OK, I didn't want to derail this thread anymore, so I thought I'd start a new one. Anyway, it's my party and I'll cry if I want to. Here's the scoop:

Thursday September 16th, 8pm - 2am
Living, 443 Coldharbour Lane - right in the heart of Brixton.
A map is here.
The bar's website is here.
I've got the upstairs room booked with our own bar, loos & a proper DJ booth/soundsystem. It's a nice chilled out place.

Come one, come all.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Hurrah! They do v.nice cocktails there.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Larvely... I'm coming to this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I will probably DJ for a bit, reprazenting the illustrious Global Pop Conspiracy soundsystem UK massive. However I could probably use a hand, so if anyone else can pitch in behind the decks, that would be cool.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 2 September 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it in the nasty part of Coldharbour Lane, or in the Fuck I'm Not Setting A Foot Within Half A Mile part of Coldharbour Lane?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey can someone add this to the ILX calendar? I'm not allowed, apparently.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Just the nasty part, Mark. It's basically at the top end, just past the Ritzy cinema and some Satay place. Fear not, it's not that bad. Brixton has been getting progressively yuppier over the last few years anyway...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the new Putney!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to Alix and Starry's Halloween party about 4 years ago and it involved walking down Coldharbour Lane. NEVER AGAIN.

(I know the top end's okay, assuming by okay you mean full of dealers and fights and overpriced booze)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to walk from Brixton to Camberwell a fair bit back in the day and it was never as bad as some people made it out to be.

Porkpie (porkpie), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it in the nasty part of Coldharbour Lane, or in the Fuck I'm Not Setting A Foot Within Half A Mile part of Coldharbour Lane?
-- Markelby (boyincorduro...), September 2nd, 2004 3:02 PM. (later)

has the Barry once feared by all suffering the same fate as Dirty Den of Eastenders?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

-has +is

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

like i would have thought barry would be the last person to be scared by a rough neighbourhood.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Roehampton has made him soft.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've done the long walk down all of Coldharbour lane and it can be dodgy, but the top part by Brixton Hill is fine. Honestly Mark you sound like my mum there - if a naive wimpy Canadian like me can find Brixton tame, you've gotta know that it's OK.

I've always found Brixton-fear to be silly. Sure, you can find trouble in parts of Brixton if you go lookin' for it, but the same can be said of pretty much anywhere in London.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Rough? Pishaw.

Crime-busting Marianna, Thursday, 2 September 2004 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Rob, the top end is sleazy overpriced with a threatening underbelly but isn't actually dangerous. More than a couple of hundred yards down and you're in fairly genuine danger of being mugged or whatever.

I used to work in Brixton, and had a gf who lived there for like three years. I don't fear it (with the exception of the above) but I don't like it much either. I just don't equate "edgy" or even "faux-edgy" with "somewhere I'd want to live".

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

so what you're saying is.....you're not coming? i don't get

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark, you don't have to live there, you just have to go into a bar there. I'm sure we'll survive.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 2 September 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Holy shite, a FAP i can get to on just one bus! Except that I may well be packing for the grand sallying forth unto Yorkshire that evening. We's'll see.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 2 September 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh for fuck's sake, I'm just saying Coldharbour Lane is a shitty place, alright? I go to shitty places all the time. I'm sorry to harsh everyone's buzz.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 2 September 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh dear lord, not only do we have to deal with South London Hate, but different parts of South London hating on one another.

I will attend, since it's within stumbling distance of my Manor. It's an alright sort of place, I've been there before, no more or no less offensive than any other trendy young watering hole, etc. etc.

And Coldharbour Lane isn't *that* rough any more. I know that it used to be mugging territory, but it's been cleaned up a lot in the past few years - my ex boyfriend lives on the "Baaaaaaad" estate and it's not nearly as rough as it's cracked up to be.

You know, the one where that twat on the telly was wandering around, trying to get robbed, and people kept coming up to him and helpfully warning him "you want to put that mobile away, mate, or someone's going to take it off you" in a very friendly, helpful, neighbourly sort of way.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:16 (twenty years ago)

OK OK, less Brixton debate, more love...

You all have my personal guarantee that you will see me so drunk that I may dance on the ceiling. Or at least try to. And beware my DJ set - I have been known to play things like ZZ Top and OMD back-to-back...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Yes, yes, love, love, etc. etc. A CANADIAN DOES NOT MAKE LOVE, A CANADIAN *IS* LOVE!!!

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:50 (twenty years ago)

On the Simpsons last night (one I've never seen, oddly), they all sang an abridged version of "O Canada", and formed a human-chain maple leaf. Nearly brought a tear to my eye.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 September 2004 07:52 (twenty years ago)

And beware my DJ set - I have been known to play things like ZZ Top and OMD back-to-back...

Rob, you've been to Club FT, you know that isn't exactly going to put anyone off.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Please tell me you did that at 90s Canadian raves as well.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:03 (twenty years ago)

Nope. Back then I was all about stupid overpriced german or belgian white label trance and/or detroit techno. Basically if it had a Roland 303 in it, I would play it. I wouldn't go near a record with guitars in it until I had my "Raves are stupid. I quit!" epiphony. Then it was back to my AC/DC records for a little re-education...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:16 (twenty years ago)

The weirdest thing I played at one big rave was when I ended a set with a Cranes song remixed by that 'Foetus' guy JG Thirwell. It was quite pretty, and the kids loved it. But judging by the amount of drugs going around the Toronto scene at the time, I could have played a fucking White Zombie record and they wouldn't have noticed...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:29 (twenty years ago)

did you ever get any E's with a maple leaf on them?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:35 (twenty years ago)

On Saturday night I heard You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC plonked right in the middle of an acid/electro set. It was great.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

I think I might have punched the air in a mildly silly way.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 3 September 2004 08:41 (twenty years ago)

bump! just for matt's last post if nothing else ;)

hello, i think i might come down for this (although i'll be off for the last tube i'd imagine), as i have the friday off, hurrah.

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:28 (twenty years ago)

The realisation that that air punch made me look not like a RAWK GOD but actually like a saucer-eyed Tim Henman has put me off dancing ever again.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:30 (twenty years ago)

Went to this bar on Saturday. Worst! Margarita! Ever!

