Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

hrm do you guys use pacbell or comacast in SF?

svend (svend), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

ugh comcast

svend (svend), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:06 (twenty years ago)

I use SBC. Cable is to fucking expensive.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:07 (twenty years ago)

dsl for me is 49.95 anyways, so think of switching.

svend (svend), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

thinking, sorry

svend (svend), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

My gf pays the huge cable bill. (Freeloader am me)

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

SBC DSL is $26.95 or so right now, plus $5 in goofy ass fees of course.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

Our system indicates that you already have DSL Internet service installed on this phone line, or you have already placed an order.

I guess I need to tell them not to charge me the 49.99 :)

svend (svend), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh. *puts down gin* I use pacbell DSL until they boost the price.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:15 (twenty years ago)

I have had it since the start, maybe it just involves switching the name to my gf's from mine to get the cheapy version. I'm still waiting for them to cancel my account for download 100 gigs a month or more though.

svend (svend), Thursday, 3 February 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

Just borrow your neighbor's open WiFi connection.

Unless you're my neighbor.

mikef (mfleming), Thursday, 3 February 2005 06:49 (twenty years ago)

Hello, I am stopping by briefly to mention that s1ocki is in town (or on his way) as of today and I'll maybe be seeing him tonight or tomorrow evening and definitely Saturday for his movie screening if anyone wants to meet up.

Bye!

Exile on Montgomery St (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 February 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

they have internet access in jail now?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

i use comcast btw since I also have digital cable and it's only $45 a month although they fucked up my bill for months. I had the @home service years ago, switched to DSL when they went down, but DSL never worked very well for me, dropped connections all the time (this might have been my router, don't know). Anyway both options are more expensive than they should be.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

i use SBC DSL @ $26.95, they have a faster DSL service now for $34.95.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

It's obv not unlimited.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

this price goes up after a period of time though (the SBC price); maybe they give you a full year these days.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

so i don't get it, did adam get scolded for his internet activity?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

he hates you all

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

it was all that scotland talk

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

I think we signed on for a year at the $26.95 introductory rate.

xpost

He must have 'cause his posting rate has dived precipitously over the last three days.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 3 February 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

He told me in an e-mail that he is just trying to cut back.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

How admirable.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

hi guys! san francisco is nice!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 6 February 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

for some weird reason i can't use apple's mail program on the wireless in the hostel though. i can get but not send! FREAKY DEAKY

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 6 February 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

are you going to Nickie's to this grime thing? I believe adam and alex are already there. I will be leaving berkeley, uh, at some point.

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 6 February 2005 03:45 (twenty years ago)

i did not go there. i went to a festival party and got drunk and stuff.

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 6 February 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki, I got both yr messages and tried calling you back but it isn't working (because it's a payphone?)! I have got some stuff to do for my class today (editing!) at home but maybe I can catch up with you later.

If not...what are your plans for tomorrow late afternoon/early evening?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Adam, did you enjoy the show (after you left I got KK to play "POW" his DJ partner had a copy)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

I loved it! Oh no Pow! :(

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Sunday, 6 February 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

Haha you got a song DEDICATED to you! YOU should love it!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I seriously hope they will do a monthly thing though. That would make me soooooo happy!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 6 February 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

I am sad we had to leave a little early. I will definitely go back every month for as long as it is on.

and yeah, that was pretty cool, the DJ bigging me up. That guy will go far.

Seriously though, I will never, ever eat a burrito before dancing again. I'd explain why, but it's just gross.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I was actually feelin' kind bloated by the end myself. We stayed until the end of Kameleon's set and said our goodbyes and then headed home and were tucked in before 2am. I am clearly not as young as I used to be.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

fuck you all for finding parking!

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 7 February 2005 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I couldn't believe that. You guys were looking forever! That's crazy talk!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

45 minutes of circling. then we finally just sat at the end of the street and waited for someone to pull out, and then about six cop cars pulled up right in front of us and arrested some guy, so we decided to leave. parking around there is always terrible but that was pretty ridiculous. if I go next time I'm making adam drive me.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 7 February 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Sarah drove me home. I was zoned out on a mixture of beer and caffeine and cold medicine and I kept belching up burrito grease.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

We obv parked much much earlier. Adam had amazing parking karma though. Got a spot right between the restaurant and the club.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 00:44 (twenty years ago)

tomorrow could be cool adam!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

Okay, well I was maybe thinking of getting something to eat (sushi was mentioned) and then adjourning to a local ale house. Ppl feel free to throw up suggestions. Is there anywhere suitable near EZ5 (I think gygax said upthreadf that the answer is no)? I still like that place!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

after a totally weird "SF is a small town" experience yesterday I had yet another just now - the Albino guy that always goes to the same shows as me and Alex was in my yoga class!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

!!! Did you talk to him (say YES!)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Near EZ5? No, I don't think so. There's good sushi near my place though (Midori Mushi and uh the other place on Market btw Guerrero and Valencia. . . I forget the name.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:37 (twenty years ago)

yoga!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

hey guys can i ask another sf question? i need to replace my headphones and i was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for electronics shopping, are there any stores/neighbourhoods where i might get a good deal? chinatown?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

The reasons to visit Chinatown only seem to grow with time. (I don't know anywhere specific, also Japantown might be worth a try).

yoga!!

Hell yeah. And no, I did not talk to him, he was too busy extending himself to assume Downward Dog.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:42 (twenty years ago)

I would not go to Chinatown for that unless you want to get crap electronics. I'd just go to a Best Buy or a Circuit City.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Slocki, you could make a trip down the penninsula and see another great wonder of the bay area: Fry's. The nearest one to SF, though, is in Palo Alto.

Although I guess they have Fry's all over the country now.

You should go to Chinatown, but maybe not for headphones. Go to the kite store and the fortune cookie factory.

mikef (mfleming), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

There's good sushi near my place though (Midori Mushi and uh the other place on Market btw Guerrero and Valencia. . . I forget the name.)

sushi zone. i love this place

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:16 (twenty years ago)

That's it! Yeah it's quite good, but both of these places get really busy so you gotta either get there early or be ready to wait.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:18 (twenty years ago)

But the plus side to both is that they are pretty near Zeitgeist and the Orbit Room and a whole bunch of other staple SF bars.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

Zeitgeist could be good...

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:21 (twenty years ago)

Man, s1ocki, if nothing else I am gonna have a ton of FCP questions for you, I'm struggling with it right now and it's been too long since I've done this. I bet you can't wait!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 05:22 (twenty years ago)

adam, this one's for you:

New Bay represent!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

dudes,

I am feeling sick and probly going to leave work early today! I know we didn't make any specific plans, and I haven't heard from s1ocki, so maybe we should make it another night this week? I can do any day except tomorrow because of class.

s1ocki - call me if you can, I know it's a hassle calling a 510 number, also as kyle will attest I am not good at hearing my ringtone! (I have changed it now to the most annoying ringtone EVER in order to compensate for this)

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

i still never met up w/shakey mo last week. he told me tuesdays and thursdays are good for him, and i'm thinking thursday would be good (i still haven't confirmed with him, so this might not go through again?). mission area?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

tHURSDAY @ zEITGEIST/sUSHI zONE?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

Haha you got a song DEDICATED to you! YOU should love it!

What prompted this?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

matmos is playing in the marina on thursday, i'm going.

j, i have something for you to give to his bandmate, can we hook up b4 hand?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

What prompted this?

A good question. The answer is twofold.

a) the song in question was some kind of amazing Dr Who theme/DnB mashup and I, being English, found it particularly charming
b) more importantly, I was chatting with said DJ before his set and it turned out that we had a frightneningly similar work history (he had just finished temping at my current workplace and was now going back to his full-time gig at my former place of employment down the street).

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 February 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

i'm feeling a little under the weather myself! but yeah, it would probably be better to reschedule. i'll totally call you!

and sushi = YES YES YES

gygax and I took the bus again together. I'm worried people are going to talk.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

people do talk. that is one of their primary modes of communication.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Feeling better?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

so so

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

I ate indian food and watched Snake Eyes.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I'm going to be able to see Slocki now. I am booked for the rest of the week.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

so far i bought:

morgan geist - unclassics (finally)
giorgio moroder - best of (impulse buy, there's some good stuff on it though (i am regretting it a tiny bit tho))
dr buzzard's original savannah band - the first 2 albs
dj /rupture - minesweeper suite

AND THERE IS SO MUCH MORE I WANT!!! i forget to check if mixed up in the hague was there, does anybody know?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

btw, s1ocki, i've bought or listened to all of those purchases in the past few weeks. (well i don't have the 2nd dr. buzzard)

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

why do you regret the moroder best of? i have a 2 or 3lp best of, and it's obviously the fucking bizness, but i already have most of it on his other albums.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

i don't really regret it!! just wish it was the best of him including collabos, instead of his early acoustic stuff.

nice to have from here to eternity on cd (and nnot just scratchy old vinyl) though. fuck that song rocks the block.

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

How long are you in town, slocki?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki... i am gonna send you a line and see if you want to test out your food critic skills sometime soon (ie, tonight?).

i'm in town till sunday morning!

