A dreadful conversation in my apartment

As I sat glumly watching some bad movie on DVD, my roommate and several of her friends entered and began sitting around the table in the kitchen, drinking Heineken and talking loudly about music and other topics. I'm not saying the following quotes are right or wrong, I'm just presenting them here for all to enjoy.

----

"I'm not saying you can't like Wilco because you're not from Chicago, I'm just saying I appeciate what Tweeeeedy is saying more because I'm from there."

----

"It's like trying to compare Ryan Adams and Bruce Springsteen."

"Yeah, seriously, you just can't."

"Ryan Adams is just SUCH a genius and Bruce is white trash."

"Yeah, straight up."

----

"I can't believe Reagan died, how sad is that?"

"Really sad. He was one cool dude."

----

"I saw Jet and the Vines. OH. MY. GOD! Best live show I've ever seen."

----

"Oh this is so funny. Last weekend Nikki and I were bored so we went over to her boyfriend's house and took turns making out with him, it was so funny."

----

"Have you ever heard of Grandaddy? they're like Radiohead but not, you know?"

----

"Baby Jessica is so sad! I heard she can't walk and has to use braces like Forrest Gump, isn't that sad?"

----

"Ass sex is so dirty!" (followed by silence)

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Tweedy is from St. Louis.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

So did you say that last one to shut them all up?

Sengai, Monday, 7 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear, you need to keep your roomate around for entertainment purposes, kind of like people who own capuchin monkeys.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

it was part of a larger conversation, the silence was from my roommate and her best friend and me.

I will say that there's nothing more annoying than sitting around listening to a conversation about Wilco and have people refer to "Tweedy" by his last name only. Tweedy Tweedy Tweedy! Can't they just break up already?

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I regret to inform that there will only be several more months of excruciating entertainment, as I will be moving hopefully no later than Sept 15.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I only want to hear the word tweedy uttered in conversations involving fall fashion.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to tune it out, but I kept hearing it. "blahblahblahTweedyblahblahblahblahTweedyTweedyblahblahblahTweedygeniusTweedyblahblah"

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

1. I knew this was a Gear thread.

2. I had an uncontrollable spasm brought on by trying to hold my laughter in the net cafe.

3. Nikki's boyf is a lucky man.

4. Hang out with Girls Aloud fans and you can hear the same Tweedy spiel except with added "Cheryl" before each "Tweedy".

Oh man, Gear's post is just like an episode of Daria (with Daria replaced by a mention of buttsex).

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Monday, 7 June 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you ever heard of Grandaddy? they're like Radiohead but not, you know?

This should be quoted on the print ads for future Grandaddy releases.

1. I knew this was a Gear thread.

Same here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I really don't know how you keep from walking right up to these people and shitting on their laps, Gear. I wouldn't be able to help myself.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I really think the quotes speak for themselves.

"Gear, you need to keep your roomate around for entertainment purposes, kind of like people who own capuchin monkeys."

OTM.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

poo-flinging is the only rebuke an ass monkey understands.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Any Which Way You Can disproves this theory.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe I am asking how, but...how?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't it obvious?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, I don't know what she is talking about either)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Sondra Locke and Ruth Gordon are a crueler and more effective method for rebuking monkeys.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If Gear has the opportunity to fling Ruth Gordon's corpse at his roommate he should do that too.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds like my idea of fun.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got a fever which may or may not explain how hard this thread is making me laugh.

BTW, Gear, was your roommate ever aware that you were in the house during the Anal Event of 2004?

j.lu (j.lu), Monday, 7 June 2004 23:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely the whole thing was that Gear intentionally walked out of his room to see them when he couldn't take their antics anymore!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The thread of doom -- poor Gear knew that assplay was considered by the time of his second post.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 June 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm having a "fancy-a-Guinness" thing at my place sometime, look for the posted signs with the event's initials and directions.

Saturday I will be partying and enjoying the nightlife of a distant city of sin!

and my only wish re: Assplay '04 was that I walked out sooner and saw slightly less. which wouldn't have been as funny I suppose

I just wandered in from a night out and found yet more strange hipster fops in Urban Outfitters tees in my living room on my increasingly despairing couch, which I really believe is making a desperate attempt to break all the laws known to science and man and literally shout out "burn me!" Anyway, they were sitting around watching Rock Bodies on VH-1 and marveling at Nick Lachey's physique. Although it was noted by one young lady that "his arms are too big for me".

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't help seeing this thread as the initial rumblings in a Secret History / Basic Eight-style "group of friends joke about plotting murder but things get horribly real when Gear!'s roommate is found brutally deaded"...

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Just in case I didn't mention it, the story goes like this:

Feb 2003, Adam Green show at Spaceland in Los Angeles. I was invited by some friends to check him out, saying I probably wouldn't like him aside from "Jessica", a true statement) but it was cheap. And so I went. The opener of all people was the dreadful Jesse Malin, and most people were there to see him. After Malin finished his set, Green came out and played to a mostly empty room. After he finished, my friend Mikhail began darting around trying to talk to an amazingly beautiful girl, my friend Sam went off into a corner and sat down, and I went to the bar. This girl (future roomie) came up to me and started babbling away, asking me how old I was, because she had a bet with a friend. I said 28, we started talking music.

Possible warning signs off the bat:

- despite name-dropping The Magnetic Fields, Yo La Tengo, and other very very good bands, she admitted that "emo is a real guilty pleasure for me, tee hee" which I would have taken as "I love emo omg" if I wasn't so drunk.

