instrument

j4n (Wintermute), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The expert panel is agreeing with him, though. Hmm.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Dotun Adebayo is also very confused by Sting's instrument. "touch of Shakespeare in him".

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Starring Liv Tyler in the Lisa Loeb story

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The '50s glamour look is good to Liv Tyler.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus fuckin' Christ, first the Super Bowl, than the Grammys, now the academy awards with this Sting character? In what universe is he relevant??! What's with the overexposure lately??

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Radio 5 sez Johnny Depp has a bandwagon.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to see Elvis Costello rush backstage after this song and play El Kabong on Sting's head with that guitar.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

How come nobody's talking about the glory that is Alison Krauss? Even the Oscars can't sully her.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

All this might just be enough to push viewers in Europe who were just starting to feel maybe a teensy leetle beet sleepy over the edge...zzzzzzzzz

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Liv Tyler speaking, on the other hand, is not good. Someone's been hitting the diction a little hard.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

But Annie's hot!

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Milo, I was gonna say, she's actually got a much raspier voice really. But that's a good dress.

Wait. First Sting, now Annie Lennox. What is this, a late-'80s Brit Awards?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Even Peter Jackson looked bored by Annie.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Jesus, Radio 5 is having a phone in. No.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I totally thought Elvis was gonna take out that old guy w/his geetar like in "Airplane!"

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Currently former film projectionist talks about films he used to like. Very slowly.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Specifically, 'Inherit The Wind', which got four Oscar nominations in 1960. None of the expert panel have heard of it.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to see Elvis Costello rush backstage after this song and play El Kabong on Sting's head with that guitar.

While that might be nice, I'd like him to stop after a couple bars and break into "Radio, Radio."

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the freq of radio 5 live, wbs?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying Ronnie Corbett's gay

Hello British Viewers, Monday, 1 March 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

909 down here... probably 693 in Glasgow.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Billy Crystal impersonating Robin WIlliams uggggh

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently Will Smith was "doing it" with his wife tonight, right on stage!!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait. First Sting, now Annie Lennox. What is this, a late-'80s Brit Awards?

you mean the B.P.I. awards...

jed_ (jed), Monday, 1 March 2004 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Some bloke just texted in that Van Wilder should be up for best film.

Milkman's just delivered, am wondering whether to drink the orange juice now or not...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

milk delivered at 3am?!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, it's nice like that.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Visual Effects - Lord Of The Rings

Three down, ten to go, is it?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

glasgow's rough.

skinhead jim carrey!

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually Jim Carrey is pretty much every as bit as unfunny as Ben Stiller.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Orange juice calling. Mmm.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I have left my crisps upstairs, however. This may prove problematic.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, the Blake Edwards thing was pretty funny.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry to go back a bit, but which other members of the audience are actually currently dead, then?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think many are zombies.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, the Radio Five panel reckon Finding Nemo was a dead cert for best animated. Grr.

Radio Five panel - LA correspondent, a woman from BAFTA, organiser of 'The Stinkers', which appears to be a more low-rent version of the Razzies, and a film student at USC. They are watching the Oscars at a 'special screening' at LA Correspondent's house.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Have they got some crisps in?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No, so we're level pegging there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a rumour that Belouis Some is lined up for after the break.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They may have nachos, though. But if they do, they're not munching them on air, which is quite crafty.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Roger from Southport should go to bed.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

'Stinkers' man has said he couldn't understand Calendar Girls.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me, or has there been an awful lot of Julie Andrews in this thing for an awards show in 2004?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill Murray was funnier last night.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Julie Andrews is Mrs Blake Edwards, that's why all the cuts to her throughout.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I mistaken, or is this Oscar presentation crushingly dull?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what did bill murray do last night?

mikeB (j c), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

What they need is a spot of Jamie Cullum and Katie Melua covering whatever song it is that Sting's done.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame Boob Delay for the dull. But actually Alex, they're all always this dull and each year you suffer from fortuitous amnesia.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The Independent Spirit Awards. His best male lead speech was great.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Makeup - Lord Of The Rings.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

The whole two people doing a skit at the mike thing always dies a death; just get rid.

pete s, Monday, 1 March 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Radio 5 has now left Peter Bowes' House Of Crisps to report on a correspondent who cycles across South Africa in search of stories.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

But usually, there's at least an incident or two that spices up the proceedings.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sound - Lord Of The Rings

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord of the Rings is fuckin' cleaning up.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Five from five. Best Adapted Screenplay is the biggest hurdle, I'd reckon...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Why did I think sound mixing was going to be the one that didn't go to LOTR? Argh. I'm now 6 for 8 in my Oscar pool -- not good enough!

