I am worried about Britney Spears's mental health.

I have been watching a lot of MTV on mute today while I read BOOKS and noticed that Britney's new video is merely a lengthy fantasy sequence in which she:

A) is dating Stephen Dorff, wtf?
B) commits suicide!

Perhaps I should email her representatives asking if she will get help? I feel she is practically a good friend of mine by now, I mean her video has been on 47 times in the last two hours and I am worried.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i just read that she got some hebraic script tattooed on her neck that is supposedly meaningless gibberish rather than the Kaballah power-sauce she'd intended

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

By saying that a video in which Britney dates Stephen Dorff and commits suicide is a fantasy sequence, do you mean my fantasy?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Which song is that for? The video on all the time here is Toxic, where she wishes she starred in Alias.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I am worried about NA's mental health.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish she made a video where she wished she starred in "All in the Family" that would be great.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the video for the song "Everything", it is apparently "spankin' new" according to the obnoxious graphic in the lower right corner constantly on the screen, obscuring my view of BRITNEY'S TITS when she strips and gets into the bathtub to slit her wrist.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard she was eating Cheetos TWICE last week on DIFFERENT DAYS.

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a story that she dressed up as a Pussycat Doll/burlesque stripper and popped out of a cake for her brother's birthday, I thought that was way more fucked up than the video.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

stephen dorff ain't worth it.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish she starred in a video where she undergoes Lacanian psychoanalysis, en español!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Forget her tits! Would almost be worth it to sit through 4 mins of obnoxiousness, just to see if she puts us out of her misery.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM's take on said video.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Angelina Jolie does that once a week for her brother, Nicole, that's not so weird.

xpost Sorry, but I think I'd rather not forget her tits.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"Forget her tits!"

This would require eternal sunshine of the spotless mind treatment.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

well, as we saw in the "Toxic" video, she has NO NIPPLES.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Angelina Jolie does that once a week for her brother

She should pick up the pace.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think if Michael Stipe had done that video with Stephen instead of Britney, REM would have been much better off than they are now.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Wouldn't that mean we couldn't forget about Michael Stipe's tits?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the ILM thread sucks ass cos mainly it is people trying to sound interesting about music. Anyway, it did occur to me that what with Britney's outfit in the video that it is meant to be Madonna/Sean Penn except I don't think Madonna committed suicide OR DID SHE that would explain a lot about her post-Erotica output. ZOMBIE MADONNA RESSURECTION FILM AT 10

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Allyzay threads. I miss them.

Jeann.e F.ury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Madonna in Paul-is-dead shocka

J (Jay), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm totally down for seeing her tits. They could well prove to be the most interesting part of her.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

meaningless gibberish rather than the Kaballah power-sauce she'd intended

Infallible proof of my theory.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

This zombie scenario sounds promising. (Jeanne OTM of course.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if Britney even knew who Stephen Dorff was when she met him.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Zombie Madonna would indeed explain a hell of a lot.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread made me miss Anthony as the title was very Ant-like.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I read the Kaballah tattoo thing too. Apparently they switched the letters around by accident, turning the intended meaning (which I forget), into gibberish.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder if Britney even knew who Stephen Dorff was when she met him.

I wonder if Stephen Dorff knew where he was when he met her.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I misread that as inflatable proof of my theory. My mind is gone.

Disturbing videos wot I have seen recently:

D12 featuring Eminem - My Band: within seconds of getting off stage, our hero is offered a blow job by two fans, both played by him in drag.

Usher - Yeah: in which a large drunk man terrorises an entire club into taking part in the worst dancing known to humanity.

Outkast - Hey Ya: featuring eight Dre 3000s (I would have been happy with seven, though)

Janet Jackson - Just A Little While: Janet attempts to steal her brother's spotlight, but just given the impression that he's escaped and has breast implants.

Avril Lavigne - Don't Tell Me: Angel Avril won't give it up, so Devil Avril stalks him around the city before ascending at the end.

Black Eyed Peas - Hey Mama: just because.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

stephen dorff ain't worth it.

First Alicia Silverstone and now Britney? WTF?

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, who is stephen dorff, it sucks to be stuck on this little island where we still only have toxic.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

He was a craptastic vampire in Blade and has been in a bunch of other b-movies.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

the weird part is that the video takes place in Vegas. And yet there's no other ref. to her marriage.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The new Beastie Boys video is nothing but clips of them dressed up in various "comedy" outfits, beating the shit out of each other.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That Avril song is my favourite of the year, after Christina Milian (her video is a tad disturbing too, she dances about in an oil slick).

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

but we also have britters right now. in brummagen.

isn't that lil' jon, love him too.

THERE'S A NEW BEASTIE VIDEO?!?

my fave video now is Roses.

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

but the Kaballah tattoo story is eerily familiar - I remember a couple of years ago hearing that Brit got a Japanese tattoo she got ages ago that was supposed to say "intriguing" or something but actually read "weird" due to transposed characters... so either she did the same thing twice or it's an urban myth type thing

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the ILM thread sucks ass cos mainly it is people trying to sound interesting about music.

Did nobody besides me notice how thoroughly Allyzay just summed up every ILM anything ever?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

As far as my, uh, in depth photo research on Britney shows, her only tattoo is on the small of her back.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

"We're the Beastie Boys, and the idea tank is at nil. Come back Spike Jonze!"

jel, you're a nice but strange man. The C. Milian song is nice but a bit light.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

my fave video now is Roses.

Best vid ever, though my evil imp was waiting for Cool Chick to choke on that gum

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:59 (twenty-one years ago)

She did the same thing twice - the story I read today (in the shitty Chi. Sun-Times tabloid) mentioned the Japanese tat as well.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the best thing about the "Everytime" video is the implication that if Britney is left to her own devices she will drown in a bathtub.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Spike Jonze's videos are basically exactly what I just described as being the Beastie's newest. What are you talking about, Andrew?

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the best thing about the "Everytime" video is the implication that if Britney is left to her own devices she will drown in a bathtub.

