'PopLife' - Life Without Buildings (the first song by them - well, Prince - that I haven't liked. The guitars are luscious though.)
'London Streets' - Nico Fidenco (great blaxploitation soundtrack stuff by a guy I've never heard of - downloaded blindly for a London-themed CD for a friend who's leaving town soon.)
'London, London' - Caetano Veloso (for the same CD - Veloso in enforced exile from Brazil at the end of the 60s, finds a wistful utopia, lonely in London. He's touched by how friendly the police are!)

willem (willem), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been getting ready for a DJ set I'm doing tonight and the songs that I just HAD to play more than once when dance-testing them in my room were A.R.E. Weapons' "Don't Be Scared" and Basement Jaxx's "Right Here's The Spot." Those are two that I am DYING to play. (And man, the irony of my dislike for Kish Kash is that I keep playing the three songs I like over and over and over and over).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I got quoted in the paper saying I'm going to be playing trashy music with lots of bad words too, so A.R.E. are KEY and CRUCIAL.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 4 March 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(And man, the irony of my dislike for Kish Kash is that I keep playing the three songs I like over and over and over and over)

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 7 March 2004 03:37 (twenty-one years ago)

other things i heard yesterday:

borbetomagus first alb from 1980 and then another rec from '82, the first has brian doherty on electronics and it makes for a fairly restrained affair, the same applies for the 2nd half of the '82 set (and they had that quality on later recs like 'zurich' as well but people tend to focus on the power of it and garbage like that).

grupio di improvisazione nuova consonanza LP- ennio morricone is the name that jumps at you (he's on trumptet), on this, a varied set of improvisation from the early 70s.

Uhh really just A Perfect Circle, 24-7, in my head. And maybe Mudvayne. The crazy thoughts that pursue. And possibly some Killswitch Engage. Yes, Postal Service doesn't sound too bad right now. I like quite a bit of DnTel's cd.

But, yeah, APC.

-> Frankie - "Fuck You Right Back"
-> Phantom Planet - "Big Brat" (swank B&W zombie luv in the video)
-> Dizzee Rascal - "Fix Up, Look Sharp" (the Rolling Stone site is a godsend for videos, BTW)

Also, sweet crap, everyone needs to hear Nina Sky's "Move Your Body" and Mr. Vegas' "Pull Up". Yeah, that's right, EVERYFUCKINGONE of you.

actual first paragraph from yesterday's new york times article about jason schwartzman. i really can't believe this isn't from the onion.

AMOEBA MUSIC on Sunset Boulevard had sold out of the latest Sebadoh album, so though it was one of this city's rare dark and stormy nights, and though his black Toyota Prius was parked just up the hill, Jason Schwartzman did the unthinkable: he walked through the rain to the Borders bookstore a few blocks east.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 9 March 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe Jason Schwartzman doesn't already own a copy of _The Sebadoh_.

Today, I am listening to:

W.A.S.P - The Headless Children! (double CD with Inside the Electric Circus for £4.99! Wahoo!!)

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, just because I don't stay awake through an album doesn't mean I don't love it. When I voted for the Kaffe Matthews et al and Acid Mothers records in the 2002 P&J poll, I don't think I had heard them all the way through fully conscious!

As it happened, I put the ISAN record on my MP3 player for my morning jog, and I have to say it was an especially lovely complement to a dramatic morning sky. My interest flagged after a while, though, but the "Jumb Sale (First Date)" (MST3K ref.?) is unbeatable.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 10 March 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Jel, you've got to explain your Ataris statement. The feigned rasp and endless barrage of cliches in that first single ("In This Diary") made it unstomachable, and while I must confess to enjoying the Don Henley cover when it comes on (however bullshit the Black Flag ref is), I'm hard-pressed to believe this is more important than Good Charlotte.

Dudes! The Atari's is the pinnacle of Dawson's Rock, all over the top emotion and fast paced fuzziness. I think it's probably just me who likes it though, it's music for the angst I never had. As much as I like The Good Charlotte, I'd say there are 3 or 4 tracks that sound like filler to me.