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Sound Editing - Master & Commander!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

See, that's what I thought was going to win for mixing. Damn.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

LOTR not up for that, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Oprah. Ick.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

what was crystal's "tax audit" line about?

j4n (Wintermute), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, guy says something contentious about the government, implication is nuisance bureaucracy will follw.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 03:48 (twenty-two years ago)

When did Alan Bates die???

So how many "Lord of the Oscars" headlines tomorrow?

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Score - Lord Of The Rings

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

OK. Return of the King is seriously gunning to tie with Ben-Hur and Titanic (like that's a thing to be proud of) for the Oscar record. But it won't happen with that ugly Adapted Screenplay category standing in its way. (Ugly in the sense that I can't imagine it winning against Mystic or Seabiscuit.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Editing - Lord Of The Rings

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Score - Lord Of The Rings

You can say that again William

pete s, Monday, 1 March 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Hearing the orchestra play John Carpenter music is sort of neat, or at least seems neat in the context of the most boring Oscarcast since Shakespeare in Love year.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this still a clean sweep on the cards?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Mitch and Mickey: Better than Sting every single time!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

So missing my crisps right now.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I sincerely hope that Mitch and Mickey get one of those grassroots votes that led to a Polanski win last year.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, the lotr score was pretty good. At least I can remember it.

dleone (dleone), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaaaaaaaaaaah! Just give the damned song award so I can stop really caring for the rest of the evening. (Oh, Depp... right.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Four left for LOTR - original song and Adapted screenplay are two huge barriers...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

And director -- Jackson'll probably win, but I could see them going for Eastwood in one of those Best Picture/Best Director splits.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, if Return of the King fails to take all 11 and break that record I mentioned, Ringheads will be quick to note that if the series is taken as one movie it handily beats out the two other record-holders. It's all good, though.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd be enjoying this so much more if the show wasn't already heavy on time to the tune of 45 minutes.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:15 (twenty-two years ago)

jack black + will ferrell = gold

dleone (dleone), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

not really

j4n (Wintermute), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Song - Lord Of The Rings - Into The West

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm finding myself in a scenario where a Seabiscuit win in the screenplay category would make me inordinately happy, if only to block off the fucking dam.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all on Adapted Screenplay now.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Not that Mystic isn't the frontrunner, of course, but I mean my God!!!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean relative gold

dleone (dleone), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Still, there's always the acting awards. G'won little Kiwi girl...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

GO DENIS

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The politics of Adapted vs Original screenplay are always odd, but I'd give it to LOTR gift-wrapped on a mithril platter. That's a tough job, especially if you go with the "ROTK standing in for the whole trilogy" logic.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get the Theron-fawning that has overtaken America. She's pretty, sure. But there are a lot of attractive blondes (as that seems to be the criteria for the fawning - check out ESPN's polls) in Hollywood.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Foreign Language - Barbarian Invasions

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Visuals, OK... but I remain resolutely unmoved by Lord's turgid storytelling.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but she was a pretty girl playing an ugly one. acting

dleone (dleone), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Denis is a bitch.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Did they just say "This is the first Academy Award and third nomination for Canada"?

Yay Canada. Does everybody there get an Oscar, or do they just pass it around?

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Two for Howard Shore and one for Denys Arcand...it's a good night for Canada!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Cinematography - Master & Commander

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that LOTR song even in the movie or just during the closing credits?