I could leave you
Say goodbye
Or I could love you
If I tried
And I would
And left to my own devices
I'll probably drown in a bathtub.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

(xpost) Yeah, but I don't think he'd do it again. Mind you I haven't seen the other one he did, Sure Shot. What's it like?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like all of his other videos.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

poor britney, "born to make you happy" is still her best song, and "opps I did it again".

nice but strange = :)

It's not like the one with Christopher Walken flying.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I read that she desperately wants out of tour, but is bound contractually, her boyfriend's wife is 7 months pregnant, and this is her second tatoo botch. Though the Chinese one, which I read she wanted to say 'mysterious' but said 'strange' is iffy--in Japanese which comes from Chinese as you all know--those two words are very close. The Kabbalah thing could be along the same lines. I just searched for the story--I think it was in the Post or Daily News--but I can't find it.

(many x-posts later)

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

We may be getting away from the main point, which is the worrying trend towards videos about how much it sucks to be famous. How long before a Britney/Robbie Williams duet?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

dudes, lets exnae on the x-posts?

Hopefully not until I have time to give myself a lobotomy.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm going to start writing songs about how it sucks to be famous, just so I can get that phase of my career over with.

Dan, I was wondering why no one noticed that. I thought I had lost my mind when I saw that. It's one of the first Google image results for "madonna"!!

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The Toxic star, who is touring Britain, denied that the controversial video for her new single Everytime was about suicide.

She said the video was about getting hit by a camera.

"There's a lot of controversy because people think the video is about suicide.

"But if you watch closely, my head gets hit by a camera and that's what it's about," she said.

WTF?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney weighs in:
"But if it was about suicide, I think it probably would have been a positive thing because the percentage rate in suicide right now is the highest it's ever been and I think that the more people are aware are of it, it makes the kids not feel alone."

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

WTF???

Ask For Samantha (thatgirl), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Why not replace this dorff character with the bloke from angel?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

B-b-b-but getting hit in the head by a camera is now an appropriate subject for a video?

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney is sad because no matter how many sit-ups she does her eyes are still too far apart. I'd kill myself too.

Did she seriously get "fushigi" tattooed on herself? Also what exactly is the difference between Kabbalah power sigils and gibberish anyway?

MTV: polishing a turd for almost a quarter century

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

!!! The camera scene is like two seconds of the video! The rest of the video is her and Stephen hurling huge glass objects around their hotel room and then Britney killing herself, assuming with one of the shards of broken glass she is picking up and throwing around, in a bathtub!!! Now she's just making shit up.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I love when Britney tries to explain things.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know which is more amusing, the 'explanation' or the weird sense that somehow Robbie isn't already famous.

Tombot's e-mail is a beautiful, beautiful thing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

why can't the video just be repeated shots of Dorffmeister getting hit by a camera? "That's for SFW, motherfuckerrrr!"

OMG "HEATHERS" IS COMING TRUE!!!!!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Spike Jonze should've made this video and they should've replaced Stephen Dorff with Christopher Walken and then it would've been EXACTLY LIKE that Madonna video where she gets strangled by a serial killer, except with suicide instead of strangulation.

Also, then her boyfriend would be Christopher Walken.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

B) commits suicide!

This is supposed to be:
a) "a joke"
b) "shocking"

Anyway, like the evidence to date was insufficient?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe Eamon should throw his pizza at Britney. And kill her with it.

Allyzay, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

So horribly true. It's almost like watching the video (which is hard for me to do, since I don't really have TV or anything).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

where did the term "tuning in tokyo" come from? meaning nipple-twisting, of course... i thought (horrifically) that it was my dad's thing

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Tune
In
Tokyo

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

where did the term "tuning in tokyo" come from? meaning nipple-twisting, of course

That's actually a slang term? I just thought David had gone insane for a moment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

If Britney's tits did form Voltron, she'd have finally reached the apex of her human-robot shtick.

I always thought she was a fembot, not an authentic human being.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll just wait for someone to make a "time of the month" joke now.

"Tuning in Tokyo" - heard it as a wee lad from high school doodz. Only time I've heard it.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

man i gotta start playing with Voltron more

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tune in Tokyo" was used in the movie Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Jason Alexander (either one) could totally be the "husky" Voltron pilot.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

the British equivalent: which one of you can pick up The Archers?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, what the fuck - Voltron pilots = cast of Seinfeld & Danny Pintauro.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Playing with Voltron": How euphemistic, Steve.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tune in Tokyo" was used in the movie Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

That one I missed from the days of my hot, tempestuous youth.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought she was a fembot, not an authentic human being.

I'm not sure fembots are waterproof.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, you missed out.

NB: I have actually done this; I was 11 (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, what the fuck - Voltron pilots = cast of Seinfeld & Danny Pintauro.

"D'ja ever notice that the BriTron has two control knobs, so you hafta use both hands to "Tune in Tokyo'? I mean, what's up with that?"

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, you missed out.

THE REGRETS OF AGE.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

j.lu has made the Booby Voltron cry.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I do my best. ;^}

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to this thread, I now picture Sparkly Britney as the freakish metal-covered woman from Superman 3.

Who's good with Photoshop?

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm the only person in the world who likes that swan dress. And I liked Lara Flynn Boyle's Tutu. And I liked that Gwyneth (givenchy?) where everyone said she should have worn a bra.
Maybe I have fashion empathy.
I saw Britney's concert 'The onyx hotel' it was terrible. She really can't dance. And it had an annoying fat guy with a feather sticking out of his head running around insulting people. It was awkward.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked the swan dress.

ha ha that Onyx Hotel thing sounds like a really bad Cirque du Soleil bit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 6 May 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

The swan dress was great, especially the matching purse!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

who didn't like the swan dress????!!!

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It really was like a bad cirque de soleil bit, and it was really obvious they had hired actors for him to insult.
I'm glad you all liked the swan dress, fashion validation.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, my mentioning of the swan dress was in no way meant as a diss of Bjork's style, I was trying to improve the visual.

Allyzay, Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

After rereading this, I'm reminded of Shakira's demented "Objection/Tango" video that featured (among other things) an animated sequence where Shakira pops a rival's breasts like they were balloons and a live-action torture sequence where she hooks her ex and comedy-breasted rival up to gigantic gears and spins them until they die.

Good times.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Like it's her comedy breasted rival's fault that Shakira is flat.

Allyzay, Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Shakira's nuts, what happened to her?

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

god that shakira thing was so earnest and leaden in its "humor", it was unbearable

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Bbbbbut she's glad about it, because you can't confuse them with mountains or something...?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot to add that in said animated sequence Shakira's ex is beaten up by Gay Batman and Gay Superman.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

also, the song sucked

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot to add that in said animated sequence Shakira's ex is beaten up by Gay Batman and Gay Superman.

