They've changed them yet again...

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 10 September 2004 01:11 (twenty years ago)

fucking Lucas added five minutes of shit to THX-1138.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Lucas the Hutt continues to despoil our childhood one little piece at a time. I wouldn't be surprised if he keeps tampering with these films until he dies.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:23 (twenty years ago)

On the upside, it looks like he's corrected more SFX fuckups and made some of the worse 1997 SFX palatable.

Some condensed changes:
- matte lines gone
- better colors
- Dolby EX soundtrack
- better Jabba in A New Hope
- better handling of Greedo/Han shootout
- lightsabers look consistent across the whole series
- more ground battle on Hoth
- Ian McDiarmid now in Empire, with the same lines plus a few more
- Temuera Morrison does the voices of all the stormtroopers
- the 1997 edition Luke scream when falling down the Cloud City shaft has been removed
- revealed Vader has eyebrows removed and eye color changed to match prequels
- end celebrations now include Naboo
- Death Star II actually changes slightly to look like it's actually being constructed
- Hayden Christensen now plays Ghost Anakin at the very end.

Some screenshots

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 10 September 2004 01:47 (twenty years ago)

why one voice for all of the stormtroopers?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:51 (twenty years ago)

I don't care. He should have left them as they were - even the special editions were a step too far for me.

xpost - something to do with them all being clones of Boba Fett's dad.

Wooden (Wooden), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:52 (twenty years ago)

cf Attack of the Clones

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 10 September 2004 01:52 (twenty years ago)

that is so ghey.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:54 (twenty years ago)

This would not bother me nearly as much if we could also get the original versions.

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:57 (twenty years ago)

sup3rhappyfun has all three transfered from the laserdisc releases, if you really want an original vers. on DVD.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 10 September 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago)

wooden if your childhood memories are so easily despoiled i don't envy them

i kind of have to admire the chutzpah of his gesamtkunstwerkiness

xpost Dan if you could go back in time with a couple of Beta cassettes and show them to the young you.. well you'd have yourself a way to make money at the horse races every day

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:00 (twenty years ago)

I've never managed to sit through one of these all the way. I'm OK with sci-fi, like blockbusters, but these bore me senseless. At least the new ones have Natalie Portman in ridiculous attire (oh hey, my shirt accidentally ripped right across my midriff!).

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

oh and thx-1138, is that the one where lucas ate a couple of anthony burgess novels and some george orwell and smeared the resultant shit directly onto celluloid?

Now That's Despoiling (tracerhand), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:03 (twenty years ago)

You're thinking of American Graffiti.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:04 (twenty years ago)

This would not bother me nearly as much if we could also get the original versions.

...which is where I step in to say, look for these if you can find them:

http://www.prillaman.net/starwarsdvdreview-bootleg5.html

I have a Star Wars copy from this set -- and mighty glad I am too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:18 (twenty years ago)

end celebrations now include Naboo

This actually bugs me in that I sorta wanted Episode III to have Anakin torching the planet in a fit of pique.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to torch all of you in a fique of pit if you don't stop wasting precious moments on planet earth talking about Gerge Lucas. It all happened a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away! Get over it!

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Maybe that was unfair.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:25 (twenty years ago)

Shouldn't you be in bed sleeping off strawberry lambics and fried fish fingers?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:26 (twenty years ago)

Maybe that was unfair.

Yeah, especially to Gerge Lucas, whoever the hell he is.

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 10 September 2004 02:26 (twenty years ago)

B-B-But FFS Lucas really doesn't get it does he?
Now he's changing shit in the original trilogy so it conforms to the horseshit prequel trilogy? What a jackass.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:30 (twenty years ago)

I AM PUTTING MY PRECIOUS HOURS TO USE BY TALKING ABOUT GERGE ULAKS FOR PRENISDET.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:34 (twenty years ago)

Wait, ARE you back in America? Shouldn't the ground be trembling and the sky boiling or something?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:36 (twenty years ago)

- Hayden Christensen now plays Ghost Anakin at the very end.

this is stupid beyond belief.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Star Wars genetics, as performed by emo scientists:
http://www.coldbacon.com/pics/lucas1.gif

Girolamo Savonarola, Friday, 10 September 2004 02:36 (twenty years ago)

i hear they're going to remove that kisses leia gives luke in 'star wars' ans 'empire' because of the whole bro/sis thing that was blatantly made up for jedi.

i also hear that harrison ford's face is gonna be rplaced by jimmy smits. digitally.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:46 (twenty years ago)

"if you don't step the fuck outta my way i am going to replace your face" flexes fist "digitally"

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Actually, this little observation on the review site also bugs:

There are also a couple minor changes - the shot of Coruscant now includes the Jedi Temple on the horizon.