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, that's weird that they said "third nomination for Canada". It was actually the third nomination for Denys Arcand in that category...don't know if he's the only one who's ever been nominated for Canada in that category though.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Because the Belleville song and the Mighty Wind song actually added something to those films.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Denys! Aujourd'hui il y avait un photo de Tom Hanks, sa fille, et Denys Arcand (qui avait un cigarette et un verre de vin dans son main)...."Tom Hanks louange les invasions!"

cybele (cybele), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

je m'excuse--c'etait la Journal de Montreal.

cybele (cybele), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Six awards left, and it's the big ones...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow. Master and Commander gets a second trophy and not just the sound f/x one. Twice as many as I expected for it.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright. My night's getting ready to end in anger...

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

THIS IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I started this thread, but I only have this to contribute to it:

could Sofia Coppola be any more bland?
could Liv Tyler be any more beautiful?
I'm quite looking forward to Starsky And Hutch now.

That will be all.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The damned movie ended 27 times. That's not good screenwriting goddammit!!!

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Adapted Screenplay - Lord Of The Rings.

It's the sweep. Fuck's sakes.

American Splendor gets nothing then? A shame.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Sofia Coppola has a bright future ahead of her as a hermit. I've never seen someone famous look so frightened to be in public.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not good screenwriting

But is it good adaptation? That's what I meant about the politics etc. It comes up every year, and voters sometimes sway one way (vote for the best product) and sometimes the other (vote for the best process).

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

To put this thing in perspective, Kubrick won one oscar. For special effects on 2001.

pete s, Monday, 1 March 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Hilarious cheesy horn rendition of "Blowin' in the Wind" to introduce Tim R. and Susan S.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

KILL ME NOW

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Original screenplay - Lost In Translation

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Now we know where Charlize Theron's teeth from Monster went...

(OK, that's mean. I liked the movie.)

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Sofia thanks Antonioni first among her inspirations = I heart her

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

damn. i can't witness any of this, as the sole TV is being used for SOCOM II & swearing, from tthe sound of it.

Kingfish Beatbox (Kingfish), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

They seemed to be cracking up over the intro music.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Whey! Radio 5 cuts to Tom 'Talking Movies' Brook! Who's at the Lord Of The Rings party.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Tep, to suggest that anyone putting tic marks next to Lord at this point is thinking about anything other than giving the movie the sweep is to give them too much credit in my opinion.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the sweep. Fuck's sakes.

*whistles quietly*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Antonioni? I don't know how Lost in Translation relates...

cybele (cybele), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(Sorry Eric H., but personally I'm just feeling very content.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But Liv Tyler. And the glasses.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, you should join our Oscar chat.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Triplets Of Belleville is a much better song than Annie & Her Magic Harp.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the glasses. they will rule the world

j4n (Wintermute), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought the musical number from "Triples of..." was pretty great...not least for the bicycle player.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno who was more beautiful - Tyler or Scarlett J.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

You can definitely spot the Antonioni influence in her brother's movie, not that it was very good.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, you should join our Oscar chat.

Give me a couple of minutes here, currently cleaning up my hard drive.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

best director goes to Peter Jackson.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Actor's the only one that's any fun now.

Though if Seabiscuit were to get Best Film, I might die laughing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Was making a LOTR trilogy all that risky? "Gee, how can we get every Dungeons and Dragons player in the world into a theatre?"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah the glasses. they will rule the world

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Which 'cult' director is most likely to get the next Best Director? Does Sam Raimi stand a chance in hell?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose my brand of discontent comes with not being particularly invested in the awards as meaning much artistically. It's more simply a matter of: one movie wins every damned thing = boring, boring Oscar show.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That studio would have been broke if it didn't work, and Jackson hadn't exactly had a string of hits up to that point.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

couldn't peter jackson get a damn haircut? or at least a suit that didn't have smudges on it. . .

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:46 (twenty-two years ago)

couldn't peter jackson get a damn haircut?

I do love the man.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Samantha Morton's fashion sense is painful.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Eh, he did direct Braindead, so good on him.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Actress - Charlize Theron.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(Monster)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Meet the Feebles might finally get a proper full-on great DVD release now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

excellent. first award i've been happy with tonight.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlize deserved an Oscar for Reindeer Games.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Leaving us with Actor and Film... well, Actor, then.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, I love his other movies but he wasn't the kind of guy you'd expect them to give that much money to after The Frighteners.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

How great would it be for LOTR to lose best film after everything else?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember back when Hilary Swank started this trend, only behind it was a nice, subtle performance instead of nervous ticks and overbites?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

she's pretty in real life but she was ugly in the movie, see.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, Ned, don't mind me, I love playing the complainer on Oscar night. (except for last year when Polanski's win caught me on an unexpectedly giddy moment.)