I DEMAND PICTURES.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

take a time machine back to 2002 and watch any random 10 minutes of mtv

amateur!st (amateurist), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Or watch MTV Hits at around midnight.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I forgot to add that in said animated sequence Shakira's ex is beaten up by Gay Batman and Gay Superman.

HAHAHAHAHA nice!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

look it's clearly Janet Jackson who has the most Voltron-esque breasts

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(the use of 'look' there makes me think of that remark as if said by Tony Blair)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Steve, I've resisted bringing Bob from Fight Club into this, but you're pushing me.

Barima (Barima), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

needless to say, I am SO using "fashion empathy" from now on at every possible opportunity.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 6 May 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Voltron Breasts is a syndrome, It's called Mentos Boob. Many in Hollywood suffer particularly Mariah Carey.

Nellie (nellskies), Thursday, 6 May 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Je4nne ƒury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever it is, it's pretty powerful.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

So she has a Germs burn now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

They look like cig burns to me. She looks like Aileen Wuornos. Are my eyes playing tricks on me, or do I spy pubic stubble?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

what, exactly, is wrong with how she looks?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Gabbneb likes the post-coital-drunken-walk-of-shame look!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Britney, I'm sure you can afford to get your roots done. What is on her wrist? IV marks?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

from the neck down she looks like a God Street Wine fan

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

wow. she's all set for steel magnolias

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The only thing that would make that picture worse is if she were carrying her flip-flops.

Harold Media (kenan), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Gabbneb likes the 'God Street Wine fan' look

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure that's a bad tattoo on her wrist.

I really can't think of a single instance where showing the front of your panties and the tiniest tuft of pubic hair is a good about-town look.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

dude you've never been to florida

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought that was supposed to be an "emoboy" fetish?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the tiniest tuft of pubic hair

I'm pretty sure that's also a bad tattoo.

Harold Media (kenan), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the cross necklace + this ensemble.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm talking about the area BELOW the tattoo; you can totally see the top of her bush.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Her clothes are all crooked.

I feel like we're the fashion police.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

(I put a God Street Wine song on my Most Important Mixtape)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yer so sweet. She needs a man like you, oops.

Harold Media (kenan), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a lot of the "white trash" comments come from already *knowing* she's from Louisiana. That, and... well, it's weird that she's comfortable leaving the house that way.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Also -- jesus, blount. Where did *that* come from?

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You know everyone going on about cig burns on her wrist in the original pic seems to have overlooked the far more obvious explanation that they were stamps, from attending some kind of club (why they'd stamp someoen like her I dunno, but come on... STAMPS!)

She looks like shit though. But I always thought she did.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I reserve the right to make fun of my own kind.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I suspect the real issue here (and not just with Britney) is how many really rather unattractive people are in music/film/modelling etc and how good the media and makeup artists and photoshop diddlers are at making them look like gods. Which none of them are.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean you should see how much photoshop work goes into 80% of what you see in magazines.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Nah, you're cool. You just have to stop parsing sentences, is all.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, I know... "NEVER!"

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, I know, I should really quit my job.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

And then move back to Chicago.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"NEVER!"

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Because, you know, you can't live in New York with no job. Did n't you say *half* your income is rent?

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, it is. Living in Chicago with no job ain't fun either, though.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this what they mean when they say a thread has been "derailed"?

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, yes it is.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I think maybe it's for the best. We were about to have an angry throwdown about Britney Spear's heritage and relative attractiveness.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:53 (twenty-one years ago)

plenty of assholes on this thread now!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

That's it, blount. No warm squishy love for you!

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, four! hahaha just kidding Monsieur Pickles.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ehh... get a roommate. A roommate who's a dealer.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It'll be a lot like what I did for ten years in Austin.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

portland maine? from what i've read in stephen king books it's gonna suck ass.

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

no Portland, Oregon! If you can't find a job Kingfish, and I get pissed off at my brother, I'll give you his home address and number and you can be his "houseguest." Be as rude as possible, don't flush, leave beer cans everywhere, eat all their food, and never shower. The smarmy fuck deserves it.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Come to think of it, maybe I should go to Portland!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i've already found a place to live. Portland is weird. check some of tha apartment listings on Craigslist. they all mention "You must be employed". the guy who's house i'm getting a room at wants to see proof of local employment or verification of assets to cover three months rent.

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd prefer that to a credit check, honestly. They can hold six-yr-old debts over your head that way.

Harold Media (kenan), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

cocaine is a helluva drug.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oregon's unemployment is thru the roof i think

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

yup. i think it has something to do with the kind of person who moves there.

fortunately, i have about two degrees and a coupla years experience in doing mortgage shit. this should help get me a job as a cook in a bar or a bike messenger...

Lt. Kingfish Del Pickles (Kingfish), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Thursday, 26 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Britney Spears is NOT a normal person. She's been famous since she was, what, 9? And MEGAFAMOUS since she was 16 or 17. I defy anyone to be so famous for so long in such an industry and be a normal person. Michael fucking Jackson.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 26 August 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm turning into Bea Arthur.

After the knife was confiscated by TSA officials, the funnywoman pulled out a keyring from her bag and told the agent it belonged to the "terrorists", before throwing it at them.

As she boarded the plane, the Emmy-winning star told the TSA employees:
"We're all doomed."

A spokeswoman for Cape Air says: "Ms Arthur was cracking jokes and was a real character."

"the funnywoman"

That cap is fascinating though. On the one hand, it's a cap, and it's about asses, so that makes it pretty tacky. On the other hand, it's a reference to latin, so it makes her an intellectual. I say a reference to latin: there are some interestig decisions regarding umlauts and accents on the cap. On the whole, that cap shows the US dream of a classless society is alive, in many ways.

