When can we have another Chicago thread?

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 25 December 2004 03:47 (twenty years ago)

Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once I built a tower, up to the sun,
brick and rivet and lime.
Once I built a tower, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, gee, we looked swell
Full of that Yankee Doodle-de-dum.
Half a million boots went slogging through hell,
And I was the kid with the drum.

Say, don't you remember they called me Al,
It was Al all the time.
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal --
Say, buddy, can you spare a dime?

Once in khaki suits, ah, gee, we looked swell
Full of that Yankee Doodle-de-dum.
Half a million boots went slogging through hell,
And I was the kid with the drum.

Say, don't you remember they called me Al,
It was Al all the time.
Why don't you remember, I'm your pal --
Buddy, can you spare a dime?

I miss Chicago.

Jeff in Delaware, Sunday, 26 December 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago)

but you can get yummy crabs and oysters in delaware, no?

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 26 December 2004 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Jocelyn -- Paprikash was good but not great. The sour cherry soup and fried bread appetizers were fantastic, but I was disappointed with my potato pancake with lecso. I wouldn't discourage you from going, though: my dining companions seemed to like their dishes just fine, and it does have a nice homey Eastern European ambience.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 26 December 2004 23:21 (twenty years ago)

I am so happy to be back, I can't stand it. You try doing Christmas shopping in rural Kansas sometime. Just try it. Try, in fact, to find anything to do besides watch TV and drink heavily.

Kansas pics coming soon.

Kenan, We need to give your keys back to you. By the way, your mean kitty (we forgot to learn their names) actually sat on the rug in front of us, soaking up the sun and not growling at us for about 15 minutes straight!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 December 2004 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I would love some oysters, but so far all I've eaten is scrapple.

I'm coming back on Tuesday! Post holiday FAP anyone?

Jeff in Delaware, Monday, 27 December 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

We're thinking about going to the New Years Eve thing at the Empty Bottle: 90 Day Men, Ponys, Pit er Pat. I've only ever seen the Ponys but they're pretty fun live. But I read that the keyboard player/second guitarist dude is leaving the band and he does all the cool shit anyways so I think they will suck soon.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 December 2004 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Ian is leaving the Ponys??? Two interesting facts: (a) his old band, Happy Supply, used to be my favorite thing in the world, to the point where I briefly stole their singer to work on stuff with me; plus (b) he is missing half a finger on his left hand, and I'm still not sure how he plays guitar the way he does.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the little blurb in the Reader about that show said that he is leaving. I like his singing voice (very Jad Fair) way better than the main dude's voice (very Joey Ramone), and in general he's the most interesting thing about the band.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 December 2004 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Kenan, that looks like fun to me, man.

Hey, guys. Some dude in Chicago is selling his indie rock cd collection. I just found it in the reader ( http://chicago.craigslist.org/for/53353357.html
)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 December 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I don't think I want any of those cds.

I AM BORED.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 27 December 2004 20:50 (twenty years ago)

It's an interesting idea though and a funny list.

I AM BORED x 10. I just went through my 2005 calendar marking off the holidays. ha ha

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 27 December 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Okay so umm for various reasons it turned out that I spent Christmas here in New York, kind of broke and doing basically nothing. Which was cool and all, but just a tad boring. So I decided to amuse myself by trying to write and record five songs all on Christmas itself, from around noon to midnight. And then I did just that, though the word “song” might be a bit much for some of the sketchier ones—really more like just two-minute synth tones. Anyway, here they are. I think #4 and #1 came out sounding best, but my favorite part is the beginning of #2. I think #5 might be interesting if you were really, really stoned. The last one is a bonus-type non-Christmas song that actually received sustained attention, at one point or another. So probably that's the good one. This is your gift: crappy pop music! Cheers!

Well after dark, about 10. Orange city glow + long exposure.

I made it home safe and warm. Thanks for your help. And Nick, thanks for working two blocks away from me.

Eh I feel bad about that whole thing. Sorry you had to go to all that trouble. And sorry if I was acting weird when you were at my office, it was one of those "this person is out of context" disconnect moments.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

I bet it was. You were acting as weird as I expected. You have nothing to be sorry about, also... Jessa was bugging me last night to go get my keys because she wouldn't be around all day today, but I am teh lazy.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:29 (twenty years ago)

You were acting as weird as I expected.

Ha ha, what does that mean?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:30 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I showed up at your office unannounced, which is weird already. If you were acting weird, it's only because I was.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:34 (twenty years ago)

Now I can celebrate, though, as I started to when I realized nobody was at my office, and before I realized I didn't have any house keys.

Woohoo! Unexpected day off!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago)

Has anyone else eaten at West Town Tavern? We ate there last night, and good sweet lord it was good. A little pricey, just under $20 a plate, but the last time I had food this good I paid twice that. The menu is labelled by whatever the main ingredient in the dish is, so it's just "I'll have the duck" or some equivalent. I had the lamb, with mashed potatoes and watercress over this sweet corn cake. It was fucking heaven. It was one of those meals that makes life worth living.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Who's up for an ILE poker night?

I just got a poker chip set in the mail, a nice heavy one, but I don't know where it came from. If it was from a thoughtless relative I'd probably just stick it in the closet, but since it's from someone I don't know at all, and since I can't imagine why anyone would send me such a thing anonymously, it would be an insult to the great beyond to stash it away. I have to use it. My mysterious poker chip set.

It'll be fun! I'll pass out funny hats and cigars!

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Umm, I can try, I'm pretty unfamiliar with poker beyond the basics. I've watched it on TV a few times.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago)

We'll all be in the same boat, then.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Oh, wait. My mom sent it. It was a thoughtless relative after all. Even so, this gift is too weird to ignore. Am I known for liking poker? Have I even ever used the word "poker" in front of my mother? It must have been very, very on sale.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago)

does anyone have any idea about how many people the ice factory can hold? im thinking about trying to have a big party in chicago in the spring

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, I'm bad at estimating stuff like that, but it's not that big. Maybe like 200?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:21 (twenty years ago)

200 is a big damn party, though.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Not for phil. Did you read his NYC Halloween party thread?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago)

oh, ugh. do you know of any big warehouse'y sort of spots that the po-po wouldn't come shut down that can hold maybe 400-500?

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:24 (twenty years ago)

or maybe im overestimating the number of partypeople in chicago, i dunno

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Dude, rent a cruise ship on Lake Michigan! All night, debauchery, gambling, no cops guaranteed. I'd pay a thick cover for that.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm not hip enough to know shit like that. But Ice Factory is definitely WAY too small for that many people.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago)

i was thinking of, for some extra money and fun, flying a couple of friends (or maybe roadtrip) who can sort of draw crowds over to chicago and have a big dance party and charge money and stuff.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 19:28 (twenty years ago)

wait you expect people to pay money to meet your cool friends? i'm confused.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago)

Maybe they are professional dancers or electronic artists.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:46 (twenty years ago)

I have been known to draw crowds, Phil. They kind of point and then turn their heads away, filled with horror and pity.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 28 December 2004 20:52 (twenty years ago)

"professional dancers"...sarah, is this a euphemism?

I'm down with poker night.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the more I think about it, so am I. And the more I think about it, the more my mom's weird poker gift goes along perfectly with my dad's gift of awesome kitschy martini glasses, a drink shaker, and an ice bucket. This was meant to be.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 04:41 (twenty years ago)

*** ATTENTION, NEW YEARS NEWS!!! ***

Due to our plans to go to the Ponys/90 Day Men show on New Years Eve falling through (it sold out), Sarah and I, along with her friend Sarah who some of you met at my birthday b-b-q and possibly Ben, are just going to hang out at our house, drink, listen to loud music, and maybe watch some DVDs or something. If there's anyone else out there who has no plans (though I know most of you do), you're certainly welcome to come hang out with us 'chez nous.' Peace out.

To all (x-post):

Even if you have plans you could drop by, just so you can tell your friends at the other New Years party that you are really busy having to drop in on other friends on this special night (because you have so many).

Anyway, there will be alcohol and music. The usual...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Kenan, If you want, we can charge a huge cover so it will seem like more of a big To Do.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

When the other party gets dull, and they always do, I'll try and drop by your place.

It's because New Years Day (the traditional holiday) falls on a Saturday.

I don't think it's a "Chicago thing" if that's what you're implying.

No, I wasn't implying that. I'm just jealous.

I sometimes confuse them with DAISY CHAINSAW, who sounded a bit like Silverfish but had album covers like this

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 20:10 (twenty years ago)

I would have posted a full outfit but she had this thing about dresses that split open around the ribs and then just tattered emptily around, and while they're theoretically safe for work (and not "sexy" in any traditional prurient way) they probably don't look so fantastic over an employee's shoulder.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Also they had the best band schtick ever: they attacked each other on stage!

