...seems that show is completely forgotten about. It was great!

I was wondering the same thing. I loved this show more than The Simpsons.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

a landlord I had in Chicago was basically Dr. Katz. As awesome as that sounds, it wasn't.

hstencil, Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha - god i loved this show, and felt sooooo stupid for having a crush on a cartoon character.

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Basically, since Cartoon Network is pimping Home Movies into the ground, there isn't a niche for Dr. Katz... WHICH IS TOO DAMN BAD SEZ I.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Ben is pretty much the archetype for every male ilXor.

Just Saying, Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, Dr Katz shits all over Home Movies; I can't even believe it's the same creative team. (This is the point in the thread where someone tells me it isn't and I realize that I've been denigrating Home Movies from a faulty premise.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:53 (twenty-one years ago)

home movies is fantastic too

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

you are, but you're not necessarily wrong

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I may be the only one, but I like Home Movies. I don't think I ever saw an episode of Dr. Katz though.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I like Coach McGurk, but everyone else can go jump into a pit.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I loved the relationship Ben and his dad had - the way he was hopeless, but they were so close and just laughed about everything.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh man did I also have a crush on the receptionist, but now I can't even remember her name. Oh wait...LAURA!!

I think I had more a crush on Laura's voice.

No DVD release for this?

What's Home Movies? I'm outta the loop. I only watch Monster Garage these days.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 4 March 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My nickname for a disconcertingly long amount of time was Laura, take as you will. That show was amazing and was the basis for my entire theory of nicknaming people "Something McSomethingface".

"What you refer to as my drinking problem, I refer to as my drinking hobby."

Allyzay, Thursday, 4 March 2004 04:33 (twenty-one years ago)

a friend of mine has a bunch of episodes taped from when it was rerun on comedy central (i think) some time ago. the joy that show gives me has not diminished a whit over the years.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 4 March 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It was Laura's expression that made me swoon. Especially when she was talking to Ben.

I found a single episode of this last night on On Demand cable. A treat. Ray Romano and Jeanine Garofalo were both surprisingly funny, considering that I've come to think of neither of them as particularly funny people. Jeanine was especially dry.

"Garafalo."
"How do you spell that?"
"Like the animal."

haha ok: my best friend in hs and i had caught only 3-4 episodes of dr. katz; for some reason noone else had seen it at all, and we just coulnd't explain it.

one night, cos we were both losers, we rented "exotica" (atom egoyan, 1994) thinking it was like a zalman king red shoe diaries softcore kind of a thing. after abt 20 mins i was like "jesus christ this is like dr. katz." then it was the FUNNIEST MOVIE EVER.

g e o f f (gcannon), Monday, 9 May 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Kenan, you mean "Drinky the Drunk Guy!" Watched it too: I continually check the on-demand channel for the occasional Dr. Katz thrown in there. That's one of my favorites, actually -- "drinky the drunk guy who drinks too much and his name is my dad" -- in part because it really kinda toes the line on whether Ben's being completely ridiculous or whether Katz really does kind of drink a lot.

Really want to re-watch the one where Ben's mom comes over for Thanksgiving...

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 9 May 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Though I was vaguely weirded-out to realize that I'm now older than Ben! It changes everything. He used to seem much more pathetic; now I keep thinking he's only 24, he'll do fine.

Upon catching an episode of Home Movies last night I found myself overcome with a crippling desire to watch this show and wondering where the hell it's gone to. According to some guy on Amazon, DVDs will be released sometime this year. As I sit here at work with nothing to do i can't seem to stop thinking about wanting to watch an episode. Or, if nothing else, just laugh as i listen to H. John Benjamin talk.

Any news on if this is actually getting released or what?

if you have comedy central on demand then you can view episodes. i just watched one with jim gaffigan and gilbert godfreyd

hmm. i do have on demand but i've never seen it on there before. typically the only thing of note are jon stewart's interviews from the daily show.

i imagine a big problem with getting this on DVD is the fact that every single comic who was ever on might need to be compensated in some way as a result of their participation. lord knows i'd be a little hesitant to hand emo phillips a check after all these years.

They should revive this show, and instead of stand-ups, they could have Entertainment News Soundbites as patients. Eg: I funnily enough said, "Have you met someone?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Is it Tori Spelling?" He said, ?Yes." I said, "Have you slept with her?" He said, "Yes, we?re soulmates. She loves me unconditionally.?

Okay, maybe that would be more like some Jay Leno sketch.

There's something about his humor, especially when it's really openly corny or punning, that really gets me -- I suppose because it's not aggressively humorous, more like the humor of the little guy in the corner who only pipes in now and then.

On December first, 1946, I came into this world, the son of Sidney and Julia Katz. My parents, while poor, were both Podcasters. Now I am a grown-up, with two beautiful kids, couple of

I love the near-groaner uncle jokes! Most people do them in an aggressive way these days -- like "aww yeah that's a real groaner, how ya like that" -- whereas Katz does them in true uncle style, which involves a lot more implies shrugging.

