stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

busted would be a joy!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Keane seconded.

Maroon 5, surely.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The C to the Oldplay, the T to the Ravis.

Are The Rasmus British?

Jay-mee, Jamie Cullum.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Placebo

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Blur are working on a new album.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Interpol is from new york, though I do think they are pretty poncey.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ masturbating on the cross, I forgot about The Stands!

After The Rasmus, they'll be begging for Placebo.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Beth Orton will get some play for those customers too indie to buy Dido.

Is there such a thing?

22-20s are major ponce

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Are Hurricane #1 still at it? Stereophonics?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

[db get on im, fule. I'm bored at work and the chat must go on]

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

and there's always the next Richard Ashcroft solo album...

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh 22-20s

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Stereos are, but I think Hurricane #1 imploded. (Their Faustian deal ended.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

You Am I? (sorry, they always bored me, at least)

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh 22-20s

Exactly. Jim, always knew you had taste.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

See, thing is, poncey Brit bands from the 80s are now far more enjoyable than 90s or 2000 poncey Brit bands. Are we just seeing an excruciating increase in the ponceyness factor that's decaying at the musical quality?

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:28 (twenty-one years ago)

You Am I? (sorry, they always bored me, at least)

Now, tis more like "Who Were You?"

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

the poncey bands from the 80s had better taste

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Are we just seeing an excruciating increase in the ponceyness factor that's decaying at the musical quality?

I always thought ponceyness = lack of musical quality (or talent). Any exposure most of the poncy bands get is due to their publicist's desire to avoid the dole.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

gomez have a new album soon.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

how about the cooper temple clause? if i never see that stupid video featuring the guy turning into a goat, it will be too soon.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

aww they're ok. they've got spunk

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.usmusicvault.com/idlewildint.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised nobody has said BRMC yet.. even more surprised that strongo hasn't been subjected to them yet

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

idlewild roxx u r all anti-ponce

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Gomez are NOT poncey teeny you nutjob; they may be many things (me and Miccio say "awesome" other fools say "weak") but poncey I don't bloody well think so.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

If Gomez aren't poncey, then the world has lost all meaning.

BRMC = New York? Certainly American.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

2/3 of BRMC just really really really want to be British

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:42 (twenty-one years ago)

The Coral

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

*shudders*

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

BRMC = California (part SF, part LA) They just got dropped by Virgin though, so you might have a respite.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The Delays

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, yeah, I think the American wanna-be poncey Brit Bands are far more acerbic.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

aww they're ok. they've got spunk

but that video really, really annoys me!

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i wonder if he's been subjected to razorlight yet...

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

aieeeee

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Lost Prophets

de, Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i just realized it's muse that's the one i really hate

dude, shut up lostprophets are great!!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I always assumed the lostprophets were a conscious rap act.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

aren't they sports metal?

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, they're not conscious rap!?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought they were emo?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll be talking about Funeral for a Friend next.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't mind FfaF

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

If only they were actually called that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

They're from Wales. I don't know what 'kind' of metal they are.
I like this though:

"Lostprophets", why no space between the words?
Because thats how they wanted it spelt. Spaces are for losers

de, Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd listen to limp bizkit x1000 before i listened to any of this shit ever again

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

i just realized it's muse that's the one i really hate

Welcome home, Strongo

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The correct genre for Lostprophets is "Margera emo".

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Plus Lee from LP is the gayest man in British pop.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't calling Gomez poncey!

I wasn't not calling them poncey either. They bore me kinda but I like the new single, it's like smash mouth.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the new single, it's like smash mouth.

I think I just had a seizure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That's alright, so long as no-one seizure.

de, Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

suddenly i'm back working at the office supply store, summer of 99

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

does baz luhrman have a new single too?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

And maybe you'll get to hear this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

suddenly i'm back working at the office supply store, summer of 99

Careful what you wish for, and thanks for visiting the "ILX Time Machine".

They bore me kinda but I like the new single, it's like smash mouth.

