The point that's being missed here isn't so much dog latin starting a thread with the same subject as one that has been done before, but by the fact that he started a thread of impressions without really offering one up of his own. It's a problem because by the first post violating the rules of its own thread, the rest of the posts have no "rules" to follow. In other words, without a foundation to build upon, it's likely that this thread will just turn into another free-form chatter list that won't make sense to anyone who reads it past, say, next Thursday.

It's the whole bait-and-switch idea at work here. Stating a topic and not following through is not very ethical, IMHO. Do we follow someone who maybe has a good idea at heart, but goes about laying the groundwork under fradulent principles? If you tell everyone to do something, and they want to do it under faith, when you fail them, will you have anyone else to blame but themselves? I don't want to fault dog latin here because I know that he (she?) was just trying to come up with something fun for all of us to do on a Thursday afternoon in July, but this has definitely become something that I'll think twice about next time I see his (her?) name at the top of a thread like this.

And Ned imitating himself by not imitating himself is actually quite, quite sublime. By doing this, he's following through with the intention of the thread, but not playing by its rules since, as I stated above, there were no rules to begin with. The only thing that I would have suggested is a "use the search feature!" statement in the context of his post, if not at the very least, a few links to some of the older threads with this topic.

(Though I should add that if there are any funny "Ilxor Impressions" threads, they won't actually relate to this one since this one isn't really an "Ilxor Impression" thread. Much like alisa's impression of Ned not doing an impression of himself as himself? Or is it just an impression of one of the previous threads? Has this all been some sort of Neil Hamburgerian joke on us all?) The meta-lization of this place has become quite staggering, IMHO.

Has anybody considered how the veritable post-Surrealism of the 'human-mind' Turing engine relates to the a priori premise of the thread (which is that our personas vis-a-vis the ILE digital environment / space are reducible to dictive, grammatical and spelling based constructions) and the broader implications this might have on the replacability of the IRL personas with image-less avatar incorporations? We shouldn't overlook these things, lest we fall into the trap of the 'meat-less' InterWeb culture so sagely predicted by such Dadaist art as the iconic R. Mutt toilet, in which the artist is little more than a Benjaminian prsence on the periphery of its creation.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

I've only skimmed this thread, but already I miss the excitement of posts potentially spinning out of control (which I do get but only a little bit from the first third of this thread, before jaymc's first Chuck Eddy impression, which might as well be Meltzer's 1966 cutoff date for rock). Otherwise I feel like people are just holding back here, hedging their bets. Where's the passion? More importantly, where's the lack of passion? (Lacking being as important to imitation as having ever was, of course.) There's more Garth Brooks than reggae in between the lines of this thread, but then there's more punk in Brooks than there ever was in reggae, just like there was more Brooks in reggae than there ever was in punk, and there's more Brooks-reggae in "Sister Ray" than there was in Bo Diddley. I hope I explained that well enough, but remember that you have as much right to decide what my point is as I do.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

See, I really get my hackles raised at the objectivity implied here.

One of the things that appeals to me about cinema, and why I've chosen to stake my online life on it more than anything else, is that it can be experienced in such different ways -- in the multiplex vs. in a museum, on DVD by yourself vs. at a midnight screening with a thousand others, as an illegal download vs. shuffled by chapter, in the background barely paid attention to vs. on a flatscreen THX home theater cranked up loud and listening alertly -- all of which constitute the fabric of our daily lives and none of which are considered the Right Way to Watch. Imagery is always happening, and we're always looking toward and away from it, seizing it when we're compelled by it, ignoring it when we get annoyed or bored.

And more than that, there's SO MUCH FILM that it's impossible to see it all, and we all know that. If I admit I've never seen a Hitchcock film in its entirety, no one will totally discredit my opinion (at least I hope not!) because it's understood that I've made choices as to what to listen to, and that I probably make up for it by being informed about plenty of other movies. We can't all watch J-horror, so I'm the guy who watches J-horror instead of Hitchcock. (And then there are the schools that will tell me Hitchcock is irrelevant, anyway, so no worries.)

So a good film discussion, I think, is perhaps one that assembles some of these ongoing fragmentary, chaotic experiences and reflections into a cohesive structure.

But music, because it a) usually entails a more deliberate, focused experience, and b) has a more limited range of choices (only a few decent albums released each year, in the same few genres, as opposed to several thousand films, some even without genre), I think there's maybe a desire to be more on the same page when entering into the discussion. You can either choose to work within the parameters of the serious muso, by immersing yourself in the important, innovative, and audacious works within the medium and listening with attentiveness, or you have no excuse. There's a lot less patience for the dilettante.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

By the way, this thread's best imitation by a nonimitator who doesn't realize he's being an imitator is Anthony M's "Alex in NYC" post, who's doing a Yardbirds/Kinks-style takeoff on Dan without realizing it. I don't know where Dan picked it up, but he might have gotten his Alex moves from Ned, who got them from the pinefox, who got them from James Joyce, who got them from 14th century Irish lullabies. But there's more disco in Joyce than there is in Miccio-as-Alex. And I think "Homosexual II" has better hooks than Joyce. I'd love to hear her rendition of "Finnegan's Wake." Not the book, the song.