SF Sketchfest Review: Friday Night's Dr. Jonathan Katz Professional Therapist and Patients

232091a_tn220x220.jpgSF Sketchfest presented two sold-out nights of "An Evening of Dr. Jonathan Katz Professional Therapist and Patients" this weekend at Eureka Theatre. We went on Friday night, when the “patients” were Maria Bamford, Brian Posehn, Bob Odenkirk, and “more,” which ended up being surprise guest, Robin Williams. The patients were delightfully quirky, and, as usual, Dr. Katz was the perfect springboard for their jokes. Those of you who went to Saturday night's show, let us know how it was and who the surprise guest was for the night!

Our spouse was a huge fan of the ‘90s, animated version of Dr. Katz (we enjoyed it, but didn’t go out of our way to watch it), so he can offer a better perspective of the live format versus the animated:

Daniel: Fans were not disappointed. All the familiar elements were there minus the squiggle vision. Talk of Katz's son Ben opened the show. Ben was apparently so confident as a child he "truly believed that only he could prevent forest fires." (Ben was played by Jon Benjamin, who was part of Saturday night's performance -- see comments). There was also mention of Katz's secretary Laura and the obligatory piano exit music at the end of each session.

Hear about each "patient's" "quirks" after the jump!

Daniel: Each comedian brought something funny and slightly revealing to the table. This format seemed especially well suited to Maria Bamford who's act normally revolves around her OCD and her efforts to take control of a life which seems slightly off kilter.

SFist Leanne: Maria Bamford's imitation of Shirley, her African-American insurance specialist, was tops: “I’m too blessed to be stressed.”

D: Brian Posehn delivered a hilarious set centered on marriage, masturbation [“Things are about to get awesome in here,” was his best line. -- SFist Leanne] and the stupidity of the general public.

D: Bob Odenkirk read a brilliant poem about the regrets of not eating enough high fat ice cream in one's life time.

L: Bob Odenkirk had a great idea for a new American Talent Show, called, "America, Come On!"

D: Even surprise guest Robin Williams seemed to settle down long enough to deliver a decent set of material. Although he did stray dangerously close to appearing bitter and washed up.

L: Last time we saw Robin Williams was during an art show at White Walls gallery, when he ducked into the Gangway for a pee.

D: But the real star was Dr. Katz himself who handled each comedian with his own unique wit and deadpan comic observation. Each set was like watching a well played tennis match with Katz himself as the John McEnroe of comic therapy.

L: We really enjoyed the format of Friday night's show. Jonathan Katz mentioned at the end that he has multiple schlerosis. It's apparent his dry wit is as sharp as ever, and we wish him all the best.

chaki, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

maria bamford is b r i l l i a n t

gff, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

I can't figure out why, but Ian's reaction is not uncommon: it seems like people 25 or younger are just, like ... "this is boring and dated and must be a 90s thing."

They must be right about it being "dated," just empirically, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how or why! I assume it must have to do with the stand-up component, because the father-son interaction seem impossible to date.

nabisco, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

The father/son stuff is fine, it's the "washed up celebrities making somewhat unfunny jokes in the setting of a shrink's office" thing that's off putting, and yes, the generally "dated" references.

ian, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

xpost !! amazing !!

I guess also the kinda halting unscripted "recorded in the pantry" tone of it gets used these days by any number of cheap animated shows, only they're all consciously weird and wacky and built for short attention spans -- Katz does that sort of thing but in a completely mundane sphere, and expects you to sit there and just listen to characters talk about nothing in particular for long stretches of time.

I like when Stanley keeps saying "frucktose" and Katz is all "do you say 'go fruke yourself?'"

nabisco, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Wait no, that was not an xpost, you were responding to me and life is not as magical as I thought

nabisco, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

Haha plus Ian, which way do you mean that "washed up?" Lots of these people were kinda PRE-fame when doing this.

nabisco, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

to be honest, i don't remember which celebrities were on the episodes i watched!

ian, Monday, 28 January 2008 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

I'm trying to the think of the main ones who got way more famous post-Katz. Ray Romano was on this a lot, right before Everybody Love Raymond started. Dave Chapelle did one. Winona Ryder and Janeane Garofolo and Lisa Kudrow were all probably at 90s high points. Al Franken was on, at some moment between doing SNL stuff and slipping over into politics.

David Mamet is all over these, actually -- I think he's only a guest once, but he's credited for writing random stuff like Katz's songs.

nabisco, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and Joy Behar was on all the time, before going on to The View; Sarah Silverman; Jeff Garlin, before Curb Your Enthusiasm; Jon Stewart, back in the days when it seemed unthinkable that anyone besides Craig Kilborn could possibly host The Daily Show; Tom Kenney, before he was Spongebob...

But of course if your show just has bunches of comedians, it stands to reason that some will go on and be big, and others won't; plenty of guests either went nowhere or were already on the last legs of 80s popularity (BUT I LOVE KEVIN MEANY ANYWAY)

nabisco, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

nothing is more classic then Jim Gaffigan going on about the Sea Cow.