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

is Zeitgeist still on for tomorrow?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

is it? what's zeitgeist? and where is it and how do i get there?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

and what do i do when i get there?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 04:22 (twenty years ago)

it's a biker/rocker/hipster bar that has an outdoor area. i'm not so sure the outdoor area is all that appealing right now, being that it's not really that warm, but it's a cool bar.

http://www.sonic.net/~wwpints/zeitgeist/

it's near a really cool used record store that i may go to before hand, but because of this thread, i may have to sneak any purchases inside the house.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 05:10 (twenty years ago)

It looks like we might meet at Sushi Zone at 6 and then maybe hit Zeitgeist? or not? This is a democracy.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 05:14 (twenty years ago)

how many of you guys are going to sushi? that place is always pretty crazy, and there are only 2 tables of 4 each and a bar that holds 6, so unless you get there right when it opens (pretty hard w/jobs), you're gonna have to wait almost an hour for a table and then maybe 30 min for food. hope i'm not a party killer, but it really is worth it though, so hopefully you'll get lucky and i eat my words.

my faves: spicy hamachi (with lime and jalepeno), hawaiian #1 (whichever one doesn't have mango - they both have macadamian nutz), and the salmon with dill on top. mmmmmm. it's pretty much my regular sushi place

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

how many of you guys are going to sushi?

errrr, me. Maybe Alex.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:00 (twenty years ago)

haha, shouldn't be a problem. i'll give you a call after work to find out what's going on. maybe, i'll have sushi w/you

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:02 (twenty years ago)

i'm in for sushi! when? and where?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:17 (twenty years ago)

Hi dere. I think I'm coming up again soon, but without my nutter uncle. With my nutter roommate.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:21 (twenty years ago)

when? i guess not as soon as this weekend--i'd luv for you to come see my movie

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:22 (twenty years ago)

Gah, can't. I have to supervise an ADR session on Saturday. Do you have any DVD prints yet?

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:24 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, i totally do. (made 'em myself!) i'll send you one when i get back if you like.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

very much -- is the email address valid? I'll pop you over my mailing address.

Remy (x Jeremy), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:27 (twenty years ago)

i'm watching this show on A&E called San Francisco Vice, and it's all about cops patrolling for prostitution. one of the spots they're constantly picking johns up is right up the street from me at 10th and mission in front of king's burgers!

then they showed an unpermited massage house in the sunset that housed a whole slew of "young, very attractive, high class prostitutes".

man, this show is fun.

xxx-post, slocki, are you showing it anywhere while you're here?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

DUDE, have you even been reading? :)

s1ocki, we were talking about meeting @ Sushi Zone @ 6. I don't know where it is?

We are watching Garden State. It's boring.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:33 (twenty years ago)

DUDE, have you even been reading? :)

this to me?

actually, not really. i sorta zone out half the time.

i think most of the movie showing posts are in the last thread anyways.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:38 (twenty years ago)

Sushi Zone is at the corner of Pearl (a tiny little alley street between Guerrero and Valencia) & Market. it's around the corner from said record store and the film bookstore i think you guys were talking about earlier. also around the corner, for reference, is DLX skate shop and Destino, a peruvian restaurant.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 06:41 (twenty years ago)

what's the best way to get there from 21st & mission?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 07:29 (twenty years ago)

also jason, check this:

http://sfindie.com/indiefest05/films/the_recommendations.htm

you should come!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

what's the best way to get there from 21st & mission?

-- s1ocki (slytus...), February 9th, 2005 11:29 PM. (slutsky)

Take the #14 bus up from 21st towards downtown/ferry terminal 8 blocks to 13th Street/Duboce Street (this can be confusing as Duboce is essentially 13th street, just get off after 14th street). Upon exiting, go west (on Duboce), away from the construction (notable landmark: you will pass Zeitgeist on your right when you pass Duboce/Valencia). Continue straight (uphill on Duboce) for 2/3rds of a block and you will see an alley on the right side of the street named Pearl (should be after Elgin and before Guerrero). Make a right into the alley and continue uphill until you almost hit the busy street (market) and look to your right and you will see "Sushi Zone", a hawaiian-style sushi bar.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 February 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh also I am sorry I can't make it, I will be at the Exploratorium for the early Matmos show but let me know what you guys are doing afterward and I can meet up possibly?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 February 2005 08:00 (twenty years ago)

do i need to buy presale tickets? not sure if i'm gonna make it (want to, looks good) and that buy link on the site goes nowhere.

xxxxxpost (damn) also, from 21rst and mission (this is 4blocks from my work - 21rst & Harrison), you can either take the 14 bus ($1.25), or if you want to walk (i will be - it's 1.8 miles). you can go down mission, turn left on duboce, turn right on pearl.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

tickets was in regard to the movie showing

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

That indie fest is rubbish by the way - there's no guests and the guy that runs it is a nasty piece of work and has been so to some very good friends of mine.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Well Slocki's film is very funny (and they were there talking to the audience--does that make them "guests"?) and I wouldn't have seen if not for the fest so there ya go. I have no idea if the guy that runs is a shit or not though (wouldn't shock me though.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

I’ve never met the guy who ran it but he was nasty to not only the organisers of Fearless (from before I was involved by the way) but to a young filmmaker friend of mine. Some of the films are fine and – again – I’ve never met him. To my knowledge the more horror fests the better. I hope you make ours this year, and certainly we try as hard as anyone to put on a good show.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 February 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

I am filmmaker.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Hear him roar.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 10 February 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, like I said, good luck to them but anyone who is shitty to my friends is no friend of mine.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

I'm so suspicious whether it even is Calum anymore. There are so many fake Calum's running around it is tough to keep track of them.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh please.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Fangoria still exists?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

haha!

the people behind the festival have been nothing but incredibly great to us.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

(and they do run a horror fest too)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

(jason are you sure you clicked on the right "buy tix" link? there's an outdated one for the feb 5 screening that doesn't work no more.)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 10 February 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, you're right. so do i need presale tix or do you think there will be tickets at the door?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Haha I didn't even notice that my online name was on that pic. How funny.

San Francisco rules.

Just for the record.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

It is a wonderful town--although I am jealous that NYC is getting Jammer, D Double AND Ears for their BIG grime night whereas ours may be totally stillborn :(

If you lived in London, these people would serenade you on the Underground on your way to work, every day, for FREE!!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

...and then ask when you want your breakfast!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

When is your grime night Alex?

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Well it was last Saturday. Theoretically it was supposed to be the first Saturday of every month, but now it looks like it won't be due to crazzzy club politics.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

the should move it out of that lousy hippy infested neighborhood anyway!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Haha the Lower Haight isn't that hippy-ish!! It's probably the most mixed neighborhood in the city (next to the part of the Western Addition I just moved from maybe.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

I saw at least three hippies while I was looking for parking. Two of them were shortly under the WHEELS OF MY CAR

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

that club has a GRATEFUL DEAD BBQ NIGHT

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

If you have anything book while I'm in town lemme know.

C-Man (C-Man), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:37 (twenty years ago)

i'm just saying there must be somewhere better where I can PARK

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

The Lower Haight is all vinyl and DJ turntables. Ask gygax.

I am going to put on my own grime night, then. In Walnut Creek.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

And hair salons, adam. Let's not forget the hair salons.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah there are more hair salons per person in the Lower Haight than anywhere else in the world.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

yes my wife gets her hair cut down here

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 February 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

The most unusual thing about the Lower Haight is that of the 25 or so restaurants in the area, about 1/3 of them are either Ethiopian/Eritrean or Indian/Pakistani.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

worst hair salon name ever = W.A.K. SHACK

michael, thanks

i think i'm going to matmos with gygax tonight.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

shit, just as i typed that i see it's "mostly sold out". guh.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that show looks good....

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

The woman in the office next to mine is speaking on the phone to a client who will be visiting SF soon and telling him "we'll go to Union St, there's always a lot of girls in their 20s, a lot of BABES".

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Marina chicks are ghastly!

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

I'll be in the Marina tonight (Union Street is Cow Hollow?).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

why is a female coworker trolling for chicks for a male client? that's just.... ew.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

Union Street is Cow Hollow but Union/Chestnut are largely same crowd. I used to live down there and hated it.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

I like Betelnut

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

Betelnut is good. I probably know some of the old Perry's bartenders. Dragon Well on Chestnut is OK. Marina Lounge. Izzy's. I still know lot's of the crew at the Brazen Head.

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 10 February 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

i'm not so sure the outdoor area is all that appealing right now, being that it's not really that warm, but it's a cool bar.

it is 65 today!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's pretty great out today.

ok, i'm leaving work. i'm gonna try to meat (hehe) up with gygax and go to the exploratorium. i'll give you a call adam later to see where you guys are and maybe we'll get a drink.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

tell gygax I said...

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

JaX0n-

I'll call you in about 20 mins.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Yes. Adam and I will be there at 6pm.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

I have to go to a birthday party tonight. What are you up to tomorrow evening, slocki?