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

"A big shout out to FW de Clerk!"

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel Day Lewis did the same, no?

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

alright i'm going to bed. charlize kinda choked me up so it's time for me to leave.

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Lewis was a gimp, rather than ugly.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Will and Jada the only black people who've appeared onstage tonight?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The difference is that he's a man and not a woman... although with Brody last year, the trend sort of spread to the male side of things.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

With the exception of Errol Morris, the thank yous have been remarkably without an "I'm the greatest, I deserve this award" moment.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Crossing my fingers for Depp to do the same, actually... ironically...

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Oprah was onstage too!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

He should get a fake Indian to accept for him.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Depp's a sellout for showering and shaving before the show.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Or even better, Brando dressed as one.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

He totally should've showered and shaved during the show.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got work to do so I'm going, but Milo and Mark P - you crack me up.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Please, God, let Depp win. And let him accept the award as Capt. Jack.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 04:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Best Actor - Sean Penn (Mystic River)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay Sean. About fucking time.

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't even seen Mystic River yet, but this win is justified...if only for all the times he's been snubbed.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Penn wins the anti-Bush sweepstakes.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Le whew! Nice to see a standing O for a change.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just sat through the whole of Up All Night on Radio 5.

Fucking hell.

Sam - just on the off-chance there's any other people as dull as I am that are sat up without the telly on... it's sort of the DJ Martian live experience.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean he was pretty fucking unbelievable, but dammit what a boringly predictable pick.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Academy in being predictable SHOCKAH

The Oscars™ are now the Grammys™

ModJ (ModJ), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

The little round of consolation applause for Bill Murray was weird. Nice, but weird.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

What a travesty. I quit.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

sad. he'll never be nominated again.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst Oscars ever.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean Jesus. Is the next Star Wars going to take the Oscar too just because it was such a long series?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

SECURITY! A bum as stumbled onto the stage and grabbed a statue.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but did you see how cross Bill Murray looked not to have won?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm so over hobbits.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

And Lord Of The Rings completes the sweep. Wahey. Let's hunt some orc.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I honestly can't remember the last time I watched an Oscars were there wasn't a single, solitary surprise pick. I hope this is the last.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely the first time the city councils of New Zealand have been thanked during a Best Picture acceptance speech.

"wisely overlooked" - fuck you, Jackson that was your best work

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Murray looked like he didn't really care.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

in that "but deep down i'm crushed" kind of way, sure.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait was the deal with Billy Crystal right there? I missed it; stepped out of the room for a moment when the award was announced. Did he get insulted or something?

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

One of winners said he'd dated Crystal's cousin some years back.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I was rooting for Whale Rider, City of God and Triplets of Bellville. None of them won anything.

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely Murray looks like that all the time?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh the memories.

"wisely overlooked" - fuck you, Jackson that was your best work

Hey, I love it too, but knowing how the Academy voters view the world, they would probably look at it askance. Relax.

Anyway, I am content. More than anything else I just see it as a validation in a particular mainstream context for moviemaking as fantastic enterprise -- not simply, as the Oscars have generally favored, meaningful drama or elaborate historical pageant (Shakespeare in Love, Titanic, Gladiator and Chicago all being recent examples of the latter). Arguably Jackson's goal was precisely to create an elaborate historical pageant for a fictive world -- but that leap was something that the Academy has been loathe to acknowledge. Doesn't change the world, doesn't mean that it'll all now be taken more seriously and that Gilliam gets a retroactive Oscar for Brazil or anything, but still, I am content.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I guess the nice thing is that in the midst of all this hoopla, I forgot for four hours that Passion netted over $100 million this weekend. That's my prize.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned's list of recent winners makes me feel better - at least I just don't care about ROTK, where I actively dislike those others. Chicago might be the worst Oscar-winning movie (for any category) ever.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot for four hours that Passion netted over $100 million this weekend.