Man, fuck that. I wanted the Temple to go down in flames in Episode III, why the hell would the Emperor even want it around?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:50 (twenty years ago)

Ned i'm in London for some reason

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Amazing. So, fish fingers?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:53 (twenty years ago)

is that what they're calling it these days?

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 10 September 2004 02:55 (twenty years ago)

yes. digitally.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:04 (twenty years ago)

fish fingers are for the ruder sort of people, ned. prawns with thousand island dressing served in a sundae glass is what polite people eat.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:08 (twenty years ago)

You guys really care about this shit? The content of the films is hardly changing at all.

Yeah, it would be nice to have a copy of the original cut of each film, but I'm all for the revising of this stuff. It's his life's work, for fuck's sake. Can you imagine how much it would piss you off to have all these glaring inconsistencies everywhere? I'm really looking forward to having Episodes 1-6 marathon in the near future.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:10 (twenty years ago)

Andrew is the new Momus.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure Momus wouldn't really get into Star Wars.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:20 (twenty years ago)

(Actually, I pretty well fall between Dan and Andrew on this whole thing. And since I have the original Star Wars at least, fuck, bring on the revisions!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:20 (twenty years ago)

at least they haven't fuck with indy (yet)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago)

please substitute the past-tense of "fuck" in that sentence

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago)

If I ever see George Lucas in the street, I will fucking hogtie him and call him ma'am, fucking Greedo shoots first and walking around Jabba the Hut. That is so sick and twisted and perverse.

xpost they need to fuck with the Temple of Doom and digitally replace Kate Capshaw with, oh, anyone else in the world.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:25 (twenty years ago)

they're changing back the greedo thing i heard.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:27 (twenty years ago)

ok agreed on that one (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:27 (twenty years ago)

xpost they need to fuck with the Temple of Doom and digitally replace Kate Capshaw with, oh, anyone else in the world.

They need to fuck with a LOT of things in that film.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:31 (twenty years ago)

keep the monkey brains though!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:32 (twenty years ago)

Things to fuck with in Temple of Doom:

- Shockingly blatant racism
- Kate Capshaw
- The whole "Indy is evil for like 5 minutes" sequence

Actually they just need to replace the entire thing and set it in some Nazi dominated situation again, because obviously that's what works for Indiana Jones.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago)

i'm looking forward to see if they're actually getting rid of the matte lines and other fx mistakes this time.

the thing that REALLY bothered me more than anything with the first special edition changes was that they tacked on all this this superfluous stuff and din't really fix the original FX much.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Things to fuck with in Temple of Doom:

Make Dan Ackroyd's part longer than two lines and a quick over-the-shoulder camera shot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

i don't remember the evil indy sequence!

really they could just chop off the movie after the shanghai nightclub opening

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

oh and the mine-cart chase!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Fix the fucking BAD music in the temple ceremony scene.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

In fact, make the temple not look like such a cheap set. Really, it's not much better than the sets in those Richard Chamberlain/Allan Quatermain knockoff films.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:35 (twenty years ago)

they digitally removed the movie from that one w/sean connery and replaced it with the mummy

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Beat whichever of the screenwriters thought they could write witty screwball comedy in a thirties vein.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago)

ally so otm about indy making more sense fighting nazis

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago)

they should really just digitally erase short round and replace him with jar jar binks.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago)

no one would notice much i bet.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Actually they just need to replace the entire thing and set it in some Nazi dominated situation again, because obviously that's what works for Indiana Jones.

Indiana Jones 4: They Saved Hitler's Brain, the Electric Boogaloo

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago)

Beat whichever of the screenwriters thought they could write witty screwball comedy in a thirties vein.

i like how we've moved from re-cutting movies to brutalizing people (would footage of the beating appear during the credits?)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:37 (twenty years ago)

they should really just digitally erase short round and replace him with jar jar binks.