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure michael! there's a festival party (which will probably be not so great), but i'm up for partying.

alex and adam: i may be about 15 mins late, is that ok?

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:56 (twenty years ago)

no problem!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

I feel not well this morning. I think the last three beers (after the Sparxxx after the other beer after the saki) were a bad idea.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

beer after sparks, spins in the dark(s)

Sparks after sake, whoo, I feel whacky

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

I feel sincerely not wacky right now. The bitters and soda are beginning to settle my stomach. Actually my desk is like a walking ad for the fact that I am hungover right now between the huge bottle of soda water, the bitters and the Wal-profen tablets spilled everywhere. And WOO HOO I have morning conference calls. I just know I'm gonna crabby for those.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 February 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

There's a bar in SF that is up from the Victoria that has a great jukebox.

I slept about 6 hours a night in SF. It's the best party town ever cos it's cheaper than LA. March is gonna rock.

C-Man (C-Man), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

I didn't really sleep. I feel bad.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I can only imagine how bad I would feel right now if I hadn't slept. You have my sympathy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

adam, any bed people?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

no bed ppl.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

i barely slept too. i thought i was gonna puke. sparks made my stomach crazy.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

What is with you young people and your weird drug habits? Drink simple drinks and do simple drugs! Sheesh!

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

In the past 48hrs I have drank brandy, red wine, sake, beer, scotch, and SPARKS. I feel bad!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

just a bit of fun, lets all be cool

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

adam, that's like Ba'al's Long Island Ice Tea recipe, isn't it?

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

mark, how long is your movie? i have pre-valentines-day-so-we-don't-have-to-pay-valentines-day-prefix-prices diner on saturday on the earlier side.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

I had a big burger for lunch and now I feel marginally better. I think I may go to Amoeba after work now (as opposed to going home and burying my head under pillows.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I am eating Subway and drinking gallons of coffee!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:08 (twenty years ago)

I am still drinking funny colored sparkling water.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 11 February 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 12 February 2005 06:26 (twenty years ago)

Is your movie digital or shot on 35mm?

C-Man (C-Man), Sunday, 13 February 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

mark, sorry i couldn't make it to the movie, i really wanted to but Vday plans and the lady come first :)

hope you had a good time out here and it was nice meeting you. i'll send my friend that just moved to Montreal your email (is that it in yr posts?)

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Sunday, 13 February 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

that's the one!!

and i'm tired now, i just got in, but big thank-you nice-to-meet-you post to come soon.

also c-man the movie is digital.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 February 2005 08:31 (twenty years ago)

you left out the 16mm option though!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 February 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

True, I did. We have one slot left for a 16mm/ 35mm showing if anyone knows of/ or has anything of interest.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

Have you seen Dead Birds, Calum?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

No.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0377749/

This one right? It's not an indie fest film is it?

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it was in the SF Indie film fest. I saw it last night (friend got me on the list. . . it was completely sold out and there was good audience response.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

It might have been an option but we're not showing anything that's been at indie fest. I have a few possible options, including a Sundance premiere, but it people drag their feet...

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:28 (twenty years ago)

Are you coming along to Fearless btw?

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:29 (twenty years ago)

Of course. I'm gonna try to see The Candy Snatchers and Deep Red at the very least.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Try and make the Landis and HG Lewis nights. Introduce yourself.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I will try. Is the actual schedule and times up somewhere? Or is it still up in the air?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

John is definately Friday 1st April at 7pm - two films of his and Q and A afterwards.

Tim Sullivan for 2001 Maniacs is 9pm, Q and A/ preview after original 2000 Maniacs. Party for John at Meedjpool afterwards with all guests there.

Saturday 2nd at 7pm is Jeff Burr, two films/ Q and A.

Mike's hoping to have times online tonight.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

is that the medjool on mission c-man? cuz that's where i stayed!!

how was dead birds alex? that was unfortunately conflicting with my friends' film, i hope they still got a good turnout.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

It was pretty good. It's kind of a cross between every evil house/cabin movie ever, The Ring and Ride With The Devil. Some neat effects and gore, clever references, good music and decent nice scares. It's definitely better film than Cabin Fever which was referenced in the little blurb on the poster. The director also showed a short film he did too which was also nicely done (and had really production values.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:24 (twenty years ago)

i don't like cabin fever. but the trailer for dead birds looked good, like a western haunted house movie (which is i guess what you just said!)

anyway dudes, it was really great to hang out with you all, you really made me feel welcome & my only regret is that i was too busy with biz/festival stuff to make it out more. i really loved sf & i can't wait to go back!!

oh and tipoff: taste of tea is playing again, i didn't make it becuz we were drinking sparks but my it completely blew my friends' minds. go see it tomorrow!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Featuring DJs Carlos D of Interpol, The Lovemakers, Gold Chains, Omar,Aaron, Sean, Nako, and Disco Shawn.

Carlos D, the beloved bassist for Interpol, hardly needs to pursue a career as a DJ. He could easily pursue the typical bass-player lifestyle: Get smashed onstage because everyone's watching the singer, fondle someone backstage, vomit behind a dumpster, pass out in the bus. But little Carlos can't seem to stop -- or sleep. And, by all accounts, he gives no rest to those who attend his famous afterparties in New York City clubs, where Mr. D. keeps the floor packed sometimes until 10 a.m. What makes this ashen-faced lad so successful as a DJ, we think, is his apparent "take it and like it" attitude, clear not only in his confidence at the turntables but also in his gothic speakeasy attire -- complete with leather shoulder holster -- and especially in the almost immediate silencing of blogger allegations that the famous bassist had passed around a bit of the ol' HSV.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

"how could anyone dislike Cabin Fever?!"

I didn't dislike it, but I didn't love it either. It was just kind of meh.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I didn't like Cabin Fever. Guys, my knowledge of San Francisco aint too great - but there are directions to Medjpool at www.fearlesstales.com We hired out the Werepad last year for Tobe Hooper and Jack Hill and that was pretty good.

More dates and times:

Matt Cimber is on the Weds at 7pm at the Victoria. He's screening "Hundra" and "The Witch who came from the Sea", which is an interesting "video nasty".

I think The Candy Snatchers might be a Friday 1.30pm showing - sorry if anyone misses it. All the Castro films are excellent though.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

1:30pm!!! What kind of showing is that?!?! You guys are aware that people in America work on Fridays, right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

gygax doesn't

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 February 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

you guys are crazy! snobs and crazy!

PANCAKES!!!

http://www.art-ificial.com/indie/cabin_fever.gif

(i just spent way too much time taking screengrabs of the trailer and making a gif, but it's oh so worth it)

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Whatever.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Yip, sorry Alex. We have spaces to fill there and gave the more prime time slots to the premieres and the Q and A stuff.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of baffled why you have any movies showing at 1:30pm on a Friday. On a weekend day, I get. At 4-4:30 I can even understand. How many people can go to movies midafternoon on weekday though?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

It comes down to The Castro having slots available for Fearless and us filling them with something more than anything else. I would not expect a big turnout for Candy Snatchers, personally.

C-Man (C-Man), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:24 (twenty years ago)

Well if it really is showing then, I might try to take a crazy long lunch that day. That really is too bad though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 February 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

If you have to make any films make My Little Eye. It has en ending that hits in you the guts for days afterwards.

totally o/t but allison saw rosario dawson at Trader Joes on bryant and 9th (one block from my house) this weekend and i was too tired to go see her :(

she is the beautiful

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Was she doing a signing or something at Trader Joe's?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

You're so jaded, Jason.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

just shopping

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

She is beautiful enough to walk a block to gawk at.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Is she one of those rare celebs who looks good IRL. I am constantly shocked upon seeing stars (Pamela Anderson, Courtney Cox, Cameron Diaz--none of whom I think is particularly attractive anyway) how terribly freakish they all looked. Just bone-y or badly madeup or misshapen or all three (I swear Diaz skull was so large she looked like a bobble head and Anderson looked like someone applied her make-up like spackle--airbrushing is clearly her friend.) But I could see Dawson still be very beautiful.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

allison said she was HAWT!!. and she was just wearing sweats or something.

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

Well maybe we should all shop at that Trader Joe's more often then.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I forgot to use 'stalk'.

http://us.movies1.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/columbia_pictures/men_in_black_ii/rosario_dawson/mibpre2.jpg

From the Men in Black permiere 3 yrs ago. Hair's been done and she has a modest amount of makeup but this is just a news photo and she looks charming.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Your concept of modest is FAR FAR different from mine, Michael.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps, but she's not wearing obsecene amounts of foundation, nor excessive eyeshadow/mascara, nor a particularly showy lipstick.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

So not looking like Dame Edna is modest, okay, I can dig it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Dude, if you were a hot chick with an acting career, there's every reason to think you would be more made up than that at a premiere.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

Haha yeah but I WOULD BE GOING FOR THE DAME EDNA LOOK!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

hack = quantity over quality, with a penchant for remaining faithful to genre conventions and canonized sources

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

whoops! wrong thread!

