Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Acid hydrangea? And what do you have too?

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:29 (twenty-one years ago)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you have a macro lense, some of those close up pictures are really sharp?

mms (mms), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The camera does have a macro mode, yeah.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I have the monitor too.

Hydrangeas are pink in acid soil and blue in alkaline soil.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow - there are pink & blue ones in the same patch there! I haf a picture, hang on.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That library shot looks like a Scottish indie album cover!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 August 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

2megs a month and they warn you, 2.5megs and they cut off direct linking. Donate $5 and they remove limits and allow you to post pics up to 500k! My blogs been getting loads of hits because of the Embrace stuff I'm doing at the moment, plus I did post rather a lot of links here.

STEVEM HURRY UP AND TAKE PIX SO I CAN PWN U!

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 August 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

They're all smashing, Nick. I think I've taken about 450 pix in the first week of owning my Ixus i. It's ridiculous. I was always planning to add another HD to the PC to house all the audio dicking-about but it's looking like it's the dozens of gorgeous 1.5MB Large/Superfine Macro shots that will wipe me out first.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 20 August 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i've taken some, but they are shit!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 20 August 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i cannot hold a camera still is the problem. that one was taken with the setting on 'Superfine' at 640x480. the definition on the windows seems good enough but hmmmm.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 20 August 2004 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

also at the mo the flash seems completely bobbins but i am crap with cameras i confess

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 20 August 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you need to turn the AIAF off for those kind of shots, Steve - the Canon 'cleverly' picks out the contrast of the window frame and focuses on that. You want to just use single-frame centred auto-focus.

Or something.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 20 August 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah the point of focus seems the issue here.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 August 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

> the definition on the windows seems good enough but hmmmm.

that's just a focus thing though (isn't it?). the autofocus(?) seems to be choosing the window frame but you're actually trying to focus on the cars.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:26 (twenty-one years ago)

God that thing takes a beautiful picture.

No, the photographer takes a beautiful picture with that thing!

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:35 (twenty-one years ago)

A fast car does not drive itself. Schumacher is not a passenger. I dunno, I get weird when people kind of dismiss photography as being down to the camera and not the photographer, probably because I know a couple of professional photographers and my dad takes photos for some train website and such. You have to be able to see a picture first in order to take it.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(I wasn't suggesting that you don't have the eye for a great image, Nick. Just that SteveM seems to be struggling for the picturesque. Think MACRO, Steve - it's all about the inside of that milk carton in the gutter or the grubby outer edge of the mouse mat).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree - great pictures, Nick.

xp

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's all about odd angles, lines and perspective, and yes, MACRO.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

if i had more time...

i doubt i can get pics as good as Nick's tho, not cos of the camera but entirely cos of my impatience and lack of expertise.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Carry it round all the time, and look for odd things, that's what I do. There's got to be a million different things to photograph every day in London, buildings and sculptures and drain pipes and kerbs and shoes and piles of rubbish and stuff.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Mucho macro is kind of a cheap way to make a big impact. Having said that, GREBT pictures Nick. That dewy spiderweb one is teh hott shiznitt.

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 26 August 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha! I'm just pumping everything straight into photobucket, and it's tranforming them all to round about 500k. I don't bother with software - I run XP at work and home and just load 'em down the USB into that. Easy, innit.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 26 August 2004 07:03 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad once had a photo on display in quite a large branch of Boots.

I would like to see Steady Mike's pictures of Maryon Park Zoo. I bet you can see individual goat's arse hairs.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Mine was about £230 from amazon.co.uk.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Extra memory and batteries and case probably takes it to £280 though.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 11:04 (twenty-one years ago)

the Ixus 500 can be had for around £270 tho extra battery and bigger mem card def recommended.

Porkpie (porkpie), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it true that the Ixus 430 and 500 use Compact Flash? My Ixus i uses SD (perhaps that's just a physical size decision by Canon).

In case that snags Ken's interest, the Ixus i is available for about £140-150, lacks an optical zoom, has a slighty lower-res LCD screen than Nick'n'Steve's beauties, a smaller range of Macro, is autofocus only and pegs out at 4Mpix (short of SteveM's 5.3Mpix). Zoom inadequacy apart, I reckon it's capable of images as good as any of these. Though perhaps nothing as strangely chilling as Lixi's hair and the floodlights. That was a bit 70s kids TV thriller meets 00s Japanese psychodrama and I will not sleep easy tonight.

i think i'll keep using mine now since i only use it to take pictures of drunken people in a bar nowadays it seems! and then when i save up a bit of money then it'll be pwning time.

(p.s. that halloween orange is getting a bit rotty now.. if i had an ixus it would probably pick up all the vivid colours!! it's kinda pretty in its black and orange goodness)

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 2 September 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The aftershow went on till nearly 2am and the tour manager stole my bag, leaving me in Kensington with nothing but my camera and £2 in change and a hotel floor to sleep on, necessitating a jaunt to Riverside Studios in Hammersmith to find the tourbus and get my bag back. Hence I sadly missed the planned Londinium Eeyore Photo Shoot Off. Plus I was hideously hungover (tha bar at the aftershow was free! woohoo!), and going on the Eeyore would not have been sensible (as I gather was the case with stevem too).

But anyway, I did at least take a few pictures at the gig which came out quite well...