"Yousa CHEAT, Dr. Jones!"

"Yeah, eat me, you big-eared freak."

i like how we've moved from re-cutting movies to brutalizing people (would footage of the beating appear during the credits?)

And the outtakes would appear with the end credits.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:38 (twenty years ago)

actually it would make more sense if they digitally edited out the nazis and replaced them with taliban or something

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:39 (twenty years ago)

"In this newly restored version of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Lucas and Spielberg have used digital editing technology to replace the entire film with The Great Escape, erasing the faces of Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson and James Coburn and replacing them with Harrison Ford, Jonathan Ke Quan, Denholm Elliot, Kate Capshaw, and John Rhys-Davies. 'We left the original dialogue of The Great Escape in place, supplementing it with an entirely digitally-created scene involving monkey brains and a rollercoaster,' said Lucas. 'We felt that was more representative of the spirit of Indy.' Spielberg added, 'We also digitally replaced Dan Akroyd's sequence, which we added into The Great Escape, with some shots of Jar-Jar Binks, for the kids.'"

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:40 (twenty years ago)

actually they should do that with schindler's list

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:40 (twenty years ago)

xpost

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:40 (twenty years ago)

What else needs changing? Well Ally nailed the Kate Capshaw thing so well that I can't even mention the individual horrors that would go with her. No damned screams every five seconds...

Hey wait!

Replace Kate Capshaw with late thirties era KATE HEPBURN. (Then watch as Hepburn brushes off Indiana, cuts the bridge with sheer force of wit...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:40 (twenty years ago)

Man, fuck that. I wanted the Temple to go down in flames in Episode III, why the hell would the Emperor even want it around?

-- Ned Raggett

Ned-

I'm pretty sure the Emperor uses the Temple as his home or lair or something, rubbing salt in the proverbial wound.

I don't know how I know this, and I might be wrong, but I was quite the fanboy for a good while.

Are the bootleg DVDs good quality, apart from the content being better than Special Edition?

Richard K (Richard K), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:40 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Von Ryan's Express would also work. (xpost)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:41 (twenty years ago)

Are the bootleg DVDs good quality

The one I have is -- isn't perfect of course but it's pretty damned close.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:42 (twenty years ago)

Dude just bring back Karen Fucking Allen, what was she doing that was so important?

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:42 (twenty years ago)

I KNOW!!!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

the difference between those two characters is really depressing

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

< geek > Well in the TIMELINE see Temple of Doom occurred before Raiders and so Karen Allen was in Nepal and...< / geek > *is beaten*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

"i like how we've moved from re-cutting movies to brutalizing people (would footage of the beating appear during the credits?)

And the outtakes would appear with the end credits. "

Smokey and the Bandit 4--Smackdown!

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago)

Of course the easy way around that problem was just to have Indy et al end up in Nepal first before India, then Capshaw meets with a mysterious yak accident and Allen's character comes along and kicks ass, and then she and Indy both get amnesia and he goes back to the States and she goes back to Nepal. Simple!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago)

I know, it is like comparing Viven Leigh with, like, Tara Reid.

xpost Temple of Doom occurs before Raiders???! What? WTF is wrong with these people that they can't put out movies in proper chronological sequences?

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago)

wait temple of doom was supposed to happen first? really? (haha xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:45 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, it is indeed a prequel, it's supposed to be three or four years before Raiders, I think they identify the years at the start of both films.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:45 (twenty years ago)

they should replace all the alien characters in episode I with members of the ethnic groups they are stereotyping

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:45 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Anyway it'd still work because IIRC the indy/whatshername backstory is never really explained in Raiders, so the backstory could've BEEN Temple. I mean, I'd be really fucking pissed off with Indiana Jones too if I had been stuck in the Temple of Doom.

xpost hahahahaha

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Amst wins.