Alex if we ever meet and you don't look like Dame Edna I'm going to be very disappointed.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

I don't know if Alex can pull of the Australian accent though.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

"Alex if we ever meet and you don't look like Dame Edna I'm going to be very disappointed."

I will do my best not to disappoint you, Shakey, but I should warn you that I lack Edna's rather imposing physique.

So who is going to the Tim Sweeney thing at Club Six this Sunday? I know Adam is away, but JaX0N, Gygax!, kyle?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

i'm only interested in seeing Tim as Phil isn't going to be there, i have a friend in town who may/not be interested... what else is going on that night earlier?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

According to Flavorpill, exactly nothing.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

why is phil not showing up, isn't this his thing?

i'm pretty sure i'm going. it's my friends 30th bday and he lives right around the corner from club 6

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

"you know 30 year olds?"

Adam you know THIRTY year olds (and soon to be thirty year olds)!

How late is it going? 4am?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

I;m pretty sure Club Six closes at 2pm, unless they have a new permit.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

2am.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

The Mayer and Rephlex shows were until 4am.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

since my work is just the two of us, we usually don't take holidays off, but we have a lax 4weeks of vacation. i asked him if we could take monday off to honor all the dead presidents. plus if i'm going out on a sunday night, i'm gonna want my sleep the day after.

so wait, what's up w/phil?

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

phil is ill

I'm not going, I have a dinner date with my boss/friend. Also, I am playing at the hotel utah the night before. I'll fucking annoy you all with another spammy email about this. You can show up or not!

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

i miss sf

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

http://www.friendsof1800.org/HARDING/hardingtheater.html

Anybody following this?

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

No, but it looks pretty. I hope they don't demolish it and turn it into condos.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

I feel bad for these old theaters, but I also see how it would be really hard to keep them viable as businesses these days.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Well this theater hasn't been open in eons, I don't think.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 February 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Phoenecia plays a raved out thing at 1015 folsom tonight. They are on at 1 am or so. I am going. You should too. They rule. That is all.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

"Jim Siegel, a candidate for D5, made two offers to buy the building, with the intent to preserve the Harding for theatrical use. The building was sold for $1.6 million. Siegel was overbid by only $100,000. Another person from the neighborhood, Rohini Moradi, also said she has been working on similar plans for a restaurant/theater for Harding."

Pity.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

I realize that now, the name wasn't familiar. What do you do with these old places? What would be a good use for them that would maintain the architectural integrity? the idea of turning them into gyms like that one company does is bizarre and dumb. They would make cool clubs if the seats were taken out, I guess.

(xpost)

the last time I went to 1015 it was so gross. Is it still gross?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

there is an old theater in Berkeley that has been turned into a Long's. They kept the deco ceiling (this is on University at San Pablo). It is, uh, weird.

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

like that one company does is bizarre and dumb At least it keeps them from being torn down.

If someone put the money into them, they might make great venues/nightclubs.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

What did they end up doing with the Coliseum, Michael? Is it condos now?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

xpost

There is no reason to assume that 1015 is not hella gross. Proceed with caution, but Phoenecia are the point here.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Which one was the Coliseum, Alex?

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Between 8th and 9th on Clement. It was closed after '89 for retrofiting and then it sat abandoned for over a decade.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

I don't know.

Michael White (Hereward), Friday, 18 February 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

I need to find somewhere in the city or the East Bay to buy animal masks, pedestals, a temporary fence, possibly some kind of orb...for my film.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

If you find them in one place, let me know 'cause that'll be one heck of an emporium.

How was Yosemite?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Went to the bathroom in a cowboy bar.
Shaved by lamplight.
Sang the ballad o' the snowchains.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, didn't see the other thread.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

We had no news of the weather from around here, but driving back on 580, Sarah, ever the Midwesterner, looked at the sky to the North and said "the only time I've seen a sky like that is before/after a tornado". She was right.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

I would recommend going to Chinatown for all of that.

Adam, are you gonna come to Amoeba today?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

I can't!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Another thing about this weird country/Midwest sixth sense - we took a rest stop in Oakdale (home to a Starbuck's staffed entirely by rabidly attractive people,) and there was an awful smell on the wind. Sarah took one sniff and said "ah, a pig farm". And again, it turned out that she was right.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 23 February 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, is there such a thing as a temporary fence? One you can roll out wherever you like and then quickly collapse and transport elsehwere? It seems like there should be!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

White picket? Or mesh metal?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Special events companies have white picket fence for patios but it doesn't come so cheap. What do you need it for and how long?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Dude, just steal someones' fence. What are they gonna do? Shoot ya?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

WHite picket would be great, but it doesn't matter. I don't really have any money to spend, I'll have to improvise.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea where one finds fake white picket fences. I don't know anyone who has a real one either, actually.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:18 (twenty years ago)

you are all suckers for not coming to our debut show which kicked ass! actually i probably played better because hardly anyone I knew was there.

there is a real white picket fence a block from my house.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

They are calling Kyle the new IGGY now.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I will be in Alameda next week from 2/26 through 3/5 for work. What are my options for getting in and around the city? I have a rental car, but I hate driving. Also, is there any good events I should check out next week? Tanks in advance.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

From Alameda you get a ferry!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

Michael Mayer is at the Mighty on 3/4, I believe.

I don't go into the East Bay so I have no idea how to get around except by BART or car or walking.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

"you are all suckers for not coming to our debut show which kicked ass! actually i probably played better because hardly anyone I knew was there."

Sorry Kyle I was busy cleaning my old apartment, otherwise I would have come and made you play worse.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

For getting around you have Muni or feet!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Oh wait IN the city, yeah MUNI and feet is the way to go.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Ferry sounds good. Walking sounds even better. 3/4 is my bday!

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

happy birthday person I've never seen on ILX before!

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

xxxxpost:

If you hate driving, you will completely despise driving in SF.

There are 3 transbay buses from Alameda to the SF transbay terminal. It might be easier to take BART from downtown Oakland 12th street but you'd have to get there via the Oakland bus system (AC Transit).

Shows:
# Yellow Swans, Zeek Sheck, Chuck Bettis @ Hemlock, SF (2/26)
# Damon & Naomi w/ Vetiver @ Bottom of the Hill, SF (2/26)
# Tom Carter, Leavenworth, Jeff Gburek @ Hemlock, SF (3/1)
# Sage Francis @ Fillmore, SF (3/2)
# Xiu Xiu, Dead Science, Rum Diary @ Bottom of the Hill, SF (3/3)
# DMBQ* @ Hemlock SF (3/3) = *featuring members of OoioO
# Michael Mayer @ Mighty, SF (3/4)

(I will be trying to do both shows on the 3rd)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

DMBQ* featuring members of OoioO

this is like, the funniest set of opaque band names ever.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

DMBQ stands for:

Dynamite Masters Blues Quartet

they played with OoioO about 5 days ago in Tokyo.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

This is good info. Thanks. I will definitely try for DMBQ and/or Sage Francis.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

i remember cprek. you're friends with nickalious, right?

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

It might be easier to take BART from downtown Oakland 12th street but you'd have to get there via the Oakland bus system (AC Transit).

I did this while staying in Alameda, and it was pretty easy.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, the Alameda-SF ferry kicks up starting 3/1 (i think).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Yes that's right JaXon.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

I know cprek. You know an albino.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

See you on the dancefloor at Mayer, gygax.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I do know an albino. He plays the trumpet.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Thursday, 24 February 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

So I went to Chinatown and found lots of beautiful junk that I think I can use, but no masks! Don't children wear masks anymore?

Easily the BEST thing I saw was a series of pipes for sale, all with "PIPE" written on them in silvery-blue lettering and a picture of a distinguised mustachioed man on the packaging. They all had titles like "The Professional", "The Gentleman" and "The Author".

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

No "ceci est une"?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

I could make a rude joke here, in French.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

did anyone go to club six? i was home sick :(

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

but i was planning on playing annie (mylo remix), swv "anything" (remix), so weit wie noch nie, st etienne "he's on the phone", and justus kohncke (hot love). and some more faggy shit, so maybe it was best that i got sick and didnt ruin anyone's night.

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

I was home sore as a motherfucker. Stupid apartment cleaning.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

"This is not a blowjob", adam?

Michael White (Hereward), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

i planned on going to club 6, dropped my friends off at the door, went home to drop off the car (only a few blocks away) so i could drink a lot, went home, got stoned, started walking back to the club, it started pouring, so i went home.

anyways, i had 4 friends go.

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 24 February 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

fuck. did anyone go see Herbert last night :(

LaToya JaXoN (JasonD), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Nope. I thought about, but I never like going out on weeknights (even thought the Rickshaw is two blocks away from my house.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

In four weeks time I'll be on my way to SF. Fecking A! SF is, like, superior to just about anywhere. Although it draws with LA as coolest place ever. Actually, LA has more film stuff going on so it might win slightly.

Zarr, Friday, 25 February 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

film stuff!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

What time is the DMBQ show? I'm still on Eastern Time..

