WHEN: Saturday October 2nd from 2 PM until ? (ha ha)
WHERE: Wicker Park, Chicago, n/a and Sarah's house. Email me at naamme @ yahoo dot com if you don't know where that is.
WHY: Late birthday party for Sarah McLusky and right-on-time birthday party for amateurist.
WHAT: Drinks and cookin' out. We will supply alcoholic beverages and vegetarian cookout items. It's kinda rude, but if you want nonvegetarian cookout items, we're gonna ask you to bring 'em yourself, but you can use our grill to cook them.

ALL ILXORS ARE INVITED. The regulars, obviously, but we're also lookin' at you, LEEEEE, Jeff-PTTL, and other lurkers if you can make it. Hope to see you there!

am. I think the nearest stop is actually on the Brown line. We can't give you a ride because we'll have a car full of band equipment. If you want to get to Beat Kitchen really early and go eat with me and Sarah and maybe Ben, we have to get there at 7 for soundcheck and then the show doesn't start til 9 so we'll have lots of time to kill. Plus you'll get to look cool by hanging out with the band.

It's at a fundraiser. I'm nervous mostly because I've never really DJ'd before period, but also

a) I have no idea what the mood of the crowd will be like, or even if they're supposed to be dancing while I'm playing (an e-mail I got today seemed to indicate that I might just be filling time between other acts?)

b) All I have is mp3s on a laptop, so I can't make thrillingly smooth transitions or beat-match or whatever. It will probably sound sloppy.

i think kish kash is a little spotty (OH NO). and the phoenix, i mean, it's really good, but it's even, uh, flakier than the first, which i must admit i find a little irritating.

but in both cases i've only listened two or three times, so that's not a final judgment.

I find Kish Kash very spotty as well. It's got some good stuff, sure, but I do not get the Basment Jaxx worship. I have never been able to listen to "Remedy" all the way through. I may have never en heard all of it. I just don't f'ing care.

I think the Luomo is seamless, though. Really, really lovely album. Sparkling house music shot through with melancholy.

It took me a while to warm up to Luomo. I knew Kenan liked it a lot, but it wasn't until Adam praised it recently that I went back and listened more closely. I think there's something effortless about it that made it seem not that remarkable at first. But now I really like it.

I actually wish that Phoenix record was a bit MORE silly sometimes -- and by "silly" I mean more loose, more FUN. I was listening to the first album last night and was marvelling at the sudden, weird excursions into cheesy guitar solos and hot vocoder action. Or maybe I just want more uptempo stuff like "Everything is Everything" -- sometimes Alphabetical gets a little sleepy and bland, like the new Air record.

fiery furnaces have been filed under "too weird for further comment" for the moment.

i like the luomo, it just isn't what i expected. it has more of a 1980s arthur soundtrack sensibility than i had imagined.

yeah the new phoenix is kind of sleepy musically (although beautifully recorded and mixed), and unfortunately that has the effect of focusing your attention on the lyrics, which are really much too flaky to withstand any scrutiny. i still think i like the record, though. we'll see.

See, while everyone's been all focused on the tragedy of September 11th and its aftermath, Chicago has been silently going through a just-as-epochal transformation. After that porch collapsed -- last year? -- everything changed. We all stepped up and bonded together and recognized that porch collapse was the number one danger facing our city. I'll always remember Daley standing there with a bullhorn on the wreckage of that porch, pledging to take the fight straight to where they build the porches, or the invasion of those two lumberyards soon afterward. I apologize, a little. Didn't mean to make light of either -- it just occurred to me that there was this semi-parallel, you know, a genuine tragedy sort of making everyone alert to danger all around them, or whatever. When I was living in Evanston we had a porch rail collapse at our building -- a guy I worked with was helping move a couch, the rail fell off, and he fell a couple stories into the alley. Which he probably would have survived, except the couch fell on top of him. So I was always a little wary about certain porches, and at parties would stake out a spot right next to the back door. I think the idea was that on the off chance the porch started falling I could jump back into the apartment. I was also always freaked by crappy iced-up porch stairs in winter.

Anyway I miss the porches, they're the fourth best thing about Chicago.

(xpost 2 Chris) Well, the bulk of buildings have some sort of porch or deck or back-stair structure, and a lot of them are a little old. Which is usually fine, except they tend to be where everyone gathers at parties, and eighty people on an old wood thing can be dangerous. There was a collapse last year at a partyful of DePaul kids, and that kinda sensitized everyone to the safety of their own porches. And surely gave building owners a big kick in the ass to make sure theirs were solid.

I like Junior Boys more now. I was worried it was too slick and '80's for me, but now I like it. It sounds kind of evil to me.
I have trouble getting past the vocals on the Luomo album, I guess because I'm a rockist or TOO NOIZE or something. But I really like his bass sound.
Fiery Furnaces are growing on me a little, but their music is a little too weird for the sake of weird, like just throwing a bunch of instruments together for the sake of the clatter and not for the sake of the song. This used to seem like a good idea, but now I'm getting old.
I really like the Basement Jaxx, but it's harmed by something that's not it's fault: the iPod mixes it much quieter than everything else on the same playlist, so it doesn't hit as hard. By contrast, the Junior Boys' snare sound is like a massive thunderclap. That song where they say "Delirious" a lot is pretty awesome though.
That "Forgive this Foolish Man" comp is pretty killer.