Anyway, this morning I'm listening to Blink 182 again, but I'm about to turn it off and go to the supermarket.

yesterday evening:
Chrome - Half Machine Lip Moves/Alien Soundtracks This is amazing stuff! I only knew "Chromosome Damage" (mp3) before I bought this one last week, but the cd is packed with great stuff in that vein. Soundwise (the "space" in the mix, the guitar) it reminds me a lot of Can ca. Tago Mago. Searching the band on ILM it turns out to be a pretty revered (?) bunch around here...

this morning on the way to work:
Encre - Encre and Flux
A french band I saw live last friday, before I'd heard the albums. I find the albums much more overwhelming than their performance, which was too much of a loud/quiet experience in a "Montreal" kindaway, without room for detail, of which there is plenty on the albums.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

''Julio, you've been going in a more dance (?) direction''

hmm...well, not quite, check the dancehall riddims thread, I guess I've been getting quite a few of those and try to learn about it, and enjoying it lots so far.

A guy called gerald is kind of a drum n' base record but its unlike anything I've heard (ok haven't heard lots but the beats on this are great, lots of percussive tics, there is quite a bit to it, the keyboard sound far more integrated with the breakbeats and the samples are funny): actually talked to an ILXer last night abt it and the reason it sounds the way it does is that he apparently splices tape instead of using a computer (basically concrete type stuff).

I use slsk for mainly out of print/hard to get/expensive stuff (apart from dancehall as I haven't tried shopping in reggae shops yet), whatever the 'genre' and the first version of this alb is unavailable, this from an ILM thread.

anyway:

sonic youth- walls have ears (this is a boot off a tour from the 80s).

Michael, why have you been listening to all this music that you don't really like? Are you reviewing it for some publication?

I'm listening to Kid Koala.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Saturday, 20 March 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

No, just satisfying my base curiosity.

I think may be sounding more negative than I really am: the Necks' album is now my new favorite falling-asleep music and the Big Tymers and DJ Koze CDs I think are really satisfying. The Daedelus one was interesting to me because sound-wise it sounded like a jumble, though now it doesn't -- it's kinda like IDM Avalanches, and that's not really bad at all.

on the way to work i listened to return of the durutti column, but i was too sleepy (and hungry, even though i ate my usual breakfast) to enjoy it properly. so i started saying the stuff i wanted to eat aloud in addition to my usual litany, "i'm wide awake, i'm wide awake." but now in this office chair, taking a break from reading about the history of the eeoc, it's okay. it will be sad if libraries go away.

youn, Saturday, 20 March 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been listening to a barrel of bootlegs, as I'm making a CD up for my bootleg virgin friend. Track listing so far, coming to 79:35 -

1. Smells like Booty
2. A Stroke of Genius
3. Don't Call me Blur
4. Paperback Believer
5. Crazy Fool
6. Dirty Stones
7. I Fell You Really Caught Me On Edge
8. Marshall's Been Snookered
9. Forgot About Sugarbabes
10. I Wish I Was a Bulldog
11. Fill Me Eyes of the Tiger
12. Get Your Faith On
13. Staying Alive as a Slave
14. Right Said Kraftwerk
15. Jacko Under Pressure
16. Sexual High
17. Badbusters
18. Beetleg Bootles
19. Ray of Gob

I've deliberatly left off who the sources are, as I reckon she can work it out for herself.

However, I have taken a break from that to play ILX, and I'm listening to the Scissor Sisters album - currently on a god-awful cover of Comfortably Numb that sounds like the Bee Gees. Shame, since the previous couple of tracks were ace. Oh well.

''Sextant is really phenomenal, isn't it, Julio?''

yeah, the electronics seem to be so integrated to the improvising, the textures are quite something.

last night:

sun city girls 'midnight cowboys from ipanema': hilarious stuff from '86, a mix of pop covers ('midnight from the oasis' has some of the best drunken vocals) and sped-up tape, with helium-ed vocal hilarity.

scorces 'vivre avec la bete' LP: folk + drones bliss.

ligeti 'aventures' LP for 3 singers and 7 instrumentals: I'm sold on the absurd opera idea.

braxton/muhal richard abrahams duo 1976 LP on arista: great mix of standards and braxton's own compositions.

tony oxley/wolfgang fuchs/hugh metcalfe and phil wachsmann- grinder and grinder LP on bead: doesn't really do much for me (apart from te last track), the improvising is ok but doesn't work as a record so far (but maybe I was concentrating a bit too much on cameron diaz's arse as I was watching charlie's angels with the sound turned down).