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago)

I still have a soft spot for "Love Your Money". Great video, too.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 December 2004 20:25 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if I'd go so far to call them "the shit", but I have issues with many early-90s UK indie bands, so that's my burden.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 December 2004 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Calling them "the shit" is dependent upon my not remembering anything of theirs other than "Love Your Money." Though I did listen to their first album last year, for some reason, and if I remember correctly I was pleasantly surprised by the rest of it.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 30 December 2004 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Quick plug: The Fake Fictions are playing at Subterranean this Thursday, Jan. 6th with a couple of bands we know little about (the Interiors, who sound indie, and the Elevens, who supposedly sound like Throwing Muses, so also indie). We are playing last, so at like 11 I think but you know our set is short. I think it costs like $5, but if you want to come and really can't afford it, just let us know and we'll put you on the guest list. If you could make it out, we'd love to see you there.

what kind of party, phil? None of those places will hold 500 people, or even 200. If you want to throw a regular-human-sized party, my vote goes with Sonotheque or Rodan, buth very nice in a swank-but-not-kitsch way. Though I haven't been to Sound Bar.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Sonotheque and Rodan are both very stylish but not off-putting at all. And as Kenan noted, they are small. (Rodan is actually a restaurant that sort of turns into more of a cocktail/DJ-ish place late at night. But Mouse on Mars played an after-party there, so who knows.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Well, this thing probably wouldn't too big. It would be a Fannypack vs. DFA Records DJ Battle. Cat (Fannypack) and Tim (DFA) and, um maybe me.. We'll be Dj'ing, maybe get a local DJ too. Though I'll probably not use the word Battle, since Tim is a great DJ, and Cat can mix just about as well I can, which is to say not at all. Basically, it'll be a dance party. And will be really fun, yaaay. The thing is, I have to find a venue that will give us a good deal, since It'll cost me a lot more to come to Chicago than it would to go to Detroit or Buffalo. But then again, we could just stay with my parents instead of a hotel, and have them cook us Korean food. So I think a couple hundred people would be good? Unless you think either nobody would come (then we can do it at that rodan or dannys place?) or a TON of people will come. I have no idea!! Help!

(um, was jordan always this hot and i didnt notice?)

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 4 January 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Is anyone else pumped about the new non-cable TV station in Chicago called MeTV that is like Nick at Nite all day long and it's free? It's like channel 74 at our house. So far I've seen the Mary Tyler Moore show, Starsky & Hutch, the A-Team, Sanford & Son, the Jeffersons, the Twilight Zone, Mork and Mindy, and (the one I'm personally most excited about) the Bob Newhart Show. Awesome.

Phil-two,
it seems like more of a Sonotheque event you are looking for. I've never been to a dj thing at Rodan. It's a nice room, but I can't imagine people dancing there.
if you are interested in doing something at Danny's, you'll probably want to talk to Kevin Stacy, one of the managers and the guy who handles music booking.

robots in love (robotsinlove), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Cool, thanks. I sent off an email to sonotheque - hope they're interested. this would be on the sunday before presidents day, and was looking to get cat and myself another gig in the week, maybe tuesday or something. are you back in town ?

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

No, Channel 26 is WCIU (aka "The U"), home of Elimidate and Pyramid with Donny Osmond and Millionaire with that guy who's not that old British bird and some Pat O'Brien celebrity-gossip show of some sort (I know because his smarmy mug is always staring at me from billboards).

Wait: what's Channel 28? I know it's MTV2 after midnight, but maybe they've got Korean programming during the day. Maybe Ch. 23 used to be Chinese. Fuck, I have no idea.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

the korean sword/horsey show is subtitled now, so you can follow quite easily the court intrigue of prince jae-wook and pals. its actually pretty fun. but yeah, i'll definitely let you know when everything is settled. the sonotheque guy hasn't written back yet, but i don't think they would ignore/pass up this lineup. i hope. you know, if you want to see cat that badly, all you have to do is take the F train down to orchard street!

When I was on vacation in Italy my friend and I wasted time trying to figure out a soap that seemed to be a combination of the above plus vampires and lots of virile hair tossing that seemed to mean "come to my bed right away."

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

As much as I'd love people to come see the Fake Fictions play at Subterranean tonight, I feel obliged to say that I'm not that excited about it. One of the bands that was playing (who sounded kind of lame from their description to start with) dropped out, and was replaced with a band that sounds even lamer ("mod and prog-influenced rock"). Also we're playing last (though I'm gonna push hard to be moved to second) and so we'll be tired. And moving stuff in the snow...ehhh. Sorry, I'm lame, and we are going to try to rock as hard as we possibly can.
But in other news, we're playing at Ice Factory on the 21st now with Nueva Cats, everyone should come to that because Ice Factory is FUNNNNN!!!
Other Chicago-related notes: where do people go sledding around here? There are no hills!
How much snow does it take for work to close?
It would be fun to have a FAP/get-together at Hideout, except that you can't get to it without a car. But maybe we should try.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Sorry for show-related griping, I know it's unprofessional, but I would feel bad if people trekked out in all this snow expecting an awesome show and got two hours of prog and then a sleepy FF set.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 January 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

there really are very few hills. i'm like 30 min out from the city but on a clear day, you can see the sears tower from the ogden bridge over 294, which is not even high up in any way whatsoever, but shows how flat everything is.

i'm not sure that sentence made any sense but that's not necessary for ilx anyway, right?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 6 January 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Let's have a sledding FAP in Wisconsin.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

There's a giant hill beside the lake shore bike path, sort of near montrose I think. During the summer I would ride my bike up and down it.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

I would like to come to see FFs again soon, but prob. not tonight because a) I'm tired, and b) I am determined not to drive until all this mess clears up (and it'd be a hassle to take public transport).

BUT...

we're playing at Ice Factory on the 21st now with Nueva Cats

Yay! That's my friends Jody and Jorin. They just started playing music together, so I've never even heard them before. I think it borrows a page from the Petrified Forest and is just guitar/bass/drum machine. I have a feeling it will be very lo-fi and cute.

The Hideout is nice. We should def. go there some time.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

This morning I woke up and thought about Chicago. I had a few pictures that I took (including some from Jaymc's neighborhhood at 6:30am!!!), but my camera broke.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Adam, this morning I was half-asleep on the train and I dreamt that you were telling people about Sideways and how "it's a carnival to see how us men are portrayed."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Hahahahahaha! I only wish I talked like that.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

I still aim to try.

Still, that is wonderful! Thank you for sharing it.

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

We might be coming back in a few months to celebrate the birth of a baby! (not ours, obv.)

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

You're welcome. (That would be nice!)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Still, I hope you are not pegging me as "the Sideways guy". I enjoyed it well enough, but...

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh no no, I liked it quite a bit, too. As far as I know, your actual feelings about the film had nothing to do with the dream.

By the way, it took me a while, but I finally listened to your mix CD and very much enjoyed it. I think my favorite tracks are the Michael Mayer and Rex the Dog ones.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I see the FFs will be back at the Slipper Club this month.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Good!

xpost

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

The other morning I had a dream that everyone had decided that "John Cunningh@m is the real president elect of the USA" and they (the huddled masses) were all being interviewed on the street and arguing with newscasters about this fact.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Who's John Cunningham?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

I would be a terrible president!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

(That shd answer yr question, Jordan)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of the Slipper Club: Nick + Sarah, what are the Dials like? We're playing with them at Schuba's soon.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Their guitarist is hot.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

is this like a regional TITTWIS?

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

extra-regional!

.adam (nordicskilla), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I guess it's like the Aussie/NZ or the Glasgow threads. I'm not sure why this one has taken off like it has, tho.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

The Dials are all really friendly and cute. Keyboards, guitars, and backups - oh my!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 January 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

The Dials are very good and loud and fun. Kind of in the Saraha Hotnights-ish vein, I guess. Our drummer Ben has a big crush on the guitarist too, and she's really nice too, she talked to us for a long time about shows and venues and stuff.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 January 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm kind of looking forward to the show tonight because sometimes the shows that don't really matter are the most relaxed and fun.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure why this one has taken off like it has, tho.

Because we all LOVE to hear ourselves talk.

Oh right!!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Now I'm kind of looking forward to the show tonight because sometimes the shows that don't really matter are the most relaxed and fun.

Oddly enough, I'm the total opposite.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I seem to participate in the regional threads, in regions where I do not live.

It's because I'm a WANNABE.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think we've talked about that before, jaymc.

The show at the end of Jan. at the Slipper Club will be fun because we know and like both the bands we are playing with (Ric-Rac Attack and Telanovela) and because the Slipper CLub is AWESOME.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

How to get to the Hideout without a car = North Avenue bus, dude! Or walk, on a halfway-pleasant day. Though you might have to stop at the Hollywood for a warmup along the way. Alternately: become a hooker.

I wanna see Chicago, Phil, not Cat. I'm totally over her.

nabiscothingy, Thursday, 6 January 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Ric-Rac Attack and Telanovela

Do these bands have cute guitarists?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

YES!!!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 January 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

where is the ice factory??? is it really an ice factory??? because that would be cool. i've always wondered how they make ice.

i'm still too sick and grumpy to see you guys this weekend, but the 21st sounds good.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 7 January 2005 00:16 (twenty years ago)

The Ice Factory is at like Ashland and Grand IIRC. It is not now nor never was an ice factory, they call it that because the word "ICE" was painted on the outside of the building for some reason. It looks more like an old mechanics garage to me. But if you would like to learn more about how ice is made, I suggest the powerful and educational documentary "The Mosquito Coast."

The show last night was actually pretty fun. The other bands were lame, as predicted, but we played surprisingly well (we usually get uncomfortable when playing places with monitors and fancy sound systems and such) and a few people we know showed up. We got paid $9.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 7 January 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Morning, yins.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 January 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

uh, wrong thread but that's okay.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 January 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Why are you grumpy, Am?

Dream I had last night:

Amateurist invited us all to go to his new gf's apartment to hang out. We're supposed to meet up with him there.

So, we all go there and she lives in this dorm room. She's really cute and friendly and she's playing records for us. Am is late.

So, then this guy in her dorm building knocks on the door and says, "Hey, this guy named J is outside. Should I let him in?"