However, this will not dissuade me from attending the birthday festivities.

Danger Whore, over and out (kate), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:30 (twenty years ago)

After being a grumpypants last week I really wanted to go, but as it's the day before I have to leave the house at 4.30am to pick up my beloved, I'm going to have to miss it :(

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:49 (twenty years ago)

Markelby, stop up all night.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Awww sorry you can't make it Mark. I'll play an old Ride song in your honour!

I hope you can all make it out - I'm knackered from my trip to Stockholm right now but I'm pretty damn excited about Thursday.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 08:58 (twenty years ago)

Peter, I have a long list of house-tidying stuff I need to do too - it was even longer but I had a very productive weekend (I now have a sparkling clean shower curtain, for example, and my stairs are muck-free). Also I'm an old cunt and couldn't possibly stay up all night :(

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:01 (twenty years ago)

Rob, would you like cake or is this place too cool for confectionery?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:02 (twenty years ago)

dude, if it's too cool for cake, i aint coming ;)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:17 (twenty years ago)

They told me I am free to bring in food, etc - they are quite laid-back there. And I'm not going to make ANY effort to sway you from bringing said cake ;)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:25 (twenty years ago)

We have been cleaning too. Quite astounding, what a difference it makes.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Monday, 13 September 2004 11:11 (twenty years ago)

ever since the "burgled" yellow pages advert man downstairs moved away i've lost motivation to clean my house. i should pick up the habit again soon.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 11:24 (twenty years ago)

quick question! what is the night bus route that goes from brixton to roughly islington? i hopped onto the bus to liverpool street the other night from brixton and got hopelessly lost. i thought the N43 went there but it didn't - but maybe it goes through Moorgate instead (i'm suspecting the retarded inability to find moorgate from liverpool st could have been my downfall)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I will come along, assuming I've managed to get out of the house that day. A better chance if I go straight from work - are there any plans to meet before 8 somewhere?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 13 September 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I hope to see you there, Martin.
Ken, I don't know about direct bus routes - there may have to be a change in Waterloo or Trafalgar (?)
I will probably be having dinner with Toronto friends who are in town, then going to Living, so I dunno about any pre-Brixton meet-ups yet...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:01 (twenty years ago)

There's the N59 to Euston, and I know that you can get a bus to Islingtonish from there...

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to take advantage of the first Sarf London FAP in months and head home first. Then I will get a bus to a FAP for the first time ever!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago)

No direct night bus route from Brixton to Islington as such, but the quickest way is to take the N133 to Liverpool Street and then change for a 214, which is a 24-hour service and goes directly through Islington.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Monday, 13 September 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago)

I will actually just WALK home!!! Astonishing!!!!

(OK, I may actually give up about halfway up Brixton Hill, but I will at least try. I did it the other night, falling down plastered.)

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:09 (twenty years ago)

ken, i was wondering the same thing the other night. just looking at the nightbus map from brixton (http://www.tfl.gov.uk/buses/spiders/pdf/brixton-night.pdf) and there's nothing direct. but the N35 goes to TCR, and the N2 and N3 go to piccadilly circus, so transfer there?

i see no N59 on the map. although maybe it's one of those not-night busses that runs 24 hours?

xpost

colette (a2lette), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:13 (twenty years ago)

aha! TCR and picadilly circus would do it! i must have been blind that other night at HDIF (i blame the booze)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago)

But the 35 is the MAD BUS!!! Or is that the 45? Can't remember. But one of them takes the MADDEST ROUTE EVER - don't take it back from Brixton, you will never get back!

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago)

i've just looked on the map... N2 N3 or N159 seem like good bets for me! (to trafalgar sq and then N29 to outside my house woot!)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

and i can have the option to stroll to bar italia for a cappuccino and custard tart

ken c (ken c), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:35 (twenty years ago)

The 45 goes through camberwell, up the walworth rd, then at elephant and castle goes towards blackfriars. The 35 goes straight up past oval to Elephant and castle, and so is much quicker for that part of the journey than the 45.

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:40 (twenty years ago)

It's the 45 I'm thinking of, then, oh no, mad bus, oh no.

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:43 (twenty years ago)

She's right about the 45 being the mad bus, even if only because whenever it comes through Camberwell of a late evening it invariably has to stop for 15 minutes because there's a wino sleeping in the middle of Denmark Hill and the driver has to summon the police to get him moved (that is of course assuming that said wino is actually alive, which is by no means always the case).

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Monday, 13 September 2004 13:52 (twenty years ago)

http://www.collectmad.com/collectibles/madbus2.jpg

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago)

sigh, the days I could get a bus all the way into work... The 45 took me closer to work, but the 59 didn't go via camberwell so was the much more sensible option. ( I used to live just off Brixton Hill, just before the south circular when you're going towards streatham, hence my knowledge of brixton buses)

Vicky (Vicky), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago)

ha, that bus is great! my dad has a small collection of alfred e newman (neuman? i have no idea) stuff at the bike shop, sure he'd love that!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 13 September 2004 13:58 (twenty years ago)

OHMIGOD, A GENUINE MAD BUS!!! EXCELLENT!

Danger Whore (kate), Monday, 13 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

So...is anyone else milling around in the centre of town after work and before this? I think I should buy the really nice slouch boots I saw at the weekend, and maybe eat some stomach-lining filth.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:36 (twenty years ago)

I think I should buy the really nice slouch boots I saw at the weekend

but REMEMBER YOU'LL BE WALKING THROUGH TREACHEROUS MUGGERS PARADISE BRIXTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Hoho, indeed. Anyway, large bag with substantial boot box in it = ideal mugger-whacking object. Although I will then presumably get shot.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:40 (twenty years ago)

I'll quite possibly be about, unless I be a South London ponce and go home first (but I'd hate to break tradition)!

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:50 (twenty years ago)

i'd so rather go shoe shopping with you, liz!

i'm trying to think of what i can wear that's nearly as dressy/professional as a suit, but less embarrassing to wear when i go straight to a birthday party. hmm.

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Well, do you want to tell me if the boots look OK or not?

xpost to Starry but all are of course welcome to shoe shopping fundango. Colette - wear smart trousers and take a sexy evening top that folds up small which you can change into.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:53 (twenty years ago)

I shall see how I feel on the day, I say I say.

