Username vs. real name

This has probably been addressed at some point, but once you meet some ILXors in real life, is hard for you to address them by their fake ILX names on ILX? I have a really awkward time addressing things to "amateurist" or "jaymc" or whatever, but I know people don't want their real names floating around online.
I also want to take this opportunity to let everyone know that they can feel free to address me as Nick. That's my log-in name anyways, and I change my fake ILX name periodically, so for me, it makes more sense for people to just call me Nick.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

amst's real name is the coolest thing on earth.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Feel free to address me as Jordan.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

... and I am jealous.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't call cozen anything other than cozen. And I don't even think I'm saying it right.

Cathy (Cathy), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

ILXors sometimes use real names as a way to express power over someone else too, especially if their own real name is not well known.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I call gygax "gygax".

Howard Wine (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

amst's real name is the coolest thing on earth.

i am intrigued.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron is my real name. On AIM and such I refer to people by their real name if I know it, username if I don't.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know, if someone approached me with my ILX name, I'd be weirded out. A little too sexual to have to hear it all the time.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

most of you address me as "jody" or "jbr" on the boards no matter what kind of stupid username i'm sporting. which is fine, obv.

pfeffernuesse (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind being called cozen, either. it sounds kinda evil.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 8 October 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I say if the real name is in the e-mail or login name field it's fair game: Jody, Mandee, Nick etc. Everybody refers to JW by his real name no matter what name he's got this week, so there's an exception.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I kind of like being called "Begs" unless I think about it and then it CREEPS ME OUT. So I don't think about it. I am Matt to lots of people here anyway.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

You can call me John if you want.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

me too.

cºzen (Cozen), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

You can call me anytime.

Howard Wine (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so not worried about my name being googled. *sighs* Contrary to what many of you must certainly have thought, I did not invent my striking moniker, it was the inspired trouvaille of my parents.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Like anyone has taken the time to guess my REAL name.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

But there's kind of an exclusivity/cliqueness about calling people by their real names...like if I call jaymc "John" in a thread, there are going to be people who won't know who I'm talking to and who might feel some disclusion (is that a word?), which isn't something I want to encourage.

Silly boy, try harder.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't stop you from calling me Kenan, but I can try and confuse by changing usernames every week or so.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Chandler Bing?

Dan Perry '08 (Dan Perry), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the reason I never chose a username was to avoid this kinda thing.. plus I dont think I was feeling very imaginative at the time I signed onto this bitch.

still bevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

You don't have to be imaginative. Just pick a Biggie lyric. See?

Disgustingly vile. Well done.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually I think that's gonna be my name now, ha!

Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to resist the temptation to use "All I want is bitches, big booty bitches" or "beatin' motherfuckers like Ike beat Tina."

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever, KENAN.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno if I can hang with this. AaronHz is so much more economical.

Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, you're now easily confused with J.Williams.

xpost -- You all know me already. And you all already KNOW that all I want is bitches, big booty bitches. So that would just be redundant.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

You can call me Fiddy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

one of my real life nicknames is Jackson, so....

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Split the difference

Dick Booger (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:31 (twenty-one years ago)

57 7th (calstars), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If you've chosen a username different from your real name, you have the right to be called that. If you change your username regularly, you lose that right.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

good rule.

Smokin' funk by the boxes (kenan), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Does your statscock rating get fucked up if you change your name?
Fuck it I'll just stick w/AaronHz.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I like being called Greg, it makes me feel like someone who hasn't been posting into a vacuum for the last six-or-so months.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know why, but I still think you are Mandee a lot of the time.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Statscock is all based on e-mail address, innit?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

On login I thought.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 8 October 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I pretty much learnt how to, like, type by talking to Mandee, so that's not THAT surprising. I feel guilty for dilutin' the brand, though!

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

like n/a said I always assumed it was people going out of their way to be cliquey but if I knew someone on a message board irl I guess it would be kind of strange calling them a screenname so I won't feel that twinge of offense henceforth. Living and learning lalalala.

tremendoid, Friday, 8 October 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I need a screen name.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how people sometimes address me by my full name - as if there's another Spencer on that thread! It's very polite though.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Mr. Chow, I think it's very sweet of you to notice.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a hard time calling gygax by his screen name, but i know he's into annominimity (i have no idea, nor do i care, how that word is spelled)

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I got in so much trouble for using his real name somehwere, I've now forgotten it. Also, ringing bells make me drool.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax is his real name. It is an authentic american name.

