I just need to shout from the rooftops about how glad I am that H&M started doing blokes' clothes. Hurrah!

What, in like 1987?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it's so good! AND IT HAS COME TO CANADA yay

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

H & M in Berlin the other weekend, Pam took 8 items of clothing into the changing rooms then bought 7 of them!!!

This is a world record.

h&m is the Gap.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

but better

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

To be fair to Barry, I think they did stop doing them for a while. It used to be *my shop* when I was 15 or so and then one day I went back and the men's department had disappeared.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't really know about them until the early 90s, and they certainly didn't do men's clothes for years after that. But they are so cheap, seem to be genuinely decent quality, and they just look good (or at least better than most) on my frame. £49.95 I spent yesterday and I now have 5 new items of clothing! All of which fit me well and are ace!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't know about them until 2000 when one opened at the Trafford Centre. I wasn't convinced until last year though. They rock hard.

Dave B (daveb), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Gap = Death

H&M = saviour for people with no real idea.

39 Steps + 40 Winks (39 Steps + 40 Winks), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i was thoroughly non-plussed at the mens' offer (i know, it's the end of the season, but gimme a little preview!) at the herald square and soho locations. it has become very old navy-ish since my last visit.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, 39 steps is harsh but slightly fair. However, my days of eccentric fashion are mostly past, and I've never earned enough for haute couture, so somewhere that fits well, is high quality and cheap is a godsend. And I do ocasionally spoil myself with something unusual or rare, usually shoes, just to remind myself I do have a bit of style and originality.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah h and m wipes the floor with all the rest save uniqlo, becuase its so cheap, especially here in spain. i went into benetton today to give it a chance, but it was tragic. a pitiful selection of shittily cut, and designed clothes, at 3 times the price of hennes shit. h & m realsie that plain clothes in lots of colours is u &k, rather than a load of old shit. that said, maybe my opinion only counts for h & m in spain which is 100000 times better than in england. for the uk, replace 'h & m' with 'uniqlo', i guess. or just fly here.

as far as i know h _& m have done mens stuff since at least 1999, when i first discovered it. there is a sotre on oxford st that only has owmens tho, nr the big hmv.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate the t-shirts because they seem to fall apart after you wash them three times. the pantsah and skirts have weird cuts. so uh no i don't like H&M. even though benetton is boring (compared to H&M) it offers good quality.

I was going to post this yesterday but forgot. With Lush across the street, there is now no reason to go to London. Also, Powell St. immediately becomes Broke Ave.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 June 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I love H&M because they make cheap decent basic clothing. I hate H&M since some of the clothes have crappy quality. It seems to be a lottery when buying clothes there, getting good quality clothing sometimes and crappy sometimes. In Sweden everyone has H&M clothes, there are stores in every little town. Some days I have nothing other than H&M clothes on me.

TBA (TBA), Thursday, 24 June 2004 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
It's gone a bit crap. Still worth a visit though.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I got a great cardigan at the new york one last week. and some sweaters. but it seems like the trousers were all way too small for the sizes they were marked. or maybe I've become fat.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

No no that is exactly my problem with it! The trouser thing. And the fact that there were a lot of bad faux-Urban Outfitters type t-shirts there all of a sudden.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Muji though.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

yes the trousers didn't fit at all. and I bought two sweaters, one a large and one a medium, and if you lay them out, they are exactly the same size. one was made somewhere else though. the shirts were all very tight. I know that slim is in, but when I can't fit into a 15 1/2 shirt, there is something screwy with the sizing.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought a black suit (separates) for about 45 pounds. But it was way too busy to try the trousers on so I took them home and they were the wrong size. Why is there nowhere here I can get a decent-ish black suit for that price?

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

if it's the same black suit I saw at h&m in ny, I thought it looked like a $90 suit, if that's any consolation.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

It doesn't matter.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

h&m sizing drives me nuts. the last time i was there, i bought 2 skirts: a size 8 and a size 12. they're not radically different cuts/styles. who knows?

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 22:23 (twenty-one years ago)

And the fact that there were a lot of bad faux-Urban Outfitters type t-shirts there all of a sudden.

This is exactly the problem, yes.

adam. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it didn't.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

yes that's correct. I bought a beige v-neck jumper today. getting old.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Lauren about the sizes, but sometimes that can work in favour of your ego!!
I love H & M on the whole, but when you go to one of their stores that are just crammed with stuff where you cannot browse properly.

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Uniqlo lasted mere months in Manchester city centre, which was a great disappointment. My initial liking for H&M has waned a bit lately, too crammed and just generally not as good. Muji is still dependable, despite MY FAVOURITE TROUSERS EVER apparently being discontinued.

Tag (Tag), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't been to Uniqlo for aaaages, but my best red vest is falling apart so maybe I should go.

H&M sizes are the screwiest things ever, but generally they're teenytiny with the occasional mahoosive item. I still love the shop though. However, New Look is rocking my world currently - they're starting a bloke's range as well (maybe only in flagship stores at first)! Although I don't know if the pink colour scheme in lots of NL shops will scare the gentlemen.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The range of clothes for hefty chicks in h&m is pretty dire at the moment, the only items that took my fancy were a pair of plum coloured cords for £20. I must have a nose round new look.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

H&M tops in a size M are usually a perfect fit for me, but when I try on trousers it's a job to find an XL pair that I can pull up over my thighs. XL = size 18-20 with twigs for legs.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Muji is still dependable, despite MY FAVOURITE TROUSERS EVER apparently being discontinued.