Also, I've randomly walked the city the past couple of nights and my wanderings have been limited to the Oakland Coliseum BART terminal and walking up Mission from 24th through 12th... Tell me where to go besides there. Thanks.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

anyone going to Michael Mayer on friday?

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:25 (twenty years ago)

what are you doing here for work? what's your schedule like?

go to the exploratorium, go to amoeba, go to citylights books, while you're there, go to some strip clubs

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

I'm keeping English hours, 9-5. I went to the Amoeba in Berkeley when I got in Sunday, so that's done. I haven't really hit anything touristy yet. I want to go to Chinatown at some point and see if I can find a Grace Chang CD. Problem is, most of my exploring is limited to the early evenings.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 07:04 (twenty years ago)

I am going to Michael Mayer on Friday. So is Alex, I reckon.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

I am! I just bought tickets.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I may or may not make that DMBQ show, I will be there right about showtime (12-12:30 if I do).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I may or may not make that DMBQ show, I will be there right about showtime (12-12:30 if I do).

according to your drunken phone call last night, you weren't gonna make the show because you were "gonna be outta town, pimping hoes, WESTSIIIIIIIDE!!!"

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Is gygax THE GAME?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

haha, drinking on an empty stomach with dj wobbly (thank you for the pizza slice though).

ggx!, Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

I ate pizza with kyle and watched the oscars

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Our Oscar party was fun. 20 some odd people. Much wine. Lots of food. Barely distracted by the awards themselves, I got to catch up with friends and enjoy myself.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I got into a fight in my class last night because I said that Million Dollar Baby was the worst film I saw all year and this other guy said well you must not see many movies and I said DUDE I spend my whole life watching movies you don't know what you are talking about. And then he asked me what I DID think was good and I said Bad Education and he hadn't heard of it.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Ruffian.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

i wanna see bad education, i just saw All About My Mother. it was pretty fucking rad. how does Bad Education compare?

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

i loved the way this scene looked so much i took a picture of my tv screen

http://www.art-ificial.com/indie/allAboutMyMother.jpg

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Bad Education is darker and more twisty. It is probably my favorite movie of 2004.

CCSF is a bit like Dangerous Minds sometimes. Some of the weird guys made a movie where you think two guys are going to a bathroom stall for illicit bathroom sex and it turns out that they are just rolling a joint.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

One guy just wears one of those Neighborhoodies, a LOWER HAIGHT Neighborhoodie, like every single week.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Which ILX0r is this?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

"Some of the weird guys made a movie where you think two guys are going to a bathroom stall for illicit bathroom sex and it turns out that they are just rolling a joint."

This sounds brilliant although the reverse would have been even better!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

MUCH better!

I think there is one guy that actually lives on campus. I always see him walking about with a rolled up sleeping bag. He has HUGE sideburns and loves the Ramones.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Even better though would have been if they had been going into the stall to shoot steroids and then at the end you find out that it's dramatic reenactment of the Jose Canseco/Mark McGwire story.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

Especially if after shooting the steroids they start flexing their muscles and making out.

As you can probably imagine, I have no idea what you are talking about!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

Homoeroticism in professional sports!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Homosteroidism in professional sports! Sorry Alex, but I'd really not like to think of anyone making out with Canseco.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

Well it would be two skinny CCSF hipsters making out so you would be spared the ACTUAL sight, Michael.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

I have been eating lunch in the Crocker Galleria! I am addicted to the cheap and very average sushi and gyoza!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:59 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

It's sad how excited I am to find a new downtown lunch spot.

ate pizza with kyle and watched the oscars

adam also gave us colds!

why were the oscars so boring?

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 March 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Did I really give you colds?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 March 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

I think so. that's okay though, it might have been our smelly coworkers.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 3 March 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

Well, I gave it to Sarah too. It is an awful cold, I can't breathe!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 3 March 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

thanks for the words of hope!

A late announcement:

http://www.fearlesstales.com/site/index.php?module=article&view=35

Yippee, one of the great Euro-horror directors makes it to the fest. Feeling damn good about this.

C-Var, Monday, 7 March 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

adam, alex, did you guys have fun at the mayer show friday night?

i was gonna make up some lie about how i went and just never saw you and was gonna ask if you were wearing banana suits or something, but in all reality, i bitched out. i had three friends that told me they were gonna go with me, and then when it finally came down to it, they all flaked, so i stayed home, got drunk and played vice city all night.

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

You could at least have stayed home to play a GOOD videogame.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

How was the weather here over the weekend?

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Haha we knew you bitched out, but yeah, it was a good time, JaX0N.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

The weather was fantastic.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I sat around a pool all day Sunday in nearly 80 degree wather. Every fruit tree was flamboyantly in bloom and the birds were chattering madly which was all that reminded me it's only March. I can't wait for spring/summer.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm normally not a big sunshine lollipops person but, after nearly 3 months of rain, murk, mold and general unpleasantness, I'm eagerly awaiting it too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

Every fruit tree was flamboyantly in bloom

Is this a euphemism?

xp- I think the only person who likes sunshine and outdoors LESS than you is kyle. What is wrong with you people???

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Not a euphemism, adam, not even exageration. It was very beautiful.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

The sun hurts my eyes. Also my skin. Also grey is my favorite color.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

You could at least have stayed home to play a GOOD videogame.

i got vice city free when i got the playstation. it's been sitting wrapped since xmas. finally opened it that night. we also have soul kaliber 2. the only game that actually gets played in our house is DDR

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

i hate the sun, and the rain, and the ocean.

but it was really nice this weekend

JaXoN Hole (JasonD), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Do y'all hate puppies and rainbows and ponies too?

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Michael are you an 8 year old girl or something? Are you going to have a hot pink Trapper Keeper under your arm next time I see you?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

No. Maybe, but it'll cost you extra.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm only paying more if your hair is crimped too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

There is a special hole in your head directly between your eyes and about halfway up your forehead (about where your third eye should be) that feeds on sunlight and it's important to keep it fed otherwise you get sad.

I love the ocean too!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

"There is a special hole in your head directly between your eyes and about halfway up your forehead (about where your third eye should be) that feeds on sunlight and it's important to keep it fed otherwise you get sad."

Adam, I know Mommy might've told you different, but that man got shot in the head and no amount of sunlight was gonna make him feel better.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Adam makes so much more sense now that I realize he has had trepanning done.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

I'm only paying more if your hair is crimped too.

Maybe I'll just send you Juliette Lewis on one of those days when she's off her meds. I can crimp her hair, put on her rainbow tube-top, and give her the Trapper Keeper w/the My Little Pony stickers on it.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Haha is that the crazy thing where they drill a hole in your head so as to "allow it to breath"?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Juliet Lewis is on meds?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

one of those days she's off her meds

I forgot to check. I think there's about 364 days per anuum when she's 'off her meds'.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I like Juliette Lewis.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Monday, 7 March 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

http://web.archive.org/web/20010331181116/www.thematrix.com/~sherrod/diary.html

anyone remember this? (found diary of teenage junkie girl in SF) i just rediscovered it in my bookmarks

Aaron A., Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

gnarly. i'll read this tomorrow at work.

this is sort of what the new mars volta is based on. one of em found a diary of some random kid and finished it in his voice. he then passed away from an overdose and the rest of the band based the album on it.

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

Wow. Amazing. I just read that in its entirety. I have a new respect for the friends of mine who have sucessfully quit using junk. Jesus.

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

Fuckin' Websense filtering. Grrr.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

yeah, Alex. Me too.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

What is it about the web.archive that angers Websense so?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

I am screening my first experimental kinowerk this evening and the film still isn't back from the lab!

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

OH NO!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Everything in my life is like this!

(It can't be MY fault!)

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)

Living dangerously, eh adam? Are you going to get it back from the lab today?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I had to send it down to LA so hopefully it will be in my mailbox when I get back from work.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Can we talk about The Mission?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

gygax says he doesn't like it.

kyle likes it.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

The neighborhood? Or the movie?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Should we try to arrange to retell your cinematic tale by way of Wayang puppets?

xpost

I like the Mission.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

the neighborhood.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Would you live there?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Like it how? Want to live there? Enjoy going out there?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I'd live there. The transpo is good. There's good food. Good weather.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

It's a mixed bag, but I definitely would live there. It's a great neighborhood to shop, eat and hang out in.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

What is bad about it?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Parking, crime, late-night noise.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Well there are definitely some parts of the Mission that are less than comfortable to walk through late at night. And if you are woman there are parts that can be downright uncomfortable all the time (I've heard some pretty unpleasant stories from ladies who've been followed for blocks, onto buses, etc, by groups of guys hooting and hollering and making obscene gestures.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Ugh

I am not sure which (SF) neighborhood I actually covet living in right now, should I move in a few months. I need to start thinking about this. Like the East Bay but sick of getting up at the crack of dawn because of Sarah's commute.

xp-okay, well we're not moving there

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Where does Sarah work?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Well you don't want to limit yourself to one neighborhood anyway. SF is one of those towns where it is good to have a general area of where you want to live and then have a bunch of specific areas within that area that you won't live (like Capp and 21st/23rd or between Division/15th and Mission/Valencia, for example) and then look at everywhere else in the general area until ya find something you like.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

And by general area, I mean like 75% of the city.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

Alex is right. Also, you have a car, I believe, so there are parts of town less desirable just because it'll be hell parking and moving it.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

i used to love the mission, but it is still suffering from whatever it is that neighborhoods like that suffer from.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Once they muscled out all the Irish, it lost it's ethnic flavor.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

She works in Belmont.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

How close to Bart are you now?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

We have a car. I love to drive and I love cars.