GEEK BASTARDRY:

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:47 (twenty years ago)

there we go.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:48 (twenty years ago)

one device i always thought was really great in the indy movies was the tippin' of the hat to indy's serial origins by starting every movie with the last episode of another adventure

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:48 (twenty years ago)

except for that demystifying young indiana jones crap in the last one

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:48 (twenty years ago)

you mean jewas
-- s1ocki (slytus...), September 10th, 2004.

well i guess mel brooks character in spaceballs would count then.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago)

I gotta say that the titles of these other 'adventures' or TV show nonsense or whatever just make me want to hit people:

Indiana Jones and the Seven Veils

YOUNG INDIANA JONES AND THE SCANDAL OF 1920

YOUNG INDIANA JONES AND THE PHANTOM TRAIN OF DOOM

And my favorite!

Young Indiana Jones and the Eye of the Tiger

DUNH! DUNH-DUNH-DUNH!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:49 (twenty years ago)

is that what they're called? god i used to love spaceballs (xp)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago)

YOUNG INDIANA JONES AND THE SCANDAL OF 1920

that actually sounds like a movie from 1920!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago)

"gold diggers of nazi germany"

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago)

Seriously how great would it be to have Harrison Ford as Indy walking through the streets of Cairo being followed by Survivor like in that commercial and then he turns around and shrugs and shoots the lead singer?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:50 (twenty years ago)

I also like these techniques:

1) the map with the red line to represent where they are going, a la films of the 30s and 40s.
2) the stupid Indy-needs-his-lucky-hat joke.
3) the idea that there are hot archaeologists

xpost my sister used to totally cream herself over that dude from Young Indiana Jones. I forget what his name was but she was like over the moon for that kid, it was so bizarre.

omg, this TofD happening before Raiders of the Lost Ark thing! I can't believe I didn't know that. I now must watch the movies again for the hundreth time, suffering through Kate Capshaw's awful hair and wailing ("Innndeeeee!")

All fine things indeed. And they gotta breed archaeologists SOMEHOW.

Let us not forget the main theme either.

Young Indiana Jones and Where'd The Muthafuckin' Cheese Go At?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:53 (twenty years ago)

omg, this TofD happening before Raiders of the Lost Ark thing! I can't believe I didn't know that.

Which makes the whole joke of Indy facing TWO swordsmen and not having his gun a weird reverse anachronism...sorta.

that slapsticky scene with the bedrooms is SO EMBARASSING

Watching that again semi-recently made me cringe.

(oh, such an xpost)

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Sean Patrick Flannery.

I got him confused with Neil Patrick Harris.

Which is really obviously completely wrong.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 03:55 (twenty years ago)

Fucking brilliant!

*digs in archives* I knew posted a rant somewhere on this thread...

* A huge flaw with Temple is that the script comes across as fits and starts rather than a flowing story while the shoehorning of It Happened One Night-style humor...except nowhere near as good...into an adventure just grinds things to a halt. The problem really is one of suffering by comparison as well, though -- Raiders, again, has no fat and easily moves from one locale to another, with exposition noted and then dispatched with as quickly as possible. In contrast stuff like the 'wacky' Indy and Short Round play cards while all the animals freak out Willie hoho (bit with the snake was nice though) and the 'it's just like Moonlighting/no they both ripped off something else' bedroom scenes just made me think "END! GET TO SOMETHING ELSE!" Maybe Temple's screenwriters -- the same team that did both American Graffiti and Howard the Duck, weird ass contrast there -- felt that they had to have both the locale and backstory explained a bit more to an audience presumably unfamiliar with Indian history and religion, but where the dinner scene in Temple has a really forced way in explaining that backstory around the monkey brains and eye soup and all that, something like the interpretation-of-the-amulet scene in Raiders has just enough breathless wonder. (A warning sign in retrospect was on the documentary when both Lucas and Spielberg noted that they had wanted to get in some set pieces into Raiders but couldn't -- a water/raft scene and a mine chase scene, for instance -- and so the script was in part built around that. It's a very James Bond movie way of conceiving of a script, at least during Roger Moore's heyday, and like seventies Bond the set pieces take precedence over story. Which leads me to:)