Wilco - A Ghost is Born "Spiders (Kidsmoke)"-Wilco goes Neu! (even tracklength-wise; nearly 11 mins) and throws in some rootsy guitarstomp ánd Television guitars. Not sure about the result, but it's one of the more quaint/interesting tracks on the album.

went to a gig last night and saw moshi honen (electric guitar+ effects/pedal) and alan wilkinson (baritone/tenor sax) and this had everything: repetition, noize-ness, soft-ness, lots of fast/slow/medium paced playing, lots of little ticks and full on grunts, they really knew each other inside out and the 20-30 ppl there all loked and smiled when they found a nice melody half way through (but all improvised).

I don't think I've ever listened to the whole of this awake before, a pity because I've just discovered the fifth track is Wolfgang Voigt's grandest apparition: Gas, Köenigsforst

Bailey/Metheny/Bendian/Wertico - The Sign of 4
Led Zeppelin – “Black Dog”
Fiuczynski’s Headless Torsos – Amandala
Yes – “Roundabout” (This song has always been so weird for me – parts of it I totally love, parts of it bug the hell out of me. This doesn’t add up to it being OK or mediocre or a brief casual interest – It adds up to it being simultaneously awesome and horrible in a way that fascinates me.)

Walkmen - _Bows and Arrows_. Yeah, I can see where their sleepy drunken drawl can grate (I'm totally fine w/ it, BTW), but "The Rat"!

Sundar, I only listened to _Collidescope_ once, so I can't comment too confidently. Like I allude to, I'm partial to the less RAWK (or less obvious) bits of their ouevre, like their Talking Heads cover ("Memories Can't Wait") on _Vivid_, or "Love Rears Its Ugly Head" & "Under Cover of Darkness" (on _Time's Up_, my fave of theirs), or the ambient spoken-word bass-synth thing on _Stain_ ("Rope"). When they remember they're supposed to RAWK, they lose the plot a bit, unless they can stumble upon a great hook / chorus & get out of their own way (cf. "Glamour Boys" / "Type" / most of _Stain_, where they make like a hyperaware Soundgarden/Bad Brains amalgam) (note: I have NEVER heard Bad Brains - boo on me - so this analogy could be frozen winter shit).

And while Reid's virtuosity on the geetar & his seemingly boundless creativity can be fun stuff, his lyrics can be so damn didactic and stiff as to undercut his technical acumen. As if didacticism and stiffness are the things you should take from Midnight Oil & U2. His solo album (the name escapes me) veers between both those poles at alarming rates - I think there was actually a track featuring Laurence Fishburne narration! It's a great listen if you're curious as to what a Vernon Reid core-dump would sound like, but not the most consistently enjoyable thing in the world, especially if you are looking for the next "Glamour Boys".

Anyway, back on point - this record sounds like they're trying to harken back to _Vivid_, but can't seem to reclaim any of the pep & vigor that made _Vivid_ vivid. Also, they really didn't need to cover "Back in Black" AND "Tomorrow Never Knows", though Corey Glover sounds better as Lennon than as Brian Johnson.

cherished amazing record

I recently sprang for a copy of the vinyl-only Berlin 1980 performance, it's a binaural recording where the engineer is walking around in the space, standing inside & outside the installations, walking through the rooms. hallways act as high-pass band filters. It's definitely worth twenty dollars: http://www.lovely.com/titles/lprainforest.html

Fläsket Brinner, The Swedish Radio Recordings 1970-1975

Starting with the last CD in the box, the 4th, I've already heard a Ho Chi Minh poem, recited in Swedish and followed by a dozen minutes of mellow east-prog workout, and a half-decent rock version of Morricone's "La Resa Del Conti", amongst other stuff.
On CD2, however, there's awaiting also a - relatively short (7:13) - "Lord of the Rings Medley".

stuff I've been listening to yesterday:

space dust 'no kissing in public', an ilxer is drumming on this and its really great. I taped this for another ilxer and filled the remaining tape with some dead C tracks from their 'world hope peace et al' comp on shock.

then slsk d/l:

'thunda clap' riddim alb vybz katel, tanya stephens and assassin are the highlights.

ennio morricone 'the good, the bad and the ugly' (CD2).

kan mikami 'bang!' from 1974 is really good folk rec, from straight-ish folk to a variety of arrangements, include 'free' sax playing to concrete tape to lush piano, and everything hangs together really well.