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 11:54 (twenty years ago)

If I'm at work, I'll have time after, but I'm not sure that shoe shopping, even with Liz and maybe Sarah, is my idea of fun. I will pop into a comic shop and a music one, but will be free and keen on company after 5.30 or 6.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Will there be a Scrabble set available on the night? I do enjoy a good game of Scrabble!

Karen McDonald, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Are you.... mocking... me?!!

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:17 (twenty years ago)

i like scrabble too.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I will attend this FAP in spirit (and pickled in spirits).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

You will be a attending as a fapparition?

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I love your neologist ways.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Yay Ned!

Scrabble would be great. I wish I had my old board games here too. I had 'Happy Days', 'The Hardy Boys', 'Star Wars Escape from Death Star', 'CHiPs', and also 'Battleship'. I used to bust them out at our indiedisco night, and they went down a treat. Which says a lot about our DJ skillz, I suppose.

Twister On Teh Dancefloor

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago)

Don't tempt me with Scrabble. Seriously, dude.

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't get why Markelby gets a Ride song in his honour, when I am the only person here that goes on about Ride, and I never get a Ride song in my honour, if I have any.

But the point isn't that I want one, just that I'm surprised at the notion that Markelby would want one.

re. Brixton I probably agree with Markelby, really.

the ridefox, Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

(mark played a ride song when he DJed at ClubFT. i think it was before you turned up, on that particular night)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:10 (twenty years ago)

'Chelsea Girl' specifically. It made me squeal with Ride-fanboy glee. I might have kissed him had he played 'Like A Daydream' instead. And I'm sure I've gone on about Ride on ILM at some point.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Twister On Teh Dancefloor

never try to play twister with the spots the disco ball makes on the dance floor. they move, and you will fall. unfortunately, i speak from experience.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:07 (twenty years ago)

first you get nudged by Britney at a wedding, and now this!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:08 (twenty years ago)

i'm just trying to look out for you.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago)

never try to play twister with the spots the disco ball makes on the dance floor. they move, and you will fall. unfortunately, i speak from experience.

however, playing DDR with the disco ball lights = classic!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Unfortunately, just as the FAPwagon rolls into South London Town... I'm moving up to Leeds at the weekend. Days before will be riddled with packing and stuff, so I'm out, unfortunately, and won't be back in till Xmas hols at th'earliest. See you then tho.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago)

William, I woke up in Peckham bus garage three hours before I was due to be at university for the first time. Surely you can pop along for a bit so we can give you a proper sendoff?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago)

'fraid not - given method I use for getting home from work (i.e. all-bus-all-the-time) I'm regularly getting in about eight now, and need to be in bed by around eleven. I also have a lot of stuff to pack and we're setting off at stupid o'clock on Saturday morning... oh, here sits a bloody mess, indeed. I can't remember the rest of that particular song, but Skunk Anansie had that line right enough.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Have fun in Leeds, William, if such is possible. We'll miss you at FAPs.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 19:29 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, and here I was going on on this thread about how safe and fine Brixton and Coldharbour Lane was, but I was drinking there at the weekend with my mate Anton, and as we're walking back towards the tube, suddenly there's this huge altercation, two police go after this kid, chase him, and pin him down, and then this mob of kids go after the police, jump on them, and start whacking them with their hats.

Poor Anton was just looking at this like "OMG, WTF? I have lived in NYC all my life, and I've *NEVER* seen anyone hit a cop!" and I'm all "Well, in NYC, the cops have guns, if you whacked one, even with a hat you would get SHOT!"

But then, like, two vans full of polices pulled up and suddenly there's dozens of polices running around and the kids are scattering. Anton just had this expression of "I'm going back to NYC, I do believe I've had enough!" so I walked him to the tube, just laughing and saying "welcome to South London".

By the time I walked back towards Streatham, about ten minutes later, it was all over, like nothing had happened. Crazy.

What am I going to do until 8? Crikey, maybe I can see if Ems wants to grab supper or a drink or something.

No more William Bloody Swygart? What's the point of going to FAPs, then? ::sulks:: Don't leave us. How dare you go and get a life and all!

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 07:24 (twenty years ago)

way to sell brixton, kate!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:19 (twenty years ago)

What are you talking about? Brixton is GRATE!!! You can hop on cops and whack them with your trucker hats! You could never get away with that crap in Hoxton! I love it!

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:21 (twenty years ago)

They weren't really beating the police with TRUCKER HATS were they? If the legacy of Brian Paddock is that cops are being attacked with bits of insubstantial fabric then maybe the Daily Mail was right all along.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:23 (twenty years ago)

hey, in the UK the police get whacked with hats, so YOU DON'T HAVE TO!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:24 (twenty years ago)

F#ck whacking a hat.

Damn, we're losing El Sporto Commentator to university? A NORTHERN university. At least Cis is only going to Oxford. Tchah, these young people, it wouldn't have happened back in my dat etc.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:25 (twenty years ago)

I would have said it was a baseball cap, rather than a trucker hat, but I can't really tell the difference.

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:25 (twenty years ago)

What are you talking about? Brixton is GRATE!!! You can hop on cops and whack them with your trucker hats! You could never get away with that crap in Hoxton! I love it!

if you have a big enough gang you can get away with it anywhere :) (except maybe inside an actual police station with loads of officers present - unless you have a really really big gang)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Cuh. If this had been NYC they'd have been shot for brandishing a baseball cap as an offensive weapon.

God 'elp us if there's a war.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:28 (twenty years ago)

"New York City Caps... New York City Caps..."

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:29 (twenty years ago)

now i know why all the scallies wear caps. it's a LEATHAL WEAPON!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:30 (twenty years ago)

that's why they say they'll bust a cap in yo ass, obviously

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:31 (twenty years ago)

did you know Mel Gibson was into S+M?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:32 (twenty years ago)

so we're all wearing caps to rob's birthday party?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah! he had a main role in LEATHER WEAPON 4!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:32 (twenty years ago)

I will wear my PIRATE HAT!!! ARRRRRRRR!!!

