This morning I was on my way to work on the bus. At a bus stop just approaching camden, a bunch of policemen with bright yellow fluorescent were waiting for us as the bus pulled over.

I was thinking that there may have been a murderer on the bus, or something - the last time I saw more than 5 policemen in one place was when there was a biker who got knocked down in the middle of the road - but instead, two ticket inspectors went on the bus to check that everyone had a ticket on them.. and that was all!

I did a quick count as they finally finished checking everyone and left the bus. There were 14 yellow jackets there! About 7 had a police hat on.

WTF? A little over the top perhaps?? I wonder if they had 7 police looking for my car when it went missing.

They had three men waiting at the exit door to check everyone as they get off the bus. I considered the idea of legging it past them and then when they catch me and wrestle me to the ground, I'd show them my valid travelcard, and then sue them for any damages done to my clothes.

I didn't do it in the end for that exact reason. But I did do the pretend 'oh i lost my bus pass' fumbling around for half a minute, just to waste some of their time in revenge of them wasting mine. Sweet sweet revenge, indeed.

There was one period when I was getting on the bus with an out of date ticket so often, I just kept a £10 note in my wallet so that had a ticket inspector showed up on the bus I could just calmly take out my carefully folded £10 note and say "I'd like to pay the fine please."

This shit has been happening on Melbourne PT for some years now, thanks to them getting rid of conductors and replacing them with at-station and on-tram ticket machines. People just werent paying, so they've had to bring in inspectors, who do have power of arrest or something I think, and have gotten into hot water over accusations of harrasment and strongarm tactics and the like in recent times.

The amount of them Ive seen around at times, makes me wonder why they dont just bring back a damn conductor on each tram, and a bluddy attendant at all stations, people have to pay, more jobs created! Insane.

In Sheffield, when the tram lines opened in the mid-90s, there were European-style ticket-and-validation machines at each stop. They didn't last long; within a year or so, the tram company had ripped them all out and switched to having conductors on each tram to sell all the tickets.

(partly, there were problems with British people not understanding the continental system where you buy a carnet from your local shop and get each ticket validated when you want to use it)

hopefulyl there will be a swing back to conductors over different types of Pt. i know routemasters mean the end of in in buses, but nottinghams swish new tram people decided to use conductors in stead of machines cos it would work out cheaper when run thru the Cost benefit Analysis Lie-Machine, and having seen Shef Supertam swtich to human ticket interaction.

also the amount of people you can get on a Bendy Bus means having at least two staff per bus is a very good idea not just fot collecting fares but also for 'keeping the peace' and re-assuring passengers generally.

i've not really noticed any problems with them, it just depends on the route. the 'easy to fare-dodge unless inspectors get on' is the only real howler - tho perhaps there are some London streets too narrow for it - the 73 and 12 spring to mind as being problematic at some point route-wise. any others?

i'd have thought you'd struggle to get on the 73 at the first attempt - must be absolutely heaving at that time, tho i suppose they run so many that it evens out well enough. 25s ALWAYS ALWAYS have people's faces pushed up against the doors.

major problems for me is that they take up so much road space and cause often srerious delay, far more than a normal double decker. this doesnt really fit in with the idea of trying to ease congestion, like when a bendy bus is trying to get round the corner at kings cross and blocking about 3lanes of traffic.

i should check the tfl site to see if bendy buses even run near kings cross, but i cant be bothered. i seem to remember this happening to me sometimes when i lived in london.

I hate bendy buses. Every time I'm on one something happens like: people ring bell and bus stops. Doors open and a few people squeeze out before a crowd pushes in, pinning elderly ladies with their shopping or people with small children or luggage onto their seats in the very back, where it's hard to move once you're back there. The people cramming on can't see that other people are trying to get off, and the doors quickly close. Repeated rings of the bell (and shouting from the back of the bus) fail to alert the distant driver that something's wrong.

And what jel said. They smell worse than any other London public transport. (Except possibly the north london line.)

i suppose they theoried that because they were bigger there would be less of them running so less traffic in the long run...more cost-effective short term/long term i'm not sure

i'm not sure why i'm defending them! but i've experienced more problems on double-deckers than on bendies re driver closing doors too early or forgetting to open them at all. partly because i rarely need to get on a bendy tho perhaps.

re the 73 and KX, im thinking of the weird buit whre going westbound you get forced roudn a sort of corner where mole jazz used to be, where caledonian road comes in. does the 73 come in there? i cant think where it goes southbound. think it just comes down pentonville rd.

bendy bus is just a double decker with the top cut off and stuck on the end + more capacity

i think we need a massive one wasy systems (see eixample in barcelona) and buses that are two lanes wide, rather than long. they can just go up one street, then turn round on a huge turning wheel like trains, (turn hyde park into one), then go back the other way.

They hardly ever check tickets on Brighton buses but then it's pretty hard to get on without one. Unless you do the thing where you get on and then pass your saver ticket out of the back window to your mate in the queue, a potentially infinite scam as long as the queue is also infinite.

I do not care for a website full of bored nerds with nothing to do all day but I felt the need to react to this one after reading a letter in a newspaper which had this address at the bottom.

If you do not like bendy buses, fine. DO NOT spread your hatred via the internet. What next, ihateblackpeople.org. ihatejewishpeople.org.

Finally, get over the Routemaster. It was a fabulous machine but can you really have a bus nearly 50 years old travelling around a capital city of the world. You only have to look at the dislike towards the slam door trains (nearly equal age) to see that the Routemaster is a bandwagon that sad people with empty lives feel the need to jump on.