* No moment in Temple has any of the same sense of discovery, awe or even chills that Raiders has. Lucas and Spielberg and others keep talking about how Temple is a dark film, but it isn't -- Nickalicious was right upthread on that point. There's grim things, yes, but as filmed and presented there's very little truly chilling or unnerving. A couple of times things come close -- for instance, Ford does a great job conveying, understatedly, a sudden interest and excitement when he first learns about the theft of the sacred stone. And Mola Ram's a great villain who isn't on the screen often enough, in fact I think he's almost too good for the famous heart-removing scene -- that famous pose of him holding the flaming heart which was in the movie poster is iconography let down by the surrounding scene. But contrast the more elaborate set of the temple and how it's handled -- and one huge problem of that set it that it never stops SEEMING like a set -- with the mysterious shadows and ominous music of the Well of Souls in Raiders, and the exquisite way the Ark is slowly revealed. John Williams's pretty pedestrian 'tribal' music and the big muscle guys with the Shankara Stones just all seems more like something fit for the Allan Quatermain knockoffs that Golan/Globus did the following two years. And there's nothing as flat out weird and uncomfortable as the sudden edit between the scene of the Ark burning off the Nazi insignia to the silent ship bedroom, or the first sudden recurrence of the Ark 'pulse' in the climactic Raiders sequence.

* Kate Capshaw came off pretty darn well in her documentary interview and I had more knowledge and respect for her as a person, and a better understanding of what she saw as unfair criticism of the character she played (as opposed to the acting, I'll note!). All well and good -- but the character and how she played her still sucks, and again it's mostly by comparison. The relationship between Indy and Marion in Raiders had history, there was subtext, Marion clearly had a brain and used it, took no shit, etc. Karen Allen played a character in an homage to swashbucklers that wasn't meant to be something with depth in the first place and made her seem REAL with her interjections, irreverence and more -- and DAMN if the bedroom scene on the boat isn't hot. Willie is no Marion, and that perhaps was perfectly intentional but there wasn't anything to CARE about her, and most of the time she ended up being disgusted with her surroundings, screaming or escaping. Big whoop. Cripes, the character even ruins a brilliantly tense moment on the bridge scene -- Indy quickly thinks, makes a decision, gets ready, tells Short Round to get ready (but doesn't let the audience in on it, good call there), Short Round tells Willie and then the whole thing becomes overplayed comedy again. GARG. That the film recovers so quickly with the perfect scenery chewing of the "Prepare to meet Kali!" bit is to its credit but oh how much better it would have been without Willie's unneeded diversion.

* Oh and about Short Round...well, whatever. He's no Sallah. Dear lord the bad jokes they gave him though (the "No time for love, Dr. Jones!" bit was great but the "Feel like stepping on fortune cookies" yeah yeah FUCK YOU).

In sum, Raiders was a shoot-the-moon 'let's try it and make it work' idea, Temple was a 'great! the franchise is established! now we don't need to make everything work completely!' followup. Bah.

seriously WTF?!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 10 September 2004 07:50 (twenty years ago)

I think the interesting thing about that shot is that Lucas restrained himself enough not to replace Alec Guinness with Ewan MacGregor.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 10 September 2004 08:39 (twenty years ago)

perhaps that was a contractual thing considering Guiness was signed up for all three films so must appear in all three films.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 10 September 2004 08:41 (twenty years ago)

I suppose it's too much to ask for the Hans/Jabba scene to be removed from the first film and the awful 'treading on his tail' clip.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 10 September 2004 08:51 (twenty years ago)

who has a shot of the original original jabba man?
you know that fat fellow.
was that ever shown on anything? how could i have seen it? oh on the 'making of...' tv show i guess.

but back to indy j for a second, is the scene that they cut from the uk release with the heart getting ripped out back in on the dvd? it always annoyed me that over in the u.s. it was a pg-13 but over here they didn't bother with such fripperies and just chopped bits out.
we couldn't even see *gremlins* until we were 15!

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago)

that's be pretty easy to do actually - re-dub and maybe morph actors mouths if necessary

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:06 (twenty years ago)

I suppose it's not a question of CAN so much as WANT.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:13 (twenty years ago)

OK I'm basically pissing myself over that screen shot with Hayden Christiansen, what is that?

Also: digitally redo Jabba all you want, it doesn't change the fact that he's suddenly WALKING AROUND LIKE A HUGE FUCKING SLUG.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:32 (twenty years ago)

I think the joke that everyone wants to make, but is too chickenshit, is that we would all be "digitally manipulating" ourselves if the original versions were finally released on DVD.

