This actually came up in conversation at the Biggest FAP Ever back in February. The only way I can actually think of coordinating this is by getting as many people to London or NYC as possible in one weekend. A real neutral location would be amazing fun but kind of difficult.

Well, I'll be in the UK and Europe in general in July 2005 -- funny thing is that H., over in Addis Adaba, happened to mention being over on the East Coast this summer as well, and Luna, Casuistry and I were all trying to plot to be there for an H FAP. Since I think there's no more 'remote' regular on ILX than H, with the exception of Mitch -- and he's been at an NYC FAP! -- why don't we plan around a NY/East Coast celebratory FAP around that?

honestly if we were to all do this it requires something BESIDES ILX for people to show up en masse. Nobody but really sad mentalists goes to a city just to meet other mentalists. So butthole towns in the middle of nowhere aren't cool. We need a metropolis, ILX being a metropolitan cosmoblog in and of itself. The biggest trouble with a global FAP as opposed to Tom's Wedding or the J4 NYC shindig is the south of the equator contingent. Therefore, as the weakest link in the affordable-airfare chain, they should have first go. I don't imagine anybody would seriously pick a place other than NYC or London, so there you have it.

Barf on the NYC. I mean, it's great and all (really!), but if you're going to try and herd kittens, you may as well do it right. Or, rather:

(1) Is the point of the WorldFAP to mold the ILXors of the world into a critical mass and see what kind of bat-shit happens?

(2) ...or is it to provide an excuse for a great many ILXors to go on a genteel vacation, to which the FAP is just an entertaining sideshow?

To have it in a ho-hum* destination like NYC or London is to assume that the whole thing will be a polite little cocktail party from which the Locals can return home at a reasonable hour without too much fuss or muss.

And there's nothing wrong with that.

However, if you really want to make it interesting it should be on the most neutral territory conceivable. No one should be on their home turf. Home turf is for babies and puppies! Neutral turf is like a cage match! There's nowhere to hide! Anything can happen!

I'm with Dan: Wisconsin Dells. Beer, cheese-hats, waterslides and all-american fun.

Or: VEGAS. Vegas is, of course, the Awfullest City in the Universe, but it's not without it's charm; all those ILXors that wanted New York can get it right there! Twice!

Meet people and do... what? As much as a small minority (myself included) might want to go off into the wilderness, there are a lot of people here who would never participate. I don't think you could find consensus (if you can find consensus at all) on anything other than a major city, or a minor one with disproportionate cultural appeal. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Yes, NYC and London and perhaps another place or two would fall victim to the problems you identify. But if it were really desired to avoid those problems, there are other good options, including several already mentioned. Montreal - where I've never been - seems to me to fit the bill pretty well. Though neutral need not mean, I don't know, Canadian.

It would have to happen over a long weekend that is simultaneously a bank holiday and an American federal government holiday. Vegas really makes sense if you think about it. No one lives there, so everyone's at least to some extent out of their element. There's lots of stuff to do, and it's nightlife focused, but there's little real history/activity that would distract from the sociability, and the awfulness might encourage it. It's tourist-oriented, so wouldn't be too expensive. And little chance of bad weather. For those looking for outdoor activities, you're not far from awesomeness. And if there's too much Vegas, the art deco/roadside strip side would sate some cultural interest.

I think the best way to settle a place for this is to determine which ILXor has the largest/house apartment, and we could all stay at his/her place. Like a pyjama party!

Unfortunately it isn't me: at the moment I could accomodate only 1-2 people. But if you all want to stay in hotels in Helsinki, I could certainly host a world fap.

Anyway, regardless of where we'd stay, it would be so cool if we could actually arrange this thing. How about next winter? Or summer 2011?
