post photos you have taken in London this year on this thread. title them and list the date and location where taken, including a link to the location on streetmap if you feel so inclined. make them small enough to appear on this thread (512x384 would be great as i'd love to compile them all at the end of the year) but feel free to provide an additional link to a larger version if you so wish.

This is a really great idea, but as I don't live in London I won't contribute. Any chance you could expand it to cover the whole of the UK (or start another thread) ?

I reckon everyone should follow Steve's sizing recommendations, because it makes the thread look nice.

looks almost Chicagoey that one (xpost)

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

try and go for sharpest quality too and avoid repetition here. i took a few of Broadgate neon square grid thing but few had decent focus! i took some more tonight and will upload tomorrow (not here tho)

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What a great idea. This one has very little sharpness cos it's just a detail of a 2272x1704 pic.

I would like that, as I've not taken any pics in London this year...

If I'm going to contribute to this thread on a regular basis I probably need better software than iPhoto Express - the resize has done bad things to this one.

That's the thing about the North Croydon hub - it's got some lovely views if you know where to look. I keep meaning to get a camera and take pictures from the bend on Biggin Hill at night - the whole of Surrey spread out like a blanket before you. Incredible, really.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

bloody copycat threads ;)

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 23:47 (twenty-one years ago)

WBS - it's amazing, I'm treated to that view from the top deck of the X68 every morning. What is that big white building over to the southwest? It looks about as far away as the Ikea towers but way to the right as you look south.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 11:38 (twenty-one years ago)

How do I put a photo here? What if it's massive (about 2000 by 2000)?

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You won't get a photo that big onto the page, nu-ILX doesn't allow it. Best to resize it to 320x240, then put an i before the pic URL.

If you can't resize it, its better to just link to the picture.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike - no, I'm talking about a third of the way down Biggin Hill, not Beulah - the road that goes down the side of the Norfolk Court hotel (X68 definitely doesn't go down that way). There's this bit where the road curves and dips round to the left, with the allotments sloping down ahead of you, then there's all the houses, the whole of Croydon, the downs... marvellous, really.

As for yer big white building - only thing I can think of is the White House, but that's pretty much atop Streatham Common, which, though it is way to the right, is an awful, awful lot nearer than the IKEA Towers.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever walked down Biggin Hill - I must go down there. I guess the view from the bus is more SW London fringe. It could well be the White House; I imagine I'm having the old Father Dougal distance/size dissonance again. Ooh, look at the tiny people!

That classless room photo is brilliant. Where was that taken? Is it an actual classroom* or some sort of trendy art installation.

*And if it is, what were you doing in there?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 19 January 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

See the link for where it was taken. It is not a trendy art installation. I was not actually in there and took the photo behind the window standing outside looking in.

I was taking pictures of someone's bicycles the other day, and the guy comes out of the store and starts grilling me on why I'm taking pictures of his bicycle. "What, there's something real interesting about that sprocket?" He was genuinely upset. Also, he was missing all his front teeth. Scary indeed.

It's a shame this thread takes so long to load on dial-up (and is difficult to contribute to from home for similar reasons).

Glorious stuff (I'm still digging the crazy all-blue-all-the-time filtering on JtN's camera).

I'd be self-indulgent and post some pictures of Mayday Hospital (well, a certain individual at Mayday last week), but that crosses the line into Surrey.

Hah, no.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I am pretty sure it's Queens Park.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I know I always say this but I really mean it this time, best thread ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know Queens Park station very well, but I know how it's laid out (two islands, Underground lines in the centre, Watford DC lines on the outside - that's right, isn't it?). If it *is* Queens Park, then that must be the Up DC platform, and I wouldn't have *thought* that that would have a centre rail. Although, looking again, there aren't any LU-style cable runs by the line, and the "do not trespass" signs look more like Network Rail ones than LU ones. So, you might be right (but I'm not 100% convinced). I can't remember whether the DC Lines are fitted for OMO working (ie, the big mirror) or not.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 09:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure that's looking down the Silverlink track towards Kilburn High Road, and eventually Euston. You can see the wall of my old back garden from 1996 through the tunnel.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 10:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, the Up DC line. The fourth rail foxed me somewhat, into thinking that it would be an LU station.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The blues in JtN's photos from 19 February, esp. St. Augustine's and Little Venice 2, are amazing!