Howard Wine (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 October 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Out of the ILXors I know in real life, Madchen is the one I find hardest to remember not to refer to her real name on ILX. I kind of think of Alba as being N. still, and for some reason I think of him and RJG as being called N. and RJG in my head, even though I call them by their proper names when talking to them. Same applies also to the Pinefox and Jerry the Nipper - in his previous name incarnations as well.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 8 October 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

My name is Tre Baker. I live in North Little Rock, Arkansas. I use Pleasant Plains basically in the same way that Scott Kanneberg calls himself Spiral Stairs. In other words, there is no rhyme or reason to it.

It is a way to keep you guys and real folks apart in my mind. Only someone who knows me would call me by real name. Besides, most ilxors call me Pains, which is a nickname of an imaginary name that I created and now my head will explode.

Is it okay to call Aja, "Alex", or are we still looking the other way on that one?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 8 October 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex or "Nowell."

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Friday, 8 October 2004 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Princess Wombat of Crappy Town?

Howard Wine (nordicskilla), Friday, 8 October 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

One of the true heroes of American history...Leon Czolgosz. The man who assassinated William McKinley. He was an unkown Polish emigre who happened to be an anarchist of the "propaganda by the deed" variety. If there were a hundred like him around today, they could change the world. The only political assassination of a president...well, except for Lincoln, I guess, and Kennedy, probably, but Leon was the only anarchist of the bunch. There was such a thing as belief put into action in those days. What are you doing this afternoon?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

James Garfield was assisinated so that Chester Arthur could become president. That's sorta political, too.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha, that old coot was so fulla shit. Favorite character in the film by far, though.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been thinking about this a lot lately... been feeling pretty anonymous on ILE, and I'm not sure if it's because I never posted to an "introduce yourselves" thread, or the username was dumb, or my posts have been dumb, or ILE is such a closed community. I find myself posting to other boards a lot more -- they're a little more welcoming and it's a little less daunting to be posting about slightly more specific topics. Anyway, it's time to retire "Rock Hardy." So long, Rock, don't trip and fall off any 1000-ft. cliffs.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Salut, Mr. Crump. Yer always welcome. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got wary of googlability, and of being introduced at ILX beer-guzzling extravaganzas as "Benjamin Tranquil Hills"-- totally unsuitable. And homesick for Nashville, I kinda liked dropping the name of the filthiest boulevard in Tennessee's capital. I reckoned it would be a grabby name for DJing country records, as well. Too bad someone else swiped it as an instant messenger handle.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Friday, 8 October 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Pleasant -- no trips to Tunica for me for the last couple of years — I can't afford that kind of fun. I went to the Grand in Biloxi a few years ago and a lot of money just went "poof" and disappeared, and I had a great time until I was driving home and thinking about what I could have done with it instead. So I try to steer clear of the casinos.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Saturday, 9 October 2004 07:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Most ilxors call me Jel in real life, it's okay I don't mind. If they wanna call me dude, that's okay too. No one really calls me James, and that's okay too. Only my family can call me Jim or Jamie, I hope you're okay with that.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 9 October 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The Barry thing still seems a bit weird to me. What is strangest, I think, is when ILXors who I am aware of, but have never had any personal exchanges with, call me Barry. Which is silly as it's just a persona rather than a personal nickname (you know, which only people you're close to can call you without it feeling uncomfortable). I guess maybe Barry is a stranger to me too.

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 9 October 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, can I know amateurists name now? I'm intrigued.

Towelette Pettatucci (Homosexual II), Saturday, 9 October 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Part of the reason why I've always used my real name is down to quite how lame it would sound walking into a pub and having to introduce myself as Charlie Busted's Sweaty T-Shirt or something. I was thinking long-term.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 9 October 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Or possible Florence.

This is odd to me. The name started because you said you wanted a new internet nickname. Someone (stevem?) suggested Barry Lasagne. You said no. Everyone else liked it and used it anyway. I mean, most nicknames aren't started with the permission of the person concerned. I think you're the only one who treats it as an Mr Hyde-type alter ego.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I get called "diamond dick".

RJG (RJG), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Your mother's pet names for you don't count.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that how it came about? I totally love that Markelby is called "Barry Lasange".

Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It was actually Coastaltown Matt, not stevem. Sorry, Matt.