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:33 (twenty years ago)

i'm totally wearing my cap

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:34 (twenty years ago)

i can wear my 'sloan-wore-it-and-it's-all-over-in-brooklyn' hat...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:35 (twenty years ago)

Then we have to form an orderly gang and roam around whacking cops upside the head with said caps.

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:36 (twenty years ago)

There was a letter in the Daily Mail the other day which commented that it was a pity that the Russian school hostage-takers hadn't come to Brixton instead of Beslam as they would have done some good in Brixton.

What was I doing reading the Daily Mail? Someone had left it on the bus. Know your enemy innit.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

Holy shit. They really are the scum of the earth.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:43 (twenty years ago)

my flatmate regularly buys daily express and mail on sunday even though he's like labour and stuff. it's fun to read (except the mail has really crap non-punny headlines).

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:49 (twenty years ago)

I have actually started to love Brixton in a weird sort of way. But only cause I don't actually have to live there.

We're playing a gig in Brixton next month. Do you think I'll get a beatdown if I start my own thread inviting people to it? Sigh.

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:54 (twenty years ago)

That is surely a lie about the Daily Mail letter.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:56 (twenty years ago)

why wouldn't you start a thread about your gig? i've seen other people's shows listed...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:57 (twenty years ago)

(Because I used to get the cap beaten out of me for doing it in the past... then again, I think it might have just been 4000 alternate identities of certain former regulars, who knows, I'm scarred for life, I tell you, scarred for life!)

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 08:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh! I've been to this place. I drank smirnoff ices then fell over. Oh happy days. I think I will try to come along after I finish work. That'll be at 11pm then. We'll see.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:34 (twenty years ago)

do you need a support band kate?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:46 (twenty years ago)

I think we're playing with a bunch of Canadian bands.

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:47 (twenty years ago)

boards of canada?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:48 (twenty years ago)

is your band called Danger Whore?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:48 (twenty years ago)

US Maple?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:49 (twenty years ago)

No, not Boards of Canada, and no, we're not called Danger Whore (that's a lyric from a song that has since been changed, and crikey, maybe I should start another thread about this, if only to stop hijacking Rob's thread) and I AM NOT A CANADIAN!!! ARGH!!!

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:49 (twenty years ago)

kate, will your band be playing ooout and aboot?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:51 (twenty years ago)

I've started another thread about it, so I don't have to derail Rob's nice thread any more...

Will I Get A Beatdown If I Start A Thread About The Kissing TIme?

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:55 (twenty years ago)

You know - after all this talk - if I don't get to see some FIGHTS on Thursday I'm going to be seriously disappointed.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 09:58 (twenty years ago)

i'll see what i can do...i'll already be surly, so it wouldn't be unheard of. just bring a slimy guy that keeps touching my friends, and there'll be some kind of excitement!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:00 (twenty years ago)

Colette and I can have a FITE to see who's scarier when they're drunk and surly!

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:01 (twenty years ago)

Crime Bustin' Marianna on the loose on the mean streets of SW2!!

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:05 (twenty years ago)

Someone bring a camcorder please.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:10 (twenty years ago)

Colette and I can have a FITE to see who's scarier when they're drunk and surly!

ha, we've talked about that before, but i don't think we've ever done it, have we?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Well, it could have happened at How Does It Feel, when you started hitting on my gay boyfriend, but then Gareth distracted me with beer. Ah well, next time.

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:13 (twenty years ago)

i only asked him if he knew who the song was by. that doesn't count as 'hitting on' these days, does it?

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:16 (twenty years ago)

didn't you know asking gay guys 'what song is this' is CODE

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:18 (twenty years ago)

Crime Bustin' Marianna on the loose on the mean streets of SW2!!

ROWR YEAH! I'm gonna beat those buffies down!

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:19 (twenty years ago)

dang, dude. i could have chatted up SO MANY PEOPLE over the years, if i'd only learned the blasted code!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:19 (twenty years ago)

It's that weird language that gay boys in Soho speak... what's that called again? I forget...

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Polari innit?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:22 (twenty years ago)

no it isn't

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:23 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:24 (twenty years ago)

anal intercourse is no laughing matter

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:25 (twenty years ago)

No, it's a slashing matter.

Danger Whore (kate), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:25 (twenty years ago)

Rob, I'm so sorry, but I won't be able to make this. I;ve already managed to double book myself (it seems to be a theme for me today). I hope you have a really great time.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Hang on, let me get this quite clear: if I start touching all of Colette's sexy friends, Colette will wrestle with me?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:25 (twenty years ago)

I class myself as one of colette's sexy friends.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 22:31 (twenty years ago)

So, see you all tonight then?

I am now 34 years old. Hooray!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Cheeers!

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:15 (twenty years ago)

happy birthday, rob!

(martin, stop perving on jim.)

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:18 (twenty years ago)

Happy birthday Rob - see you this evening!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Happy Birthday dude! I hope you've got the fixings for a large jug of Bloody Caesars.

(There is Nutella/walnut cake with white chocolate icing in my work fridge right now)

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:37 (twenty years ago)

HBR! I'll be along too but have no cake!! How about some soaked chickpeas? Nope? Ah well :)

Starry (hello chickens), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:43 (twenty years ago)

Happy birthday to the other Rob B!

robster (robster), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:45 (twenty years ago)

mumblemumble i think i'm going to just go home like the big gurl i am, sorry like rob mumblemumble...

i am feeling snotty and bad and i have to go to an effing wedding in the effing lake district this weekend. why can't everyone get married within an hour of london???

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:50 (twenty years ago)

There is Nutella/walnut cake with white chocolate icing in my work fridge right now

OMG. how much trouble will i get if i bunk off the once-quarterly evening meeting so i get there in time for cake?

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Thanks y'all!
That sounds like some fancy cake you got there.
I cannot make Bloody Caesars because apparently there is some weirdo UK import law around liquids in plastic bottles, which is how Mott's Clamato is shipped. The damn Canada store won't be getting it any more as a result. Damn.

Steve we'll miss you tonight! I was going to play you some Ocean Colour Scene because I know you love them so much (ok, I wasn't really)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:58 (twenty years ago)

NOTE TO ALL:

there probably won't be a bouncer/door person tonight unless they get really busy later. if they do have one at the front, just give them my name or 'the canadian guy's birthday party' or whatever.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:06 (twenty years ago)

rob, are you playing the cha cha slide tonight? i know how much you love it...