She smiles and says, "No."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah."

So the rest of us figure she's just yanking your chain and will let you in soon. But she doesn't.

Then these other guys in her building find out what she did and they think it's awful. So the next time she opens her door, it's 5 guys all mooning us at once. So she shuts it again. But as she's shutting the door, I see that Am is actually out in the hallway crying. So I feel really guilty as a co-conspirator and decide to go out in the hall to say hi.

But then the door to the room beside hers opens up and out walks this really hunky looking black man with dreads and glasses. It turns out he's Am's ex-boyfriend and they're really glad to see each other so they hug and smile and leave the building together.

And so I walk back into this girl's dorm room and I say, "That was a really cruddy thing you did to Am."

And everyone says, "Hey, Sarah, lay off. He's happy now and that's what important."

And I say, "B-b-but..."

And everyone says, "Get over it, Sarah. It all turned out well in the end."

THE END

HEY $3.00 FOR EACH OF YOU!

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 7 January 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I want to hear more about the lame mod-prog band.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

Aw, they were just some really really young guys doing their thing (which involved a piano and a flute). One of the guy's parents came to the show. Afterwards, the mom told me I did very well up there and the dad said, "You guys have great beats. I really dig your beats."

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Was it jazz flute?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

HOT BEATS

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

My mom's going to come to the second show in Chicago next month.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Awesome.

I wish you could have all seen this dad. He had an earring and silver hair. Each time he said beats he kind of raised one eyebrow, as if to say, "I'm on the level."

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

"beats"

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Morning, yins.

is there a pittsburgh thread that i haven't seen?

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

jazz flute...oh ron burgandy you devil.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 7 January 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

Btw, I'll be sneaking ever closer to y'all this weekend since Mama Digdown's has gigs in Milwaukee and Kenosha, only to turn and flee before the Illinois border.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

My Spanish is rusty, so this is what Babelfish tells me it says:

"Entre the Rondelles and a Crabs punkies" Songs pop, pegadizas, short, gone off key, amused to the purest style of indiepop. These boys of Chicago have to disposition our their first demo in their page Web. Five estúpendos subjects that they do not have lose. Recommendable.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

AWESOME

short, gone off key, amused to the purest style of indiepop

This should be at the top of your website.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

these "boys"?

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

"chicos"

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Recommendable!

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Nice!

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I think since "chicos" is plural, though, it can actually also mean any mixed group of boys and girls.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

ah ha.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, I just realized why you kept saying beats, because you're JORDAN HOTBEATS, duh.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:46 (twenty years ago)

Jordan Hotbeets.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

from my own rusty spanish:

songs that are pop, sticky, short, off-tune, diversionary/entertaining in the most pure style of indiepop. these kids from chicago ... their first demo on their web page. five stupendous themes that they never lose throughout. recommendable.

that's not really different from what jaymc said. i don't get the tener a/disposicion bit though, hence the ...

grr a friend of mine stole my big spanish dictionary.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Oh no, you've discovered my secret persona!

But then, that is only my alias because I like hot beats. It's a chicken-or-the-egg thing.

(btw, I don't think you guys are off-tune)

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah, neither do i, but then nor do i think that they have to our disposition. not that i know what that means. that's going to bug me.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Friday, 7 January 2005 16:57 (twenty years ago)

Hey guys, R0g3r 3b3rt's address is in our database! I just saw it!

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Is he still living on Lincoln Park West?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

"Fullerton Parkway"

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Interesting. I asked about Lincoln Park West because in the Chicago phone book there is a listing for an "R Ebert" there. Also I saw him give a lecture about The Wizard of Oz in which he said that he lived close to Oz Park, which is right around there. Fullerton is right around there, too.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

Is this a desirable address?

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

It's kinda tony, yeah. It's in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

One would assume that Ebert does not live in Pilsen.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:32 (twenty years ago)

It's right here, actually. About as pretty a big-city neighborhood as Chicago has. Very much like Central Park West.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Ahhh.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 7 January 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

So I'm sitting in my favorite little diner waiting for my lunch and reading the latest Onion. In it is this ad for a place called Chicago Steak House. It is a picture of a naked woman, her back to the camera. She is drawn on in thick black marker – divided into cuts of meat. “Shoulder.” “Round.” “Rump.” Under this, the ad says, “All animals are made of the same parts.”

My question: WHAT. THE. FUCK.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Haven't you seen that before?

.adam (nordicskilla), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Nope. And I was horrified.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it's a steak house for serial killers?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Or PETA members?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Or non-gay German sex cannibals?

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Apart from whatever brazenly sexist or cannibalistic subtext the ad might have, I don't even understand the main idea of it. What are they trying to say?

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

MEAT IS SEXY

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

ugh. I guess. Pass the salad.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

That pic was in The Sexual Politics of Meat which I read in college, but I assumed it was just an old cartoon or something.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 7 January 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

i kept clicking on that "sexual politics of meat" thinking it was a link and cursing at my browser, but its only underlined!

That pic was in The Sexual Politics of Meat which I read in college

haha So someone saw that picture, competely missed its ironic intent, and thought it would make a good ad for a steakhouse? That's funny, in a drooling moron kinda way.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 7 January 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I'm subtly pushing for a non-bar activity since we were at Subterranean most of last night, but if others want to go to a bar, I can deal with that.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

Eh, we all feel like we might be getting sick, it's cool. I thought I had the flu yesterday. Well, if you want to drop by or do something after Sultan's Market, you can. Give us a call.

Nevermind, I'm thinking of the Lucia Pamela song, which anyway is something like "I'm so full of ideas."

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

And this is a good one.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Other alternate plans in my future tonight may be going to the B. Kitchen to celebrate Priesty's b-day.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 7 January 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

you guys are making me sad. now I don't want to have a dinner and a movie date.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Come up to Milwaukee. There will be hot tunes and we can get gyros at 3 a.m.. Maybe they'll have veggie gyros.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

where the hell did kirsten k. go?

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

i went to go visit her in milwaukee once. it was fun.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Good question!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 7 January 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

i gots plans tonight, but if you guys wanna see a movie or something maybe tomorrow or later in the week.... i'm actually going to be living around the corner from n.a. and sarah for two weeks starting tomorrow!

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 8 January 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

WOW! An Amateurist right around the corner, how convenient! You should give us a call.

Don't worry, we didn't really do anything last night. I stalked jaymc and "ran into" him and his friends at Sultan's Market (really I just started thinking about falafel and it sounded really really good (and it tasted really really good too)) and then Sarah and I watched Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.

We might be up for something tonight maybe, though Sarah is going to try and make me take her to IKEA today, which will leave me feeling drained and irritable.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 8 January 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Hi. Kenan, I tried to call you but I guess your phone still doesn't work.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 8 January 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Uh-oh. Are you back from IKEA?

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

No one comes back from IKEA. At least not as the same person.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 9 January 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Hey, guys. We managed to get out of Ikea only buying: a black frame for a show poster, a bath mat, some baskets, and a light for Nick's side of the bed. We saw Mr. Pears' lady friend there, so that was exciting.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 10 January 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

n.a. check your email :-]

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 10 January 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

My lady friend came back with more shelves for the kitchen and a wall's worth of bookshelves for the bedroom. Good choices all. The bookcases are especially nice... three of them, in a row, along the wall of the bedroom gives it more of a library feel and less of a "Bless this mess" feel. It's funny... books I'd never have considered reading before because they were in unsightly stacks on the floor suddenly look very inviting. Add to this the track lighting, a single bulb shining down on the bookshelves, and it's very nice indeed.

IKEA is great, and I don't want anyone saying any different.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 10 January 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I actually like Ikea, the store, but I fucking fucking HATE trying to fucking find the fucking place. It literally took an hour from when we exited off the highway to when we got to Ikea. The Mapquest directions took us in the exact OPPOSITE direction from where it was. And then Ikea is so huge and crowded it gives me a headache.

Sorry I'm not posting much, dudes, my work is cracking down on internet usage and I'm pretty busy anyways. We should all hang out soon though.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Is there still only one IKEA in the Chicago area? I thought they were building another one or two...I still have very little furniture in my apartment.

I need a new futon frame, but most I've seen are pretty ugly. I also need a few tables & shelves, and an area rug. I guess I'll just buy one thing with every paycheck. I love, love, love my highrise apartment, small as it is, but it really needs furnishing!

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 January 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

Also, has anyone been to The Container Store? I love that place.

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

They're opening a new Ikea in Bolingbrook sometime this year.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

I wish they would open stores like Ikea in the city, and give up the idea that every Ikea location needs to be fourteen million square feet in order to count. Why not a couple Target-sized Ikeas here and there?

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Cause it would uber-compress itself and the giant crowded fear-making third-world funhouse-funnel of the suburban IKEA would collapse into a single ultra-dense black home-furnishing hole of despair!

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

The worst thing about the funhouse-funnel is that walking space is limited, and so you get problems between people who have just arrived and are strolling slowly gawking at everything and people who have been there all fucking day and just want to get the damn rug from three hours ago and get it downstairs and go home and die; that IKEA and the Times Square subway interchange at rush hour are the only places on earth I've ever wanted to just brain random strangers for wandering by all bovine and space-filling.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

I don't see why they can't just build up and not out, as far as the city is concerned. But I guess they're kind of anal and always do things the same way.

k3rry (dymaxia), Monday, 10 January 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

All their stores come from the factory with pre-drilled holes, obv.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 10 January 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

They're opening a new Ikea in Bolingbrook sometime this year.