We are very close to BART, but she drives.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:06 (twenty years ago)

She should leave the car at the SFO/Burlingame parking lot at night and drive it to work in the am and back to the garage in the pm, getting to and from the garage by BART. (Not entirely serious about this)

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Adam get a map of SF from AAA (actually I'll GET a map from AAA haha) and next time we have a FAP everyone can highlight the parts of SF that you should and shouldn't look at.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

What about Cole Valley?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

That's a nice area. It can be kind of pricy though. It was high on our list of prospective neighborhoods though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

One of my best friends lives there. Very nice, pricey, but good neighborhood, easy train access to Downtown or 9th/Irving, close to Haight, Buena Vista and GG Parks.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to see 'The Conformist' Thursday at the Castro. Is anybody else going while it's there?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Was thinking about it, but so little time.

What about TEH WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I want to see this too. I think I mentioned here that my friend lives right above Mark Bittner's place on Telegraph Hill and we're supposed to see it together, but when?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

I've already seen The Conformist (at the Castro too, natch!) I'd see it again, but I doubt I will find the time.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

we are seeing OLD BOY this weekdn anyway.

Adam, didn't you think Coffee and Cigs was funny in a totally understated way? The Bill Murray skecth had myself, and the others at the press screening, in stitches.

Hey, different strokes and all that though.

Zarr, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Not funny, no. There is a fine line between understated and non-existent.

Panhandle?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

overall i didn't like coffee and cigs, but i really dug a few parts, especially the bill murray and gza and rza

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Bernal Heights?
Potrero?

xp-I liked the English part. The English part of most things is good.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Noe Valley
A quaint area where people know each other's names, babies rule the sidewalks and outdoor cafes draw summertime crowds.

babies

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

What has Potrero Hill got to do with OJ Simpson?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Deco...Ghetto??

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Panhandle is fine. Parts of Western Addition, Lower Haight, Duboce Triangle, all nice. Bernal Heights is a ways out and hard to get to/from. Potrero Hill is lovely. Potrero Hill is where OJ grew up.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

The Bill Murray skecth had myself, and the others at the press screening, in stitches.

Press screening? Why, you must be some sort of press person then. Perhaps even a film critic! I'd love to hear all about what that's like. I bet you have lots of good stories you're just dying to share with us! Oh, but maybe you are modest...

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

i love when michael said Noe Valley is like the marina for brunettes

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Did I say that? My girlfriend called upper Polk the Brunette Marina but it's sort of true of Noe too. It's a little too white and child-rearing for my taste, though one would never suspect that by looking at me.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

Deco Ghetto. funny. Alex, what neighborhood do you say you live in?

after reading that article, i think i spend a large amount of my time around there since i'm usually on foot and it's either my endpoint or in between my destinations (home, mission, upper market)

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

I say I live in Hayes Valley, JaXoN.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

No and I hate talking about myself anyway. Much prefer talking about other people... tee hee.

You can always ask me at the fest. I'll be drunk then. Perhaps.

Zarr, Tuesday, 8 March 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

If I ever move back to SF it will be for one reason, and I suspect babies would be involved eventually, so Noe Valley would definitely be on the shortlist...

I still haven't mustered the courage to really talk to Famke..

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

adam, I think my gf might be ordering this:

'Piccadilly'
The Chinese-American actress Anna May Wong was billed third in the British silent film "Piccadilly," playing an exotic dancer who seduces a nightclub owner (Jameson Thomas) away from her chief rival (Gilda Gray, the film's ostensible star). But Wong, who had gone to England to escape the ethnic stereotyping to which she had been subjected in Hollywood films, assumes complete command of "Piccadilly" from her first appearance. A figure of complex and ungovernable sexuality, both in "Piccadilly" and, it's said, in life, Wong presents herself as an unabashed erotic totem, performing almost naked before a room of society swells and violating plenty of Asian and American standards of behavior in the process.

Directed with avant-garde flourishes (like an amazing 360-degree pan around the vast nightclub set) by a German guest worker, E. A. Dupont ("Variety"), and written with melodramatic savvy by the novelist Arnold Bennett, "Piccadilly" was one of the last gasps of the silent cinema, a form effectively dead by the time it opened in London in 1929. This excellent release from Milestone Film and Video, transferred from a tinted restoration by the British Film Institute, includes the clumsy talking prologue tacked on in a hopeless attempt to bring the picture up to date. There's a wealth of background material about Wong, including scholarly articles and video clips from a conference on Wong held at the 2004 San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. $29.99. Not rated.

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

a 360-degree pan, eh?

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

i feel like we could be in SF current with those pix.

this looks just like john dwyer in ZEIGENBOCK KOPF
http://www.jneomarvin.com/scrapbook/pages/3D_PNG.htm

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

pan:
movement of camera from left to right or vice versa on a stationary tripod. On the screen, it produces a mobile framing which scans the space horizontally. Not to be confused with tracking shot.

Is there a better term?

Michael White (Hereward), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

i think he's saying it's not so avant garde?

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Tuesday, 8 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

I got lost somewhere south of Balboa Park (along San Bruno/Silver?) but I found my way out. That part of SF is well weird. I almost called one of the SF ILXors in my phone to ask for directions.

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

why do you get up when she has to leave? is this courtesy or something else?

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

adam, knowing you and your wife, areas of SF you would feel comfortable living in: cole valley, parts of Potrero (PARTS of it), inner sunset, cow hollow (no parking though), the castro/duboce triangle (no parking again)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

adam and his wife really like piedmont ave in oakland; with that as a guide, unfortunately, I would think that most parts of SF that they would really like are stupid expensive. except for the inner sunset! which is where I would live if I moved here.
I don't think we'll ever move to SF now, since we'll probably have a kid eventually and I hear nothing but grief and misery from parents here re: the SF school system these days and we can't afford private school, so I think we'll stay in berkeley.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Nice way to say we are fussy.

We are, though. We spend a lot of time at home!

why do you get up when she has to leave? is this courtesy or something else?

The marina has some pretty houses in it.

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

The Marina, among other factors, is too cold. It's foggy all summer long and there's often wind.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm married and I used to stay in bed until way after my wife left for work, until they started making me get here by 8:30!

the marina is beautiful. I'd live there if I were rich.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

you can just say "gygax!", i think people will know who you mean.

Actually, I thought about calling kyle too, but I knew it was his anniversary so I didn't, and Alex but he doesn't drive much (ever?).

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

if I won the lottery I'd buy a fucking mansion in seacliff and never fucking leave, I'd live in the topmost room, stare out at the ocean all day, drink 24 hours a day, and go mad.

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I play the lottery.

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

The marina has some pretty houses in it.

Built on fill! I'm glad we left.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

There's plenty of parking in the Duboce Triangle, you just need to know where to look.

hi mike!

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

If I had enough money, I still wouldn't live in Pacific or Laurel or Presidio Heights or Seacliff. My SF pied à terre would be on Telegraph or Russian Hill or at the top of the Castro near Twin Peaks.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

mike lurks everywhere, i have recently discovered.

the top of castro is pretty awesome, there are some gorgeous houses up there, I love to go up there at christmastime, they go crazy with the lights and decorations. I always get lost there as well.

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Do you go to STUD?

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

mel's is vile, and I say that admitting that I ate there all the time in college (at the berkeley one), but that was because there was a waitress who had chrissie-hynde-in-"brass in pocket"-video mascara. it did my stomach no favors.

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

I play pool

Senior Executive/CEO (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I am terrible at pool. Does anybody know of a bar, besides Finnegan's Wake, that has a ping pong table?

Michael White (Hereward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

i've also lived in Upper PaHa (panhandle). grove and schrader. and the outer, outer sunset (4th & quintara).

i do not go to the STUD but i live accross the street from it. the dude who cuts my hair performs at Trannie Shack.

there are TONS of super markets down there. all within walking distance. Trader Joes (9th & bryant), Safeway (16th & Portrero), Harvest (8th & Howard), Whole Foods (4th & Harrison) and the new Safeway (3rd & Brannan)

That's crazy. He's made some boring flicks, but he's made quite a few very good films (I first saw Adrian Brody and Lauren HILL!! in King of the Hill which was great.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

that's it.