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:13 (twenty years ago)

HBR!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:16 (twenty years ago)

THERE WILL BE NO CHA CHA

but i have a special mash-up track that will rock the party, baby.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:39 (twenty years ago)

uh oh...

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 10:48 (twenty years ago)

shonky is not a real word

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago)

(it still hurts)

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Hello, just noticed this on the Living website:

Finally do not forget to take advantage of our happy hour from 5.30-7.30pm where there is 2 for 1 on all cocktails, spirits and bottled beers!

Ahh, so I might go early and get a couple of girly drinks in. Mmmm happy Liz hour.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Is that when they all Liz up?

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 16 September 2004 11:48 (twenty years ago)

martin, stop perving on jim.

I perve on nearly everyone, Colette, you know that.

I don't think I'll be making it, though. I didn't get into work today (I think these tranquilisers are making me worse: nausea at night making it hard to sleep, then I feel tranquilised in the morning when I try to get up. I think I'll skip tonight's and see if it helps) and feel pretty rough. I'll come if I can, but if I don't make it: sorry, Rob.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:00 (twenty years ago)

not sure what time i'll get there as i'll be stoppin by Virgin OXford St on the way to buy 100 copies of 'Chewing Gum' but to those attending see you soon

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Hey Steve I've just reported you to the Official UK Chart Company for attempted chart hyping and law enforcement officers from the BPI will be battering down your door at six tomorrow morning so fak you've had it faka hahahah!

Nobody likes me. I don't care. Oh well! The sky is only space seen from the other side!

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:10 (twenty years ago)

BPI can't hold me down, as proven last year. oh wait...

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I dunno. You're pretty agreeable since you stopped being an almighty arsehole to everyone.

xpost

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago)

what don't i count anymore?

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago)

Children aren't angels.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Indeed. Is anyone else planning on getting there a bit early, or will I be the girl looking like a lone drunkard with BOGOF funny-coloured cocktails?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:22 (twenty years ago)

i would have liz but i need to go home and post an email first (stupid work network seems to have banned me from posting attachments bigger than 1Mb once and for all) i'll have a newcastle brown at home first i guess.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:49 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, i forgot they do happy hour there - not a bad deal.. i will be there a little early, but not much before 7:30

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago)

ken is such a mang

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago)

newcastle brown isn't for mancs

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:52 (twenty years ago)

alternatively, if anyone in central london can suggest a way of me sending this email without having to head home first please let me know! (i have the file on an SD ram with a USB card reader! all i need is somewhere with internet access and somewhere that accepts a USB device, or even a floppy disk come to think of it!)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago)

and lets me send an 1MB attachment to gmail.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago)

I fear I cannot make this due to lifestyle crisis (ie dissertation) but have a great party Rob and see you soon.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:12 (twenty years ago)

This is clearly the classic FAP bell curve where every attender gradually drops out until there's no one left on the night except Liz and her BOGOF fancy-coloured cocktails!

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:17 (twenty years ago)

I never said I was actually going.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but couldn't you pretend you did for the purposes of this spurious and frankly crap sociological experiment what I've just made up?

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:24 (twenty years ago)

it'd be really amusing if rob doesn't turn up

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:25 (twenty years ago)

There will be Real People there as well, won't there? Rob, if this includes any of your friends who I might or might not have met at the Barfly then please apologise for me before the event.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

ok i have to ask a really stupid question: donnie smith the whiz kid - who are you? i'm REALLY slow at picking up on these ILX name-changes...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:28 (twenty years ago)

there will be IRL friends of mine there - a motley mix of folks, i imagine...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago)

stronger, you might say

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:35 (twenty years ago)

my wasted affairs also sometimes stem from too much pride.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:40 (twenty years ago)

so, donnie - a bit of an enigma wrapped in a mystery, then?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Fmph. Liz Havisham, sitting alone getting BOGOF drunk. Until real people turn up.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm going home first!!!

Starry, no really, it is! (hello chickens), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

i'm trying to see if i can get this thing sorted liz.. maybe i can join you for early drinks afterall. 2 for 1 i'll match you drink for drink!!!

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

also it's worth noting that i went to bed at 6:30am this morning (and got up at 8) so there's a real possibility of me collapsing on the dancefloor later.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah!

oh, that was an xpost, I don't want Ken to collapse on the dancefloor. Good thing there will be a number of us on the northbound nightbus so you don't end up in Edmonton.

Starry did you find a GIM?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago)

you people keep an eye on me tonight, ok? i don't want to get so drunk that i wee myself or anything. as soon as i start hugging all of you it's time for me to have a water...

although after reading ken's posts maybe we should keep an eye on him...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:58 (twenty years ago)

we can hug each other later rob.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Are you still wearing the light summer suit? Wee stains could be bad news if so. I'm sure we can pull together to prevent that happening.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:59 (twenty years ago)

there will be no weeing on people. unless Markelly turns up.

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Thursday, 16 September 2004 13:59 (twenty years ago)

just to take the piss?

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 16 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I believe I have Liz-o, but I need photo ID to join and I don't have any today, curses! SOON THOUGH! I have my GIM GEAR all ready in the office, hurrah.

I should be there around Gareth'o'clock.

Ooh, if anyone's tubing down to Brixton (as I am), there's delays on the Victoria line, apparently.

"Until further notice". So hopefully fixed soon. But still, boo.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Thursday, 16 September 2004 15:54 (twenty years ago)

i know i'll make it. but i hate it.

will you play some rage when i get there?

(p.s. rob, are you stumbling home on these nightbusses? what were they again? i'm gonna write them on my hand. think it might be that kind of night)

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm afraid I won't be there - I feel too rotten, and the idea of delays on the journey just cements my decision. Sorry, Rob, but I'm sure you'll manage to have a great night without me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago)

Right, so I thought to myself "Actually, if they're not expecting me in till 8, I can get to Brixton fairly quick style, get a 196, they'll be none the wiser if I leave at around half seven."