No wonder, Gomez are the laid-back version of SM, and just as crap. (T, we can agree to disagree. Doesn't mean I don't love ya, really.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ, Jess, grow some ballz, dood, or I'll whack you w/ some Bluetones.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

dave i think the problem by implication is that my balls are in fact far too BIG

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(I really seriously suggest you check what I have linked to.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post Time till that gets posted on lol thread 10...9...8....

..., Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

ned the world doesnt make any sense anymore

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

No, no it does not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

When I worked in a record store I heard enough Portishead to last me fuhevah.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

...and EVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

*big echoey beat comes in*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 April 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

THE STILLS!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

poor strongo!

(well, maybve not poor as he's getting his paycheck soon)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

That Rasmus song is 'larious! And once I decided I had a slight crush on one of the Lost Prophets "members".

Then I saw them againt whilst sober.

If I hadn't already been sober, I would comment that it was "a sobering experience".

Sarah (starry), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway Rasmus = yankees, yesno? Or do I automatically assume all nu-metal bands of a certain weight are American? How racialist.

Oh, the Graham Coxon single? (I = racking my brane to remember what I heard on XFM last weekend).

Sarah (starry), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What Busted single are they trying to "break"? They'll go with one of the awful psuedo-emo ballads, I just know it... grrrr...

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rasmus are scandinavian..if XFM's the template then expect Keane, Snow Patrol and The sodding Delays over and over and over again.

winterland, Friday, 16 April 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Blinkin' flip, I only recognise Snow Patrol out of the above. I really only like music from television adverts now anyway. Perhaps Jess will hear "Papa Loves Mambo" and Air and Manitoba (who I believe are the current T-Mobile backing music foax, but gawd knows).

Sarah (starry), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Lostprofits are genetically engineered in Wales to be a NuMetalemo boyband, what with their matching "edgey" haircuts and everything. I would almost have a crush on the SHB-looking one if his music weren't so shite.

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Delays

chris (chris), Friday, 16 April 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The Calling

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rasmus are from Finland! (so not Scandinavian, coz I met some Finns once and they didn't like being called Scandinavian). I like the guitar part on their song, I'll probably get their album, seriously, they are this years Evanesecence.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Junior Senior (oh wait!)

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Robert Owens?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is really a revelation to me, because honestly, I haven't actually heard half the bands on this thread!

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Robert Owens has recorded a single with Busted.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Funeral For A Friend are great, seriously.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

that Rasmus band, are like a really bad rockist Eurovision band.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

that sounds like the best band ever DJ Martian!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

JET

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, it seems to be "What I go to School for" which has a release date of 5/4/2004 according to Towerrecords.com

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trying to think of the name of those awful bands that come on that show with what's her face, Cat Deleys mate...

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, that's alright then, MG. I just put it on a compilation for some American friends so I hope it does well. Woo! Maybe they'll let me join the Street Team and everything!

Super-Kate (kate), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway you Rasmus haters are just threatened by a dude who wears feathers in his hair! He's the new Adam Ant, so there!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

.. so I guess "Year 3000" will be up soon, and they can go through that whole "great great great granddaughter in another thousand years" debate all over again. I mean, they're still discussing how ironic Alanis Morrisette is, arent they?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I though Jet were Aussies?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 16 April 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But we've hardly been sticking to the UK so far!!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 16 April 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Super Furry Animals.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

..own a tank, and as such are not poncey.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Maroon 5, while poncey, are sadly American

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

The thought of Jessie being forced to listen to The Foxgloves is very satisfying.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

uh-huh

stevem (blueski), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

today we listened to the transformers movie ost. i don't know just how much, but that forgives a lot of snow patrol.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 25 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Every time I read a mentioning of Lostprophets, I had to smile or laugh. Naturally. Just wanted to let you know that. *ahem*

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 26 April 2004 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason, no matter which of the four in-store stations they play at work, I ALWAYS hear the Theme from Greatest American Hero.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Monday, 26 April 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