I can't really think of any good reason that a celebrity who's constantly tailed, tracked and hunted by paparazzi would go on their balcony in the nude to do what... water plants or something? i can't even really tell what she's doing. but there she is, nonetheless.

b) shows that Fred is a simpering twee milquetoast off the stage.
or
c) a) and b)

STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS

March 30, 2005

Dear False Tabloids,

As you read this letter, I bet you are asking yourself: Who? Who, me? Am I a false tabloid? Well, I don't know. But after this posting, I hope you are asking yourself a lot of questions. Your employees are a reflection of your magazine. Do you, Us Weekly, In Touch, Star and other desperate magazines want employees who are honest, or those who are liars? It seems to me that you'd prefer the latter. I'm really concerned about the people you hire to work at your companies. I'd like them to ask themselves the question, "What am I lying to myself about?" Is it that you are 50 pounds overweight? Is it that your children aren't making wise decisions? Or is it maybe that your husband or boyfriend is cheating on you? Until you face what is going on in your life, I guess you'll remain a false tabloid.

Britney

P.S. People Magazine is great in my book!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I just read a magazine article with Britney, where she talks about how "great" it was that the tabloids posted a ton of pictures of her looking like shit because she "didn't realize how fat" she'd become and how she was about to embark on some starvation diet a la Jessica Simpson to prove she wasn't letting herself go.

I'll be interested to see how she loses her mind after she has the baby cos she doesn't strike me as the type of body that will not put on a ton of weight while pregnant and will easily remove all the weight.

Also, she's going to be a single mother but I guess when you have that kind of money it's no biggie really.

Online casino buys Britney Spears’ alleged home pregnancy test
By Derrik J. Lang
NEW YORK (AP) — Online casino Golden Palace has spilled $5,001 US for Britney Spears’ alleged home pregnancy test.
“It’s hard to put a price on Britney Spears’ urine,” Golden Palace spokesman Drew Black told The Associated Press Wednesday.
Golden Palace says it purchased the test from Ottawa radio station Hot 89.9, which insists the test was retrieved from the trash outside Spears’ Los Angeles hotel room months ago.
The station didn’t leak news of the test until Spears and husband Kevin Federline revealed her pregnancy to the public last month.
“We don’t know for certain, of course,” said Black. “Obviously, it’s her alleged pregnancy test. I wasn’t there when she took the test.”
Golden Palace saw some buzz potential in the baby-making analyser.
“When we saw this particular item was up for grabs, we knew it was something we wanted to have to add to the collection of oddities we’ve amassed over the past several months,” said Black.
Other off-the-wall items owned by Golden Palace include a sandwich resembling the Virgin Mary, a Doritos chip that looks like the Pope’s hat and a haunted cane.
Black said Golden Palace is looking into going on tour with the out-of-the-ordinary objects.
Last month, the online casino paid $15,100 to a Connecticut woman to name her newborn GoldenPalace.com.

Dear Fans,

I think Arizona has to be one of the most healing places on Earth. Kevin and I were there for two peaceful and relaxing weeks. Our house was on the top of a mountain and was absolutely breathtaking. I lived at the spa and gym. Being in the desert does something to my soul. Every time I go there I have the most amazing experiences. My dad and my cousin, Laura Lynne, came to visit us for a few days. We saw Ashton Kutcher's new movie, "A Lot Like Love," which was adorable. We also ate at some amazing restaurants in Scottsdale. Eating for two is so much fun; I get to eat lots and lots!

My and Kevin's new UPN series is coming out soon. May 17th to be exact! Doing a documentary series seemed like the last thing I would do. Having our series compared to all the "reality shows" on television right now and putting ourselves out there seemed crazy, but that is exactly when I realized I should do it. The craziest things I've ever done have always been for the best. The incentive behind me doing this series wasn't for my career. So much happened last year much too fast and I really wanted to take advantage of this opportunity to reflect on all of it. It's like my own therapy. I hope you guys enjoy our little project! We are having so much fun putting it all together.

Well, I have to call my mom now. It's her 50th birthday today!!! It's time to party, Mom. I love you so much!!

Love always,
Britney

Britney Spears Gives Birth to Baby Boy, Report Says
Britney Spears and Kevin Federline announced the pregnancy in April.

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 14) - Pop singer Britney Spears gave birth to a baby boy at a Los Angeles hospital on Wednesday, Us Weekly magazine reported on its Web site.

Representatives for Spears were not immediately available for comment on the report, which said the 23-year-old entertainer gave birth by Caesarean section shortly before 1 p.m. PDT at Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center. Hospital officials declined to comment.

The magazine said Spears was taken to the hospital early on Wednesday morning with a police escort and accompanied by her husband, dancer Kevin Federline.

Spears, who married Federline in September last year, had been previously reported as saying she planned to have the baby by Caesarean section to avoid the pain of a natural birth.

The singer became a worldwide pop phenomenon at the age of 16 and has sold more than 60 million albums. She made no secret of her desire to become a mother at a young age and put touring, performances and public appearances on hold after her marriage.

Federline, 27, has two young children by his former girlfriend, actress Shar Jackson.

Is that common? I thought c-sections were still generally reserved for cases when standard birth was a danger to mother/child, rather than just a pain/vanity thing?

people are just crazy for c-sections these days, like I would kind of understand (although I would still think it was wrong) if she had a c-section a little early to avoid stretch marks or to keep the magic vadge all tight or whatever, but she's a dancer, surely she lives and works with pain all the time? No way, you can totally schedule an elective c-section. And if the delivery is at all difficult or taking too long they'll totally push you into having a c-section.

Is that common? I thought c-sections were still generally reserved for cases when standard birth was a danger to mother/child, rather than just a pain/vanity thing?

Like Walter says, it's not that difficult to demand.Especially if you are in a private hospital. A friend's cousin demanded a C-section because she wanted the delivery on a specific date. "I'm having my baby NOW. So do the C-section!"

I don't know, I wanted to have a C-section because I figured it'd be better (for various reasons). I know that the scar is pretty tiny (certainly compared to for example my mother's), only a few inches. But I now realize that natural birth has its advantages as well. You're up 'n' running much faster with a natural birth, if I'm not mistaken, and the healing process seems to be a bit more harder with a C-section. So I have been told. Not sure though.

nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

I thought c-sections were still generally reserved for cases when standard birth was a danger to mother/child, rather than just a pain/vanity thing?

According to a doctor mate of mine, in purely medical terms hospitals would generally prefer EVERY birth to be by caesarian section - apparently, it's far, far easier to guarantee the future health of mother and baby that way, as it's more controllable and monitorable (is that a word? whatever).