Unfortunately, Dr. Morbius, as you well know from the ever-dwindling number of participants at ILF, there are plenty of unenlightened viewers here who do have those priorities backwards. I consider myself extremely fortunate in that I was introduced at an early age to the idea that cinema was an artform and have never deviated from that credo, both in my viewing habits and in my attempts here to champion the lesser known but aesthetically superior masterpieces of the avant-garde over the mental mulch of the multiplex that so many here sop up mindlessly, like cows chewing their cinematic cud.

(no, jaymc it was bad, but I just couldn't resist the berberian thing. I had another idea for a jaymc post, let me try that one)

Funny that you mention "poutine." I was just thinking about poutine earlier today. WHY did YOU mention poutine?!

witeout (dr g), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Maybe because you're a jackass and offering nothing to this thread?

You're all idiots.

Wow, this subject really hits close to home so I'd feel best if I didn't say anything at all. However i HAVE been giving this subject ALOT of thought lately and find that most of you are basically siding with adolescent, misogynist, chauvinistic little BOYS.

This new Madonna/Go-Betweens collaboration has got me more excited than I've been about anything all year- I don't know why the rest of ILM doesn't follow suit.

(I didn't get that last one either)

sorry dudes, i don't really get this whole "imitating each other" thing. it just sounds like a bunch of college kids congratsulating each other for being so clever and then arguing about whether to buy volvos or volkwasagens to drive to the office in. gimme a real conversation about puking and sticking my dick in things, ya know?

G'day! Just look at my hair in this photo from 1986 that you haven't seen about 10,000 times already! I look like Judy Tambalele from the Hanging Baskets, or Pandora Johnson or something!

JTS, Monday, 5 May 2008 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

I am not sure that I care for the word "G'day". There was a time when ILX was free of such impertinences, and one would be certain to greet all but the most intimate of acquaintances with a carefully enunciated "Good day to you my dear Sir". Perhaps such things are considered old-fashioned today, as the lower orders bring their own gutter idiom to this once sacrosanct hall of learning. A pity.

If I knew how to impersonate Abbott's voice, I could increase my ILX popularity by leaps and bounds. Alas, the secret evades me. Plus my eyeglasses are too twerpy for words. I'm stuck being who I am.

oh no it turns out I'm a total waste of space, brb I just have to pretend to quit ILX again, be back with another witty username in two minutes

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip Annoyman, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

Well, Michael Philip Philip Philip philip , no matter how witty and/or right your remark was, it comes across supercilious. I agree that many of Dom Passantino's internet gang are xenophic lads but I don't expect every member to be as such. It's dangerous to make generalisations. By the way calling names is never going to lead to a healthy discussion. I am as much guilty of it as the next person. And 77 doesn't necessarily make one a better man/woman. Anyway, don't mean it the wrong way. Anyway I am sure you can join back up in a week or two. But use a non-hotmail or yahoo account. I am sure they'll let you back in.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 13:31 (seventeen years ago)

I don't recognize most of the impressions.

The best impressions thread was the one where Dr C uncannily mimicked people, deploying information that he had no way of knowing.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

Hey PF - what is it that I knew that I had no way of knowing, and how do you know?

PS - are you and Gooblar still doing Brooce at the ILX gig?

Dr.C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

Marcello already linked to it.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

I think it was something that Steady Mike had posted on an old audiophile thread? which you couldn't possibly have read, but seemed to replicate exactly, in your quite magnificent and unforgettable parody of his exquisite style. You wrote about some imaginary recording of mine which he was going to produce with certain FX - 'sounds good to these ears'.

I also remember the uncanny time you identified almost the exact locale of the school outside which Stevie T and I were standing in an iconic Foxgloves photo. You were on fire in those days. Perhaps you still are!

Yes, I do hope to play with Gooblar; hope you'll enjoy!

the pinefox, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:01 (seventeen years ago)

You were on fire in those days. Perhaps you still are!

My heart's not in it these days, for all the reasons you summarised on the 'eras' thread. I miss FAPs too.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Don't really do FAPs any more, do we?

Dingbod Kesterson, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

We should. I just fear that if I suggested one no-one would come.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

Suggest it. They will come.

Tom D., Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

Having never been to any of the older FAPs, I could fancy a trip down to see you all TBH (Saw Tom too briefly at the gig last year)

Pashmina, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

Pash - there's this years gig next month.

But an oldskool pub FAP would be good before then maybe.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

I'd even go to one in south London.

Ed, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

Steady on there - are you sure?

We should aim for late this month maybe. I'm thinking glass'ouse stores for real old skool vibes. How to get the word out to the people who don't post here any more?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

OK, Doc: if you wanna GHS FAP I'll try to make it, like I always have before when you've been involved.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

LDN FAP YES.

G00blar, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 16:59 (seventeen years ago)