DEAR MC HAMMER PLZ KILL EUROEMO

NUMBER 1 TERRY RILEY FAN (ex machina), Monday, 26 April 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

A bit late to mensh, but You Am I, Baz Luhrman and Jet are all Australian, y'all. Some buncha knowledgeable music fans YOU lot are ;)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 26 April 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

update pls.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

This is something I wonder about, from time to time.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i love rjg's subtle influence, on ilx.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

He did have to break a rib, in the process.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Subtle but forceful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

richard's rib. it is an origin story, for our times.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 6 May 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(El Diablo's first sentence was correctly punctuated. The rest of you are preverts.)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't have a comma in my sentence!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(Then again, was it a sentence?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

BACK TO THE PLANET

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

this isn't my blame.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 6 May 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

get this scottish idiocy off my thread.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

and off my work stereo, now that i think of it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Was it...Franz Ferdinand?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

lately we have been listening to:

magnetic fields (good)
divine comedy (atrocious)
kimberly locke (OH GOD MAMMY MAKE IT STOP)
the martinis (paging 1995, your band is lost)
afro-celt soundsystem (strip my skin from my body and roll me in salt rather than this)
ultra dance vol. 5 (YAY)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

haha afrocelt soundsystem went straight to the sell pile the other day, still shrinkwrapped

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

today we listened to the transformers movie ost. i don't know just how much, but that forgives a lot of snow patrol.

No fair!

(I still like some Divine Comedy)

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

b-but fiddles and cod-drum & bass!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU LEAVE KIMBERLEY LOCKE ALONE

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not sure if that's an xpost to be honest

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha dan not even you could defend the kimberley locke album

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and we listened to the new morrissey today which is actually really good!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

OH NO

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I do think it's good that yr being exposed to all this stuff, just like it's good when I play horrible promos once for the "experience." (no joke)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

it's building character

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yr right though...if anything it straightens my resolve.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Divine Comedy, oh you poor sod. A band so terrible that not even their heavy involvement in one of (if not the) funniest Father Ted episodes could redeem them.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

straightens, strengthens, whatever

christ i am tired

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

when the divine comedy guy sings the lines "oscar wilde/what a lonely child" and "she wears doctor martins and a heavy heart" a small piece of me dies inside

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

FIDDLE MI SELECTOR

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it's odd, because the mimsy, ball-less, hookless quality of all the indie is making me more popist, but the runny, watery, hook-less quality of the all the pop is making me crave more noise and anti-pop

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

You got the touch, Jess. You got the power.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Divine Comedy was better before his mate decided he could arrange strings. Not heard anything for the last while.

Muse's new song is called Sing For Absolution. Think about it.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i was crushed to learn matos had already run a muse review. crushed.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

haha speaking of depressing, i also ready andy greenwald's emo book today at the register

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ricardo- I think it did redeem them. But I have watched that father ted episode far more than got to hear any of their records.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

two more things to depress strongo: I love the Andy Greenwald book and Rod Smith, who reviewed it, loves the Muse album!

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

At ATP a FOAF who ended up in our chalet ended up subjecting us to several different bootlegs of Divine Comedy gigs at 5 in the morning. I am still amazed that I managed to keep my temper.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, the book was good! i just find the "scene" depressing.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I kinda wondered! it's a really good book about really bad music, a true rarity.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

(haha DeRo to thread)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, this was after the same guy had introduced us to the worst drink in all the world, so I was feeling quite well disposed to him generally.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

they are playing at the trinity ball tomorrow. I will avoid them like hard work.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it was very informative because i really had no idea about the "rise" of all that shit.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ronan i want that last line on a t-shirt

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe not a t-shirt per se. maybe my tombstone.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

RT: Are you talking about the CIDER ARMADILLO???

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i was thinking it might have been a nipple clamp

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:01 (twenty-one years ago)

it's odd, because the mimsy, ball-less, hookless quality of all the indie is making me more popist, but the runny, watery, hook-less quality of the all the pop is making me crave more noise and anti-pop

Enjoy the silence?

it's a really good book about really bad music, a true rarity.