Also, too-posh-to-push celebs have c-sections all the time, don't they?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, that's strange. I just read in a report that homebirths (so that means natural births) are as safe as ones at hospitals.

You're up 'n' running much faster with a natural birth, if I'm not mistaken, and the healing process seems to be a bit more harder with a C-section. So I have been told. Not sure though.

You definitely have to stay in the hospital longer when you have a c-section.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

Charlie, that's strange. I just read in a report that homebirths (so that means natural births) are as safe as ones at hospitals.

That may be enturely true. It may also be true that by and large*, c-sections are safer than both home births and hospital-based natural births.

In summary:

C-Sections: quicker and generally safer for all concerned, apart of the risk of infection (certainly in the UK, where hospitals are manky). Longer recovery time. Prevents you having an army of kids. Keeps the magic in vadge.

Natural births: Shorter recovery time. Natural birthing feelgood factor. You can fire out babies like a Catholic rabbit until your ovaries shrivel. Vadge like a magician's sleeve.

Home births: Fuck no! Get your ass to a hospital!

Funny how there are so many men advocating C-sections on this thead. If nature had intended us to give birth that way, she would have provided us with zip-lock stomachs.

Anyway, what I want to know is, why has no one commented on the baby's name? Preston? PRESTON?!?!?

Ok, I know that celebrities like to name their babies after places, but a motorway service station seems a bit out of left field.

onimo otm (my sister and i were both c-sections).

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

Obviously, in a situation where the baby's or mother's life was at risk, a C-section is perferable. But people suggesting that somehow C-section is "better" than natural birth IN ALL CASES is offensive.

I and my brother were natural births. As was my (former) partner's baby's birth. Ain't nothing wrong with us, or our mothers. Pregnancy is not a disease and does not require a medical intervention by default.

This is very common in the Netherlands apparently. Statistics show that there's not much risk. But I'm not taking any chances. Fuck no. Not sure about C-section or natural birth. It both has (dis)advantages.

I understand what Kate means. It's a misconception to say that a C-section by default is safer. You can just as much have a safe delivery the natural way.

I dunno, I think Preston is okay. I mean, if she'd gone the Paltrow way and named it after a type of food, it's be Cheetohs or something.

nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

"evolution" didn't come up with contraception either.

pregnancy is not a disease but hey, guess where the incredibly high infant/mother mortality rate universal until a hundred years ago came from?

...

that's right!

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

there is no 'natural way'.

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

C-Sections: quicker and generally safer for all concerned

It's a misconception to say that a C-section by default is safer

I don't know which of you is right, so can either of you support these assertions? One of you has to be wrong.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Henry, I think you'd find your natural home on the Vagina Dentata thread :)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

How does "generally safer" = "better than natural birth IN ALL CASES"?

Oh, and while people are being offended, can I just point out that to say anyone who hasn't given birth isn't entitled to comment is offensive.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

hmmm, maybe the pro-choice lobby could pull the 'if you haven't done it, you can't comment on it' card sometime.

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

The problem is that I have read different reports. I don't care, just as long as my baby and I are safe. ;-)

nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

But people suggesting that somehow C-section is "better" than natural birth IN ALL CASES is offensive.

Just quoting a doctor, ma'am. Don't take it personally. No, pregnancy is not a disease and as such does not NEED medical intervention - in the same way that we were doing just fine with carrier pigeons before the postal service/aeroplanes/tinternet made things, y'know, a little easier.

Presumably you're anti-c only if it's for reasons of vanity?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:54 (twenty years ago)

I think C-sections are mostly done when a natural birth is too risky. So I always (wrongly?) assumed that C-section isn't the safest option. I only realized that the recovery is much quicker with natural birth and you can become pregnant sooner. (Or rather with C-section you have to wait about a year or so.)

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

pregnancy is not a disease but hey, guess where the incredibly high infant/mother mortality rate universal until a hundred years ago came from?

Pregnancy being "treated" by 19th century and previous doctors who were unaware of standards of hygeine, rather than being taken care of by midwives who were scrupulous about boiling water and cleanliness rituals and the like.

Sure, infant mortality rate records are not exactly reliable prior to the 19th century but a woman would have been better off with a midwife than a sawbones.

rather than being taken care of by midwives who were scrupulous about boiling water and cleanliness rituals and the like.

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

My cousin is a midwife. You got something to say about how that makes her a Daily Mail reader or something?

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:06 (twenty years ago)

no, no, just that the uncleanliness of hospitals, lack of midwives in the nhs (a statistical fact) is a mail saw these days.

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Mortality rates have improved across the board, in natural, assisted and c-section deliveries. All as a result of improvement in medical knowledge/procedures.
From what I can google, there is a slightly higher risk of infant mortality in c-sections (mainly because in many emergency cases the child is already in trouble) than in natural births.

Main risks in c-sections:
* infection of the wound
* thrombosis (clot) formation in the legs, which can be dangerous if part of the clot breaks off and lodges in the lungs
* excess bleeding
* temporary problems with bladder control, and
* temporary breathing difficulties for the baby.
Apart from the last one these are the same risks associated with any abdominal surgery.
I'm sure I don't need to list the risks associated with a 'natural' birth.

*note: I have never given birth so you can disregard this comment if you wish. Maybe others who have never given birth should 'fess up too...

(I only came in here so I could say "Vadge like a magician's sleeve")

i didn't mean my comment about britney being self absorbed to be snarky. i think she's lost her mind and it has a lot to do with having no education and never having thought about anything except britney. she's probably hardly read a book in her life and is surrounded by sychophants. even with a lot of money, she's going to have to grow up fast now that she's responsible for another living person, and i really hope she rises to the challenge.

carly (carly), Thursday, 15 September 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Why is she going to have to grow up fast? She's got enough money to hire like 8,000 nannies. She will never have to touch her baby again.

TEENY I LURVE YOU.

pro tool ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Thursday, 15 September 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

Of course doctors like c-section, it's surgical and they can set the timeframe! You leave the patient (whoops, I mean mother) in her bed for a specified time after it and then can check them out. Seriously, what hospital wants a woman caterwauling for an indeterminate number of hours before slowly pushing out a kid? C-section is going to have all the surgical risks, but fewer of those associated with actual delivery. Celebrities like it because you pop the kid out a little early, avoid stretch marks and any permanent damage (internal scarring aside) and get some plastic surgery to touch up the scar. Airbrushing takes it out in press pictures if there's anything left.