I heard they'd just been renamed.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish more shops would name products like IKEA do: a nice bra called BÖÖB or something. Muji could do amusing faux-Japanese ones.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why. I think "Tag's favourite trousers ever" was a pretty nifty product name.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Zara is evil towards women by making everything to fit small Spanish women therefore making me feel like a big fat hippo* when I can't get into something two sizes up from what I normally get out of other shops. H&M, on the other hand, is one of about three shops I will willingly go into on the rare occasion when I have to venture into a shop for the purpose of buying clothes and be reasonably confident I will find something I like that I can afford. And I can fit into.

(*for benefit of people who haven't met me, I am not a big fat hippo)

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Zara rarely stock the small sizes of their men's ranges cause apparently British men like wearing their clothes baggy / are really fat, unlike their tailored, svelte Spanish counterparts. And me.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps you could wear small floaty dresses and I could wear baggy fatman suits?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

(Hello!)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Zara is... arrgh. Whenever I find some fantastic piece that I really really want, they are always out of my size without fail. I tried on a bunch of trousers there yesterday and most almost fit but were slightly too tight in the hips, a size up would be too big though. I don't know how people fit in them - I have one pair from there that require my highest heels to not have the hem dragging on the ground, and I'm 5'9"!

Of course, I saw this woman in the shop - she looked French, but I don't know - who was nearly as tall as me but was absolutely tiny, like a US size 0 tiny. I guess she had no trouble.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 1 December 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Zara is evil towards women by making everything to fit small Spanish women therefore making me feel like a big fat hippo* when I can't get into something two sizes up from what I normally get out of other shops. And I can fit into.

I always figured the H&M sizes did not correspond with the right ones cause I can fit in a Medium and even Small quite easily.

That said, I think H&M clothes are completely crap. I rarely if ever buy there. On top of that Stella M has her excluse line there, making it even more evil.

i didn't find their men's clothing at the SF store nearly as dire as adam did, although some of it was a bit too flashy/nighttime for me. I didn't buy anything, if that's any indicator. also I am of normal height.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Well, I bought some jeans, the ends of which I am going to have to turn up (like a tosser) until I can have them taken in.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

why don't you just go to the gap like everyone else? individuality is dead.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

shorty pants are in for women this season, I bet a pair of women's coulottes would fit you like normal trousers.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

Yes, but I don't have women's hips.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Just you wait. I'll have a retort for you.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes it would: Are there no short legged men left?

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

i can only assume that indentured child labour is not what it was

You'd think children of all people would understand.

[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

bell_labs, Thursday, 3 April 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

OK look Shasta I was being flippant but if you'll allow me to get serious for a second I think you've got the situation completely reversed. yes we are all living in a system of exploitation that it impossible to completely evade. but in some things there is more of a CHOICE than others. basically all electronics equipment for the entire universe is manufactured in Taiwan, even Alpha Centauri has contracts there. but with clothes you have a choice. buying clothes at H&M is like buying a whole chicken for $3. it doesn't seem right -- because it's not.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 4 April 2008 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think it's a case of the-cheaper-the-clothes-the-worse-treated-the-workforce, though. I'm sure plenty of more expensive stores use sweatshop labour.

H&M sucks for men. So so boring.

Uniqlo jeans for men are good but the rest of their stuff is pretty crap. Even with the jeans they've started adding that stupid pre-crinkled effect like they're Top Shop two years ago. Lame.

Raw Patrick, Friday, 4 April 2008 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

Where is your computer made?

I bought my computer second-hand, if that makes any difference. I have no problem with buying second-hand clothes too.

I don't think it's a case of the-cheaper-the-clothes-the-worse-treated-the-workforce, though. I'm sure plenty of more expensive stores use sweatshop labour.

Maybe so, but with H & M you can be certain that all the clothes are made by exploited workers. Like Tracer said, with some other shops there as least the choice of buying something more ethical.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 April 2008 08:18 (seventeen years ago)

Also, are H & M really considered "hip" in some parts of the world? Because in here it's basically considered a store for "chavs", and few people with a hip taste or morals would buy their clothes there.

Tuomas, Friday, 4 April 2008 08:21 (seventeen years ago)

stevienixed, Friday, 4 April 2008 09:15 (seventeen years ago)

Also, WOOHOO, now I feel great about my 'rents living in Japan. heheh.

I buy at H&M but mostly for Ophelia (my oldest daughter). I don't feel any need to spend a lot of money on clothes for her. And they do make cute clothes for kids. The other day we washed one of the sweaters and the ink ran out. Well, so what? Threw it away. About 20 euros *wasted*. If it had been more expensive, I'd feel bad about it. But now I didn't have any qualms throwing it away.

No doubt Steve has plenty of interesting things to say about this but is enigmatically choosing not to.

hennes jeans are a false economy. i bought a pair six months back and they are all ripped and fraying - my girlfriend accidentally trod on the hem while we were walking to the bus yesterday, and now the left leg is all torn halfway up the calf - it tore like paper. my Levis, however, will last for ages.

I bought my computer second-hand, if that makes any difference.

uh dude that means nothing, if the machine is made in a third world country, then you are still in the wrong.

Really? I'd say that buying things second hand is different, because A) it doens't waste as much natural resources as buying new things, and B) it doesn't give any more money to support exploitative companies. And like Tracer pointed out, with clothes you can at least choose whether you want to support ethical labour or not. Just because you inevitably may have to buy some things that are made by exploitative companies doesn't mean you need to buy all your stuff from such companies just for the heck of it. Doing some things ethically is still better than doing nothing ethically just because you can't do everything ethically.

Persuasive point, gymnastically made.