I know, it's weird, it's like a mile away from the house I grew up in.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

I just saw someone on the steps who looked just like you, complete with headphones connected to iPod and brown corduroys. It was odd.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Monday, 10 January 2005 21:10 (twenty years ago)

anyone possibly up for something on thursday night?

t0dd swiss, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

There's a show at Subterranean on Thurs that I kind of feel like I have to go to because it's two bands that have invited us to play shows with them at various times but I haven't heard at all and another band that someone told me was good. But I don't know.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

That was so totally mean of J! I'm just on an extended distraction from Chicago. I still have the brown cords and over-large jacket of home.

nabiscothingy, Tuesday, 11 January 2005 05:08 (twenty years ago)

I have band practice on Thursday, suXor. Lately I have been feeling like I'm forced to decide between being an ARTIST and a CRITIC. Oh no. I think I should sleep on this, though, since it's almost 3:30 in the fucking morning, and that's what time I stayed up 'til last night, too, and it's all the BAND's fault.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, why don't you just be an "ARTIST/CRITIC" and have the best of both worlds? You'll be just like DeRogatis! Tee hee.

I'm wearing brown cords RIGHT NOW.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm still wearing brown cords. Mmm, Chicagoey.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 11 January 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

Blue jeans and a green GAP SWEATER.

I don't know why I was so troubled by that artist vs. critic thing last night. I blame sleep deprivation. Also: hstencil.

K-town: I'm meeting my mom for dinner tonight at Flo. If it's bad, I'm gonna kick your ass to the curb.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 13 January 2005 06:52 (twenty years ago)

is the cute ID-checker at the door still working at club foot? the one that looks like a librarian, and has glasses, and a vespa, and a fucking wedding band on?

i liked that place until once i went there for some ladytron album release party (for light & magic) that i think only me and my friend showed up for, which was nice because then there were lots of promo goodies lying around that no one else wanted. ladytron cd, poster, sticker, and a mount sims cd. anyhow, the bartender, the older lady who looks like shes into horse-sex, was complaining about the music and how they would never ever book that dj again. but i liked the music!

they do have miller high life though, which is nice, because its hard to find in nyc, except at one place but they charged $5 for it.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 13 January 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

There was no ID-checker last night because it's really empty there on weeknights so the bartender checked them. Sorry. But we go there because: it's really close; they have cheap drinks; and they play good music. But I avoid it on the weekends because it's so fucking CROWDED and LOUD.

I am wearing dark green cords today.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 13 January 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I spend the Gap gift certificate my dad gave me for Hanukah last night. I got a pair of jeans, two tee shirts (they came in a small plastic container), and some underwear. It's embarassing how happy my new jeans make me.

I also bought the new Zelda for Game Boy last night but refuse to play it until I finish the book I'm reading and possibly another.

I gave my 2 weeks notice this morning, but Sandra Bullock wasn't involved, thank god.

I'll be working as an assistant to a team of architects and interior designers who create those f'n big condo buildings on the Gold Coast. Ooh la la. I'm excited because I'll be able to learn a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I'll be about a 10 minute drive or less to work, make more money, and, most importantly, WON'T WORK HERE ANY MORE! BOO YA!

thanks all.

the job i'm interviewing for wouldn't start really until june, it's at a summer program for scary gifted children. i'll still need to find some crappy job until then. hopefully i will get into school and not have to worry about working past august.

I also have a job interview tomorrow, for a call center. How exciting. I think the only qualifications are being able to string a few sentences together and having a pulse. At least that's the feeling I got from the first two phone interviews.

GOOD LUCK, AM!!!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

We all need to get together sometime soon (I just cleaned our apartment yesterday when I was nervous about my third interview that afternoon!).

Jeff, Have fun with the new therapist. I haven't had one in several years now - sounds kind of nice - but hopefully I won't need one as much now that I won't be working here.

Anyone been outside in the past few hours? The snow is so pretty on the branches.

I was a scary (ie: gifted) child. I don't know what happened. I've managed to retain the geek factor, with a touch of creepiness, but I guess I wasted my extra brain cells somewhere along the way.

Ditto here. I was all sheltered and kept away from the "normals" (not that we called them that) until high school, which I think left me profoundly unprepared for high school. I'm still a complete social retard in many ways. And I never got the education they promised me early on, either. At least I'm still smart enough to avoid watching almost all television.

I think of Homer walking into the house and announcing, "Good news, everybody! I got in a fight with the garbagemen and they're cutting off our service!"

And the rest of our little drama with SBC played out much the same way.

Me: "I am NOT paying this bill!"

Them: "Ok. Go suck an egg, then."

Me: *furiously calls every other phone company in the world, only to find that SBC has me be the balls, which of course they knew all along*

Me: "Ok, I'll pay the bill."

Them: "Sorry, too slow. Now you have to set up a whole new phone line, and while you're at it, we'd like to humiliate you a bit. Can you stand outside naked and sing The Star Spangled Banner for us? Thanks."

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh, but that's not even the end of it. The reason it doesn't work *now* is because it's just a bad line. They hooked it up, it worked fine for three hours, and then the line became so static-y it was unusable, and it's been like that for days, and the only repair help I can get is an automated system that does nothing but tell me it's being worked on.

i still need to see that movie!

i have no temp assignment today, so i'm going to run 1,500 errands including selling about 100 CDs, watering my friend's plants, going to costco (!!), getting my hair cut, and renting "peking opera blues."

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 14 January 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Am, It sounds promising that the interview was so long. Good luck!

Saturday night, everyone? Huh huh huh?

I'm all excited RIGHT THIS SECOND because for lunch today I have Settimana Cafe pasta leftovers mmm...

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm not excited for lunch because I have to stand outside in the cold and pass out Canasta flyers!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

OK, I don't have to. (It wasn't my idea, tho.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 January 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

"cold" seems an inadequate word for 8 degrees.

I will be in Illinoi3e this weekend, but not, unfortunately, in Chicago.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Anyone going to Neko Case tonight? I know it's cooolllld, but I'm a big fan, and just realized she is playing tonight, and I don't know if I can get anyone to go.
i'm an ilx old-timer, just changed my screen name

Yr3k (dymaxia), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Ilx old-timer, Would we know you by your old screen name? Where's she playing? I really like the New Pornographers.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Double Door, I think. Neko is much, much better than New Pornographer, IMO.

Sometime ILX poster Kelsey is going. It's at the Metro.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

(And Sarah, it's k3rry)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

am., are you moved into Wicker Park yet? Anytime you want to come hang out, just give us a call.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

yes. i am going. tonight!

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

n.a., i think i'll move tomorrow evening. what are your plans tomorrow night?

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

i would've moved earlier but things keep coming up and i haven't had time during the day, and i've been too tired every night to contemplate a move, even a temporary one.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 14 January 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

It looks like tomorrow night we might ALL be getting together, if you read upthread. So that's cool. We need to brainstorm for non-drinking related activities.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

poker night? poker seems to need to involve drinking though. other gaming?

STRIP CHARADES!

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

I seriously vote for KARAOKE! Though it's hard to do karaoke without drinking also.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Karaoke is impossible without drinking. I'd love to do that again though. We went to live band karaoke the first time we visited chicago, and Jenny sang War Pigs. You haven't heard War Pigs until you've seen a girl in a red cardigan sing it.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Or we could go to the practice space and have the first practice of the CHICAGO FAP BAND EXPERIENCE!

I really want to do live band karaoke.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 14 January 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

I haven't done karaoke in FOREVER, gents. Miccio said on his blog that "Ignition (Remix)" is his go-to song lately, and I was like, OMG I totally need to do that!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I'm still gonna drink around you guys, btw. Fuck that.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I wanna be in the Fap Band. Can I play the jug?

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

I am good at and enjoy karaoke. Maybe I will suggest it on the SF thread.

Awesome Welles (nordicskilla), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Dude, you guys better keep the drum throne of the FAP Band open, 'cause I'm down.

Or I could play cowbell, because that's just as good.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

i'll only do karaoke if we go somewhere where i can sing george jones tunes.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Hi, Kelsey, yes J was exactly correct as far as my id. I am going, I have long dark curly hair and will be wearing a black pea coat, so if you or anyone else see me, say hi. Yeah, I like Neko solo better than New Pornographers, but I do like both. Anyway, time to head home for dinner.

Yr3k (dymaxia), Friday, 14 January 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

chicago? Chicago? CHICAGO? CHICAGO? CHICAGO?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 15 January 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

morning all. I'm going out to the MoMA for a few hours, and when I get back, I expect to see that solid plans have been made for tonight, even if they're only "go to Nick and Sarah's place and watch TV." Just... somethin'. Help me out here.

Not having much luck finding Sat. night karaoke, I can only find it at meathead/sports bar places like Trader Todds. Any ideas of other places that might have it?

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

I have no fucking idea what we should do tonight, but it should be SOMETHING. Streak Millenium Park?

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:19 (twenty years ago)

hm. Well, admission was half price because half the building was under construction, which made the trip both cheap and disappointing. The best thing I did today was buy magazines at Borders. The new Atlantic Monthly has this absolutely bone-chilling future history of terrorism by Richard Clarke in which he looks back at the last ten years from September 11, 2011. Heavily footnoted. I had no idea that casinos were such a juicy target.

Anyway. So what are we doing tonight?

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Streak Millenium Park?

