I accidentally ordered a second copy of a Farid el Atrache CD, Hekayet el Omr Kolloh when I wanted a differnt one, so I guess I will be giving that to the library. (I was actually "researching" other possible Farid CDs, by ordering them for myself first.) The good news is that after listening to it again tonight, I have to say it's pretty good. Some of the pieces have their flaws, but even those pieces have some pretty interesting twists and turns. Also, as I said before, his singing is consistently good, and I forgot just how good "Laktob Aawerak el Chagar" was.

"Four martyrs earned a new degree - the BACHELOR of BULLETS!"
Which is admittedly arguably better than any lyric Our Brian has come up with.
Although Mike Love's rap on the 12" of "Wipeout" by the Fat Boys runs it close... "We're gonna sing a song that everybody knows/Not some acid shit 'bout column ruin domin-O!"

Harry Nilsson - Aerial Pandemonium Ballet (I love this guy)
38 Special - Special Forces (George Herbert Walker Nickelback, sounds pretty endurable in retrospect)
Phil Lynott - Solo In Soho (good lyrics, stilted performance)
Peter Schilling - Error In The System (whoever Armin Sabol is, he sucks)
Jimmy Castor - C (Side one: plays the national anthem, then he tries to beat the Bee Gees at their own game, then he tries to do it while predicting Antmusic at the same time, wraps up with a Zep cover but he only remembers the lines "she's buying a stairway to heaven" and "it makes me wonder" so he just plays sax over the rest. Side two: Elvis gets the same treatment as Zep, then Carole Bayer Sager, then he either rips off Blondie's "Rapture" or foresees it or has a mind-meld - both came out in 1980 - while discussing Godzilla, and wraps things up with a funky rumination about the Mummy. WTF.)

Haven't heard Dreamland but I'm curious (last non-Unledded thing I heard was "29 Palms" on Fate Of Nations and I thought it was pretty back in middle school when the "progressive" station would play it). "In The Mood" is on The Principle Of Moments, I think. To be honest I don't really grab the individual titles, the tracks all kind of flow together for me.
The reason I said "don't quote me on that" is that I probably haven't given later Zep as much of a chance as I should. I know I like a few tracks on Graffiti (I've got the first box set's tracks taped in chronological order) but I don't have the same love for it I have for IV and Houses.

Anthony: I think Dreamland is great but I don't know how you'd react - it's pretty soft and quirky. Was Fate of Nations after Manic Nirvana? I thought you'd like PG since it's probably got the most funk or boogie of their albums.

yes it was! Thanks again! And in the new Blender there's a really good article about GC, the shit they put up with for not following obvious pop or punk templates (they're philosophical about it but you can tell they'd like more respect - I like how the album goes for more musical dexterity without being a total cave-in to the hardcore market, more bandwork AND lots of pop production!). Joel on Duff: "No, I'm not dating her. We're friends. She's a great girl and I like her a lot. But no, we're not dating. I get the impression she's not too interested in punk. *smiles wryly*"

Müller was in this trio Nachtluft, who put out a similarly awesome record in the 80s that was reissued on Atavistic. Now he runs the For4Ears label, which has released some cool stuff that I've only scratched the surface of, but the Lê Quan Ninh (member of Quatuar Helios)(they performed the great Cage Works for Percussion disc on Wergo) solo percussion record, Ustensiles, is a personal fave.
O'Rourke is awesome on this disc. People who dis him just have never heard this stuff, or any of the other wonderful improv records he's done.

I realized that the last of those is in fact the greatest recording ever, masterful and intense and emotionally draining. The perhaps obvious point also occurred to me that the reason lots of people just hear Indian classical music as background music or drug music (or pointless narcoleptic noodling) is because in the West, we are trained to hear harmonic movement as the driving force behind emotional responses to music. Since there is no harmonic motion at all in this music, people just hear it as static which can = trippy or tedious depending. (Minimalists are actually going for this static/trippy quality much of the time when they make drone-based music. Does this make them fundamentally conservative in a way?) They don't listen to all the detailed melodic motion and shifts in levels of melodic activity, let alone the timbral nuances and rhythmic intricacy (or they hear it but it doesn't signify more than light decoration over the drone). This might explain to some degree why my Dad hates rock music and minimalism. Also why he and some other non-music-freak Indian people I know find certain examples of free jazz (by the Coltranes) immediately accessible in a way that is totally counter-intuitive to what you'd expect from Western listeners.
It also occurred that while it may not be 100% accurate to say my favourite kinds of music are Indian classical music and 70s hard rock, it sounds hilarious so I might start using that.

Is that why serialism exists at all? Composers that recognised this turned around and deprived their compositions of harmony.

is the alter ego of the bay area band Mono Pause, where they play oddly accurate cover versions of Thai & Cambodian pop. Member Mark Gergis records under the name Porest, and compiled 'I Remember Syria' and 'Cambodian Cassette Archives', and Neung Phak plays a lot of those songs live, with a very subtle sub-theatrical edge on them.
I wish I went to parties. Friday was fun, AES convention, great panel with Buchla, Chowning, Max Matthews, Roger Linn, etc.

not sure exactly how old Buchla is. could be late 60's, early 70's. I actually see him around a lot at conventions, shows, dinners, he stood next to me at the garter belt throw at my friend's wedding last month, he's no recluse, just eccentric and laconic.
Max Matthews was sharp as tacks as you'd expect.

I really like this, but it's probably not something that would instantly win people over, at least until it gets to the clapping sections. The music is generally pretty slow-paced and the ensemble is fairly small. It would be nice to be listening to Iraqi music, so I could feel like it was a political act, but I think I might like Kuwaiti music more than Iraqi music (although I do like some of that). (I am starting to suspect that some of the "Gulf State" music I have on one cassette I like a lot is mostly Kuwaiti.)
I'm really very sleepy from last night.

I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desertYou're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record.
Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hairShe said that you gave it to herThat night that you planned to go clearDid you ever go clear?
Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much olderYour famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulderYou'd been to the station to meet every trainAnd you came home without Lili Marlene
And you treated my woman to a flake of your lifeAnd when she came back she was nobody's wife.
Well I see you there with the rose in your teethOne more thin gypsy thiefWell I see Jane's awake --
She sends her regards. And what can I tell you my brother, my killerWhat can I possibly say?I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive youI'm glad you stood in my way.
If you ever come by here, for Jane or for meYour enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.
Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyesI thought it was there for good so I never tried.
And Jane came by with a lock of your hairShe said that you gave it to herThat night that you planned to go clear
-- Sincerely, L. Cohen

beat furrer - the CD has 3 works from orchestra and one string quartet; this is mostly sound at microscopic levels, mostly hanging well together.
first side of 13th floor elevators 'easter everywhere' -- the twang on 'nobody to love' is one of the highlights.

last night I played more varese: enjoyed it lots before but actually the music is really sinking in, I can see the dada connections after listening to bits of the music UBU web. played 'ecuatorial', ionisation', 'deserts', 'dance for burgess' and 'tuning up'
webern in bits op10, 21, 30. again I feel this is sinking in even more.

Arcade Fire, not because it's tops on the Pitchfork list, but because the first time Jessa made me listen to it, it made me really sad and I couldn't say why, which is always a sign of a great album.
Modest Mouse. This album is so fucking underrated by indie boys. What, because there was a hit single? The thing is brilliant.

Synths and shiny production do not help Modest Mouse one bit, whose biggest strength was always the GEETARZ. Admittedly, I've only heard the entire album a few time and I wasn't paying close attention, but it seemed entirely too harmless and bland to my ears.

I understand how some people feel, but I think it's a very different band now. A different band who made a crazy good album.
