Alex in NYC *IS* a Daddy

Continuing on from this thread....

Alex in NYC to be a daddy!

..if only because said thread has gotten to the point where it takes entirely too long to load. At this point, I'm somewhat at a loss to define any reason for this thread beyond familial pride, but maybe it can serve as a beacon of hope for those doubting few of you out there considering parenthood: if a foul-tempered reprobate like myself can raise such a -- if I do say so myself -- beautiful child, so can you. Anyway....

That pic in the JD shirt is so perfect I shall make it my background.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

See, now you wonder why the other page took so long to load. I'm typing this and the pictures STILL haven't shown up all the way. Anyway, how is it going? what's baby doing? what new tricks has she learned. I love new baby tricks. Is she sleeping all night?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That pic in the JD shirt is so perfect I shall make it my background.

It is pretty great. From death, life! Or um something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:34 (twenty-one years ago)

so cute!

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Baby's fine, although we're still having a devil of a time weaning (though she's gotten a little bit better). She's now turning over...almost sitting up and is starting to grab things....which is somewhat worrying. She makes a whole mess of noise, but nothing entirely coherent as yet (typical exclamation is "ahhh-goooooooooooiiiiishssshhshshs...." culminating in a spluttery rasberry sound). It's most entertaining. She still throws the occaissional wobbly, but that's to be expected (especially after long train or bus trips out to Long Island, wherein she is transformed into Cranky McNoisypants.)

But, overall, we have absolutely no complaints.

Fred Durst wants his shirt back, Alex.

(the baby is unspeakably cute)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Fred sports the blue one. I wear the white one.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

alex man your baby is far out cute

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I totally forgot to mention how utterly adorable your baby is. She's beautiful. And I was gonna make the obligatory joke about, "sheesh, it's a good thing she took after your wife instead of you, ha ha!", but I'm sure you've heard it a million times. But, you know, it is a good thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(hee hee)

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(trying...to...avoid)

alex be happy
that you're able to be as
involved as you are!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

If you do have a problem with the sleeping through the night thing, I would totally recommend the controlled-crying method. It sounds cruel, but it's really not. We did it with Rufus at 6 months and it took 2 days for him to sleep solidly all night long. It was like magic. And our sanity was restored within a week.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I would totally recommend the controlled-crying method. It sounds cruel, but it's really not.

Er? What is this exactly, some sort of happy Milgram technique?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

it involves carefully timed exposure to onions and Johnsons & Johnsons.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what a Milgram is, Ned. No, it's just an initially excruciating but quite painless way to get a baby to sleep all night. You put the baby in the crib, say night-night, you let them cry for 5 minutes and then you go pick them up. Then you put them back in the crib and let them cry for 10 minutes and then go pick them up again. You repeat this at longer intervals until they fall asleep. 2 or 3 days later when you put them down they know the drill and just fall asleep. Hopefully. It worked for us. It only works for babies 6 months and older though. Cuz younger babies are fiends for the late-nite milk. Some people can't handle the crying. It's worth it for everybody though, if you ask me. I don't know about people who sleep with their baby in the same bed though.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

controlled crying did NOT work for us, either time.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what a Milgram is, Ned

I was making a bizarro reference to the guy behind the Stanford prison experiments, et al. Refer to that one song on Peter Gabriel's So.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Controlled crying worked beautifully for our first kid (my wife went out to work and I left me to do it cos she would've given in and i am a hard hearted selfish bastard) but worked dismally on our second.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

o, and thats a beautiful baby alex!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

after like two months
we thought up new strategy:
night by night by night

sometimes let them scream,
sometimes whoops they're here in bed
sometimes went for drive

late-night odysseys,
me and sam and e.badu
"large coffee, to go"

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, just like anything else, it's not gonna work with every baby. They are all different. We just couldn't believe our good luck. It almost seemed too easy.

Ned- I think I saw a horrifying documentary about the Stanford thing. They filmed it all, right? Yeah, it was creepy. If you want really creepy though, pick up the book about the stuff they did to actual prisoners in Philadelphia in, i think, the 50's. It's gruesome stuff. The book was called Acres Of Skin ( I think).

Oh jeez, I'm sorry, i don't know what this is doing on the nice baby thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

DOOM DEATH DESTRUCTION!