Sure. I've often wondered whether streaking in single-digit temperatures would result in your genitals actually breaking off and shattering on the ground, or if that's just hyperbole.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Well fuck, we can all just meet at my house and then go to Jinx or somewhere for coffee, because really, each others' company is the only entertainment we need.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

There's a great place for karaoke but it's pretty far north -- like 5300 N. Lincoln or something -- it's great, though.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Am. and I were just talking about going to see 20th Century at the LaSalle Bank Cinema thing tonight at 8, but the only problem is driving, because we'd have to uh drive there. What do you think? We're going to go eat but then I'll check here when we get back.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

what's 20th Century?

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:42 (twenty years ago)

A screwball Howard Hawks comedy, Rosenbaum loves it so it must be good.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

The karaoke place, btw, is Hidden Cove (5336 N. Lincoln)

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 15 January 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

I am OK with:
a. karaoke
b. old movie
c. getting coffee
d. some combination of the above
But someone needs to decide. Basically we have to decide if we feel like doing something passive (movie or coffee), something active (karaoke) and whether we feel like driving a long way.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 15 January 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Am. and Sarah are both pushing hard for the old movie, I'm ambivalent, but am. is offering to drive and pick up Kenan too, if you guys are interested. It's at 8 at the La Salle Bank Cinema.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 15 January 2005 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Old movie is good, yo, if there's a ride involved. Did you guys get my email about my new phone number? It's still pretty much stuffed, but you can call and shout to me if you need to. Pick us up about 7, 7:30?

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

Actually, that's not true. That's not why I'm not at the movie. I'm not even drinking right now. But ummmm. I like drinking in general. And there's no policy: I think the people who said no drinking tonight likely have overdone it in the past and are looking for a change of pace.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 16 January 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

in MK2 there was a word for that...PUS-EEE!

wait where is bnw??

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

I've never been to St. Louis. In fact, I've never really been anywhere in the Midwest except for Chicago.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 16 January 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I've never been to St. Louis, except for their horrible, horrible airport.

i just went their a month ago...what's so 'orrrible about it?

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 05:33 (twenty years ago)

St. Louis is not so bad. I've been there about five times in the last seven years, as I have a few friends down there. When I've been by myself, I've pretty much just hung out on Delmar (?) St.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

you ppl are far too reserved for me i think but i'm reserved 2 whe nnot inxtoxicated is some manner. i will move there work at mckeen d's and things will be peaches. we will see lots of old films.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

vintage vinyl = only decent rec stode i have ever been in

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

i just went their a month ago...what's so 'orrrible about it?

Oh, it just seems that something goes wrong every single time. Either there are delays and I have to hang out there for hours, or the connecting flight is leaving FIVE MINUTES after I get there and they haven't made that flight aware of my flight so I have to sprint around the airport.

I'm sure it's a lovely city though.

Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

o wait nm. it was horrible for us too. it was me + family flying out and they overbooked by TEN SEATS therefore my mom was left cold. if it wasn't for CONSTANT hassling the poor counterguy [not by her cuz she's far too peachy for that kind of thing] she wouldn't have gotten on the plane.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 16 January 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I love everybody. That is all.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Sunday, 16 January 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

How was the film?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Sunday, 16 January 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

i was way too sleepy to get into the movie, which was sort of constantly manic (it was about two theater people who were complete and utter hams in real life); i feel bad about that because i was really encouraging of that plan, going to the movie i mean. i hope other people got something out of it.

i feel weird talking *about* ilx when we meet, because well, i don't feel really invested in it and i don't want to feel like the sort of person who is really invested in it. all that to say i feel a little bad for saying things like "i hardly post anymore except to the chicago thread" (sort of true) a dozen times last evening.

anyway it was nice to see you all!

amateur!!st, Sunday, 16 January 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

I don't really like talking about ILX when we all get together because it seems kinda silly, but I think it's worse to try and place restrictions on what we can talk about, so I just go with the flow.

It was fun. I feel bad about keeping the rest of the whiskey though because I don't really drink whiskey. But either I will keep it for the next time you all are around, or I will swig it from the bottle and pretend I'm Captain Haddock from Tintin.

The movie was odd and not was I was expecting, but it was highly entertaining, and the audience was pretty entertaining too.

Fun!

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 17 January 2005 02:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm home, but not in bed.

Stupid McLazy pants is nothing implying the Miss McLusky is lazy or a drunkard, it's just common syntax for nicknames in our household. Examples:

Kitty McFranciePants
Franky McChugsAlot
Nipples McStandsAlot
Chicken McGravyFeet

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm at work, and dragging on little sleep! And the office is cold!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

Nipples McStandsAlot
Should I address your gf with her new title from now on?

In my household, we like to add McGee to everything, mostly as in Drunky McGee.

jaymc, How was the show last night? Didn't you love the D1als?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

In my house it's usually something like "well hello, Drunky McDrunksworth."

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

The Dials were great. Really fun. I have a crush on one of them now.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I bet I know which one.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 January 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

If it's the guitarist, then you'll have to fight over her with our drummer.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

No, it's not the guitarist! Although when I told her that I was friends with the Fake Fictions, she said, "Oh yeah, Ben, right?"

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Actually, wait, there are two guitarists. The taller one.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

Also, I'll give you a hint: it's not the drummer, either.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

So which is it, a crush on the tall guitarist or the Farfisa? Either way I'm relieved, because I have a crush on the short guitarist.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

FARFISA. The taller guitarist is the one who mentioned Ben.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

But he liked the shorter one... They're all really nice though and Ben is getting lessons soon from their drummer!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Rock.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

Actually, to clarify, my crushee was the one I looked up on FRIENDST(ALK)ER.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Your band's drummer is getting lessons from another band's drummer? That's so sweet and cooperative.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 17 January 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember much about the drummer from the Dials. Don't let Ben's chops get too hot or let him start hitting rimshots though, I think his style sounds good with you guys.

ok i think i may've asked this on this thread while very drunk (and this might be the thread where i hit on teeny something fierce too i still need to send her an email of apology cuz i feel sorta awful about that) but i kinda hate revisiting drunken ramblings, that's the great/awful thing about ilx being the extent of your social life, all your inebriated slobberings are forever frozen to the monitorpane like the most demented unsightly concept art ever created...anyway what i was wondering is is it POSSIBLE IN THEORY to live in like a 50 sq ft apt in a decent neighborhood in chicago w/ a 40 hr workweek at terrible pay. cuz i am not-quite considering it. thanks.

btw sarah you are extremely hot. i think/hope i can get away w/ saying that because i am "bumping up your self-esteem" or something.

ps in case yr wondering no i'm not drunk/sketching, just too much caffeine again. i'm trying to get my life in order here people.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

what are you looking at for a month? You can get a studio anywhere from 400-500 a month, a 1 bedroom for 500-600, at least in the Andersonville/Uptown area. Maybe ever cheaper up in Roger's Park.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

what do you mean, salary or rent-wise? say a grand a month salarywise, i have nofuckingclue. rent-wise, as low as i can damn well get. i'd kind of like to have a car but i guess that won't be essential willit?

400 a month sounds cheap to me (i think it's v tough to get below 300 here) but then i don't know a thing.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

I think Jeff is lowballing it. I think a $400 studio would be really hard to come by.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah well, fuckit i guess, i'm just being whimsical here but i am def not going to spend my entire life in central illinois. jesus god it's awful here.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it wouldn't be easy, but if you find a private renter, and not a reality company, you can find some pretty good deals. Jesse's one bedroom is huge for $600 a month, just a block from our apartment that was nearly twice as much.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

My crapped-out Rogers Park studio was running 460 in 1999, and what with "the kids" moving up in that direction I can't imagine it hasn't perked up a little. Take this with a total grain of salt, as I haven't been back to Chicago in well over a year, but I'm guessing the cheapest-ass living you can do without having a car is still to (a) get hold of a roomie and (b) live west of Western and as far from the Blue Line as you feel like regularly walking: I know plenty of folks who have basically one floor of a house out there, for as low as $250 each in two bedrooms. Which, hell: you don't even really need the roommate to make that work.

Alternately yeah, Rogers Park -- and last I looked, there was a really surprising number of singles up there. This was, as mentioned, in 1999, but they don't appear to have drastically repurposed the buildings up there yet. Depending on how dreary of a place you can handle and how inconveniently you want to be placed -- train and stuff and sketchiness-wise -- $400 to $600 seems like a decent studio bet.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 17 January 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Xposts. You could maybe do $400, JMC -- aren't there still some pretty ganky places up toward Howard? I have no idea exactly how low-lifey we feel like getting, here. For anything half-decent, certainly not.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

And I assume the gankier areas of Rogers Park have gotten somewhat less ganky since I stopped going through the neighborhood, what with the Dominics and the condos and the hipsters and the Jello pudding.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, to be honest, I haven't looked for a studio myself, I'm just going by what others have said. But the people I'm talking to may be going into it with somewhat raised standards and thus aren't including ganky Rogers Park units. I'm afraid to move because I'm paying $650 for a two-bedroom in north Andersonville.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

yeah roomate is the obvious way to go but i don't think i could do it because i hate people and i am insane

John, You can have my job since I put in my 2 weeks notice last week. :-D

Yeah, Chicago is pricey compared to where I moved from (Virginia), but it's been really worth it.

John-thanks so much for the CDs. "So Weit Wie Noch Nie" is my new favorite song, for now.