*intrigued* Is it the style combined with the information? Does it focus on -- if I can imagine it -- personalities?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ned, silence would leave me with my own thoughts.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Merzbow it is then.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i had to really fight the urge to slap the pita cd in my bag into the player when no one was looking

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you not allowed to use the cd player?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

If you wanna go out in a blaze of glory, rip the Gene cd out of the cd player and blast "Ante Up"

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:23 (twenty-one years ago)

haha i am going to force them to play that mop "hard rock" cd when it comes out

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Niggas thinkin' M.O.P. stands for 'mop' and shit!

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:02 (twenty-one years ago)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

How about some James Chance? I'm listening to the reissue of Buy the Contortions and it's spiff. In fact I think I should pitch this to an editor I know. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Saturday, 8 May 2004 02:33 (twenty-one years ago)

For Dan: the worst drink in the world. Imagine drinking so much Camp coffee essence that you vomited. And vomited. And vomited, until you were just throwing up bile. Now imagine the taste all that chicory tainted bile would leave in your mouth. That's what Unicum tastes like, only worse. Hungarians drink it for fun, apparently.

Ricardo (RickyT), Saturday, 8 May 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I LOVE UNICUM OMG!!!!! It's like concentrated Jaegermeister! YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Unicum? wtf?

(Also the bottle is GREBT)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What's in that name? Hell, what's in the drink?

Barima (Barima), Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I was introduced to it by a former roommate who called it Zwack because she refused to believe that it was actually called Unicum. (The drink, as I said before, is like concentrated Jaegermeister and is completely, totally heavenly.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

(listen not to his lies, it tastes disgusting)

Ricardo (RickyT), Saturday, 8 May 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm certain there's already a major band/recording artist named Ponce de Leon.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"major"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:46 (twenty-one years ago)

major = they opened for the crash test dummies in 1993

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:50 (twenty-one years ago)

(Because a school of fish can be huge... see? huhuhuuhuhuhuhuhuhuhu....*coughhackdie*)

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I see them open for Jesus Jones in 1991! The drummer threw his drumsticks out into the audience after their blisteringly mediocre delivery of alt rock passion.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man school of fish

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw an ad on tv today for "the buzz" a 2-disc set of the lamest 90s rock had to offer us

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

did alt-rock passion exist back then?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

WOOOAH-AH-OH HEAVEN LET YO LIGHT SHINE DOOWNNN

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

no no no, in '91, opening for Jesus Jones. by '94 you had to go to Greenland to get away from it.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

haha best live show ever: I'm waiting tables at First Avenue when Collective Soul play all-ages show. crowd buys beer, tips quarter. band gets to "Shine" about 2/3 through set and when they do the bridge-turnaround guitar thing (NER-nuh-nuh-nuh, pause, strangulated "yeah"), the absolute worst thing on the radio during the '90s, they pause and the ENTIRE AUDIENCE does the strangulated "yeah." I almost dropped my tray.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 8 May 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Matos, alt rock passion has existed ever since a wispy guy named Stipe decided to start a band in fucking 1979.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

just because they wrote a song called "Talk About the Passion" doesn't mean they evinced any on record until 1991 or so.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, come on. "Radio Free Eurpoe" is all passionate and sensitive and shit.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

on what planet?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The planet where earnest straining vocals and aggressively-strummed guitar in an uptempo number mixed in with call and response refrains and bridging arpeggios are signifiers of fey sensitive-guy passion.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, you mean England.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's not a planet but it might as well be

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

(NER-nuh-nuh-nuh, pause, strangulated "yeah"), the absolute worst thing on the radio during the '90s

Wow, Matos this is one of the most OTM things you've written (I'll forgive you for dissing the Jesus Lizard now!!) It really was some kind of nadir. So fucking contrived and lame. Purely as music, I mean. I don't care about Collective Soul, the band, grunge music, whatever. But god that fucking song.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

wasn't there some sort of frolicking gnome on the cover of their big album?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

If not, there should have been!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't even want to bother on that thread where J0hn and Tim Ellison were having a FITE, but the reason REM blow is that THEIR RHYTHM SECTION SUCKS.