I don't see why anyone thinks caesarians are being attacked here. They're amazingly useful as a lifesaving procedure and can sidestep a lot of the dangers of giving birth, but celebrities are doing them as a vanity thing! I mean, unless you think they're a good thing because attempting natural childbirth is icky. In that case, why not artificial insemination instead of sex in the first place?

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 15 September 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

My god, I'm too irritated to read all the C-section posts before steam starts coming out my ears. Look, C-section is a godsend in cases with complications threatening either mother or child and DUH we should make use of modern medicine where it most benefits us but Kate is totally OTM, childbirth is not an inherently medical procedure and the fact that hospitals/doctors praise C-sections because they're more convenient for the medical staff and keep the delivering mothers knocked out and quiet gives me the fucking chills.

It's been known for a while that the close confines and contractions of the trip from womb to outside world are a strong stimulant to the infant and may affect infant neural development -- basically it serves as a big WAKE UP AND PAY ATTENTION and jumpstarts independent circulation, muscular stimulation, etc. Remains to be seen what this means in the long run but they've been talking about it for the last couple of years in my mother's child development classes. Also, experiments in rats have shown that females who are delivered by C-section are like 20% more likely to kill their own pups, and it's proposed that natural childbirth is accompanied by hormonal cycles that prepares the mum to feel the most satisfied and "maternal" after delivery, a cycle which doesn't occur during C-sect. (http://www.ratbehavior.org/infanticide.htm)

So, make of that what you will. Certainly there are extremely good reasons to perform C-sections WHEN THEY ACTUALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN HEALTH/SAFETY but there's increasing evidence that the elective C-sect is a very, very bad idea.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

According to a doctor mate of mine, in purely medical terms hospitals would generally prefer EVERY birth to be by caesarian section - apparently, it's far, far easier to guarantee the future health of mother and baby that way, as it's more controllable and monitorable (is that a word? whatever).

this is so fucked up

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Thursday, 15 September 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

This is completely fucked up. What is the matter with you people? If someone decides for WHATEVER REASON to get a C-section or to do natural birth, who GIVES A RAT'S ASS? Not every fucking thing is some kind of us v. them, men v. women issue for christ almighty's sake. I mean we're talking about a completely safe procedure for both mother and child, and it is not like the alternative procedure is free of health risks for the two involved. Why are you people getting your goddamned panties in a wad over it?

Also, rats in general are about 20% more likely to kill their young in general than humans are. Animals do that occasionally. Why not do a study on Muenchausen by proxy mothers and other women-who-kill-their-kids and see how many of them had c-sections? I mean it seems like a decent enough case study if this is what scientists want to do, pull police files and compare them to hospital files.

I'm not going to debate anything else Laurel said about the effect of the actual labor/birthing process on a baby, because I think her comments seem pretty reliable but OTOH myself, all of my sisters, and all of my cousins on my mother's side of the family were c-sections. I mean ultimately it's not going to be the only thing to affect a baby's development and if all else is normal and the doctors attempt to address this properly with stimuli etc this shouldn't be an issue.

I mean, honestly, if Britney had her baby natural style and still does what she probably plans to do, ie drop it off with nannies and live her life basically sans child, do you guys think the kid would be better off? Why is everyone getting all tored up over the c-section?

(just posting this cos, like, Kate's already decided to point out that apparently only men think this is not a big deal so I figg'd I'd be backin' 'em up since quite frankly due to my own personal female problems and the history in my family, I'm probably gonna go ahead and elect for a c-section right off the bat myself)

Ally OTM. If the doctor tells me natural birth is too risky (like it was for my mom and aunt) I'm going for the section. If you can't do something due to medical risk or complications (natural birth, breast feeding, etc.) other people have no right to make you feel guilty about it.

Ally, I know it's a sore subject because almost no one DOESN'T have an investment thanks to being delivered one way or the other. And seriously, people who are invested in having natural childbirths are people who are willing to believe that AS LONG AS NO ONE IS IN DANGER the natural experience will have emotional/hormonal/recovery/bonding/WHATEVER benefits even if it's not currently Proven by Science (or at least the establishment). Well, some of the benefits ARE proven but whatever, that's not this thread. If it's not your style to believe in that stuff, you probably won't be bothered.

This is exactly what I'm afraid of, Britney's failed comeback giving credence to the myth that she was ever a dynamic performer or even a particularly good dancer. She was bad last night, but not really any worse than in the past, she was just under greater scrutiny and had no snake-handling/Madonna-kissing prop to distract from the performance itself.

She said something about orifices and "whore-y". It wasn't really funny (is she ever) but the reception was totally icy.

Ms Misery, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

That was a dig on herself! She said that, considering what she had done with her own orifices, her last series of jokes about Paris was the pot calling the kettle "whorey". It wasn't funny, which was too bad because her whole thing about Paris chipping her teeth on prison bars painted like penises was.

HI DERE, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

pot calling the kettle "whorey"

Still calling Paris "whorey"!

By that point she had made the crowd very uncomfortable so either way the silence was soo painful. Even though it was funny, bringing Britney's kids into it was kind of cruel. Poor babies whose names I don't know. .

Ms Misery, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

Hey, maybe this was a brilliant bit of acting! It's a lot harder than you think to act like you're half drunk and you're singing out of time, you know. Not everyone can act as good as that.

StanM, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

(xp) It was an order of magnitude nicer than her last set of jokes, though, plus the construction of it subverts the insult because she's basically suggesting with the joke that she's done the same or worse (CAVEAT: I know it's part of a joke construction and therefore not necessarily true, whereas Paris's exploits are documented on film, so Sarah gets away with this equivalence because she has no sextape hanging around her neck).

I thought the Amy Winehouse gag was awesome.

HI DERE, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

She had to be intubated on air?

nabisco, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

She didn't even make it that far.

Ms Misery, Monday, 10 September 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 10 September 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

Sarah Silverman bombed harder than Steven Colbert at the Correspondents' Dinner, but was just as hilarious. Her face-vagina was a legendary moment. She should have launched into The Aristocrats once she realized that she was going down in flames, or at least tossed in a few 9/11 jokes.