It's great, isn't it? Glad you're enjoying them.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

I know, nabisco, but I've never lived in NYC. I think Chicago is also cheaper than San Fran, Boston & DC.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Fake Fictions cds are almost done: covers and cds are screenprinted, plastic protectors are here. All that is left is copying the cds and adding the insert with the photo of us and credit for the dude who mastered it. If you want a copy, come to the show at the Ice Factory on Friday!

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Did you get blank cds screenprinted?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

We did it ourselves, DIY, dude, but yeah, on blank white cd-rs. The cds and inside cover look a little sloppy but attractively minimal, the front covers look pretty awesome, at least to me. Two colors, neon orange and bright blue, on white card.

Also, this morning my car on the El train had the doors open on both sides while going from the Damen stop to the Division stop. It was exciting and invigorating.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes if you give the doors a little kick, they'll close. They're just frozen.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

neon orange and bright blue

Woah, awesome.

congrats on the cds!

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to getting one. I hope I can go to the Slipper Club show...Maddie and I are going to a party in Minneapolis on Saturday, but I don't know which day we're leaving on.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

i once scowled at a guy for tyring to pry open the doors on the wrong side of the train car at a stop on the red line. he was really in a panic about it.

that was an xpost of some kind.

I've wondered before if professional hit men actually dress as well as they always do in the movies. I mean, on the one hand, they might dress up to look respectable. Equally possible they dress normally to fit in. I have no way of knowing.

dude, it's a michael mann movie! everyone will be wearing nice suits.

Turns out Illustrator was completely useless for sticking a photo on a page. Now I know.

Ha, thanks Kenan. I don't know if we're really soothing though, or even bedroom sounds, except maybe for the premature ejaculator. But it's pretty!

Yeah, that's by the same photographer who did the other one, but I think I like the "in the woods" series better. There's one where we're trying to act like we found something shocking in the woods, it's pretty funny. There's also a very small picture of the cd cover on the website right now, for those who are interested.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 20 January 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I like the tree scenes. Thanks, Kenan.

B-but, Am.! Your name is A LOT like that! Gimme a break! (Pop quiz - what song is it that goes GIMME A BREAK WHY DON'T YOU GIMME A BREAK NOW?? several times over and over??)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 20 January 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

That is a good and cute cover.

I'll be able to get this at, like, amazon.com, right?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 20 January 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

I've all but decided I'm going to the Apple store to buy an iPod Shuffle this afternoon. I've been really depressed for a couple of days, to the point of nearly crying this morning when I couldn't find my keys. I'm having my period, I think. Anyway, nothing cheers me up like new toys, and I think that may be just the one.

I think my favorite part of the city are the wonderful paintings of naked women easily viewed from the Damen blue line stop. The best, of course, being the one with a naked woman holding an automatic rifle overlayed a star of david shaped canvas with the israeli flag painted as a backdrop.

The amazing thing was one that picture was taken down, it was replaced with ANOTHER painting of a naked woman holding an automatic rifle on a star of David shaped canvas. The difference? Well the backdrop was changed to an American flag of course.

Does anyone know the dude who paints these? If so, how seriously does he take himself? I've lived here for like 4 months now and I can't fucking figure out if he's the master of irony or just some guy that really likes naked Jewish women holding rifles.

jordan, I like that logo a lot. Looks like you just need a bit more page structure to keep it from looking so much like a list. I'll play around with it later this week or this weekend, and you can see if you like.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

YES!

The latest batch has a fucking monster of a woman. From the trainstop, I couldn't tell if it was another painting of a woman, or his interpretation of jabba the hutt.

I'm guessing he gets actual honest-to-god WILLING models for this?

matttt (chachee), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I'd do it.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I would not be a model for Jabba the Hut. I'd like to think that I would not suffice for this modeling job.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Awesome! Thanks Kenan. I'd like to do some background colors too but I don't have a proper photo editing program (just, um, MS Paint).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Jojo? I was thinking this guy would be more of a "Bud" or a "Pete" or some name that's commonly associated with...well paintings of naked chicks holding guns. But jojo?

Man, I'm developing a nice creepy obsession for this guy, but I don't know if I'd ever actually want to meet him. Could the man live up to the paintings? I doubt it.

matttt (chachee), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

Dude, if you were a girl, and you were like sitting in the park, and some guy came over and started telling you how he was a photographer and would you like to come back to his place and do some work with him in the studio in his basement, what name would you possibly expect that guy to have apart from Jojo? Maybe Clifford or Boudreau or something, I guess.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

My middle name is Boudreau!

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

not really.

.ada.m. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 20 January 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I'm not totally sure it's him. I mean, I know Jojo has a suite in that building, just not sure whether those paintings are his. Maybe not. More on Jojo.

I'm excited about tonight for two reasons: your show, and mad, stupid amounts of snow.

Mad, stupid amounts of show!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

It's going to be weird leaving the show really late at night, probably at least halfway intoxicated, and having to deal with driving all of our equipment and three people in our Toyota Corolla back to our house and unloading it while meanwhile it's snowing insanely. But it will be kind of fun, because it's the weekend, so who cares?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I love all the seasonal distance and forgetting in Chicago. Mad amounts of snow and spring seems impossible. Then you're watching the Harold Washington Day parade and you can't imagine that it ever snows.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Isn't that true in NYC, too?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Where are you going to get drunk food after the show?

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

home, yo. it's too cold for that shit.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 21 January 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Okay: I used to argue with people that NYC winters couldn’t possibly be that much nicer than Chicago winters—maybe a tad warmer, sure, but nothing life-changing. And on the days when it’s seriously frigid here, that’s probably true. But I gotta say: by and large winter is a hell of a lot smoother, and interspersed with a whole lot more mild half-sunny days where you’re not thinking much about weather at all. It’s not the low points that make the difference—it’s that you never get to that constant chilled-to-bone Chicago state where you just take it as given that it’s freezing outside, and there’s no point checking the weather for hope cause it just will be for a few more weeks.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 21 January 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm just thrilled -- THRILLED! -- that it's not 5 degrees anymore, like it was for the last week or so.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 22 January 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Am! It's ok. You should have seen us trying to drive the car back home and find a parking spot. It was mad crazy. Nick only had to push the car once though, so that was good I guess.

We made good mula at that show including cds we sold, so now we can buy a PA for our practice space - yay!

In other news, my belly hurts from boozin' it up. Nick needs to wake up so we can trek out to find breakfast.

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 22 January 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Man, I spoke too soon this morning. We are having a full-blown blizzard out there! I don't think we've had one since 2000, and this one looks worse, maybe. The wind is nasty and very loud. I'm hearing lots of screaming sirens, too.

K3rry, Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:11 (twenty years ago)

It's a great day to stay inside and get drunk. I think we are going out tonight though. I rode the bus, today, it was sliding all over the place. Awesome.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

I've decided I'm staying in for the rest of the night. I was just outside and after trudging through snow practically up to my knees, I took off my shoes and pants and changed into my pajamas. I'm eating awesome spicy Thai food and listening to music and I have three DVDs from Netflix to choose from for later. The only thing I don't have is booze. There's a place that delivers liquor: I wonder if I should call them.

K3rry -- I think you're right: the last blizzard on this level I remember was December 2000.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm off the booze, yo, and on the marijuana and peppermint tea. It's just as good, really.

Funny, the sun broke through the clouds for about ten minutes earlier today, and I thought, "It's over?" It is not over. Far from it, I gather.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 22 January 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Ah, marijuana! There is an idea.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

is this "peppermint tea, w/ marijuana"? cuz that's not bad from what ive heard from others. you'll prolly need some additives tho if you care a whit abt flavor.

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Hi. Thanks to everyone for coming to the show last night, it was crazy how many people we knew at the show and it was a lot of fun.

This snow is FUCKED UP. I don't think we're going to be able to have practice tomorrow because I ended up having to park in our alley spot last night and I don't think we're going to be able to get the car out. It took me getting out and pushing the car to even get INTO the space. We spent a few hours this morning walking around, going to Leo's for breakfast and then on to Blockbuster (where they were out of the DVDs of 24 we wanted, the bastards), then back down Division to our regular video store, but since then we've been lazin' around, eating pasta with pesto and attempting to watch The Doors, which I thought would be entertainly ridiculous but is mostly just annoyingly grandiose.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you guys were great! Hope I wasn't too ridiculously drunk! But you're a good band to be drunk while watching. I loved how many people were dancing.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

I know, it was awesome! I actually felt kind of aloof and shy for the first few songs (fairly unusual for me) but once people started dancing it made me feel really good and after that it was smoooooth sailing.

"Those things can be fickle."

You were great, man, especially when you were getting surly about the rockist afterparty music. I decided today I want to make some mix cds of good cheezy dancey music to donate to the Ice Factory for after shows.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. I think I was only disappointed because the music was so great last time you (we) played there.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

I liked the music, but yeah, it wasn't really good dance music.

We all should all be on a conference call with each other while we're stuck at home.

Sarah and I might actually venture back out in a little bit to get some coffee. But for now, we're listening to the Tom Tom Club record I bought today.

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Wait, it just ended, now we're listening to the Royal Trux record I bought today (Cats and Dogs).

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

Best thing about the snow: being able to sit at home being totally lazy without thinking "I should really be out doing something more enriching."

n/a (Nick A.), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

Last night: Dawn of the Dead (the silly remake with the amazing opening sequence)

Today: Day of the Dead

Tonight: VAMPIRES VS. ZOMBIES: THE BATTLE BETWEEN THE LIVING DEAD AND THE UNDEAD HAS BEGUN. A FAST, FURIOUS HORROR ACTION VAMPIRE LESBIAN STORY!