Hm, pretty impressive! I have to say there was quite a bit of general interest among friends of mine who are hardly religious, so I'm not surprised.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

If I wasn't opposed to putting money in Gibson's pocket (and looking like a scary fundamentalist), I would have gone to see how brutal it is.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay. A pretty predictable Oscars this year, but that's also the reason why I'm $50 richer tonight. (Out of a pool of 17, I ended up in a three-way tie for first. I missed only Animated Short, Film Editing, and Adapted Screenplay.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

no one mentioned this, but it was nice to see Will Ferrell and Jack Black snickering when they mentioned Sting's name. Also, Errol Morris came across as a prick, which is a shame cause his movies are great.

Elliot (Elliot), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anyone see that dress Uma was wearing?!@

maypang (maypang), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It was hard to miss. She looked like a Shakespearian gypsy.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Really, you think Errol Morris came across as a prick? Why, because he said the Academy is finally recognizing his films? I'd have cringed, too, except he seemed so goofy and ill at ease, it was sort of charming.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, that got on my nerves. He just seemed overly cocky/smug for no good reason. I mean, at least *feign* humility.

Elliot (Elliot), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i was really mad when chicago won. whether it is an appropritate link or not, it reminded me of discussions with filmmakers in re the 60s/70s and how the early 60s were a morass of mediocre musicals chock full of a-list talent, and that younger filmmakers and even audiences at that time felt like they needed to do better. where is that impulse today? not that i am anti-popist, i just feel like there is a balance that is missing. i didnt see any good films this year except for city of god.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Even City of God was pretty flawed and overhyped but I was kinda hoping to see it pick up something, esp. for its editing which I thought was superb.

Why was it even nominated though. Didn't it come out in 2002?

maypang (maypang), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Not until 2003 in the US

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it was overhyped and probably flawed but at least compelling. i didnt think much of LiT, except for the cinematography, which was superb. Virgin Suicides should have won (more) awards. As for the Antonioni thing, I have only seen two films of his (Il Grido and L'Eclisse) and I dont think she does as good a job of connecting her characters to larger social issues (while still maintaing the feeling of observer, which she is good at). She is a few generations further away from neo-realism, and she is working in America. I don't blame her.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Very happy to see LOTR sweep, but now I'm annoyed, because I live close to Morton's and there have been helicopters buzzing the after party all night long! At least they could have invited me!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The Outside Scoop, by Spencer Chow.

maypang (maypang), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Item!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

City of God was nominated on a weird loophole that allows foreign-language films that are eligible but not nominated for Foreign Language Film in one year to become eligible for all other categories the following year.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not entirely sure what one calls the color of Charlize Theron's fake tan but it frightens me a little.

Allyzay, Monday, 1 March 2004 07:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Serial Killer Siena

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

See that's true because looking at the photos of her and the ghost of Renee Zellwegger together, all I could think was "When I was a child, those colors were called 'Flesh' and 'Burnt Sienna'." It's like having Malibu Barbie and the skiing Barbie all in one package!

Also I think maybe that Adrien Brody only goes to the Oscars to make out with chixor? Angelina Jolie and Uma Thurman looked pretty but OTOH Uma Thurman could put on a sack and look pretty. Which she proved, apparently.

I have no real comments cos I didn't see the telecast or like any of the movies!!! I'm like Joan Rivers minus the genetical chihuahua crossing that must've happened somewhere in her family.

Allyzay, Monday, 1 March 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I was happy to see LOTR win, if only because those movies are a blast, unlike the dull, instantly forgettably shite that usually walks away with it (Gladiator, Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, A Beautiful Mind, zzzzzzz). I think Jackson's "wise to overlook" comment probably wasn't meant as a dis of those films but probably a poorly phrased jibe at how "disreputable" they are. Hell, I know he loves those movies, you can't get pissed at the chap, he just swept the Oscars.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

All this year's Oscars prove is that if the given is that an epic that most people don't really like very much can expect to win Best Picture and split the tech awards with other movies (Gladiator, Braveheart), clear the fucking way for an epic that people actually like (LotR, at the time Titanic... which, I'm just going to fucking say it, is the last time the movie I liked best in the Picture line-up actually won since I thought L.A. Confidential was beyond overrated as a noir).