Pisscutter - Fibonazi Sequants

I prefer their earlier stuff. Albini's really f***ed their sound as usual, with all that trebly compression. Dude has no hearing left. Check out their EP from '97, 'They Were As They Were Not and Shall Never Again Be'.

well i know it's cheesy to make comments on one own's recordings and all, but the band is rather unhappy with that ep. the drums are tinny, my guitar sounds like a bee, and Sean had strep throat during the sessions. the only good that came out of that ep was during the song "These Batteries May Already Be This Fucked", was Sean legitimately vomiting all over the mic... (Sean is better now thankfully). It was a sonically turgent but irreplaceable recording moment, for us anyway.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember those early gigs in Portugal. It was like a blender in the front rows. All of us got our glasses crushed. And afterwards we talked a bit about Futurism, and I mentioned my magazine that I had back in Czechoslovakia, Futur.Fall, remember, and you were very gracious to agree to an interview. I thank you.

Grace Jones - Use Me

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Not a problem. (xpost to mole) I may have been paranoid at the time, because I had accidentally fractured a man's front teeth and gashed a woman's neck with my guitar at the aforementioned show in Lisbon... (thing about playing Maytag osmium guitars is that that metal hurts when hurled at fast speeds.. I wasn't thinking, and I still feel horrible about that)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah well, you know, we are intense in Eastern Europe and we like intensity and a kind of madness on stage that you show us... er... I forget my aiming point... oh, yes, I feel that although you live and record in America, you show this kind of affinity to European audiences, and maybe that is why you find your primary audience here. Like us, you are very serious and intense about your music, and you also never make any jokes about anything. This is interesting to us.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

well, we're hoping the swedes express this same intensity. we're touring there (and only there) next month.

cool, keep me in touch. I'll send you our tour only 7" (rerecording of "These Batteries May Already Be This Fucked" with unreleased B-side "Common Conondrummers/Partial Parcel and Paste")

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel like apologizing, I didn't know there was an actual 7" single for that, I thought there were only the mp3's. you learn something new, constantly.

TrOUGHMAN (gaz), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, yes. The cover was something our bullshit record company forced on us. Needless to say we were totally unimpressed.

just scored these couple of CDs second hand today:

ennio morricone 'gil occhi freddi della paura' this is phenomenal and I'll post abt it on the morricone thread.

max brand 'in memoriam': an electronic music comp (most of the pieces are from the 60s) from this fairly obscure guy (not really academic concrete), some of it is kind of 'whoa!!! these synthesizers do amazing things huh guys!' and he sounds a bit in awe to do anything with it bar some minor play, but the 'fragments' section is quite something and the whole things ends up sounding very contemporary.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a job interview in an hour and have spent the entire morning listening to the Beastie Boys. It helps when I'm nervous.

"So Anthony, describe your communication skills..."

"Sometimes I like to brag, sometimes I'm softspoken and when I'm in Holland I EAT the pannakoeken!"

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That Ben Perowsky cd was cool but a bit insubstantial (sort of hip trip-hoppy background music that reminds me of a similar regular gig I used to do).

Since then I've been listening to the last couple Spoon cds and Led Zeppelin's 'How the West Was Won' to prep for some playing with a rock band.

Anthony, it's pannekoeken but I think they'd be so flabbergasted they'd either give you the job right away or say "we'll call you back". You'll definately get the job if it were in Holland tho... :)

Sublime frequencies 'i remember syria' (CD1)
gunter muller/andres bosshard/jacques widmer 'nachtluft', this is one of those unheard music series reissues on the atavistic label and this easily one of the top three releases from it so far, great tape/percussion/electronic crazee-ness from '86 (good liner notes from jim o'rouke too).
ennio morricone 'i cannibali' from 1969 (check recently revived morricone thread, lots of recommendations from ilx ppl on the last day or so).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 9 April 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm loving that 'I Remember Syria' disc. it's actually by Porest aka Mark Gergis, but that was downplayed a bit to fit into the series' wider scheme...