And then I get to Living, and, er, they don't know if anything's happening upstairs. Hmm. Sat in internet cafe round corner 'considering my options', as it were.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:45 (twenty years ago)

OMG.

i'm too tired to tell the whole story now, but i got in a fight. with the bouncer. he called the cops. i won.

ha.

details tomorrow.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 00:28 (twenty years ago)

haha nice one colette what the hell happened? anyway i'm sauced. look forward to the story tomrorow..

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

was it as big of a scene as it felt like? i mean, a bouncer and two managers, plus a WHOLE POLICE VAN full of cops in bulletproof vests. ha. it was so weird.

my friend tave's friend matt is so cool. he was very helpful. hooray matt.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 00:46 (twenty years ago)

It was a HUGE scene! And we were watching it all unfold from an upstairs window, which just made it feel even more TV. Aw wow! Most perfect end to a party of all time - Cops, trauma, and (I want credit for this bit) Kim Wylde!

JimD (JimD), Friday, 17 September 2004 01:32 (twenty years ago)

Wylde? What am I thinking? Wilde, obviously. Ah, I'd drunk, it's late.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 17 September 2004 01:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm! Not I'd. But this just proves my point.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 17 September 2004 01:35 (twenty years ago)

did colette hit the cops with a hat?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh my god.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:15 (twenty years ago)

And here was me thinking this thread would be full of talk of ILX pole dancing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:18 (twenty years ago)

didn't the fight start with colette wanting to take a picture of someone pole dancing???

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:19 (twenty years ago)

I remember this Matt guy from university, weirdly enough. He was the last person I expected to see when I walked into a FAP.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:20 (twenty years ago)

The non-appearance of Martin and the prospect of having to deal with bouncers were enough to put me off going. Looks like I made the right decision (I went to see Hot Chip at the Borderline instead but they were rub).

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Friday, 17 September 2004 07:22 (twenty years ago)

there are bouncers at the Borderline too!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:23 (twenty years ago)

Moral: stick to proper pubs with proper names like the Knife and Gullet rather than risk having your legs broken by HMP Brixton escapees/rehab programme attenders outside poncey clubs with pretentious names like "Living."

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Friday, 17 September 2004 07:29 (twenty years ago)

Sorry for not making this. I am currently suffering from a weird strain of flu, the symptoms of which only seem to kick in after I've been at work for a couple of hours.

Ricardo (RickyT), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:37 (twenty years ago)

Man alive. My tongue feels like it's been scraped down lovingly with a rusty razorblade. Damn those cocktails.

Full story of bouncer FITE please Colette! It was quite exciting to watch from a distance.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 17 September 2004 07:48 (twenty years ago)

Yes come on, stories! I was sick and didn't make it, waaaah, Rob did you get my message of heartfelt apols? I listened to We Want Fun in your honour, if that counts for anything...

Starry (hello chickens), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:00 (twenty years ago)

Colette - fight - wtf? Hope you had a lubberly day Rob!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:11 (twenty years ago)

i've only made it back to work thorugh the most miraculous of happenings. I fell asleep on the night bus and suddenly woke up at the holloway road stop! (if i woke too early i'd have fallen asleep again)

and this morning after all the alarms had failed to wake me, I received a TXT at 9am from my FLATMATE of all people (asking if i FAGOT) and my job was saved.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:13 (twenty years ago)

omg i just remembered dry humping rob

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:13 (twenty years ago)

Ken, you are ridiculous. However, 4 hours of sleep is not enough.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:14 (twenty years ago)

a feel ok now again. going to have a mulligatawny to wake me up.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:17 (twenty years ago)

did rob actually get home? he looked a little disoriented

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh my god, curse you Rob Bolton, curse you Ken C, curse you Colette, curse you THREE PITCHERS of Long Island Iced Tea. I scraped myself in to work an hour late this morning. Decided to just be honest. "Sorry I'm late. I ended up DJing by accident last night."

MAN, WHERE DID YOU FIND THE KYM MILDE?!?!? Marianna hid that from me so I couldn't play it. Humph.

So what was all this about Colette getting in a fight with the bouncer? Maybe it's a good thing I left when I did. Argh.

It was freaking great, though. Sparkly toilet seats. Pole dancing DANCING WITH CAKE, which is the new done thing. Dancing to Iggy Pop with cake and unintentionally smearing white chocolate nutella all over yourself, oh yes, oh yes.

And come on you people, Big Audio Dynamite were not that bad. Seriously. THE HORSES!!! THE HORSES!!!! THE H-H-H-H-HORESES ARE ON THE TRACK!!!

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:21 (twenty years ago)

Whorses, even ;-).

suzy (suzy), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:25 (twenty years ago)

This sounds like the best night evah! Is anyone in jail? Hope you had a good one, Mr. Bolton.

robster (robster), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:28 (twenty years ago)

I am so going to have to surrender the "Hellraising ChiX0r" title to Colette after this. I haven't punched a bouncer in nearly two years!

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm imagining this beatdown frenzy took place to the soundtrack of Kids In America. Please tell me this is true.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:31 (twenty years ago)

i didn't see any bouncers, weird

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:31 (twenty years ago)

Please tell me this is true

Very close to true, yeah. Except we were inside with the music watching the scrap through the window. It was ace.

WHERE DID YOU FIND THE KYM MILDE?!?!?

Aha, I sniffed it out with my pop hunting skillz.

"scrap" = "heated discussion" by the way.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:38 (twenty years ago)

There was a bouncer downstairs. He was kind of rude as Ken C and I were going upstairs with a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea - I didn't actually realise he was a bouncer, I thought he was just a random asshole.

I can't believe I missed Kids In America AND a FITE!

Gonna take you to, gonna take you to, gonna take you... part TWO!!! (part two... part two... part two...) Get out of my head, bad rasta Mick Jones.

x-post... Man, I was looking for that CD. I played something off it earlier, handed it to Marianna to put back, and then it vanished. :-(

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Every party needs a copy of Don't Stop Me Now for precisely this eventuality.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago)

i enjoyed your DJ stint a lot Kate, great choices. let's just never speak of the Siziziziziziz again.