The above was a free public service lame joke provided by the United Way.

Huk-L, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago)

I think the interesting thing about that shot is that Lucas restrained himself enough not to replace Alec Guinness with Ewan MacGregor.

i had this thought too! as it stands the age difference is just weird.

jones (actual), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago)

god it must be weird to be a super-rich complete wingnut

jones (actual), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Fans of Indy's excellent coughing and muttering technique will appreciate that FFC is re-releasing the actual original no bullshit 'Viet Kong Y-Wing' version of 'Apocalypse Now' quite soon. Lucas' idea of selling a slightly newer version of his old films every five years is the essence of consumer capitalism. If there's mugs out there, take 'em for a ride. Unlike 'Redux', however, they don't raise many issues of content.

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Christopher Walken as Han Solo.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago)

And quite honestly I do think Donnie Darko makes a better Anakin Skywalker origin story than all these insipid prequels.

Also they should replace that one guy in Jabba's palace with Flea.
And put Buster Poindexter in place of that fat blue thing.

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:57 (twenty years ago)

Leia = Trixie

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 September 2004 14:58 (twenty years ago)

They should just digitally remove Return of the Jedi and replace it with something else entirely, Brian's Song perhaps.

Allyzay Science Explosion (allyzay), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago)

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 10 September 2004 14:59 (twenty years ago)

i bet when lucas finally 'relents' and packages STAR WARS CLASSIC on dvd he'll announce that they're using the original prints, but really he'll have spent eight years in his bedroom digitally recreating the stuff he changed.

jones (actual), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

FREAK

jones (actual), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Actually, what they ought to do, is just take the closing credits of every other movie in the world, and replace it with the battle against the AT-ATs on Hoth. Then 1. All movies are immediately worth sitting through once 2. I'm happy as a basket of kittens.

TOMBOT, Friday, 10 September 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

i think the changes are markedly better on a purely aesthetic basis but i don't suppose people really care about that or would deny it anyway.

is Jake Lloyd old enough to think 'omg i am such an asshat in that film' yet?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 10 September 2004 15:09 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha they should digitally replace him with Christian Bale from Empire Of The Sun.

Added bonus, replace Jar Jar Binks with Dastoor.

Marion couldn't have worked in "Temple of Doom" because their entire backstory is "teenage crush gone horribly wrong"; Indy really has the background with her father IIRC. Willy works perfectly because a) she's of age at the time of the story; and b) she's horrifying enough that it's not at all a surprise that she was no longer around for "Raiders".