Errol Morris was nicer than sweet potato pie compared to Denis Arcand

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and of all the stars that aren't gay that I so desperately want to be gay, Adrien Brody is at the top of the list.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

He is really cute.

Allyzay, Monday, 1 March 2004 07:52 (twenty-two years ago)

If I were gay and picking a celebrity to turn gay it would have to be Sir Ben Kingsley. The man is a god.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it when straight guys pick their hypothetical gay crushes and invariably gravitate towards big-ball icons like Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, etc. It's so cute because it's so not gay at all.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

L.A. Confidential in retrospect WAS a really weak flick. It was only about as good as that silly Mulholland Falls. Actually it might have not been as good. LAC could have been improved by a scene where Treat Williams is tossed from an airplane.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 1 March 2004 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but HAN SOLO, Eric! HAN SOLO! I think Adrien's hot too, tho.

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Monday, 1 March 2004 09:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i missed i, did lotr win?!

gaol clichy (clichy), Monday, 1 March 2004 09:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Milo, did you see Sexy Beast? Kingsley's fucking intense in that one.

Prude (Prude), Monday, 1 March 2004 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't see the show, but I think ROTK kinda deserved the sweep - it was certainly better than the two previous LOTR films. Of course there are other, more worthy films that didn't even get nominated, but hey, these are the Oscars.

If someone had told me in 1994, before Heavenly Creatures came out, that Jackson would direct a film which would win 11 Oscars, I would've peed in my pants in laughter. From Bad Taste/Meet the Feebles/Braindead to this - that's quite a leap. Of course, Heavenly Creatures is his best film, but I think Jackson has had a surprisingly solid career. None of his films are actually bad, even Frighteners was good entertainment.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

It's only a matter of time before Will Ferrell does a musical now.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 1 March 2004 10:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Rob Brydon: I'm not gay!(x45)

pete s, Monday, 1 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

i watched it on BBC up until around 2 - i don't get the hate for Billy Crystal or Sofia Coppola on this thread (Steve Martin was funnier last year tho)

the Michael Moore appearance in the opening sequence seemed quite contrived in a 'look i know i pissed you guys off last year but hey i can take a joke and i'll prove it to you now' - of course everyone laughed when he was crushed by the olyphant thing

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Random day-after thoughts:

*Oh my god Angelina Jolie you're breaking my heart! Stop being so gorgeous!
*Alison Krauss has the bestest voice ever. So good I hardly even noticed Sting was up there.
*Sting and Phil Collins on stage at the same time WHERE ARE THE TERRORISTS WHEN YOU NEED THEM?
*Thank GOD for Jack Black and Will Ferrell. I hope you paid close attention to their song Renee Zellweger.
*I love you Peter Jackson & Fran Walsh.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

nobody in the uk watch this live?

Yes, but I was too stunned by Ronnie Ancona's cleavage to post anything.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The BBC gossip panel were DIRE apart from Ronnie Ancona. Was hoping for some Alan Cumming bitchery.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

'Yes, but I was too stunned by Ronnie Ancona's cleavage to post anything.'

Yes it deserved an Oscar. But dear me she's annoying. At one point when Brydon was complaining abvout her interrupting and pawing him all the time, Alistair MacGowan (who used to go out with her) leaned in and muttered dryly 'get used to it Rob'. Ronni gave him a freezing look. She wasn't so pissed she missed that.

pete s, Monday, 1 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

So good I hardly even noticed Sting was up there.

Even though it looked like he was making love to his hurdy-gurdy?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Errol Morris was nicer than sweet potato pie compared to Denis Arcand
I don't get this...Arcand stayed in the background and joked that his time was up rather than eat up more stage time. Why was that a problem?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what, you glossed over the vaguely sexist dig he made at the woman accepting the award with him?

