Please tell me things that I really need to know about ILX.

I suppose I could be described as a pseudo-lurker. Have posted about a dozen times (and then regretted it). I require illumination. What, for example, is an "x-post"? Or a "fuXor"? Guidance, advice and information of either a general or highly specific nature much appreciated. Esp. re: terminology/idioms. By the way, I've met Tom Ewing of Freaky Trigger fame a few times and - so I was subsequently told - alarmed him on at least one of those occasions. I don't quite know why.

dean? (deangulberry), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh - and the whole "excelsior" thing.

Function: noun
Etymology: trade name, from Latin, higher, comparative of excelsus high, from past participle of excellere: fine curled wood shavings used especially for packing fragile items.

Help!

Matt Thurgood (Matt T), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

From the FAQ:
C/D stands for Classic or Dud? The question is asking answerers to decide whether something is classic (i.e. good) or dud (i.e. bad) and to give reasons.

S/D stands for Search and Destroy? It is asked of a category - insects or Smiths records, for instance. The answerer says which items in the category they'd advise people to search for and which they'd like to see destroyed. Giving reasons.

POO/OPO stands for Pick One Only or One Pick Only. It is asked of a category and the respondent has to pick one item from that category as the best - giving reasons.

FAP stands for Fancy A Pint. It is used to ask fellow posters whether they would like to go out for a drink.

Maria D. (Maria D.), Friday, 23 July 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you, Maria. I'm about to read (or possibly reread) the FAQ, which is something that I really should have done before posting this. I'm sure that I've read it before but cannot seem to retain things very well these days.

Matt Thurgood (Matt T), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

OPO and POO are crappy, though, so don't start threads like that.

the -x0r suffix replaces x or k sounds for comic effect. "Sucks" becomes "sux0r" etc. It's hacker speak I think (?), viz "1337" ("leet", short for "elite") and the way Norman Pashmina writes.

TS stands for Taking Sides.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 23 July 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Excelsior is an ejaculation of praise, which I assume was picked up from Stan Lee's very extensive use of it in old Marvel comics. xpost is short for crosspost, i.e. postings crossing leading to possible confusion.

i've been posting for like three years and i still don't really get the "x0r" thing.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Saturday, 24 July 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's the same deal as "teh" for "the" i.e. making fun of chatroom-speak for "comic effect" as said upthread.

ok I'll ask cuz I've seen it on some threads -- what does RFI mean? The closest I could guess was "Rummage For Information".

weather1ngda1eson (Brian), Saturday, 24 July 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

close, I think. pretty sure it's Request For Information.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 24 July 2004 07:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks Aaron! But, I suppose, in my mind, it will always be rummage.

Thanks for all of your responses. I feel much better informed now. What does this one (the above) mean? Are you somebody that I know/knew/have met once and made a very bad impression upon? Please, God, don't tell me that your are a former student. If so, I'm leaving ILX forever. So - if you'd like to see the back of me, this would be an ideal time to engineer my exit by lying.

Matt Thurgood (Matt T), Saturday, 24 July 2004 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

By "former student", I mean a pupil that I once taught. I am a teacher, you see. Just to clarify.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 24 July 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Man alive! Still wondering about Pleasant Plains and what the devil his/her reply meant. It threw me for a while there, being addressed as "Mr Thurgood". Nobody has (routinely) called me that for a couple of years now because, at present, I work in a school for kids with learning disabilities (e.g. Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Down's Syndrome, ADHD, epilepsy etc.) and my students use my first name. It's obviously preferable to "Sir" (which I always detested) or "Mr Thurgood" (the pronunciation of which they fucked up one way or another - how difficult is it?). Anyways, thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. You are good people.

Matt Thurgood (Matt T), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Refer to the thread you have started and clarity will be thine.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 July 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Pasted from the thread I (clealy shouldn't have) started:

My thanks, Ned. Now I can sleep. I completely missed the reference. Not familiar with George Thorogood, you see. Funny how often I am called "Thorogood", even though my surname has but two syllables.

I might need some time to understand the etiquette around here.

IIRC There's an interesting story behind that...

Masked Gazza, Saturday, 24 July 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

oh it's not that grebt.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

That always confused me too. I wasn't sure what it meant, at first I thought it was a perversion of "grabbed" or "crept", i.e. "I grebt her arse" or "Roxymuzak grebt in through the window" or "Ned grebt up behind me and grebt my arse" and so on.

Gear! (Gear!), Saturday, 24 July 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

C-Man = example of cool, witty, funny ILXor. Most postees post on C-Man threads because they are invariably the most interesting.

Ned = example of uncool, unwitty, unfunny, ILXor. Ned has probably not had as much impact on ILX as C-Man.

And what does ILX mean?
I know it's I Love X, but you know, what does it all mean, what does it signify?

Bumfluff, Saturday, 24 July 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorta double reference -- 'roxor' and similar hacker speak influenced the name of the board, but 'x' also acts as something of a general value signifier in math (and maybe logic as well?). Since there were two chief boards by the time a unique server was setup, the idea was that this encompassed both of them and all the other ones as well.