(I couldn't make this shit up)

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

(speaking of not doing something enriching)

Jordan (Jordan), Saturday, 22 January 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Awesome. I thought that Dawn of the Dead remake was pretty shitty though. Day of the Dead is good, but not as good as Night of... or the original Dawn of.... Have you ever seen Dead Alive?

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 23 January 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

i have shaun of the dead to watch...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Sunday, 23 January 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

Shaun of the Dead is great. I have not seen the new Dawn of the Dead remake, but it does not sound appealing (trapped in a mall?). It sounds like you guys had a great show and I am sad I am not doing any of the things you are doing above. I am going sledding tomorrow though, coolslices. (PS Jordan-see if you can track down a movie called Bloodsucking Pharoahs from Pittsburgh, an Alan Smitheee film, it may compliment the one you listed above nicely.)

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Sunday, 23 January 2005 10:07 (twenty years ago)

jocelyn, the original Dawn OTD was set in a mall too and it's basically like the best zombie movie ever. But the new one sucks not because of the mall but because of a whole bunch of other lame shit (eg, fast zombies (which aren't really zombies), too many characters just for the purpose of being able to kill a bunch of them off, a really fucking lame ending, etc.).

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 23 January 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Bloodsucking Pharoahs, sweet. Nick, we did watch Dead Alive a few years ago, I remember feeling slightly queasy (but in a good way)after watching all that fake blood & gore and these sorts of things don't usually bother me.

The original Dawn of the Dead is set in a mall, but that's pretty much the only similarity with the remake.

I think Bub the Zombie would be a good name for a band.

I thought this weekend was really strange. Actually, the last few weeks have been really strange for me. Friday night was great, but things got weird Saturday and Sunday because we were trapped in the house pretty much. Every time we went outside in search of adventure, we'd come back home exhausted. Well, mostly me, because I'm such a wuss and it's HARD walking in snow that high!

It's my last Monday at this company!

Happy day, Sarah! Make a spectacle of yourself!

Hey, Sarah & Nick are playing in Madison tomorrow, right? What time do you guys start? Mama Digdown's called a rehearsal on Friday night (WTF) from 8-10, but I'd really like to catch the set.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 27 January 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

Let's get back to the Sultan's Market part:

Shawerma!
Jerusalem Salad!

That shit cannot be faded. It's also the only store in the neighborhood at which I can find Sriracha. Being a fitness geek, I just look out the windows of the Bucktown Fitness Club at Sultan's and salivate all over the forehead of the dude I'm supposed to be spotting.

matttt (chachee), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

What is the deadly sauce they use that has a bajillion calories and fat? Tahini sauce?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

tahini sauce is pretty much ground up sesame seeds, isn't it? and that's high in fat...

JuliaA (j_bdules), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:27 (twenty years ago)

The deadly, DELICIOUS sauce? Yeah that's tahini (oil and sesame seeds). It's also the stuff that makes hummus (or baba ganouj) so smooth and fucking fantastic.

I recommend picking up a high metabolism somewhere.

matttt (chachee), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I got a falafel sandwich the other day for lunch from HAIFA CAFE (Clark/Van Buren-ish) and said no tahini this time, and then as soon as I took a bite immediately regretted it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

you know what's good too? halva, that's like pure sesame seed fatty desserty goodness. it's like middle eastern fudge. only not chocolate of course.

I know, right? Especially since the last time I went there it was one of the most delicious falafel sandwiches I've ever had.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

More Wicker Park/Bucktown (shit, even Logan Square) restaurant recommendations?

As far as taquerias go, the best _by far_ is Taqueria Moran at the California blue line stop. Vegetarians should probably avoid it though -- cause you know, everything either has meat or is cooked next to meat, but it's delicious meat.

Chicago Restaurants

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

How long have you lived here, Mattt?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

Uhhh, about 5 hazy months I guess, but I've eaten like 8 months worth of food since I moved here.

It's pretty crazy too, I live a wee bit west of Western (south of Fullerton) and I've already seen like 5 buildings get torn down and/or uber renovated just on the way to the Western stop. Logan Square is the new Wicker Park.

matttt (chachee), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

It's true.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I suppose it doesn't help when 20something year old white dudes (ahem) move into an otherwise ethno-centric neighborhood. Man, being liberal AND hip is hard.

matttt (chachee), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember if I mentioned it on the Chicago Restaurant thread, but Lula Cafe in Logan Square is really good. I just ate there last week for the first time in a couple years: yum. The nice thing about it is that there's some fancy stuff on the menu that's a little pricey (entrees can hit the high teens), but they also have great sandwiches and pasta and salads that are under $10. The downside is that ever since the secret got out (NY Times profile, among other things), it's pretty busy all the time. The first time I ate there, in summer 2001, I strolled in with a group of ten people at 7 pm on a Friday, no problem. Last week, it was a party of five at 8:30 on a Thursday, and there was a wait.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if you guys would know, but I have to take my mom to dinner someplace on Feb. 12th. It has to be Kosher, and it would be awesome if it was downtown (I'm staying at Hotel 71) or not far from the Green Mill (Lawrence and Broadway, I think?). Anyone know any Hasids?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 27 January 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

i'm so hungry

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

As of my leaving town Sultan's Market was still Dead Cheap, too -- and the guy who runs it is awfully likeable. It used to be a bit of a hole! And this enterprising young man made such lovely things happen. I kinda flipped when he started to reliably carry meat. I may also have been guilty of stopping by far too often just to get one of his $2.50 deli sandwiches -- just cold cuts on a roll, sure, but $2.50!

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:10 (twenty years ago)

I can't think of much off-hand, Jordan. There's a couple of Jewish delis downtown that might be open for dinner (prob. just soup and sandwich fare, tho). The Orthodox Jewish enclave in Chicago is in West Rogers Park, just west of the Indian community, and has a kosher pizza place, kosher Italian restaurant, maybe some others -- but that's prob. out of your way. (From the Green Mill, it's about 3 miles west and 2 miles north.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

is feb 12 a friday or saturday...?

there's a kosher chinese place in lakeview i think--i've been to it, it stinks.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, that might be doable, thanks dude.

(Feb. 12th is a Saturday)

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 28 January 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

hello!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 28 January 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, we're playing first tonight, so probably around 9 or 9:30, but you should come anyways. COME HANG OUT. We'll be friendlier this time since we'll get the stagefright part over with early.

I get my falafel sandwiches from Sultan's Market with taboulleh instead of Jerusalem salad, because I'm not big on cucumbers. Also, the spinach pie and the dolmades are dope.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 28 January 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

Dope? Well, I goota try them then, if they're dope.

Taqueria Moran at the California

Can you get brains there? Oh-hohohoho, ha ha ha lol....

i called n.a. today but he's probably in wisconsin or on his way there. i totally forgot.

Tristeza this weekend, right people? ...people? hello? fine.

matttt (chachee), Friday, 28 January 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

i'm up for meeting some new people, as long as you aren't like weird and antisocial and stuff.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I thought about going to that, Mattttttttt. I really liked Spine and Sensory a while back (although I haven't listened to it in a couple years). Jessica Hopper is also DJing on that bill. You should e-mail me if you go.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

Oh, i'm weird and antisocial, but in a charming way -- at least according to my mom. Emails shall be sent.

matttt (chachee), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm weird and social. Partial credit?

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 28 January 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

ok, yeah, to qualify: if you're weird and antisocial in a charming way, and can maintain basic hygeine, that's cool.

:-)

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Saturday, 29 January 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

No one's posted since Friday? I'm worried that mattt murdered everyone after the Tristeza show.

The best part of the Wisconsin show/trip: stopping at Midwest Buy & Sell on the way home yesterday and Ben buying a Farfisa organ for $100. It sounds incredible and looks incredible in our practice space. Now we just need someone to play it.

n/a (Nick A.), Sunday, 30 January 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

No one's posted since Friday? I'm worried that mattt murdered everyone after the Tristeza show.

It's tonight. Just sayin'.

OMG, I want a Farfisa so bad.

Oh wait...

Now we just need someone to play it.

*cough*

Ummm, so: worst part of the Canasta trip to Bloomington, IL? My car broke down along the way, is now at a repair shop in Pontiac, and will possibly cost me an arm and a leg to get fixed, at which point I may have to sacrifice the car altogether.

Best part was that even though the show was two hours late and Velvetron played forever, nobody in the audience left: there were about 30 college kids sitting completely rapt and quiet for the entire show. Man, if I were them, I'd have been restless and wanting ALCOHOL (it was an all-ages event and on campus, in a black box theatre) -- but I guess they were just so happy to have an actual rock band from Chicago play at their school, it didn't matter. (I also realized that no drinking meant that all of the sign-ups on our mailing list were completely legible, for once!)

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and as I just e-mailed to Matt -- my no-car situation means I prob. won't go out to the Bottle tonight, sorry.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 30 January 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

The Fake Fictions show on Friday was really good. Too bad the room was all nonresponsive (I'm convinced it's because of the setup), but you guys handled it very well. I had fun before my sleepiness took me out of the game.

Was the Buy & Sell the one in town, down on E. Washington? If so, damn, I'm going to have to go there more often.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Too bad the room was all nonresponsive

You should have played the theme to "Rawhide."

The Buy & Sell is in Chicago, but it's so far west that I'm usually too lazy to go out there. But since we were coming in from that direction, we made a special stop there.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 31 January 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I dig this town. I really do.

Has anyone tried this place: www.kasiasdeli.com ? It's not as far west as I'd thought.