These have nothing to do with many of the bands Alex loves. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

This stuff is all good to read about as my own baby boy is due to arrive in November. I don't know enough dads, so please carry on.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, she's a real sweet looking kid and the same good will to yours, mcd. And folks, please be kind and do not let my wife hear of this controlled cying method as I'm thinking that she will use it on me.

jim wentworth (wench), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

And Alex your kid is freakin cute.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm the full-time baby-watcher and I'm the only dad I know who does that. It can feel a bit isolating at times. We take Rufus to a playgroup they have at the high school during the week and when I go I never talk to anybody. Not on purpose or anything, but most of the mothers know each other and everything and they don't really talk to me. When Maria goes by herself she always comes home with lots of stories that the mothers told her and she is no more social than me. The moms just kinda want to talk to other moms. I was the only dad at the music class we took him too for a couple months too. The teacher made a big point of telling me EVERY WEEK how GREAT it was that I was there. Which was a little embarrassing. More embarrassing than skipping in a circle with 15 women holding drums and tambourines anyway.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:15 (twenty-one years ago)

The last time I took Rufus for a check-up the nurse came into the room and the first thing she said to me in her best talking-to-a-4-year-old voice was: "So, Have you ever done this before?" I wanted to say, what, take my kid to the doctor's office? He's a year and a half old! I should say I have, my good woman! Many times. I could probably show you a thing or two about picking the right consolation-prize sticker to give him after the inoculation-shot!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:30 (twenty-one years ago)

BABYFACE!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 August 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Awww too cwute Alex!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 5 August 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

For what it's worth, she's being a right royal pain in the ass today. Weaning sucks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex my sympathies, it's sounds awful. Stick at it, surely it can only get easier, can't it??!!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I would assume and hope so, but I've certainly been wrong before (as many people on ILX will gladly testify).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, you'll be fine dude! :-)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex, you are menko. The look on a baby's face ("Fuck me! This tastes of something!") when you feed it something simple like pureed potato for the first time is k-classic. OK, they haven't mastered swallowing, so you just end up pushing it all back in until it's all disappeared down their throat, but a joy nonetheless.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"menko"?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

What Aldo said. Our baby's six months old and just started solid food in the last couple of weeks. Mashed apple got a very startled OMGWTF?!?! expression. Mashed potato however was greeted with a *lot* of joy - mad smiling laughter and vigorous arm-flapping.

Alex, you've got a fantastic couple of months ahead, in between bouts of teething screams.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

A peaceful wee one, that.

don't know what a Milgram is, Ned

I was making a bizarro reference to the guy behind the Stanford prison experiments, et al. Refer to that one song on Peter Gabriel's So.

You've got the names mixed up. Zimbardo is the Stanford Prison guy. Milgram was the Yale prof who ran the obedience tests

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Zimbardo sounds like he should be conducting an orchestra or leading a circus. "The Great Zimbardo!"

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 2 September 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Un bebe magnifique! :-) Nice rug there as well, my parents have some great Persian ones some decades old.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 2 September 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanky, Ned. That rug (procured in Lebanon) was gathering dust in Peg's parents' attic until we helped ourselves to it.

Sad....Peggy & the baby left yesterday for Houston, TX (where her folks live) for two weeks. I'm joining them on the 17th, but until then, the house is mighty quiet. :(

That said, I'm catching up on a lot of drinking and hoping to re-connect with long-since forsaken friends. Still...lonely for little Charlotte.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 September 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Aww alex, that must be harsh. Is this your first significant amount of time away from her? (BTW that first pic of her in her 'new york' outfit was the cutest by far, what a gorgeous little smirk!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 3 September 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this your first significant amount of time away from her?

yes. It's quite strange not having her in the house. Not that she requires constant attention, but it's strange to have ::::COMPLETE STILLNESS & SILENCE::::: ....although I'm doing my best to stave that off right now via volumous airings of Solid Gold by Gang of Four.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 September 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I suppose it's something you get used to, having some noise around! I guess in my case I'm still preferring silence to noise, but that seems to be changing somewhat...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 September 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Beautiful baby!!

I think the most appealing thing about having kids (to me, right now) would be playing them all this amazing music and showing them movies for the first time. That, to me, would be the most fun ever. You should play Donovan's "A Gift From a Flower..." totally..

Adam Bruneau (oliver8bit), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Music Charlotte's responded favorably to thus far:

"Pressure Drop" by the Clash
"Computer World" by Kraftwerk
"The Good Son" by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

what has she responded negatively to?