Pretty simple, really.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

REM would have been about 800 times better if they'd been Echo & the Bunnymen.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

that cover makes me want to like them

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

that cover makes me think they'd sound like Genesis.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

where has Gier been lately, anyway?

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

that cover needs a comma!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

and while I'm asking, where has Geir been?

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

geirbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

haha the scene is strongo's high school, circa 10th or 11th grade, waiting for biology class to start, headphones on, pause tape:

numbskull: yeah, i just got the car. i can't wait until i can play that collective soul song in it and drive real fast. i love driving to that song.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

After he goes "WHOOO-OH-AH-OH" and before he goes "HEAVEN ... etc" there is this little guitar bend which is just this lame Smashing Pumpkins rip-off move.

Cockfarmers.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

isn't it sad, that that song has become synonymous w/ "nineties"?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Saturday, 8 May 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm now reminded of seeing Collective Soul open up for Aerosmith in Sept 94 or so. They got to use Aerosmith light show & big flashy-white-lights, which were pressed into service during the "Shine" performance. Hell, JACKYL played a better set than they did on the opening slot for a detroit Aerosmith gig the year before.

'Twas one of the few times I've pretty much nodded off at an arena show. Still, Aerosmith played "Seasons of Wither" that night, which was killer.

xpost-- would it be better or worse if the band associated with the Nineties was Candlebox?

its a good song. i saw in on the Target Video Network while shopping this weekend. the rest of the album has no use.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

A little more reserved and pretty, but I think both of the Montgolfier Brothers albums would qualify.. especially the vocal songs.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't see strongo's workmates being that open minded

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm. I did sorta like the album before this one, so maybe...

okay for real sometimes I pick songs for my radio station based on how much you all hate them.

Do they succeed? And does that say more about us or your listeners? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ok I was drunk when I typed that but it's kinda true; if a big cross-section of music lovers gets excited about something or tired of something at least I know that song/artist has reached some sort of critical mass. And if it fits in with what my station plays and I think it has potential, maybe I give it a spin. I did this with Jaime, too soon to tell whether it'll take off but it's doing okay so far. I did this with the strokes back in the day! Also the rapture. I got to Norah before you all did though. :b

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

critical mass.

Fuck the t-shirts - we need ILX robes and cowls.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

yes

gear (gear), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

the song was, "why couldn't a dove have landed on my son"

gear (gear), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:25 (nineteen years ago)

wouldnt that have just made him fall faster?

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

his song was young, presumably rather light. the dove could have carried him to a soft patch of grass

gear (gear), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:29 (nineteen years ago)

haha song=son, but that typo could work for latter-day clapton

gear (gear), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

Their song 'Why pt. 2' was kind of good despite lyrics about kissing your sweet surrender or something

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I still like the hook of this one:

In the air I'm tasting your perfection
Forgive me dear for my misdirection
As I crawl beneath this torture you adore
I fall face to face with my scars you've ignored

So tell me why it don't feel the same
Tell me why I've got to feel this way
Yeah you leave, you're gone
And I'm left here with the blame
So tell me why it don't feel the same

All my props I swear they were in order
Even with the warnings of your thunder
Now I pause to let my silence scream tonight
Awhile you roam like a serpent satellite

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:38 (nineteen years ago)

All my props I swear they were in order

gear (gear), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:40 (nineteen years ago)

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 5 January 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Collective Soul open for Aerosmith! They got to use the Aerosmith light set-up for that song and that song only!

kingfish holiday travesty (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 5 January 2006 05:34 (nineteen years ago)

After he goes "WHOOO-OH-AH-OH" and before he goes "HEAVEN ... etc" there is this little guitar bend which is just this lame Smashing Pumpkins rip-off move.

Cockfarmers.