Britney had the vitality and stage presence of Myra Breckinridge-era Mae West. Total disaster.

polyphonic, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

Sarah Silverman bombed harder than Steven Colbert at the Correspondents' Dinner, but was just as hilarious.

yep - both events are better when the host hates the honorees and the audience is too stupid/scared to laugh

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

or maybe they just didn't find Silverman repeating every routine she's ever done very funny? I'm surprised she didn't throw out the 'raped by a doctor' joke again. (And her delivery still sucks.)

The Britney stuff was amusing and I thought Cee-Lo/Kanye was pretty good, but everything in between was awkward.

milo z, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

and I don't mean awkward because of the audience or who she was making fun of, awkward because Silverman just isn't a funny person

milo z, Monday, 10 September 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

she's kind of hit or miss for me in the laughs dept but I have a weird admiration for her (and comedians that make people uncomfortable in general).

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

Britney pretty much looked and acted like every stripper I've ever met, so on that level the perf was a success.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

The strippers I've known were skinnier - meth does that to a girl. Britney seems to be a fan of the downers.

milo z, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

Ten bucks says she comes out and says she performed this way on purpose for that reason. Like her weird "I was in character" excuse for the umbrella-bashing incident.

Britney's performance was the pop star equivalent of seeing some old friend of yours from school years later on a social networking site. They're noticeably older and fatter, the confidence of their youth lost forever and they don't look too comfortable doing what they do today.

She looked okay and normal but should have dressed differently. There was no reason for the underwear. That kind of dress is abnormal and no normal woman would go on such a TV event dressed that way.

If that's regular sized, we are all in trouble.

call me capn-save-a-cheetoh, but strictly in terms of body shape i thought she looked kinda hot! hardly fat, anyway. she WAS definitely out of shape, though; think a lot of the reason people called her fat was cause she was moving like homer in a moomoo.

combatative? is that like a recitative but with guns instead of singing?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

When you combine the difference in the way her body is shaped with the video footage of her stumbling around the stage like a confused, lethargic toddler, it is not unreasonable to assume that she is not in the shape necessary to pull of a 3+ minute-long dance number.

Also Tracer: Yes.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

She did do the routine, after all. She executed the correct moves moment by moment, but did it while also clearing away her hair, etc., and showing no energy or enthusiasm. Given that she's been doing this kind of act basically her entire life, the drug/alcohol angle seems more central than the out-of-work angle.

Eazy, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I think if she had come out and actually been "Britney, bitch" no one would have said shit about how she looked. She really looked like "Lucky Star"-era Madonna and people loved her tummy. But the difference is Madonna was good.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery OTM. Fight the real enemy (pineapple.jpg).

HI DERE, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Ms. M. OTM. As a result, she embodies the Paris Hilton type of being known for being famous versus being known for being a great singer/dancer a la Janet Jackson and Paula Abdul.

Eazy, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

otm otm otm! actually SAYING "it's britney, bitch" would have given her a free pass for whatever. having it come off a minidisc was like... it's not actually britney, bitch.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm just saying that Jackson and Abdul set a standard, especially for those VMA set pieces, that show how poor this performance was.

Eazy, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

Alls I know is that if a woman who was already predisposed to having curves looks like THAT after having two kids and living the lifestyle she has for the past three years, she must have put in some work, post-rehab.

If that weren't Britney, most of the guys here would be all about a woman that has a body like that. Be honest. Nothing wrong with how she looked.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

what Eazy said. Hotness is way related to attitude. The primary component of sexiness is how you feel about yourself, and Britney pretty obviously has some esteem issues right now.

I think Fifty bought her too many Tuaca shots the night before.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

All the attitude v. appearance comments are OTM.

Alls I'm sayin is that a woman look like THAT after two kids and hard partyin' for two - four years? Who the hell is HER personal trainer?

B.L.A.M., Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think this performance was much worse than the one with the python. She didn't have a snake around her body to draw attention away from her somnambulic performance. She looks pretty (good), but I think the whole tarty bikini get-up was just RONG and, sadly, the choreography was "adapted" to a minimum standard of difficulty so she wouldn't fuck up too much.

I don't pity her at all. She's a rich trainwreck.

stevienixed, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

MASSIVE OTM.

No pity, as she will still be spending money from 2001 in 2010.

B.L.A.M., Tuesday, 11 September 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Sorry, but that song sucked. I'm not ruling out the chances of there being a couple of gems on the album, though. She's not too hot nowadays, but I don't think it's a "mummy thing"; it's just that her facial features require of her to be skinny/emaciated to really thrive. A little bit of dieting should do the trick.

Aside from the ugly cheap-ass lookin' weave, I thought she looked fine as well. Hell, her body looks way better than mine, and I've not even birthed one brat. The trouble is that she used to be uber-sculpted. But I don't like that super cut, 10% body fat look on women; it kind of makes me think they're really just trannies.

Now her half-hearted stumbling around onstage -- that was just awful to watch. I'm no Tracy Turnblad, but even my non-hot lardass could "dance" better than that.

marmotwolof, Thursday, 13 September 2007 05:51 (eighteen years ago)

Chris wants to go to L.A.

Ideally, he wants his own TV show. Meehan, the L.A. producer, thinks it could happen. Sunbulli, the MTV correspondent, is a bit more skeptical. "He has a lot of disadvantages going his way," Sunbulli said of Chris.

The first disadvantage: the newness of this notion that the web can be used as a "talent pool" for big media; the industry is still going through a learning curve on that, Sunbulli told me. The second: Chris's all-over-the-map videos, which range from sexy to serious, confessional to inspirational, and spoof to ambush interview. "Chris is hard to define, and anything that's hard to define in the industry is hard for them to accept," Sunbulli said. Third: the anything-goes atmosphere of the web, which is both a current help and future hindrance for Chris. "The web, at the end of the day, is unfiltered," Sunbulli told me. "You can get away with swearing; you can get away with everything you can't get away with on air. Unless a producer can come in and conform him, and he's willing to be conformed, he has a very difficult road ahead."

marmotwolof, Thursday, 13 September 2007 05:54 (eighteen years ago)

CNN featured Crocker on some "News of the Weird" type segment earlier. I am wondering if the "anchor's" laughter at him is indicative of any wider sentiment about him.

I have to think that, given any further coverage by the mainstream media in a sideshow manner, he's done. Unless he does something other than act like an outrageous, unfocused and homeschooled teen struggling to come to terms with an alternative sexual orientation in a home and community situation that does nothing to assist him in doing so.