Sven Basted (blueski), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

I think I've solved the pixel thing. If I use the 'blur' filter before I resize them it's a lot better. Here's that Canary Wharf one from upthread, but a lot easier to look at:

I love the What Ever Happened to Slade? Graffitti. Well, they put out a forgettable album or two in the 80's and then wisely parted ways.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

i wouldn't bother Jamie as the blur function doesn't really do significantly more justice to the excellent photos. does Camedia let you alter the number of dpi? in Photoshop reducing dpi to 72 automatically resamples the image to a smaller size. otherwise you could try The Gimp as koogs suggests.

Sven Basted (blueski), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

> So should I delete everything I've posted so far, sort them out, then repost them?

just upload new versions over the old versions (if you can) and the pictures upthread will magically update.

is this true? surely if you have a 300dpi image 600 pixels wide (600/300 = 2 inches) and change resolution to 75dpi it's now 600/75 = 8 inches wide.

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Not if you go via "resize image" and have the Bicubic sampling checkbox ticked.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

just upload new versions over the old versions (if you can) and the pictures upthread will magically update

done it for most of them now

The Horse of Babylon (the pirate king), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I just resize by percentages usually...I'm set to 1024 by 768 - so I reduce by 50%. I use ArcSoft Photostudio 2000, it's kinda old, but I think it works pretty well.

I think the person who wrote WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SLADE? probably knows what happened to Slade. It is a FALSE GRAFFITO.

I enjoyed the photo of a helicopter taken from the bottom of an enormous toilet bowl.

Paddington roof has holes in it, I found out this morning.

I liked it when Jerry the Nipper went for a walk along the canal like what I did once.

I like the one of Lixi at the station and object to the idea expressed above that she is somehow not a person.

I am 'putting up resistance' to the idea that unavoidable blurring is somehow good.

Otherwise, very good, well done. You seem like a nice bunch.

I reckon that Audi is ripe for breaking in and nicking some Corrs CDs.

i wouldn't have guessed that the type of people who break into cars are also the type of people who enjoy the music of The Corrs.

RE: 'the blur thing'

Maybe when you re-size you have re-sample turned off. You should have the best (slowest) sort selected, like bi-cubic or something.

(It's usually worth sharpening a bit after re-sizing too.)

mei (mei), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I don't have a re-sample option, unfortunately, but I can do stuff like this:

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

that's a good question, but I remember taking the photo looking right from the bridge as we came back from Ava's house, so that'd make it on the wrong side of the river, so I'm not too certain what it is

ceebee, Wednesday, 13 April 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

That's weird, cos this (deliberately too big cos it's a 2004 photo and I don't want to clutter up the thread):

ihttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v426/Pernfors88/NEW0007.jpg

..is looking right while facing north (or 'facing east' as I believe some people like to call it). Oh, hang on - you said London Bridge (this is from Waterloo Bridge - bend in the river an' all that). All bets are off.

Can everyone please call it "Ava's house" from now on?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Chris, if you were taking the photo looking right, then you'd have had to have leaned across me, or stretched the camera across to the back seat, as you were sitting in the passenger seat. I think that it's the left hand side of the bridge, so yes, it is st pauls.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm kicking myself for not having my camera with me this morning (the first really frosty London morning of the autumn) - from the top of Gipsy Hill, the tops of the tallest central London buildings were cast adrift in an icy haze, with St Luke's in West Norwood clear in the foreground. It looked like a city in the sky. You'll just have to imagine it.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 14 November 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

With modern digital cameras, you can take any old full moon and ramp up the brightness, so no need! Also it's not as if the difference was spectacular. One could still tell it was night, for instance.