- she was there to see Jesse Malin and not Adam Green.

- she said that while she was an actress, she "wasn't Hollywood", "never drank", "was just a regular girl", and "loved to read". Which of course meant "I'm not Hollywood, but I'm trying!", "I drink constantly!", "I'm insane!", and "I carry around copies of Glamorama but don't read them!"

we talked for awhile and exchanged numbers and figured we'd hang out. We didn't hang out for awhile, then we finally did sometime closer to summer. We got along well, she really wasn't too bad at that point. We talked about getting a place, just because we got along reasonably well and both wanted to live in a better area. So we agreed to find a place that we'd sign a year lease for, and almost immediately I realized she was a chameleon who presented whatever side would show her in the best light to whoever she was around. So I never saw the side that I see every day now, until it was too late. Now I have to deal with Ryan Adams blasting in my living room at 4am, dishes piled up everywhere, her friends parking in the parking spaces of other people who live in the building, my roommate getting drunk and flashing passerby at the corner of N0rt0n and G@rdner, and trucker hats + emo emo emo all the time.

Ultimately it's my own damn fault, I have no one to blame but myself. I should have made sure!

'Baby Jessica' doesn't Stuff

It's hardly as bad as that horrible October in 1987 when 18-month-old Jessica McClure fell down a well in Texas.

But her parents are still furious that some people think that "Baby Jessica," who's now 18 years old, has turned into a pin-up model for Stuff.

In their May issue, the mischievous editors at the lad mag did a spoof of People's "Where are they now?" feature by depicting "Baby Jessica" as a scantily clad knockout.

The magazine avoided a potential libel problem by identifying its busty, red-haired model as "Jessica McClain."

But the real Jessica's mom, Cissy McClure, says her daughter didn't appreciate being morphed into a bimbo.

"She was just so hurt," Cissy tells us. "We're all just really upset."

Stuff deputy editor Dan Bova, who got an angry call from Cissy, says the magazine meant no offense.

"I think it was obvious that it was a parody," he says.

Something of a surprise selection in the squad, Gygax has made his name with the Swiss Under-21 side and only made his full debut as recently as March.

A midfielder or forward, the 22-year-old is an uncompromosing presence with a sweet left foot which he puts to good effect with accurate crossing from out wide.

He is not blessed with great pace but more than makes up for that with his tireless running up front.

mandee "lovejoy" wright, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

mandee, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he was the dad or something. Or a neighbor. Or some dude.

NA (Nick A.), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I think he was Baby Jessica's father.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

her mom was 18

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

You were raised Catholic? Ah! The veil has been lifted from my eyes!

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "Chip" was a fireman.

mandee, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Even worse, I was raised Protestant but went to Catholic school.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

not on a date TOGETHER. Separately. Except schdeduled at the same time, so I'll have to make goofy excuses to leave and run around the corner to where date #2 is waiting.

mandee, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

3 dates in one night...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so there! However one of us will meet Mandee, and the other will meet, er, "Sandee" your identical twin sister who wears a different jacket and glasses and her hair up (or vice versa)

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The scenario in Gear's kitchen reminds me of an updated-for-the-00-decade version of The Dead Milkmen's "Bad Party."

"God I really hate these jokers. I can't Gene Loves Jezebel. If there is a god in heaven, I'm sure that band will burn in hell. Gonna shoot somebody if they don't stop talking about 'East Enders.'"

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

bah. "can't" should be "can't stand" in the quote above.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

'Gear's Kitchen' is the title of my next novel.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

"Gear' Kitchen" sounds like it should have been a Mary's Danish song.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

What's wrong with talking about Eastenders??

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I got no problem with it, but apparently the Dead Milkmen didn't like it in 1988.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The fuxors, that was (apparently) a vintage year.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

heheh. I know bupkes about EastEnders.

I do know Gene Loves Jezebel though, and Dead Milkmen were spot on about them being a shit sandwich of a band.

martin m. (mushrush), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm still waiting for a pic of the roomie. shurely she has a glossy available.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so there! However one of us will meet Mandee, and the other will meet, er, "Sandee" your identical twin sister who wears a different jacket and glasses and her hair up (or vice versa)

Now.. this is just turning into an Archie comic, isn't it.

mandee "killjoy" wright, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

She has a stackful of glossies in her room underneath a pile of Walkmen and Death Cab For Cutie CDs. I'll see what I can do. xpost

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yes and wacky Mrs Doubtfire/Two Much-esque hijinks will ensue.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Bonus if roomie's wearing a t-shirt with an emo band name/design on it (x-post).

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

xxxpost but Will Oldham was in a John Sayles movie, which shores up what little acting cred he had left, thank God

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

he was in a movie with Chris Cooper, who was the closeted gay Marine in American Beauty. Yet more connections and completed circles!

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
Any more?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 12 March 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

unfortunately I parted ways with my roommate on September 22nd 2004 around 3:37 PM and perhaps perversely in order to avoid her giving me a falsely enthusiastic goodbye hug I told her I'd be back the next day. She called "Okay!" from her room, whilst clutching a short man with glasses that I'd never seen before and looked suspiciously unlike the "boy" she'd been dating. I assumed I might hear from her at some point, because I might have owed her $5 on a utility bill, but that was that.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Saturday, 12 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

which was actually not techniaclly the last time I saw her, because that was a tale related previous, when she closed a door on me after a brief exchange. But this was the last exchange we had (I saw the short fella go into her room as I was moving stuff out).