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I just wanted to lay that "Kate hates SS because she hates disco and hip hop and dance music!" fallacy to rest for now and ever more. So I'm glad. Just me, myself and I (whoaaa-ooooaaaa-ooooooaaa-ooooaaah).

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:42 (twenty years ago)

i realised also that when drunk i can perfectly recite the words to the rap bits of "insane in the brain". which freaked me out.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:43 (twenty years ago)

Bah what is all this modern "pole dancing" and "Kym Wylde" ye olde Kydds in AmeriKKKa's most wanted and bad rasta cake in Myck Jones' haiyre and fyghts with ye hyrsute bouncyrs? You sure you lot didn't go to Caesar's nightclub in Streatham High Road by mistake?

Donnye Smyth Ye Quyzze Kydde, Friday, 17 September 2004 08:47 (twenty years ago)

Caesar's has been closed! Haven't you been keeping up with the Streatham Guardian and the Lambeth Post?

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:48 (twenty years ago)

Incidentally, I wasn't going to admit this but before I left I flooded the gents upstairs due to not noticing the Out Of Order sign. And then promptly failed to tell any of the staff. Serves the fuckers right.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:50 (twenty years ago)

Dunno Kate, I keep up with the Hampstead and Highgate Gazette these days. WATERSTONES NOT OPEN AT 8 A.M. ON SUNDAYS "SOMETHING MUST BE DONE" SAYS TV'S MICHAEL PALIN etc.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Friday, 17 September 2004 08:52 (twenty years ago)

I always wanted to go to their male lapdancing nights. But alas, I never did, and now I never shall.

Apparently their "pay one price, drink all night" door policy was lambasted by the police. Sigh.

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I hid Kim Wilde?! I'm not sure that I've ever felt more disappointed with myself.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:02 (twenty years ago)

I think you removed it forcibly from my hands and hid it because I was threatening to play the Libertines. ;-)

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:06 (twenty years ago)

HI DERE

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:07 (twenty years ago)

OHMIGOD, HE LIVES!!!

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:07 (twenty years ago)

R-dude! How's the head? I'm starting to feel more human.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Well, I'm at work now. I feel OK. Not great, but the extra sleep sure did help a lot.

Thanks to all who came out - I feel like I should apologise (especially to Colette) for the somewhat dodgy nature of the place. It usually isn't that bad! I mean, mens loos not working, stupid bouncers... grrrr.

I got your text Sarah - I hope you're feeling better today!

Anyway, it was kinda a weird night but I had fun. OMG did I really hump ken c rodeo-stylee? Jesus. I realise now that I really shouldn't be let out of the house.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:18 (twenty years ago)

WAHT IS YOUR HEAD MADE?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:19 (twenty years ago)

i think it was just a quickie rob. i couldn't keep it up

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:21 (twenty years ago)

soz i couldn't make it to this. hope rob had a good birthday bash...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:22 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I'm feeling better now, but tired, I'm gutted I missed this - I owe you a margarita dude!

Starry (hello chickens), Friday, 17 September 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

And big thanks to all Jim, Kate, Marianna - I have no idea how you guys managed to navigate through my mess of CDs and pick better songs than I could ever hope to! I never did do the little DJ set I planned on, and kinda just drunkenly picked random tracks, some after good suggestions (Paul Simon! B.A.D.!). I was clearly having trouble with teh bouze...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:07 (twenty years ago)

I need to hear more about what I missed here! Fights, pole-dancing, smearing with cake - I'm very sorry I didn't come for that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:29 (twenty years ago)

I still can't get over how good that cake was.

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:29 (twenty years ago)

the stoned bouncer stole my camera and then called the cops!

ok, let me see if i can tell the whole story without forgetting any important bits...

it all started when liz started pole dancing.

i thought this was adorable, so took out my camera to snap a shot. a (very large-- at least half a head taller and easily twice as wide) bouncer said something like 'lemme see,' and i thought he wanted to take a picture of all of us or something, so i let him take the camera. then he walked away with it. i was chasing after him, saying 'give it back. um, excuse me? you have my camera...' and he just shouldered me out of the way.

we get to the bar and he started pushing all the buttons, so i said 'can you stop doing that? you're going to break it!' and he said 'you think you can come in here and take pictures of me? you can't do that. are you a fucking cop!?' i said 'do i look like a cop? i don't know you. why would i want a picture of you? can't i just delete it? here, let me delete it' and i grab for the camera and he shouldered me out of the way again, and i grabbed for it, and there was a tussle over it and he shoved me and i may have slapped him (the only part of him i could reach, after he'd started shoving me)

at this stage, i figured out that the problem was probably that he'd had a joint in his mouth when the flash went off, and he freaked out about it.

manager 1 comes up. he takes bouncer into the stairwell, comes back empty handed. i say i want my camera back, that i'm happy to delete the picture, to show the manager how to delete the picture, to have a friend delete the picture. no luck.

manager 2 comes up. same thing. no luck. bouncer comes back out and comes up to me at the bar and says 'i've called the cops! they'll settle this! you'll see! i'll sue you!' and i finally say 'look, why the hell would i want a picture of your ugly face, anyway? i was taking a picture of my friend, not you!'

anyway, the managers walk us downstairs. we stand outside and he goes into this huge rant of 'who are you? no, who ARE you? you think i'm the rasta man and you can just take my picture, but you're wrong. look me in the face and tell me who you are' and i did and said 'i'm colette. i'm at my friend's birthday party. i took a picture of my friend. i'd like my camera back. i'll delete the picture' and he started going on about how he was going to sue me again or whatever and i gave up.