The battery in Steve's camera ran out just before we went into the Dreamspace installation on Saturday, which is a shame as there were endless great photo opportunities in there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 6 September 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

whole new bunch here, mostly of the walk I took from the London Eye/Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately some shots suffer from bad focus and the fact I took them on Normal setting as opposed to Fine/Superfine so some not as well defined. The heathaze was a problem as well or maybe I just didn't apply the right settings. Some came out great tho.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe you need a steady hand for the nightshots because they have a longer exposure? (my camera does that)

Tripod.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yup.. or somewhere to put the camera on at least.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

don't bother taking photos at night when drunk may be the solution. the one from London Bridge at night I posted last week came out fine after all.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 6 September 2004 13:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i found the nightshot thing really good actually for like motion shots... do your cameras support like a manual prolonged exposure? so you can take those crazy "traffic" night shots?

loads of mine are perfectly steady anyway - i don't want to gain an undeserved reputation, or to be known in the amateur photography world as Shakin' Stevem

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I'm officially astonished that the bee shot wasn't taken with a tripod. Are you on beta blockers like the late Bill Werbenuik?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Nick those are fantastic - what settings are you using? do you have a Superfine setting? i haven't taken many at all at highest res/highest quality but i wish i had for the last batch of London ones. the Night flash setting seems unuseable unless you set the camera on a still flat surface because of the. every pic i have taken so far with the night flash has been blurry as fuck except the one where i positioned the camera on the railing of London Bridge itself (tho i still think booze was a factor in that).

I pwned you with the London Eye pics tho right? right

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The London Eye pics were, y'know, alright. :o)

I take everything at Superfine maximum size - I have a 256mb memory card, which can get about 150-180 pics at that resolution on it. I've still not read the manual, just fiddled about with various settings. Most of them are literally just point&shoot - I take HUNDREDS and only the very best end up here. Although I only take one or two shots of each individual thing.

I'm about to buy one or the other, but was wondering if the 500 was worth the extra price? Is the only thing it's got going for it the extra megapixels? Or is it only worth buying over the 430 because it's a nice round number and my head hurts when I think of other numbers that are not that round?

Photographic geniusness factored in already son. So would you say there's no real benefit to getting a 500 over a 430, apart from the extra "megapixel"?

(Xpost)

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

amateur question: a lot more of my pics lately have this dirty/faded look to them - is this likely to be a lens cleanliness issue or just that the photos are not taken in good enough light?

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's just say that I'm very happy with mine.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 14 October 2004 13:24 (twenty-one years ago)

So Stevem's 500 is dirty and grainy, while Nick's 430 has a very happy owner. Is that what we're saying?

Huey (Huey), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh but i think that's just cos i'm crap

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:36 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem, it's called 'autumn'

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 14 October 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
so nick, which camera do you actually have?

you see, i'm about to buy my first ever digital camera (helloooo, future-world!), and i've narrowed things down to the canons, but i can't decide between the ixus 40, 430, 50 or even that I5 one that comes in the different colours. size matters, you see - i want one of the little ones that fits in the altoids tin (i think the ixus 40 is the thinnest)

it's either these or a pentax optio s5i...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the 40 the other day and it is TINY. Mine is the 430.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

gotcha. i want the thin one. the i5 is tiny too.
i want one that is thin, has optical zoom (some of the ixus ones don't) a large screen (the 40 is 2") and a video out. and none of them have it all...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure I'd want one any thinner than mine. I'm scared enough of dropping it as it is. It fits in a pocket very nicely, and goes everywhere in a case in my bag.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, the Pleasure of Blackpool.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey Nick, does that last one say "apples in stereo"?! Corny indie fuq!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT? Where? I've never even TOUCHED an Apples In Stereo record?!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i think it says 'STAPLES' and a bunch of other stuff (?)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes yes that's it! It's the fluorescent light for Staples Office Superstore! I am not into Elephany 6!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Underneath it says B&Q!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oh right! i thought she meant it looked like an apples in stereos album cover.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought it was more like
http://bestcovers.tgnetwk.com/audio/pj_harvey_stories_from_the_city_stories_from_the_sea_back.jpg

except on second inspection it wasn't!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No, mine was a good photo.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

but with no track listing

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I posted a whole bunch of pictures on this thread:

When can we have another Chicago thread?

If I may enter the competition, plz.

Kenan (kenan), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

oh shit these are supposed to go to the chicago thread!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Genius? #11 and #60 from above are great but motion blur probably beats gratuitous macro as the easiest thing with which to get a "Cor!" response. I wanna see some pictures of human beings.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Human beings? Right. That's a new task.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i've got a good one of stevem and lixi that i'm gonna post when i get home.

Wow, great!

StanM (StanM), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 09:43 (twenty years ago)

what's the difference between ixus 500 and ixus 50? are they the same thing?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

i think so but the 50 is much slimmer.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

ooh i see.

i might be getting a 750 soon :) :) :) :)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 10:40 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, that's really beautiful.

get 1x new thread for general photos taken by ILXers i reckon

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 26 June 2006 17:33 (nineteen years ago)

well.. the picture is gigantic, and is taken by an IXUS! (you're just jealous cos i am pwn1ng!)

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

not at all. just think it would be better if there was a new thread for general ILX photography. i hate the massive clunky title of this one blighting the New Answers landscape also.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 11:54 (nineteen years ago)