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Elephantism (collage based on field recordings of african folk music -- not bad but not thrilling)
Matmos - Rat Relocation Program (thumbs up, but I'd be happy if this entire Locust series were priced as EP's, they don't feel like albums)
Liverpool Sound Collage
Toshiya Tsunoda - extract from field recording archive #3
Dominique Leone's second album deserves much better than mp3-release status
Electronic Kabuki Mambo
Grace Jones - Slave to the Rhythm
Annette Peacock - I'm the One (title track a-ok)

The other version of Kontake has electronics with piano and percussion parts that he amended later on.

The Complete Minor Threat
RFTC - Live From Camp X-Ray
lots of Beastie tracks from their anthology

on the radio I heard "So Into You" which is evidently by Fabolous (had no idea I liked anything he did at all!) I was disappointed to discover that he doesn't actually say "we can sleep on the yacht while they paint the villa" like I thought he did.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 April 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh wait, I did know that Kontakte has percussion and piano. So that means I didn't know there is an electronics-only version. I haven't heard that at all! Crazy, 'cause I love the one with percussion/piano. So the electronics-only came first? How different is it?

System Of a Down – Toxicity
Jah Wobble/Evan Parker – Passage to Hades
Weather Report – Mr Gone
Luke Vibert – YosepH (Fuck me, I sometimes forget the greatness of this.)
Supersilent – 6 (Twice. This sounds a whole lot better with Dolby NR on it.)
Sonic Youth – Murray Street (You know, this is actually pretty great indie jangle-pop meets drone. I'm increasingly starting to suspect that their later stuff is in fact more, or at least no less, interesting than the older stuff. I really need to get Thousand Leaves and NYC G&F again.)
Bang On a Can – Industry (I'm enjoying "Hoketus" more than I did before.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

''Oh wait, I did know that Kontakte has percussion and piano. So that means I didn't know there is an electronics-only version. I haven't heard that at all! Crazy, 'cause I love the one with percussion/piano. So the electronics-only came first? How different is it?''

Stockhausen's notes at the back of the LP don't say which came first but i think the electronic track was made first and shortly afterwards he added percussion and piano to the electronics, and this version was first performed in 1960.

I haven't heard this version in a quite a while. I'll give it a listen and report.

today

I like Creatures *much* better than WWTBB. The former may be morbid, but it's magical, they seem committed to the material; WWTBB is just pedestrian, and the tracks that stretch more don't seem compelling to me; they don't really work.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 April 2004 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

what are the Delays like? I'm fairly sure I won't be into them but I had a stupid argument with someone about them recently. "It's DELAYS, they don't want a 'the'", "oh, fools"

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 18 April 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, I've reviewed it today and given it a 6, which means 'good' on the Stylus scale. They're OK, about 30% of their songs are pretty decent, but it's produced by Graham Sutton from Bark Psychosis and thus sounds AMAZING. I could sit and listen to the production all day. I'd recommend downloading "Wanderlust", "On", "Nearer Than Heaven" and "Long Time Coming". "Wanderlust" in particular has these synth steel drums running through it which are amazing.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Sunday, 18 April 2004 13:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Talking Heads' "Mind," "Once In A Lifetime," "Houses In Motion"

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 18 April 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Capitol K & Jega: split 7"

the capitol k track has some exquisitely grating hi-end drones and does debilitating things with a rimshot. Pretty straightforward breaks but eq'd to sound like bongos when they kick in. which was pleasant. scrapier and more attenuated than i remember them to be.

the jega number is suitably odd, a tad disappointing. the point; brash nu-electro synth making an effortful morph into some rinky-dink jazz piano stabbery. comes across as a tongue-in-cheek conceptual work-out.

non-u, Sunday, 18 April 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The club that's about a block away from my flat, because I have the window open. They're playing a weird-ass mix of mid 90s four to the floor techno, and cheese. So it's "dukka-dukka-dukka-dukka-dukka" followed by "Achy Breaky Heart".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

A mix including Quincy Jones, Gil Scott-Heron, George Benson, Phil Upchurch, Idris Muhammad, Roger Glenn, Johnny Hammond, Doug Carn, Marvin Gaye, Ramsey Lewis. Presently listening to Back and Forth by Cameo and will probably listen to it at least two more times before getting dinner.