They have the fabled spinach pierogi, but you can buy some of their other pierogi at Dominick's. Gonna have to make a trip. There's another pierogi maker on the far, far west side that I'm trying to track down.

Yr3k (dymaxia), Monday, 31 January 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Anybody going to Dizzie Rascal on 4/30?

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, awesome, I hadn't seen that was announced. Sweet.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

The DoubleDOor is weird, they'll have nothing as far as shows go for months, then get someone I really want to see, then continue to suck for 6 more months.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I've still only seen like five shows there in the four years I've lived here. I think they make do with lots of shitty local bands that somehow draw well.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

The word is out: you have to go to the Double Door and support your crappy local bands! Because if you don't, one day there may *be* no more crappy local bands!

Wait a second...

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I think they have some weird Brit-booking hookup. Which means, yeah, occasionally something good, but mostly acts that draw well but are too mediocre to play the Metro. I remember seeing Cornelius and Broadcast there -- both cool -- but the last time I went before leaving was probably getting lured to a Zero 7 show, which seemed to sum up the place's status well. (It was either that or seeing my friends' local band, which of course was not crappy!)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Zero 7 = wonderful DJ set.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the British stuff is weird. Not the music itself but the fact that they have a premium on NME darlings that haven't *quite* made it in the U.S. Like, Canasta almost got on a bill opening for Kaiser Chiefs next month.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 20:48 (twenty years ago)

The only bands I've gone to see at the Double Door were Hot Snakes and... Canasta! (Those were two different shows, not Hot Snakes and Canasta, which would be kind of a weird line-up).

Is Dizzee supposed to be any good live?

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 1 February 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

wouldn't it be great if the sign were just "rock group ave."???

i've seen a few shows at the DD, but they all date to 2000 or earler.

I do.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Was it something in particular?

I do know something about Man Man, one of the bands playing tomorrow, because their cd was playing in Reckless and it was really good, poppy music with raspy vocals and chimes and stuff, but I don't know if would work live because a lot of the charm depended on the fact that they had all these crazy choir-esque back-up vox that I doubt they could pull off live.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Of course no one has any concrete ideas for what we should do...

The show tomorrow sounds kinda cool based on the Reader description of Icy Demons, the headlining band, as "art-damaged pop." But I'd rather do stuff with friends...

I love Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Actually, I just realized that it's one of only two movies I've seen three times in the theater. But unlike Eternal Sunshine, which I saw three times within a month, I saw Umbrellas first in May 1996 (Music Box), then in December 1996 (Hinsdale), and then in April 2004 (Music Box). I used to have the soundtrack on vinyl but I must have lost it.

It was all very serendipitous.

So Kenan, I would just assume that Sarah and I will be showing up around 7-ish for enchiladas, unless I call to say otherwise. What should I bring? Cerveza? Tortilla chips? Soda?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 4 February 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

ooh... soda. I'm a soda junkie lately.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 4 February 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm really into the San Pellegrino Limonata soda these days, but I'm never sure where I can find it. I may also bring cerveza for me & jaymc though (and anyone else who wants it).

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 4 February 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

cool.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Friday, 4 February 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

How was movie night?

What are ChilXors doing tonight? I'm about 80% sure I'm going to see Archer Prewitt at the empty bottle.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

That sounds great, but I have sitting around the apartment to do. Plus, I'm pretty broke. Plus, I've had TOO MUCH EXCITEMENT. Because whenever ChiLXors get together, there's always madness. MADNESS.

The movie wasn't great, but it wasn't near as bad as one particular person made it out to be.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Saturday, 5 February 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I realized this weekend that the FF's have the optimal band setup as far as staying in hotels. Sarah & Nick can have one bed, Ben can have the other. In my band we have de facto bed buddies (barely supressed homoeroticism included) and complicated hierarchical systems to determine who has to sleep on the flo'.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

You know, sleeping in the same bed is sometimes a drawback of a relationship. Not always, mind you, and not even usually, but sometimes I envy Ricky and Lucy Ricardo. Sometimes I don't want intimacy, don't want contact, don't even want proximity, I just want to get some fucking sleep and seriously.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

Maddie and I have separate bedrooms for mostly this reason. Sleeping together is fine, but we know we both get better sleep we can sprawl over the bed without fear of reprisal.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Really? OMG I love it. If we ever get married, this will be a condition of the contract. I want my own room altogether.

Pears can just fuck right off. (kenan), Monday, 7 February 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

It wasn't really a problem for me because when we were first dating, we were sleeping in my tiny tiny college dorm room bed, so when Sarah graduated and got a queen-sized bed, the relative amount of space that we each had was astounding.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Dude, having your own room rules. Some people think it's weird for whatever reason, but I don't think we could give it up.

It would be cool to have a big king + sized bed though, the kind where you might as well be in separate rooms.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

i feel like i should be part of this thread because i live in Chicago but I have no idea what's going on here.
I'll contribute this photo.

Holly (an appletross), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Hi Holly! I feel like I've asked you this before, but you go to Columbia right?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

yeah i don't think you have asled before. do you go to columbia?

Holly (an appletross), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Nope. I think I just remember you saying something a while ago about going to an art school that had rolling admissions. It may have been on the Noise Board.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

oh. yeah, curse that rolling admissions. i'm a cultural studies major though, and cultural studies undergrad programs are hard to find so unfortunately I go to COlumbia. every semester I think about leaving.

Holly (an appletross), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

this semester i got an A and 3 credits for a class I wasn't even enrolled in, so sometimes the shoddiness works in my favor though.

Holly (an appletross), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

My friend and drummer Ben works for Columbia and I am jealous because a) he does graphic design, which sounds fun; b) during the summer, they work 4-day weeks; and c) they now have the option to work 10-hour days four days a week and then take Monday or Friday off, year-round.

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 7 February 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

one of the Cultural Studies professors was on sabbatical in Puerto Rico last semester and this semester he's not teaching anything but he has an office and gets paid for being full-time faculty.

Anyone know of anything going on this weekend? Shows, especially. The Reader is blocked for me at work...

What's this I hear about the Fireside doing shows again?

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Yes! My band (Mama Digdown's Brass Band) is playing at the Green Mill both Friday and Saturday night. It should be really fun.

If some Chicagoans are thinking of going on one night or the other, let me know and I'll see what I can finagle re: the guest list.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

So one of Jordan's bands, Mama Digdown's Brass Band, is playing at the Green Mill tonight and tomorrow night. Sarah and I are going tonight.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

My workdays have been more boring without this thread.

Green Mill show tonight! Nick, Sarah, and Ben should be on the guest list.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh duh, you just said 9:00.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Sarah just came and visited me at the office! Apparently her new work is a 10-minute walk from my office. Neat.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Cool. That means we're all very close. We really should have lunch sometime. As soon as this issue is finished, I'll have the time.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Well, she only gets a half hour for lunch, and that combined with a 20-minute round trip doesn't leave much time for socializing.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Hey, can anyone tell me the fastest way to get from the freeway to the Green Mill? I'm have to leave a bit later than I would like, no time to fuck around.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Which freeway? The Kennedy?

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I have no clue, I was wondering myself how I'm going to get there tonight.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

From Lake Shore Drive, you just exit Lawrence. Nick, you can probably just as easily take Ashland or Damen all the way north to Lawrence.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm assuming you want Rte. 90 to get back up to Madison, in which case you should just go due west on Lawrence Ave. -- you'll hit the freeway in about 5 miles.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh oh, never mind, I thought you meant the other way around. Well, that works, too: just get off at Lawrence and go due east. (Heh.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Nick, you can probably just as easily take Ashland or Damen all the way north to Lawrence.

Ashland is much quicker than Damen, for the record. That's what I'd do if I were Nick.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

And Jordan: I guess I'm assuming there's a Lawrence exit. If not, you should just take whatever's closest, like Foster or Wilson or Montrose.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

xpost Or you can walk. It's only about 50 blocks.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Okay, thanks, I think that's what I did last time (getting off at Lawrence).

xpost

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

I don't really want to drive though. So maybe the Damen bus? Or just a taxi? Or just deal with it and drive?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like a pricey taxi ride, and you'll want to change buses at Lawrence, or else walk more than a mile from Damen to Broadway.

Fish fingers all in a line (kenan), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

Goddammit. Why is life so hard?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Division bus to the Red Line?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

There's a sizeable lot behind the Green Mill, but I think they may start charging a fair amount for it around showtime.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Damen bus to Lawrence bus?

i'm sorry i'll be missing out on the green mill tonight! i need to go to bed early b/c i have an interview at 115th & western tomorrow. AT 8:30 A.M.!!!!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

I never said how awesome that show was. IT WAS AWESOME! The Green Mill was really nice too, and it was super funky fresh hanging out with Jeff, Jenny, Jesse, and Robin. I wish I could have been drunker, stupid having to drive.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Nick! The Saturday night show was better, but that's how these things go I guess. I still feel terrible about the guest list thing btw, I had called ahead and asked one of the guys to put you cats down since we were running late.

I also wished I could have been drunker, since I got suckered into driving as well. It was a really great weekend though.

Coca Cola bear? Onion? Wow, I really missed out, didn't I?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

The journey of the bear went thusly:

Jazz clubgoer who was stalking --> nice waitress Kathleen (I think) who gave the bear to --> Chicago ilx0rs --> who gave the bear to me at the Mexican restaurant along with an onion, whose origins are unknown to me.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:25 (twenty years ago)

I missed out on the whole onion thing.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)