Although, there may be an audience out there for that kind of thing.

Far too late, and far too much else running around in my brain for me to discuss this at this point.

According to the Stranger article, the clip I linked had already been viewed "more than 420,000 times on YouTube and nearly 1.6 million times on MySpace" back in May. So a shitload of people already knew who this dude was before this, it's like the Lonelygirl thread where we were all "who the fuck is Lonelygirl?"

Mr. Cry-Baby’s shot at those much coveted 15 minutes of fame was a dreadful scene to behold, but this pitiful pseudo-event is emblematic of the wishy-washy incidents that pass for cultural events these days. What is more, his perfomance had more than a whiff of dissemblance to it, so people were basically japing the crocodile tears of a man intent on inducing that precise reaction. One cannot fault him for skillfully playing the Web 2.0 rule-book, of course, but this is Internet culture at its most tedious, lauding make-believe funniments, the truly deserving events being dwarfed into insignificance.

I’m lolling, too. Gratuitous ad hominem attacks are gobs of fun.

Upon watching that Britney perfomance again, I started thinking of “Lucky” and how that song would have made the perfect companion to her worn-out countenance. The production is a bit Max Martin by-the-numbers, but its lyrics are amongst her strongest, fitting her present situation hand in glove.

Early morning
She wakes up
Knock, knock, knock on the door

It's time for makeup
Perfect smile
It's who they're all waiting for

They go,isn't she lovely
This Hollywood girl

And they say
she's so lucky, she's a star
But she cry, cry, cries with her lonely heart, thinking
If there is nothing missing in my life
Then why do these tears come at night.

Lost in an image, in her dream
But there's no one there to wake her up
And the world is spinning, and she keeps on winning
But tell me what happens when it stops?
They go…
"Isn't she lovely, this Hollywood girl?"

Ned, OT, but. I've been re-evaluating "Loveless" and the "Glider" and "Tremelo" singles after not having listened to them properly in...a dozen or so years! Anyhow, that is not some weird bragging points, but is more representative perhaps of weird holes in my record collection (e.g., I love, love, New Order, but bizarrely have never even bothered to d/l any mp3's by them, much less even purchased any proper vinyl/CD's...)

Soooo, in the next couple of days, I'm gonna revive an MBV thread, and give y'all some words as far as my present-day reactions to those records. (I will say this as preview: "Loomer" blows/blew my mind!)

On June 12, 2007, Kathy Griffin discussed her date with Nick Carter on Tyra. She jokingly alleged that he was illiterate and they showed him not being able to read the menu. However, he has been photographed reading books like the DaVinci Code, and notes James Redfield's classic bestseller "The Celestine Prophecy" as one of his favorites. [5]

Sources tell "The Insider" that Britney, back at home after being discharged from the hospital mere hours ago, attempted to leave her community but got only as far as the gate, where she found paparrazi waiting for her just outside.

Community? Why does that sound like commune?

Also, TMZ is convinced she's bipolar. I roffled at some of the comments. I think I'm more interested in teh comments than the actually "news".

Also, Dr Phil as in the twatty dude on telly? WTF. You can't make this shit up.

Pretty common practice for "at risk" types. Sucks that she's so obv at risk.

Speculation that she's had a serious psychotic break and is in full on DPD mode. That would explain the weird turns from British Lady (apparently she fully believes she is British when in this mode) to diva to Craze-o-tron.

TMZ has learned the plan to get Britney into UCLA Medical Center had been hatched for days -- it was aborted last night, but executed just minutes ago. And we're told the plan was so intricate the FAA had cleared airspace in route to the hospital.

Back at her house, Britney's psychiatrist told her she was going to the hospital. Her response was, "Is something wrong?" She was not resistant. She made hot chocolate and waited before paramedics arrived and placed her on a gurney.

We're told the psychiatrist felt her condition had deteriorated. Britney had not slept since Saturday -- a day and half longer than she stayed up in recent memory.

The reason she's at UCLA is her new treating psychiatrist practices out of that medical center.

We're told during her initial 72-hour stay she cannot be forced to take medication against her will. If, however, she refuses to take meds, the plan is for the the psych to go to court and have Britney held for an additional 14 days, during which time he can administer proper medications.

And get this ironic twist -- Lynne Spears and Adnan drove to the Medical Center in the same car. A source tells us when Lynne found out Britney was being committed, she blamed it on Sam and was extremely agitated. When Brit heard that, she screamed to her mother, "Shut the hell up."

We're told during her initial 72-hour stay she cannot be forced to take medication against her will. If, however, she refuses to take meds, the plan is for the the psych to go to court and have Britney held for an additional 14 days, during which time he can administer proper medications.

btw, just for anybody who's curious (fair warning, if you're not interested in the legalities of the CA psych system, this will be very TL;DR), here's the deal, unless california law has changed since I worked in the psych biz out there. The 72-hour hold is called a 5150 and is part of the Lanternman-Petris-Short act that dealt with standards of involuntary commitment. They can put a 5150 on anybody who presents a clear and present danger to himself/herself, to others, or who is gravely disabled (=can't feed self, protect self from harm, etc). Lots of people are qualified to write a 5150. I have seen obnoxious drunks find themselves in a locked psych ward after a hard night. It is sad because they wake up hung over & terrified & weirded-out. The 14-day is a 5250 and is like a sort of "well, you don't seem better, but it could be temporary" sort of thing. It also allows all the workers to get all their observations together for when they present the case for a temporary conservatorship/30-day hold. After that, if the treatment team still agrees that the person being held is unable to take care of himself/herself, a full conservatorship is issued, which means somebody else makes your decisions for you about whether you can stay in or out of a hospital.

The writer of the above bit says that "(Britney) can't be forced to take medications against her will" while on a 5150 but unless they've changed things a lot (they may have) this isn't entirely true. If she became combative to the point of harming others or herself, an M.D. can still order stat medications for the protection of the patient or of others.

yes she's obviously White Trash in how she dresses and speaks and stuff... but was is uncanny is how she has managed to take the whole trailer park clusterfuck social dynamic and hierarchy and set it up in a mansion in Beverly Hills or wherever the fuck she lives. She is just fucking trash to the core. A powerful glowing magnetoplasmic whorecore.