Just downloaded the new Streets, despite being banned by someone for no apparent reason. This person didn't have the last track anyhow. So I got all the tracks off someone else (in about ten minutes) and messaged the person who banned me: "I have the last track from the new Streets if you are interested." No response yet.

Isn't that an early Bowie song?

Buzz the Fuzz (Andy K), Monday, 19 April 2004 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It's an early Biff Rose song that Bowie covered (on Hunky Dory).

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 19 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Bowie covered it way before Hunky Dory, when he was in one of his early bands. (the Hype? i'm not sure). The Biff Rose song on Hunky Dory is "Fill Your Heart".

DJ Envy: The Big Game 4 (March Madness) (Good, but that godawful Ja Rule track most emphatically does not belong here...and is that JOE BUDDEN RHYMING OVER "FIX UP LOOK SHARP"!?!? Did I miss something?)

Kid Creme-Everybody (Wackside Remix) (pop house, reserving judgement until I hear the original)

Phil Collins-Easy Lover (on a peculiar tip I downloaded this at the weekend, I think Alan Braxe needs to remix)

"New Dawn Fades"
hmmm.

listened to Sonic Nurse on the train this morning (sun had just come up, fog hung over the fields), very patchy. "Unmade Bed" is very nice, even though they should've taken it further.

The iPod came up with a sublime sequence this morning on the train in to work, including 'There is no easy way down' by Dusty, 'I only said' by MBV, 'I fought in a war' - B&S, 'By the time I get to Venus' - Juan Maclean, Lullaby 6000 - The Czars, 'A certain someone' - Sundays, 'Seagull' - Ride and 'One Hand Loose' - Charlie Feathers.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 23 April 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't have thought the Juan Maclean was your thing Jerry? I love that record, I must say.

Biosphere, Patashnik, which I think Siegbran and I are agreed on as one of the best/creepiest albums of its early nineties ambient R&S-label kind.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

alison krauss, helloween, vacaciones, club 8

jel -- (jel), Friday, 23 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I am listening to a tape from the 1980s.

It is made up of sessions and tracks taped from the Peel and Janice Long shows. Every 3 minutes Peel and Long turn up and say something before getting cut off.

It's pretty exciting.

Current band = BlowUp? With a song called... 'The Heights', or 'Scarlet Dreams'?

I have never played the tape before.

the beebfox, Friday, 23 April 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Bellefox, that song is fabulous!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

This tape gets better and better. Janice L seems excited by the music. And VotB - explosive, as Donna says - is followed by 'She Looks Right Through Me'. Not sure whom this is by, I mean, by whom this is.

Janet Jackson, Damita Jo (I'm still trying to figure out why I think her sex kitten persona is interesting and not gross.)

The Hold Steady, The Hold Steady Almost Killed Me (A less cynical age would've pegged Craig Finn as a new Dylan; I think he sounds like a straight Greg Proops. But he's a good, damned good. His vignettes of the alt-rock lifestyle are so nauseatingly vivid, full of the held-back bile of self-loathing.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 23 April 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Ta, K.

You're not gonna believe what 80s Janice is playing now:

In defense of 'Rock of Ages' by the Band - the Toussaint horn section arrangements make quite a contrast w/ the studio versions, and the 'Unfaithful Servant' contains one of Robbie's simplest/nicest ever gtr solos - cld do w/out Garth's extended organ fantasia, tho'

mainliner 'imaginative plain' scored this cheap at tower yesterday, post ZZ-top murkily produced, top range mess!

yasunao tone- 'music and geography' is a live performance rom '83 with john cage and kosugi on vocals, tudor on piano, someone on zither and tone himself on tape, sometimes boring (well cage is on here, whaddya expect!) but some ok tape manipulation. Then a couple of tracks on a separate LP of full on electronic damaged frequencies and so on (all from slsk).