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, she hasn't cried at anything, but the above three tracks made her stop and listen (I'm guessing here) and smile.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

She has not as yet -- it should be noted -- raised her little fists aloft and chortled joyously at the airing of any Killing Joke, despite my best efforts.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the most appealing thing about having kids (to me, right now) would be playing them all this amazing music and showing them movies for the first time

Or watching them the first time they taste chocolate or ice-cream. The reactions are fantastic and so very cute.

Penelope_111 (Penelope_111), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Soon enough...

She's just gorgeous (as you know). I understand about the complete silence and stillness - when Spencer was about 18 months, my mom took him to New Zealand and Australia for Christmas, and I was positively bereft. Enjoy your alone time!

luna (luna.c), Friday, 3 September 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

She has not as yet -- it should be noted -- raised her little fists aloft and chortled joyously at the airing of any Killing Joke, despite my best efforts.

Ungrateful child!

Nah, not yet. She can roll around, but no crawling, despite earnest attempts. We were fruitlessly encouraging crawling in that picture.

Frankly, the purtyer she gets, the more reason to post. That's one cute kid. Ever thought of trying the baby model route for her, or would that be too much time/hassle?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 October 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Killing Joke should start making baby bath toys.

Believe me, I've been pestering Mike Coles at MALICIOUS DAMAGE to come up with some baby gear. Unfortunately, the best he's come up with is this:

http://www.studio-c.co.uk/maliciousdamage/graphics/mdshirt002.jpg

Suffice to say, while I've sworn eternal alleigance to Malicious Damage, this particular shirt will never enter this apartment.

Meanwhile, back on the farm....

Alex, she's laughing because your right nipple started lactating in that photo.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 11:43 (nineteen years ago)

ARRRRGGHHHH!!!!! Why is this stuff never simple? People have been giving birth every damn hour forCENTURIES!!

We had to check my wife into the hospital this afternoon. She'd started having some early contractions and some bleeding and had already started to dilate. It's about 11 pm, and I'm back from the hospital. Peg's still there (my Mom amazingly was around to look after Charlotte). The latest developments, unfortunately, are that they've put Peg on a combination of steroids and magneseum. The steroids are to buffer the baby's development (if we delivered this week, we'd be uncomfortably early) and the magneseum is designed to curtail the contractions she's been prematurely having. The good news is that the baby is fine (heart beat, weight, etc.). The not so great news is that the magneseum treatment takes a while -- they have her on it for 24 hours and then take her off of it to observe her for another 24 to make sure it did the trick and that the contractions have stopped. They're now saying that it's highly unlikely that they're going to let her out of the hospital before Monday (and even went so far as to suggest that they might want to keep her there until it's time to properly deliver). This, of course, makes life hugely difficult to plan (what with Charlotte needing to be looked after).

WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 25 February 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

Your post: :(

The good news is that the baby is fine (heart beat, weight, etc.)

This is very important and the best news.

Oh, I missed the original news, congratulations Alex! (I evidently read all the wrong threads these days)

Remember you had all these worries last time and look how Charlotte turned out! Peg is in the right place and in safe hands and you have family and friends to rally round with Charlotte and whathaveyou. Fingers crossed for you, that it'll all be fine.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 25 February 2006 10:52 (nineteen years ago)

DUDE

We were doing the same thing last October for our third babe. Everything turned out okay for us, but I was fucking frightened. And pissed from the inconvenience.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 26 February 2006 04:30 (nineteen years ago)

I'm happy to report that at 4:13 pm today -- Friday March 10, 2006 -- our little boy announced his presence to the world with a diminutive barbaric yawp, weighing in at six pounds and three ounces. Much like his sister Charlotte, this little person decided to get a wee jump on things, arriving exactly a month before initially expected. Peggy and the baby are both resting back at the hospital. I'm now back home with Charlotte -- currently asleep and blissfully oblivious to the fact that tomorrow her world changes forever.

Oh, and we have decided to name the little guy Oliver.

Congratulations, Alex. I just hung out with a buddy of mine whose parental development has followed yours, roughly (daughter + 2 years = son) and he was a) proud of having a son and b) worried about having TWO kids when he still considers himself a kid.

The best of all wishes, and post pictures as soon as possible.