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I must have! Someone get me a transcript!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What? He said "Time's up." How is that "vaguely sexist"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

See, that's all that I thought he said, "No no, my time's up." Or something to that effect.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

it was the 'as usual' which piqued my chauvinism radar.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not like he said: "Thanks for hogging up all our time, you blabbering cow!" He just merely stated that the time was up and he attempted to politely demure.

I think the "as usual" was more a dig at the proceedings of the ceremony, not in regards to his colleague.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

What was all that goofy shit in Fran Walsh's hair?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Goth lint.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the woman up there with him was his wife, I assume it was just the kind of good natured ribbing that goes on between couples...if it was even aimed at her in the first place, which I don't necessarily buy. But I still don't see how that's any worse than Morris' comments...which were more self-serving than rude, anyhow.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Goth lint.

Glint.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

pete s, Monday, 1 March 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought when Errol Morris said something about the Academy "finally recognizing [his] films" he was being facetious, he hasn't made that many films, has he?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

At least four or five, no?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Thin Blue Line", "Fast Cheap & Out of Control", and....er...that one about the inventor of the electric chair, right?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Also A Brief History of Time

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha if only I had checked IMBD before posting.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He's made TONS of documentaries and I thought what he said was fine, and funny.

suzy (suzy), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

He did one about Stephen Hawking too. (The electric chair one was "Mr. Death".)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I just think he came across as possibly a little less than entirely humble about his work, and that rarely looks good. The films of his I've seen are quite good, however.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(xpost)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Well now I that I know I totally agree with him that it's about time the Academy acknowledged his work.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

What does he call the interview machine thing he devised? I want to say
a) Jumbotron
b) Orgasmatron

but I know these are wrong

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Interrotron!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 1 March 2004 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And Gates of Heaven, which is better than all of his other documentaries.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

morris is fucking right, he deserved oscars for the thin blue line.

the rest of it was perhaps one of the more boring spectacles i had seen, what happened to the montages, the interpretive dances, the tit dresses.

also someone should have let mr jackson know that he was a t a formal awards cermony. (clean shirt, tucked in, tie tied up, combed hair, trimmed beard--did he even have shoes on)

anthony, Monday, 1 March 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe because I think Arcand is just plain a bigger prick in general than Morris... but Hello! You're up there! You've got an Oscar in your hand! Make the fucking speech instead of bitching about the clock on the teleprompter that the audience can't even see anyways! He came off as arrogant and bitchy.

Errol Morris's legendary streak of being snubbed by the doc committee is an industry joke, so I think his comments need to be addressed with that in mind. It was sort of a tongue-in-cheek reference to all those editorial articles in the 1990s that year after year took the documentary selection idiots to task for their incompetence and mentioned Morris's name as the most handy example of outlandish irrelevance on the committee's part.

Man, though, have times changed (or I've changed). The documentary feature category was the only relevant category of the whole evening.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Peter Jackson did manage to wear shoes at the ceremony as Billy Crystal was quick to point out.

I loved how, when they rolled out all the winners from the night at the end, the side of the stage on which the LoTR folx were hanging was all woohoo! party! fun-time chaos! and the folx on the other side of the stage were all oh looky me I have an award and I'm standing perfectly still.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's been three years now and I've been waiting for the very close LotR crew to just have their damned orgy for once and for all. I guess last night is as close as we'll come.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect they're more likely to have a rousing game of Vampire: The Masquerade than an orgy.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 1 March 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so doing Chaki's Coppola/Scientologist drinking game next year.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Peter Jackson's look. He was representing for his peeps (the hackers, slackers and nerds). I mean, he looked exactly like the guy who should've made Lord of the Rings.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

re: Denys Arcand, I was really happy to see him win, but it looked like he was too nervous to make a speech so he made that completely lame "time's up" joke. I didn't see it as a dig at his wife so much as one at himself.

Elliot (Elliot), Monday, 1 March 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't seen this year's oscars, nor do i expect to

i can't quite explain it, but does anyone else have a really strong negative reaction to even the thought of acceptance speechs?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like acceptance speeches better if rejection speeches were as common.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I described Peter Jackson to fellow attendees at an Oscar party as "the smelly IT guy from your company whom you suspect masturbates on all of the computers when no one else is around; YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING ABOUT". I was kind of drunk at the time.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)