George Lucas talks shop as original Star Wars trilogy returns
By David Germain
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) — George Lucas never figured on a 30-year career as a space pilot. Once Star Wars shot into hyperspace, though, he found it hard to come back down to Earth.
Making its DVD debut Tuesday, Lucas’s original sci-fi trilogy — Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi — began as an experimental foray into old-time studio moviemaking for Lucas, whose first two films had been far removed from usual Hollywood sensibilities.
Lucas’s sci-fi satire THX 1138 had been a commercial dud, but the energetic American Graffiti with its driving soundtrack and multi-character point of view scored with audiences, giving the director clout to try something bigger that had been on his mind.
“I’d already started this other idea, which was to do a kind of a classic action adventure film using sets,” Lucas said over lunch at his 1,000-hectare Skywalker Ranch. “I’d never worked on a set, I’d never worked at a studio. Never made a traditional movie. So I said, ‘I’m going to do this once, just to see what it’s like, what it’s like to actually design everything, work on a soundstage, do an old-fashioned 1930s movie.
“And I’ll do it in that mode from the 1930s Saturday matinee serials, using kind of 1930s and ’40s sensibilities, and I’ll base it on sort of mythological motifs and icons. I’ll just put it together in a modern form, and I’ll have fun. That’s how I got into that. I did it because it was an interesting move into an area that I thought I’d never go into.”
Three decades later, Lucas is preparing to launch the last of his six Star Wars films. Next summer brings Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, completing the prequel trilogy that tells the story of young Anakin Skywalker’s metamorphosis into the villainous Darth Vader of the original three films.
Fans have eagerly awaited the first three Star Wars films on DVD, a release Lucas initially intended to delay until he finished Episode III.
Some will be miffed that the original theatrical versions are not included in the Star Wars boxed set, which features only the special-edition versions Lucas issued in the late 1990s, with added effects and footage, including a scene between Harrison Ford’s Han Solo and crime lord Jabba the Hutt in the first Star Wars.
AP: Why did you change your mind and decide to put the original three movies out on DVD now?
Lucas: Just because the market has shifted so dramatically. A lot of people are getting very worried about piracy. That has really eaten dramatically into the sales. It really just came down to, there may not be a market when I wanted to bring it out, which was like, three years from now. So rather than just sit by and watch the whole thing fall apart, better to bring it out early and get it over with.
AP: Why did you rework the original trilogy into the special-edition versions in the late 1990s?
Lucas: To me, the special-edition ones are the films I wanted to make. Anybody that makes films knows the film is never finished. It’s abandoned or it’s ripped out of your hands, and it’s thrown into the marketplace, never finished. It’s a very rare experience where you find a filmmaker who says, “That’s exactly what I wanted. I got everything I needed. I made it just perfect. I’m going to put it out there.” And even most artists, most painters, even composers would want to come back and redo their work now. They’ve got a new perspective on it, they’ve got more resources, they have better technology, and they can fix or finish the things that were never done. ... I wanted to actually finish the film the way it was meant to be when I was originally doing it. At the beginning, people went, “Don’t you like it?” I said, “Well, the film only came out to be 25 or 30 per cent of what I wanted it to be.” They said, “What are you talking about?” So finally, I stopped saying that, but if you read any interviews for about an eight- or nine-year period there, it was all about how disappointed I was and how unhappy I was and what a dismal experience it was. You know, it’s too bad you need to get kind of half a job done and never get to finish it. So this was my chance to finish it.
AP: Why not release both the originals and special editions on DVD?
Lucas: The special edition, that’s the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it’s on VHS, if anybody wants it. ... I’m not going to spend the, we’re talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn’t really exist anymore. It’s like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I’m sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I’m the one who has to take responsibility for it. I’m the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they’re going to throw rocks at me, they’re going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.
AP: Do you pay much attention to fan reactions to your choices?
Lucas: Not really. The movies are what the movies are. ... The thing about science-fiction fans and Star Wars fans is they’re very independent-thinking people. They all think outside the box, but they all have very strong ideas about what should happen, and they think it should be their way. Which is fine, except I’m making the movies, so I should have it my way.
AP: After Episode III, will you ever revisit Star Wars?
Lucas: Ultimately, I’m going to probably move it into television and let other people take it. I’m sort of preserving the feature film part for what has happened and never go there again, but I can go off into various offshoots and things. You know, I’ve got offshoot novels, I’ve got offshoot comics. So it’s very easy to say, “Well, OK, that’s that genre, and I’ll find a really talented person to take it and create it.” Just like the comic books and the novels are somebody else’s way of doing it. I don’t mind that. Some of it might turn out to be pretty good. If I get the right people involved, it could be interesting.