(i'm usually very good at calming down drunk irrational people-- ask charlie no 4 about the arsenal fans that climbed through the window at a party and i had to talk them out. but this guy was totally delusional!)

the police get there. like 2 or 3 police vans, and cops in bulletproof vests and everything! my friend tave's friend matt pulls out his badge (i didn't even know he was a cop!) and steps aside with one of the brixton cops. i let bouncer give his side of the story, and the cops roll their eyes and ask for the camera, which they hand to me. i offer to show them all the photos from the night, and to delete the last one. i demonstrate this, and show the bouncer that the next photo is in michigan in the snow (obviously not the same night) and just before that was me all goffed up from last weekend (obviously not the same night). the cops apologize to me for the trouble, the bouncer is still ranting away. a cop says 'why was he so upset about the picture?' and i said 'i think it was because he was smoking a joint while working?' and he said 'ahhhh. i see'

i said i wanted to leave, and if the police would wait for me while i got my stuff, and made sure he didn't get me, i'd appreciate it. they agreed that it would be a good idea. tave and matt walk me to the bus stop, i got on a bus, and went home. matt told me he'd suggested that the cops run a check on the guy, and he was still being held for questioning when we left.

and i have a huge bruise/welt on my arm that appeared somewhere in all of this. boo.

god, what a weird night!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:38 (twenty years ago)

by the way, that cake was like the best thing i've ever eaten. the icing was amazing. the cake was perfect. liz is a genius!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:42 (twenty years ago)

That sounds totally fucked up, Colette! What an idiot! (Though bizarre the way that police in Brixton arrive by the vanload.)

Danger Whore (kate), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:43 (twenty years ago)

only in americabrixton...

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:45 (twenty years ago)

i guess they must have a vanful of police on standby each night (to deal with occurences of camera shy bouncers and hat-tacking incidents)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry I wasn't there, Colette, though I can't imagine I'd have been all that much help. (Also sorry to miss a Liz cake, which are always a special treat!)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:50 (twenty years ago)

Wow Colette, you are my hero!! Rock on lady, although I am sorry you got hurt during the ruckus! (bring the mutha f@#kin ruckus, bring the mutha f@#kin ruckus!)

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 10:53 (twenty years ago)

it all started when liz started pole dancing

*makes note for when furnishing new flat*

Also, props to Colette for BRINGING THE PAIN to shitty bouncers.

robster (robster), Friday, 17 September 2004 11:20 (twenty years ago)

'who are you? no, who ARE you? you think i'm the rasta man and you can just take my picture, but you're wrong. look me in the face and tell me who you are'

Another shining example to his race, then. Another walking advert for the B*P.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Friday, 17 September 2004 11:27 (twenty years ago)

uh, what?

the neurotic rassafrassa of harrumph (blueski), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:04 (twenty years ago)

WTF?

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:07 (twenty years ago)

dnftt

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:28 (twenty years ago)

who are you? no, who ARE you?

Cor, imagine if he'd been present at the Big Brother fight. Him and Victor could've got stuck in an infinite loop!

JimD (JimD), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:31 (twenty years ago)

who are ya? who are ya? who are ya? who are ya?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Cor, imagine if he'd been present at the Big Brother fight. Him and Victor could've got stuck in an infinite loop!

'who are you?'
'who am i?'
'who are YOU?'
'who AM i?'
'WHO are you?'
'who am I?'
'who ARE you?'
'WHO am i?'
'who are you?'
'who am i?'

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 12:37 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he was saying "Who is it?" and paying tender tribute to Mantronix.

Donnie Smith The Quiz Kid, Friday, 17 September 2004 13:07 (twenty years ago)

That Mantronix song rules.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago)

rob, do you have a number for them there at living? i'm only getting a voicemail for the dude that manages all the bars, and don't know if that's the right one...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago)

I learned some valuable lessons about having a party at a club in Brixton:

1. Even if you phone ahead to book it, phone ahead AGAIN to make sure the actual staff that night know you are having a party (they had no idea I had the upstairs booked when we got there).

2. If you plan on DJing, or having friends DJ - it is usually helpful to bring along headphones since clubs don't have them. (I am teh stupid)

3. If you want to play music which mostly resides on CD-R's, make sure that the CD decks can play the damn things. There were many of my discs which just wouldn't work, or take ages to load a track. It was a proper Numark CD Deck, but it was pretty old and well abused. Apparently I was very close to getting a smackdown from Jim thanks to the deck sticking on a dodgy Joy Division/Missy mix! (I really wanted the next track but the damn thing wouldn't advance)

4. Make sure the bar can provide a full range of drinks (including beer ON TAP DAMMIT). Although this was probably a blessing in disguise - if I was let loose on glass pints I would have been in a different world of ruin.

5. Actually, don't bother. Have people over to my house instead next time... (although I don't have a pole)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Numark stuff is rubbish.

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

although I don't have a pole

or bouncers...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:55 (twenty years ago)

colette i don't have the info for the guy i booked it with here right now (i can get it to you later). but they have a number in the 'booking' section of their website - O2O7 326 4O4O (their website is all fucked up right now i think)

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Ed OTM.
I have used one Numark CD-deck thingy that was OK, but I've never been a fan of their actual mixers.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 17 September 2004 13:58 (twenty years ago)

normally I remember the headphones but forget the adpater plugs.

Ed (dali), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

ok, i just talked to a manager there and he says he's going to 'take care of that guy' and seemed to find the story as bizarre as i do ('wait. HE called the police? what for? i don't understand?')

still, not planning on going back there at any point!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:25 (twenty years ago)

You should tell him you are thinking about pressing charges against this guy!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:26 (twenty years ago)

You should totally wrangle some sort of 'free cocktails for ever' deal.

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:34 (twenty years ago)

yeh but for nicer bars than that one

teh pow! (blueski), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

You should totally wrangle some sort of 'free cocktails for ever' deal.

except that would mean going back...ewww

colette (a2lette), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Indeed!!
x-post
Stevem that doesnt matter when free cocktails are at stake!!

PinXor (Pinkpanther), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

A few years ago my best friend at the time took the security firm at our students' union to court. With good reason, they took issue with the fact that he was gay and mouthy and sent a gang of lads after him to beat him with a fire extinguisher. The bouncer in question was fired by the security firm retained, and the sheer amount of POWER he had over them was amazing - if I was with him we could jump the queue, get in for free, get in when it was full, whatever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 17 September 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago)

i can't remember if i wrote about it, but the other weird thing about that night was having this photographer recognize me from a shoot i did as a favor for a friend (where they painted wrinkles on me for a before and after thing). the pictures came out in todays sunday m1rr0r and it's terrible! and they say i'm 31! but i'm only 27! gah.

at least nobody i know reads that paper, right?

colette (a2lette), Sunday, 19 September 2004 21:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm T Bolton and my birthday was the 15th, America though, so I guess the name is more common there