That defining moment

Alba (Alba), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

One the one hand, yes, anyone starting a thread entitled Internet Hardman requires new moniker gets what they deserve. On the other hand, it's not him who says "oooh, Barry's in a bad mood" when he goes on one of his patented mentalist marauds.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 11 October 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but people don't only call him Barry when he gets angry.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't call him Barry only when he gets angry, rather.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd somehow got the impression that Barry was your real name! I only used it b/c I saw other people using it as well!! (yes yes, would you jump off a cliff if you saw other people doing it as well yes probably)+

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 07:27 (twenty-one years ago)

He wasn't "Barry" before then? Hunh.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Some ppl use my real name on ILX but that only tends to be ppl I have met irl or that I converse with via email. I really don't mind aslong as they don't use my last name on here. Then again, i quite like 'Pink' & I don't really mind if ppl call me that irl. It amuses me that a lot of ppl think I am male because of 'Pinkpanther', I seem to recall Vic thinking I was a gay guy!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 07:47 (twenty-one years ago)

A little more background to the birth of Barry Lasagne

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

They do more than they don't, Nick (and not just because he is more than he isn't). Other people are asked if they're feeling a bit Barry, and it doesn't appear that they're being called bald, or suggesting that they've got an unpronouncable last name. Barry Lasange is different from Mark C, unlike (as far as I'm aware) me & YMOF, or Chris & Cabbage.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 07:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Rereading that thread has reminded me that ILE is at its best when we all get bitterly and childishly divided over something completely trivial.

Barry Lasagne started as a nickname but has now morphed into a persona in itself, as evidenced in, say, bundling young Julio out of the Harrow last November.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 07:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you mean that he sometimes attends FAPs in character? Blimey.

In the past I have toyed with the idea of coming to FAPs and "being" Denise Lambert or Chingford Tor Ascender all evening, but realised that this was probably not a wise thing to try.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You might be right, "Donnie"

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always used my real name on here, and almost never do any of that post-specific name/email change for comedic effect. I figure that is best left to Ally/TOMBOT/StarrySarah/etc.

I do get a little annoyed with the amount of username changing that goes on. I guess I don't pay attention to email addresses enough, since when I first see a wacky new handle, I think it is a new incarnation of JW. I just like to keep it real, ka know? I'm not that worried about Googlability of my name since it is fairly common. Plus, I think a lot of you are scared of THE MAN catching you or something...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ILXors sometimes use real names as a way to express power over someone else too, especially if their own real name is not well known.

Oooooh, talky-meat! That's why you so weak! Everyone is knowing your name! We loved her first!

Catty (Catty), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 09:29 (twenty-one years ago)

My name is wild.

Hello wild

Freelance Hiveminder (blueski), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to work with a gal who's surname was Wild.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind being called 'Martin Skidmore'. The odd one here is, as I have said before, Michael Jones - he posts under his real name, but in person everyone refers to him by a nickname. I try to make myself use people's usernames here, partly because it's what they have chosen to call themselves here, and partly because it is clearer for people who don't know any other name for them. I don't think I forget too often.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Considering there aren't likely to be an enormous number of Martin Skidmores in the world I'm still pretty impressed that you've said as much under your real Googleable name as you actually have.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Gah, I'm annoyed my old log-on got lost cos now I can't just be Sarah anymore. Loadsa people know/knew me as Starry anyway tho so I cannot say it is that much of a hemhem sea change...

Starry (hello chickens), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely for that, you'd have to have changed to Scarah?

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Just had an epiphany: there should be a rule that at any time, Andrew or the moderators can "freeze" the names being used, and after that, people are stuck with the name they are currently using. The threat that one might be forced to always use the name one is currently using would result in a lot more thought being put into name choices.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever. A name ain't nothin' but a number.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 12 October 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no shame, Matt - or at least not for anything I've admitted to on here.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

My rule is comparable to the old adage: "If you keep making that face, one day it will freeze that way."

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Only if I were listening to the introductory minutes of Ray's A Laugh: "Come and meet Ted Ray/He'll chase your troubles a-wayyyy."

Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo?

When I talk to people besides Ken C, I say "Ken C." I can't imagine ever calling Dog Latin anything besides Dog Latin (and he is listed in my address book that way.) I think I said this upthread, but Gear! will always be Gear! whether I eventually meet him or not.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)