Haven't seen King Of The Hill and probably never will.

just adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

The Limey is a really good movie, King of the Hill even more so. (I totally didn't realize that was Lauryn Hill until a couple years ago.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Sex, Lies, & Videotape, The Limey, Out Of Sight, SOLARIS...awful, awful, terrible, criminally bad films.

just adam (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:20 (twenty years ago)

Ohmigod TRAFFIC (except for Benicio Del Toro's performance) is the WORST THING he's done. Adam are you snorting crushed up Dimetap and watching movies again?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

I liked 'Out of Sight' well enough. 'Oceans Eleven' was lots of fun as those kind of movies go and I didn't hate 'Traffic'. 'Solaris' I will not see and I think that if not challeneged, SS tends toward boring and predictable.

Michael White (Hereward), Monday, 14 March 2005 22:46 (twenty years ago)

Ocean's Eleven was quite entertaining and it was set in Vegas and it was mercifully short.

Elliott Gould had a masterful performance as a Jewish man.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

it's by the fondue

whatever (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

I pay no attention to anything in there now except for blue note music.

the fondu is great but destroys, DESTROYS my stomach.

Ginger Snaps is a great movie!

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

it is much better than, say, Millions!

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

yeah i tried to get it for halloween but it was out

whatever (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I've seen In A Lonely Place, I just want to see it again.

whatever (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

the redhead is sexy!

my former coworker did the titles for that dvd, or so he claimed, ages before it ever came out. I don't think they wound up using the stuff he did.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

and midsummer night's sex comedy

xp

whatever (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:27 (twenty years ago)

(ginger snaps, that is, not in a lonely place. there may be a sexy redhead in that for all i know, I can't remember it very well).

"The U.K.'s grime scene, with its gritty streets and sparse, rat-a-tat soundtrack, has become a permanent fixture on the hip hop family tree. M.I.A. is the latest outgrowth."

Woah shit, wait until Woebot sees this haha.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Also I need to rate The Misfits!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

would I like six-string samurai?

whatever (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Possibly. It's very Repo Man-esque.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

You mean...shit?

whatever (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

who's asking? (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

gygax why is the Guardian playing scrabble with you?

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 28 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

aaaah, it's gygax.

who's asking? (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

"playing scrabble"

who's asking? (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

"hardscrabble"?

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

it's not gygax, it's some swanky Italian and his sex dwarf.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 28 March 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

it's gygax alright. pimping the fashion industry like the broke-ass ho that it is.

who's asking? (nordicskilla), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

But does it taste like real gygax?

xpost

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

sex dwarves = the fashion industry.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

but seriously, I want to know why the Guardian namedropped gygax Scrabble last week. I DEMAND DIRT! (or at least some Star Jones backfat)

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 28 March 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Well, the [CONTROVERSIAL MODERATOR EDIT] breached the scandal [CONTROVERSIAL MODERATOR EDIT] until the air was pungent with roasted goats and cumin. Mr. Redmond [CONTROVERSIAL MODERATOR EDIT] tied to the board with biore facial strips and [CONTROVERSIAL MODERATOR EDIT] the impressions that the tiles leave on your backside! I was appalled until I read what it said.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

man.... you people.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 28 March 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

my parents are finally here next week.

where should I take them?

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

How is Cliff House? I know Kyle said...something.

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Also can we talk about the SF Film Festival yet? That other thread reminded me.

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Which one?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

not the Calum one. The official SF one.

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Cliff House.

Go during the day. The restaurant is OK but pricey. The bistro/cafe thing is cool, though. If there's a red headed bartender, his name is Tim. Tell him I said hi. He won't have any idea what you're talking about.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

more parent-friendly activities please.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

The SFBG played scrabble with Gygax! and they found it to be an enjoyable time, what more info do you need, Shakey?

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 1 April 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

It looks like a pretty solid lineup. They've got new stuff from Miike, Herzog and Solondz, so those films will probably deliver as expected but won't be too surprising.

bro jackson (he knows) (deangulberry), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I don't like any of those three directors these days.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

You kind of weird me out when you post something sincere!

xp

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

My gf was thinking of getting a membership just so we could go see the Dying Gaul and these three, Campbell Scott, Patricia Clarkson and Peter Sarsgaard. She has crushes on the boys and so wouldn't notice me flirting with Ms. Clarkson but, alas, we will be in NYC.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Adam, you weird me out all the time, so it's all good.

I caught Ichi years ago at a midnight SFIFF screening where they gave us free Guinness (!!!) and it was great. I think it was the US premiere, but I might be wrong on that. I also saw the US premiere of Spirited Away at the Castro and John Lasseter (sp?) showed up with Miyazaki for a brief chat.

If any of the screenings, have extra activities attached to them, it'd probably be pretty worthwhile to attend. SFIFF seems like they're on top of delivering more of an experience beyond just seeing the films.

bro jackson (he knows) (deangulberry), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

I am thinking of renewing my PFA membership for this.

Airtube (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:09 (twenty years ago)

JUST SEEN this lunchtime in SF - guy walking down an alley TALKING ON HIS CELLPHONE while using his other hand to URINATE AT AN ALMOST HORIZONTAL ANGLE WITH HIS PENIS. While wakling! At a fairly quick pace!

Airtube (nordicskilla), Saturday, 2 April 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

I'll be in town mid-June. Futureheads @ Fillmore, 6/18 -- how likely to sell out? (I may just wait to see what's at Bottom of the Hill, as I've never been there.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 4 April 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

Pretty happy with our second year personally. We gave the fans a great time - that is what counts.

Zarr, Wednesday, 6 April 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I'm a non-driver ... can I get some kinda ferry and/or bus to one of the Marin beaches come June? Muir Beach was recommended to me, if I feel like wading or sunning, um, bareass.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:16 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

I can't find out how on 511.org though, Dr. Morbius. You'll want to avoid those beaches on the weekend if it's nice enough to go to them - the traffic is calamitous. I don't know how well acquainted you are with the coast here in the summer but it's likely to be foggy a lot in June and the water is cold.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

The thought in swimming off of Marin, or in fact anywhere North of San Luis Obispo, is terrifying!

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

sharks will rip flesh from your bones like soft tender fried chicken

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

How would you know, VEGAN?

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Even vegans have watched enough KFC commercials to know what happen to tender fried chicken. (NOTE: Chicken in KFC ads may not represent actual chicken KFC customers receive nor is it any guarantee that what is received is chicken of any sort.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

May cause heart pain, back pain, asthma attacks, psoriasis, cancer of the face....

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh we are back to swimming in the Bay Area.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

Muir Beach is really purty tho (I was married at the overlook just above it). dunno about *swimming* in it, but I've seen people do it... sunbathing, yeah sure no problem if the weather is nice (which is not entirely likely). if the weather sucks you can walk up the road half a mile til you get to the Pelican Inn where you can get drunk and flounce about like an Englishman.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 April 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

what?

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

I can't even swim! Just going for the purtiness maybe, but I'm more likely to settle for Amoeba, the A's, SoMA drinking, Bottom of the Hill, MoMA and the Alcatraz tour.

Have they moved Laughing Sal and her friends back to the Cliff House?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Not yet I don't think. I believe it is still out on one of the piers. Can anyone confirm?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Moma is great. The A's? Who is Laughing Sal?

Aaron Cometbus swims in the Bay. Apparently it's warm "because of El Nino".

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Muir Woods/Beach/Overlook are all fuckin beeeeeyyooootiful. I recommend hiking up to the top of Mt Tamalpais.

Morbs, seriously look me up if you wanna catch an A's game. I can get you in to the MOMA too. When are you coming out exactly?

Lauging Sal is still in Fman'sW.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

Laughing Sal was part of the Mechanical Museum which used to be located out by the Cliff House, but had to move a couple of years back when the Cliff House was reconstructed/refurbished.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

I'd be into going to an A's game too btw.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

what's at MOMA right now? I'm due for a visit.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm not a vegan

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

I was at Cliff House last week. I saw no laughing people or things.

gygax, get me into sfmoma! Even better, get me a job there (on the admin side, I mean)!

xp I want to see the A's

MOMA has Robert Bechtle (brilliant photorealistic middle-californian suburban vistas) and the Jeremy Blake Winchester installation (super 8 video painting on film socio-historical weirdness) and other things!

I absolutely will, 'gax, but I already have tix for A's-Mets for a local friend and myself -- unless you can go to a Thursday 12:30 matinee? I'm there June 15-20.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

ah - Winchester, right. that was the exhibit I wanted to see...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Go to the Winchester Mystery House instead!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

It's about the history of Sarah Winchester and the Winchester Mystery House, among other things.

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

It can't be as cool as actually going to the Mystery House though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

The Mystery House is not very cool!

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Haha okay that's just crazy talk. I should've expect it from someone who likes Heat though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

The Mystery House is not very cool!

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Sorry I'm Mr. Advanced Tix when it comes to baseball ... maybe we should organize an ILX hike up Mount Tam per Shakey.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

You don't need advance tickets for a day A's game. They never sell out.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I figured, but there'll be an influx of us obnoxious Gothamites for the Mets' series, and I wanted good seats for Wed night.

Also, Alex is sposed to hook me up with some flaxseed oil.

My friend Ben is coming to visit next month! He is formerly Time Out London Dating Section's third most eligible bachelor!

Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Friday, 15 April 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I do hope that he puts that on his resume.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 15 April 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

You bring resumes on dates, Michael?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 15 April 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

And references...