Demystifying Yoda: Behind-the-scenes tales lighten gravity of Star Wars
By Anthony Breznican
LOS ANGELES (AP) — When it comes to Star Wars, maybe there’s too much gravity in space.
Fans invariably take Star Wars too seriously, but the people behind the sci-fi series recall the experience as a surreal comic opera.
Training a monkey to play Yoda? Studio complaints that Chewbacca was pantsless? The only thing that worked on R2-D2 was the dwarf inside?
As the original trilogy arrived on DVD for the first time Tuesday, the madcap tales told by those who lovingly toiled on Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi demystify three of the most revered sci-fi films of all time.
———
Not that kind of movie: Some films can be endlessly dissected and debated. But Luke Skywalker himself says Star Wars was just meant to be fun.
Twenty-seven years after the first movie debuted, actor Mark Hamill said he is amused by all the fact-checking fans do. One recent Web site shocked him.
“I think it was speculating on the administrative cost of the janitorial staff of the Death Star, taking this hard-edged reality to something that’s fantasy,” Hamill joked. “But I was that way myself. I remember saying things like, ‘Well, wait a minute. I just got out of the trash compactor. How come my hair’s all perfect?’ And Harrison (Ford) would go, ‘Hey kid...it ain’t that kind of movie.”’
———
Help me Obi-Wan: Some memories of Star Wars stick more than others — especially for the actors who had to do multiple shots of famous lines.
“I do remember permanently the hologram speech, because we had to reshoot it,” Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia, wearily told fans at the recent Comic-Con festival in San Diego.
“Whenever I get lost on the way to someone’s house, or I just forget your name, it’s because I remember the speech.... ‘General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars...”’ she said. “I’m a thousand years old and I still remember that thing. It’s very disturbing. I have to take medication, and yet it still won’t go away.”
———
‘Short’ circuit: “Every day there were terrible problems that had to be solved,” said 81-year-old Irvin Kershner, who is a real-life version of Obi-Wan Kenobi — the wise Jedi sage played by the late Alec Guinness.
Kershner, a film professor at the University of Southern California who was a mentor to Star Wars creator George Lucas, is the man Lucas asked to direct the sequel The Empire Strikes Back, which is widely regarded as the best of the series.
“Before I went off to do the film, I had a talk with George,” Kershner recalled. “He said, ‘I want you to know something. They’re going to prepare all these special devices for you but nothing is going to work.’ I thought he was kidding. From the third shot on, it was true. We had to improvise constantly.”
For instance, Kershner said he had eight R2-D2 robots, each of which could do a different task.
“But you know, they never did what you needed them to do. So we ended up pulling them with nylon cords instead of using the electronics because it would get stuck and go in little circles instead of going straight.”
“The only thing that worked was when we would put a little dwarf inside one and he’d shake him to show that R2-D2 was nervous. That worked, the human factor!”

Huk-L, Tuesday, 21 September 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to go home tonight and make sure that there's not a little dwarf inside my R2D2 Pepsi cooler.

Watched pretty much everything on disc four last night, and it's almost all fantastic, and worth £30 on its own. Then made a start on the episode IV commentary track. Favourite bit so far is lucas explaining the reason the old "But parsecs are a unit of distance, not time!" complaint is wrong - because in hyperspace, everyone's going at the same speed, so the fastest ship is the one that can plot the shortest route without hitting anything. When velocity is constant, distance equals time. So if you can make the kessel run in under twelve parsecs, that means you're the 'quickest'.

I have ordered 'The Complete Rising Damp' instead.

Here are some connections between Star Wars and Rising Damp:

Leonard Rossiter is in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In an episode of Rising Damp, Philip teaches Rigsby how to waft burning 'love wood'. This scene was later recreated almost frame by frame by George Lucas for the scene where Obi-Wan Kenobi teaches Luke Skywalker how to wield a light sabre.

I can't think of any more.

The big documentary on disc 4 is, surprisingly, well-done and interesting - especially all the details concerning the problems they had making the first movie. It's fascinating watching things like the sound effects guy (who is incredible) invent the sound for blasters by twanging barbed wire.

The best part, though, are the outtakes where you hear Peter Mayhew deliver Chewbacca's lines before they dubbed in the roars: "That old man is mad!" (And also David Prowse delivering Vader's lines in a Scottish accent.)

Hasbro, maker of Star Wars toys, is paying plastic tribute to Lucas, interpreting him as a limited-edition action figure in Storm Trooper attire.
The head of the toy maker’s Star Wars division called Lucas “the greatest character in the universe.”
“We took a cue from when Han Solo and Luke disguised themselves as Storm Troopers,” said Derryl DePriest, marketing director and admitted lifelong Star Wars fan. “We placed George in his own universe that he created.”
This is the first time Lucas has been honoured with an official Star Wars action figure, DePriest said, but not the first time his likeness has been used. Hasbro had previously issued a figure that looked like Lucas called George Sacul.
“That was very subtle,” DePriest said.
“This time we really wanted to pay tribute to the man himself.”
Lucas thought it was a “fun” idea, said Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale.
“He laughed because he never imagined he’d be a Storm Trooper,” she said.
The new toy is only available to participants in Hasbro’s Ultimate Galactic Hunt. Fans must show proof of purchase of five vintage Star Wars action figures to get the George Lucas Storm Trooper figurine.

'The individual DVDs will be taken off the market on Dec. 31, a strategy that Disney uses on many of its classic releases.'

Really?