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 15 April 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

Haha do you give them little "How Did I Do" performance evaluation cards afterwards?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 15 April 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

I keep a stack of those under the pillow.

Considering that I haven't been on a date in over twenty years, that's kind of weird isn't it?

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 15 April 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

It's good to keep prepared, anyway, I guess.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 15 April 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but if my girlfriend ever finds them I might end up in trouble or worse, she might give me a poor review.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 15 April 2005 22:47 (twenty years ago)

EVERYBODY who lives in or near the Bay Area or is even just visiting MUST go to TJ's Gingerbread House!!!:

ALex and I finally went there on Saturday and it...defies mere description!

Samuel Glickstein (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

It's pretty crazy. It's also a lot more price-y and dressy than the photos indicate so don't don't wear a t-shirt and a hoody and prepare to bring a lot of money.

That is the worst double feature ever.

Nah, a worse double feature would lack Jason Patric's cheekbones, 30 feet long on the screen.

I'd love to go to the Castro again, but the rest of that week is the SF Gay Film Fest, and nearly all films at those things suck. (Maybe the Brazilian S&M one on Sat nite will be cruisy.)

Well, I found the Muir bus:

http://www.inetours.com/Tours/Muir_Woods_Loop.html

Any opinions on how to split the time between beach/woods? (I do burn easily when naked.) or Sausalito?

'gax, you have 8 days to answer my email.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 6 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Dr. M, this is going to depend heavily on whether the summer fog is in or not. On most days, even the nicest weather at Muir Beach is a bit Nor Cal brisk, but the nude part of the beach is relatively protected (and mostly straight). Muir Woods, sun or fog, is amazing and well worth a couple of hours of hiking but you'll run into a lot of tourists. Sausalito, (where I lived through High School) is very touristy downtown but might be worth a stop on your way back. It's also conveniently accessible by ferry if you feel like staying later or coming back another day. Either way, try to avoid going on a weekend if possible.

M. White (Miguelito), Monday, 6 June 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't gonna go to the nude beach for pickups! (I've seen the urban beaches for that.)

What's with the relatively lame shows in SF next week? Looks like I'm stuck with Enon on the 19th. And the screening of Corman's "Bloody Mama" (w/ Shelley Winters & De Niro) in Berkeley on the 18th is tempting me.

Yes, that's what you bid on -- the right to wipe em off! (I didn't budget for that.)

I was pretty much standing up-sleeping-drunk at Bottom of the Hill Sunday, so I sobered up by walking back to SoMa; a barren nocturnal trek it was.

Cuz I spent an hour clambering down and back from Fort Point, I missed John Doe at Stern Grove and only stayed for about 5 Lucinda W songs.

Not that cold! The staff was annoying, contradicting each other on where you could / couldn't stand. And on the hillside, some friggin' hippie was perched in a HAMMOCK between two trees; that sightline's OK to block, apparently.

The Muir Woods bus stopped in Sausalito for 45 minutes, and DAMN that place called Hamburgers makes a juicy one.

Hahahaa, I heard about this.

Looks like Katamari Damacy.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I see my office building. It's green.

Cute.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

I heard about this but didn't have a link. Thanks Dr. M.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Even in Jell-O my building looks like a giant up-ended turd.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Did I ever tell you guys how much I LOVE jello?

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

this link spread fast. my coworker saw this at open studio last weekend.

This thread takes all day to load, wasn't there a follow up?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

There was some SF recommendations thread.

Is Day Of The Dead stuff in The Mission fun and/or worth going to? Or does everybody think it is lame?

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think I just like saying "Ayyy! dia de los muertos!" like that bumblebee guy from The Simpsons.

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

But with that Edgeware touch.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

EDGWARE.

Stop adding that extra E.

Dio De Los Muertos is pretty cool. Altho last year it was sorta distracting and depressing since it coincided with election night...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

the dia de los muertos parade is wonderful. I go every year. It might rain, though.

mikef (mfleming), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

i saw fake alex in sf at safeway again last night. tall, short blond hair, glasses, designer jeans, jean jacket, trainers. we argued about music for a second while waiting in line.

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

???

fake alex in sf? Does he have a doppelganger? Someone we could frame?

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Alex wouldn't wear designer jeans!

F.R.I.E.N.D. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:29 (nineteen years ago)

I do have a jean jacket though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

A friend is in the sketch group Prank the Dean, but I think Oh, You and Your Bone Spurs is a cuter name.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

There's a guy I work with who is in Prank The Dean! I wonder if it is the same guy....

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

Jesse?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

haha. yes.

I don't know him personally, but he sent out a company email promoting the group...

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha, he's a nice kid and a Giants fan (well, nobody's perfekt).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

all of this 100% guaranteed to NOT BE FUNNY

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

Don't be talking shit about the Giants on the SF thread, Dr. M.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

C'mon kyle, no more than 90%! Rob Corddry!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Talking shit about the Giants is perfectly acceptable as far as I am concerned. Anyway the whole thread is about TALKING SMACK.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

I love SF, but I couldn't care less about pro-sports regionalism.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

A classic Shakey Mo Collier post.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

What I should have said was talk all the shitr you want about the Giants but not about their fans.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

the only pro sports discussions I can tolerate all center around debating which one is the most overtly homoerotic.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

I was jest improvvin'!

Also, Prank-the-Deanster Jesse Thorn has an acclaimed show on the UC Santa Cruz station, which I've almost never heard (cept the time he had Andrew WK give his 9-yo brother advice):

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

ahhh KZSC. worst block programming ever. Great vinyl collection tho.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

i went to the Tinkle show on saturday night - hosted by david cross, todd barry, jon benjamin plus special guests brian posehn, bob odenkirk, eugene mirman & paul f. tompkins. it was great - a 3 hour show for 20 bucks!

something less threatening (heywood), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

did they make you stand? I've never understood comedy shows where they did that. I don't dance to jokes, asshole.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 20:42 (nineteen years ago)

Who are you talking to?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:26 (nineteen years ago)

I don't dance to jokes, asshole

Gimme the right drugs and I do. It's quite embarrassing, actually.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

You can dance to Sarah Silverman jokes, because some of them are songs.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

Have you seen 'Jesus is Magic'? I keep meaning to but, well, you know how it goes.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:31 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I saw it. Really stoned, actually. It was half funny.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

I figured it would be really funny in parts and not in others. That's my general take on her. She has a kind of devil-may-care, machine-gun approach to her jokes where some are funny, some are excruciating and some are meh.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

I'd never heard of her before I saw the movie!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

I first saw her on Fox's 'Greg the Bunny' where she was funny enough but as a character, not as herself. Funny enough in 'The Aristocrats' to possibly get herself sued.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

I like the Aristocrats joke (minus the senseless references to Down's Syndrome--is it just me or are "retard" jokes really hot right now? So tiresome.) but I don't generally find her that funny.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

The discomfort level is great, though. "I was raped by a doctor as a little girl, ...which is bitersweet for a Jewish girl." Are rape jokes funny? Can a goy laugh at Jewish jokes? She's a little shit. She knows it, and she revels in it. I somehow find her provocations amusing.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Can a goy laugh at Jewish jokes?

He can certainly try.

The funniest guy in The Aristocrats was the weird guy who said he was in Friends.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:54 (nineteen years ago)

I don't remember him.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

Have I told you how, when I first met my gf's family, I volunteered my favorite Jewish joke to them? (Incidentally, a joke told to me by Roman Polanski.) They looked horrified until I told it, then bewildered.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

he was the best!

xp
tell us the joke

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

taylor negron

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

Michael, that wouldn't be the "Don't make trouble" joke, would it?

Have they finished renovating the Cliff House?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

Have you heard about the six Jews who changed the world?

First there was Moses. He said everything comes from there. *points to heavens*

Then there was Solomon. He said everything comes from here. *points to head*

Then there was Jesus. He said everything comes from here. *points to heart*

Then there was Marx. H said everything comes from here.*points to stomach*

Then there was Freud. He said everything comes from here. *points to groin*

Then there was Einstein. He said, "Gentlemen. It's all relative."

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

They have, Dr. M. I've been to both the bistro and the fancy restaurant (whose name escapes me).

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

FAB (on both counts). and the Musee Mechanique is back?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

The MM is at Pier 29 now, I think.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

yes the restaurant now takes up the spot where the musee was.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

"Who are you talking to?"

sorry, I was referring to the time I saw David Cross and the crowd had to stand through his entire set.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

taylor negron

Wasn't he the one who made the strange joke about (random date) being so terrible. When he lost his wallet and credit cards at a motel or soemthing?

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

taylor negron

yes

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:17 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't he the one who made the strange joke about (random date) being so terrible.

This was the hardest I laughed in the whole movie! Do you think I'm strange too?

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

He was funny but kinda scary in a 'Sorry, my lovely daughter, but no way in hell am I letting you go out with Mr. Negron.'

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

oh

adamrl (nordicskilla), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

mr negron would not want to date your daughter

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 19 January 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

Well then, all's well.
